PCI COMPLIANCE

All merchants accepting credit cards must comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) before July 2010.

What is PCI-DSS?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) is a worldwide information security standard mandated by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council.

Who makes up the PCI Council?

The council was formed as a collaborative effort between the five major card brands: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB. By coming together, standards were created to help organizations that process card payments prevent credit card fraud through increased controls around data and its exposure to compromises. The major card brands have allowed acquirers and processors to enforce compliance through their own means.

Why should I become compliant?

You should become PCI compliant in order to make sure you are taking the proper care to ensure that cardholder data is protected. If a breach were to happen at your location, and if you are not PCI compliant at the time, the card associations may assess a fine against you and you will be liable for all the fraudulent transactions caused by the breach. However, if you are compliant, the fine may be reduced and you may not be responsible for the fraudulent transactions.

How do I become compliant?

As a merchant, you will be responsible to become PCI compliant by PCI regulations. However, as a USBSI merchant, we offer in house PCI assistance to guide you and your business in achieving PCI compliance. Merchants are often advised to complete compliance by going online or by requesting a Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Through these outlets, USBSI’s dedicated staff will provide guidance and advice to questions you have regarding PCI compliance.

If you have further questions concerning PCI compliance and its requirements, you may contact a USBSI PCI Specialist at 888-525-8558 or visit the PCI Council’s website at http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org

Online Masters Degree in American History: Program Info

    Essential Information

A small number of schools offer online master’s degree programs in American history. This may involve taking American history courses as part of a general history program. In addition to online courses, students must complete independent research. Thesis and non-thesis programs are available. Students can complete this program fully online without any on-campus visits.

A master’s degree is typically the educational level required for historians. High school history teachers are not necessarily required to hold a master’s degree, but some states require teachers to earn a master’s degree after earning teaching certification. Important prerequisites for master’s programs include a bachelor’s degree and GRE scores.

Master’s Degree in History – American History

Online master’s degree programs in history are offered by a handful of schools and typically allow students to tailor their studies to their personal interests; American history is a common concentration offered for this degree. Although subject matter will vary, most program courses cover the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, domestic and international politics and a variety of cultural developments and changes that have occurred up through the modern period.

Since teachers often pursue master’s degrees to increase their salaries, the online degree programs are often designed with history teachers in mind. However, they are also appropriate for students intending to move on to doctoral programs. Most programs require students to have a bachelor’s degree and submit GRE scores.

    Program Details and Information

In order to complete an online master’s degree program in American history, most schools require students to conduct independent research and write a master’s thesis; however, there are also non-thesis online programs available. Non-thesis programs typically require students to complete 36 credits of coursework, and many students are able to finish their degree within three years. Most programs can be completed entirely online, and schools rarely require students to attend classes on-campus.

Students interested in an online master’s degree program in American history should make sure their computers are running a current operating system and an updated Internet browser. Some schools will require students to familiarize themselves with Web-based course management software like Blackboard; this program is used to deliver online course materials to students, including recorded lectures, exams and assignments.

    Course Topics

Online master’s degree programs in American history allow students to focus on the periods and aspects of the U.S. timeline in which they have the greatest interest. Most schools also have a core curriculum of classes that all students must take.

    American Revolution

This course covers the cultural and sociological context of the Revolutionary War. Students also discuss the importance of social and cultural factors in relation to military action of all types.

    Constitutional History

In this class, students examine the origin, content and legacy of the United States Constitution. The course also covers both contemporary and historical debates over topics such as State’s rights, amendments and Due Process.

    African-American History

This course focuses on the social and cultural development of the African-American community in the United States. Students discuss the transportation of Africans to the New World, the civil rights movement and contemporary African-American issues.

    Teaching American History

This class is designed for high school and college American history instructors. It teaches students how to approach curriculum development, create assessments and craft lesson plans.

    Career Information

Graduates of online master’s degree programs in American history often pursue careers in education. Students who weren’t already professional history teachers upon enrollment will need to apply for teaching licensure in their state if they wish to teach at the K-12 level. The licensure process typically involves passing both a general teacher certification exam and a subject-specific exam in history.

Graduates who already held teacher licensure before entering the master’s degree program may continue in their history teaching careers, often with increased salary prospects. A master’s degree in history is also a beginning qualification for teaching at the college level.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, certified secondary school teachers (in all areas, not just history) earned a median annual salary of around $57,200 as of May 2015. Meanwhile, postsecondary history teachers earned a median salary of $69,400 that same year (www.bls.gov ).

    Continuing Education Information

Once a student completes an online master’s degree program in American history, he or she is eligible to move into a Ph.D. program. Many schools offer both online and on-campus Ph.D. programs in American history, allowing students to conduct independent research and work towards completing a dissertation.

Individuals who have an interest in American history and are interested in become high school or postsecondary teachers have several online options to choose from at the master’s degree level. These degrees can also be good preparation for doctoral degrees.

  • Types of Psychotherapists (Licenses) #psychology,psychotherapy,counseling,mental #health,emotional #growth #and #healing,american #psychological #association,alaska #psychological

    #

A license to practice in the mental health field indicates that the state of Alaska has verified that a practitioner has completed a professional training program, has completed a period of supervised experience, and has passed a formal examination in their specific profession. While a license is not a guarantee that the practitioner is ethical and competent, it does increase the likelihood that they are, requires continuing professional education, and provides some oversight to the professional’s practice. In Alaska a person can offer services that resemble counseling without a license, but not psychotherapy and cannot use the title Psychotherapist or Psychologist.

Listed below are the primary licenses for mental health practice. These are brief summaries of the requirements involved. The actual statutes that specify the requirements are quite complex and can be researched here.

    Doctoral Level Licenses

    Licensed Psychologist (Ph.D. Psy.D. or Ed.D.)

Psychologists complete a master’s degree then a doctoral degree in clinical, counseling, school, or industrial/organizational psychology, one year of pre-degree and one year of post-degree supervised experience, and pass a psychologists licensing examination. Psychologists’ training emphasize understanding thought, emotion, and behavior, psychotherapy, psychological testing, and research.

    Psychiatrist (M.D. or D.O.)

Psychiatrists first become licensed medical doctors. Additionally, they must complete a three-year residency program in psychiatric medicine. Psychiatrists’ training emphasizes the biological basis of thought, emotion, and behavior. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication. In recent years, psychiatrists have moved more towards working more with medication than psychotherapy, though many psychiatrists still offer psychotherapy along with medication services.

    Masters Level Licenses

    Advanced Nurse Practitioner (A.N.P.)

Advanced Nurse Practitioners complete a two-year masters degree in nursing, complete a supervised clinical and psychotherapy training internship as part of the degree program, and pass a certifying examination. Not all advanced nurse practitioners have psychiatric training. Most psychiatric advanced nurse practitioners offer both psychotherapy and medication services.

    Licensed Psychological Associate (L.P.A.)

Psychological Associates complete a two-year master’s degree in clinical or counseling psychology (M.A. or M.S.), two years of supervised post-degree experience, and pass a psychological associate’s licensing examination.

    Licensed Professional Counselor (L.P.C.)

Licensed Professional Counselors complete a two-year masters degree in counseling or clinical psychology (M.A. or M.S.), two years of supervised post-degree experience, and pass a written professional counselors examination.

    Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.)

Licensed Clinical Social Workers complete a two-year masters degree in social work (M.S.W.), two years of supervised post-degree experience, and pass a written social work examination.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (L.M.F.T.)

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists complete a two year masters degree (M.A. or M.S.) with emphasis in family therapy, approximately two years of supervised post-degree experience, and pass a marriage and family therapist examination. While their training specializes in marriage and family therapy, they may also be qualified as individual therapists, and psychotherapists with other licenses may be qualified to conduct marriage and family therapy.

Their commitment to providing clients access to quality and affordable non-medical care that allows them to live full and dignified lives, while maintaining their independence continues today as part of American In-Home Care.

He visited many seniors in nursing homes and witnessed first-hand the indignity that many elders suffered due to inadequate elder care. He formed American Home Companions to allow seniors, including his own mother, to continue to live in the comfort of their own homes with an in-home caregiver.

His mother’s experience mirrors many of our clients’. As we age, our circle of friends, places, and interests slowly diminishes, and we become dependent upon others for many activities of daily living and social interaction. That is why at Advocate Home Care services and American In-Home Care, we believe that being independent should not mean being alone.

We offer free, no obligation consultations, including an in-home personalized assessment, and present care providers for approval, with confidence that our rigorous screening process and guaranteed match philosophy will provide an exceptional experience for our clients.

This handbook is written by Blanche Chen, LCSW, Co-Founder, and Pauline Nee, RN, Advisor, of the hospice.

Death is inevitable, but for terminally ill patients actually facing it, the process is not an easy one. Most people fear of suffering and loneliness, and some people felt it is hopeless. Due to language and cultural barriers, many Chinese and Asian American terminally ill patients failed to make full use of the best resources, hospice care, which is available in the mainstream society for terminally ill patients and family members.

If you would like to financially support Heart of Hope Asian American Hospice Care with cash donation, appreciated stocks or property, life insurance, or bequest, please contact (408)986-8584. What is hospice care?
Hospice care refers to care given to a patient when medical treatment cannot offer a cure nor can it prevent further deterioration of the patient’s disease. The life expectancy of the patient may be less than six months. Under these circumstances, hospice care is given to alleviate the symptoms for the patient, and provide emotional support, spiritual and social care for both the patient and his/her family in order to improve their quality of life. Hospice Care neither hastens nor postpones death, but assists and supports the patient and family till the natural end of life. Hospice care has been practiced in the US for more than forty years and many ethnic groups have benefited from this. However, many Asians and Chinese are still quite unfamiliar with the concepts of hospice care and the resources which it offers, due to the cultural tendency to avoid the subject of death.

History of the Rialto, CA Wigwam No. 7
“California Here I Come!” Disney’s Pixar film Cars brings a new storyline for all ages by touching on the past, historic Route 66. The director has done a fantastic job of itegrating Route 66 icons into the animation, ones that you’ll find our your 66 trip! The Wigwam Motels will be one of them, shown as the Cozy Cone Motel in the animation, which is a blend of the Wigwam Motel, Blue Swallow Inn and Roy’s Cafe. The Movie is also a definite eye-opener to the current Route 66 issues that include of preservation, rehabilitation and tourism topics.

The California Wigwam Motel was built within the city limits of San Bernardino in 1949, a period when citrus groves flourished. The motel would later acquire a Rialto postal address, creating confusions as the property actually sits in San Bernardino. This Route 66 Motel is fun for all, located only minutes from Colton, Grand Terrace, Redlands, Big Bear, Highland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, and Bloomington, CA. This location would mark the final of 7 Wigwam Motels that were constructed. The motel’s village-style arrangement of nineteen 30-foot-tall tepees made from wood framing, concrete and stuco draws much admiration from all generations. Each individual wigwam is carefully equipped with all the traveler’s essentials with grounds that includes of grass area, an outdoor barbecue grill and kidney-shaped swimming pool.

The mastermind behind this retro motel was a clever man by the name of Frank Redford, who was heavily influenced by the native Indian culture. He would bring his imagination to a reality in the early 1930s explained in the following section.

A total of only seven Wigwam Motels were built throughout the nation, of which three managed to remain preserved. Two of the last three remaining rest along historic Route 66 in the states of Arizona and California, while the other rests in Redford’s home state of Kentucky. View our favorite links page to learn of the other 2 remaining Wigwam Motels.

The remodeled classic motel continues to live on going on its 59th anniversary through the support of car enthusiasts, families, foreigners, historians, preservationists, roadies, tourists, travelers and many others for generations to come. Share a piece of history with your friends and family by suprising them to a stay in a Wigwam!

    The Wigwam: Concept to Reality
The coming of the automobile broadened the concepts of recreation and leisure. Unlike travel by train – for decades the most common means of long-distance transportation used by Americans – motoring could be, itself, part of a vacation, not just the means of reaching a destination. In the early 1920s, “autocamping” became the rage, and campgrounds sprang up all over the country. By the end of the decade, however, the camps’ latrines and common showers, and the increasing patronage by itinerants brought about by the onset of the Depression, made these facilities less desirable for many motorists. The next step was the cabin or cottage camp, or the proto-motel. The tiny individual tourist cabins usually emphasized the attractions of the region; for example, mock colonial houses in New England, adobe huts in the Southwest, and the wigwam in Kentucky.

Frank Redford turned his interest in Native American history into a business in 1933 when he built a teepee-shaped building near Horse City, Kentucky, to display his collection of relics. The following year he added a group of teepee-shaped cabins to entice visitors to stay the night and named it “Wigwam Village.” Redford obtained a patent for his innovative building design in 1937, and that same year he constructed a second village in the northern outskirts of Cave City, Kentucky, near Mammoth Cave National Park. By the early 1950s, seven wigwam villages had been built in the south and southwestern United States.

The typical wigwam village consisted of individual teepee cabins placed around a larger teepee which served as an office and lobby. The 18 steel-and-concrete tepees of Cave City’s Wigwam Village No. 2 vary only in size and number of windows. At 52 feet tall and approximately 35 feet in diameter, the gift shop and office is the largest. Each of the 15 sleeping units is approximately 25 feet in diameter and has two windows. The exterior walls are painted white accented with a bright red jagged lower edge at the top of the cone, a bold zig-zag band encircling the building halfway up the wall, and a narrow zig-zag band with small triangles along the inner edge of the window openings and marks similar to exclamation points at the corners. In the narrow bathrooms created by a partition at the rear of the sleeping units, the floor is covered with red-and-white tiles and the walls and stall shower repeat the zig-zag motif. Four slender metal poles project from the top in imitation of branches of wood.

In its fanciful emulation of an Indian encampment, Wigwam Village No. 2 exemplifies a unique type of architecture created for automobile travelers along the American roadside. It is one of the most historic forerunners of a practice that has been referred to as place-product-packaging – the commercial use of architectural imagery denoting product or regional design characteristics by service-oriented establishments along the American roadside. The motel placed items in the room that patrons could take home as souvenirs. These items, including ashtrays embossed with images of teepees, served as advertisements as well. The gift shop sold t-shirts and miniature plastic teepees. In addition, teepee-shaped signs along Kentucky’s highways advertised Wigwam Village.

The golden age examples of roadside Americana began to disappear in the 1960s and 1970s as a result of the burgeoning Interstate system. Superhighways took most of the tourist traffic away from the smaller U.S. roads like Rt. 66 and Rt. 31, and the motels along these routes began to go out of business. The Wigwam Villages were no exception: Today, only three the of the original motels remain: Cave City, Kentucky; Holbrook, Arizona; and Rialto, California.

If you know a friend, family member, or neighbor that could benefit form our home care we are ready to help. We offer free, no obligation consultations, including an in-home personalized assessment, and present care providers for approval, with confidence that our rigorous screening process and guaranteed match philosophy will provide an exceptional experience for our clients.
