About this article: The Best Motels in America

The best motels in America

The concept of the motel and its purpose hasn’t been with us for long time back in history though it has now come in to normal usage and has become extremely popular. Tracing its history, the word motel entered the vocabularies and dictionaries after World War II. The word is formed with the mixing of the two words, ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’. Initially, this establishment called a motel was referred to a type of lodging in Columbia, MD, where “a single building of connected rooms whose doors faced a parking lot and, in some circumstances, a common area; or a series of small cabins with common parking.” With the advent and the mass development of the US highway system, people became used to long distance journeys by land and through it arose the need for cheap, accessible overnight lodging facilities for these travelers along the highways, and this as a result led to the growth of the motel industry.

With the huge growth rate seen, this industry has now become fully fledged and giants of this industry have come up all over the U.S. to serve the travelers.

This is a major motel chain operating in the United States and Canada with over 900 budget type motels and it is also the largest owned and operated hotel chain in North America. It is operated by the Accor Hotels Company.

Founded in 1962 by two local building contractors, William Becker and Paul Greene, their first motel was located and still is in Santa Barbara, California. Their plan was to develop motels with rooms at bargain rates and hence they decided their room rate per night to be $6. Interestingly, this rate was supposed to cover building costs, land leases, mortgages, managers’ salaries and maid service. Further, this room rate of $6 would give the name for their motel too.

Another popular and a giant in the industry is the Super 8 Motels Inc. Regarded as the largest budget hotel chain in the world, operating motels in the U.S. and Canada, they also operate few motels in China. With regard to the ownership, they are a subsidiary of Wyndham Worldwide.

It was founded in 1972 by Dennis Brown as a motel referral system, which was soon dissolved and replaced with a franchise operation in 1973. The first Super 8 Motel was opened in 1974 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It had 60 rooms. The original room rate was $8.88, hence the numeric brand name.

Today, Super 8 Motels offer guests standard amenities at every hotel, including a new SuperStart continental breakfast, free high-speed internet access, and a lobby area. Some locations have pools and meeting rooms. A few of the larger Super 8 “Lodges” even have a restaurant on the property. However, it still remains the lowest-priced offering in the Wyndham Worldwide family. (www.wikipedia.com)

Econo Lodge is another budget motel chain in the United States where it is the second largest brand in the Choice Hotels system. As a more popular brand of the industry, this motel chain provides its customers with affordable rooms. Most of these properties contain at least 40 guest rooms and quire often located near highways. While most of the properties are conversions, Choice Hotels plans to add more new-construction properties to the Econo Lodge brand. As of August 2006, there are 823 Econo Lodge hotels open in the United States and 46 under development. Internationally, there are 42 hotels open and 4 under development. (www.wikipedia.com)

Open Virtual Tour

In 2006 I shot our very first spherical aerial panorama. from which the AirPano project started, in the beautiful place of the Colorado and the San Juan rivers confluence (USA):

The result was overwhelming by looking at the large screen one had a total illusion of flying over the canyon. And so we decided to continue our experiments.

The next attempt was made in 2007 above the island of Manhattan. I remember this photo shoot by one funny detail: there were no headphones for passengers in the helicopter’s cabin. I had to shout from the back seat (while trying to overcome the engine roar that was coming from the open door) to let the pilot know where to go. He didn’t hear me anyway, so in order to change the shooting position I had to tap on his shoulder and then after he looked at me I had to point the direction with my finger where the thumb down meant moving lower. And guess how I showed him to go higher 🙂 It was fun.

After that incident, when hiring a helicopter I always ask: Do you have passenger headphones in the cabin?
And pilots are always surprised: But of course! Is it possible not to have them?
Yes, it is possible, I answer In New York 🙂

Despite of all the difficulties, this photo shoot was accomplished, delivering world’s first virtual photo tour above Manhattan .

There were many more flights after this one, and many like-minded people joined AirPano project in the process. As of today we shot around 100 spherical panoramas of the most interesting and beautiful places in all the continents of our planet. Except for Antarctica. We also made virtual photo tours over the world’s most beautiful cities.

In 2011 we returned to New York to once again photograph Manhattan: this time making it much better technically and artistically. Enjoy the daytime aerial panoramas of Manhattan now. The evening flight over Manhattan and the large photographic virtual tour will be published in the nearest future.

New York is the most famous city of the USA, and Manhattan is the most famous part of New York. It all started 400 years ago when the most famous and profitable in human history real estate deal was made: the Native Americans sold this ‘not so useful’ piece of land to Europeans for 24 dollars.

Since that time the island has changed dramatically. For 24 dollars one can probably buy a ticket to the Empire State Building.

Present day Manhattan is the most populated island on Earth. The land itself costs about 40 billion US dollars, and the cost of the entire Manhattan, including its real estate, reaches over 3 trillion US dollars.

This remarkable part of New York City is best to be discovered on foot not only because of the infamous New York traffic or cost of parking in New York. There is a joke in New York that only wasteful people can afford driving in New York, because the time one spends on finding a parking spot sometimes equals the time it takes to drive from one side of Manhattan to another.

New York is known to be a financial capital of the world, and the island of Manhattan is where all the banks, offices, largest insurance companies and corporations are located literally one on top of another. Basically the rest of New York, and eventually, the rest of the United States, work for Manhattan, making sure that this gigantic city inside of the city continues its mission processing the wealth of the whole world.

Besides a large number of museums, almost every building in Manhattan has a historical value. Old buildings harmoniously coexist with the best examples of the modern architecture. Most famous New York attractions are located in Manhattan, including Empire State Building mentioned above, Central Park and Times Square. There is also colorful China Town and bright Broadway they are all located on this island. It is a shame not to bring a photo of Manhattan from your trip to New York!

We also made our modest Manhattan photo album. These panoramas were photographed in the summer of 2011.

How to successfully recover data from a failed RAID

Recovering data from a failed RAID can easily turn into a costly ordeal. Please read this page carefully before proceeding. If you would like to get help from experts, please consider using our fee-based RAID recovery service.

First determine whether the RAID is hardware-based or software-based. The recovery procedures are very different.

Recovering a hardware RAID

First determine if the problem is caused by the underlying RAID mechanism. If it is not, follow the simpler recovery procedures for an ordinary drive. The following causes of problem are not related to the RAID:

  • Virus attacks.
  • The volume being deleted, resized, reformatted or otherwise changed in Disk Manager or other disk management utilities.

If the problem seems to be in the RAID mechanism, determine the operating state of the RAID and take the appropriate actions.

Avoid the most common mistakes that may cause data to become unrecoverable.

Hardware RAID operating states

History of Hospice Foundation of America

Hospice Foundation, Inc. was chartered in 1982 with the purpose of providing fund raising assistance to hospices operating in South Florida so that they could carry on their mission of providing compassionate care to dying patients. This was prior to passage of the Medicare hospice benefit.

In 1990, with the help of a significant gift from Hospice Care, Inc. the Foundation expanded its scope to a national level in order to provide leadership in the entire spectrum of end-of-life issues. The Foundation board is a distinguished group of health policy experts which guide the Foundation as it explores efforts to:

  • become a center of neutral, creative thinking on end-of-life issues for policy makers and opinion molders,
  • raise the visibility and credibility of hospice in general, and
  • become an advocate for those principles of hospice which may enhance the medical system in general.

To more accurately reflect its national scope, in 1992 the Foundation opened a Washington, D.C. office for its policy and program work, and in 1994 the Board changed the name of Hospice Foundation, Inc. to Hospice Foundation of America.

America s Best Affordable Hotels

Your next hotel stay doesn’t have to break the bank, thanks to T+L’s list of the best affordable hotels.

What would the perfect hotel stay in Charleston, SC, include? How about a white-gloved doorman welcoming you into an antebellum mansion, where you can relax in period-style rooms furnished with four-poster beds? The Planters Inn in Charleston delivers this experience—and best of all, it’s not as expensive as it seems.

With its central location and overflowing southern charm, it’s no surprise that Planters Inn is a favorite of travelers. But its affordable rates have catapulted the 64-room property to No. 6 on the list of America’s Best Affordable Hotels, as voted by Travel + Leisure readers in the World’s Best Awards Survey. (Vote now in this year’s survey! ) And all the winning hotels deliver stellar service, luxurious amenities, and rates of $250 a night or less.

So where can you find the highest concentration of these affordable gems? Las Vegas, of course: five of the top 20 properties are located on the Las Vegas Strip. Stay at The Palazzo (No. 4), a smart choice for those who love to shop, as Barneys department store is located on the ground floor. Or choose Encore at Wynn (No. 16); you can enjoy the sun’s rays from an oversize lounge chair at the 60,000-square-foot beach club, or even while playing blackjack (the tables abut floor-to-ceiling windows).

It’s easy to find travel deals in Las Vegas. Sin City is still absorbing more than 6,000 hotel rooms added by the opening of CityCenter and the Cosmopolitan. This saturation of hotel options, along with higher gas prices, will keep the city’s room rates down, according to a recent report by Moody’s Investors Service. So if you’re looking to save money, head to the desert: Las Vegas will be a great value for travelers straight through the hot summer months.

For those who prefer history to hedonism, there’s The Greenbrier (No. 17), in West Virginia. This quintessential American retreat in the Allegheny Mountains was the setting of a Cold War fallout shelter for the House of Representatives and the Senate; the bunker is now open to tours. Meanwhile, Dorothy Draper interiors still draw design aficionados, and active types love the property’s adventure zone, bowling lanes, and indoor ice rink. And it’s all just $249 a night.

But what’s America’s Best Affordable Hotel? Read on for the winner.

London, United Kingdom

Just returned from three weeks at Extended stay. this is our third time at this hotel. The rooms are neat and tidy. House keeping was OK linen changed weekly, towels every few days. The thing for Brit holiday makers to know is that this is not a traditional two week holiday venue that we are used to in europe. lots of people stay just a few days and move on or some are there working in the area and may stay several weeks or are at conventions so people are always changing although you don’t notice it. It is a perfect location for I drive with lots to do in walking distance it is also close to the two different routes for the trolley ride which is good breakfast is ok and covered in the other reviews

Hospice Foundation of America is a not-for-profit organization that provides leadership in the development and application of hospice and its philosophy of care. Through programs of professional development, research, public education and information, Hospice Foundation of America assists those who cope either personally or professionally with terminal illness, death, and the process of grief.

Hospice Foundation of America Mission Statement

Hospice Foundation of America provides leadership in the development and application of hospice and its philosophy of care with the goal of enhancing the U.S. health care system and the role of hospice within it.

How does the Foundation do its work?

Hospice Foundation of America is a 501(c)(3) organization and meets its mission by conducting programs of professional development, public education and information, research, publications and health policy issues. Our programs for health care professionals assist those who cope either personally or professionally with terminal illness, death, and the process of grief, and are offered on a national or regional basis.

    Hospice Foundation of America

    Hospice Foundation of America

Our programs for the public assist individual consumers of health care who are coping with issues of caregiving, terminal illness, and grief.

For more information about the Hospice Foundation of America’s educational programs, click here .
