Things to see in Blackpool

Sandcastle Waterpark, one of the UK’s largest indoor waterparks with more than 20 slides and attractions, is a firm favourite with the kids and guarantees hours of fun.

No trip to Blackpool is complete without a visit to Pleasure Beach. One of the most nostalgic of attractions, it features a number of old school rollercoasters amongst its collection of over 145 rides.

The Winter Gardens, opened in 1878, is an entertainment venue that offers a range of theatre, comedy, concerts, cinema and more throughout the year. We recommend checking the programme of events and booking a ticket well in advance of your visit to Blackpool, as it can get quite busy during the high-season.

Finally, there is the Blackpool Illuminations, which is the annual Blackpool light festival. It includes sculptures, light projections and live street performances, and it increases in magnitude with each year. The illuminations start in August and continue until the October half term, and it’s completely free of charge.

What and where to eat in Blackpool

Lovers of local culture can’t visit Blackpool without sampling some traditional fish and chips – battered or breadcrumbed cod and place served with a hefty helping of vinegar-drizzled deep-fried potatoes. Many of these classic chippys can be found along the beachfront promenade. A favourite is the excellent seafront Harry Ramsdens, which offers a range of fish all covered in light batter and complimented by thick chips.

Many of the hotels will offer their guests a full English breakfast, which usually consists of sausages, eggs, bacon, hash browns, fried tomatoes, baked beans toast and tea. It’s a great morning meal that will set you up nicely for a day of sightseeing and theme parks.

Feel the old-school glamour at luxury Blackpool hotels

The South Beach area of Blackpool offers a good range of boutique and five-star hotels, where stunning sea views, individually styled rooms and luxurious fittings mean you can easily relax after a fun-filled day. With attractions such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Sandcastle Waterpark right on your doorstep, you’ll probably be in need of a rest!

Another popular area to stay in Blackpool is North Shore, where you’ll find a cluster of luxury and mid-range hotels facing out towards the sea. These include the four-star Imperial Hotel – a grand redbrick Victorian hotel with its own spa and swimming pool – and reputable chains including Hilton and Best Western. This area is close to Blackpool Tower, North Shore Golf Club and Blackpool’s North Pier.

Enjoy pier-side attractions and bustling nightlife

In between South Beach and North Shore is the centre of town, which, unsurprisingly, is the place to stay if you like to be in the heart of the action. Close to popular attractions including the Central Pier, SEA LIFE and Madame Tussauds, it’s also where you’ll find many of Blackpool’s quirky themed hotels.

These are usually hidden behind the painted façade of a Victorian townhouse and appear relatively normal – until you step inside, that is. Fancy staying in a hostel with a rock ‘n’ roll theme or a B B adorned with Lord of the Rings figurines? How about a couples-only retreat complete with a Jacuzzi and a heart-shaped bed? Where else but in Blackpool…

Find fantastic value along the seafront

Blackpool gets some stick for its cheap-as-chips guestrooms and B Bs, but if you’re looking for wallet-friendly accommodation situated a stone’s throw from the beach, you’ll find a warm welcome waiting for you in the city’s budget hotels and B Bs.

You’ll find countless examples of Blackpool’s cheap ‘n’ cheerful B Bs lined up along the seafront and tucked away behind the resort’s backstreets. Many offer a hearty fried breakfast in the morning and family-friendly entertainment in the evening, ranging from karaoke nights to cabaret acts.

  • Hotels in Blackpool – The Las Vegas of Britain

A favourite destination of the British, Blackpool represents a British seaside holiday in all its glory. It has a long-standing reputation for summer fun, flashing lights and frolics. Book a nice hotel in Blackpool for a terrific bit of domestic vacationing with endless delights on offer.

    Hotels in Blackpool

Places to stay in Blackpool – Popular areas

For those searching for peace and quiet, the North Shore is a fantastic option. The North offers a good range of hotels outside of the noise of the Blackpool city centre. In addition, the excellent tram service makes it very easy to get to the beach and the amusement parks.

The town centre offers plenty of shopping opportunities during the day and a vibrant nightlife when the sun goes down. This is the perfect place for anyone looking to socialise into the wee hours, especially during the weekend.

Another option would be to stay in hotels near Blackpool. St, Anne’s and Lytham are both relatively close to Blackpool and offer more budget friendly accommodation in the form of holiday flats. Blackpool is easily reached via the efficient bus service, and both locations have their own beaches and other facilities in case the lights of Blackpool become a bit too bright. For any of your Blackpool breaks, take the time to book in advance to get a good deal.

From cheap to family friendly to luxury, hotels in Blackpool offers plenty of accommodation types to fit your needs. Use our tool at the top of this page to search for, and filter hotels according to location, price and guest rating.

Ice cream stalls are abundant in the summer months, and nothing beats walking along the beach with a cone filled with soft vanilla ice cream and garnished with a chocolate flake bar. Just ask for a ‘99’.

    When to visit Blackpool

For those that prefer cooler weather, spring can be ideal as it brings fresh breezes, very light rain and warm sun. This is a perfect time for a romantic walk along the pier. For cheap Blackpool hotels, travel in spring, and see the flowers come out in bloom in the city’s public parks.

Cooler weather usually begins late October and carries through to February. However, this is the time that Blackpool truly comes to light with the Blackpool Illuminations, one of the highlights of the year. It finishes in mid-November to make room for the twinkling lights of Christmas, making Blackpool a good travel destination even during winter. During the cold winter months, the city erupts with festive activities – from craft markets to the Christmas lights celebration.

    Travel in Blackpool

It’s a good idea to get a Blackpool1 ticket for the best value; it covers both trams and buses. These can be bought directly on the buses, or at Travel shops on Market Street. Different length tickets are on offer from simple day passes, three-day weekend or even a full week.

    Trinity Hospice Blackpool

The mission statement of Trinity Hospice is: “Compassionate care on the journey to the end of life.” Recognising that this journey is challenging and unique for every individual the Directors and Board of Trustees identified an opportunity to facilitate conversations with patients and carers through the use of commissioned bespoke artwork to be hung in their ecumenical and interfaith Hospice Chapel in 2010. The aim was to create a space that enabled people to reflect, acknowledge and if needed express their complex emotions using the paintings as prompts.

To try and devise a series of large paintings in this chapel, which would help those who seek refuge with in it, was a difficult and demanding artistic challenge. In approaching this commission I asked the following questions. What do the staff and carers do in this hospice? What are the patients and loved ones feeling and thinking? What is it to be a human being?
I decided to choose the theme of The Dance, inspired by the well-known hymn Lord of the Dance. Each of the oil paintings was of a dancing figure in different poses. All seven paintings reflect different aspects of the experience of living with, or caring for someone with a life limiting illness. A leaflet of reflections is provided that people can use if they wish to help them interpret the paintings. The images can be seen on the BBC website.

I am Rev David Shaw the hospice chaplain At Trinity in the Fylde. I would simply like to say that I think the paintings in our chapel are beautiful, inspired, powerful, and a very valuable addition to the spiritual life of the hospice. As the future unfolds they will I am sure be an inspiration to many patients and staff.

Thank you for your work.Every Blessing. David

We had the great joy 2 days ago of seeing your paintings in the chapel at Trinity Hospice. We both found them overwhelmingly beautiful and moving, and so full of inspiration and hope.
During the last year I have been diagnosed and treated for cancer. I only wish the paintings had been in place throughout the year. We ve both been in the same place as Lost at the low times.Thank God we ve also known some of the uplift and joy of the journey you depict; mainly through the love and support of friends and the marvellous people who staff the hospital and the hospice services.
In all we ve read and all that has been said to us this year, nothing has encapsulated so well as The Dance the message of hope we ve needed, and still need, to experience.
Thank you from both of us. Brian Anne Robbins

A letter in the local paper. April 2010
I would like to let you know how I feel about the pictures on the walls in Trinity Hospice.Today is a very sad day, for 13 years ago I lost my much-loved mum. She was 57 and her life was cut short. On this day every year I take that dreaded journey down to the hospice to see my mum s name Glenis Johnson in the book of remembrance. My mother entered the hospice five times and came home, but sadly the last time her battle was lost.
As I sat in the chapel today, thinking about the room around the corner that my mum took her last breath in, I looked upon the walls and couldn t believe the story the pictures told.
The artist Penny Warden has certainly put into pictures the journey of cancer, how it makes you feel, what battles you face, how each day is precious, how you cope and how you protect the ones closest to you.
I could have sat there all day, taking in the images and putting my journey with cancer to each and every painting.
It s already beautiful and peaceful at the hospice, but today I left there with a greater understanding. So thank you to the hospice, thank you to Penny Warden, and thank you to my beautiful mum, who I miss every second of the day.

One patient who was in the last few days of his life chose to go to the chapel every afternoon to sit with his family and the paintings because he felt they spoke to him of his own journey. His wife comments, “For those few hours he comes alive and finds a peace he does not find anywhere else”

Please can you spread the word about what a wonderful experience I had to others, who may just want a place to go and sit, and work out where their journey starts and ends.

Penny Warden is a unique and truly original contemporary British artist, known for her distinctive, expressive style. Influenced by ‘action painting’ she paints with maximum spontaneity and energetic expression. Her figurative paintings are created in a radical and exciting way, with vibrant colours splashed and thrown in an arbitrary, though deliberate manner. The resulting figures are full of movement, emotion and drama. Penny s work has appeared in many high-profile locations and galleries across London and the UK. Her public commissions can be seen on the BBC website.
