A Sophisticated Santa Barbara Hotel

A Sophisticated Santa Barbara Hotel

Everything we had hoped it would be. The room was perfect, the staff was friendly and professional, they helped us with dinner reservations and gave us great recommendations for seeing things around town. We loved our time at the Inn, and we can’t wait to come back!

From a Platinum Marriott member who has stayed at a lot of different properties in California: Stayed at the property on a Saturday. Perfect place for a romantic get-away. Pretty quiet throughout, though the property appeared fully booked. Friendly staff, and also professional. Would highly recommend to those in the area.

Karen J. Los Angeles, CA

This is truly one of the best places I’ve ever stayed. The rooms are decorated with such style, unlike anything I’ve experienced in a more chain-like type hotel. This was intimate and romantic! We only wished we could have spent more time there. Thanks again for a wonderful stay and to all your great staff who were so kind!

Family get-together for a family wedding

The nicest, most enthusiastic staff who kindly put up with my exuberant, loud family and could not have been nicer. The car parkers could not have been nicer! My 4th stay here and I can’t wait to come back!

Lovely Stay

My sister and I stayed here in March while in town for a family event. We had a lovely room with two comfortable Queen beds and two bathrooms! The staff was very friendly and the daily breakfast was great. The location is excellent-you can walk to Butterfly Beach and also to all the cute shops and restaurants in the lower village of Montecito. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Lovely stay in quaint hotel

This hotel is located in an upmarket area with shops and eateries round about. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Breakfast is a basic continental but just enough to start the day. Santa Barbara is close by with Santa Monica just over an hour. Would love to stay here again in the future.

Iain, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Treat yourself to this charming hotel when staying in Montecito.

Location, Location, Location! This is such a nice hotel, small and beautifully done. If you love history, architecture and great service The Montectio Inn will not disappoint.

More I knew going in not to have high expectations of a Motel 6 and I knew we only needed a place to sleep for one night so I didn t think it would be as horrible as it was. If I could give zero stars I would. Something seemed wrong right away because the comforters were totally wrinkled but I thought maybe they left them sitting in dryer too long. Wrong! Underneath the comforters were sheets full of long black hairs. The fan in the bathroom also wasn t covered. My husband asked to be moved to another room. The next room the AC had a high pitched noise that you couldn t correct. In the 3rd room, one of the beds totally buckled when my husband was checking for hair in the sheets. The 4th room that we ended settling with still had many hairs in the bed and boogers on the wall next to one bed. I cleaned the wall myself and we all slept on top of the comforters and got up early to get out as soon as we could. I m currently washing everything that touched any part of those rooms. I will never stay at a Motel 6 again!

More Let s start off by saying the pictures of the queen room are very decieving, the room is very small, and the bathroom is in the room like a studio which can be awkward if sharing. When you walk in the room it looks promising because the decor is minimal and nothing is upholstered. The room looks like you could essentially hose it down to clean it which leads me to believe it will be very clean. It s not. There was visible dust and dandruff on the headboard too and in the corners coming off the wall at the base of the matress. There was hair on everything which I m trying to convince myself was just from the dryer. So then you think to yourself, ok I just need to sleep here, get some rest no big deal well. The mattress is on a base that can only be described like one of those pull out couches from the 90 s. It has one of those bars right across your back so you wake up in agony. We picked this hotel because chains (imo) usually have figured out how to give the most affordable and pleasant experience. Not in this case. Shame.

I booked the hotel 2 weeks prior to the stay. A couple of days prior to the stay the room was more than 50% cheaper. Naturally we cancelled the first reservation and re-booked at the lower rate. The front office smelled of curry which is fine I suppose if you are in a restaurant but not a hotel office/lobby. We went our room only to smell mold in the bathroom. We tried to call the front desk but the phone had no cords attached – this was a not meant to be a wireless phone (the phone looked like it came from he early 90s possibly late 80s). I might ad. I found the cords behind the furniture but it did not help as the phone did not work. We walked back to the office and the manager/owner came back and said she could not smell anything. She was politely arguing with my friend who was telling her that she was allergic to mold and would not be able to sleep. Finally she showed us the room next door only for it to smell of smoke (this was a non smoking room) in the bedroom. The bathroom had a strong smell – like a bad cleaning product. We asked for another room but were told we had to pay more. Or we could go back to our original room and she would spray it. We walked away back to the original room where our belongings were talking about how we would rate on social media when we the manager/owner came back to us and tell us she could give us the larger room at no additional cost – that room had no smell. However the tv did not work and the phone barely had any buttons on it. at first the manager/owner said she could not do anything about the tv. Then she told me to unplug the tv blah blah blah and see if that would work. I followed the instructions 3xs with still no tv. Finally the manager/owner came and after 15-20 min got the to to work (I think on accident) because she seemed surprised when it worked. She tried to blame it on the the oat guests. Whatever.

I would like to add that the parking lot does NOT have enough spaces per room.

If I could give zero stars I would. The customer should come first especially if it comes to health. A room should not smell. Nor should an office/lobby smell.

Too many choices in Santa Barbara so this should not be considered.

America s love-affair with ranch dressing #Santa #Barbara #plumber

America’s love-affair with ranch dressing.

America’s love-affair with ranch dressing.

Ranch Dressing

There is a great Simpsons episode in which Homer, overcome by carbon-monoxide fumes, hallucinates that he is an Ottoman sultan. Though he is surrounded by gyrating concubines, the Simpson family patriarch is not satisfied. “I grow weary of your sexually suggestive dancing,” he says. “Bring me my ranch-dressing hose!” Within seconds, the women are blasting him with a geyser of gooey ranch.

Homer’s tastes are meant to reflect those of the American everyman, and in this case the Simpsons writers nailed it: Ranch dressing has been the nation’s best-selling salad topper since 1992, when it overtook Italian. How did this simple mixture of mayonnaise, buttermilk, and herbs become America’s favorite way to liven up lettuce?

In the early days, ranch dressing didn’t seem likely to take Italian’s crown. It was a strictly local delicacy—the pride of Steve and Gayle Henson, a couple who’d opened a dude ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif. in 1954. Visitors to the Henson spread, known as Hidden Valley Ranch, came for the horseback riding, but they frequently left with fonder memories of Steve’s special dressing. The Hensons began to give their guests to-go bottles, and eventually they started a small plant where they manufactured packets of ranch seasoning for the retail market.

The packets were problematic: You had to blend the herbs with both mayonnaise and buttermilk to create the dressing, and very few households kept a spare carton of buttermilk in the fridge. But the Hensons’ product sold reasonably well, and in 1972, the Clorox Company bought the Hidden Valley Ranch brand for $8 million.

Before ranch could become a national favorite, however, the scientists at Clorox had to reformulate the original recipe and make it easier to use. First, the great minds behind Pine-Sol and Liquid-Plumr added butter flavoring to the seasoning so home chefs could make the dressing with plain milk. But the real breakthrough came in 1983, with the debut of bottled—or, in the lingo of the dressing industry, “shelf stable”—Hidden Valley Ranch. At that time, more and more dressings were being sold in nonrefrigerated bottles; today, according to the market-research firm Mintel, shelf-stable dressings account for 82 percent of sales in the $1.7 billion industry. Ranch presented a serious challenge, because its high dairy content makes it susceptible to quick spoilage. But Clorox managed to add the right blend of preservatives to give the dressing a shelf life of approximately 150 days. (The science behind Clorox’s innovation is secret, though it’s a safe bet that Steve Henson’s original recipe didn’t call for calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate .)

Once ranch was available in a bottle, Americans fell in love with its rich-yet-inoffensive taste. It is devoid of potentially objectionable ingredients, such as chili sauce (a key component in Thousand Island) or anchovies (found in Caesar and Green Goddess). And perhaps more important, ranch is fattier than humdrum Italian, which is basically a gussied-up vinaigrette. Ranch dressing, which arrived at a time when mayo had gained a reputation as a diet-buster, was essentially a socially acceptable form of the gloopy condiment. It quickly became the preferred way to infuse otherwise healthy dishes with a palatable amount of fat. The salads offered by chains such as Little Caesars or McDonald’s were soon accompanied by packets of ranch, to the chagrin of nutritionists.

Ranch became increasingly popular in the mid-to-late ’80s, when executive chefs at casual-dining and fast-food companies began to use it as a moistening agent for their processed grub. Ranch worked well on burgers and sandwiches because it’s thinner than mayonnaise, which skeeves out some consumers with its texture, but thicker than oil and vinegar, which can seep into bread and turn it soggy. During the wrap craze of the 1990s, ranch became a key condiment on such products as KFC’s Twisters. and it also turned up in a wide range of dishes at chains like Applebee’s (where the Tequila Lime Chicken is smothered in “Mexi-ranch”) and Chili’s (which pioneered chipotle-flavored ranch). And as a flavoring, ranch got another boost from chipmaker Frito-Lay, which created the wildly successful Cool Ranch Doritos in 1987. Recipes cannot be patented, so Clorox could not prevent Kraft or Unilever (which owns the Wish-Bone brand) from creating their own ranch dressings, to say nothing of preventing snack-makers from inventing ranch-flavored chips. Clorox made the best of this situation, though, by partnering with Frito-Lay in 1994; the duo then released Hidden Valley Ranch Wavy Lay’s .

Will ranch forever dominate the dressings realm? At the moment, there are no obvious contenders for the top slot (although honey Dijon, the seventh most popular dressing, has been making impressive strides). But recent instances of ranch-based decadence suggest that perhaps a backlash is in order. In the last few years, restaurateurs—inspired in large part by the rising popularity of Buffalo wings, which are traditionally accompanied by a bowl of blue cheese dressing—have begun to offer ranch as a dipping sauce. Chili’s, for example, created a wasabi-ranch dressing to accompany its boneless Shanghai wings. And numerous Pizza Hut franchises in the South began offering cups of ranch alongside their pies, after a few franchisees discovered that teenagers were dipping their slices in the dressing. Although dunking one’s pizza in ranch dressing is a culinary act best described as arterial suicide, the company took the concept nationwide earlier this year with the debut of the Dippin’ Strips Pizza. which is precut into easily dippable ribbons and served with ranch “sauce.” Short of being blasted in the face with a ranch-dressing hose, that’s about as intense a fat rush as the human body can handle.

About UC Santa Barbara

A learning and living environment like no other.

Introduction

Palm-framed vistas of the blue Pacific and the golden Santa Ynez Mountains. The scent of eucalyptus mixed with the saltwater breeze. Breathtaking natural beauty combined with enormous intellectual vitality. This is the University of California, Santa Barbara, and there is no other campus quite like it.

Here on the edge of the Pacific, in a setting removed from urban pressures and distractions but vibrant with cultural and academic activity, many of the country’s most promising students join a community of scholars whose accomplishments are internationally recognized and whose skills as teachers are evident each day in classrooms and laboratories.

In the humanities and the arts as well as in engineering and the sciences, UC Santa Barbara introduces students to novel ways of thinking, learning, and conducting research.

Academic Quality

Pioneering research is a critical component of the highest quality education. UCSB’s faculty includes six Nobel Prize winners and scores of elected members of national and international academies and societies as well as dozens of winners of Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellowships. The campus is one of only 62 research-intensive institutions elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities.

Within this community of scholars, the life of the mind, the pursuit of knowledge, and the experience of growth, both personal and intellectual, are the hallmarks of daily life. UCSB enrolls more than 23,000 students, almost 3,000 of them at the graduate level. Competition for admission is keen. In recent years the campus has enrolled the most academically competitive and ethnically diverse classes in its history.

More than 200 majors, degrees, and credentials are offered through UCSB’s five schools and the Graduate Division. The College of Letters and Science alone offers 80 majors. The College of Creative Studies offers talented students an alternative approach for pursuing advanced, independent work in the arts, mathematics, or the sciences. The College of Engineering offers degree programs in seven disciplines.

The university also has two professional schools: the Bren School of Environmental Science Management, and the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.

Scholarship and Service

The preeminent scholarship, instruction, and public service that define UCSB have helped shape its identity as a place of enormous and exceptional possibility — a magnet for innovation.

Originally a small, independent teachers’ college, Santa Barbara joined the renowned University of California system in 1944 and has since grown to be an integral and important part of public postsecondary education in the state.

Recognition of UCSB’s academic quality takes many forms. One of the most prestigious is support from the National Science Foundation. The campus is now home to 12 national centers and institutes, eight of which are sponsored by the NSF, including the Materials Research Laboratory, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, the Southern California Earthquake Center and the renowned Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics.

The California NanoSystems Institute — one of the California Institutes for Science and Innovation — focuses on dramatic breakthroughs in materials, devices and resulting technologies, made possible by controlling form and function at the nanoscale. The institute is a research partnership with UCLA. New research buildings at both campuses house the institute.

At the interdisciplinary Carsey-Wolf Center, students and scholars study everything from silent films to the latest in digital media and satellite communications, all in the context of a strong liberal arts and sciences curriculum.

Charming stay, walk to the beach and harbor

What a great find! This small inn is welcoming and pleasant, with complimentary bottle of champagne, breakfast, daily afternoon wine and cheese reception, and cookies in the evening. Bicycles are available for guest use, which was a very popular choice around the waterfront area. The room was far more spacious than anticipated and well designed with many little extras. The bed is incredible! Hotel staff is exceptionally gracious, helpful, and professional, and the rooms, grounds, pool, and dining/reception areas are spotlessly clean and in good condition. Parking is free. The property is quiet and safe. I would highly recommend staying here.

Wonderful Older Hotel

The hotel was well maintained and the staff was great. Every one of them were very helpful. When we were in the bathroom, we could hear noises from the room next door through the vent. It really wasn’t bad at all. Once we were in the bedroom we couldn’t hear those same noises. This is to be expected at least a little bit in an older hotel. As I mentioned above, it really wasn’t bad at all. The area is very quaint and it was easy to walk to local restaurants or just walk around and enjoy the scenery. We stayed because of an appointment at the Sansum Clinic. It was very easy to get to the clinic from this hotel as well.

Beautiful grounds, quiet, w a GREAT dining porch

This is a lovely, quiet, beautiful, restful hotel. The website doesn’t do it justice. Perched inland and up in the hills of Santa Barbara, the hotel has a free shuttle that will take you anywhere within a 5 mile radius – which means all of downtown SB, beaches, parks, the Mission and other sites. The efficient and welcoming staff hums around the campus and is present immediately when needed. The pool is lovely; the workout room is reasonably useful and the grounds and gardens are fabulous. But, the best feature is the terrace off the dining room where everyone wants to eat; guests and locals alike. The breakfast fruit and eggs bene were among the best we’ve ever had. It was chilly in the mornings this past June and the staff had the heaters cranking and the blankets handy which was a real treat since we really wanted to be outside. We found the salt encrusted meats at dinner time a bit too salty. The rooms were spacious and the staff very accommodating. It’s easy to see why El Encanto gets rated so highly – I wasn’t fully convinced until we stayed. We’ll go back for sure.

The Inn At East Beach is a retro expierence. Frank is hysterical, and so welcoming. The hotel is in a perfect location, walking distance to almost everything. Comfort and character, by the beach, good value.

Attractive, beautifully decorated, older and didn’t feel like a copy of a chain of hotels; we really enjoyed it. Good continental breakfast with nice fresh fruit. Good bed. The windows open which is great because Santa Barbara has fresh ocean air and a good climate. Very convenient location to the pier, restaurants, shopping. They’re having trouble upgrading TV system so no HBO, just regular cable; fortunately we didn’t care but that might be a big inconvenience for some; be sure and ask if it’s fixed. I highly recommend Eladio’s restaurant by the pier, about a block away, great food! The highway can be a little noisy but not a problem at night.

Location is great. Hotel is not.

For the price paid, this hotel was a disappointment. It was run down, old, and came complete with strange smells. They do a halfway decent job of trying to keep it up, but that doesn’t stop this hotel for showing its age. I think the best way to describe my experience is to say I felt like I was staying in a cheap Motel 6 that had been renamed. Now here’s the good part. This hotel is located right across the street from the beach, so if that’s what really matters to you, then you might overlook the condition of the rooms. It’s also within walking distance to restaurants and shops, so I’d rate this place very highly on location. Unfortunately for me, I was there for the wineries about 25 miles away, not necessarily for the beach. I would have gotten a hotel closer to the wineries, but I wanted to be near more restaurants and stores. Almost all of Santa Barbara’s small hotels are outrageously overpriced because it’s a touristy beach town near wine country, so despite what I’ve said above, this is about the best you’ll get (especially near the beach) for a reasonable price. I’d recommend this particular hotel to others only if they care much more about the location than they do about the condition of the hotel.

Santa Barbara Motels

This property is an older motel on a busy street that has been completely remodeled and updated. They have done so with great attention to detail and have stylishly created a space that feels like a quaint Latin American Village. The rooms feel modern with good beds and shower heads and accessories. Best of all, it is a really good value. Even though we needed to be on the opposite side of Santa Barbara, we have stayed here and enjoyed it on two occasions. You could argue that their continental breakfast is lacking because of a lack of a dining area but they have maximized a small outdoor patio for a pleasant 3 table setting if your plans allow. In this city of inflated hotel prices, we will return to Oasis Inn and Suites.

Although my room was small, it had been updated. The bathroom was recently updated with nicer fixtures. The grounds, although small, were well-tended and a respite from the typical motel fare. This is just across the street from Gelson’s market and less than a mile from the La Cumbre Mall, so it’s close to shopping and not far from Downtown Santa Barbara. There is a very nice residential area behind the motel so I had no concerns walking at night. The staff was very friendly too.

My room was fairly close to State Street, so I did start to hear traffic around 7am. If you’re a light sleeper or like to sleep in you might want to get a room near the back of the motel.

Location. Staff friendly, they try to be helpful. Continental breakfast was generous, they need more tables and chairs for guest to sit, maybe more table for two. Towel/shower were separate from the sink. Generous assortment of toiletries. The décor was appealing but badly needs to be maintained. Nice glass desk. Glass side table was wobbly. Lots of hangers in closet. Nice big dresser could have used a mirror over it.

The room was not clean. Rooms are tired looking. All decks and walkways look dirty, need to be hosed down. Our reservation was for a double Queen with a Kitchenette (4 ladies). We were were given a King Kitchenette. After being persistent they moved us to a double Queen Kitchenette. No air-conditioning and our window opened up to the parking lot. Uhg! The beds are ok, very springy, the linins appeared clean. Bath towels are nice size and thick. Upholstered chairs were comfy but not clean. Edges of carpet and base boards not cleaned in a long while. Glass on fireplace had hand prints and drips on it. Bath floor covers and sink area are a beach mat type of material and moldy. Bath sink is a huge rectangle with two facets, but the facets are to close together for two adults. The vanity should have spanned the entire wall with a the mirror spanning the wall as well for more light and use. Vanity needs electric out let at each end. The LED lights over the bed did not work properly, but a great idea. Door matts in front of each room were cute but falling apart. Kitchenette was ok, badly needs remolded the microwave was on top of the refrigerator. The full size refrigerator, stove top and oven are to big for the small kitchenette. More counter and pantry space less appliance! A full size coffee maker would be better. There were only 2 coffee mugs (for 4 people). Poor assortment of dishes and glass wear. Use Small dish sponges and or dish clothes, not sloppy drippy scrub pads. When the maid washed the drinking glasses she left them face down in the bottom of the sink! Ick! Minimum toilet and paper towels, no extra we ran out. Beach; chairs, towels and umbrellas broken and shabby. Consider ordering good ones business name or logo on them. Pool needed vacuumed. Pool lounges broken down, deck dirty. The over all décor would be lovely but is not standing up to commercial use.

The manager, Frank, was pretty much the only highlight of the hotel.

The hotel was EXTREMELY HOT. Yes, Santa Barbara was having very humid weather, but the hotel was much hotter than the temperature outside. Be warned, this hotel has NO AIR CONDITIONING. I can guess that the walls are not insulated either. I have stayed at so many hotels in my life, from very very basic motels to high end hotels, and never in my life have I been to a hotel with no air conditioning. It was miserable. Guests had to leave their doors open and every one just seemed so uncomfortable. Nothing about the room was inviting or cozy. The shower finish was all peeling off. The bathroom floors were an odd bamboo material and were actually damp when we arrived, which seemed very odd. To me it just seemed like an old motel that went through a crappy renovation so that it could charge hundreds of dollars per night. Arriving at the hotel did not feel like a vacation – no charm, no excitement. Unfortunately, I would never return.

Shame.

Hospice Care

If you’re wondering where to turn for help caring for a terminally ill loved one, hospice could be your answer.

Hospice is a special way of caring for a person at the end of life, offering comfort and compassion when medical treatment no longer offers a cure. Hospice is available for many life-limiting conditions, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart failure, or even just old age.

Hospice care is family-centered and takes place wherever home is. Our highly skilled and specially trained hospice team includes physicians, nurses, hospice aides, medical social workers, and spiritual and bereavement counselors. We work hand-in-hand with your doctor to provide expert medical care, pain and symptom relief, as well as emotional and spiritual support so that your loved one may live his or her remaining days to their fullest. A nurse is available 24/7.

Dietary counseling and Integrative therapies are also available to meet individualized needs. Specially trained hospice volunteers provide supportive services for patients and families. These include conversation, companionship, compassionate listening, massage, preparation of a light meal or running an errand.

VNHC participates in We Honor Veterans. a program that helps hospice professionals learn how to better serve veterans through the challenges they may be facing at end-of-life from their unique experiences serving in the military.

Serenity House. our inpatient hospice house, is an option if your needs cannot be met at home.

Hospice Care is a benefit under Medicare, Medi-Cal and most private insurances. Please find more information at Hospice: A Medicare Service Worth Asking About and Payment for Services .

Visiting Nurse Hospice Care does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability, religion, gender, sexual orientation or age in admission, treatment, or participation in its programs, services and activities, or in employment.

Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc.

I wish more people knew about hospice, or that I did sooner. They offer free grief counseling, have a fantastic lending library, a beautiful space, and lots of grief therapy groups. Luckily I haven t had to use too many of their resources but everyone is welcome and they understand the grieving process. The grief therapy group I was in (and there are lots of speciality ones, some for parents, some for art, some for suicides, some for terminal illnesses) was incredibly supportive and helpful. Meeting times are weird, but it s a free and wonderful service. Highly recommend.

Santa Barbara Guide

Santa Barbara proudly bills itself “the American Riviera” for its resemblance to the coastal towns of France and Italy. It’s not just an empty marketing slogan. The Santa Ynez Mountains are this city’s Alps, the Pacific Ocean its Mediterranean Sea. The climate is comparable, too, with pleasantly warm summers and pleasantly cool winters—making for prime grape-growing conditions. The Santa Barbara sunshine blends well with everything it touches, from the city’s vibrant wine scene to the outdoor shopping thoroughfares to the family attractions scattered near the beach.

Santa Barbara for Wine Lovers

  • Urban Wine Trail. Taste an array of Central Coast varietals at 17 tasting rooms spread out between State Street and Milapas Street. Check out the city’s abundant Spanish colonial revival architecture along the way.
  • Dine al fresco at Zaytoon, which serves Lebanese cuisine and fine wines.
  • Visit the Funk Zone for tasting rooms and art galleries off the beaten path. Adjacent to the ultradeveloped commercial thoroughfare of South State Street, the Funk Zone has an industrial appearance, but that’s part of the charm. For the highest concentration of tasting rooms, amble south along Anacapa Street and don’t stop ‘til you reach the ocean.
  • Where to stay. Hotel Indigo. You can easily access the Urban Wine Trail from here, starting with Kalyra Winery (located within a block of the hotel’s door). The hotel is also the proud home of the acclaimed Blue Tavern Restaurant, which serves Peruvian fare with a California twist.

Santa Barbara for Shoppers

  • State Street has all the stores you’d expect to find in an upscale urban shopping area, plus a handful of boutiques exuding SoCal style.
  • Don’t-miss boutiques. Diani (Rag Bone, Citizens of Humanity, Isabel Marant); The Area (affordable separates); Kitson (a celebrity favorite, with several California locations); and Lola Boutique (a luxury consignment store with some new designer items thrown in)
  • One-of-a-kind finds. While you’re on State, step into Antique Alley to browse an eclectic collection of 20th-century objects.
  • Where to stay. The Canary Hotel. After a day of shopping on State (one block away), you can sip margaritas while enjoying views of the mountains and ocean from the rooftop pool. Conde Nast Traveler readers ranked the Canary among the Top 25 Hotels in Southern California.

Santa Barbara for Families

  • See gorillas and anteaters at the Santa Barbara Zoo. It’s manageable in size—about 30 acres—so it won’t take up a whole day.
  • Learn about marine life at the Ty Warner Sea Center at Stearns Wharf, the city’s main pier.
  • Eat next to the ocean at Padaro Beach Grill. The prices are affordable and there’s a large sand pit where kids can play while parents savor the view.
  • See a drive-in movie at West Wind Drive-In in nearby Goleta. Admission is free for kids under 5 and only $1 for those aged 5–11.
  • Where to stay. The Franciscan Inn. Set just a block from the beach, the hotel has a pool, free breakfast, fresh-baked cookies every afternoon, a movie library, and free hot chocolate and coffee in the lobby.

Location right on the beach was perfect. It was nice to pick up a free cup of coffee in the reception and take a stroll on the beach to watch seals and birds before breakfast. The beachwalk is perfect.
