Hospice West Auckland Patron Sir Graeme Douglas dies

Hospice West Auckland’s Board and staff stand in silence with respect as we acknowledge the death of our Patron Sir Graeme Douglas. Our kaumatua Reverend Fred Holloway offers the whakatauki ‘Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne,’ a great Totara has fallen in the forest, adding he is a great loss for Aotearoa.

Sir Graeme’s patronage has been vital to Hospice West Auckland, allowing us to continue to build our expertise and service of our growing community.

CEO Barbara Williams says she will miss Sir Graeme’s advice and thoughtful contribution to Hospice West Auckland. “Sir Graeme graciously shared his encouragement, great leadership and support with me in my role as CEO, for which I am eternally grateful. He will be hugely missed by everyone.”

Sir Graeme’s generosity enabled us to establish our original social care team, from employment right through to vehicles, keeping them on the road visiting patients and families in their own homes. This means we have one of the most extensive social care services of New Zealand hospices.

Sir Graeme’s family has generously asked for donations to Hospice West Auckland in his memory, in lieu of flowers. We invite you to donate securely online: www.hwa.org.nz/donations/donate-now.

SKIN CANCER TREATMENT

Skin Cancer Diagnosis and Process

A thorough dermoscopic skin check is done for a melanoma skin cancers, basal cell skin cancers or sqaumous cell skin cancers. We have specialist dermoscopists and skin cancer surgeons at Eastmed Doctors, who can not only diagnose your skin cancer accurately, but also offer you to treat them here in the custom built surgical theatre. Your skin cancer surgery will by performed under local anaesthetic injections with minimal discomfort. The skin cancer that is cut out is send to the lab for the pathologist to analyse what type of skin cancer this is and whether we have removed it completely. The skin is usually repaired with absorbable sutures to give you a very neat scar.

Melanoma Skin Cancer Treatment

Melanoma skin cancer moles can either be dark or light or sometimes an enlarging red spot. If a skin cancer is suspected to be a melanoma the only treatment option is to remove this mole as soon as possible. If you discover a new brown, black, or red mole, please make an appointment with one of our doctors and this will be dealt with promptly.

Basal Cell Skin Cancer Treatment

A basal cell skin cancer arises from the basal layers of the skin. This is a very common skin cancer. It used to be known as a rodent ulcer in the past, since it eats away in the middle destroying tissue and bone on its way and enlarges when no treatment was offered. This does not happen now since we pick these up very early. They usually look like a pearl red or pink mole with lots of tiny blood vessels on the surface. Sometimes they are flat red spots on the skin. They usually break down in the middle, causing a hole in the bump, which can bleed. Many patients also have them in the ears which bleed causing stains on the pillows.

If the basal mole is large and flat and the diagnosis is uncertain, then a punch biopsy can be done to prove what it is before cutting the whole mole out. Some we do frozen section – this is removing a small part of the mole and have this looked by the pathologist in the lab quickly, before removing more out. This is similar to Moh’s surgery

If the punch biopsy reveals a superficial basal cell cancer, then Aldara ( imiquimod ) cream is funded. This is a immune cream, which works in conjunction with your immune system to clear this mole. This is very successful. Sometime Effudix cream can also be used.

If the diagnosis is certain or the punch biopsy reveals an invasive basal cell cancer, then removing this entire mole is the only option.

Squamous Skin Cancer Treatment

Squamous cell cancers usually come in the lips or legs. There look like very rough skin on top of the mole, sometimes bleeds. They can be very large red flat scaly spots on the skin. If the area is large then punch biopsy can be done to see how bad the squamous cell mole cancer is before removing this entirely. If it is a pre-cancerous mole, then Liquid Nitrogen or Freezing Ice works very well to clear this. If the squamous cell cancers especially on the face, ears or lips or legs which are deep, they need to be removed entirely to offer complete cure.

Sun Spots – Actinic Keratosis – Pre Skin Cancer Treatment

Some of these are precancerous lesions. They can be effectively treated with Aldara ( imiquimod ) or Liquid Nitrogen or Efudix ( 5-Fluorouracil cream ) creams.

Liquid Nitrogen – Freezing Ice

Liquid Nitrogen or Freezing ice treatment is available at Eastmed Doctors. This can be effectively used to treat a variety of pre-cancerous rough spots, sun spots and superficial basal cell skin cancers.

Anticancer Creams

Aldara ( imiquimod ). or Efudix ( 5-Fluorouracil cream ) are used at Eastmed doctors for treatment of skin cancers which respond to them – mainly pre-cancerous sun spots, Actinic keratosis and Superficial basal cell cancers.

Skin Cancer Checks and Treatment

If you are new patient and wish to have a skin cancer mole check and have your skin cancer treated at the same time, book an appointment online. choose Dr. Siva Nachiappan from the list and indicate in the special instruction box you are a new patient and you are coming in to have your moles checked. Alternatively you can ring the reception on 09 585 0188.

Exploring Auckland

Home to almost a third of New Zealand’s population, Auckland is a cosmopolitan city set on an isthmus in the northern half of the North Island. Perched between Waitemata and Manukau harbours, the city has absorbed well-preserved historic settlements as well as creating its high-rise central cityscape. It’s the country’s hub for shopping, plus dining at all levels and has a wide selection of pubs and bars as well as indoor and outdoor activities.

The city sprawls over a large urban area comprising many suburban centres, and is surrounding by more than its fair share of natural beauty, beaches and remote getaway destinations. Motorways make driving easy and traditional tram services have been re-introduced to cater for tourists. Ferry services join the waterside districts, and Auckland’s unique character is due to its site on an ancient, still active, volcanic field. As befits the country’s capital, the city offers accommodation at all levels, from upscale chain properties such as the Hyatt Regency and Langham Hotel to inns, budget lodgings and backpacker hostels.

Sights nearby

Auckland’s fascinating Maori history is a major attraction, and can be explored via artworks and cultural performances. The historic districts are rich in Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco heritage buildings, a maritime museum tells of the European settlement of the two islands, and Auckland Zoo ’s fine collection of native fauna is fun to visit.

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Complete with scenic views across Waitemata harbour and offshore island, the museum houses an important collection of Maori and other Polynesian artefacts, and hold daily Maori cultural performances. The early days of settlement are shown in an authentic, recreated town street on the top floor of the building, and kids will love the planetarium.

New Zealand National Maritime Museum

The country’s maritime history goes back to the ancient Polynesian migration to its islands, then takes in the first European exploration and subsequent settlement. This interesting museum displays interactive exhibits showing how the sea has influenced the nation, and offers trip around the stunning harbour on a heritage sailing ship.

A spectacular scenic drive starts in quaint, artistic Titirangi suburb and runs through bushland and forests rich in streams and waterfalls to the rugged, stunningly beautiful beaches along the west coast. Stop at Huia for a dip in the waterfall and Piha and Bethells beaches are patrolled and safe for swimming.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Eating out in Auckland is a taste thrill at all price levels due to the vast variety of fresh, locally grown ingredients and locally caught seafood. Eateries from budget through mid-range to high-end are found in the city, and the city’s many food courts serve typical Asian foods at good prices. Downtown and Uptown have a good selection of restaurants and, for a romantic night out, harbour and beachside places are perfect. Favourite local dishes include meat pies, and fish and chip shops are found in every district as tasty proof of the British heritage. Many bars here serve locally-brewed boutique beers and ales and the local wines are well worth sampling. For souvenirs, try downtown Queen Street and Albert Street, with New Zealand manuka honey a popular buy. The downtown High Street area is fashion central, with local designers well represented, and Karangahape Road is fun for its ethnic stores.

Public transport

Getting around via public transport is by ferry, bus, train or shuttle bus, and car hire is a useful option for exploring out of town. The Explorer sightseeing bus runs a loop around the central area’s main attractions, and the Auckland Discovery pass gives a day’s unlimited train, ferry and bus travel in the city, although it doesn’t cover the airport bus service. If you’re travelling during rush hour, the overland trains as the best option

Exploring Airport

Auckland International Airport is New Zealand’s largest, and has been voted Best Asia Pacific Airport five times in a row. Annual international passenger throughput stands at around 15 million a year, with a further seven million domestic passengers being served. Set 21kms from downtown Auckland, it’s a hub for Air New Zealand and the Kiwi arm of Virgin Australia. Its international terminal was upgraded five years ago and its domestic terminal was upgraded in 2013.

Air New Zealand is its main carrier, covering major cross-continental routes to the USA, UK and Japan as well as important Australian cities including Sydney. Domestic flights run to most of New Zealand’s favourite visitor destinations, and access to Auckland is by shuttle bus along State highways 20A or 20B. Car or campervan rental is available from a selection of internationally-known companies, and is a great way to see the stunning volcanic countryside of the North Island.

Sights nearby

Auckland, the country’s capital and largest city, is set between two magnificent harbours and is the shopping, dining and entertainment hub of New Zealand. Tourism amenities are first-class, with hotel accommodation such as the Best Western Motor Lodge and Airport Manor Inn close by the airport complex. Historic districts here boast heritage homes and churches, and the ancient Maori influence is shown in the city’s museum.

For a magnificent view of the isthmus on which Auckland sits and its two harbours, head to Mount Eden, the city’s highest volcanic cone. The perfectly symmetrical crater is known as Re Ipu Kai a Mataaho, the food bowl of the Gods, and should not be entered as it is a Maori sacred site. Wandering around its perimeter is fine, and gives the best views.

Fans of nature and her wonders will love this zoo as it’s modern, spacious and cares extremely well for its resident species. Apart from the big five African beasties, there’s a strong simian presence and a whole section devoted to the unique fauna and bird life of New Zealand. Kids love this part of the zoo, and it’s set just minutes from downtown.

– Waiwera Thermal Spring Resort

A scenic drive north of the city is the ultimate hot-spring experience at Waiwera Resort. The volcanic field on which the city sits is still active, and the resort takes full advantage by offering a selection of warm, soothing pools, a medi-spa with delicious massages and hydro-slides for the kids. Its 350,000 visitors a year say it’s one of the best Kiwi thermal spas.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

The choice of eateries in Auckland means you’ll never go hungry, whatever your taste in cuisines. The formal, chef-operated restaurants are world-class, spurred on by the wide range of locally-grown fresh ingredients and Pacific seafood, and there’s a stylish selection of less grand options including gastro-bars, wine bars, ethnic eateries and trendy cafes. Fish and chips is an all-time favourite found everywhere, and best eaten straight from the paper wrapping and preferably on the beach. Pubs and bars are everywhere, with many serving Kiwi wines and locally brewed boutique ales and beers. Local markets are great for jewellery, art and crafts, organic foods, fashions and home-made goodies as well as the country’s world-famous honey.

Public transport

Getting from Auckland International Airport is by road, via the Airbus Express, running to the downtown district from 07:00 to 06:00. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes, dependent on time of day and traffic conditions. Local buses run to a nearby train station for connections with the central districts, and a useful alternative is the shuttle bus service which delivers visitors to their hotels.

Accommodation In Auckland

To say the ancient lands of Auckland were quite desirable is something of an understatement. People from all over the world came for the fertile soil and stunning landscapes, and legends of fierce battles abound. The city s Maori name, Tamaki Makaurau, means Tamaki of a thousand lovers and you re about to become one of them.

Whether you re looking to make family memories, get your heart rate going or just eat your way through all the offerings of a new city, Wotif s Auckland travel guide is here to make planning your holiday easier than biting into a piece of mince pie (though you can do that, too).

Plan Your Trip

You may go out with an awesome tan, a stuffed belly or some sweet selfies, but every jet-setter comes in the same way: through Auckland Airport (AKL), 20km south of the city centre. The SkyBus runs direct to downtown 24 hours a day, and taxis are always an option, but if you re getting in late or just had a long day, look into hotels near Auckland International Airport and regroup. After all, you ve got big plans!

If You re Focused on Food

Food fanatics will really have no shortage of places to stay in Auckland. This international city has literally everything you could want, from classic fish n chips to Vietnamese and Italian.

True foodies will rejoice in the bohemian vibe of Herne Bay and Posonby but where should you book your Auckland accommodation in this gourmand s playground? Five-star enthusiasts should settle down at the north end of Posonby Road to have wine bars and steakhouses at their fingertips; those seeking something a little more funky can stay near Karangahape Road (or K Road, for those in the know), famous for its cabaret-style restaurants and world fusion cuisines.

If You re Bringing Family

Edible attractions aside, Auckland s main draws include plenty of family-friendly fun. But since they re pretty spread out, you might be wondering where to stay in Auckland’s CBD. Worry not: You’ll be near all the bus lines and major roads you need to explore via public transport or hired car (that you get from Wotif, duh).

Kids of all ages and adults who are kids at heart will love the Auckland Zoo, and at 17 hectares, it will certainly keep them occupied for a day or two. Older children will be thrilled with a ferry ride to Rangitoto Island, where you can explore the rugged volcanic terrain on a wild 4WD tour. The activities are endless, but don t worry. Our Auckland hotel deals will leave you with plenty of cash for family feats.

If You re Feeling Adventurous

Romping through New Zealand s largest zoo isn t the only record you can take advantage of with an Auckland hotel near downtown. The country s tallest man-made building, Sky Tower, is right in the city centre.

What s so adventurous about an observation deck, you ask? This one is a little bit different: Only a harness and a narrow walkway are between you and the ground below no handrails, all adrenaline.

If that s still not thrilling enough for you, you can jump off! Plummet 190m toward the earth on New Zealand s only wire-based jump. Land in City Plaza to a round of applause from the crowds and you ll feel like a movie stuntman.

If You Came to Party

Night owls have it easy here. There is just one thing to do: Book accommodation in Auckland near the Viaduct Harbour neighbourhood and get ready to get down.

Start your day with high-noon cocktails on a lively outdoor patio (because who are we kidding, you won t be up in time for breakfast), then take the ferry across Waitemata Harbour and catch some rays on Devonport Beach.

Return and refuel with a delicious dinner before you hit Customs Street and dance the night away. Holiday plans: One and done.

Fun Festivals and More

If you re lucky (or if you re a plan-ahead, savvy kind of traveller), you ll catch one of the city s festivals. Auckland Domain, the city s oldest park, hosts heaps of events throughout the year, like the popular Lantern Festival.

Book Auckland hotels in late February to capture some snaps that will impress all your friends. We re talking 800 lanterns floating through the sky, live traditional performances and grand finale fireworks. Your social media profile will never be the same.

In search of something groovier? Summer time is the right time for music festivals, and hotels in Auckland will put you near everything from hip-hop to indie fests.

If you re ready to get down on the North Island, the City of Sails is ready to welcome you into its growing fan club. An Auckland getaway won t leave you skint (read: broke), either.

Get the best deals when you bundle your hotels and airfares with Wotif s awesome Auckland holiday packages. Tu meke (good job!). You re well on your way to chowing down and living it up, Kiwi-style.

    Totara Hospice South Auckland

This project involved the extension of existing accommodation and associated support and community spaces. The client’s vision is for their services and facilities to be a hub of a network of community palliative care service providers, where care is provided within a variety of contexts and community and hospice-based services are fully integrated.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and all the Chow:Hill team that have worked on the Hospice. It is such a pleasure to work with such a professional, obliging group of people who are team players. If every job was to achieve this result where everyone worked to achieve the same goals then contracting would be a lot easier for everyone.– Donald Young (Board Member Hospice South Auckland)
