‘How to choose a financial planner’

Working with Tim Claire provides us with a great deal of comfort and peace of mind and we’re happy to recommend them to our family and friends.

When I saw Claire Mackay interviewed on the ABC 7.30 program one night, I felt that she was someone I could work with.

I also like Claire s ethics and the way Quantum Financial charge their clients.

I definitely rate Claire as a person, her services and her willingness to support and listen to me, whether it is finance related or not, at a 10 out of 10.

On a professional level, Claire’s got a great deal of credentials. She’s an accountant, a financial planner and has a law degree too.

They are here for us, willing and ready to listen and help.

They’re not the cheapest financial planners by any means, but I’m happy to pay a fee that is fair and transparent.

Above all, they provide me with sound financial advice, are very professional, knowledgeable and good communicators.

My wife Sue stumbled upon you from a report by Alan Kohler who mentioned this young pair who were out to reform the financial world.

Level of communication and transparency is nothing short of outstanding.

    Bachelors Degree Program in Sonography

A Sonography Bachelor s Degree program is generally open to those who have already completed an associates degree or certificate program and who are currently certified as a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer through ARDMS or a similar professional association.

Career advancement: It’s something most of us strive for as we seek a higher level of stability, challenge, fulfillment and salary. Completing a Bachelors Degree Program in Sonography enables just that – a move up the professional ladder from sonographer to director of an ultrasound department, consultant, an educator of diagnostic medical sonography or other prestigious positions.

If you are thinking of going to medical school down the road, then a four year degree in ultrasound would also be an ideal educational foundation. (Note: Admission requirements vary from school to school. For example completion of any two-year allied health program may suffice or in some cases you can start your Bachelor of Science from scratch, rather than transferring credits from a previous associates/certificate program).

Advanced Placement Bachelors Programs in Ultrasound

An Advanced Placement Bachelor’s of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is an educational option that allows you to further specialize as a Sonographer or ultrasound technician. In many cases, fulfilling a Bachelors Degree in Sonography involves transferring your credits from a two-year Associates or certificate program plus completing professional credits specific to the profession of sonography. Such a degree is referred to as a “bachelor’s completion program”.

While pre-requisites for admissions into an ultrasound degree school vary, generally to be accepted into a Bachelors program, you must have already completed a two-year allied health program in areas such as sonography, radiation therapy or nuclear medicine technology and be a practicing Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Again, not all four year degree in ultrasound programs require this; some schools allow you to complete pre-professional courses at the beginning of your undergraduate degree. But for an Advanced Placement Bachelors Degree in Ultrasound, the emphasis is on professional development for existing sonographers and ultrasound technicians.

Coursework delves into biology, physics, lab equipment, medical terminology and patient interaction specially tailored to the field of ultrasound. Many Bachelor’s Degrees in Ultrasound programs offer students the opportunity to specialize in a particular area of diagnostic medical sonography. such as vascular, echocardiography or general (abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology). Usually an Ultrasound Bachelors degree will include clinical or internship experiences, but for an Advanced Placement program this may not be required due to previous work experience.

    FAQs

Should I pursue an Associates or a Bachelors degree in ultrasound?

If you would like to remain as an entry-level sonographer, then an ultrasound associates degree will suffice. If you wish to continuously engage in professional development and further specialize then you may wish to pursue a Bachelors degree in Ultrasound. Also if you plan to go on to medical school, then a bachelor s degree is a credible, pre-med option.

What jobs will I qualify for with a Bachelors degree?

An Ultrasound Bachelors degree coupled with several years work experience can lead to significant career advancements. The ARDMS describes this professional progression: “A sonographer with 3-5 years of experience can become lead sonographer or director of an ultrasound department. There are also opportunities in consulting, sales, equipment manufacturing, imaging administration and education”. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for diagnostic medical sonographers will continue to grow by 46% through to 2022. This job growth, which is faster than average, also equates to more high-level positions within the ultrasound field.

Can I pursue a Bachelors degree in Ultrasound while working?

Yes in many cases you can. If you are already a registered sonographer, some schools offer bachelor completion courses completely online since you would already have the clinical and lab experience from your vocation and prior education. Other schools offer flexible course schedules during the evenings and weekends.

Will a Bachelors degree make me more competitive in the job market or affect my salary?

Yes. Completing a program that equates to a four year degree in ultrasound will make you more specialized, qualified and more competitive for both entry-level and advanced sonographer positions. In 2015, the median salary for diagnostic medical sonographers was $68,970 per year, according to the BLS. However, the top 10% of sonographers made more than $97,000 annually. By upgrading your education, experience and job title, you can strive to become a part of this top 10%.

Finding out you have advanced cancer

When cancer is advanced it means that it can’t be cured and is likely to cause death within a limited period of time. The amount of time is difficult to predict but it could be weeks to several months. Doctors might also say that the illness is terminal. This distressing news can affect you and the people close to you in different ways. This page is about how you may feel and what can help you cope. There is information about

    Your first reactions

There is no right or wrong way to react when you are told your cancer is too advanced to cure. Everyone responds in their own way. For most of us of course, this is very shocking news. Even if you thought it may happen, hearing it from your doctor can still be very upsetting.

Some people become silent. They can’t believe what they are hearing and don’t know what to say or do. Some start to cry and feel as though they won’t be able to stop. Others may become very angry and scared. Some people feel numb and as though they have no emotions. These are all very common reactions.

You might find that many questions come into your mind, such as

    • Why me?
    • Do I deserve this?
    • Why can’t you find a treatment to help me?
    • There must be something that will stop this cancer – can’t you just try anything?

It is natural to feel desperate, upset, angry, or that you don’t believe the news. Be sure to give yourself the time and space to take in what is happening. You might want to be on your own. Or you may need to spend time with your partner, family or friends to help you deal with the news. Of course they may also be very upset and feel that they don’t know what to say. Even if all you can do at first is get upset together, that can be a huge help.

If you don’t feel like talking straight away, you don’t have to. Just let the people around you know that. As hard as it can be, try not to push your emotions aside completely. If you can manage it, it is better to express how you feel and allow your emotions to come to the surface – even if that is uncomfortable and hard to cope with.

    Feelings you may have

Over the first few days, you may go through a range of very strong emotions. The emotions may change very quickly and sometimes you might feel numb or as though everything is happening to someone else. Some people say they feel very calm and detached when they are first told they don’t have long to live.

At times, you will probably feel shock, anger, and sadness. These emotions can feel overwhelming at times. This news will mean that you can’t plan your future in the way you had hoped. Dying may mean leaving behind a partner, children, and other important people in your life. You may wonder how they will cope and won’t want to see them upset.

These thoughts may be too painful to cope with at times. You might be unable to stop crying and worrying. All this is perfectly normal and understandable.

You may find it difficult to look around and see life going on as normal for most people. It can feel very strange to watch people going about their daily lives as usual – shopping, driving and working. Coping with this roller coaster of feelings can be very exhausting. You may feel as if you are stuck under a huge black cloud and that there is no point in doing anything.

Most people will have some or all of these emotions. This usually changes gradually. Many people say that the intensity and distress lessens in time. This doesn’t mean that you stop worrying or feeling upset. But the feelings get more bearable. You will most likely be able to think about your situation a little more calmly and plan what you want to do.

    Looking at your options

It can be helpful to find out what support is available. Some people want to make plans about what they would like to do before they die. You may like to ask your doctor about

    • How to control cancer symptoms
    • What is likely to happen
    • Who to talk to about your concerns

Having some idea about what to expect can help you feel less anxious. You might also want to think about where you want to be at the end of your life.

    Sharing your feelings

Sharing your fears and sadness with people you love and trust may be a great relief for you.

Many people say that talking about their feelings helps them to cope. It also helps your friends and family to understand more about your situation. In turn, this will help them to help and support you. Other people find sharing their thoughts and emotions too difficult, and would rather keep things to themselves. It is important to do whatever feels best for you.

Don’t let other people pressure you into talking if you don’t feel ready. This is a very personal, emotional time. You can choose how you handle things. If you would like to talk, make sure you choose people you can talk to easily, who will understand how you feel and be able to support you.

If, after some time, you still feel overwhelmed and that you can’t cope, try speaking to someone outside your immediate family and friends.

Our advanced cancer organisations section lists counselling organisations that offer this kind of support. They also have information about coping with grief, terminal illness, and dying with cancer.

    If you are by yourself

If you don’t have people nearby to help with practical things, you can ask for help. One of your health care team may be able to arrange volunteers to help out at home, or come to visit you in hospital. Ask your specialist cancer nurse or doctor about this.

If you need help with personal care, such as washing or dressing, social services may be able to help. They can arrange a care package for you.

You might be wary of letting people you don’t know into your life. But most people find that they do need support at some stage from other people or organisations. And the people that you are put in touch with will be understanding and aware of your feelings and need for personal space. They will want to support you in the best possible way they can.

You might find help and support at your religious organisation or through other organisations you are involved with.

    Staying hopeful

It is important that people nearing the end of their life, and those close to them, are aware of what is likely to happen. But only if they want to know this. Everyone needs to have some sense of hope for their future. When you are dying, this hope may be that you can visit a place that you love. Or you may hope that you can enjoy being with your family and friends for a time. Some people believe that there is life after death and find that this gives them hope.

It may help you to share your hopes with other people, so they can help you fulfil them. Many people hope for comfort, dignity, friendship and love to surround them in their final days.

    Maintaining your certification

You should be very proud that you’ve passed the certification test! In order to keep your certification, you need to earn points for certification renewal by completing Continuing Education, Continuing Medical Education, Academic Education credits, or have work published in publications or give presentations. Follow this step-by-step guide to maintain your certification.

    1. Determine where to log your information.
If you passed a test in 2012 or later, use your Learning Plan on LearningBuilder. If you renewed via ONC-PRO in 2012 to 2015, you must first take an assessment to determine how many points you’ll need. After you assess, you will be notified that your Learning Plan is available for tracking your points.

    2. Plan your professional development.
Your assessment results or test score report will tell you the subject areas and number of professional development points – ranging from 25 to 100 – you’ll need to renew your certification.

    3. Select the necessary subjects.
Use your score report or assessment results to see which subject areas you need further professional development. Then, refer back to the current Test Content Outline (Test Blueprint) to help you identify whether a program is in the subject area you need.

    4. Enter your points on your Learning Plan on LearningBuilder.
Make sure you keep track of all of your information, as you earn the points, in your Learning Plan on the new online tracking tool called LearningBuilder.

    5. Keep all documentation.
We strongly urge you to record your points as they are earned. Keep copies of all grade reports, copies of publications, program descriptions, educational objectives, and outlines, in case ONCC asks to review them.

Visit the Resource Center for the following information:

    • Acceptable Approval Bodies/Providers of Nursing Continuing Education

    Advanced Certification:
    Hospice Palliative Chaplain Certification

About Advanced Certification of Hospice Palliative Chaplaincy (ACHPC)

Palliative Medicine is a discipline that cultivates in each practitioner (nurse, physician, chaplain, social worker etc.) a servant’s heart and a sage’s mind. One’s effectiveness in this specialty can never be adequately assessed within a set of competencies and/or prescribed guidelines but rather in the human crucible of an integrated, interdisciplinary practice that draws equally from each one’s soulfulness as well as from each one’s skill and life experiences.

This specialty certification IS NOT about acquiring greater power or prestige, or mastering a particular set of skills/competencies or securing additional letters after one’s name, or delivering a stellar performance at the time of the interview.

This certification IS a special invitation for an individual candidate to go more deeply in one’s own spiritual life and to learn the way of the wounded healer – the way of authenticity, compassion, forgiveness, and healing. This disposition of mind and heart is cultivated from the inside out and flourishes in an environment where honesty, humility, and courage are in ample supply.

This certification process invites the candidate to befriend the blessing of paradox and begin to weave a tapestry of harmony within oneself (in solitude) and with others (in community). This process builds upon the foundational belief that “the patient and I are essentially the same” and in this actual ministering of one to the other (patient, family, staff, team members etc.) blest and broken, we become sacrament for each other and a living sign of God’s healing redemptive love in our world. Facilitation of this part of the certification assessment process will invite each candidate to draw from a living palette that evokes a blend of head and heart and is reflective of the human experience – both of the candidate and of those he/she serves.

The interview team will be interdisciplinary and will be specifically assessing the candidate for indications of ones’ personal integration and ongoing formation, as demonstrated by:

    • Major loss integration
    • Self-awareness understanding
    • Human to human availability
    • Understanding of relevant concepts
    • Team collaboration, leadership and education contributions

The interview team will discern together each applicant’s desire and capability to be a leader/innovator in recognizing and fostering an Interdisciplinary Team’s (IDT) continuing development in the areas of team respect, openness to new ideas and perspectives, and compassion for all involved in the palliative care/hospice arena. At the completion of the interview, the Interview Team votes to recommend or not to recommend the Applicant to the Certification Commission for certification. It is the decision of the Certification Commission to certify or not to certify.
