About this article: The Best Motels in America
The best motels in America
The concept of the motel and its purpose hasn’t been with us for long time back in history though it has now come in to normal usage and has become extremely popular. Tracing its history, the word motel entered the vocabularies and dictionaries after World War II. The word is formed with the mixing of the two words, ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’. Initially, this establishment called a motel was referred to a type of lodging in Columbia, MD, where “a single building of connected rooms whose doors faced a parking lot and, in some circumstances, a common area; or a series of small cabins with common parking.” With the advent and the mass development of the US highway system, people became used to long distance journeys by land and through it arose the need for cheap, accessible overnight lodging facilities for these travelers along the highways, and this as a result led to the growth of the motel industry.
With the huge growth rate seen, this industry has now become fully fledged and giants of this industry have come up all over the U.S. to serve the travelers.
This is a major motel chain operating in the United States and Canada with over 900 budget type motels and it is also the largest owned and operated hotel chain in North America. It is operated by the Accor Hotels Company.
Founded in 1962 by two local building contractors, William Becker and Paul Greene, their first motel was located and still is in Santa Barbara, California. Their plan was to develop motels with rooms at bargain rates and hence they decided their room rate per night to be $6. Interestingly, this rate was supposed to cover building costs, land leases, mortgages, managers’ salaries and maid service. Further, this room rate of $6 would give the name for their motel too.
Another popular and a giant in the industry is the Super 8 Motels Inc. Regarded as the largest budget hotel chain in the world, operating motels in the U.S. and Canada, they also operate few motels in China. With regard to the ownership, they are a subsidiary of Wyndham Worldwide.
It was founded in 1972 by Dennis Brown as a motel referral system, which was soon dissolved and replaced with a franchise operation in 1973. The first Super 8 Motel was opened in 1974 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It had 60 rooms. The original room rate was $8.88, hence the numeric brand name.
Today, Super 8 Motels offer guests standard amenities at every hotel, including a new SuperStart continental breakfast, free high-speed internet access, and a lobby area. Some locations have pools and meeting rooms. A few of the larger Super 8 “Lodges” even have a restaurant on the property. However, it still remains the lowest-priced offering in the Wyndham Worldwide family. (www.wikipedia.com)
Econo Lodge is another budget motel chain in the United States where it is the second largest brand in the Choice Hotels system. As a more popular brand of the industry, this motel chain provides its customers with affordable rooms. Most of these properties contain at least 40 guest rooms and quire often located near highways. While most of the properties are conversions, Choice Hotels plans to add more new-construction properties to the Econo Lodge brand. As of August 2006, there are 823 Econo Lodge hotels open in the United States and 46 under development. Internationally, there are 42 hotels open and 4 under development. (www.wikipedia.com)
