Apps for Last-Minute Hotel Rooms

By SUSAN STELLIN OCT. 31, 2012

SMARTPHONES and tablets are giving travelers a reason to wait until the last minute to book a hotel: discounts if you reserve a room for the same day using an app.

Kayak , Priceline, Orbitz , Travelocity and Expedia all offer apps that let travelers search for available hotel rooms, often discounted 10 to 50 percent for stays that begin the day you book. The apps have different features — and flaws — but they basically use a device’s GPS to show where you can find a room near you. The information is displayed on a map or a list that you can sort by price, distance or rating.

For travelers who are stuck in a city for an extra night or just planning a last-minute getaway, this mobile booking option is quite handy. I used a few apps on my iPhone on a recent driving trip and was surprised at how helpful it was to be able to zoom in on a map and choose a hotel that was affordable and close to a highway exit. Back in New York, these apps turned up hotels available in Manhattan in September for about — and sometimes even under — $200 a night. While your stay doesn’t have to begin the same day, the best discounts tend to be for last-minute rooms.

Here are some pros and cons of the apps I’ve tried.

Expedia’s hotel app ( expedia.com/app ) will detect your location and show you nearby hotels, or you can enter the name of a city. Results can be filtered by distance, price or star rating, or you can view them on a map where you select a pin to see the hotel’s price and name. “Mobile exclusive” deals are marked with a flag indicating how much you’re saving.

RECENT DEAL Element New York Times Square, $126 with taxes (versus about $462 booking through various online agencies two weeks in advance).

PROS The app scrolls through photos of the selected property; hotel descriptions include nearby attractions, guest ratings and a list of amenities. Check-in/checkout policies and fees for things like Internet access and parking are also displayed.

CONS You can’t filter the list of hotels by neighborhood. Initial prices displayed do not include taxes.

AVAILABLE FOR iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (all with iOS 5.0 or later), Android.

With Kayak’s app ( kayak.com/mobile ), you can choose “Hotels near me — Find a deal for tonight,” or enter a destination. As with other apps that pinpoint your location, the results can include options that are nearby but not necessarily convenient (for example, New Jersey if you’re standing in Manhattan), so choosing the map view lets you zoom in on a specific area like downtown or Midtown Manhattan. Robert Birge, Kayak’s chief marketing officer, said mobile bookers can save 25 percent or more by using the app and booking at the last minute.

RECENT DEAL Park Central New York, $170 including taxes (compared with about $295 when booking through various online agencies two weeks in advance).

PROS The map view shows each hotel’s base rate in balloons above the street where it is (most competitors show pins, without prices). Once you select a hotel, Kayak displays rates available from different travel agencies, including taxes and fees, making it easy to find the lowest price. There’s also a “call hotel” link if you prefer to book by phone.

CONS Using the list view, you cannot sort the results by neighborhood and price at the same time.

AVAILABLE FOR iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile 7, Kindle Fire.

Hotel apps

I tested the Orbitz Hotels app ( orbitz.com/mobile ) with my iPhone 4, but if you have a newer iPhone (iOS 4.3 or later) or Android device, you can download a version of the app that also lets you book flights and cars. Chris Brown, an Orbitz vice president, said all the company’s apps display “mobile steals” — last-minute hotel rooms that are up to 65 percent off regular rates. A funnel icon at the bottom of the screen lets you filter the results by amenities, area (one neighborhood at a time), hotel chain and rating, and then you can sort the list from lowest to highest price.

RECENT DEAL Sheraton TriBeCa New York, $232 including taxes (versus about $404 booking through various online agencies two weeks in advance).

PROS Orbitz automatically scrolls through a set of photos of the selected property, with descriptions of amenities.

CONS You can’t see all the prices at once on the map. Instead, you have to click on each pin. Initial rates displayed do not include taxes. Before booking, you must agree to terms and conditions that cover things like “intellectual property,” but the service just vaguely mentions that “Orbitz may charge a fee for the service.”

AVAILABLE FOR iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android.

Priceline (priceline.com) recently introduced an iPhone app that features last-minute deals on flights and rental cars as well as hotels, but I tested its older app, which focuses on hotels — and is available for more devices. If you search for a hotel with either Priceline app, you’ll see “Tonight-Only Deals,” which are available starting at 11 a.m. local time in 150 cities. Brian Ek, a Priceline spokesman, said these deals are up to 40 percent off regular online rates and that Thursday night tends to have the deepest discounts. For tonight-only deals, which can actually be booked for up to four consecutive nights beginning the day you make your reservation, Priceline displays the hotel’s name (unlike its name-your-own-price blind bidding option). Priceline’s apps also feature Express Deals, which can be better bargains, but the hotel’s name is not revealed until after you book.

RECENT DEAL Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, $209, including taxes and Wi-Fi (versus about $312 booking through various online agencies two weeks in advance).

PROS Filters let you select a star level (for example, three stars and above), amenities and neighborhood, then you can sort by price.

CONS You can choose only one neighborhood at a time, so in New York, you cannot select both Midtown West and Midtown East. Initial prices displayed do not include taxes and fees.

AVAILABLE FOR iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android.

Travelocity’s app ( travelocity.com/mobile ) lets you book flights, hotels and cars with “mobile exclusive” deals on hotels; discounts range from 10 to 55 percent off regular rates, said Jason Fulmines, Travelocity’s mobile director. Another app, “Hotel Deals by Lastminute.com,” was released in September by Travelocity’s sister company, but it’s available only for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices with iOS 5.0 or later, so I just tested Travelocity’s main app.

RECENT DEAL Park South Hotel, $240 with taxes (compared with about $347 booking through various online agencies two weeks in advance).

PROS The option to select mobile exclusive deals to see which hotels are offering special same-day discounts; the list is sorted from lowest to highest price and displays each hotel’s star rating and distance from your location.

CONS On my phone, which is just over a year old, the app crashed frequently or stalled when retrieving the latest prices after I selected a hotel. When it did work, I often got a message saying, “We’re sorry. One or more rooms you have selected are no longer available.” Prices were generally higher than those I found using other apps.

AVAILABLE FOR iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows 7, Kindle Fire.

Best apps for booking last-minute hotel rooms

There are a number of mobile apps that either specialize in last-minute hotel bookings or have sections that do. (Photo: iStockphoto)

Story Highlights

  • More than half of all hotel phone bookings are made the same day

Imagine this scenario: You’re at a party and you’ve had a couple of cocktails and you don’t want to make that 45-minute journey home.

Or you’re on a road trip, and you just need a few hours of sleep before you make that final push to your destination.

Or maybe you’re on a business trip and your work is not yet done. So you’ve got to spend one more night in town and the hotel you were at is sold out.

There are all sorts of reasons that force travelers to book a hotel room at the last minute. It used to be that you’d have to pick up your phone and call several hotels to see if they had a room in your price range.

Now, there are a number of mobile apps that either specialize in last-minute hotel bookings or have sections that do.

According to market research company PhoCusWright, 18% of online sales at hotels this year — or $7.5 billion — will come from Smartphone and tablets on websites and apps. More than half of all phone bookings are made the same day.

Here are a few of the best apps:

Priceline
(Free, available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone)
Priceline is best known as a hotel bidding site. You name your price and desired star rating of the hotel, and you book the room without knowing the name of the hotel. First you choose the location and the star level, and then you enter your bid. I asked for a five-star hotel in Downtown D.C. near the White House. The median retail price for that kind of hotel, I was told, was $351. If I didn’t want to bid on a room, I could opt for an “Express Deal” instead for a similar hotel for $282 but I’d have to be comfortable with finding out the name of the hotel after booking. I decided to place a bid for $250. I got a room for a total of $296.81 with taxes and fees. But I would not find out the name of the hotel until I typed in my credit card number. If I didn’t feel comfortable with that, I could browse the day’s dozens of available hotel rooms, organized by proximity to where I was. The closest hotel to me, 0.4 miles away, was the four-star Omni Shoreham at $289. It had a guest score of 9.1 out of 10. The score, based on 132 reviews, was broken down into cleanliness, dining, staff and location. A photo gallery and list of amenities were also available.

Expedia
(Free, available on Android, iOS)
The app has a dedicated “Tonight” section. The first of dozens of options that were listed by proximity to me was the Windsor Inn, 0.7 miles away, for $129. I could sort the list of hotels by popularity, price, deals, rating and distance. Within the list, there were many rooms discounted for “tonight only.” The Embassy Row Hotel, for instance, was on sale for tonight only for $127, a 20% discount. When I sorted the hotel by distance, The Quincy hotel showed up at the top of the list as 0 miles away. The Quincy was actually not the closest hotel to my location. Neither was the Mayflower Renaissance, which also appeared as 0 miles away. But I did find the Omni Shoreham, for $269, less than its Priceline pricetag. When I clicked on the Omni Shoreham, there were icons showing me which amenities were available. I was also told that 94% of guests recommended it, and that it was based on 1,564 reviews. There was a map and detailed information about policies and fees.

Orbitz
(Free, available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry)
When I clicked on the “Nearby Available Tonight” section, dozens of choices came up. The Omni Shoreham appeared as a four-star hotel with a 4.2 out of 5 guest score and a pricetag of $289. When I clicked on it, I was actually told which room type I’d get: a Deluxe room with two double beds. I could click on “see all room types” to find out which other room types I could get for that price. What set Orbitz apart from the other apps was its elaborate guest reviews section. You can find out how the hotel fared with business travelers, couples, families, friends and singles, and how many of each gave their input. The guest score was based on room cleanliness, hotel staff, room comfort, location and value. You have the option of seeing reviews only by verified customers, and you can read them in English or Spanish. Head back to the search results, and you can sort the hotels by best bets nearby, lowest price, distance, star rating and hotel name. Narrow down your list even more by filtering the choices by amenities, areas, hotel chains, star rating and reviewer score.

Travelocity
(Free, available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone)
I clicked on the “Deals Tonight” section and got 125 results. I could sort the list by Travelocity Picks, prices, distance, ratings or alphabetical names. I could filter by searching for a particular hotel, star ratings, user ratings and amenities. The Omni Shoreham showed up as a four-star hotel with a guest score of 4.9 out of five based on 105 reviews. Pricetag: $269 for a deluxe room with a queen bed. I could browse photos and a list of amenities. If that price was too steep, I could go for a “Top Secret” hotel for up to 45% off per night. There was a four-star hotel near the US Capitol with a three out of five-star user rating for $114. I was told that hotels in the four-star category may include Hilton, Hyatt or Westin, but I wouldn’t know which one until I booked.

JetSetter
(Free, available on iOS)
Jetsetter bills itself as a community of travelers that provides expert knowledge and exclusive deals on vacations. Its mobile app has a Jetsetter Now feature, which allows you to book same-night hotel stays for up to 60% off. Jetsetter says one of its correspondents has “personally visited and reviewed every experience.” Unlike the other apps, Jetsetter only offers deals in seven cities: New York, Miami, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. I clicked on Las Vegas and was told deals would appear at 3 p.m. EDT. I could get a notification once the deals were available. Deals for New York, Miami and Boston were live, however. So I clicked on New York and got four options. One of them was a “Downtown Contemporary” hotel for $210, down from $349. There were just five rooms left in that category. When I clicked on it, it said that 92% of guests from 368 stays would recommend it to a friend. Under the Review section, there was a list called “What We Love,” which included that it is “crammed with new-wave restaurants, homegrown boutiques, speakeasy-style cocktail bars and pumping music venues.” Under “What to Know,” it said I’d be e-mailed the name of the hotel as soon as I booked it.

Hotel Tonight
(Free, available on Android, iOS)
Daily deals don’t go live until noon local time. At noon, my iPhone beeped to say that today’s deals were ready. I got 16 options in D.C. Maryland and Virginia. Kimpton’s Topaz Hotel in D.C. was on sale for $95, down from $219. Of 35 ratings, 94% gave it a thumps up. Hotel Tonight categorizes hotels as hip, luxe, solid, basic, charming or appropriate for high rollers. Click on the hotel, and you get a list of amenities, such as Wi-Fi and breakfast. There’s a “Why We Like It” section. One reason Topaz was liked is that it has a “mélange of coolly striped walls, funky patterns and vibrant shades of purple.” One drawback: You won’t get a guarantee on a specific room or bed type until check-in. But you definitely get one of the steepest discounts of any of the apps.

10 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Mobile App Developer

Free Webinar | August 16th

Find out how to optimize your website to give your customers experiences that will have the biggest ROI for your business. Register Now

If your company doesn t have a mobile app yet, you could be missing out on a golden opportunity to tap into new revenue streams. Smartphones and tablets are where today s consumers live. The majority of the 120 million smartphone owners in the U.S. use a shopping or retail app at least once a month, according to a recent Nielsen report. Yours could be one of them.

If you d like a mobile app that lets customers buy your products — or simply access products reviews, videos or coupons — you ll need to hire an experienced developer you trust to custom build it.

Here are 10 key questions to ask mobile app developers to help you choose the right one for the job:

1.Where can I find examples of mobile apps you ve developed?
Qualified candidates should be eager to provide you with a list of apps they are personally responsible for creating — or at least played a major role in developing — complete with links to each in Apple s iOS App Store, BlackBerry App World or Google Play, Google s Android app store.

That way you can begin to gauge whether or not they have the skills, experience and vision to produce the type of mobile app you re looking for, says Chad Mureta. CEO of App Empire, a San Francisco-based app development firm, and author of App Empire: Make Money, Have a Life, and Let Technology Work for You (Wiley, 2012).

2. May I have a list of your current and past clients?
Unlike reading movie credits, there s typically no way to tell who actually developed an app. This is why speaking directly with candidates current and former clients can be essential to verifying that the developers actually created the apps they claim to have worked on, Mureta says.

Checking references also gives you an opportunity to ask how reliable, responsive and results-oriented candidates are. For example, you might ask whether they delivered on deadline and within budget, and how well they work under pressure.

Candidates sometimes only offer references who have a favorable opinion of them, says Farhan Thawar, vice president of engineering at Xtreme Labs. an Ontario, Canada-based mobile strategy and product development firm. He suggests visiting a candidate s LinkedIn profile to see if you have any professional colleagues or former co-workers in common. If you do, contact your mutual connections and ask them about their impression of the candidate s experience, capabilities and work ethic.

3. What kind of smartphone do you use?
This question can provide insight into how passionate and knowledgeable a candidate is about specific mobile platforms, Thawar says. If you re telling me that you can build an app for an iPhone, then you should have an iPhone, you should be playing with the apps that you are building and also playing with other people s apps on a very regular basis. The same goes for Android and BlackBerry.

4. How can my app make money?
If your primary goal is to generate revenue with your app, the developer needs to know exactly how to build in features that will allow you to make money. You could opt for a pay-per-download revenue model, charging, say, between 99 cents and $4.99, depending on how many features your app offers.

If you opt for a free app, be sure the candidate is well versed in how to integrate mobile display ads, in-app purchases or paid subscription services.

5. How will we communicate during the development process?
The quality of your app often depends on how clearly and often you communicate your app design and functionality requirements throughout the development process.

Does your app developer prefer to chat in person or via phone, Skype, instant message or email — and how often? Or does he or she prefer to interact with you using a popular project and task management system like 37signals Basecamp. How often will he or she provide you with status updates?

6. What kind of special features can you create?
Apps rarely grab consumers attention without truly innovative and useful features. Figure out the bells and whistles you d like and then assess your developer s capabilities. For example, can your candidate add 3-D gaming, social media sharing, GPS check-ins or product coupon elements to your app?

7. Who will own the mobile app?
Typically the individual or company paying for a mobile app will own the finished product, Mureta says. To be sure you own all the rights to the app you commissioned, you and the app developer should sign a written copyright assignment or work made for hire contract. The document should establish confidentiality and state that you own the app s design, source code and all of its content.

8. How will you test my app?
Generally, the best way to test an app is simply to run it on the smartphone it will be used on. The candidate should provide a thorough explanation of how he or she conducts an extensive beta test to weed out any glitches. If bugs are found, how will the candidate fix them — and how quickly?

9. Will you submit my mobile app to app stores?
After you ve approved the beta-tested version of your app, the last step is for the developer to submit it to an app store for approval to be sold there. App submission is often a long, multi-step process that your developer should already know how to successfully navigate.

10. What are your fees and payment terms?
Draft a written agreement specifying that you will pay the developer by the hour or with a flat fee. Most developers, like Mureta, ask for a one-time fee upfront. Others require a deposit at the beginning of a project, often for up to half of the estimated total cost, with the balance due when the app is completed.

The most basic mobile apps can start between $1,000 and $5,000, but you could end up spending many times more if you pay a developer by the hour. More complicated mobile apps, including ones that are database driven or involve 3-D gaming, can cost thousands more.

SaaS Security: Gartner’s 5 Tips For IT Pros

Cloud services present a major challenge to IT professionals charged with safeguarding their organizations. These 5 steps can help managers bridge the gaps in SaaS security.

7 Cyber-Security Skills In High Demand

(Click image for larger view and slideshow.)

IT managers trying to protect their businesses are challenged to apply the same corporate security tactics used in-house to their public cloud deployments, according to a new report from Gartner .

More organizations are moving to mobile and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications as part of the digital transformation process, according to Gartner. This is a necessary step, but one that often leaves security gaps traditional IT solutions cannot fill.

In particular, IT managers face a major challenge in the large number of cloud applications procured without their knowledge — a practice known as Shadow IT. Many of these services lack sufficient enterprise controls, and security practitioners are unsure of how to secure them all.

“The heart of the issue is that most organizations are moving to a relatively large ecosystem of cloud service providers, rather than a monoculture,” said Gartner research VP Craig Lawson in a statement. The influx of cloud apps can do more harm than good.

“Creating and maintaining a security policy on a per-cloud-service basis is more than a chore when hundreds of cloud services are in use — it quickly becomes a high source of risk,” Lawson explained in the statement.

The trend has escalated to the point where the growth of cloud and mobile adoption has surpassed the control IT organizations have over their risk exposure. As a result, user behavior is a greater concern than vulnerabilities inherent to any cloud service provider.

Most businesses try to address the wrong SaaS risks, Gartner found. For example, IT managers are more likely to focus on provider security failure — which is relatively unlikely — than to address how they manage their own users and data.

When IT departments attempt to limit SaaS use within the enterprise, their efforts are often insufficient. They may cause users to find less secure alternatives. On top of this, their processes for buying SaaS products fail to meet the need for user, activity, and data controls.

Cloud vendors add to the IT challenge by not offering many assurances for their security features. Customers are left responsible for implementing native or third-party security measures. Many cloud services don’t offer security policy tools to span cloud services outside their own.

It’s critical for security practitioners to do everything they can to minimize the risk of SaaS security gaps within their organizations. These five steps, as recommended in Gartner’s report, can help security managers tighten cloud security and keep their organizations safe:

  • Leverage Cloud Access Security Brokers: These can help IT managers pinpoint unauthorized SaaS apps and help them decide whether the apps should be replaced. CASBs give managers a single control point to manage risk across a set of cloud services.
  • Recommend business-ready cloud services: Security standards will be better addressed by services that align with your organization’s specific technical needs.
  • Use third-party tools: Built-in tools and third-party services alike can boost the security of corporate data across cloud services and SaaS apps.
  • Support enterprise agility: Security pros can support enterprise agility by showing how IT can change as quickly as the business can.
  • Use threat protection: IT managers should launch the threat protection features of CASBs and Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) to cover cloud-based services that existing security solutions cannot access.

Have you faced challenges with cloud and SaaS security in your organization? Are these measures enough to help you mind the gaps? Are there other tips and tricks that have worked for you? Tell us about it all in the comments section below.

Outsource Online Captcha: Free custom magento AJAX captcha module #outsource, outsourced #online, php, #mysql, rets, real

Outsource Online Captcha

Free custom magento module to add captcha to your magento store.Which will protect magento sites from spam posts.Below is brief description about writing/creating a custom magento module based on this custom module. Those who want to customize this magento module will find this helpfull.I also hope this will be a good guide for anyone who are in magento development looking for any kind of magento customization

For getting extension key or to see screenshots visit magento connect page of this custom magento extension check the new magento connect page of this module
https://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/outsourceonline-captcha-6034.html
Latest version 1.0.9
Compatible with 1.3 to 1.6 versions of Magento.Protects forms registration,One page checkout, contactus, product review and send a friend from spam bot postings

Magento sites are targeted by spam bots like any other sites. In order to effectively prevent the bots you need to make use of captcha.Captcha is basically an image where some squiggly characters are written in such a way that only a human eye could read. The user is prompted to add the characters and the control will go further only if the characters submitted matches the characters in the image.

This custom magento module will add captcha functionality for magento forms for registration,One page checkout, contactus, product review and send a friend .Simply install the module and check the aforementioned forms. There are no addtional settings to configure if you only want image captcha proection but it is recommended to clear your cache after installing. If you dont see admin options in configuration section logout and again login .

Proactive spam protection in backend with botscout.com API

There is an addtional option to add proactive spam protection in backend with botscout.com API for magento. You can choose not have the conventional captcha image and only have the invisible spam protection with this API.You need to register(its free ) in http://www.botscout.com/ and get their credentials to use this feature. My Personal suggestion is to use both image captcha (good for blocking bot posts) and botscout protection(for blocking human spam posts to an extend).

This is the first module I submitted to magento since I started working on magento customization .Unlike customizing other opensource CMSs ,customizing magento appeared more complex in the begining. But once I started more involved in it I started to love it .Gradually magento development became a thing of interest.I would like to thank those who wrote great tutorials about creating custom magento modules. My special thanks to fontis whose recaptcha extension helped me a lot to build this module.Infact this module is actually a forked version of their recaptcha extension.Below I have explained internals of this module including using AJAX in magento modules. Please go through if you are interested in the internals of this module. Those who want to customize magento will find this helpfull.I also hope this will be a good guide for any kind of magento customization. If you have any doubts regading customization of this module feel free to contact me through tha form below

Creation of OutsourceOnline Captcha for magento/Writing a custom module for magento/Magento Customization basics/Using AJAX in a magento module/MVC in magento

Please install the module from magento connect before proceeding further. Please refer the following links and come back so that you can have a clear idea regarding the basics of module creation and AJAX integration in magento(if you haven’t t done this before)

I am not explaing the inner contents of each files since you will have the files added to your magento .Please note the naming conventions for each class and config nodes.By naming conventions I mean the usage of uppercase and lower case letters and underscores(_).For example a class name must contain the name of each folder in the path of that class from app/code/community folder, names of folders will be with first letter uppercase and remaining letters in lowercase. Each name should be sperated with an underscore. Custom modules will not work properly in magento without following naming conventions properly

Files of this module

Let us now go through the files that constitutes this custom extension

app/etc/modules/OutsourceOnline_Captcha.xml – lets magento know that the new module is in app/code community folder

etc /
——-config.xml – mentions the frontend, routing, model ,view, controller, template and layout files, translater file and admin default values
——-system.xml – admin configuration fields,field sources

What Is Cloud Computing? Explained In Simple Words #beginners, cloud, cloud #computing, explanation, guide, hosting, online #apps, online #storage, server, simple, tutorial, web

#

I m sure you ve heard the following two words being used extensively online in the last couple of years. Cloud Computing. The next time you read something about a service that mentions Cloud , you will immediately know what they mean by that, and what exactly cloud computing is and how does it work.

What is Cloud Computing and how does it work, explained in simple terms?

Actually, you ve been using cloud computing all this time, unless you were living in a cave somewhere, and that cave somehow didn t have an internet connection.

So let me put this in as simple terms as possible:
Cloud Computing is the ability to use the power of other computers (located somewhere else) and their software, via the Internet (or sometimes other networks), without the need to own them. They are being provided to you, as a service .

That means you don t have to go and buy some super powerful gigantic computer system and risk have it sitting there, doing nothing. By utilizing the cloud, everything is ready for you whenever you might need it. Exactly where the hardware and software is located and how it all works doesn t matter to you, as a user. It s just somewhere up in the vast cloud that the Internet represents.
Now you know one of the reasons they call it the Cloud Computing.

For example, many businesses use cloud computing as a means of remote backup solutions to store and recover their data offsite.

To illustrate the point even better, let s go over one typical example of cloud computing that you must have used before (exception are those with the cave thing from above).

Google as an example of cloud computing

What happens when you type and search something on Google?
Have you ever thought about this? Does your PC go through all that information, sorts it out for you and display all the relevant results? No, it doesn t. Otherwise, you would wait much longer for a simple results page to display. A simple PC can t process all those billions of websites in a fraction of a second, like Google does. Your PC only serves as a messenger to tell Google what you are looking for. Everything else is done by some of Google s powerful computers located somewhere, Who-Knows-Where in the world.
Now, did you ever care about how or where that comes from? Why would you, right? Exactly. That s a great example of how cloud computing is used.

At this point, I m sure you understand what cloud computing is and the basic idea behind it. If that s everything you wanted to know, you can stop here, and go enjoy your life knowing what Cloud Computing is. If you are interested in just a little tiny bit more about it, continue reading to the end (not long from here).

3 Types of Cloud Computing

1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is basically when you buy raw computing hardware to use over the net, usually servers, or online storage. You buy what you need and pay-as-you-go. The best and the most basic example of this type of cloud computing is buying a web hosting for your website. You pay monthly fee to a hosting company for the storage on their servers and to have them serve up files for your website from those servers. Another good example of someone who provides these types of cloud services would be RackSpace cloud company .

2. Software as a Service (SaaS) is a case where you use the complete software application that s running on someone else s servers. The best example of this is Google Docs. which you can use for creating and storing text documents, presentations, spreadsheets and so on

3. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is case where you create applications using web-based tools so they run on systems software and hardware provided by another company. As an example, consider a situation where you develop your own e-commerce website but have the whole thing, including the shopping cart, checkout, and payment mechanism running on a merchant s server.

That should be all you need to know to get you started.

As you can see, the idea behind cloud computing is very powerful and useful beyond measure. Especially now when you actually know what it is.

Mercury needs to update soon for ios11!

I like the streamlined app to collect credit card payment from Mercury in my very small business, and the backend system works great for payment.

I keep getting notifications from Apple that this application will no longer work after iOS 11 is released. Apparently this application does not support 64 bit architecture. I’m worried I will no longer be able to use my card swipe device to collect payments. Mercury if you’re reading this review will you please start working on this app and notify your customers that they will be able to continue to swipe credit cards? Thank you

This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad

How to Develop iOS Apps on Windows PCs by Using a Free

    #

Develop iOS Apps on a Windows PC

If you don’t have a Mac computer, iOS development can be challenging.

If you’re passionate about your app idea. you won’t let a computer get in your way.

Developing iOS apps on a PC is possible.I’ll show you how to do it in the iOS app development tutorial.

Here’s a rundown of the basics that you’ll need to get started.

Get a decent PC that can handle the job

You don’t need to build a supercomputer, but you’ll need something with a bit of processing power. Sadly, the NeoGeo in your garage won’t cut it (though you could fire it up to play some Oregon Trail.)

It’s even better if you can put together a Hackintosh. which lets you run OS X on an unsupported computer. If you want your PC to cross over to the Dark Side, you can follow these instructions .

Install a virtual PC application with Mac OS X

Another option is to simulate an installation of Mac OS X on Windows.

It’s fairly easy to do with virtualization software like VirtualBox. VirtualBox is free and open source.

You’ll also need a copy of Mac OS X. You can buy it online from the Apple Store or get it from someone who already owns a Mac computer. The exact installation steps will depend on your setup and software. Follow this VirtualBox tutorial to begin.

Yet another option is to try a service like MacinCloud. It’s basically a remote Mac rental service that allows you to use Apple hardware through the Internet. You may have experienced something similar with remote services like Teamviewer. It’s a good option but can be slow.

Install Xcode on your Hackintosh or OS X virtual machine

If you’re developing an iOS app using a Hackintosh or an OS X virtual machine, you’ll NEED to install XCode. It’s an integrated development environment (IDE) made by Apple that contains everything you need to build an iOS app.

After OS X and XCode are installed, you can begin coding and using the iOS Simulator to test apps just like you would on a real Mac computer.

    Consider cross-platform development tools

If you don’t want to use a Hackintosh or an OS X virtual machine, think about using a cross-platform development tool.

Smartface and Xamarin are the big players. These tools allow you to develop iOS apps on Windows, using a common code base.

The catch it can take time and effort to learn these platforms. You’ll also need to use a Mac or MacinCloud for App Store submission.

If you know JavaScript, you can try Smartface. Or if you know C#, Xamarin might be a better place to start. Both platforms have limited free plans.

    Create provisioning profiles and certificates

Have you installed OS X and Xcode on Windows on your PC?

Now you need to signup for an Apple Developer account and create a couple basic files.

Don’t stress, after a couple runs this is easy as pie.

You’ll need to “sign off” on the code before your app can be tested or run on real devices. This isn’t just when developing apps with a PC, every iOS developer needs to sign their code.

    Creating Certificates

A special certificate is needed that allows you to sign a project. There are 2 types of Certificates and Provisioning Profiles. Development (for testing), and Production (for submitting to the Store).

If you have access to OS X, you can create a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) using the Keychain Access app.

If you don’t have OS X, it’s a bit more complicated. But again, not impossible. You’ll have to run a few different commands and of course have access to the Apple Developer Program .

Here are the steps for creating a Certificate:

Step 1: Open Keychain Access and Request a Certificate

Fist step is to create a file that links your computer to Xcode development and distribution.

Open Keychain Access and select Request a Certificate from a Certificate Authority .

    Step 2: Enter Certificate Information

I personally like saving my certificate request to my computer. Click Saved to disk and enter a Common Name for your file. It is still required to enter a User Email Address, but it is not used for soliciting anything or needed for using your certificate.

Step 3: Upload your Certificate Signing Request to the Apple Developer Portal

Next we’re going to upload our Certificate Signing Request to the Apple Developer Portal. If you haven’t registered as an Apple Developer, do so now at https://developer.apple.com it will cost you $99.

Click on the Certificates, Identifiers Profiles.

    Next, select Certificates .

Step 4: Select Type of Certificate

There are several certificate styles, but you will need 1 Development Certificate to test apps and 1 Production Certificate to upload to iTunes.

If a Certificate area is greyed out like below, it is because you have created your limit. Click on the Certificate type on the left sidebar and revoke 1 or more certificates.

Next you will be asked to upload the Certificate Signing Request we created earlier.

No prob, we already took care of this.

Click Continue and upload the Certificate Signing Request. Then select Generate .

    Step 5: Download and Open

Once you’ve generated your Certificate, download it to your computer.

Find your Certificate that was just generated and double click it.

If you want to create another certificate, or a Development Certificate, go back and follow the same steps but click on Development Certificate instead of Distribution.

To view your Certificates, open Keychain Access and click Certificates .

Tip: It’s a good idea to right click on your certificates and click export. You can export certificates to P12 files so if someone else not using your computer wants to edit a code of yours they can.

    Submit to the App Store

So your iOS app is complete? You’ve overcame all the obstacles and you’re ready for the final step!

All you have to do is submit it to the App Store. If you have a Hackintosh or an OS X virtual machine, this process will only take about 2 minutes.

But submission can be a bit more difficult if you don’t have OS X. You can’t upload an app from a Windows PC to iTunes Connect because you need a program called Application Uploader…which is only available on Macs. The easiest way to get around this problem is to borrow a friend’s Mac or use a service like MacinCloud.

If you are still having trouble, be sure to ask someone inside Bluecloud Select. They will probably know because we have done this so many times before.

    What’s the bottom line?

This isn’t brain surgery, but it is a pain in the ass. Success is a journey and the road you take to get there might not be easy. But you can do it if you’re motivated.

How do you upload your iOS apps from your PC?

    Unable to Log On

    by Jedi Knight Calv

I reloaded this app on my newer iPhone after it developed some sort of crashing issue (something I assumed was isolated to the app on my phone). However when I go to log on, it doesn’t accept my information because the app still believes my user name to be something that it no longer is. No matter how many times I reloaded the app and reset my password (and entered in the correct, reset password) I was not able to gain access to my own account!

The clear solution to this is to allow users an option to enter their user name, even when redownloading this application from the iCloud.

Please take heed of this review and update the app. I love it, but if I can’t use it with this incarnation of the software, this version of the app is not any good.

    GOOD BUT RESTRICTIVE

The only thing I do not like about pof site is that it dictates what user age group you are allowed to contact or browse. I am 43 male and I can not browse profiles of girls younger than 29 years old! Why? On the other hand they would match me with ladies up to 60+. I do not know if this rule only apply to the free membership or not. Over all pof is much better than many dating sites I have used. I hope they would allow people the freedom of choosing what they want while continuing to give members the choice of using filters. Thank you.

The official app is the best app

For years I used Tweetbot but as my primary Twitter client but always had the official Twitter app in the background for certain and uses. I decided to try the Twitter app full-time this week and man am I impressed. Using the official Twitter app breathes new life into Twitter, makes me much more excited and invested in using the platform. This app has polish that Tweetbot doesn’t have. It also supports features such as poll and moments that other apps don’t. After a week of using the official Twitter client, I am now regretting I hadn’t switched much earlier.

The Best Hotel Search Engines and Booking Apps

By Melanie Renzulli. United States Travel Expert

One of my least favorite tasks when planning travel is booking a hotel. As a traveler, I m not particularly concerned with tons of hotel amenities, as I plan to spend the majority of my travel time exploring my destination, not my hotel s mini-fridge.

Of course, a decent hotel room can make a good vacation great and vice versa. With that in mind, here are some of the best hotel search engines and booking apps out there. In my experience, these hotel search engines are quick, have intuitive user interfaces, and provide users with the best tools for finding rooms that fit every budget and amenity preference.

    Kayak.com

Kayak was the first travel search engine to pull in rates from dozens of other travel deal sites, so it has long been my go-to for quick, painless hotel searches. A search for a hotel room in Las Vegas. for example, simultaneously searched big-name travel booking sites like Priceline, Travelocity, Expedia, and Hotels.com, as well as LasVegas.com. Kayak also allows you to create a price alert, select ambiance (business, romantic, etc.), and filter according to amenities, guest rating, and star rating. Kayak also offers a smartphone app.

    Hotel Tonight

Arrive in a destination and haven t yet booked a hotel? Hotel Tonight is the perfect smartphone app for such a dilemma. Acting as a broker for hotels who haven t sold off their inventory for the evening, Hotel Tonight lets you book a quality room quickly. Perhaps its best feature is that it only provides about three to five selections per night, taking overwhelming choice out of the equation. More

    AirBnB

AirBnB is an accommodations booking site with a lot of buzz because it is slightly different than all the rest. Acting as a mediary between hosts and travelers, this site allows you to book a place to stay from strangers, which means a much less cookie cutter experience than you get with a hotel stay. Rent a room, an apartment, or a vacation home —the inventory of accommodations is ever-growing at AirBnB. AirBnB can also be useful for finding a place to stay in destinations that are not as tourist-centric, making off-the-beaten-path travel more attractive for some. AirBnB also offers a smartphone app. More

    Hipmunk

Hipmunk, the first airfare search engine that showed whether flights offered wifi or not, provides the same service on its hotel booking channel. Similar to Kayak, in that it searches rates from a variety of hotel search engines, Hipmunk also lists up-front the wifi and parking availability at the hotels it serves up, saving you the time of opening up every listing and figuring out those choice amenities on your own. If you re among a growing number of travelers for whom wifi is an essential amenity, Hipmunk is an ideal booking site for you. Hipmunk also offers a smartphone app. More

    Room Key

Are you a hotel points person? If one of your biggest concerns is the hotel brand, then you may want to try Room Key. Choice Hotels, Hilton, Hyatt, Intercontinental, Marriott, and Wyndham have teamed up to create Room Key, which promises to provide the lowest rates on those brands rooms and make it easier for guests to earn hotel points and rewards. Room Key also sets itself apart with its guest reviews. Only guests who have stayed in a Room Key-affiliated hotel can write reviews, which is helpful in this age of fake user reviews. More

    Google Hotel Finder

Like Kayak, Google s search engine for hotels delivers information on hotel room rates from several different search engines. What I like about Google Hotel Finder s approach is its focus on location; it puts its maps up front with the search so you can quickly browse hotels and rates in a particular neighborhood. A drawback (for me, but perhaps an asset for some) is that Google helps you find a hotel but then sends you to a third party to book. Room reviews here are provided by Google users and Google-owned Zagat. More

    The Suitest

The Suitest is one of the newest hotel search engines on the block. Geared towards travelers who prefer a higher-end hotel experience, the Suitest lets users drill down selections according to details such as square footage, stone bathrooms, TV size, and flooring type. If you re a type-A personality (or are booking hotels for a details-oriented client), the Suitest may be for you. More
