The 105-year-old technology giant is quietly dismantling its popular decades-old remote work program to bring employees back into offices, a move it says will improve collaboration and accelerate the pace of work.

The changes comes as IBM copes with 20 straight quarters of falling revenue and rising shareholder ire over Chief Executive Ginni Rometty’s pay package.

The company won’t say how many of its 380,000 employees are affected by the policy change, which so far has been rolled out to its Watson division, software development, digital marketing, and design — divisions that employ tens of thousands of workers.

The shift is particularly surprising since the Armonk, N.Y. company has been among the business world’s staunchest boosters of remote work, both for itself and its customers. IBM markets software and services for what it calls the anytime, anywhere workforce, and its researchers have published numerous studies on the merits of remote work.

In the past, IBM has boasted that more than 40% of employees worked outside traditional company offices, and a May 4 post on the company’s Smarter Workforce blog stated that telework works.

IBM may be part of a broader rethink of remote work under way at large companies, as corporate leaders argue that putting workers in the same physical space hastens the speed of work and sparks innovation. Employers tread a fine line, however, since workers rate flexible-work programs highly, and research has found telecommuters often work more effectively than their cubicle-bound counterparts.

Yahoo Inc.’s decision to call telecommuters back to the office in 2013 set off a furor among employees and workplace experts. Yet more recent decisions at Bank of America Corp. and Aetna Inc. to greatly reduce telecommuting have elicited little outrage.

Big Blue’s leaders want employees to work differently now, said Laurie Friedman, a company spokeswoman. The company has rebuilt design and digital marketing teams to quickly respond to real-time data and customer feedback, collaborations that happen more easily when teams work shoulder-to-shoulder, Ms. Friedman said, adding that the vast majority of IBM’s telecommuters have chosen to join their teams in person.

Workers in affected IBM divisions have been given 30 days to decide whether to move to company-maintained office space that can be hundreds of miles away from their homes.

For example, marketing employees were invited to move to offices in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, New York or San Francisco, or leave the company. Those unwilling to move were also given 90 days to seek another role within IBM.

The changes have stunned longtime IBMers like marketing manager Ron Favali. The 15-year company veteran has spent the last 12 years working from an office in his home outside Tampa, Fla. and considered himself a remote-work success story.

His team uses IBM’s Sametime instant-messaging voice and video chat software to stay connected and on task, despite being scattered in three states. Working remotely came with career trade-offs, he said. I was never going to be named vice president of marketing for anything, but I’m okay with that.

He has declined IBM’s offer to return to a company workspace, and will leave the company next month to start a marketing firm out of his home.

Companies began offering generous remote work policies because they expected large savings in office and real-estate costs, said Jennifer Glass, a University of Texas professor who studies telecommuting and advises companies on remote-work strategies. Those savings haven’t materialized, Ms. Glass said, so workers are being called back to the office.

Relocating offices or asking employees to move can sometimes be read as layoffs in disguise, since a certain percentage of workers won’t be able to relocate.

IBM says its co-location plan isn’t a cost-saving measure. Ms. Friedman noted that the employees who cannot join an in-person team can apply for one of more than 5,000 open jobs in the U.S.

Working from the master bedroom in her Ogden Dunes, Ind. home, Penny Schlyer helped market IBM mobile software and services for companies reliant on workers who aren’t bound to a desk, such as retail employees, financial advisers or doctors.

Her seven years telecommuting with IBM could have been plucked from one of her marketing campaigns: she has logged work hours from the sidelines of her sons’ sporting events and used Sametime to communicate with her colleagues.

She was dismayed when IBM requested the 48-year-old mother of three move to the company’s New York City office. The irony is definitely not lost there, she said.

Though IBM offered to pay for the move and make a small cost-of-living adjustment to her salary, Ms. Schlyer declined. I could never afford to live in New York City, and probably not anywhere close.

She has found a new job leading product marketing for SA Ignite, a Chicago-based software company, but her office won’t change: she is still in the master bedroom.

Indian business intelligence (BI) software revenue is forecast to reach US$245 million (in constant currency) in 2017, a 24.4 percent increase over 2016 revenue of US$206 million, according to Gartner, Inc. The BI platforms segment (comprising of modern and traditional BI platforms) continues to lead the BI software market in India (see Table 1). All segments of the BI software market (other than the traditional BI segment) are expected to experience double-digit growth in the next two years in India.

We see signs of the emerging importance of data management and analytics in India as senior executives are increasingly exploring the different styles of analytics to resolve their business imperatives, said Mr. Zaidi. There is an increased emphasis on the ability to access, monitor, process and analyze the ever growing organizational data due to the advent of IoT, big data and cloud for business management, and strides towards a digital business. Big data use cases are maturing and have executive visibility. This is leading to more investments in data management and analytics.

Purchasing decisions continue to move from IT leaders to line-of-business executives and users who want more agility and more flexible personalized options making the land-and-expand model the new norm. This is in stark contrast to the large, enterprise-scale deals that fueled double-digit growth at a time when IT had larger budgets and wielded much more influence in buying decisions, Mr. Zaidi said.

Gardasil Researcher Speaks Out

Dr. Diane Harper says young girls and their parents should receive more complete warnings before receiving the vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. Dr. Harper helped design and carry out the Phase II and Phase III safety and effectiveness studies to get Gardasil approved, and authored many of the published, scholarly papers about it. She has been a paid speaker and consultant to Merck. It’s highly unusual for a researcher to publicly criticize a medicine or vaccine she helped get approved.

Dr. Harper joins a number of consumer watchdogs, vaccine safety advocates, and parents who question the vaccine’s risk-versus-benefit profile. She says data available for Gardasil shows that it lasts five years; there is no data showing that it remains effective beyond five years.

This raises questions about the CDC’s recommendation that the series of shots be given to girls as young as 11-years old. “If we vaccinate 11 year olds and the protection doesn’t last. we’ve put them at harm from side effects, small but real, for no benefit,” says Dr. Harper. “The benefit to public health is nothing, there is no reduction in cervical cancers, they are just postponed, unless the protection lasts for at least 15 years, and over 70% of all sexually active females of all ages are vaccinated.” She also says that enough serious side effects have been reported after Gardasil use that the vaccine could prove riskier than the cervical cancer it purports to prevent. Cervical cancer is usually entirely curable when detected early through normal Pap screenings.

Dr. Scott Ratner and his wife, who’s also a physician, expressed similar concerns as Dr. Harper in an interview with CBS News last year. One of their teenage daughters became severely ill after her first dose of Gardasil. Dr. Ratner says she’d have been better off getting cervical cancer than the vaccination. “My daughter went from a varsity lacrosse player at Choate to a chronically ill, steroid-dependent patient with autoimmune myofasciitis. I’ve had to ask myself why I let my eldest of three daughters get an unproven vaccine against a few strains of a nonlethal virus that can be dealt with in more effective ways.”

Merck and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintain Gardasil is safe and effective, and that adequate warnings are provided, cautioning about soreness at the injection site and risk of fainting after vaccination. A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found while the overall risk of side effects appears to be comparable to other vaccines, Gardasil has a higher incidence of blood clots reported. Merck says it continues to have confidence in Gardasil’s safety profile. Merck also says it’s looking into cases of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, reported after vaccination. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Merck and the CDC say there is currently no evidence that Gardasil caused ALS in the cases reported. Merck is also monitoring the number of deaths reported after Gardasil: at least 32. Merck and CDC says it’s unclear whether the deaths were related to the vaccine, and that just because patients died after the shots doesn’t mean the shots were necessarily to blame.

According to Dr. Harper, assessing the true adverse event risk of Gardasil, and comparing it to the risk of cervical cancer can be tricky and complex. “The number of women who die from cervical cancer in the US every year is small but real. It is small because of the success of the Pap screening program.”

“The risks of serious adverse events including death reported after Gardasil use in (the JAMA article by CDC’s Dr. Barbara Slade) were 3.4/100,000 doses distributed. The rate of serious adverse events on par with the death rate of cervical cancer. Gardasil has been associated with at least as many serious adverse events as there are deaths from cervical cancer developing each year. Indeed, the risks of vaccination are underreported in Slade’s article, as they are based on a denominator of doses distributed from Merck’s warehouse. Up to a third of those doses may be in refrigerators waiting to be dispensed as the autumn onslaught of vaccine messages is sent home to parents the first day of school. Should the denominator in Dr. Slade’s work be adjusted to account for this, and then divided by three for the number of women who would receive all three doses, the incidence rate of serious adverse events increases up to five fold. How does a parent value that information,” said Harper.

Dr. Harper agrees with Merck and the CDC that Gardasil is safe for most girls and women. But she says the side effects reported so far call for more complete disclosure to patients. She says they should be told that protection from the vaccination might not last long enough to provide a cancer protection benefit, and that its risks – “small but real” – could occur more often than the cervical cancer itself would.

“Parents and women must know that deaths occurred. Not all deaths that have been reported were represented in Dr. Slade’s work, one-third of the death reports were unavailable to the CDC, leaving the parents of the deceased teenagers in despair that the CDC is ignoring the very rare but real occurrences that need not have happened if parents were given information stating that there are real, but small risks of death surrounding the administration of Gardasil.”

She also worries that Merck’s aggressive marketing of the vaccine may have given women a false sense of security. “The future expectations women hold because they have received free doses of Gardasil purchased by philanthropic foundations, by public health agencies or covered by insurance is the true threat to cervical cancer in the future. Should women stop Pap screening after vaccination, the cervical cancer rate will actually increase per year. Should women believe this is preventive for all cancers – something never stated, but often inferred by many in the population– a reduction in all health care will compound our current health crisis. Should Gardasil not be effective for more than 15 years, the most costly public health experiment in cancer control will have failed miserably.”

CDC continues to recommend Gardasil for girls and young women. The agency says the vaccine’s benefits outweigh its risks and that it is an important tool in fighting a serious cancer.

Dr. Harper says the risk-benefit analysis for Gardasil in other countries may shape up differently than what she believes is true in the US. “Of course, in developing countries where there is no safety Pap screening for women repeatedly over their lifetimes, the risks of serious adverse events may be acceptable as the incidence rate of cervical cancer is five to 12 times higher than in the US, dwarfing the risk of death reported after Gardasil.”

Liquidity

With mutual funds, you have freedom. You can withdraw any or all of your money at any time. However, at the time you sell your shares (the number of units you own in the fund), you are paid what the shares are worth that day calculated at the end of the trading day. Their worth may be higher or lower than what you paid for them.

Return

Mutual funds are professionally managed by fund managers with lots of experience investing money. They bring wisdom to what and when the fund buys and sells. As experts, they are taking care of your money, and their past performance can be measured. But you have to remember that their past performance does not guarantee success in the future.

Mutual funds need money to operate to pay the fund managers and to do business. The fund gets this money by charging fees to anyone who invests in the fund. Think of it as paying dues to belong to the fund.

The Process of Quantitative Data Analysis

Quantitative analysis is largely a matter of knowing what data to look for and then knowing what to do with it. Analysts must know a number of different statistical techniques to manipulate raw data and turn it into something useful for individuals and companies. That means not only must analysts know the basics of statistical analysis, but they must also employ the cutting edge technologies to model and calibrate their data.

Before an analysis can even begin, analysts must prepare a data plan that will guide them through the process of analyzing a giving situation. Analysts must understand the context of the market or company they are evaluating, as well as the nuances of the given subject of analysis, both of which require research and creative thinking. If an analyst fails to understand the market environment or misses a crucial piece of data, they may produce flawed recommendations and cost a company or individual a great deal of money and even lose their own job. As a result, having a plan requires a great deal of attention to detail and assessing all possibilities in a given situation.

The second step to analysis is finding the data. Analysts can collect this data through personal observation or by amassing reports compiled by others, either the owner of a set of financial assets or disinterested third parties. If an analyst is preparing an investment plan, for instance, he or she must look at stock reports, risk assessments of available company stocks, costs of derivatives, individual portfolio data, and more. The data for each step of a single recommendation can be vast and overwhelming, and it is the analyst’s job to process, quantify, and prioritize all of the available information before it can be useful.

Once all of the data is secured, organized, and quantified, it is time for the actual analysis to begin. The individual steps of quantitative analysis depend upon the data plan. Sometimes the information sought can be found with an easy analysis of descriptive statistics looking at means, medians, standard deviations and the like. Other times the analyst seeks more complex information such as correlations, probabilities, and skewness, looking respectively for associations between different data, frequency and likelihood of specific events, and outliers to larger bits of data.

For even more complex data, an analyst must deploy statistical and mathematical models to make sense of the information they have collected. Statistical models are formal ways of describing the relationships between data variables. Analysts apply these models to their data in an attempt to understand how one bit of data relates to the next. If the data fits a certain model, the analyst can draw certain conclusions about that data. Using modeling, analysts can also simulate what will happen if they recommend one course of action over another.

How the analyst interprets the results of their analysis and modeling determines what recommendations they make. If for instance the analyst found that based on their data a certain type of stock that had been declining was likely to increase over the next seven months, due to a cyclical nature of those stocks in the market, the analyst would recommend adding stocks of that type to a portfolio. Others may have been reluctant to invest in that same stock because of its current downward trajectory, but because the stock fit a model the analyst applied to it, the investor may enjoy the benefits of the analyst’s interpretation of the data and subsequent prediction.

The successful analyst can employ many different techniques for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting financial data. Some rely more heavily on mathematical models and stochastic calculus to determine the exact right price value of an asset. Others prefer statistical modeling and educated guesses on the future of particular markets. Either way, quantitative data analysis requires an exact and efficient mind to turn raw data into successful financial action.

What does the sales forecast template do? This template is an easy-to-use Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that allows you to input your expected sales figures per quarter, along with your overheads. As you plug in your numbers, it automatically calculates quarterly and annual figures for:

The sales forecast template is also professionally formatted, making it perfect for printing and sharing with your business partners or small business banker. Using the sales forecast template Our sales forecast template helps you to accurately identify projected sales on a quarterly and annual basis. By completing a sales forecast, you won’t be operating in the dark – and you’ll be less likely to be caught off guard at the end of the quarter or year. Using a sales forecast to predict sales and profit also allows you to:

  • Establish targets.
  • Monitor progress.
  • Address expected shortfalls or windfalls.

Note that this is a sales forecast, not a cash flow forecast. While you’ll want to enter your overheads like rent, salaries, and utilities, you don’t need to get too deep into your expenses. Sales forecasting for start-ups

Sales forecasting is hard for start-ups because you don’t have any past records to use as a basis for your forecast. However, you can use external data. In order to complete a sales forecast for a start-up, you’ll need to:

  • Look at trends.
  • Check out past statistics of market demand.
  • Find out what your competitors are doing.
  • Work out what you need to do to break even.

Sales forecasting for established businesses

If you’ve started, then look at:

  • Last year’s sales.
  • Opportunities coming up.
  • Any threats on the horizon.

For example, if your business averages about 500 customers per quarter with an average sale of $300, that’s your starting point. Assuming nothing changes, you could expect total sales of $150,000 for the quarter. However, opportunities may exist – such as a competitor going out of business or an expansion into a new market. Do you intend to exploit those opportunities? If so, factor that in. How many of your competitor’s customers might you be able to attract or how many new customers do you think you can convert in a new market? The same is true of potential threats – such as an economic slowdown or change in legislation affecting your business. How will these threats affect your sales? Will you lose customers? Will they scale back their purchases? Will your average cost per sale go up? Again factor threats into your forecast. Because opportunities and threats can affect your sales, you’ll want to complete a SWOT analysis as part of a sales forecast for an existing business.

How to use our sales forecast template

Using our sales forecast template is easy, but you’ll need to download it to your computer first. From there, complete the following steps Step 1. Open the sales forecast template in Microsoft Excel or a compatible spreadsheet application. Step 2. Enter your name and company name in the ‘Prepared By’ (C3) field. Note that the Date field (F3) is automatically generated. Step 3. Enter your projected sales figures for each quarter. You’ll need to know the following:

  • Number of customers (per quarter).
  • Average sale per customer.
  • Average cost per sale.

The template will automatically calculate your total sales and gross profit for each quarter and the year based on the data you ent Step 4. Enter your overheads for each quarter. These are your recurring costs such as rent, advertising, postage, uniforms, taxes, payroll, motor vehicle expenses, and salaries. The template includes suggested overheads. If your business doesn’t incur some of these overheads, that’s fine. Use the ‘Other’ field to list any other overheads not listed. The sales forecast template calculates your total overheads and net profit automatically based on the data you enter. Step 5. Examine your results – print your completed sales forecast out and refer to it each quarter to ensure that you’re on target. If you regularly create and monitor sales forecasts each year, your future forecasts are likely to become more accurate.

Gas prices keep going up, and the money in our wallet keeps evaporating more quickly. There are many ways you can spend less money on gas and reduce your overall fuel consumption. But, you must think it through and begin formulating new plans! One technique that has been around for a while but has drawn more attention recently is hypermiling. However, use your head because some hypermiling techniques are illegal and extremely dangerous.

Change those spark plugs often! Platinum spark plugs may claim to last 100,000 miles (160,000 km), but they have been known to foul up at just 75,000 miles (121,000 km). [citation needed ] Spark plugs are relatively inexpensive and (depending on the vehicle) easy to replace. If you’re not that handy or mechanically inclined, read some auto repair books or be-friend a mechanic.

Limit your driving. This article includes ideas such as carpooling, combining trips and taking the first parking spot you find.

Find good gas prices . This article offers tips about making sure you are paying a competitive price for the gas you do buy. Be sure to recognize the value of the gas you spend to go out of your way.

Take care of your car . A properly maintained vehicle will run more efficiently and give you better mileage, which saves you money in gas.

Fill up efficiently. This involves three things:

  • Consider whether to fill your tank up full or halfway. Filling up your tank halfway will reduce your car’s weight, increasing your mileage slightly. However, if your nearest gas station is significantly out of the way of your daily route, make sure to take into account the gas spent driving to the station and the value of your time.
  • Don’t top up your tank between fills. It is wasted money and bad for the environment because it invariably forces liquid fuel into the evaporative emissions system, where it overwhelms circuits that route fuel tank vapors to the engine. [citation needed ]
  • Wait until you have a quarter tank, but don’t push this any further. Doing this can extend your gas mileage because you are hauling a lighter fuel load. It also gives you the opportunity to buy more gas if you run across a bargain. However, in cold weather, you run an increased risk of condensation in the fuel tank. Running a car with less than a quarter tank can shorten the life of the electric fuel pump, and running on empty will often destroy the pump.

Top off the air in the tires every few weeks to the car manufacturer’s recommended pressure. This is best done when the tires are cold (have not been driven on more than a mile or so). It is proper for them to have a few psi higher pressure after extensive driving, but filling them hot should generally be avoided unless they are very low on air to avoid inaccuracy. Excessive pressure adds very little efficiency and can cause bad handling and uneven tire wear. Some gas stations, notably Sheetz gas stations, have air pumps that are free to use and automatically inflate the tires to a pressure set on the pump. These are very convenient. (If an automatic pump seems to be adding an unexpectedly large amount of air, double-check its progress with a hand air gauge to avoid overfilling.)

  • In California, gas station operators are required to offer free air to customers who purchase fuel.

If you are always stuck in rush hour traffic after work anyway, try to find something to do near your work until the traffic dies down, rather than try to fight through it.

Learn how to coast between traffic lights, applying power only as needed to keep the car rolling (more or less) with traffic. Learn to judge terrain and use engine braking to its full potential to keep the car moving ‘for free’, and save more gas over time.

Most car modifications do not improve mileage. Extra wings add drag. Power improvements often hurt mileage. However, if your car is turbocharged, chiptuning may result in a mileage boost. The mileage boost will be canceled out if you drive more aggressively due to power improvements.

Keep meticulous records of what you spend and how many miles you drive so you can quickly spot changes in vehicle performance. It will also help focus you on the goal of saving.

A manual transmission saves an average $1000 on the cost of a new vehicle, and eliminates routine transmission maintenance that an automatic transmission requires (and most people never do this maintenance once the warranty is up – so a used car with an automatic can be a risky purchase). In some cases, a manual transmission gets slightly better mileage overall than an automatic transmission.

Every MPH faster yields you less advantage than the last one. Going 10 mph (16 km/h) is a big difference over 5 mph (8.0 km/h), but there is very little difference between 55 mph (89 km/h) and 60 mph (97 km/h), unless you are on a very long trip. Many people mindlessly speed wherever they go, and gain absolutely nothing but a heftier fuel bill. Assuming everything goes perfectly (and when does it?) going 5 mph (8.0 km/h), even 15 mph (24 km/h) faster on a highway for a short trip will yield nothing but aggravation as you keep catching up to slower traffic.

Many of these tips change slightly if your engine is turbocharged or diesel. For instance, diesel engines use almost no fuel while idling. Diesel trucks will often be left idling all night to provide heat or power for the trucker inside the cab, at the cost of relatively little fuel.

Get a smartphone app that helps to find the cheapest gas.

Often the right-most lanes keep moving more than the left-most in areas prone to traffic-jams. Vehicles continue to exit, which keeps leaving ‘gaps’ to fill in.

Why should my LLC be manager managed?

The biggest benefit of having a manager managed LLC, is that a manager does not have to be an owner. So if someone looks up your LLC on the secretary of state website, they will more than likely see your name as either a member or manager.

In most states you will need to tell the state whether you are “member managed” or “manager managed.” You then have to list the members or managers. If you are manager managed, the odds are that you won’t have to publicly disclose the members on the articles and it won’t show up on the state secretary of state website who the members are. You could also list another LLC as the manager, to further keep your information off the public records.

Biggest reason for a manager managed LLC:

If you have silent investors or an investor that isn’t going to be a part of the day to day running of the LLC, you’ll want to be manager managed. If you’re starting an LLC, and it’s your idea, but you need 5 family members to chip in some cash to get it going, you’ll want to be the only manager, and list the 5 family members and yourself as members. That way the members (your family) won’t be in the way of you running your LLC. Members vote who is going to be the manager, so your members can always replace the manager, but as you’ll see on the operating agreement, the manager would have to be replaced by a vote of the members, formalized in writing, and signed by all the members. This creates a layer of formalities. If you and your 5 family members were all members and the LLC was member managed, you could very easily create disputes amongst yourselves. Let’s say you have an argument at Thanksgiving dinner and all of a sudden 2 of the members decide they are going to close the bank account If you were member managed, they could do so, but if you’re manager managed, they would have to go through the manager, or have to vote someone else into a manager role, or replace you as the manager to make such a change.

There should almost always be a manager if multiple people are involved in the funding of your LLC.

What’s the difference with a manager managed LLC operating agreement?

The biggest difference with your manager managed LLC operating agreement should be the added complexity of how the members will stay out of the managers operational duties. The members still need strict guidelines as to how the membership percentages will be given, how the LLC will breakup, and how the members could buy each other out. But with a manager managed LLC operating agreement, the point is to give the authority only to a manager to run the LLC.

For LLCs with multiple owners, where one of the owners doesn’t work at the LLC: manager managed LLC operating agreement.

Multiple members and you think you’re invincible: don’t even worry about the LLC operating agreement. Hopefully nothing will ever go wrong in your life and you’ll never need it! But we recommend you think twice before selecting this option, especially since our operating agreements are free.

They must agree to fill a vacancy at a publicly funded facility in a full-time, part-time or casual-on-call capacity.

Students in Nursing programs are eligible for up to a $2,000 bursary if they apply for a BC student loan. They will automatically be assessed when they apply. This is based on financial need.

How to Get Your Cat Certified as a Therapy Cat

It shouldn t surprise any cat person that cats make wonderful therapy animals. We all know how soothing and therapeutic a little cat love can be. It s incredible how kitties can shift your mood so quickly, easing anxiety, erasing a bad day, and alleviating sadness. With a bit of training, you and your personal therapy cat might be an asset to others as well. Here s the scoop.

What are therapy cats?

Therapy cats and their handlers are trained to assist mentally, emotionally, or physically ailing humans in relaxation and healing.

Therapy cats are assets in many situations. One group that benefits greatly from a little cat-love therapy is children. Therapy cats have been used to help kids with developmental disorders like autism be more comfortable with the world around them. Therapy cats also pay visits to speech and hearing centers, schools, and hospitals, including children s hospitals.

Therapy cats help tremendously in nursing homes, where patients may welcome some fur time. And, for some patients with Alzheimer s, cats can often prompt pleasant memories.

Even some prisons leverage cat therapy to offer inmates some much-needed comfort and distraction.

What programs train and certify therapy cats?

A variety of organizations train and certify pet therapy teams (that s you and your cat, by the way!). Pet Partners is one of the most well-known national organizations that facilitates and promotes animal-assisted therapy and offers training and registration for therapy animal teams. Love on a Leash is another national organization. Some areas have local organizations, like the Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association in Troy, Ohio.

To find the best option in your neck of the woods, search the Internet or check with your local humane society.

How do you and your cat become certified?

To train as an official cat-therapy team, you need to meet minimum requirements, which vary by the certifying organization. The Pet Partners program, for example, requires that the cat is at least one year old and has lived with you for at least six months. Cats should show no aggression towards people or other animals. Those are obvious requirements. There are less obvious things, like cats who eat a raw protein diet not being eligible to participate. Most programs also require that the cat be able to wear a leash and harness, mostly for the cat s own safety.

You ll likely first fill out a screening questionnaire. Once the organization has established that you and your cat meet the requirements, you ll complete training for either just you (the handler) or you and your cat. When that is finished, you and your cat undergo a live evaluation by a trained expert.

Then you submit all of this information, along with a fee (which varies by organization), to become a certified therapy team. Voila!

What kind of cat makes a good therapy cat?

Obviously, not all cats make good therapy cats. According to Pet Partners, animals who are calm, confident, friendly, and OK with unpredictable or new situations do well as therapy animals.

You can probably make the call about your own cat s future as a therapy kitty. My Romeo would not make a good therapy cat. He s loving and sweet but only on his own terms. Pugsley, on the other hand, would be awesome. He s a love bug. He doesn t mind being picked up by anyone and everyone, and new situations, people, or even other animals don t even phase him. Pugsley once walked right up to two dogs who came into his house, sniffed them both, yawned, and stretched out on the floor for a snooze. My guess is that snuggling with little kids or senior citizens would be right up Pugsley s alley.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hair After Waxing

Whether you head to a salon for your wax job or you do the deed at home, ingrown hairs are a common complaint after waxing. Ingrown hairs are typically the result of hair that grows improperly when forced back into the skin, resulting in a painful red bump that can become infected. By waxing infrequently and using the right technique, you can protect yourself from the pitfalls of waxing for smoother skin and better results.

Wax your body hair infrequently, and less than every three weeks. When you wax too often, you may end up with hairs that are too short for the wax and strip to grasp, resulting in hairs that are ripped and broken. These can grow improperly and cause ingrown hairs. Make sure that your hair is at least a quarter of an inch, to give the wax enough to grab on to for a clean wax job.

Exfoliate your skin before you wax to get rid of dead skin and release trapped hairs that could be forced back into the skin while waxing, suggests “Cosmopolitan” magazine. Just lather up with a loofah in the shower, or create your own body scrub by mixing a cup of brown sugar with 3 tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tbsp. of milk. Scrub in a circular motion for 30 seconds, then rinse away and pat dry before waxing.

Pull the wax strips cleanly, without going over the same spots over and over again. Not only is it irritating to the skin, but it can cause hairs to be forced back into the skin or broken off at an awkward angle, resulting in ingrown hairs. If you’re having an esthetician complete your wax, request that each area is only gone over once.

Wear loose-fitting clothing after you wax. Tight, synthetic clothing can chafe the skin and exacerbate ingrown hairs. Opt for breathable, natural fabrics like loose cotton or linen for at least a day after your wax.

Opt for shaving if you constantly suffer from ingrown hairs after waxing. Waxing pulls hair out at an angle, making it grow into the side of the hair follicle instead of out of the skin. Your individual hair growth pattern may make you especially susceptible to ingrown hairs, and other hair removal methods may work more effectively for you.

China’s interbank money market should eventually open to all institutional investors and trade more products, including derivatives, said a top official with the Shanghai Foreign Exchange Trade System (SFETS).

“More trading products are needed in the interbank market,” said Lin Yuli, president of SFETS, at the China Money Market forum held in Shanghai on Saturday to celebrate SFETS’ 10th anniversary.

So far, the interbank market only provides spot transactions, but has no derivatives for members to hedge risks.

“In terms of the renminbi interbank market, there is a lot to do to promote qualified commercial banks to issue financial bonds as well as promote the corporate bond market and securitization of credit assets,” she added.

She also said in the long term, all institutional investors should be able to participate in the market, including non-financial institutions when everything is ripe.

Shanghai-based CFETS is a subsidiary of the People’s Bank of China. Established in 1994, CFETS provides renminbi foreign exchange transactions, renminbi interbank borrowing and lending and the bond dealing system, as well as clearing and settling services.

China’s interbank foreign exchange, funding and bond markets have witnessed rapid growth in the past decade. The accumulated amount of foreign exchange market transactions surged from US$4.08 billion in 1994 to a record high of US$151.1 billion last year. Renminbi interbank funding and the bond market have grown from 580 billion yuan (US$70.5 billion) in 1996 to 17.2 trillion yuan (US$2.1 trillion) in 2003.

It now has 347 members in the foreign exchange market and 948 in its funding and bond market.

Lin said the CFETS has played an important role in creating the mechanism for setting the reminbi exchange rate and keeping it stable.

Looking ahead, CFETS aims to become a trading and pricing centre of renminbi-related products.

To achieve the goal, Lin said trading efficiency should be further improved. CFETS will also cultivate and develop the market-maker base and perfect the trading mechanism.

How to encrypt sensitive data? Put it in an encrypted container

Abrham Sorecha asked how to password-protect a folder.

You can’t effectively password-protect a folder without encrypting it. And strictly speaking, you can’t truly encrypt a folder, because a folder is not actually a container. It just looks like one to the user. The data comprising the files inside any given folder may be strewn all over the drive’s media.

But there are alternatives. You can encrypt every file in the folder. You can put the folder into an encrypted .zip archive, or into an encrypted vault.

You can effectively encrypt a folder with Windows’ own Encrypted File System (EFS)—at least if you have something more expensive than a Home edition of Windows. You need a Pro or Ultimate edition of Windows to get EFS.

Just to clear things up, these versions of Windows have two encryption tools. EFS encrypts files and—in a sense—folders. BitLocker encrypts partitions and drives.

To encrypt a folder with EFS, select Properties, click the Advanced button, and check Encrypt contents to secure data. When you close out the Properties dialog box, keep Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files.

This will encrypt every file in this folder and its subfolders. New files created or dragged here will also get encrypted. Other people will be able to see the files and the file names, but they won’t be able to open the files. Only you—or at least, only someone logged on as you—can open these files.

EFS’s way of handling encryption makes a lot of sense in an office environment, where you can assume you’ve got an organized and knowledgeable IT department, but you can’t assume that employees understand the word encryption. When the user is logged on, the files appear to be unencrypted; otherwise, they can’t be read. But someone, probably IT, needs to know where the special, generated encryption key is kept—elsewhere in the office—in case Windows has to be reinstalled or the data transferred elsewhere.

No wonder Microsoft keeps this out of the hands of Home edition users.

Instead, I’m recommending VeraCrypt. a free, open-source fork of the gone and much-missed TrueCrypt. This version was created and is being maintained by French security consultant Mounir Idrassi.

If you’re familiar with TrueCrypt, you’ll be right at home. Its simple (if unattractive) user interface is almost identical to the earlier program’s. How to Form a Professional LLC in Colorado

As a licensed professional in Colorado you can structure your business as a Colorado professional limited liability company (PLLC). This will give you protection from several important types of liability. It also may provide certain tax advantages compared to other ways of structuring your business.

What is a Colorado PLLC?

A Colorado PLLC is a limited liability company (LLC) formed specifically by people who will provide Colorado licensed professional services. LLCs in general are businesses registered with the state that consist of one or more people called LLC members who own the business. Like other LLCs, PLLCs protect their individual members from people with claims for many (but not all) types of financial debts or personal injuries.

Note: Unlike the majority of other states, Colorado s LLC Act doesn t include provisions specifically for LLCs that will provide professional services, nor is there a separate PLLC Act. Also unlike almost every other state, Colorado s corporation laws do not specifically include provisions for professional corporations (PCs). (A few other states largely base their rules for PLLCs on pre-existing PC laws.) Instead, the legal basis for PLLCs in Colorado as well as for other forms of so-called professional service entities derives from the state s various laws regulating professions and occupations (Title 12 of the Colorado Statutes).

What is a Professional Service?

Under Colorado s laws for professions and occupations, the following professionals would be considered to provide professional services:

  • certified public accountants
  • architects
  • chiropractors
  • dentists
  • engineers
  • land surveyors
  • lawyers
  • optometrists
  • physical therapists
  • physicians and surgeons
  • podiatrists
  • professional counselors, and
  • veterinarians.

Anyone who is licensed to practice one of these professions in Colorado can form a Colorado PLLC. If you are licensed to practice another profession and want to form a PLLC, check with a local business attorney to see if the laws for that profession permit practitioners to form PLLCs.

How Do I Form a Colorado PLLC?

To form your Colorado PLLC you ll need to:

  • have the state licenses for professionals who will be a member of the company (licenses may be required for either some or all members depending on the profession)
  • check with the state licensing board for your profession to see if its prior approval is required, (and, if so, obtain the necessary documentation showing that approval), and
  • file articles of organization with the Colorado Secretary of State (SOS).

You may also need to register your PLLC with the appropriate professional regulating agency after formation.

The articles of organization must be filed electronically. You can, however, view and download a sample articles of organization form by going to the SOS website. Be aware that the statute governing your particular profession, or the regulating authority for your profession, may require that you include additional language in your articles of organization. For more information, check with the regulating agency or a local business attorney. The current filing fee is $50.

Naming Restrictions

In general, all Colorado LLCs, including PLLCs, must contain the term or abbreviation limited liability company , ltd. liability company , limited liability co. , ltd. liability co. , limited , l.l.c. , llc , or ltd. . The laws for your particular profession may impose additional restrictions on names. For additional important information on LLC names generally, check the Business Name, Location Licenses section of the Nolo website.

Service and Membership Restrictions

Service and membership restrictions on Colorado PLLCs can differ among the various professions. For example, if a PLLC provides CPA services, a majority of its members must be licensed certified public accountants in good standing in Colorado or another state. Moreover, the Colorado statute governing certified public accountants seems to state that PLLCs providing CPA services are not permitted to provide other kinds of services (with some exceptions). Check the statute for your particular profession or consult with a local business attorney for more details. Also, keep in mind that Colorado PLLCs and/or their members are subject to the regulation of the relevant state professional licensing authorities.

Operating Agreement

You should make sure you have an operating agreement for your PLLC. Unlike professional licenses, articles of organization, naming restrictions, and service restrictions, this is not a state requirement. However, it is important to have an operating agreement so that other members of the PLLC (if any), as well as outside companies and businesses (for example banks), know what the internal rules are for the company. Depending on your own level of knowledge and expertise, you should consider having a lawyer assist you in preparing this document.

A PLLC Will Not Protect You From All Liability

Forming your professional service business as a PLLC will protect you personally from:

  • creditors seeking to collect unpaid debts owed solely by the PLLC
  • liability for the malpractice of other PLLC members, and
  • people who are personally injured in connection with your PLLC because of things having nothing to do with your own professional malpractice or torts (for example, if someone slips and falls in your PLLC s offices).

Regarding protection from liability for the malpractice of fellow PLLC members, be aware that, for some professions in some states, PLLC members are required to have a minimum amount of malpractice insurance before they are eligible for such protection. Therefore, it s always a good idea to double check your state s PLLC laws, as well as your state s rules for your particular profession, regarding minimum insurance requirements.

Meanwhile, you are personally responsible if:

  • you personally guarantee repayment of a business loan
  • you engage in professional malpractice (such as completely botching a patient s treatment or egregiously mishandling a client s case), or
  • you intentionally or negligently commit a tort (such as assaulting someone).

Because you are not protected from your own malpractice, you should make sure you have professional liability insurance and, if applicable, that your coverage meets any minimum insurance requirements.

A PLLC is Different From a Professional Corporation

A PLLC is not the same thing as a professional corporation (PC). A PLLC is a newer type of business entity than a PC. Here are some of the key differences:

  • a PLLC, like other LLCs, is comprised of members, but a PC, like other corporations, is comprised of shareholders
  • following from the previous point, PLLC ownership consists of so-called membership interests in the business, but PC ownership is based on shares of stock; and
  • a PLLC, like other LLCs, is a so-called pass-through tax entity, meaning that in most states (including Colorado) only the individual members have income tax obligations, while a PC, like other corporations, usually has its own income tax obligations.

The tax differences between PLLCs and PCs can become complicated. For example, a PC can elect a special tax status (S corporation status ) that effectively makes it a pass-through tax entity like a PLLC. And, meanwhile, PCs that don t elect special status may be subject to double taxation in other words, both the PC itself and its shareholders may have to pay taxes on business income.

Colorado allows professionals to form both PLLCs and PCs, and both PLLCs and PCs provide liability protection for, respectively, their members or shareholders. Because the protection is essentially the same for both PLLCs and PCs, but PLLCs are simpler to create and operate, many professionals prefer the PLLC structure.

T-SQL Programming Part 5 – Using the CASE Function

Have you ever wanted to replace a column value with a different value based on the original column value? Learn how, with the T-SQL CASE function.

The CASE function is a very useful T-SQL function. With this function you can replace a column value with a different value based on the original column value. An example of where this function might come in handy is where you have a table that contains a column named SexCode, where 0 stands for female, 1 for male, etc. and you want to return the value “female” when the column value is 0, or “male” when the column value is 1, etc. This article will discuss using the CASE function in a T-SQL SELECT statement.

The CASE function allows you to evaluate a column value on a row against multiple criteria, where each criterion might return a different value. The first criterion that evaluates to true will be the value returned by the CASE function. Microsoft SQL Server Books Online documents two different formats for the CASE function. The “Simple Format” looks like this:

And the “Searched Format” looks like this:

Where the “input_expression” is any valid Microsoft SQL Server expression, the “when_expression” is the value in which the input_expression is compared, the “result_expression ” is the value that will be return for the CASE statement if the “when_expression” evaluates to true, ” . n ” represents that multiple WHEN conditions can exist, the “else_result_expression ” is the value that will be returned if no “when_expression” evaluates to true and in the “Searched Format” the “Boolean_expression” is any Boolean express that when it evaluates to true will return the “result_expression”. Let me go through a couple of examples of each format to help you better understand how to use the CASE function in a SELECT statement.

For the first example let me show you how you would use the CASE function to display a description, instead of a column value that contains a code. I am going to use my earlier example that I described at the top of this article where I discussed displaying “female” or “male” instead of the SexCode. Here is my example T-SQL Code:

Here is the output from this T-SQL code:

This example shows the syntax in action for a CASE function using the “Simple Format”. As you can see the CASE function evaluates the PatientSexCode to determine if it is a 0, 1, or 2. If it is a 0, then “female” is displayed in the output for the “Patient Sex” column. If the PatientSexCode is 1, then “male” is display, or if PatientSexCode is 2 then “unknown” is displayed. Now if the PatientSexCode is anything other than a 0, 1 or 2 then the “ELSE” condition of the CASE function will be used and “Invalid PatientSexCode” will be displayed for the “Patient Sex” column.

Now the same logic could be written using a “Searched Format” for the CASE function. Here is what the SELECT statement would look like for the “Searched Format”:

Note the slight differences between the “Simple” and “Searched” formats. In the “Simple” format I specified the column name for which row values will be compared against the “when_expressions” ,where as in the “Searched” format each WHEN condition contains a Boolean expression that compares the PatientSexCode column against a code value.

Now the CASE function can be considerably more complex than the basic examples I have shown. Suppose you want to display a value that is based on two different columns values in a row. Here is an example that determines if a Product in the Northwind database is of type Tins or Bottles, and is not a discontinued item.

The output for the above command on my server displays the following:

As you can see I’m using a “Searched Format” for this CASE function call. Also, each WHEN clause contains two different conditions. One condition to determine the type (tins, or bottles) and another condition to determine if the product has been discontinued. If the QuantityPerUnit contains the string “Tins” and the Discontinue column value is 0 then the “Type of Availability” is set to “Tins”. If the QuantityPerUnit contains the string “Bottles” and the Discontinue column value is 0 then the “Type of Availability” is set to “Bottles”. For all other conditions, the “Type or Availability” is set to “Not Tins , Not Bottles , or is Discontinued.

The WHEN clauses in the CASE function are evaluated in order. The first WHEN clause that evaluates to “True” determines the value that is returned from the CASE function. Basically, multiple WHEN clauses evaluate to “True”, only the THEN value for the first WHEN clause that evaluates to “True” is used as the return value for the CASE function. Here is an example where multiple WHEN clauses are “True.”

The output on my machine for this query looks like this:

If you look at the raw titles table data in the pubs database for the title “You Can Combat Computer Stress!” you will note that the price for this book is $2.99. This price makes both the “price 12.00” and “price 3.00” conditions “True”. Since the conditions are evaluated one at a time, and the “price 12.00” is evaluated prior to the “price 3.00,” the “Price Category” for the title “You Can Combat Computer Stress!” is set to “Cheap”.

The CASE function can appear in different places within the SELECT statement, it does not have to only be in the selection list within the SELECT statement. Here is an example where the CASE function is used in the WHERE clause.

The output for this query looks like this:

Here I only wanted to display books from the titles table in pubs database if the price category is ‘Average’. By placing my CASE function in the WHERE clause I was able to accomplish this.

Conclusion

As you can see the CASE function is an extremely valuable function. It allows you to take a data column and represent it differently depending on one or more conditions identified in the CASE function call. I hope that the next time you need to display or use different values for specific column data you will review the CASE function to see if it might meet your needs.

Forex trading can be fun if you can master the skill of risk management. In my opinion, the most important thing in any trade is risk management. If you risk 30 pips per trade and make 100 pips on average, even if you have a 50% winrate you will be making 350 pips in 10 trades ( 50% winrate means in 10 trades you win 5 trades and you lose 5 trades on average. Winning 5 trades means making 500 pips and losing 5 trades means you lose 150 pips so you make a total of 350 pips).

There is a no 100% winning trade setup. Every trade setup has a probability of failure. When you enter into a trade, you are taking the risk. With a small risk you ensure that if the trade setup fails you will not lose much. The trick lies in entering small and testing the waters. When the trade moves in your favor and you become pretty sure that you have caught a good move, you should open more positions. This will ensure that you multiply your profits manifolds. The important question is how we do it. I use candlesticks a lot in my trading. H4 candle and H1 candle are very important and they can give you very important clues where the price is going and where you should place the stop loss. I don’t bother about M5, M15 but use M30 candles as well as H1 and H4 candles in making my entry and exit decisions. I only open a trade at the close of M30, H1 or H4 candle.
All indicators are lagging and unreliable. The most reliable indicator as said above is price action. In the screenshots you will see Stochastic and MACD oscillator. I use them only 30% of the time while the use candlesticks 70% of the time. Moving averages work as strong support and resistance levels. I use moving averages as support and resistance levels.

Get Into Med School and Get Undergrad for Free!

It’s not that Raam Venkatesh didn’t have one heck of a fun time filling out applications to a dozen colleges, from New York University to UCLA. It’s just that, all things being equal, he would be perfectly content not to have a similar experience in three years, when he and other current high-school seniors who have their hearts set on becoming physicians will be applying to medical schools. Venkatesh, who graduated from Lakeside High School in Augusta, Ga. in June 2009, has known since he was a kid that he wanted to be a doctor (he’s thinking cardiology), but that doesn’t mean he wants his choices about what to study as an undergraduate to be dictated by what medical-school admissions offices expect. So the offer from the University of Alabama at Birmingham was one he couldn’t refuse. If he kept up his grades and got decent scores on the MCAT, the med-school admissions test, UAB would guarantee him a place in its well-regarded med school—no application required. “I was really attracted to the program,” says Venkatesh, pausing. “But the guarantee was important.”

And did I mention that tuition for the UAB program that feeds students into its med school is free? “That you can have a place reserved for you in medical school, and go to college free, is beyond the imagination of many parents,” says bioethicist Greg Pence of UAB, director of the school’s Early Medical School Acceptance Program. “People ask, ‘Why is the best student in Edison, N.J. going to college in Alabama?’ EMSAP is why.”

The Association of American Medical Colleges lists 43 bachelor’s-M.D. programs starting with admission in 2010. They vary in detail, with some offering a curriculum that lets students graduate with both degrees in six years (University of Missouri–Kansas City) or seven (Northwestern and 16 others). But in most, students complete their undergraduate work in the standard four years and then matriculate at the med school associated with that college, including the University of Southern California, Brown, and Rutgers. The programs have been growing in popularity, says the AAMC’s Gwen Garrison, with 145 students graduating with the two degrees in 2005 and 282 in 2008.

But acceptance into an undergrad–M.D. program has a cost, literally: the appeal of guaranteed admission to medical school means the undergrad part of the deal generally comes at full price. “Med school is such powerful bait, you don’t have to offer scholarships or much financial aid,” says Pence. UAB has, of necessity, adopted a different philosophy. “If you’re a bright student in L.A. thinking of Harvard and MIT, you’re not thinking of college in Birmingham,” says Pence. “Some people arrive here expecting the Klan to meet them at the airport. We have to sweeten the pot.”

Admission to the UAB program is based on board scores (it’s looking for a 34 on the ACT or a 1520 on the math-verbal SAT), an interview at the med school, a solid record of AP courses in math and science, and a strong high-school transcript with a GPA of at least 3.5. It was only in 2007 that UAB began to recruit out-of-state students; in 2009 it accepted 12 students from California, Texas, Missouri, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Michigan, as well as Alabama. All qualify for scholarships that cover tuition and, in some cases, books and housing.

The UAB program includes standard premed fare, with about 10 required courses in organic chemistry, biology, physics, math, statistics, and other premed classics. There are also required seminars in subjects such as bioethics. But the guarantee of admission to med school means students can choose courses, and even majors, that in regular undergrad programs might hurt their chances with the med-school admissions office. UAB’s EMSAP students can major in music, Spanish, or anything else as long as they fit in the premed requirements. Jason Lott, who was a freshman in the UAB program in 1998, earned a B.S. in math and a B.A. in philosophy. “I was able to take a lot of classes in a lot of different fields” because he didn’t have to sweat med-school admissions, says Lott, who hails from Anniston, Ala. Nor did an untraditional (for a premed) major hurt him in med school.

The freedom to reject a traditional premed major is a big enticement to this year’s freshmen, too. “So many students who want to go to medical school focus on being a premed, but I hope to have an opportunity to focus on other things, such as business and ethnic studies,” says Allen Young, who graduated from high school in Madison, Wis. in 2009 and is starting the UAB program. “This program lets you keep your options open.” That accounts for a lot of its appeal. Michelle Chang, who graduated from high school in Edison, N.J. knows she wants to be a doctor (she job-shadowed a pediatrician during high school) but is not so sure about the traditional premed grind. She is interested in bioethics and arts, especially painting, and expects to pursue those and many other subjects outside the list that med schools look for. For her, the guaranteed admission to med school means her undergrad years will be much less pressured than otherwise. “I didn’t want to do the Ivy path and the traditional premed because I’d be with hundreds of other students who’d be competing to go to med school,” she says.

That doesn’t mean students can coast. Although all the programs, including UAB’s, toss around the word “guarantee” when they describe the path to med school, that comes with an asterisk. Students have to maintain a certain GPA, for one thing: at UAB it is 3.6, and if you fall below that you’re on probation and have one year to bring it up. If you don’t, or fall below that level again, you’re out of the program (the average GPA for students admitted to the med school through normal channels to the University of Alabama is 3.85). These days, about 15 percent of students flunk out of UAB’s EMSAP, and half are on academic probation during one of their four undergrad years. But the program’s rigor, record, and reputation have skyrocketed. Pence, who became director of the program a decade ago, also made the MCAT mandatory. Now EMSAP students have to get a 28 to continue on to Alabama’s med school; other med schools have their own minimum. Pence also encourages students to apply to other top medical schools. Although that means that competitors “cherry-pick the best EMSAP students,” UAB makes it up at the front end, attracting a caliber of student who might not otherwise consider college in Alabama.

One such student was Lott, who was the first person in his family to attend college. He applied to several medical schools during his undergraduate years at UAB and eventually chose the University of Pennsylvania. “I was more than adequately prepared for med school,” he says, something he credits to “the analytical training I got, and learning how to handle large amounts of material.”

Other graduates are now fellows or residents at teaching hospitals affiliated with, among other med schools, Harvard, Penn, Yale, Duke, and Baylor, as well as UAB. Joyce Hsu, for instance, went from the UAB program to Vanderbilt medical school and is now doing a residency at Children’s Hospital in Boston, one of the Harvard teaching hospitals. Suzanne McCluskey, a 2009 grad, continued on to the University of Alabama School of Medicine. “The security of having a spot reserved for me in medical school takes so much pressure off the undergraduate experience,” she says. “I felt I could do everything I wanted, from research to a year abroad [in South America] to courses in human rights—THINGS that are really hard to do with a traditional premed program.”

How Much Does a Mound Septic System Cost?

If you need to construct a mounded septic system rather than a conventional system to handle waste water and sewage on your property, be prepared to pay quite a bit. A mounded system costs a lot more than a conventional septic system, due to environmental constraints. As the name implies, the mound system leaves a large hill-like structure on the site, which can’t be camouflaged with landscaping on or around it because the roots can interfere with the system.

Mounded Systems

Mounded septic systems are installed on sites with marginal soils or other site limitations, where traditional septic systems would not work. One reason for the higher cost is that a mounded system requires more sophisticated construction than a conventional system, including electric pumps.

Installation Costs

According to the Ohio State University Extension Service, a mound system costs approximately twice the amount of the same-sized conventional septic system, because of the amount of labor involved and cost of the sand. The higher cost is necessary, however, if the site or soil condition makes it impossible to use a subsurface soil absorption system, according to the OSUES. Although installation costs vary depending on septic size and location, a mounded septic can run between $30,000 to $50,000 to construct. The actual mounds consist of large amounts of gravel and sand, brought to the site. The electric pumps require regular replacement, and you must purchase a generator to keep the system operating during a power failure. In addition, mounded systems fail more frequently than conventional septic systems.

Annual Costs

Depending on the type of soil in your area, mounded septic systems can last many years, although not usually as long as traditional systems. According to the University of Minnesota, typical yearly costs for a mounded septic system might run as much as $500 as of the time of publication, including the costs of replacing pumps in these systems. A mounded system should be pumped out more often than conventional septics, depending on the number of people occupying the house or type of use in a commercial property. While annual pumping may not be necessary, the mounded system should be pumped at least biannually.

Other Considerations

Once the mound system is installed, proper care can increase the life of the system, saving you money in the long term. Don’t park vehicles or leave any heavy objects on top of the mound, and don’t pave over it. Use water wisely: Don’t take overly long showers, and limit full wash loads to once a day. Install low-flow toilets and other water-saving devices. Plant grass or other vegetation over the mound to prevent soil erosion.

    I have no personal experience but one of my friend had visited there for his hair loss problem.

    He started his treatment at Dr. Batra s 5 months ago and he had consultation with actual doctor only once(when he went there for the first time). During rest of the 3 meetings, receptionist gave him medicines and told that Dr. Dinesh had just left.

    He was told that Dr. Dinesh would be handling his case but he was very least interested in giving advice consultation or even seeing his patients

    Indeed there are no metastudies that substantiate homeopathy effectiveness. Better guess is ,it works a lot like placebo. There are evidences of heavy metal toxicities. and steroid induced side effect with long term homeopathy patrons. But there s no concrete proof of this. Also not everybody gets the side effects. Speculations are it depends on race, heredity and what not. There have been several studies made on ill effects of finasteride which confirms ED and libido but there s no rock solid proof yet. Also its been said these side effects are reversible after stopping medication(no proof on it yet too).

    So my friend. If you are ready to take risk, consult your family doctor and a good dermatologist and start gulping finasteride. But if you consider these side effects to be not worth it reach out any homeopathy(Batra) or herbal medication for MPB. These will not stop your hair fall but will definitely control it to good extent.

    Mortgage Tax Credit

    The Ohio Housing Finance Agency’s (OHFA) Mortgage Tax Credit provides homebuyers with a direct federal tax credit on a portion of the mortgage interest, lowering the tax liability by up to 40%. The tax credit cannot be larger than the owner’s annual federal income tax liability, after deductions, exemptions and other credits.

    Homebuyers must have a tax liability in order to use this non-refundable credit.

    The size of the tax credit a homeowner receives is based on the location, property and type of mortgage:

    • If you use the tax credit with a loan through OHFA’s First-Time Homebuyer program, you receive a tax credit of 40 percent of the home mortgage interest. The maximum annual tax credit is $2,000. The mortgage credit is in addition to the IRS home mortgage interest deduction.
    • If you use the tax credit with a different mortgage option from your lender, your credit percentage is 30 percent for the purchase of a bank owned property, 25 percent for a property located in a target area and 20 percent for all other properties.

    Homebuyers coupling a mortgage tax credit with a loan through OHFA’s First-Time Homebuyer program can also receive down payment assistance equal to 2.5% or 5% of the home’s purchase price.

    Am I Eligible?

    You may qualify for an OHFA First-Time Homebuyer loan if the following applies:

    • You have not owned or had an ownership interest in your primary residence in the last three years.
    • You meet income and purchase price limits.

    I just bought this universal remote control and I can’t get it to program into my Overhead Door garage door opener. What am I doing wrong?

    This is a common question that we hear from our customers.

    Very often the customer is not doing anything wrong. Except for the fact that universal remote controls available at the big box stores are not compatible with the older model Overhead Door garage door openers.

    Many universal remote controls advertise that they can be programmed into Overhead Door brand garage door openers. This statement is true for the newer style “rolling code” (i.e. Code Dodger) Overhead Door garage door openers. It is not true for the older model openers manufactured prior to 1995.

    Overhead Door garage door openers such as the model #456, 551, 556, and 1000A utilize a unique radio frequency technology that is not compatible with the universal remote controls available at the big box stores.

    So what do you do?

    Are remote controls still available for these older model Overhead Door garage door openers?

    The good news is YES.

    Replacement remote controls are still available for the older model Overhead Door garage door openers. However, you will need to determine the radio frequency of the garage door opener.

    The frequency code can be found the on the back side of an existing remote control. You will be looking for a code similar to 360, 380 or 390.

    If you can not locate the frequency on an existing remote control, you can still find this information inside the motor head up in the ceiling. Remove the motor cover and locate the circuit board. You should see a white sticker with the frequency code located near the antenna wire.

    Once you know the radio frequency you can order a replacement remote control that is compatible with your model garage door opener.
