Equine Psychotherapy

What is Equine Therapy?

Equine therapy is the discipline of using horses as a means to provide metaphoric experiences in order to promote emotional growth. The horses provide an excellent way for troubled youth to react when they are otherwise therapy resistant. Equine therapists will usually teach many lessons on ways in which horses learn, react, and follow instructions to the lives of youth themselves.

One example that is used often is when students are just beginning a horse therapy program, the instructor will have the horse stand in the middle of the arena. The youth are supposed to get the horse to move outside of a large circle without touching the horse at all. Many of the students often clap, whistle, yell all to no avail. Lessons are taught that when others, be it parents, friends, counselors or associates try and get us to do something the best way is probably not yelling, clapping, or forcing.

Students will also learn how to lead a horse. Most often they begin by trying to pull on a lead rope, standing in front of the horse. They learn that the best way to lead a horse is not in front or behind the horse, but by its side. A list of equine therapy programs can be found with information on their individual websites on their specific program details

Equine therapy should always be performed by a certified Equine-Assisted therapist. Many associations exists in order to provide certification or training in equine therapy. It has shown to be very effective with patients who manifest depression, attention-deficit, conduct disorders, dissociative disorders, anxiety, dementia, autism, and many other related disorders.

Why use equine therapy?

Equine therapy has shown to have many positive benefits when correctly taught by certified therapists. Some of them include:

  • Confidence
  • Self-Efficacy
  • Self-Concept
  • Communication
  • Trust
  • Perspective
  • Decreased Isolation
  • Self-Acceptance
  • Impulse Control
  • Social Skills
  • Boundaries
  • Spiritual Connection

Equine Therapy usually includes instruction in horse care, grooming procedures, saddlery, and basic equitation. Safety is the number one priority for all participants in equine therapy. Participants often wear helmets and other protective gear should they fall from a horse during a therapeutic session.

Moving Forward Rehabilitation

Our Moving Forward program is designed for those striving to restore abilities lost due to stroke, cardiovascular difficulties, orthopedic surgery and other debilitating conditions. Programs vary in frequency and intensity and include physical, occupational and speech/language therapies. Our goal is to return our participants home safely with the skills they need to continue life on their own terms.

Physical Therapy focuses primarily on independent mobility, regaining strength and balance, using proper body mechanics and energy saving techniques to better perform mobility tasks.

Occupational Therapy promotes independence with daily living activities like bathing, eating, dressing, self-care and home management tasks. Participants gain strength and coordination while learning to conserve their energy.

The goal of Speech/Language Therapy is to increase functional communication, cognitive skills, and teach safe swallowing by introducing diet modifications and special feeding techniques. Therapy may include muscle retraining, compensatory strategies, and use of communication devices.

Exclusively at American Senior Communities, the Road to Recovery program offers the opportunity for our interdisciplinary team, the patient, and their family to meet within the first 72 hours after admission to map out their Road to Recovery by identifying discharge goals. We monitor our rehabilitation outcomes and use the data to consistently improve our services. In-home assessments are performed by the therapy team prior to discharge to ensure a safe transition back to home.

Upscale benefits in our Moving Forward Wing (at selected locations) include private suites, exclusive dining area and courtyard, electric beds, spacious living rooms, elegant family lounge area, cable TV and phones.

Services include wound care, rehabilitation screenings, fall prevention, restraint reduction, restorative nursing, contracture management, wheelchair position and mobility, and walking ability programs. Add this to our highly successful New Energy Wellness (at selected locations) strength building and aerobic conditioning program, and you have an incredible combination that will truly help you move forward!

Skilled Nursing

The physical and emotional struggles that can accompany a debilitating injury or illness can deprive many seniors of the quality of life they ve earned. Our Skilled Nursing Care is designed to provide compassionate senior medical care to those recovering from stroke, heart attack, orthopedic conditions or other disabilities. We ve built a team of geriatric nursing specialists who have developed unique protocols and procedures for caring for the elderly through short-term or extended care, encompassing the physical and emotional well-being of each resident.

Long Term Care

Long Term Care is a great option for those who can no longer be cared for at home due to illness, injury, frailty, or other limitations. Under the guidance of an attending physician, long term senior care is provided at our long term care facilities by licensed nurses, specially trained health care aide and a full interdisciplinary care team. Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies are also available to ensure our long term health care residents function at the highest level of independence as possible. The setting is home-like, cheerful, soothing and secure.

Medicaid Accepted! Our Medicaid Specialists can assist you through the application process.

Respite Care

Respite stays are an option for those who need respite care for elderly friends or family on a short term basis. This allows home caregivers the ability to travel, start a new job, recuperate from an illness, or pursue other interests. Many find respite stays the perfect option for recovery from surgery or hospitalization. Should a short stay require extended care, we can accommodate that too. We carefully examine the needs of our respite guests and provide the level of care required to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable. Family members leave with the confidence that their loved one is safe and in good hands.

Hospice Care

Hospice and palliative care for seniors is designed to provide comfort, care and pain relief for those facing terminal illness. We partner with Hospice companies to offer comprehensive hospice services including skilled nursing care, respite care, spiritual and bereavement counseling, medical equipment and supplies, social services, and pharmacy services. Assisted Animal Therapy (AAT) in Hospice Care

Updated September 03, 2016

Assisted Animal Therapy (AAT), also known as pet therapy, is the use of certified cats and dogs as volunteers for the disabled, elderly, or frail and is often used in hospice as part of a comprehensive volunteer program .

The Benefits of Pet Therapy

Pet therapy has been shown to increase pain tolerance, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and bring smiles to patient s faces. It can be especially useful in the hospice setting for patients who have withdrawn from the people around them but find interacting with an animal easier and less painful.

Hospice patients often turn inward and withdraw from loved ones and the world around them as a way to ease the transition towards death. Talking to loved ones might become difficult and painful but interacting with a friendly animal is easy and offers a temporary reprieve.

If you are considering volunteering your pet to visit with hospice patients, there are some things you need to consider before starting.

Consider Your Pet s Temperament

A pet therapy animal should have a calm temperament and be able to tolerate sudden loud noises and groping hands. The animal should be accepting of friendly strangers and be able to sit calmly to be pet. It should be equally friendly towards other animals and show no aggression. The animal should be confident and consistently obey commands.

Overly excitable animals do not make good hospice volunteers. Hospice patients need a pet volunteer who is calm and exudes peace and love.

Older pets typically make the best hospice volunteers but a well-trained puppy might work as well.

Think Your Pet s Got What it Takes? Get Certified!

If your pet has the right temperament and is well-trained, the next step is to get your pet certified. Not all pet therapy animals require certification but I believe all hospice volunteer animals should be.

Certification shows that you care enough about patients to ensure your animal is the best it can be.

Some hospice agencies provide pet therapy training and certification. Check with the hospice agency you ve decided to volunteer for to inquire about their pet therapy program. (For tips on choosing a hospice agency to volunteer for, see How to Be a Hospice Volunteer ). If the hospice agency doesn t provide training and certification, you ll need to pursue it on your own.

The American Kennel Club developed the Canine Good Citizen Test in 1989 to evaluate and certify a canine s well-mannered behavior. The test consists of ten parts designed to evaluate a dog s ability to obey commands and his overall temperament.

Clubs and Organizations

There are several clubs and organizations that support testing and certification. You can contact any of the listed organizations below to inquire about certification:

WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING?

Assisted living is often viewed as the best of both worlds. Residents have as much independence as they want with the knowledge that personal care and support services are available if they need them. Assisted living communities are designed to provide residents with assistance with basic ADLs (activities of daily living) such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and more. Some states also allow assisted living to offer medication assistance and/or reminders. Assisted living communities differ from nursing homes in that they don’t offer complex medical services.

Assisted living communities range from a stand alone residence to being one level of care in a CCRC (continuing care retirement community). The physical environment of an assisted living is often more appealing to both potential residents and their families. These communities offer a more home-like atmosphere with apartment styles that typically include studio and one bedroom models. Kitchenettes usually feature a small refrigerator and microwave.

WHO NEEDS ASSISTED LIVING

Assisted living residents are usually seniors who have had a slight decline in health in some way and need assistance performing one or more activities of daily living (ADLs). Seniors who would like to live in a social environment with little responsibilities and a place where care is easily accessible whenever the senior may need it are the type of seniors you will find in an assisted living community. Statistically, the most common resident of an assisted living community is a female in her mid-eighties.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDEPENDENT LIVING, ASSISTED LIVING, AND NURSING HOMES

Independent living is a level of care that is below assisted living. Independent living communities are considered to be any form housing that is targeted to seniors over the age of 55. Independent living can include apartments as well as single family homes or townhouses. Typically there are activities planned for the members of the community as well as minimal assistance with yard work or other maintenance issues. Residents maintain as much independence as possible and are still able to perform all of the activities of daily living.

Nursing homes are for older adults who require care around the clock at and at a much higher level than those who reside in an assisted living community. Nursing homes provide staff nurses 24 hours a day.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE RESIDENT’S LEVEL OF CARE NEEDS TO INCREASE

Many assisted living communities allow the resident to age in place. Communities are able to do this because many have care available on-site, and if they do not, they contract with local healthcare providers so that the resident can stay at the community as his or her level of care increases. This care is paid for on top of the monthly rent and varies depending on the amount of care needed.

WHAT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES AND AMENITIES DO YOU FIND AT MOST ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES

Typically, all assisted living communities offer their residents prepared meals three times a day and help with light housekeeping and laundry. Depending on the community, residents may have access to a fitness center, swimming pool, beauty salon, post office and transportation. Communities will also plan events, activities and trips that residents can participate in that are anything from happy hour to concerts. Assisted living communities range from very small homes to very large campuses and therefore, amenities vary community to community. Another important aspect of assisted living is that most communities recognize that being able to keep a pet is very important to the resident, and therefore many assisted living communities will allow the senior to bring a pet as long as he or she is able to take care of it.

HOW ARE ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES REGULATED

Assisted living is regulated at the state level. Because of that, every state has their own policies that define and regulate what care and services are required for an assisted living community to meet the state standards.

States set regulations to clearly distinguish an assisted living community from other long-term care facilities. Other areas that states monitor are care, providers, food and safety.

HOW MUCH DOES ASSISTED LIVING COST

The national average for a private one bedroom apartment in an assisted living community is a little over $3,000 ($36,000 annually). These prices parallel the cost of living in a certain area. This price will also change depending on the room size, for example a shared apartment will be less expensive and a two bedroom or larger apartment will be more expensive than that average.

HOW DO YOU PAY FOR ASSISTED LIVING

Assisted living is typically paid for from private funds, but there are a few exceptions. Some long-term care insurance policies cover licensed assisted living. Check your loved one’s insurance policy to see if it is covered.

If the resident was a war veteran or is the spouse of a war veteran, he or she might qualify for Veteran’s Benefits that can be used to help pay for assisted living.

In a limited number of states, Medicaid funds and waivers are available to help with assisted living costs.

Assisted Living Laws by State: Know Your Rights

When parents move to assisted living, we want to be certain they are well cared for. Part of this peace of mind comes from understanding the rights of assisted living residents and the obligations of the assisted living community. But this task is made more challenging because assisted living communities are not regulated nationally like nursing homes. Instead, each U.S. state has its own laws, regulations and licensing standards for assisted living communities. For example, in some states, as many as 25 hours of training are required for caregiving staff while other states have no training requirements.

A community that looks dazzling may in fact be offering substandard care. And a community that looks a little rough around the edges could be a gem.

To help you make a fully informed decision, we are posting each state’s assisted living licensing and regulation requirements on our website. This guide is designed to help you answer questions such as:

  • How much training is required for staff?
  • How often are communities inspected, and what do the inspectors look for?
  • Is there a minimum staffing ratio?
  • What are the rights of the resident?
  • Can my parent be evicted?

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with your rights and the legal obligations of assisted living communities where you live. Click a state below to see its standards.

By putting together an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, aides, volunteers, social workers and clergy, we can serve the needs of our Hospice patients and their families.
