Should I Earn a Hospitality Management Degree?

Updated May 10, 2017

A hospitality management degree is an academic degree awarded to students who have finished a college, university, or business school program with a focus on hospitality management. Students in this specialization study the hospitality industry, or more specifically the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of the hospitality industry. The hospitality industry is a service industry and includes sectors like travel and tourism, lodging, restaurants, bars.

Do You Need a Hospitality Management Degree?

A degree is not always required to work in the hospitality management field. There are many entry-level positions that require nothing more than a high school diploma or the equivalent. However, a degree can give students an edge and may be especially helpful in securing more advanced positions.

Hospitality Management Curriculum

Although curriculum can vary depending on the level you are studying at as well as the hospitality management program you attend, there are some subjects you can expect to study while earning your degree. Among them are food safety and sanitation, operations management. marketing, customer service, hospitality accounting, purchasing, and cost control.

Types of Hospitality Management Degrees

There are four basic types of hospitality management degrees that can be earned from a college, university, or business school:

  • Associate Degree in Hospitality Management – An associate degree program in hospitality management typically includes general education courses as well as several classes devoted specifically to hospitality management. These programs usually take two years to complete. After earning an associate degree, you could seek entry-level employment in the hospitality management field or go on to pursue a bachelor degree in hospitality management or a related area.
  • Bachelor Degree in Hospitality Management – If you have not already earned an associate degree, a bachelor degree program in hospitality management will take approximately four years to complete. You may take a core set of general education courses in addition to courses focused on hospitality management.
  • Master Degree in Hospitality Management – A master degree in hospitality management rarely includes general education courses. However, you can expect to take core courses focused on your major, and you may have the opportunity to choose your electives so that you can specialize in a particular area of hospitality management. Most master programs take two years to complete, but one-year programs do exist at some business schools.
  • Doctorate Degree in Hospitality Management – A doctorate degree program in hospitality management involves a great deal of research as well as a thesis. These programs usually take three to five years to complete, though program length can vary depending on the school as well as the degrees you have already earned.

Hospitality Management Career Options

There are many different types of careers that can be pursued with a hospitality management degree. You could choose to become a general manager. You may also decide to specialize in a particular area, such as lodging management, food service management, or casino management. Some other options may include opening your own restaurant, working as an event planner, or pursuing a career in travel or tourism.

Once you have some experience in the hospitality industry, it is definitely possible to move up to more advanced positions.

You can also move around within the industry. For example, you could work as a lodging manager and then switch over to something like restaurant management or event management with relative ease.

Job Titles for Hospitality Management Grads

Some popular job titles for people who hold a hospitality management degree include:

  • Lodging Manager – Lodging managers supervise the operations of hotels, motels, and other types of resorts. They may work as general managers, revenue managers, front office managers, or convention area managers.
  • Restaurant Manager – Restaurant managers (sometimes known as food service managers) supervise restaurant operations. They may own the restaurant or work for someone else. Responsibilities may include overseeing food safety, hiring and firing staff, ordering inventory, monitoring labor and inventory costs, marketing and advertising, and restaurant accounting.

Grammar Tip of the Day

Discover grammar tips, writing help, and fun English language facts.

  • Casino Manager – Casino managers oversee casino operations. They may work as general managers, gaming supervisors, food service managers, customer relations managers, or convention managers.
  • Cruise Director – Cruise directors oversee operations on a cruise ship. Their responsibilities may include activity planning, scheduling, public announcements, and performing concierge-type services.
  • Concierge – A concierge works at a special desk in the hotel. Their primary objective is to keep customers happy. This may involve making reservations, sharing information about the hotel, securing items a hotel guest needs, and resolving complaints.
  • Travel Agent – Travel agents help people plan vacations. They typically perform research and make reservations on their client s behalf. Travel agents may work as independent contractors. They can also work for existing travel agencies.

Joining a Professional Organization

Joining a professional organization is a good way to get more involved in the hospitality industry. This is something you can do before or after earning your hospitality management degree. One example of a professional organization in the hospitality industry is the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), a national association representing all sectors of the lodging industry. Members include hospitality management students, hoteliers, property managers, university faculty, and others with a stake in the hospitality industry. The AHLA site offers information about careers, education, and much more.

Bachelor of Science (BS): Human Services Degree Overview

Career Options

Bachelor of Science programs in human services can translate to a variety of careers. Among them are social and human service assistants, social and community service managers, and social workers.

Social and Human Service Assistants

Social and human service assistants offer support to those who are experiencing trying times. They might locate specific community services or assistance programs for residents or assist individuals who need help with bathing or eating.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that jobs for social and human service assistants are expected to grow 11% from 2014-2024. A May 2015 report from the BLS showed that the annual median salary for these workers was $30,830, with most workers earning $20,120-$49,570 (www.bls.gov ).

Social and Community Service Managers

These professionals coordinate and direct social services programs. They oversee social workers and other staff and prepare program budgets.

Employment was expected to expand by 10% during the 2014-2024 decade. The median annual salary for social and community service managers was $63,530 in May 2015.

Social Workers

Social workers help people by investigating crisis situations or diagnosing behavioral or mental problems. They research and identify community services for their clients who need child care, medical services or food stamp assistance.

The BLS predicted a growth rate of 12% between 2014 and 2024. In 2015, social workers received a median annual salary of $58,560.

Degree Overview

Most human services degree programs teach students about real-world applications of human services programs, as well as the administrative side of running these programs. To gain an understanding of how human services programs work, students first learn about different populations in need, such as the mentally and physically disabled, children, the elderly and low-income families. Next, students might take classes on potential human services programs, including criminal justice, emergency medical, child development, health services and community outreach.

After receiving instruction on various programs and populations, students learn to deal with individual clients. To train students to talk with clients in a professional manner, human services degree programs provide courses in behavioral psychology, interpersonal relationships, intervention strategies and counseling. Other core classes provide training on the fundamentals of running human services programs, including research methodologies and statistics, public service management, program funding and legal issues related to human services.

Concentration Options

Since students who have a degree in human services can go on to multiple career paths, most degree programs allow students to specialize by choosing career path-based electives or degree concentrations. For example, students interested in helping the mentally disabled might choose elective courses focusing on social psychology, child psychology, psychological disorders or mental health institutions. Alternatively, students who want to work in social reform programs might choose courses related to social services and non-profit organizations.

Training Experience

Many human services degree programs require students to gain real-world experience through internship and externship programs. Usually, these programs last for 1-2 semesters, although students can elect to participate in additional internship opportunities. Through these experiences, students learn how human services professionals work with other industries, how to evaluate individual cases and how to work with various populations in need.

While obtaining an assistant position in human services will not require a bachelor’s degree, professionals desiring to advance their careers (and subsequent income) will want to pursue a 4-year degree to secure positions as social workers and counselors or as human services managers. They can choose from a number of concentrations and gain experience through internships and externship programs.

Why Major in Criminal Justice?

The criminal justice degree program provides a combined training and criminal justice education package to prepare men and women for a professional career in the criminal justice system.

Acceptance into the criminal justice bachelor degree program (junior/senior level) is on a competitive basis, as space permits.

The criminal justice degree program provides two primary entry points: (1) to accommodate criminal justice students who wish to complete all four years at Ferris; and (2) college criminal justice students who transfer into the Ferris State criminal justice degree program with an associate degree criminal justice or its equivalent.

Criminal Justice College Graduates Get Great Jobs

The criminal justice degree program at Ferris State has three options: law enforcement specialist; criminal justice corrections; or criminal justice generalist. Depending upon the criminal justice major or cj program option chosen, Criminal Justice degree students study criminal justice subjects such as administration of police units, police laboratory techniques, collection of evidence, the role of police in forming community opinion, cause and prevention of juvenile delinquency, criminal justice theory and practice of handling convicted law violators, probation and parole, criminal justice processes and problems, crime control policy, and the role of law enforcement in American society.

During the summer internship between the junior and senior years, the Criminal Justice degree students are assigned to a cooperating criminal justice agency for practical experience in a criminal justice internship program.

Bachelor’s Degree Criminal Justice Admission Requirements

College students who major in criminal justice by enrolling in the criminal justice degree program prior to the junior level enroll in the Pre-Criminal Justice curriculum. Completion of the Pre-Criminal Justice degree program does not guarantee acceptance into the criminal justice bachelor degree program. The bachelors degree in Criminal Justice is awarded for successful completion of 128-134 semester credit hours of coursework. These criminal justice degree credit hours are a combination of the 63-64 credit hours as required in the first two years as a criminal justice major (or an equivalent from another college) and the 64-67 semester credit hours required in the junior and senior years at Ferris State. Graduation from the college criminal justice degree program requires a minimum 2.5 GPA for the law enforcement specialist option. Graduation from the criminal justice degree in the criminal justice corrections and generalist options requires a minimum 2.0 GPA.

College Degree Criminal Justice Graduation Requirements

Graduates from the Criminal Justice degree program must complete all of Ferris State general education requirements as outlined in the General Education section of the criminal justice course catalog, and have an ACT math sub score of 24, or complete MATH 115 or pass the Math proficiency exam.
