Medical Assistant

If you want to be at the heart of healthcare, consider a Medical Assistant Specialized Associate Degree.

Medical Assistants are in high demand because they offer a healthy mix of clinical and administrative skill under the direction of a physician. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by the physician. Administrative functions may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes.

As part of this program, students will take courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy Physiology, Phlebotomy, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Medical Law Ethics, Medical Billing and Coding. In addition, they will take three clinical courses which include learning and practicing a variety of hands on skills used to assist the physician.

Graduates of this program will be awarded a specialized associate degree.
Laurel Technical Institute has established a Program Advisory Committee to provide relevant information from local business representatives to the school so that the curriculum is consistent with current job market trends and employer needs.

After graduation, you’ll be prepared to take tests for CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) and phlebotomy certifications — both of which improve your skill set as well as your career opportunities.

This program offers a 300 hour internship experience. To build a bridge from school to work, Career Services coordinates and implements internships, an integral part of each program that provides students with invaluable work experience in their fields. During internships, students apply skills learned in school to employment settings, and, importantly, they begin to cultivate professional networks and acquire references as they start their careers.
