Amsterdam’s contemporary character owes a lot to urban liberal Dutch attitudes and tolerance, and consequently has a more open attitude to drug consumption and sex. Amsterdam is also a vibrant modern city which in addition to its fascinating history has loads of great shopping, great activities and museums. Tree-lined cobblestone streets teeming with bicycles and elegant canals make Amsterdam an incredibly romantic destination. Just wander its beautiful streets or glide through its canals by boat and you will be captivated by its charms.

Visitors to Amsterdam can choose from a myriad of top class cultural and entertainment options. Starting with the museums: the Rijksmuseum includes masterpieces by Dutch masters like Vermeer and Rembrandt to name a few, the beloved van Gogh Museum houses this home grown artist’s colourful canvases. The historical Anne Frank House offers visitors a slice of history and the NEMO interactive science museum is a fun way to spend the day. The city has many green spaces as well, such as the zoo, botanical garden and the enormous Vondelpark. the only large park in the older part of the city which is packed in the summertime. The popular former Heineken Brewery offers tours and samples for thirsty visitors of this native brew.

During the day, see the city from a native’s perspective: rent a bicycle. Visit one of the many street markets selling handicrafts and local wares or pick up a bunch of the country’s most famous export: tulips. Take a canal cruise to get a quick idea of the layout and history of Amsterdam (this option is also a good idea for those who want to see the Red Light District, but from a distance). There is no shortage of shopping in this commercial metropolis: the main shopping streets radiate out from the Central Station and include Leidseplein, Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat, Heiligeweg and Leidsestraat streets. Also, though the Netherlands may not seem a likely beach destination, Zandvoort beach – 27 minutes by train from Central Station offers a good summer getaway for locals and visitors alike. Don’t forget to try the Indonesian cuisine here in Amsterdam: this former colony has left its culinary mark on the city which should not be missed.

No matter how long your stay, Amsterdam’s Old Town can be easily visited as it is within an area of 2 square miles. Once you’ve wandered through some of the city’s 90 islands you’ll soon understand why it’s called the “Venice of the North” .

Hotels in het centrum van Amsterdam verkennen

    Amsterdam ontdekken

As the name suggests, Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter is the go-to spot for history-lovers and culture-vultures. Immerse yourself in the work of the Netherlands’ favourite son at The Van Gogh Museum, satisfy your modern tastes at The Stedelijk, or explore the entire national art collection at the Rijksmuseum. Afterwards, the vibrant nightclubs of Leidseplein are the perfect places to let off some steam after a relaxing day of galleries.

    Best Amsterdam Hotels

Dominated by waterways, cafés and culture, Amsterdam is a contradictory city specialising in laid-back vibes and high art. Amsterdam takes art seriously, and with good reason given its native son Vincent Van Gogh produced some of the greatest works of the last century, many of which can be visited in the Museum in his honour. Getting around, either on two wheels or by canal, you’ll discover the relaxed pace which draws you into relaxation mode, and that’s long before you come to a famous brown café for a beer. Rich in classical music and 17th Century architecture, but somehow firmly modern, Amsterdam is a unique haven.

Amsterdam is a city for walking, or biking around, and at the very heart of it all sits Dam Square, with the Nuewe Kirk, the Royal Palace and the Nationale Vrijheidsmonument Amsterdam overlooking this grand corner of the city. It’s not just monuments and museums, however, with plenty of restaurants, cafés and street performers all vying for attention. It’s certainly busy, but despite the crowds it’s an ideal place to unwind and engage in a spot of people watching. Centrally located, the Anne Frank House Museum is a deeply moving trip into the horrors of the last century, but while its steeped in tragedy, seeing her hiding place, concealed by a bookcase, and stepping into her world is a reminder of the triumph of the will, even amid such devastating historical circumstances. Another Amsterdam institution with a tragic edge is the Van Gogh Museum, which has the world’s largest collection of paintings by the local genius.

Many of the five-star hotels will have on-site spas and fitness centers, as well as offering business and conference facilities, whether they’re a well-known luxury chain or a one-off independent guest house.

With its mix of medieval and 17th and 18th Century buildings, the area around Dam Square and Central Station is a haven for those seeking the Golden Age in the modern era. It’s within walking distance of the restaurants of Nieuwmarkt and antiques of Waterlooplein square. Greener, and often pricier, is the Museum District to the south, where you’ll be close to the Van Gogh Museum and ideally fixed for a trip into the buzzy, studenty De Pijp neighborhood for a more offbeat night out. For a flower-laden, vintage vibe, you might consider the Canal Ring, which runs in a horseshoe shape around the center of town.

International visitors to Amsterdam will probably arrive at Schiphol Airport, around 11 miles to the southwest of the city. The airport has excellent transport links into the center, with a range of regular buses making use of the extensive bus lane system and usually taking around half an hour to take you into the heart of the city. There’s also a train station linking the airport with the city, and international rail networks. Centraal Station is connected to a wide web of European cities by rail, with Paris around 4 and a half hours away by rail. The station is as centrally located as its name suggests.
