New Minnesota law makes it easier to expunge criminal records

The third time a company offered her a job, then rescinded it, Katie Tourand lost all hope.

Although she had served time for two felonies almost a decade ago, Tourand had spent the intervening years cleaning up her act.

She recovered from addiction, had children and got a business degree. But on the last step to turning her life around — embarking on a career in marketing — she kept hitting a roadblock.

Although they were wooed by her résumé and skills, potential employers would balk once they did a criminal-background check.

“I felt like I got punched in the stomach,” said Tourand, now 29.

Want to get the expungement process started?

Here are some resources:

The MN Courts Self-Help Center offers information on starting the criminal expungement process, including a step-by-step tutorial at http://www.mncourts.gov/selfhelp/?page=276

Ramsey County Courts offers a criminal expungement clinic on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, 1 p.m. at the Ramsey County Law Library, 18th floor, Ramsey County Courthouse, 15 W Kellogg Blvd, St. Paul.

The Council on Crime and Justice has frequently asked questions about expungement, including a list of assistance and filing options, at http://www.tinyurl.com/recordshelp.

First Tuesdays from the Council on Crime and Justice and the Volunteer Lawyers Network provide free informational seminars on the first Tuesday of every month. The 50-minute overview of the expungement process is followed by one-on-one interviews that determine if a volunteer lawyer can help you with your case. Information is also available about how to represent yourself or find a lawyer.

The next First Tuesdays seminar is on Feb. 3, 2 to 5 p.m. at the Urban League, 2100 Plymouth Ave. N. Minneapolis. Attendees must bring their criminal record. More information: http://www.crimeandjustice.org/pdfFiles/Expungement%20Seminars%20at%20the%20Minneapolis%20Urban%20League.pdf

Second Chance Saturdays from the Council on Crime and Justice and the University of Minnesota Law School is a free workshop on the third Saturday of each month that helps people obtain and understand their Minnesota criminal record.

The next Second Chance Saturdays workshop is on Saturday, Feb. 21, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center, 2001 Plymouth Ave. N. Minneapolis. More information: http://crimeandjustice.org/pdffiles/SCS_Flyer_updated%2010-8-2014.pdf

Like Tourand, hundreds of thousands of Minnesota ex-offenders — adults with convictions who have completed the terms of their sentences, whether they be probation, parole or prison — face similar barricades to employment. In Minnesota, employers are allowed to make blanket prohibitions on hiring people with criminal records.

Now, some ex-offenders have the option of a second chance.

A new law that went into effect Jan. 1 makes it easier for Minnesotans convicted of low-level felonies — as well as misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors and juvenile delinquency — to seal their records from the background checks routinely run by employers and landlords.

“It’s good for everyone,” said Gary Schiff, president of the Council on Crime and Justice, one of the leading advocacy organizations that lobbied for the change. “If someone has a job, if someone has housing, they are less likely to re-offend and end up back behind bars.”

Under the new law, some former offenders can apply to have their records sealed two to five years after completing their sentences. Victims have the opportunity to weigh in during the process, and expungement is not guaranteed.

This law is only the latest in a wave of reforms in criminal justice sweeping Minnesota and the rest of the country. State-by-state, there has been a push to help people who have low-level, nonviolent criminal records move on from their pasts.

“We see ourselves as part of a national movement,” said Sarah Walker, founder of the Second Chance Coalition, a local criminal justice reform group.

In Minnesota, advocates won in 2013 the “ban the box” legislation that deters employers from looking into criminal backgrounds until after an interview with the applicant. And in the upcoming legislative session, they will work to pass a law making it easier for former felons to get their voting rights restored.

All told, this is a trifecta of bipartisan efforts to provide better opportunities for ex-offenders to re-enter society.

“If we want to create pathways out of poverty and into prosperity, then we have to develop the infrastructure to allow individuals to be judged on their skills and qualifications, and not just on their past,” said Sen. Bobby Joe Champion, DFL-Minneapolis, chief author of all three bills.

From Subway to school

Tourand’s troubles began in high school when she started doing drugs. She dropped out of school, moved out of her home in Burnsville and got her first charge, second-degree possession, at age 18. She served four months in jail, and when she got out, went right back to using drugs.

At 20, she had a second felony charge, for aiding and abetting a check forgery.

Everything changed when she found out, shortly after her second arrest, that she was pregnant.

“That was the catalyst, the motivator, the inspiration,” said the well-spoken and candid Tourand. “It was everything I needed to stop.”

Tourand returned to her family, had a son, Jack, whom she gave up for adoption, and took “baby steps” to get back on track. She made sandwiches at Subway for years, until she decided to go back to school.

That was the first time she experienced how different life could be for felons. At Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Tourand volunteered with get-out-the-vote initiatives. But she couldn’t legally cast a ballot.

Tourand later transferred to the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to study marketing.

She was able to work part-time during school and didn’t have any issues getting those jobs. So when Carlson hosted a job fair for seniors, she took advantage of it.

“I was all excited about what my future was going to hold, until I realized these are all major corporations and they are all requiring a background check,” she said.

She said she received signed offer letters from Wells Fargo and MetLife; both were rescinded. Another employer told her over the phone that she would have been hired if not for the record. (Neither Wells Fargo nor MetLife could discuss the particulars of Tourand’s case, but spokespeople for both companies said that they are required to comply with federal screening standards.)

Having the offers revoked was devastating for Tourand. “I had my head down working so hard for so long and to have this happen, it hit me — I realized, this is going to be my future,” she said. “I felt really hopeless.”

So she decided to do something about it.

Tourand got involved with criminal justice advocates who were waging a campaign to change the expungement law. She told elected leaders her story, on the record.

“I spoke at the final committee meeting before the vote on it, and it was very liberating,” she said. “I was like, ‘What do I have to lose? I can’t get a job anyway.’ “

Things began to turn around almost immediately. At the bill-signing ceremony, Gov. Mark Dayton came up to her and offered her a part-time job.

Turns out, there was something to Tourand’s catharsis. Christopher Uggen, a criminologist at the University of Minnesota and a leading researcher on expungement, found in a study he conducted that just the idea of expungement helped ex-offenders get jobs.

“Almost immediately it has a positive value,” Uggen said. “Expungement helps present a more balanced vision of a job seeker than just one record on paper, and at the same time, it also provides some hope for people who are stigmatized.”

Last fall, Tourand finally got her dream job, working full-time in digital marketing for a local firm. Her bosses didn’t think her record was relevant. When her new colleagues look her up online and find links to articles about the expungement law, they “go out of their way to tell me how proud they are of me,” Tourand said.

She’s still living with her father in the Burnsville house where she grew up, because her criminal history prevents her from easily renting an apartment. There, she raises her 3-year-old son, Charlie. She still sees Jack, too.

She is finally beginning to work toward getting her record sealed.

She hopes her journey can inspire others in her position to take control of their pasts.

“Before this, you had to sit in the shadows and wait for someone who was willing to take a chance on you. But now, we’re actually able to come out of hiding,” she said.

“I understand what I did in the past was wrong, but I’m not as ashamed. I own it.”

Nurse practitioner

Scope of practice for nurse practitioners

Nurse practitioners have advanced education, clinical training and the demonstrated competence and legal authority to practise beyond the level of a registered nurse. Nurse practitioners work autonomously and in collaborative teams with other health professionals to promote health, prevent disease, and improve access and population health outcomes for a specific patient group or community. Nurse practitioners manage episodes of care as the lead healthcare provider in partnership with health consumers and their families/whānau. Nurse practitioners combine advanced nursing knowledge and skills with diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic knowledge to provide patient-centred healthcare services including the diagnosis and management of health consumers with common and complex health conditions. They provide a wide range of assessment and treatment interventions, ordering and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests, prescribing medicines within their area of competence and admitting and discharging from hospital and other healthcare services/settings. As clinical leaders they work across healthcare settings and influence health service delivery and the wider profession.

This scope of practice, with its definition of what of nurse practitioners can do, was effective from 6 April 2017. It was the first major change to the scope since the nurse practitioner role was established in 2001 and followed a comprehensive review, including two rounds of consultation. Its aim is to ensure the scope provides sufficient flexibility to enable nurse practitioners to safely and appropriately meet changing health needs, with demand for care is growing from aging, diverse, remote and underserved population groups and more people are living with chronic conditions.

In pursuit of flexibility, newly registered nurse practitioners will no longer be restricted to a specific area of practice. As advanced clinicians, they are trusted to practise within their areas of competence and experience.

What does this mean for nurses applying for registration as nurse practitioners?

An 18-month transition period has been established. Until September 2018, registered nurses undertaking nurse practitioner programmes can register with a condition to practise in a specific area of practice. Refer to the

What does this mean for existing nurse practitioners?

Existing nurse practitioners are not directly affected by these changes and will continue to practice with a condition placed in their scope of practice indicating the limits of their practice – for example, that they work in a particular area or do not prescribe.

Those who wish to expand their practice and have a condition/s removed, may apply to the Council for a change of condition. Details on how to do this are contained in the

Nurse Practitioner Prescribing

Nurse practitioners are authorised prescribers (along with doctors, optometrists and midwives) under the Medicines Act .

The Misuse of Drugs Regulations 1977 permits nurse practitioners to prescribe controlled drugs within their scope of practice for:

  • Not exceeding one month’s supply for Class A and B controlled drugs
  • Not exceeding three months’ supply for Class C controlled drugs.

Guidelines for nurses wishing to apply for registration in the nurse practitioner scope of practice are available from the resource documents box in the right hand corner of this page.

Standing Orders

The Medicines (Standing Order) Amendment Regulations 2016. extended the definition of who are permitted to issue standing orders to include optometrists and nurse practitioners. This means from 17 August 2016, nurse practitioners can issue standing orders and must comply with the regulatory requirements for monitoring and audit of the standing orders they issue ( Standing Order Guidelines 2016, Ministry of Health ).

Nurse practitioners having the ability to issue standing orders will improve access to medicines and effective treatment and allows nurse practitioners to work to the full extent of their scope.

More information on Nurse Practitioner qualifications and competencies can be found on here

Continuing competence requirements

Continuing competence requirements

Every 3 years prescribing nurse practitioners will be required to provide evidence that they have maintained competence, when they apply for their practising certificate. This evidence includes:

  • Ongoing peer review of their prescribing practice by an authorised prescriber; and
  • A minimum of 40 hours per year of professional development over a 3 year period; and
  • A minimum of 40 days per year of ongoing nursing practice over a 3 year period.

How to Factor Numbers: Factorization

This factors calculator factors numbers by trial division. Follow these steps to use trial division to find the factors of a number.

  1. Find the square root of the integer number n and round up to the next whole number. Let’s call this number s .
  2. Start with the number 1 and find the corresponding factor pair: n 1 = n. So 1 and n are a factor pair because division results in a whole number with zero remainder.
  3. Do the same with the number 2 and proceed testing all integers (n 2, n 3, n 4. n s ) up through the square root rounded to s. Record the factor pairs where division results in whole integer numbers with zero remainders.
  4. When you reach n s and you have recorded all factor pairs you have successfully factored the number n .

Example Factorization Using Trial Division

  • The square root of 18 is 4.2426, rounded up to the next whole number is 5
  • Testing the integer values 1 through 5 for division into 18 we get these factor pairs: (1 and 18), (2 and 9), (3 and 6). The factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18.

Factors of Negative Numbers

All of the above information and methods apply to factoring negative numbers. Just be sure to follow the rules of multiplying and dividing negative numbers to find all factors of negative numbers. For example, the factors of -6 are (1, -6), (-1, 6), (2, -3), (-2, 3). See the Math Equation Solver Calculator and the section on Rules for Multiplication Operations .

What is WHM (Web Host Manager)? Support Portal #manage #hosting

What is WHM (Web Host Manager)?

Web Host Manager, or WHM, is a powerful program that allows administrative access to the back end of cPanel. There are two versions that Host Gator uses. Reseller accounts get basic WHM. Dedicated Servers and VPS accounts get root WHM (also called rWHM), which has features that require root access to the server enabled. Resellers can not have rWHM.

Why would I want WHM?

WHM gives you a lot more control and flexibility when managing either a few very popular and resource intensive sites, or large number of sites. On top of giving you the ability to sell hosting services to other people, WHM also gives you the option to create and manage multiple cPanels. There are lots of really good reasons, if you have business oriented or popular sites, to place them on separate cPanels. Here are a few of the more common reasons we see:

  • If one of your sites is hacked or attacked, the odds that the hacker can get into your other sites is dramatically reduced, which increases your security.
  • There is no way for someone to tell if accounts on different cPanels are attached to the same WHM account, which increases your privacy.
  • If you have multiple sites that need to take credit cards, using WHM saves you a lot of time, stress, and money. To be able to process credit cards you need an SSL certificate. To have an SSL certificate you must have a dedicated IP address, and you can only have one dedicated IP address per cPanel. If you are running multiple websites that need to be able to take credit cards, a Reseller account is much easier (and either less expensive or equal in cost – the break even point is two websites) to use to manage multiple cPanels than have to manage multiple accounts.
  • You have the ability to monitor and adjust your bandwidth and disk space, which can be key to keeping a quickly growing or popular site from being suspended or going down due to bandwidth overages. Since you can adjust your bandwidth and only upgrade when you really need it, this can dramatically reduce your costs.
  • Managing a large number of domains in one cPanel can be frustrating, especially if you update the files regularly. While we allow unlimited domains on a shared cPanel account, that does not mean it is always pleasant to work on that many domains in one cPanel.
  • You need to have several web sites that take credit cards, and each one needs it’s own cPanel for it’s own dedicated IP address.

What WHM Does:

WHM gives you a suite of tools to easily do the following things:

  • Create, delete, and suspend your cPanel accounts.
  • Manage and monitor your sites (password resets).
  • Access to check and change all of your domains’ DNS zones.
  • The ability to configure your own customers’ support requests through cPanel.
  • Permission to check the server information and status.
  • Ability to create your own default page when you create a new account.
  • Access to customize your hosting and control panel with extensive branding.
  • Ability to change your client domain names and user names.
  • Hop between every cPanel on your account and access/change anything that does not require SQL access.

Root WHM users get more tools, as well.

Part-Time RN Program Information

Essential Information

Part-time nursing programs are typically offered by community colleges. Program length can range between 2.5 and 4 years, and many of the classes are offered at night or on the weekends. The first year of enrollment usually focuses on the completion of general education courses. Once these courses are finished, students can begin classes in nursing. The program also includes clinical training.

Applicants must hold a high school diploma or a GED certificate, and some schools request ACT or SAT scores. Proof of immunizations and a current CPR certification may also be requested. Following degree completion, graduates will need to pass the required national exam to gain licensure before they can seek employment.

  • Clinical Nursing
  • Critical Care Nursing
  • Direct-Entry Midwifery – LM, CPM
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse Training
  • Mental Health Nursing

Part-Time Associate of Nursing

Students receive training in nursing ethics, pharmacology and nursing administration. If there are any deficiencies in high school math and science classes, students may be required to take the MNE placement test, which is also known as COMPASS. Some programs have supervised clinical training sessions that allow students to gain practical nursing experience in health care settings. Students learn how to assess patients as well as topics like anatomy and physiology and different nursing perspectives. Some of the coursework that can be expected includes:

  • Allied health math
  • Pharmacology
  • Human development and growth
  • Patient assessment
  • Nursing practice
  • Computer literacy

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Due to the increasing elderly population, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that employment of registered nurses would increase by about 16% between 2014 and 2024. According to the BLS in 2015, registered nurses earned a median hourly wage of $32.45, which amounts to $67,490 per year.

Continuing Education Information

Completion of a part-time associate’s degree in nursing does not qualify a graduate as a registered nurse (RN). In order to become a registered nurse, a graduate must also take the National Council Licensure Examination-RN (NCLEX-RN) for state licensure. Once this exam has been passed, the RN designation is recognized, and graduates can apply for entry-level RN positions.

For individuals who work full time and would like to complete the education required to become an RN, a part-time RN program may be a good fit. Graduates will need to take the NCLEX-RN in order to qualify for mandatory licensure. Employment in the field is projected to be above-average during the 2014-2024 decade.

Where Can I Find Free Online Christian Counseling Courses?

Free online Christian counseling courses can be found at the Master’s International School of Divinity. Students will be able to access course materials at their own convenience. Schools offering Christian Counseling degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

    What You Need to Know

Free online Christian counseling courses teach you counseling techniques, using the Bible’s teachings as a guide to the human mind and mental health. You’ll learn how to provide counseling for common issues, such as marriage, money and anger issues. You may be presented with test questions after reading each chapter to help you assess your understanding of the content.

    Master’s International School of Divinity

With these three courses, the Master’s International School of Divinity presents the Bible as a basis for providing psychological counseling. The first course is a 5-step, scripture-based counseling course where methodology is covered. In the Bible as the inerrant guide for mankind course, you’ll delve into this topic during this class, which also attempts to answer the question of the Bible’s authenticity. A third course, on the Biblical foundation for mental health, is a 6-part course (including an introduction), where students will explore the concept of sanctification as a foundation for Christian counseling. This course doesn’t address the treatment of serious mental disorders – and it is no substitute for the professional training needed to become a licensed healthcare provider – but it may help you give better advice to a fellow churchgoer.

    Biblical Directionism Counseling

    What Will I Learn?

You’ll compare Christian counseling and Biblical counseling methods, and you’ll learn how various counseling models are developed. You’ll also learn how to gather data from a counselee and apply the five-step counseling model.

    What Materials Are Included?

You need to have a Bible on hand during the course. Otherwise, study materials are easily accessed on the Master’s International School of Divinity website. Materials consist of audio highlights – which can be downloaded and played via Windows Media Player – and seven chapters of online instruction in the Biblical Directionism counseling model.

    What Assignments Will I Complete?

This course features self-correcting exams at the end of each chapter. You should take these multi-question tests if you are taking this class to earn the Certificate of Completion.

The Bible As The Inerrant Guide for Mankind

    What Will I Learn?

This course discusses the validity of the Bible, the reality of God and the scholarly and scientific debate surrounding these subjects. Opinions of theologians, professors and other preeminent thinkers are presented.

    What Materials Are Provided?

The course is presented in the form of a downloadable textbook in Microsoft Word format. The only other required text is a copy of the Bible. Written exercises based on the course chapters allow you to further explore and understand key messages.

The Biblical Foundation for Mental Health

    What Will I Learn?

You’ll cover topics like sin, grace and sanctification. You’ll learn how a cooperative effort between God and an individual can facilitate the counseling process. Scriptural examples are used throughout to reinforce Christian concepts. End of chapter questions help you assess your understanding of the material.

    What Materials Are Provided?

You can access all of the necessary materials for this course through the school’s website. The school also provides a web link to helpful Bible study tools which can aid your learning.

The University of Connecticut is home to the Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education, and Talent Development. Studies focusing on meeting the needs of gifted and talented youth have received national and international attention for over 40 years. The earliest research emphasized studies related to creativity, assessment, identification, programming, and evaluation. Several studies conducted by our research team are considered seminal research that guides the design and development of programs and services to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. The research team includes Dr. Joseph S. Renzulli, Dr. Sally M. Reis, Dr. Del Siegle, Dr. E. Jean Gubbins, Dr. Catherine Little, and Dr. D. Betsy McCoach. The team poses questions such as the following that are theory-based and practice relevant.

    • Who are the gifted and talented students?
    • How do you screen and identify potentially gifted and talented students?
    • What are examples of defensible programs and services?
    • How can gifted education programs and practices enrich students’ learning opportunities?
    • What are the most effective approaches to reading and mathematics instruction for gifted and potentially gifted youngsters?
    • How can parents and educators effectively collaborate in support of gifted students?

Historical leadership in advocating a broadened conception of giftedness, and a focus on the development of potentials in groups not ordinarily included in special programs for the gifted and talented are hallmarks of the Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education, and Talent Development. These hallmarks affect all programs and services, including campus-based graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts degree, Sixth Year Certificate, and Doctor of Philosophy degree, as well as online programs designed for students throughout the world resulting in Master’s degrees and Sixth Year Certificates. Graduates hold key leadership and research roles throughout the nation and the world.

Research and teaching are further enhanced by grant-based initiatives. The only federally funded research organization, known as The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT), has existed since 1990 with various university partnerships. As of 2006, the University of Connecticut partnership is with the University of Virginia. The current research studies for the NRC/GT are an integrated approach to identifying, serving, and evaluating academic outcomes. In addition, two federally funded model projects continue their acclaimed work in reading (Schoolwide Enrichment Model-Reading) and mathematics (Project M 3. Mentoring Mathematical Minds).

The Schoolwide Enrichment Model and its predecessor, The Enrichment Triad Model, have led to the development of an exciting new technology-based learning system. The Renzulli Learning System is an on-line program matching students’ interests and learning styles to enrich and challenge their learning opportunities.

The Renzulli Center earned recognition for its summer professional learning experiences associated with Confratute (conference institute). As of 2012, Confratute celebrates the 35th anniversary of this dynamic approach to high-end learning experiences for educators and parents. The learning experiences mirror the theoretical and practical approaches advocated for gifted and talented students.

Rounding out the research and education programs is Mentor Connection, an inquiry-based research program for talented teens. Rising juniors and seniors from across the country are selected to participate in ongoing research projects by faculty and doctoral students. Young people experience all phases of research during their 3-week residential experience. As junior professionals, they summarize their learning through a research symposium at the conclusion of their mentorship experience.

The Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education and Talent Development comprises many unique teaching, research, and service components, some of which are highlighted above. Details of these components and others are found on the pages listed on the left panel.

    Enterprise Request Management

    What is ERM?

World-class service delivery today means a relentless focus on customer-centricity–delighting internal and/or external service consumers in the fastest, easiest and most economical manner possible. Frameworks like ITIL, while not dead, have often been applied incorrectly, leading to more frustration than improvement. Service management best practices in the age of the customer need to be more agile, provide greater choice, and demonstrate value.

Enterprise Request Management, or ERM, is a concept that offers fully integrated business process automation delivered in an intuitive user interface, while employing an integrated back-end delivery model that leverages your existing enterprise software investments. This approach ensures cost-effective enterprise service delivery with first-time fulfillment, resulting in lower costs and happier customers.

    Featured Whitepapers

To share your thoughts and insights on ERM, join the Enterprise Request Management Group on LinkedIn.

The problem: Misaligned business processes waste money and frustrate customers

In shared-service environments, organizational entities (e.g. functional departments like IT, HR, facilities, marketing, accounting) use various methods to interact with “customers” (internal or external) who need business services. This includes recording and resolving incidents, defining and delivering services, and fulfilling other needs people have in order to be productive in their jobs.

In general, each business support area has its own systems and processes for managing business services delivery. Organizing service delivery in functional silos may seem logical from a departmental perspective, but it leads to inefficiency at the enterprise level. End users are often required to use different systems (for example, a service catalog limited to IT services), or at least different user interfaces, to request business services from different areas. This duplication of effort wastes time and money, creates frustration, and increased training costs.

    Self-Service ROI Calculation

In general, each business support area has its own systems and processes for managing business services delivery. This duplication of effort wastes time and money, creates frustration, and increased training costs.

The answer: Enterprise Request Management (ERM)

The Enterprise Request Management (ERM) approach replaces old-style, proprietary request management approaches with an open model that leverages information in existing enterprise applications and data sources for a centralized, efficient way to manage service requests enterprise-wide.

With ERM, business process automation follows a defined flow that assures all necessary tasks are completed in the proper order. It can include simple tasks (e.g. register a user for system access) or more complex tasks such as onboarding a new employee. Automation is applied wherever possible. ERM is an agile approach that enables organizations to augment their existing tools and processes to be more customer-focused.

ERM encompasses the complete request management process from the initial service request through costing and reporting for continuous process improvement.

Benefits of the ERM approach include:

    • Improved User Experience
    • Centralization of Business Services
    • First time and automated fulfillment
    • Leveraging Existing Systems

Nursing License Requirements in Alaska: Becoming a Nurse in Alaska

The Alaska Board of Nursing licenses LPNs and RNs. Nurses who do their education within the state are licensed by examination upon completion of educational requirements. Some of the state’s future RN graduates should see their loans repaid, thanks to the newly funded SHARP II program.

Nurses who are already licensed in other jurisdictions may be licensed by endorsement. Alaska is not a nurse compact state. Wherever else a nurse may be licensed, that nurse still needs an Alaska nursing license to practice within the state.

Select the type of Nursing License you are seeking:

Alaska conducts workforce surveys periodically during the license renewal period. Interested individuals can access these through the Board site is they want a better sense of the profession. They can find out what percentage of Alaska’s nurses are actively practicing, what their work settings and job roles are, and what their educational and career plans are. The National Nursing Database is a source of more current information when it comes to basic demographics. The NND reports that Alaska has 17,595 licensed nurses. That’s 16,084 at the RN level and 1,511 at the PN level.

The Alaska Nurses Association (http://www.aknurse.org/ ) is an additional professional resource for the state’s nurses.

    LPN Licensure Requirements in Alaska

    LPN Education Requirements in Alaska

An LPN should enroll in a program that has been approved by the Board, accredited by the ACEN. formerly NLNAC, or is comparable (if located in another jurisdiction). In Alaska, there is one approved LPN program at the Alaska Vocational Technical Center. Students may stay in dormitories or family housing units while taking nursing classes.

Before pursuing education as an LPN, an individual must be certified as a nursing assistant (NA). AVTEC requires prospective nurses to complete certain prerequisite courses and score at the 12th grade level on the TABE test. They must also have a background check, be current on vaccinations, and be able to lift 50 lbs. Learn more about the preparation and educational process at LPN Programs in Alaska .

    LPN Licensure by Examination

Later the candidate will apply to take the NCLEX-PN exam and earn a license in practical nursing. The application packet can be downloaded from the Board site (http://www.dced.state.ak.us/occ/pnur1.htm ). A passport-style photo is to be attached to the application.

The applicant must pay a total of $284, or $334 if the candidate is under a tight deadline and seeks to work under a temporary permit. An LPN may practice for up to six months under a temporary permit or until such point as the candidate receives notification of NCLEX-PN results. The candidate may register with the testing company and pay exam fees at any point along the way. Exam information can be found on the Pearson site (http://www.pearsonvue.com/nclex/ ).

Although a candidate can schedule an exam at their convenience, it is important to remember that the process takes a little time. Before the candidate can schedule an exam, the candidate will need to receive authorization to test. (Temporary permits are not issued to candidates who have failed an examination attempt or not taken an exam for which they were scheduled.)

Requirements for LPNs Licensed in Other Jurisdictions

The endorsement route (license without examination) is for candidates with current, active licensing in another U.S. jurisdiction, and in a limited number of cases, for Canadian nurses. There is a separate licensure packet for endorsement candidates (http://www.dced.state.ak.us/occ/pub/nur4014.pdf ). Candidates should make sure they have the most current version.

Endorsement candidates must demonstrate continuing competency. 320 hours of nursing practice in the preceding two years is sufficient for meeting this requirement.

An endorsement applicant may provide a certified true copy of the license. A notary will be required. Employment verification can be found in the licensure packet. License verification forms — to be sent to the state of licensing — are also found in the packet. In many cases, license verification can be done online at http://www.nursys.com .

Nurses educated in countries other than the U.S. or Canada should have their coursework evaluated by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. They must also take and pass the TOEFL or IELTS to demonstrate English competency.

    RN License Requirements in Alaska

    RN Education Requirements in Alaska

A person may qualify for an RN license by completing an associate, diploma, or baccalaureate program that is board approved, CCNE- or ACEN/NLNAC- accredited or very similar. There is just one program located in the state. The University of Alaska-Anchorage has associate’s and bachelor’s level RN programs. In order to serve Alaska’s rural population, courses are available via distance learning. The program can be completed at any of 13 locations (http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/schoolofnursing/outreach/index.cfm ). Outstanding students can compete for the school’s nursing scholarships.

If you would like more information about the RN programs in Alaska, please read Choosing an RN Program in Alaska .

    Applying for RN Licensure

Prior to applying to the Board, a candidate should have a passport-style photograph made – this will be attached to the application (http://www.dced.state.ak.us/occ/pnur1.htm ). The candidate will need to have fingerprints made on either the Board’s card (which can be requested via the website) or card FD 258 (which is available at a number of agencies that do fingerprinting).

A candidate for RN should submit a $284 fee for application, fingerprint based background check, and initial licensing fee. ($50 is nonrefundable and goes toward the processing of the application.) Education will ultimately be verified by two documents: The nursing program will send verification that requirements have been met. The candidate will later be responsible for having an official transcript sent; it must show the degree and the date conferred.

The candidate should submit an additional $50 if seeking a temporary permit (for a total of $334).It is not necessary to have the official transcript yet; the program verification will be adequate at this stage.

The permit is good for up to six months. During this time, the candidate must take and pass the NCLEX-RN. The temporary permit ceases to be valid in the event a candidate fails.

In addition to applying to the Board, candidates will need to register with the testing company, Pearson. The Arkansas Board notes that this can be done at any stage of the process. The Board will need to notify Pearson of eligibility. At this point, the candidate will receive an authorization to test.

The Alaska Board may issue a license to someone who has defaulted on a student loan or is arrears on child support, but the license will be temporary. The nurse will lose licensing is the situation is not rectified within 150 days.

Requirements for RNs Licensed in Other Jurisdictions

Out of state nurses should verify that they have done at least 320 hours of practice during the two years preceding application. Otherwise, they will need to do one of two things: demonstrate that they meet the Board’s continuing competency requirements through another pathway or take a refresher course. Any candidate who has not practiced for five years must take the refresher course. Learn more at the Board’s website: http://www.dced.state.ak.us/occ/pnur1.htm

License verification should be provided electronically through the site of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

In most cases, foreign educated nurses will be required to have their education evaluated by the CGFNS Credentials Evaluation Service and make a separate demonstration of English language competency. They may opt for either the IELTS or the TOEFL. The review is not necessary for most Canadian nurses. The language requirement does not apply to nurses educated in Canadian providences (with the exception of Quebec).

Sales Ease improves productivity and the ability of your organize to improve customer responsiveness. The IT departments, Technology Rating indicates the difficulty to maintain uptime and system administration knowledge. Overall Rating and Overall Risk provide a high level overview of the Customer Relationship Management product.

MS Dynamics scores high for management reports ( 8/10 ) utilizing MS Dynamics Reporting Services and sales ease ( 8/10 ) using MS Dynamics Forecasting and MS Dynamics Sales Pipeline. The technology rating for Microsoft Dynamics is average ( 7/10 ) because configuration can be challenging because of the Microsoft library dependencies. Overall Microsoft Dynamics scores stars with our recommendation of: Most Microsoft CRM consultants and implementers lack experience to make it successful .

MS Outlook scores high for management reports ( 2/10 ) because of a complete lack of internal reports or an ability to connect to Microsoft Reporting Services. Sales ease ( 9/10 ) because most people are familiar with Microsoft Outlook and know how to use it. The technology rating for Microsoft Dynamics is average ( 7/10 ) because configuration can be challenging because of the Microsoft library dependencies. Overall Microsoft Dynamics scores stars with our recommendation of: Most key sales reporting, forecasting and dashboards are not available in this product .

Oracle scores high for management reports ( 8/10 ) utilizing Oracle Reporting Services and Oracle Business Intelligence. Sales ease ( 5/10 ) is low because it takes skilled implementers to properly configure and streamline the sales process within Oracle CRM. The technology rating for Oracle CRM is less then average ( 6/10 ) because of the complexity and power of Oracle, configuration is best left to the professionals. Overall Oracle CRM scores stars with our recommendation of: Very long implementation times and sales rep usage hurt this high priced option .

SAP scores high for management reports ( 9/10 ) are some of the best reporting capabilities possible, especially with native integration with Crystal Reports and Business Intelligence. Sales ease ( 6/10 ) is low because of the steep learning curve and a heavily customizable environment means lower user adoption and increased training costs. The technology rating for SAP is average ( 7/10 ) because it can offer a complete turn key solution. Goldmine scores low for management reports ( 6/10 ) and sales ease ( 6/10 ). The technology rating for Goldmine is average ( 5/10 ) for poor data synchronization. Overall Goldmine scores stars with our recommendation of: Service requirements and outdated data synchronization model continues to hurt this once nice sales force automation software. Goldmine was the go to solution for small businesses, but with better offerings with easier upgrade and growth paths, SalesForce, MS Dynamics and Sage CRM are worth considering.

SalesForce scores high for management reports ( 8/10 ) utilizing extensive reporting and but fails on sales ease ( 5/10 ) because of limitations in web browser based solutions. The technology rating for SalesForce (Force CRM) is low ( 6/10 ) because of Cloud Internet latency and browser performance. Overall SalesForce scores stars with our recommendation of: Heavy scrolling and user time required to perform common functions plus system latency hurts this option. SalesForce fees for data transfer and storage need to also be factored in.

Sugar CRM scores poorly for management reports ( 5/10 ) as this is an open source solution and community developed reports are typically good enough but seldom great and serve more as examples and tutors rather then purpose. Sales ease ( 6/10 ) suffers from the same weakness, features and functionality are limited and basic aimed at serving the masses rather then being robust and extendible. The technology rating for Sugar CRM is average ( 7/10 ) because of lack of depth and integration with 3rd party technologies. Overall Sugar CRM scores stars with our recommendation of: limited depth and robustness of CRM reporting for management make this CRM product a concern. Its cost definitely makes it appealing, Sugar Open Source CRM is an excellent candidate for small sales teams that have a simple sales process, what it does, it does well.

Sage CRM scores high for management reports ( 8/10 ) utilizing MS SQL Reporting Services and Sage Reporting Services. Sales ease ( 6/10 ) is limited by configuration, new features and lagging social CRM capabilities. The technology rating for Sage CRM is average ( 7/10 ) because configuration can be challenging because of the Microsoft library dependencies. Overall Sage CRM scores stars with our recommendation of: Slow innovation, release of new features and user base growth are serious concerns to the long term viability of Sage CRM. Sage CRM is positioned as an ACT! and Goldmine competitor.

ACT! scores high for management reports ( 7/10 ) has decent native reports and integration with Microsoft SQL Reporting Services. Sales ease ( 9/10 ) makes ACT! one of the most friendly to use, highest user adoption CRM. The technology rating for ACT! is average ( 6/10 ) because of technology and data structure limitations that limit robustness and customizability. Overall ACT! scores stars with our recommendation of: Data limitations hurt this most popular CRM; recommended for individuals and small teams .

SalesLogix scores high for management reports ( 8/10 ) utilizing SalesLogix Reports, MS SQL Reporting Services and Crytal Reports. Sales ease ( 9/10 ) using SalesLogix Forecasting and SalesLogix Sales Pipeline that leads to high user adoption for sales and marketing teams. The technology rating for SalesLogix is average ( 7/10 ) because configuration can be challenging because of the Microsoft library dependencies. Overall Microsoft Dynamics scores stars with our recommendation of: New feature growth and cloud CRM adoption rate are a concern for this good value mature CRM software .

WITHDRAWING FROM CLASSES: PROCEDURES AND IMPACT ON GRADES

From the beginning of the 4th week until the end of the 9th week of classes, you may officially withdraw from a credit-bearing course. To do so, you must submit a withdrawal form signed by your professor to the Registrar’s Office in the Tower, lower level. A “W” (Withdrawal) will appear on your transcript and is not calculated in your Grade Point Average (GPA), but can impact your Academic Standing. (Note. You cannot withdraw from remedial/developmental courses.)

After the ninth week of the semester, an official withdrawal is permitted only at the professor’s discretion.

If you are registered for a course and stop attending without following the official withdrawal procedure, it will be treated as an unofficial withdrawal, resulting in a grade of “UW”. Grades of “UW”are included in calculating the GPA and count as an “F”.

You may wish to talk with an advisor about the impact of withdrawing from a course before doing so.

If you register for a course and never attend, you will be given a grade of “NA” (Never Attended). This grade is not calculated in your GPA but, like the “W” grade, can impact your Academic Standing.

Signs of Poorly Vented Plumbing Drain Lines

Signs of and solutions to a toilet venting problem

If you have air bubbles that rise up through your toilet bowl (except when it flushes) or notice the water level rising and falling, you probably have a clogged or improperly vented toilet. This is especially true when you have an appliance like a clothes washer nearby. Your drain line is gasping for air.

When you pour liquid from a can, you’ll notice that it doesn’t flow evenly unless you have a second opening for air. The same holds true for plumbing. As water goes down a drain, air is needed to equalize the pressure in the drain line.

This is the purpose of a venting system. If the drain lines in your home have poor venting (as in Figure A, for example), water rushing down the drains will pull water from nearby P-traps. The drain in the toilet bowl is basically a P-trap. If the problem just started, it’s probably a blocked drain or vent that needs to be “snaked” out. And since the water in the toilet is dropping and gurgling, it’s likely that the problem is near that area.

Unfortunately, a clogged or missing vent is tough to fix, since it usually requires breaking into the walls to examine the drain system. Unless you have plumbing experience, this project is best left to a professional.

Figure A: Common Example of Poorly Vented Drains

Venting in this system is missing, or the vents don’t open to “free” air.

Finding the Right DSST Exam for You

Congratulations! You ve decided to pursue a college degree. There s no denying that planning a curriculum can be overwhelming, especially considering the sheer number and variety of courses available to you. But, if you re looking to complete a few general requirements or earn credit for subject matter you re already familiar or experienced with, taking a DSST credit-by-exam is the time-saving and affordable way to do it. Since DSST offers more than 30 exams across a number of disciplines, we ve broken down a few scenarios to help you figure out which one (or ones!) may be right for you. Before you enroll for any exam, however, be sure to verify that the college or institution where you intend to pursue your degree accepts DSST credits.

Choose Exams That Complement Your Field of Study

The fact is, most schools won t allow students to test out of classes related to the core curriculum in their field of study. So, one approach to figuring out which DSST exam is best suited to your needs is to think about subject areas that complement your desired field of study. If you re interested in pursuing a degree in healthcare, for example, consider DSST s physical science exam offerings, which cover topics such as astronomy, health and human development, and environmental science.

Choose Exams on Topics You Already Know

Take a step back and think about the things you re already good at. Do you moonlight as a writer or are you a confident public speaker? The idea is to use the knowledge you already have to earn college credits. Let s say you re interested in studying finance, but you ve mastered some technical skills as a hobby or as part of a job requirement. DSST course offerings in technology may be perfect for you. Leverage what you already know about cybersecurity, software development, and data networks so that you can spend your time focusing on financial audits and tax preparation.

Choose Exams That Will Count for General Education Requirements

Still not sure which DSST exam can help get you where you want to go? When in doubt, go back to the basics your general education requirements. One college class could cost you as much as $750, but for as little as $80, you could take a DSST exam and earn the same amount of credits toward your degree. There are over 1,900 institutions that accept DSST credit, which puts you in the position of enjoying maximum return on investment.

No matter where your strengths or interests lie, you can t go wrong with DSST s suite of exam offerings, which include over 30 exams across six different academic disciplines. Click here to learn which subjects are available, which institutions accept DSST credit, and details about test-taking. With DSST prior learning exams, you can be one step closer to earning that degree!

    CSS newbie

Published April 2, 2009 by CSS Newbies.

There are lots of reasons you might want to offer your users more than one CSS file for your website:

    • You want to offer a stylish low-contrast and an easy-to-read high-contrast version of your site.
    • You have many low-vision readers and want to give them easy access to a customized stylesheet with a larger typeface.
    • Your site is schizophrenic and you want to be able to change the look quickly.

Whatever the reason, it s amazingly easy to create a function that swaps between multiple stylesheets using jQuery.

The first step of course is to build several different CSS files, which we ll then swap between. Once that is done, we can dive into the XHTML and jQuery that makes the magic happen.

    The XHTML

First, we need to create a set of links that will allow the user to swap between CSS files. You can make this as simple or as fancy as you d like. For the sake of brevity, my links are simple:

Here I have three links, each with a rel attribute indicating which CSS file the link will load. Technically, I could have just as easily put this information in the href attribute, but I didn t want to for one specific reason: if the user has JavaScript disabled and the CSS file is listed in the href, then clicking the link will send the user to the CSS file directly (not loading it like we intended). But our way, if JS is disabled, the user gets nothing at all: which is certainly preferable to the less savory alternative.

    The jQuery

Like I promised, the jQuery is really simple:

This function waits until the document is loaded (generally an important step when interacting with the DOM), then attaches a click function to each of our nav anchors. The function basically says, when someone clicks on this link, replace the link (stylesheet) tag s href attribute with the contents of this link s rel attribute. The return false at the end just stops the browser from trying to follow the link.

Of course, you might have to get more detailed if you have more than one link tag, for example, but that s easily done by giving the link tag a class ( changeme, for argument s sake), and writing something like this:

And while this stylesheet switcher is already complete, we might want to give it some memory: after all, your users might get annoyed if they have to switch their styles back to their preferences every time they visit your site. For that, we ll need to set a cookie. And to make that easier, I ll use the jQuery cookie plugin (which I ve talked about previously when building a popout ad ).

With the plugin loaded, we can modify our jQuery thusly:

Now we have two statements. The first one checks as soon as the page is done loading to see if a cookie called css has been set. If so, it sets the stylesheet to be the one indicated in that cookie. Otherwise, it does nothing.

Our click function is much the same, except after we set the stylesheet, we also set a cookie. This cookie doesn t expire for an entire year (and each time the user changes their stylesheet preferences, it would reset this timer), giving them a good 365 of CSS bliss.

    Fine Tuning

There is one minor annoyance with this stylesheet switcher: there s generally a flash of the default CSS when the user loads the page. That s because the script waits until the document is ready before switching the link s href. There is a way around this: moving the first if statement outside of the document ready function, like so:

Generally speaking, you don t want to run any jQuery until your document is ready. However, so long as your jQuery comes after your link tag in your document structure, like shown below, this shouldn t be a major concern:

This means your jQuery will run before the document is done loading, and thus your link tag s href will be swapped before your CSS has been applied. As I said before, it s generally a bad idea to manipulate the DOM before document ready, but because we know the exact tag we want to manipulate and can place our jQuery below it in the DOM, we should be safe in this one specific instance.

Should You Dispute Negative Items on Your Credit Report?

    by Miranda Marquit 45 comments

Credit repair services and credit monitoring services often make it a point to dispute negative items on your credit report. This is because negative information about your payment history, and inaccurate information about your credit habits, can damage your credit score. When you dispute these negative items, the creditor that reported them has 30 days to respond. If the reporting company does not, the credit bureau changes or removes the information, and you end up with a better credit score .

However, this credit tactic rarely works as planned. This is because disputing negative items is not a surefire way to have them removed from your credit report. When you dispute negative items, you are asking for a review of the item, checking it for accuracy. If the item is, in fact, accurate, then it will remain on your credit report. While the dispute will not lower your score further, it can represent wasted time and energy.

When and How to Dispute Negative Items on Your Credit Report

If your credit card company reported a late payment, and your payment was in fact late, disputing your report is likely to get you nowhere. Your creditor will simply check into it, say that your payment was late, and your report will remain the same. However, if your payment was not late, then you should dispute that information.

You should dispute negative items on your credit report when they are inaccurate. If something shows up as incorrect, whether it be your account balance, a duplicate account (this happened to me), a missed payment, or some other negative inaccuracy, you should dispute the item. Here are the steps to take when you dispute a negative item on your credit report:

    1. Gather documentation to support your claim, and make copies.
    2. Write a letter to the credit bureau, stating your name, address and Social Security Number, and explaining the reason for your dispute.
    3. Enclose your copies of your documentation with the letter. Make sure you keep a copy of the letter, and the originals of your documentation, in a safe place at home.
    4. Send the letter via registered mail so that you can be sure that the credit bureau received it.
    5. Contact your creditor directly. This can help speed things along. Let your creditor know (you can send the same letter and copies never originals of documentation via registered mail or by phone) what item you are disputing, and why. If you are right, the creditor can change the reporting on it more quickly .
    6. Double check your credit report after 30 days. Credit bureaus must make their investigation with the time frame of a month. When 30 days have passed, you should double check your credit report to see that the negative item has been removed. Remember this 30 days does not start until the bureau receives your letter, so you give it a few extra days.

It is not always worth disputing negative items on your credit report especially if they are accurate. However, if you find inaccurate information that is negatively impacting your credit score, it is in your best interest to dispute, and have the problem fixed as soon as possible.

i disputed alot of negative items on my credit report and now I have alot of comments that say consumer disputes account or consumer disputes account information will these go away once the 30 day investigation is done or when the items are verified or will I have another set of problems to try and get off my credit report? Is this typical to have those comments on every item disputed?

    Jason Reece says:

If the creditor who reported negative information is no longer doing business, there will be no way to confirm it and it will be removed from your file. I m not saying it s right or wrong dispute such items, simply making an observation. =) And I have had three negative items removed in the last eight months because the companies are no longer in business or they didn t care enough to respond to the credit bureaus within the allotted 30 day period.

The blog post isn t all that helpful when it comes to disputing credit reports It doesn t mention the easiest way to do it, the way I disputed mine many times in the past. From the free annual score (www.annualcreditreport.com), it allows you to electronically dispute any information with 2 of the credit bureaus (1 needs you to write in by hand). It s quick and easy, and makes it really worth your time to dispute any and all negative information because, frankly, it won t hurt you anymore if it comes back that it was accurate. You don t need any supporting information (though you can choose to send some in if you want), and basically fill out a very short form, picking the reason for the dispute from pull-down menus.

Best of all, it s 100% free to use direct from the particular credit agency, with no signups for any annoying services (just keep an eye out for anything that tries to sell you something and/or signup for additional garbage; you can opt out of any of the free trial anythings they offer, and you don t have to buy your credit score or whatnot. You can if you want, but you don t have to.)

You sound like a professional copywriter who is trying to push annualcreditreport.com s services. Other things I read (lawyer sites, for example) suggest that your approach isn t very effective, especially if you have to file a suit.

    Hi Bob,
The simple truth is that annualcredit report is FREE! It is there as your RIGHT to use! So you CAN and SHOULD use it for disputes. It costs you NOTHING to do so!

Absolutely the best thing to do. I also had a problem of similar circumstances and did the same thing. It brought my credit up by over 40 points. Sometimes the cost is high but you don t always have an option. I fought mine even with proof and nine months later I still had the negative.

I agree, this doesn t make sense. Paying it in full will not remove the item. It only changes it from unpaid to paid . This can potentially improve one s credit rating, and it shows other lenders that you re serious about boosting your creditworthiness, but it doesn t make it disappear entirely. Also, why wouldn t you have challenged the fraudulent check at the time you first discovered it?

Without a question, you should dispute any negative items well before you ever need a loan. It s a hassle, but any mistakes could cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars potentially so fix it or pay for it.

October Existing Home Sales Expand, While New Home Sales Slip

BEDFORD, MA NOVEMBER 28, 2016 Sales of existing homes improved more than expected in October to the highest level since February 2007. The National Association of Realtors reported last Tuesday that sales of previously owned homes rose 2.0% in October, to a seasonally adjusted annualized pace of 5.60 million units. Compared to a year earlier, homes resales jumped 5.9%.

October s strong gains were widespread with expansion occurring across all regions. In the South, existing home sales rose 2.8% over the month to an annual pace of 2.22 million units. Growth in purchases also outpaced the nation in the Midwest, rising 2.3% to 1.36 million units. In the Northeast, sales improved 1.4% to 750,000 units. While sales in the West saw the smallest gain, rising just 0.8%, they reached a seven-year high of 1.27 million units. Year-over-year resales also rose across all regions. In the West (+10.4%) sales jumped by double-digits. The Midwest (+6.3%) and South (+4.7%) also posted healthy annual growth while sales improved by a more modest rate in the Northeast (+1.4%).

The national increase in October was solely due to a 2.3% rise in purchases of single family dwellings to a nine and a half year high of 4.99 million annualized units. Growth in single family resales outpaced the nation in the South (+3.1%) and Midwest (+2.4%). Expansion was softer in the Northeast (+1.4%) and West (+0.9%). All regions also saw sales improve over the year. Gains outpaced the nation in the West (+9.9%) and Midwest (+6.7%), but were also significant in the South (+5.9%) and Northeast (+3.3%).

Meanwhile, existing condominium sales were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 610,000 units unchanged from September and from a year ago. Sales over the month were also flat across all regions. In contrast, year-over-year sales varied widely across the country. As with the nation, condominium resales were flat in the Midwest. Sales slumped 7.7% in the Northeast and dropped 3.8% in the South. These large declines were offset by a 14.3% surge in resales in the West.

The inventory of existing homes available for sale rose a modest 3.0% over the month to 1.76 million seasonally adjusted annualized units. Still, strong sales kept the months supply nearly flat at 4.3 months. A six-month supply is typically considered a healthy balance between supply and demand. The median home price inched up 0.5% over the month but gained 6.3% over the year to a seasonally adjusted $223,000, marking the fifty-eighth consecutive month of year-over-year gains.

The positive news about existing home sales was dampened on Wednesday by the Commerce Department s report on new single family home sales. Sales dipped 1.9% in October to a four-month low of 563,000 annualized units. While the report was disappointing, new home sales represent less than ten percent of all sales and are traditionally a volatile series. Year-over-year purchases, which are a better indicator of the general trend, improved by double-digits for the seventh straight month in October jumping 17.8%.

Regionally, sales were down from September across most regions. In the Midwest sales slumped 13.7%, while in the Northeast (-9.1%) and South (-3.0%) the declines were more moderate. Meanwhile, sales in the West leapt 8.8% over the month. The 17.8% gain in national sales over the year was driven by the West (+28.7%) and South (+17.9%). Sales in the Midwest rose 8.6% from October 2015 while sales in the Northeast fell 6.3%.

Weak sales forced the number of new homes available for sale to climb 2.9% from September to a seven-year high of 246,000 units. At the current pace of sales, it would take 5.2 months to deplete the available inventory. A 1.3% increase brought the median price of a new home to a seasonally adjusted $310,000. The median price of new homes is now 31% above the median price of existing single family homes.

The outlook for the housing market in the coming months is shaky. On the positive side, wages will inch up as the labor market nears full employment. More millennials will become homeowners as they continue to settle down and start families. However, while the gap between rising home prices and wages is narrowing, inventories will continue to shrink putting upward pressure on prices. Compounding this issue is rising mortgage interest rates. Over the past month, mortgage rates have surged 50 basis points to a fifteen-month high of 4.03%. In addition, the Federal Reserve appears on track to raise interest rates in December and rates are likely to continue to increase alongside inflation.

    Lab Environment Setup

    • There is no need for a physical lab space.
    • All the lab activities can be carried out on students’ computers .
    • We provide VM images, and all the labs have been tested in the images.
    • All software used in the lab environment is open-source and free .

    Virtual Machine Software (VirtualBox)

Install the free VirtualBox. Our pre-built VM images can be used by both VMWare and VirtualBox. Here are some instructions for VirtualBox:

    • How to run our pre-built VM image with VirtualBox .
    • Network Configuration in VirtualBox for SEED labs (“NAT Network”). This is a newly added network type in VirtualBox (since version 4.3 in 2014); it basically combines the NAT adapter and Host-only adapter into one adapter called “NAT Network”. We will be using this adapter for all our SEED labs, instead of the previous “NAT + Host-only” option. You need to make sure that your VirtualBox is updated to the most recent version.
    • Loading Multiple VMs into VirtualBox: Problems and Solutions .

    Pre-built Virtual Machine Images (Ubuntu)

Currently, we have three images (Ubuntu9.11, Ubuntu11.04, and Ubuntu12.04). Most labs can be conducted in any of these images. Some labs depend on a particular image, and in that case, the dependence will be clearly stated in the lab’s web site. If you do not see such a statement, assume no dependence. All the labs that work in Ubuntu 11.04 also work in Ubuntu12.04, so there is no need to use Ubuntu11.04 any more. We have already stopped supporting Ubuntu11.04.

    • ( New ) SEEDUbuntu12.04.zip. This is a revised Ubuntu 12.04 image (revised in Jaunary 2016). In this image, we added the support for several of the newly developed labs.
      • Download the image from the following server (the MD5 checksum of the file is 6ec9c429a2f4a9163530ada20f0621dc):
        • Main server
        • Backup server
      • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.
      • VM Customization. Some labs require multiple VMs; to help you easily identify which VMs you are in, you can do some simple customization. You need to download this file (Customization.zip ) as well
    • SEEDUbuntu12.04.zip. This image, built in September 2013, is based on Ubuntu 12.04. This VM officially replaces SEEDUbuntu11.04. All the labs that work in SEEUbuntu11.04 also work in this new VM.
      • Download the image from one of the following servers (the MD5 checksum of the file is 50a3ba75ddd49b6647c2411d68edceea):
        • Server at Syracuse University .
      • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.
      • Unzip the image, and follow our VirtualBox instruction to run it in VirtualBox.
    • SEEDUbuntu11.04.zip (replaced by SEEDUbuntu12.04). This image, built in August 2011, is based on Ubuntu 11.04.
      • Not available any more
      • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.
    • SEEDUbuntu9_August_2010.tar.gz. This image, built in August 2010, is based on Ubuntu 9.11.
      • Not available any more
      • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.

    For Minix-based labs

Some of the SEED labs (not many) are based on the Minix operating system. You should get the Minix 3 VM image from its official web site.

    SQL Server Backup Best Practices

The absolute worst time to find out that your recovery plans don t work is right in the middle of a critical system restore. Follow these SQL Server backup best practices to ensure that you really can restore your system when (not if) it goes down.

    Perform Full Backups Daily

A full database backup is the foundation for every DBA s data protection plan and in most cases should be performed daily. SQL Server supports online backups, allowing end users and SQL Server jobs to be active while the backup operation occurs. Even so, large databases can take a long time to back up. Strategies for reducing the backup window include backing up to disk and utilizing backup data compression.

    Perform Frequent Transaction Log Backups

Next most important is to back up the transaction log, which contains all of the recent activity in the database and can be used to restore a database to a given point in time. Backing up the transaction log also truncates it, keeping it from becoming full. Like database backups, transaction log backups can occur while the system is active. Organizations with active databases might back up the transaction log every 10 minutes while those with less active databases might need to back up the transaction log only every half hour or every hour.

    Regularly Back Up System Databases

Your backup strategy is incomplete without a plan to back up SQL Server system databases (master, model, msdb). These databases contain system configuration information as well as SQL Server job information that needs to be restored as part of a total system restore. Back up system databases daily for frequently changing instances, weekly for more stable installations.

Back Up the Host OS Daily

SQL Server runs on top of the OS and an event such as a hardware failure could require a complete system restore, beginning with the OS. Therefore, daily backups of the host OS are a good idea. At a minimum, back up the host system partition following any system updates or configuration changes.

    Practice Recovery Operations

Changing business requirements can affect your plans, quickly making backup strategies obsolete. Test your strategies regularly in different scenarios, including both system and individual database restores, to ensure your backup plans really work when you need them.

For her birthday, I gave my sister a card embossed with golden print that reads The economy stinks. Be happy you got this card. However disappointing the birthday gift (and my attempt at a joke) most likely was, the shiny message on it is accurate. And in this economy, which has forced companies to nudge and sometimes shove employees out of positions, I ve noticed a change in attitude toward job hunting. Here in the United States (and even in countries with better economies), it seems that changing jobs is not only accepted, it s almost expected. And just like on Match.com, It s OK to look. In fact, our network of IT products includes a free resource that even makes it easy to look: IT Job Hound.

Mike, I am being pressured by the IS Director to use CA Backup Exec (or the like) in lew of regular SQL Server backups. I tried to explain how Full, Differential and Tran log backups are used to restore to a point in time by identifying T-SQL transactions and log sequence numbers. He insists that there are third part tools available that are easier to use (not a good reason in my book!) and continuously take pictures of changes. What is you take on said tools and which, if any, would you recomend. tnx, G. Douglas Clavell Seven Feathes Hotel and Casino Canyonville OR.

First of all, I’m assuming you are always backing up your SQL server to disk and the server people have already figured in the space requirements and have allocated that space to you. Remember, they are part of your backup plan. With that assumption, like the article says, you should backup changes every 10-30 minutes in case of hardware failure. How often you create a full backup is really up to the individual business to decide. The questions become, how long can you stand to be down? Restoring a full backup and a days worth of logs takes less time than a full and a weeks worth of logs. As to being able to restore to a certain point, as long as you are keeping the last 2 weeks of full and/or log backups on tape, you shouldn’t have a problem restoring to any point. So the questions become, how often do I want to transfer the SQL backups to tape? and how far in the past do I want to be able to restore to? Hopefully you are backup up to a seperate server in case the SQL server goes down. And hopefully you are taking the backup media offsite at least daily in case the data center burns down. Or you have a backup SAN offsite that you just copy the backups to once they are created, again, in case the data center burns. All in all, a great article explaining the use of full backups and transaction logs. Use some common sense to implement the right backup scheme for your environment using seperate servers or portable media.

Why a FULL backup every day? You realize you limit your ability to recover to a certain point of time with every FULL backup you perform. Suppose we need to go back 4 days ago because the corruption was noticed until then? Now how are you going restore? You already toasted your full backup a couple of days ago. I prefer a FULL once a week. And differentials throughout the production hours. After a week, my data has been clean enough to go through another weekly full backup. If a user then calls me and says on Thursday, I need the backup from Tuesday, I can easily say sure which one, morning, afternoon or evening. Doing fulls daily limits your ability to restore via multi-days. And if you attempt to SAVE your DAILY backups, and you have a large database, well you’ll have the server dept calling you. Do a full once a week. Do diffs between that time whatever the business needs decides. You’ll see your diff backups are much smaller. If you have an error, backup the tranlogs and go from there. If you need to restore you’ve got a lot of choices. Same thing with system dbs. And I’d be REALLY surprised if you’re MAKING changes DAILY on jobs, schedules, etc, creating new or altering your schema, or your one tired puppy! The article doesn’t even tell you why you back them up. And far be it from actually RESTORING the system databases. Me I set mine to once a month, or heck once a quarter, knowing if I had to, I’d just re-intall SQL and restore because messing around with system dbs are no fun and causes extra headaches when I can do a clean re-install. Not much of a BEST practice article. I was expecting a little more from Otey. disappointing. Andy

    Mark (not verified)

The most important thing about a backup is it works when you need it. To work it needs: 1) to be a complete backup set 2) current 3) supports a restore process that’s tested, works, and has contingency in it. When we set a backup schedule we look at what we’re trying to protect. We’ll reimage the OS in a heartbeat. So we only backup the OS weekly. If the DB has a warm standby, it only gets a full backup weekly and incrementals on the daily basis (plus the log backups during the day). More importantly than setting the schedule is confirming the backups are working. 1) did the jobs complete when expected? If they are late, it’s a sign your equipment is failing, or your requirements are changing, either require action. 2) are the restores working? You need to measure both of those things. Additionally, I measure the actions taken on #1 and #2. If the rate of action is changing. why..are we managing better or worse, and then what action should that drive. There’s a lot more to best practices for DB backup than setting a schedule.

Seems to omit the use of differential backups.

    • Adding and Subtracting Decimals – The student will be able to add and subtract numbers with place values to the hundredths.
    • Adding Integers – Students will use two different types of cereal to practice adding positive and negative integers. This will help them visualize how numbers cancel each other out.
    • Drawing Nets of 3 Dimensional Objects – Students will be able to use concrete materials to help them understand the concept of nets. Being able to take an object and spread it out flat is much easier to see in concrete terms rather than in the abstract.
    1. Estimating – The student will be able to estimate the cost of three new items and the length of time necessary to save the money for those items.
    2. Finding circumference, diameter, and radius – This activity will allow students to measure the circumference, diameter, and radius of a circle in a hands-on way. By being able to manipulate a circle and stretch it out the idea of circumference will be more concrete. Students will use each other, desks, and chairs to create circles that can be measured.
    3. Finding Square Footage – The student will be able to calculate the square footage of a given area.
    4. Graphing – This activity will introduce graphing. The teacher will guide the students as they work together to develop questions, set up a blank graph, interview other students, and fill in the graph with the results. A teacher created worksheet can be completed at the end of the activity to reinforce the concept.
    5. Introducing a standard unit of measure: the foot – This activity will introduce the concept of a standard unit of measure. Students will measure various objects in the classroom using their own feet and a ruler. By comparing their results with their classmates, they will be able to see the value of a standard unit of measure.
    6. Math on a Map – Students will practice finding a variety of information using a satellite picture of their hometown. This would be a great activity to use for review or when there is a substitute.
    7. More or less (or the same) – For this activity, students will work in pairs to play a game. The teacher will introduce the concepts of more, less, and the same. The whole class will play a game with the teacher using dominoes before dividing into pairs to play the game.
    8. Ordering Numbers – Students will work together to practice ordering groups of six and seven numbers. They will use their phone numbers and birth dates written on index cards.
    9. Patterns – This activity will help students see the logic of creating patterns and help them begin to be able to create their own.
    10. Percentages – Students will be able to apply percentages to real life situations by figuring the amount of income tax that will be withheld from a salary.
    11. Plotting points on a graph – The students will use graph paper to plot points on a graph. When the points are connected they will make a familiar shape, number, or letter. They will practice reading co-ordinates to each other, as well as, practice plotting them. The activity is meant to be fun and light, not competitive or stressful.
    12. Polygons – The students will explore and create a poster design using polygons. The posters will be displayed in the classroom and students will be challenged to name as many of them as they can. This activity will allow students a tactile, expressive way to learn about polygons.
    13. Roman Numerals – The student will be able to recognize and name roman numerals up to twenty.
    14. Rounding to the nearest five – Students will enjoy practicing rounding numbers as they try to be the first to cover all their numbers in this game of Bingo. The teacher can set the pace for this game. It can be set at a beginning level with a lot of discussion and helps or it can be played as a speed round where students are racing to find the right numbers.
    15. Symmetry – The student will be able to identify objects that are symmetrical and draw half of an object by looking at the other half.
    16. Using Tangrams to Find Patterns – Students will create patterns using tangram pieces inside a shoebox lid. After they have placed the pieces in the lid, they will count how many shapes there are. So, if they use triangle shapes, they will count how many different triangles there are in the shoebox lid.
    17. Value of Coins – The student will be able to choose the appropriate combination of pennies, nickels, and dimes needed to total the amounts listed on a series of five index cards.

5 Belly Types, What They Mean, and How to Get a Flat

    #

At any given time of year, at least a few of the magazines on the shelves will have some article or headline dedicated to helping you finally achieve that oh-so-coveted flat stomach, six pack abs, toned tummy, sexy midriff whatever you want to call it. For many of us, though, we do our best to eat right and exercise on a regular basis, and while the rest of our body looks fit, our mid-section doesn t seem to change. This is because not all tummies are caused by excess weight, so trying to lose weight won t change them.

That being said, most tummies are unfortunately related to weight gain, so let s first take the time to understand whether this is the root cause for you.

2 Main Types of Belly Fat

    1. Visceral Fat

This belly type generally has to do with having too much excess body fat. Unlike men, who traditionally carry their fat around their middle and have thinner limbs, most women carry their extra fat in their hips and thighs (for childbearing purposes) and on their arms and chest area. When those areas run out of space, fat storage will begin to happen around the middle. This visceral fat is a problem because it accumulates right around our internal organs. It is linked to metabolic disturbances and an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type two diabetes. For women, in particular, it can contribute to the development of breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery. (1)

The most effective way to get rid of this type of belly fat is through proper diet and exercise .

    2. Love Handles

Not belly fat, but still in that region, love handles sound sexy but are another sign of dangerous visceral fat. Again, this type of tummy is a red flag for risk of more serious medical conditions down the road and is a sign that some concentrated lifestyle changes need to take place, the sooner the better. Love handles causes your body to become stressed and inflamed. which is the number one cause of chronic disease. Lose the fat, decrease the inflammation. and you will not only achieve a flat belly, but you will be healthier because of it. (1)

Often, women going through menopause will start to notice the development of love handles that weren t there before. Losing weight during menopause is challenging, but not impossible. Consider making these changes to help you lose the belly fat no matter what age you are: (2)

Cut out Sugar: Including candies, desserts, and sugary drinks

    Eat fewer fried foods

Consume more fruits and vegetables and fewer meats and cheeses

Exercise more and incorporate more movement into your day

3 Belly Types and Why You Don t Have a Flat Tummy

Sometimes your inability to achieve a flat tummy despite reaching your body goals everywhere else could be a sign of a more serious health problem. If you have any of the symptoms listed here, consider talking to your doctor about them.

    1. Bloating Throughout the Day

A moment of truth here: Bloating sucks! It s uncomfortable and completely covers up the fact that you have been doing all the right things to have the tummy you want. There are many reasons why we (especially women) get bloated, and it s important to understand them so we know how to respond. (3)

Hormonal (PMS): Any women with a uterus knows what this one is like. Bloating due to menstruation is an unfortunate fact of life for most pre-menopausal women, and it s not one that you can do much about. Thankfully, it is not a sign of anything dangerous (if anything, it shows that your body is in working order), however, if you suffer from really difficult, painful PMS symptoms there are solutions. Make sure to talk to your doctor or naturopath if your PMS is particularly unbearable. (3)

Digestive Issues: If you are constantly finding yourself bloated, especially after meals, even when you are not on your period, this could be a sign of problems such as IBS. ulcerative colitis, celiac disease. or food sensitivities. Certain digestive conditions can be determined from a blood test, however just because your test comes back negative does not mean you may not still have a problem.
Keep a journal where you track what you ate, when you ate it, and how you felt immediately after as well as a couple of hours later; this will help you to determine which food or foods are causing you difficulty. Consider trying the elimination diet with some of the most common food offenders (wheat, dairy, soy, nightshades, legumes, etc.). Lastly, consult a nutritionist or naturopathic doctor for help. (3)

Fluid Retention: Sometimes a little belly bloat is actually caused by excess fluid retention around your middle. This could be edema or ascites and could be a sign of liver disease or certain cancers. Talk to your doctor immediately if you struggle with excess fluid retention. (3)

Dehydration: Coupled with electrolyte imbalance, dehydration will slow your digestive system right down, which causes food to sit longer and cause gas and bloating. You may also experience fluid retention as your body overcompensates while trying to recover and rehydrate. (3)

Constipation: Having stool in your intestine will give you a hard feeling stomach, pain, gas, and bloating. Constant constipation is usually caused by lack of fiber in the diet, not enough water and physical activity, and too much stress. Constipation could be a sign of something more serious, however, so if it persists despite making healthy lifestyle changes, talk to your doctor.(3)

SIBO: Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth from abnormal bacteria in your GI tract will cause gas and bloating. When harmful bacteria take over your intestines, they damage your stomach and intestinal lining making it difficult to digest food and produce unwanted gas. Some foods can cause this, and there are some dietary changes you can make to repopulate your gut with good bacteria. (3)

Bowel Obstruction: This could be caused by scar tissue or a tumor that grows and presses on your bowel. This blocked bowel will then retain fluid and stool, which not only causes bloating but also abnormal bowel movements and can be very painful. Bowel obstruction can be dangerous, so talk to your doctor immediately if you suspect this for yourself. (3)

Cancer: Bloating can be a sign of colon cancers or uterine cancers. Check for other potential cancer markers and see your doctor right away. (3)

    2. Lower Belly Pooch

This is normal for most women, and doesn t necessarily mean something is wrong (it just means you have a uterus!). However, if it is exaggerated, or changes over time, this could be a sign of uterine fibroids. If you also experience extremely heavy or long periods, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, difficulty emptying your bladder, constipation, or back or leg pains, get checked by your doctor to take care of this problem. (4)

    3. Post-Partum Tummy

Congratulations! You had a baby, and guess what? Mummies have tummies! It is perfectly acceptable for any women who has had children, recently or not, to have a little bit of a tummy. Pregnancy changes your hormones and your body, and that is normal. Of course, proper diet and a healthy exercise routine can help to get rid of your post-baby belly.

For mom s wanting to start exercising, there are only a few rules you need to follow: (5)

Wait: Vaginal births usually require a minimum of 6 weeks before continuing a normal exercise routine, and cesarean sections can take even longer. Your doctor can help you determine what timeframe is best for you.

Start slow: Gentle kiegel and pelvic floor exercises are best in the weeks following delivery, and gentle walks will get you moving outside with your baby without causing stress on the body.

Start with lower impact cardio and work your way up in intensity. For strength training, start with body weight or light-weight (baby weight?) exercises focusing on stability, control, and left and right side balance before going heavy again.

Take advantage of post-partum and other fitness videos on YouTube and elsewhere. There are plenty of exercise videos and classes geared towards moms in all post-baby stages!

Try exercising with your baby (baby-weight squats!), and consider investing in a baby backpack, carrier, or a specific walking and jogging stroller. Participate in local mother-baby classes to help you work out with your baby and get to know other new moms in the area.

As you can see, there are any number of reasons why you may have a belly that you are struggling to get rid of. Make sure to assess all of your symptoms, and if you are even just a little concerned, consult your doctor or a naturopathic doctor to help you make sense of your symptoms and keep your health on the right track.

    The Nomenclature of Peptide Hormones

World Wide Web version prepared by G. P. Moss

These recommendations are as close as possible to the printed version [see Biochem. J., 1975, 151. 1-4; Biochemistry, 1975, 14. 2559-2560; Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1975, 404. 152-155; Eur. J. If you need to cite these rules please quote these references as their source. In the web version footnotes have been converted into notes following the paragraph to which they apply.

Any comments should be sent to any member of the Committee

In the last two decades, the structures of many peptide hormones have been elucidated and other peptide hormones have been obtained in pure form. However, there are presently no accepted guidelines for nomenclature in this field. Therefore, the IUPAC-IUB Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature (CBN) appointed a subcommittee consisting of R. A. Acher, R. A. Boissonnas, H. B. F. Dixon, R. Guillemin, P. Karlson (Convenor), H. Rasmussen, J. Rudinger, and N. A. Yudayev to discuss the question of the nomenclature of peptide hormones and to report to CBN. The International Union of Physiological Sciences nominated, as consultants to the subcommittee, A. Brodish, S. M. McCann, and F. Ulrich. The present Recommendations are based on the report of this subcommittee.

    1. General Principles

Naturally occurring oligo- and polypeptides are generally referred to by trivial names; their systematic names are so cumbersome that they are of little use. Most of the peptide hormones already have well established trivial names indicating either natural source (e.g. insulin) or physiological action (e.g. relaxin, prolactin). However, some of the trivial names are so long that these hormones are known mainly by abbreviations (e.g. FSH for follicle-stimulating hormone). This is unfortunate, and it was therefore considered advisable to create suitable names for those peptide hormones not already having well established short trivial names. Three principles have been observed:

    (a) new names for hormones of the adenohypophysis bear the ending “-tropin”;

    (b) hypothalamic releasing factors (hormones) bear the ending “-liberin”;

    (c) hypothalamic release-inhibiting factors (hormones) bear the ending “-statin” (see below).

    2. Trivial Names

The trivial names proposed for peptide hormones are given in the “Appendix.” Abbreviations of the new names are not proposed, and the use of currently fashionable abbreviations is discouraged.

    3. Species Designation

Since peptide hormones show species variation in their amino-acid sequence, their names are essentially “generic names”, and are insufficient to specify a single chemical compound. It is therefore recommended that authors add to the name of each hormone the species from which the hormone was isolated, or at least indicate the biological source(s) where appropriate in each paper.

    4. Special Groups of Hormones

    (a) Hypothalamic Factors (Hormones) – The hypothalamic “releasing factors” or “releasing hormones” have no well established trivial names. It is recommended that the trivial names given in the “Appendix” be used for the releasing factors (hormones). They are based on the ending “-liberin” added to the prefix of the pituitary hormone released by the factor. Thus, “thyroliberin” indicates the hypothalamic peptide stimulating the release (and perhaps also the biosynthesis) of thyrotropin, the corresponding tropic hormone, from the pituitary gland. (Note that the ending “-tropin” is no longer retained in the name; it is implied in the definition of “-liberin”.)

The names of those factors inhibiting the release (and perhaps the synthesis) of pituitary hormones are formed in a similar way with the suffix “-statin. “

    (b) Pituitary Hormones – Most of the hormones ofthe adenohypophysis have acceptable trivial names ending in -tropin. The committee has created the missing names for follicle-stimulating hormone, “follitropin,” and for luteinizing hormone, “lutropin.” It is recommended that pituitary hormones discovered in the future also be named with the ending -tropin, This suffix should be restricted to pituitary and similar hormones and should not be used for, e.g. crustacean hormones acting on pigment cells.

Note The committee has re-evaluated the arguments for and against the suffix “-trophin,” still used by many anatomists and physiologists. Since the bioassay systems are based mostly on effects other than the trophic one, it was decided to recommend “-tropin” for general usage in biochemistry.

Some placental hormones are physiologically very similar to pituitary hormones. They are named accordingly with the prefix “chorio-“, e.g. choriogonadotropin for chorionic gonadotropin.

    (c) Invertebrate Peptide Hormones -Though some of the invertebrate peptide hormones have been isolated in pure form and their amino-acid compositions have been determined, the field has not yet developed to a stage where a list of names seems warranted.

It is, however, recommended that the suffixes defined above for hypothalamic and pituitary hormones not be used in a different sense in invertebrates. Thus, a crustacean color change hormone acting on, e.g. erythrophores, should not be named “erythrotropin,” a hormone causing release of eggs and/or sperm in sea urchins should not be called “gametoliberin.”

    Appendix. List of Peptide Hormonesa

a For convenience, some biologically active peptides that may not fulfill all criteria of a hormone are included.

b Abbreviations, old or new, are not recommended; they are given here for identification purposes only.

c This name indicates a hypothalamic substance releasing gonadotropin. It may also be used for the decapeptide isolated from pig hypothalami and known as luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulatinghormone releasing factor, abbreviated LH/FSH-RF, b since the peptide induces the release of both lutropin and follitropin in constant proportions and thus carries the activity of both luliberin and folliberin (see also Footnote e ).

d The chorionic gonadotropins have in most species (including man) the action of both follitropin and lutropin and are therefore termed “gonadotropins.”

e Gonadotropin is to be used for hormones having the activity of both follitropin and lutropin, like the gonadotropins of cold-blooded vertebrates. It may also be used for impure preparations containing lutropin and follitropin.

    f In elasmobranch fishes.

h Two peptides have been sequenced and designated a -melanotropin and b -melanotropin.

    i In birds and reptiles.

j The name of this hormone is derived from Greek wkntokos (OKYTOKOS = fast birth, prompt delivery), not from the Greek oxns (oxys = acid; fast). The spelling ocytocin should therefore be preferred; moreover, it avoids confusion with oxy, meaning “related to oxygen.” However, oxytocin is in wide use, especially in the English language. Therefore, both spellings are listed as optional.

k Most work has been done on the human hormone, known as Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (HMG); it is a pituitary hormone, chemically changed during passage through the kidney. Due to its occurrence in urine, it has been termed “urogonadotropin.”

l Parathyrin is a new name suggested here. The synonym Parathormone is a proprietary name.

m The name “somatomedin” was suggested by a group working in the field (Nature235. 107 (1972)).

n A polypeptide from the thymus. The name proposed was suggested in a letter to Nature (249. 863 (1974)) to avoid confusion with the earlier “thymine” from nucleic acids. “Thymin” should be abandoned.

First fought Human Torch (Invaders #22, 1977); fought Black Marvel, corporate ties revealed (Marvel Knights Spider-Man #9, 2005); death of brother, disintegrator gun (Captain America Comics #63, 1947); used imposters of Torch Toro (Human Torch Comics #27, 1947); revealed to have cancer (Saga of the Original Human Torch #3, 1990)

    Killer Murdock (brother, deceased)

The Asbestos Lady was a gifted scientist who designed a flameproof costume from asbestos and wielded a flame-thrower and guns that fired asbestos-lined bullets.

Victoria Murdock was the sister of “Killer” Murdock, a racketeer, and used her brother’s connections to begin a career as a criminal scientist. She provided herself and her accomplices with asbestos-lined clothing to protect them from fire, then set fires to hold back the police while they robbed banks. Wanting to exploit her asbestos gimmick even further, the Asbestos Lady looked up Fred and Nora Raymond, a pair of leading asbestos scientists, intending to force them into assisting her. The android hero of the ‘40s, the Human Torch. came to the couple’s rescue, and rounded up the Asbestos Lady’s gang while she escaped.

Determined to make the Raymonds pay, the Asbestos Lady spied on them, and when the couple left town on a train, she placed a tree trunk ahead on the tracks, derailing the train and killing them both. However, the Raymonds’ son Thomas survived, and joined a circus where he became Toro, the Fire-Eating Boy. Hearing of his act on the news, the Asbestos Lady decided to kidnap him. Expecting the Human Torch to appear again, she and her gang drove a truck full of water towards the circus and pretended to spin out of control when they saw the Torch. When the hero came to assist them, they hosed him with water and threw him in the tank. However, the Torch generated so much heat within the tank that the steam burst the truck open, and he melted the Asbestos Lady’s feet to the asphalt road to keep her from escaping.

The Asbestos Lady continued in her career, and in the midst of one crime was captured by the Black Marvel. She eventually was approached by a collection of businessmen who feared the coming of superheroes, and they funded her to continue on as the Human Torch’s chief adversary. When her brother was captured by the Torch and Toro and was ultimately executed, she attempted to take his place in racketeering, taking control of his gang and assuming possession of a disintegrator gun he had found in Germany. She tried to kill the Torch and Toro with the gun, but the Torch melted it, and she barely escaped them. In her next plot, she had her gang trap the fiery duo and throw them into a lake, then supplied one of her men with a costume which could simulate the Human Torch’s powers, sending him on a crime spree to make the authorities think that the Torch had turned against them. However, the Torch and Toro escaped the trap at the lake, and the Torch pretended to be the Asbestos Lady’s own underling until he returned her, then knocked out his imposter.

The Asbestos Lady was again imprisoned, but learned in the years that followed that she had contracted cancer due to her constant exposure to asbestos. Her final fate is unknown, but she is believed to have succumbed to the disease.

50 Mapreduce Interview Questions and Answers Part – 1 – Hadoop Online

    #

A few of the hadoop Mapreduce Interview questions and answers are presented in this post. These are suitable for both beginners and experienced mapreduce developers.

    Table of Contents

Mapreduce Interview Questions and Answers for Freshers:

    1. What is Mapreduce ?

Mapreduce is a framework for processing big data (huge data sets using a large number of commodity computers). It processes the data in two phases namely Map and Reduce phase. This programming model is inherently parallel and can easily process large-scale data with the commodity hardware itself.

It is highly integrated with hadoop distributed file system for processing distributed across data nodes of clusters.

    2. What is YARN ?

YARN stands for Yet Another Resource Negotiator which is also called as Next generation Mapreduce or Mapreduce 2 or MRv2.

It is implemented in hadoop 0.23 release to overcome the scalability short come of classic Mapreduce framework by splitting the functionality of Job tracker in Mapreduce frame work into Resource Manager and Scheduler.

    3. What is data serialization ?

Serialization is the process of converting object data into byte stream datafortransmission over a network across different nodes in a cluster or for persistent datastorage .

    4. What is deserialization of data ?

Deserialization is the reverse process of serialization and converts byte stream data intoobject data for reading data from HDFS. Hadoop provides Writables for serialization and deserialization purpose.

    5. What are the Key/Value Pairs in Mapreduce framework ?

Mapreduce framework implements a data model in which data is represented as key/value pairs. Both input and output data to mapreduce framework should be in key/value pairs only.

    6. What are the constraints to Key and Value classes in Mapreduce ?

Any data type that can be used for a Value field in a mapper or reducer must implement org.apache.hadoop.io.Writable Interface to enable the field to be serialized and deserialized.

By default Key fields should be comparable with each other. So, these must implement hadoop s org.apache.hadoop.io.WritableComparable Interface which in turn extends hadoop s Writable interface and java.lang.Comparable interfaces.

    7. What are the main components of Mapreduce Job ?
    • Main driver class which provides job configuration parameters.
    • Mapper class which must extend org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.Mapper class and provide implementation for map () method.
    • Reducer class which should extend org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.Reducer class.
    8. What are the Main configuration parameters that user need to specify to run Mapreduce Job ?

On high level, the user of mapreduce framework needs to specify the following things:

      • The job’s input location (s) in the distributed file system.
      • The job’s output location in the distributed file system.
      • The input format.
      • The output format.
      • The class containing the map function.
      • The class containing the reduce function but it is optional.
      • The JAR file containing the mapper and reducer classes and driver classes.
    9. What are the main components of Job flow in YARN architecture ?

Mapreduce job flow on YARN involves below components.

      • A Client node, which submits the Mapreduce job.
      • The YARN Resource Manager. which allocates the cluster resources to jobs.
      • The YARN Node Managers. which launch and monitor the tasks of jobs.
      • The MapReduce Application Master. which coordinates the tasks running in the MapReduce job.
      • The HDFS file system is used for sharing job files between the above entities.
    10. What is the role of Application Master in YARN architecture ?

Application Master performs the role of negotiating resources from the Resource Manager and working with the Node Manager(s) to execute and monitor the tasks .

Application Master requests containers for all map tasks and reduce tasks.Once Containers are assigned to tasks, Application Master starts containers by notifying its Node Manager. Application Master collects progress information from all tasks and aggregate values are propagated to Client Node or user.

Application master is specific to a single application which is a single job in classic mapreduce or a cycle of jobs. Once the job execution is completed, application master will no longer exist.

    11. What is identity Mapper ?

Identity Mapper is a default Mapper class provided by hadoop. When no mapper is class is specified in Mapreduce job, then this mapper will be executed.

It doesn t process/manipulate/ perform any computation on input data rather it simply writes the input data into output. It’s class name is org.apache.hadoop.mapred.lib.IdentityMapper .

    12. What is identity Reducer ?

It is a reduce phase’s counter part for Identity mapper in map phase. It simply passes on the input key/value pairs into output directory. Its class name is org.apache.hadoop.mapred.lib.IdentityReducer .

When no reducer class is specified in Mapreduce job, then this class will be picked up by the job automatically.

    13. What is chain Mapper ?

Chain Mapper class is a special implementation of Mapper class through which a set of mapper classes can be run in a chain fashion, within a single map task.

In this chained pattern execution, first mapper output will become input for second mapper and second mappers output to third mapper, and so on until the last mapper.

Its class name is org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.lib.ChainMapper .

    14. What is chain reducer ?

Chain reducer is similar to Chain Mapper class through which a chain of mappers followed by a single reducer can be run in a single reducer task. Unlike Chain Mapper, chain of reducers will not be executed in this, but chain of mappers will be run followed by a single reducer.

Its class name is org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.lib.ChainReducer .

    15. How can we mention multiple mappers and reducer classes in Chain Mapper or Chain Reducer classes ?

    In Chain Mapper,

      • ChainMapper.addMapper() method is used to add mapper classes.
      • ChainReducer.setReducer() method is used to specify the single reducer class.
      • ChainReducer.addMapper() method can be used to add mapper classes.

It is not possible in case of secondary name node, however it can be possible in check point node concept which has introduced in hadoop 2.x.x on word. If in case of SPOF failure of name node. we can retrieve meta data information by making copy from FSIMage and Edit file in daily, weekly or hourly basis.

In other word Secondary name node has only read access of meta data but check point have both read write authentication.

You guys are really doing a great job Thank you.

Awesome questions Especially chain mapper and reducer..
can you please give one use case /example where we need chain mapper and reducer ?
