Hotels in bath

The Francis Hotel in Bath is a fine representation of the area as a whole: the building itself was built in the 19th Century and has recently been refurbished, allowing it to act as a luxurious stay right by the city centre. It’s just one of our hotels in Bath, however, so take a look below and see what stands out. Bath itself is a superb mix of old meets new. Older buildings make up a large portion of the city but they are gradually being met with modern luxury such as the Thermae Bath Spa. Sightseers wanting to see deep into the city’s history won’t want to miss the Roman baths museum, which is handily located right next to Bath Cathedral, another local landmark that is worthy of anyone’s attention. For visitors wanting to find out more about Bath during the Victorian era the Royal Crescent, The Circus and the Jane Austen Centre all make for excellent distractions to occupy you during your stay. Bath is easily accessible by train and road, with many links to nearby Bristol. The city also has a small waterway which can be navigated by small boats for visitors wanting a truly unique experience during their stay. Booking a hotel in Bath with AccorHotels couldn’t be easier. Simply browse our selection of hotels below and choose one that best suits your needs. Booking online with AccorHotels offers a host of benefits, including our Best Price Guarantee and last minute and real-time room availability.

One of the jewels of England, Bath’s Roman and Georgian history are everywhere, whether you want to simply enjoy being surrounded by some of the best architecture in the world or to more closely examine the city s fascinating past. Our pick of the best places to stay in Bath are mostly centrally located and all make an ideal base for exploring this beautiful city. For those who’d prefer an apartment, we recommend the selection from our online partner, Booking.com .

Sites such as the ravishing Pulteney Bridge which, like Florence s Ponte Vecchio, was designed for practicality as well as beauty with built in shops. It s the perfect place to visit if one of you prefers sipping cappuccinos to history.

The Roman Baths from which the city takes its name were built by the Romans around the only hot spring in Britain and are still filled with natural warm water. As well as audio guides in eight languages the admission fee includes guides specially for children in both English and French. Genius.

The Fashion Museum s 150 figures chart fashion from the late 16th century to the present day. There are exhibits of menswear, womenswear, day and evening wear and alternative fashion. You can even try on a crinoline at the Corsets and Crinolines display.

Bath is hilly which you should bear in mind if walking is a problem. It can be tricky for motorists too so if you are driving, it is advisable to make sure your hotel has parking.

This entrancing city has a vast choice of places to stay. There are dozens of smaller hotels in 18th century houses, handsome from the outside, though sometimes rather cramped within. And the historical vibe (Beau Brummel, Jane Austen, etc.) tempts some hoteliers to adopt a deadly repro/chintzy style. Beware.

But don’t forget that it’s very busy – year round! If you want to ensure a room in one of the best places to stay in Bath, you’ll need to plan ahead and book well in advance.

    Smaller Hotels

The following are small hotels which avoid camping up the history and are strongly recommended as some of the best places to stay in Bath.

    • Centrally yet quietly located, The Kennard boasts ornate decor and Jane Austen inspired garden. The helpful owners attention to detail and delicious breakfasts prepared with ingredients sourced from local farms make it deservedly popular.
    • Harrington’s Hotel is an excellent value option a stone’s throw from all the major attractions. It’s great for families too with a couple of self catering apartments across the road. Best of all, it’s got its own parking (albeit a couple of minutes walk away)!
    • The Queensberry is a chic privately owned townhouse hotel occupying several houses in a Georgian terrace. Smart and modern it is handy for the Fashion Museum being directly opposite the Assembly Rooms.
    • The Halcyon is a great choice if you want somewhere a bit funky and buzzy in the city centre. There is a cocktail bar and if you want to eat breakfast downstairs and not in bed you ll pay extra. As if.

Super smart places to stay in Bath

In the upper echelons of price and grandeur, competition is fierce and the Big Three; the Bath Priory, Bath Spa and Royal Crescent, have each splashed out heavily on spa facilities. All would also claim to be high up there amongst the best places to stay in Bath.

    • Highly recommended, is the Bath Priory. though it is just on the edge of the city and not in the centre. Decorated in traditional English country house style, it has an award-winning Michelin-starred restaurant, indoor and outdoor pools, glorious four acre gardens which also supply the kitchen with vegetables and extremely comfortable and luxurious rooms and bathrooms. Bath is quite small so the centre of the city is easily accessible from the hotel.
    • The well-known Royal Crescent hotel is hard to beat if you are planning a treat. Situated right in the middle of one of the most jaw-droppingly impressive pieces of architecture in Britain, there is little chance of waking up here and wondering where you are. Effortlessly combining traditional and modern interiors it is a classy delight both inside and out. And the fabulously grown-up spa is a child-free zone.
    • Of the three, the Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel can’t be ignored, but is hard to really love. Standing in seven acres of formal grounds, it is competent, imposing and slightly dull, though its spa facilities are excellent.

    Bright and Breezy Hospitality

With Beautiful Bath on your Doorstep

Harington’s City Hotel is independently owned by husband and wife duo – Peter and Melissa – who put hospitality at the heart of everything they do. Together, they have created a vibrant boutique hotel that’s cosy, relaxing and more than just a ‘bit out of the ordinary’.

Before you even cross the threshold you’ll understand that Harington’s is unusual. Why? Because it’s slap-bang in the centre of Bath and, being right at the heart of the city, you’d imagine it was noisy. You couldn’t be more wrong. Despite being just steps from the main shopping area, Harington’s is tucked away down a pretty cobbled street; the fact that it’s just off ‘Quiet Street’ speaks volumes (excuse the pun!) about what you can expect. Despite this, the hotel is so close to all the main attractions that we measure distances in ‘strolls’ rather than metric. To put this into context, Harington’s City Hotel is:

Less than two minute’s stroll from the Theatre Royal

Four minutes’ stroll from the Roman Baths

Three minutes’ stroll from the Bath Thermae Spa

Less than 1 minute’s stroll from Bath’s best shops and restaurants

Located in the oldest (and best) part of Bath, the Georgian townhouse is over 300 years old. Peter and Melissa have lovingly restored the handsome Grade II Listed building taking care to ensure it has all the hotel-style perks you’ll love, whilst retaining the period features and character that make Harington’s a special place. John Harington himself would be proud!

Whether you are coming to Bath on a romantic whiskaway, a sightseeing foray or a business trip, you’ll be glad you booked at Harington’s City Hotel. We are a warm and friendly team; always happy to help you discover the best local secrets.

“Lovely hotel. Great room. Let down by really poor breakfast – more like a 2 star than a 5 star hotel. “

    About the hotel

Once an elegant private house dating back to the 1830’s, a long sweeping driveway and seven acres of landscaped gardens front the Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel. Free wifi available in all public areas, meetings rooms and guest rooms. The 129 non-smoking bedrooms are furnished with a subtle blend of colours and maintain the atmosphere and appearance of a private house.

The Vellore Restaurant, once a ballroom and host to the season’s sparkling debutantes, offers traditional English fare in an elegant setting. The Alfresco Restaurant is the bustling colonnade restaurant, with views out across the formal garden. The style is less formal, eclectic and an oasis of enjoyment. A Mediterranean style menu is served. The Spa is a wonderful relaxing environment. The facilities include a Jacuzzi, Infra Red Heat Cabin, Rock Sauna, Experience Showers, Ice room, Aroma Steam and Salt Infusion rooms. There are 5 beauty treatment rooms and a relaxation room. In the fully equipped gymnasium, qualified instructors are on hand to offer lifestyle consultations. 5* Accommodation, 3* Service

The location and facilities are all great however, the service and access to facilities left much to be desired.

We were on a 3 day short break with a planned schedule, expecting to be able to book spa treatments but not possible as all therapists were booked up on the days that we could make. Breakfast was good but not exceptional food and the service in the dining room was chaotic, with staff cruising the room regularly but expert at avoiding eye contact. We and many in the room were left for long periods waiting for food to be delivered and for top ups to coffee, toast etc. The management appeared to be lax and there didn’t appear to be any particular server allocated to a group of tables, consequently, different servers brought food, orders were wrong, and a simple request for more toast took over 10 minutes to deliver on Thursday there was a queue for the restaurant at 9:00. 5* impossible to believe. on our invoice the following day, there was a note to say that Thursdays are busy Why. And why not pre-warn rather than let us know afterwards. We didn’t eat in the restaurant. it appeared to be very expensive and if the evening service were to be as the breakfast one, it wouldn’t have been a good experience. There are great and modestly priced restaurants locally, all easily bookable even in the high season. Finally, on our last but one day our bedroom was serviced, but not to a 5* standard. The bed was obviously hastily pulled together and tucked in. No cushions, no throw. Not acceptable. All of these issues seem to be management type ones which with a closer eye to detail and better organisation would not happen. So, 5* accommodation, 3* service. Not worth £215 a night. I’ve stayed in better at £85 a night.

    Macdonald Spa Hotel

Lovely welcoming hotel set in beautiful grounds.

Staff were all polite & happy. We were upgraded on arrival 2 Suites, which were lovely rooms. Good spa facilities. Good location for bath city centre.

    Bath hotels

Bath is an attractive city. Its elegant Georgian architecture and Roman spas have given the city World Heritage status; while its theatres, museums and sporting venues keep things current.

    Spa Therapy

Since the Romans set foot in the city, life revolved around the three geothermal springs and The Roman Baths built to reap the benefits of this natural phenomenon. Take a dip in the magnificent Great Bath and check out the view from the Terrace .

For more modern facilities, take a dip in the warm, mineral-rich waters at Thermae Bath Spa. Britain’s only natural thermal spa. Along with the natural hot springs, you’ll find several steam rooms, spa treatment options, and an open-air rooftop pool which offers panoramic views of Bath. You’ll find plenty of hotels in Central Bath if you want to be close to the baths and Bath Abbey.

    Elegant Architecture

The city’s elegant Georgian architecture includes the sweeping Royal Crescent and The Circus (a curve of impressive townhouses around a circular space), which are both worth a look. Meanwhile, medieval Bath Abbey never fails to impress visitors – spot the angels climbing up the stone ladder on the Abbey’s west side.

    Jane Austen’s Bath

Discover the effect Bath had on the writing of Jane Austen (one of the city’s most famous residents), at The Jane Austen Centre. Fans of the author will love this small museum, giving you a snapshot into life in Georgian England through costume, films and live guides. When you’re done you can grab tea and cake in the Regency Tea Rooms on the second floor.

    Spectacular for Sport

Sports fans can spend the afternoon or evening at Bath Racecourse. just outside the city centre at Lansdown Hill. If you’ve booked yourself a cheap Bath hotel, this is a great place to splash your spare cash. Along with the regular race fixtures, look out for special events held here including the Real Ale Festival Racenight and the glamorous Ladies Day. If you’re fanatical about football and rugby, why not catch a local game at Bath Rugby or Bath City Football Club .

    Show Time

Experience a unique atmosphere at the Theatre Royal Bath. one of the oldest working theatres in Britain (it’s also supposedly haunted). Choose from a programme of top drama, comedy opera, West-End productions and the annual Christmas pantomime. You can also enjoy dinner under the original vaults of this historic building at the Vaults Restaurant.

Is it possible to find a hotel in Bath combining old-fashioned attitudes to service and detail with sophisticated, modern comfort? The Queensberry Hotel, one of the most beautiful hotels in Bath, is run by a husband and wife Laurence Helen Beere who say yes, more than possible, it s positively desirable.

There are bigger, though not many more lovely, cities than Bath. There are bigger, though not many more lovely, hotels in Bath than The Queensberry, too, but with its beautiful design, slightly eccentric layout, stylish accommodation and air of relaxed, contemporary attention to detail it s not just the perfect boutique hotel from which to explore Bath, but somehow exemplifies it, too, as it s also small, attractive and the ideal spot for a gorgeous weekend

    For a city centre apartment

    • If you don’t think that any of our picks of hotels or B Bs fits the bill, how about an aparmtent? You can find a good selection with our online partner, Booking.com .
