Had Your Credit Card Hacked Lately?

My credit card information was just stolen — again. This is the fifth time in the past three years, which, if polling my Facebook friends is any indication, is about par for the course. It happens to everyone, it seems, about once every nine months. And for the record, each time I was hacked, my credit card was still physically in my possession.

There’s no need to tell you what a pain in the ass this is, but I will anyway. You have to switch all direct billings from the old card to a new card — and you invariably forget a few which means you get dinged with late fees. You also have to update all those online shopping sites where you have your credit card info stored. And of course you have to check all three credit scoring sites to see if the theft is causing you any lingering damage. In terms of inconvenience, credit card theft is just one Dante circle removed from losing your whole wallet and having to cancel and replace everything.

The good news is that none of my five thefts have cost me a penny, for which I am very grateful. And in four of the five instances, it was Chase — my credit card provider — that discovered the fraud and told me about it. I hadn’t had a clue.

In all five cases, Chase closed my account, issued me a new one on the spot and sent me new cards overnight. I get the idea that they have an Amazon-size warehouse full of customer service reps who do nothing all day but close accounts that have been infiltrated by thieves.

In my most recent theft, most of the charges were made in Tokyo and they included a dating app, some junk food bought in a mini-mart, and a bunch of other small purchases. The way credit card thieves frequently work is to first test the waters with small purchases to see if they go undetected before they try to charge something larger — you know, felony-like larger. In my case, it was a stay in an expensive hotel in Beverly Hills. Nope, I told the helpful Chase rep, I’ve never been to Japan or an expensive hotel in Beverly Hills.

I can’t complain about Chase’s fraud detection unit; they seem to be right on top of things. But what I don’t get is why this keeps happening and why there doesn’t appear to be much of an effort to catch the bad guys. And I certainly don’t mean to single out Chase. Credit card fraud is an equal opportunity crime. No one is immune and it certainly doesn’t matter which lender you have although different cards hold you to different levels of liability.

Given the prevalence of the problem, where’s the prosecution? For the number of thefts to be this widespread, doesn’t it mean that people see this as a crime that’s easy to get away with?

The Nilson Report puts credit and debit card fraud at $11.27 billion in losses in 2012. That’s certainly nothing to sneeze at.

In fact, credit card fraud — along with national security as it relates to terrorism and identity theft — are the top two things we most worry about, says Unisys. Almost 40 percent of us were deeply concerned about the security of shopping and banking online.

How are these thieves doing it? Sometimes they just outfox you, technologically. They install skimmers in ATMs or at gas station pumps when no one is around that record credit card information surreptitiously. The information is later resold to criminals who create counterfeit
cards or charge items over the phone or the Internet.

Other times, though, it is simply you being careless. So what can you do about it (besides paying cash for everything)?

1. Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder when you are paying with a credit card in stores. The Department of Justice’s website says that this is a still a common way to steal credit card numbers. It’s easy to get distracted.

2. Lower your voice, or better yet, keep your mouth shut.
Limit what you say on your mobile phone in public. Thieves get ahold of people’s credit card numbers by listening to cardholders’ conversations with hotel or rental car companies, according to the Department of Justice. Instead of holding those conversations within earshot, move to a quiet place. Never recite your credit card information in a busy lobby or from the back of a cab.

3. Get a home shredder.
Yes, it’s come to that. Destroy every check and credit card or bank statement before throwing them in the trash. Some thieves are dumpster divers, says the DOJ. It only takes one stray receipt to give a criminal all the access he or she needs.

4. Watch where you eat.
Dishonest wait staff have been known to use hidden or handheld devices to copy your credit card for later counterfeiting. They are often tied to a local crime ring, or seasonal and transient workers, said KrebsonSecurity.com .

Advance Fee Fraud

The Scam . The con artist sends a letter or email — purportedly only to a few recipients but actually to several thousand — making an offer that would result in a large payoff for the victim. The details vary, but generally the story is that a person, often the wife or son of a deposed African dictator, knows about some unclaimed fortune that they are willing to share with the scam victim in return for an advanced fee (e.g. bail money for the imprisoned millionaire). Once money starts coming in, the con artist will continue asking for more, claiming that problems have arisen. How To Protect Yourself . Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Visa Signature® Card Review

Large bonus for Hilton hotels

The Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Visa Signature® Card is the best way to earn bonus points at Hilton Hotels. Cardholders will earn an amazing six points per dollar spent at hotels in the Hilton Worldwide Portfolio. This portfolio consists of several luxury, full-service and focused-service hotel chains. If you find yourself on the road often and prefer hotels associated with the Hilton family, you ll find your bonus points will pile up quickly.

Great introductory bonus

The Hilton HHonors™ card will reward cardholders with 40,000 points if you spend $1,000 in the first four months of card ownership. Introductory bonuses are fairly common with travel rewards credit cards, but when compared to other competitor cards, the large number of bonus points, low spending requirements, and relatively long time allotted to meet the conditions make the Hilton HHonors™ bonus particularly attractive.

Diverse ways to earn points

In addition to the high number of bonus points associated with staying at Hilton hotels, the Hilton HHonors™ card offers competitive bonuses connected with other purchases. Cardholders will appreciate earning three points for every dollar spent at supermarkets, drugstores, and gas stations, and two points per dollar on every other purchase. Some rewards cards limit the ways you can earn bonus points to very specific products. With the HHonors™ credit card, your earning options are much more diverse.

No annual fee

With all of the bonus rewards options offered by the HHonors™ card, a high annual fee could probably be justified, but one of the great features of the Hilton HHonors™ credit card is that there is no annual fee. If you re looking for a travel credit card with competitive rewards and no annual fee, the HHonors™ card will be a strong candidate.

Visa Signature® benefits

Holders of the Hilton HHonors™ card are eligible to receive all the additional benefits associated with the Visa Signature® card. These far-reaching benefits include things like roadside assistance, lost luggage insurance, travel insurance, fraud protection, emergency assistance, and more.

The Bad

Limited redemption options

Although the Hilton HHonors™ card does offer great travel-related redemption benefits like hotels, airfare, and car rentals, when compared with other travel rewards cards, the redemption options fall a bit short. Some competitor cards offer more comprehensive rewards that include travel, as well as things like cash back and gift cards.

Foreign currency transaction fee

For a rewards card that promotes travel, you might be surprised to find fees associated with foreign currency transactions. The HHonors™ card does come with a 3% transaction fee on all foreign currency transactions. Although this may not be a deal-breaker, it is definitely something to consider if you find yourself traveling internationally on a regular basis.

PCI Compliance Made Easy!

More Info

PCI Compliance

Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance can seem daunting. That’s why every day we receive questions from dozens of terrified business owners about what responsibilities a small merchant has when it comes to compliance.

It doesn’t matter how many transactions a company does, it is a sure shot that PCI compliance applies to you, your business, and every company that collects, transmits, processes or stores cardholder information. This includes point-of-sale (POS) terminals (remember the Target hack?), e-commerce and even the lonely mail/phone orders.

PCI DSS is not a federal law or a state law. Rather, it’s a security standard developed by the the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). The council is composed of credit card bigwigs such as American Express, Discover, MasterCard, Visa, and JCB.

PCI SSC developed the Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), a comprehensive security standard that acts as a set of guidelines for merchants to ensure the protection of their customer’s sensitive card data. The industry regulations were put in place on June of 2005, in a secret cave. The PCI SSC enforces the security standard with corporal punishment and/or fines (but really just fines). It applies to any company that accepts credit cards in any form (except for a hologram projection). If your company stores, processes, or transmits any of the information recorded on a credit or debit card then you are required to be PCI compliant or face serious consequences such as:

  1. Compensation to regain lost trust. Sometimes after the general public has lost faith in your company, the only way to get them back is with bribes.
  2. Legal fees. The world is quick to sue. If you suffer a security breach prepare for lawsuits to follow.
  3. Bank fines. If you’re not PCI Compliant and you suffer a security breach your merchant bank is going to come down on you for every customer who they had to reimburse after the theft or fraud.
  4. Federal audits. The FTC might get involved if you’re company is one of the big players. They might audit you from that point until eternity and throw in a few fines while they’re at it.
  5. Cleanup. Chances are that you’ll have to investigate the security breach, hire or fire employees and up your security.
  6. Profits will fall. After the internet finds out about your security breach nobody is going to come near your business for a long while. Remember, many large companies have declared bankruptcy after a security breach. Target’s profits fell $440 million in their fourth fiscal quarter following their POS security breach in 2013.
  7. Google will haunt you. Even a decade after your security breach, everytime someone Googles your name, chances are one of the breach headlines will surface. If your company was once a bright, shining success in the eCommerce world, it certainly isn’t anymore.
  8. Angry witches will beat you with broomsticks. As a merchant it is your responsibility to protect consumer credit card data and any other data you collect. This could include:
  • Card readers
  • POS systems
  • Store networks and wireless access routers
  • Credit card storage and transmission
  • E-commerce applications and web services
  • Phone numbers from over-zealous, flirtatious, househusbands or housewives.

The PCI DSS standards are in place to give merchants, like you, a step by step list of what you need to do to meet compliance standards so that you’re not schooled by the terrifying PCI SSC humans. This standard consists of 12 requirements that are fairly direct in their instructions on what one must do to be compliant (it no longer involves a riddle and a troll named rumpelstiltskin). What’s more, the PCI Security Standards Council even explains why you should put each of the requirements in place. Get a copy of the PCI DSS 3.0 requirements at https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/security_standards/index.php. It is also required that your business maintains current compliance at all times. Small merchants can do this by filling out an annual self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ) and fulfilling any other compliance validation requirements set by their merchant bank such as Security Scanning to PCI Compliance. It’s very easy to “fall out of” compliance; for example, failing a PCI Security Scan, forgetting to renew malware, etc. If at any time your business is not in complete compliance, your business will be liable should you suffer a security breach. The PCI SSC will come for you. They’re like the Russian mafia, only not at all. Still, you don’t want to get on their bad side.

The ability to accept credit cards is absolutely necessary for business owners to conduct business regardless of size. Losing the privilege to process cards could mean bankruptcy for even the largest corporation. You don’t want your children to end up like that little orphan girl in Annie (the original, not the remake), so please, make sure you’re compliant.

Private Label Credit Card

What is a ‘Private Label Credit Card’

A private label credit card is a store-branded credit card that can only be used at that store. A private-label credit card is a type of revolving credit plan managed by a bank or commercial finance company for either retail or wholesale manufacturers, such as department and specialty stores. Private label credit cards do not carry a credit card logo such as Visa or Mastercard and cannot be used with other merchants.

The private label credit program allows retailers to offer more lenient and extended terms to customers than they could otherwise. Many stores offer private label credit cards to their customers to encourage them to spend more by offering the convenience of a credit card and deferred payment. In addition, when a customer makes a purchase with a private label credit card, they will usually earn loyalty rewards, such as a discount on a future purchase. In this way, a private label credit card can encourage repeat business and customer loyalty. Private label cards can also make shopping more convenient for customers through features such as receiptless returns.

BREAKING DOWN ‘Private Label Credit Card’

If a third party. such as a bank, manages a private-label credit program for a retailer or manufacturer, it will perform several functions. These include the issuance of cards, funding of credit and the collection of payments from customers. The criteria for credit are jointly established by the service provider and the retailer.

Private label credit cards are similar to other credit cards in that they charge interest if you carry a balance, charge a fee if your payment is late and have a grace period if you don’t carry a balance. They are also similar to other credit cards in that while private label credit cards do not carry a payment processor’s logo, they are still backed by a payment processor such as Visa. The payment processor makes it easy for stores to offer private label credit cards by offering cards that work with the store’s existing terminals and point-of-sale equipment.

Target is one of many retailers that offers a private label credit card as of 2014. Called the RedCard, it gives consumers 5% off all purchases at the point of sale. free shipping on all online purchases and an extra 30 days on top of the usual 90-day return window to get a refund for unwanted purchases. Similarly, Nordstrom offers a private label credit card that gives customers $20 off a $100 purchase on the day they apply plus points on each purchase that can be redeemed for future discounts. Target and Nordstrom also each offer Visa cards that offer store-specific benefits and can be used anywhere Visa is accepted.

How to Dispute Visa Debit Charges #dispute #charge #on #debit #card

#

How to Dispute Visa Debit Charges

A Visa debit card is a convenient, easy-to-use alternative to credit cards. Unlike a credit card, your Visa debit card is connected to a bank account. Thus, the amount you spend using the debit card is limited to the amount you have in your bank account. Like a credit card, though, Visa does offer some protection to users of its debit card. In fact, according to Visa s Zero Liability guarantee, you will be protected from any fraudulent charges associated with your debit card.

It s important that you report any incorrect charges to your debit card as soon as possible.

Step

Call the place of business if you authorized the transaction but discovered that you were overcharged or charged for the same item multiple times. Often, if you re able to prove the error, most businesses will take steps to correct the problem. If the business is unable or unwilling to remedy the problem or if you re dealing with an unauthorized transaction, proceed to Step 2.

Step

Call the bank or financial institution that issued the Visa debit card. Be prepared to give your name, account number and detailed explanation of the problem. If your card has been stolen or lost, you will need to cancel the debit card.

Step

Fill out any paperwork required by the bank/financial institution. The type and amount of paperwork will vary from bank to bank. In most instances, though, you will need to make a trip to the bank in order to complete the forms in person. If your card has been stolen and you re experiencing fraudulent charges, you may even be advised to fill out a police report.

Step

Wait. Visa will have up to 60 days to investigate your claim. Usually, you will receive a credit for the amount of the disputed charge within a few days of the claim. If your claim is upheld, you will be permitted to keep the credit. If, however, Visa denies your claim, you will lose the credit.

How to Apply for a Credit Card Without a Social Security Number

With so many websites offering free financial tools, it can be hard to know whom to trust. At NerdWallet, we spend literally 1,000s of hours researching partner offers and following strict editorial integrity to match you with the perfect choice. We even share how we make money so you can enjoy our expert advice and researched recommendations with total clarity and confidence.

Not having a Social Security number is a serious stumbling block when you want to apply for a credit card. since most financial institutions strongly prefer that you supply one on your application. However, there are ways to get a credit card without a Social Security number.

An alternative identification number

Although credit card issuers almost always ask for your Social Security number on your application, you’re “generally not required” to provide one if you don’t have one, according to the Social Security Administration.

In general, only U.S. citizens and noncitizens authorized to work in the U.S. are eligible for a Social Security number. Others can obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, which follows the same nine-digit format as a Social Security number (XXX-XX-XXXX) and can be used in place of one on credit card applications. You can obtain an ITIN regardless of your immigration status.

You ll need more than a number for approval

Simply having a taxpayer ID number to put on a credit card application isn t enough to guarantee that you ll be approved. Credit card issuers will also look at your credit history, and that creates an entirely different challenge.

If you don t have a Social Security number, it s most likely because you re not an American citizen. Even if you had a positive credit history in your country of origin, foreign credit history can’t be transferred to the United States. As far as American credit card issuers are concerned, you have no credit history at all.

You may need to start building your U.S. credit history by applying for a secured credit card. With these cards, you provide a deposit, usually $200 or more, that the issuer holds in case you don t pay your bill. In most cases, your deposit becomes your credit limit — put down a $500 deposit, for example, and your credit limit is $500. There are also a few companies that offer credit cards specifically for recent immigrants and international students.

Good behavior means good credit

Can you even begin to build credit without a Social Security number? The answer is yes. The credit bureaus will use other information about you, such as your name, address and birth date, to gather information about your credit activity all in one place.

To build good credit, you’ll need to show positive payment history over time. This means making regular purchases and paying off your balance on time every month.

It takes about six months of credit activity for a FICO credit score to be created. Once you have a FICO score — the score most commonly used by lenders to determine your creditworthiness — you may find a wider variety of credit cards available to you. You could move up to an unsecured credit card (one that doesn t require a deposit) and eventually cards that offer juicy rewards .

BSC Toolkit for Hotel

Do you run a business in the hotel industry? Would you like to monitor and improve your business’s performance with special metrics? If so, then you need to know about the BSC Toolkit for Hotels.

Any business can benefit from using a Balanced Scorecard with well-designed Key Performance Indicators (or, KPIs). But succeeding in the hotel industry calls for different indicators than most other industries.

For instance, a good hotelier might focus on guest satisfaction, staff efficiency, and quality leisure services, rather than supply chain management or contractor availability.

So, the BSC Toolkit for Hotels starts with 18 complete Balanced Scorecards. including 298 Key Performance Indicators all designed specifically to quantify the factors that matter most in hotel management.

The scorecards in the toolkit fall into four broad categories:

  • General Hotel Management, including your help desk, HR, and facilities departments.
  • Competitor Analysis, including benchmarking and market research.
  • Hotel Clients, including customer value perceptions, loyalty, and profitability.
  • Leisure Services, including tennis, skiing, golf, and swimming pools.

Each scorecard combines 12 to 16 KPIs to give you a clear, accurate picture of your hotel’s performance in one of these specific areas. Using these indicators, your CEO can define strategic goals for the whole company, and then delegate complete scorecards with appropriate KPIs to lower-level managers in each department. That means all of your business units will be able to work together to meet your goals, track your business performance, and help the company grow. These balanced scorecards can even show you where you may need to invest additional resources to keep your company’s progress on track.

More guides and recommendations

But that’s only the beginning. The BSC Toolkit for Hotels also includes twenty-five recommendations for improvements that are proven to add value for guests and increase productivity for hotels. Each recommendation includes an analysis of how and why this new feature will improve your productivity, and a step-by-step implementation strategy to help you put it into practice in your hotel.

I decided to listen to the voice message before we went in for the show. As I heard the words your bank account has suspicious activity on it, I got a little worried but figured Bank of America simply didn t like one of the transactions we had made earlier. So, I quickly took a look at our checking account transactions on the Bank of America iPhone app. That s when my stomach shot up into my throat and my heart started racing. I saw two $1,000 deductions from our account for a shady sounding website that we definitely didn t buy anything from. Our bank account had been compromised, and we were devastated.

The bank told us that the transactions were made using my debit card number. However, the strange thing is that my debit card number was never lost or stolen. Luckily, Bank of America was great about the whole situation and, since you are never liable for unauthorized transactions in your bank account. the money was put back in our account within three business days.

No one ever confirmed this, but given the number of incidences in Orlando over the past year, I am convinced that my debit card was skimmed. I can t pinpoint where exactly it happened, but I have no other explanation since we rarely buy things online, and no websites have our debit card number stored.

How Card Skimming Happens

Here are four of the most likely ways that your credit or debit card can be skimmed:

  1. ATMs An ATM skimming device is used and fits over the real ATM card reader slot. ATM users do not know their information is being intercepted as their card is inserted into the false reader.
  2. Gasoline Pumps This skimming device is installed inside a gas pump in minutes and is not visible to users. A gas pump key can fit pump housings in multiple stations, allowing for quick and easy access. I think this could have been where my card was skimmed. I get gas in a lot of tourist areas around Orlando where criminals are more likely to go after the pumps.
  3. Handheld Devices Someone can take your credit card and quickly record the information with a swipe on these small devices. There were two different cases in Orlando recently of waitresses at restaurants swiping cards with these handheld machines. They were being paid a nominal, flat fee for every card they recorded by a middle man who was then selling them on the black market for big money. Think about it, when you send your credit or debit card off with a restaurant server, it s one of the only times your card is out of your sight and not in your possession.
  4. Keystroke Loggers This device can be attached to public-use computers, like those found at the library, or credit card point-of-sale devices to record passwords and other personal data. They can also be downloaded onto your computer as malicious spyware.

Maybe I am being a little paranoid. I could never actually confirm that my card was skimmed. However, through researching credit card skimming in Orlando, I found quite a few instances of people caught targeting areas near where I live and work.

How to Avoid Skimming Fraud

I am convinced that this crime is a real threat. If you agree, here are some tips on how to avoid being a victim of credit card skimming and, ultimately, identity theft and financial fraud.

  • Go to the Bank Window If you re going to a bank during office hours, go into the bank and make a withdrawal, or drive up to the teller window rather than taking money out at the ATM.
  • Get Cash Back Take advantage of the ability to get cash back at a grocery store instead of taking money out at an ATM.
  • Pay Inside for Gas Paying for gas at the pump is convenient, but not convenient enough to risk your credit card information. Opt to pay inside rather than using the machine outside. It ll only take a couple more minutes.
  • Pay Cash Make an effort to carry cash and use it more often at gas stations and restaurants .
  • Ask for the Manager Don t be shy about requesting that your credit or debit card be run by a manager at a restaurant. Protecting your personal financial information is far too important to worry about offending people.
  • Keep Shopping and Banking on Your Private Computer Avoid doing any online shopping or banking on public use computers. If you ever do have to use a public computer for these transactions, clear the cache, cookies, and history afterward, just to be safe.

Final Thought

Credit card skimming can be devastating to your personal finances. I was lucky that my bank notified me quickly and was willing to work with me to counter the false charges to my card. I m sure others have lost far more to this latest trend in credit card fraud and identity theft. Make sure that you are doing everything in your power to protect yourself.

Credit, Debit or ATM Card – What – s the Difference? #debit

How big is your wallet? It might be quite large due to the amount of plastic it holds.

Believe it or not, 78 percent of Americans carry $50 of cash or less on them at any given time. That’s because these days, virtually anything can be purchased with credit cards or debit cards. Should a consumer find him or herself in a pinch where a business doesn’t accept charge cards, that person could always find the nearest ATM and take out some cash.

But what is the difference between all of those kinds of cards anyway? Let’s take a look:

An ATM card is usually issued by your financial institution. The card allows you to take money from your savings account or checking account from an ATM, depending on which account it’s linked with. Generally speaking, you can use your ATM card to withdraw money from any ATM machine. But be careful: Some of those withdrawals will cost you. If an ATM machine is not part of your bank’s network, there’s a good chance you’re going to have to pay a fee to access your money. Because The Milford Bank is a member of the Allpoint ATM Network, our customers are able to withdraw money from one of 55,000 machines across the world with no fees. You can find more information about that here.

• A debit card —also known as a check card—is linked with your checking account and generally has a Visa or MasterCard logo on it. As such, you can use these kinds of cards anywhere credit cards are accepted. It’s important you realize that debit cards are not credit cards, as the money that they draw from is the money that is on deposit in your bank account. Because you’re using your own money to make purchases you don’t have to pay interest on the things you buy with your debit card. But it’s important that you remember to keep track of how much money you have in your account because it is possible to spend more money than you have in your accounts, causing you to overdraw your account.

• A credit card allows you to purchase things with a lender—like American Express, Visa or MasterCard—fronting you the money. The lender charges the merchant a per-dollar percentage on each transaction. They will also charge you interest if you carry a balance on your account. Depending on your credit history, your credit limit may vary. The better your history, generally speaking, the higher your limit.

Different kinds of cards are the preferred method of payment for different kinds of people. There are some people who will only buy things with cash. When you pay with cash, you know exactly how much of it you have in your wallet so you don’t risk spending more than you have.

Other people turn to debit cards because they don’t like having cash on their person in case they lose their wallet, for example. On top of that, you don’t have to worry about carrying a high balance—though you might have to worry about overdrawing your account if you’re not careful.

Because of the freedom and rewards that come with some credit cards, many people feel comfortable buying with them. It is important to try and pay your credit card balance in full each month, however, if you wish to avoid hefty interest rates.

How to successfully recover data from a failed RAID

Recovering data from a failed RAID can easily turn into a costly ordeal. Please read this page carefully before proceeding. If you would like to get help from experts, please consider using our fee-based RAID recovery service.

First determine whether the RAID is hardware-based or software-based. The recovery procedures are very different.

Recovering a hardware RAID

First determine if the problem is caused by the underlying RAID mechanism. If it is not, follow the simpler recovery procedures for an ordinary drive. The following causes of problem are not related to the RAID:

  • Virus attacks.
  • The volume being deleted, resized, reformatted or otherwise changed in Disk Manager or other disk management utilities.

If the problem seems to be in the RAID mechanism, determine the operating state of the RAID and take the appropriate actions.

Avoid the most common mistakes that may cause data to become unrecoverable.

Applying for multiple Amex cards within a short period?

I’m a young small business owner (early 20s). I’ve been with American Express since 2008. I originally got added to my father’s amex account. He has a Costco Platinum card. A little over a year ago, I picked up the zync card on my own account.

Last year I spent

34k on my card and have had no late/missed payments and have a decent credit history. Since my history is young, I only have a 767 faco score. (I utilize credit secure through American Express.)

My gross income is

100k and I have about 25k of liquid assets (checking + retirement accounts)

I really want to get accepted for the Platinum card, as I’m going to be a frequent flyer and would appreciate the benefits of the card.

I called American Express to apply over the phone, but I was a bit weary of applying for the Platinum card because of my limited credit history.

I chose to apply for the Gold Premier rewards out of safety (foolish mistake). I managed to get my application approved and the card is being shipped out.

Would my circumstances yield a platinum card approval?

If I don’t activate the gold card, will I be able to apply for a platinum? Would American Express do a second hard credit pull with the second application?

Should I keep the Gold Card for 13 months and attempt an upgrade?

I do not mind the annual fee difference, as the marginal benefits outweigh the marginal costs.

Thanks for all your help.

You could always call them and ask. Since you are already a member, AmEx can pull credit reports on you all they want and it doesn’t count as a hard inquiry. Usually you have to have the Gold Card for awhile to establish a history with them. The worst they could do is say no, you have to wait. When you upgrade they apply what you have already paid in fees toward the new card.

That sounds like a great idea I would say yes. you never know you might just end up liking the gold rewards better than the platinum.

I would if I were you.

I applied for 3 cards in two days and all was approved. I also already had a clear card totaling four applications in about six months.

This move is highly UN-RECOMMENDED. My application for platinum was for 50 000 Membership Rewards points for new Platinum card signup, transferred 50 k to Delta and I got 30% 15K Point certificate back that was credited back to my account. For 75000 Miles it was worth the hard pull but again I already have all the credit I need and don’t plan on applying for anything for at least two years.

My take is you stay gold, but you know what is best for you.

I agree with ooxs, I would wait. I received 50,000 points when I signed up. Of course, they didn’t show up like they were supposed to, so I called. I was amazed at how much nicer they are when you call Platinum CS versus Gold. I forwarded the email and immediately I received an apology. 50k miles in rewards is a very nice incentive. When AE decides you fit the profile, your account will flag the marketing department to send you an invitation in the postal mail. At that point, if you wait until the next invitation, you are more likely to get bonus points for accepting it. My first invitation had no points attached to it.

    ≔ Highlights

    • Credit card fraud laws vary by state.
    • Fraud often involves misuse and ill intent.
    • Penalties range from misdemeanor fines to felonies carrying years of jail time.

    → What s next

If you have a credit card, you have to worry — at least a little — about credit card fraud. Have you ever wondered, though, if fraudsters ever actually get caught? If so, what kind of consequences do they face?

    States make the call

For the most part, the statutes governing credit card fraud are determined by individual states. Those statutes differ from one state to the next.

In California, the Penal Code is specific and dense to read. The most common crimes referred to are:

    • Using someone else s credit or debit card without that person s consent.
    • Using your own credit or debit card knowing that it has been revoked or expired or that your available balance is less than the purchase price.
    • Using a stolen or fraudulent credit or debit card to receive money, goods or services.

    Crime and punishment

The test is really “fraudulent use,” so don’t worry if you accidentally use a card you canceled. There has to be intent, and other thresholds have to be met. One such threshold that goes beyond “fraudulent intent” is “to obtain a benefit,” often more than $1,000.

Here we’re talking about forgery, alteration, stealing, counterfeiting and even publishing someone else’s information. What a thief actually does will determine if the charge is petty or grand theft, or forgery. The consequences (as in any criminal case) will also depend on the circumstances and the thief’s criminal history.

In general, however, both grand theft and forgery are felonies, subjecting the perpetrator to 16 months or two or three years in California state prison and a maximum $10,000 fine, or as a misdemeanor to up to one year in a county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine. (Petty theft is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six-months in a county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine).

Texas is different. The statutes are pretty specific as to what is illegal and is punishable by what Texas calls a “state jail felony.” It sounds bad, but it s actually the least serious felony in Texas law. Here, a thief gets a minimum of six months in jail but no more than two years, and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

    Federal penalties dwarf states’

Oh, but we aren’t done yet. There are federal violations that often are attached to credit card fraud. These appear under Title 18 USC 1029. If a thief pulls his stunt on government property across state lines, or against a government entity, then federal charges may apply. The consequences there are much worse – as in, 10 to 20 years in prison.

    How Credit Card Skimming Works

    Updated February 27, 2017

Victims of credit card skimming are completely blindsided by the theft. They notice fraudulent charges on their accounts or money withdrawn from their accounts, but their credit and debit cards never left their possession. How did the theft happen?

    How Credit Card Skimming Works

Credit card skimming is a type of credit card theft where crooks use a small device to steal credit card information in an otherwise legitimate credit or debit card transaction.

When a credit or debit card is swiped through a skimmer, the device captures and stores all the details stored in the card s magnetic strip. Thieves use the stolen data to make fraudulent charges either online or with a counterfeit credit card.

Credit card skimmers are often placed over the card swipe mechanism on ATMs and gas stations. With ATMs, the crooks may place a small, undetectable camera nearby to record you entering your PIN. This gives the thief all the information needed to make fake cards and withdraw cash from the cardholder s checking account.

Occasionally, certain retail and restaurant workers who handle credit cards are recruited to be part of a skimming ring. These workers use a handheld device to skim your credit card during a normal transaction. For example, we routinely hand our cards over to waiters to cover the check for a restaurant. The waiter walks away with our credit cards and, for a dishonest waiter, this is the perfect opportunity to swipe the credit card through a skimmer undetected.

Once the victim s credit card information is stolen, thieves will either create cloned credit card to make purchases in store, use the account to make online purchases, or sell the information on the internet.

Victims of credit card skimming are often unaware of the theft until they receive a billing statement or overdraft notices in the mail.

How to Prevent and Detect Credit Card Skimming

Simply using your credit card puts you at risk of becoming a credit card skimming victim. Credit card skimming incidents can be difficult to detect. Unless you know what you re looking for, it can be extremely difficult to detect skimming devices.

Catching fraudulent charges related to a skimming incident requires you to watch your accounts frequently. Monitor your checking and credit card accounts online at least weekly and immediately report any suspicious activity to your bank or credit card issuer.

Here are a few more tips for avoiding credit card skimming.

    • Watch where you shop. Restaurants, bars, and gas stations seem to be the places where credit card incidents happen most frequently. Retail store self-checkouts and ATMs, especially standalone ATMs (those that aren t at the bank) are also places that skimmers can be found.
    • Know how a credit card skimmer looks. Krebs on Security has a well-documented page on credit card skimming and several pictures of credit card skimmers that demonstrate how difficult it is to detect the devices, which have become smaller and more difficult to detect over the years.
    • Check ATMs before using them. At ATMs, skimmers often place a camera within view of the keypad to steal your PIN. Or, they place a fake keypad on top of the real one to record your keystrokes. When you re using an ATM, cover your hand as you type your PIN to keep a camera from catching a view of what you re typing. If the keys seem hard to push, eject your card and use another ATM. Use a bank-operated ATM, which is less likely to have a skimmer, rather than an ATM at a store or gas station.
    • Don t become a victim of credit card cleaning scams. where thieves claim to clean the magnetic strip on your credit card to help it work better. These thieves simply swipe your credit card through a credit card skimmer and take your credit card information.

How to Report a Credit Card Skimming Loss

Contact your bank or credit card issuer to let them know that your credit card information has been compromised. Call first, then follow up in writing. If only your credit card information has been stolen, you won t be liable for any fraudulent charges.

Place a fraud alert on your credit report. This forces businesses to confirm your identity before approving applications in your name.

Alert the Federal Trade Commission. They often work to break up large credit card skimming rings. Your complaint will help catch the thieves.

When looking to get a credit card, there are a variety of things you should consider. If you want a rewards card to use frequently, you might not mind paying a $100 or $200 annual fee. You should also consider the regular APR (as opposed to the introductory rate) and the interest rate. A good interest rate is dependent on how you will use the card. For example, a 20% interest rate is fine if you plan on paying off the balance every month.

It pays to ask these kinds of questions before you fill out the application form. Here are 9 questions you want answered before you sign on the dotted line.

The “very first question” the consumer should ask is, “Why am I applying for this card? Why do I need this card?” says Bruce McClary, media director for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions, a nonprofit affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling

Some positive reasons: The card has low or no fees, a lower interest rate or offers a rewards program that suits your spending habits. “It has to make sense, and it has to fit into your overall lifestyle,” McClary says.

Do you pay off your credit card balances every month? If so, “you don’t care what the interest rate is because you won’t pay any,” says Ric Edelman, author of “The Truth About Money.” “But you care about the (annual) fee,” he says.

If you run a balance, you want the lowest rate you can get, even if that comes with an annual fee.

One clue to your usage: “Look at your past history,” says Edelman. “Because what you’ve done before is what you will be doing.”

If you’re shopping for a card, chances are you’re comparing card terms. But if an issuer sends you an offer, it’s tempting to apply and see what you get.

“It’s really difficult to pick one (in isolation),” says Kelly Rogers, chief development officer for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County and adjunct faculty at Chapman University. “If someone just shows you one car, how do you know if it’s the right car for you?”

Her advice: Do a side-by-side comparison of several different cards before you apply.

Don’t be afraid to plug the card name, “complaints” and “customer service” into your favorite search engine. “I go through and see who has the least amount of complaints and issues,” says Rogers.

Some cards will give you a range of rates you could get, but often that window is pretty wide, says Nick Bourke, director of the Safe Credit Card Project at The Pew Charitable Trusts. Other cards may offer a specific rate (or terms) and either approve or reject you.

If you’re operating totally in the dark, you have another option: Apply by phone and push for an answer on your rate and credit line before the account is opened.

While there are no guarantees, sometimes you can get an answer, says Bourke.

“I’ve actually done this myself,” he says, admitting “you do have to go pretty far in the process.”

You may have to ask for the department that’s actually evaluating your application to get an answer, he says.

“The thing that you want to do is when you’re talking to the person on the phone taking your application is you want to push them as hard as you can to get your APR and credit line,” Bourke says. Then, once you have the information and before the account is opened in your name, “you can say yes or no at that point,” he says.

According to the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, if a card offers a lower interest rate during an introductory period, the promotional rate has to last at least six months. While that introductory offer may be appealing, the regular rate is what you’re really buying.

So find out when the introductory APR expires and what the new rate will be. You can find this information online in the terms and conditions for the card or you can ask a service representative.

Another smart question: How long is that grace period? “Some cards start charging interest immediately,” says Edelman. A card can have different grace periods for balance transfers and cash advances than it does for purchases.

You can find information about the grace period in the credit card offer, thanks to federal rules that took effect in 2010. Look for a summary table of rate and fee disclosures, which will include a statement that explains how to avoid paying interest.

If you’re getting the card for points or rewards, this is one you definitely need to ask, says Josh Frank, senior researcher with the Center for Responsible Lending. Some issuers will revoke rewards if you’re late with a payment by even one day, he says.

“A lot of times, the answer they will give you is that they can take away or reduce your rewards for any reason,” he says. While that’s true, the issuer will have a policy on revoking or reducing points, and that’s what you want to ask about, he says. Under what specific circumstances would they reduce or eliminate a customer’s points?

In most cases, “this is one the customer service agent should know the answer to,” he says.

Some card issuers use your purchase records to assess your ongoing creditworthiness.

That means if you suddenly use your card to purchase retread tires, pay for a session with a marriage counselor or make a purchase at a market on a sketchy side of town, you could see your APR climb or your credit limit fall, says Frank. If you see this practice as an invasion of privacy, ask beforehand if the issuer does this, he says.

How to phrase it: Can my transactions ever be used in rating my credit risk?

And that’s one question the customer service representative “might not know the answer to,” says Frank. “You might want to ask them to transfer you to the credit department manager.”

If you are guaranteeing a card account by co-signing for a college student, ask if you will be on the hook for the debt after the other party turns 21, says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney for the National Consumer Law Center.

Many times, “there is nothing to prevent the issuers from saying you’re going to be guaranteeing this card 15 years from now — long after junior is out of college,” she says.

In addition, find out exactly what has to be done to get you off the account. Are you free to complete those steps yourself? Or will you need the cooperation of someone who might not want you — and those charging privileges — to go away?

Federal regulations limit your liability for unauthorized credit card charges to $50 if you report it within two business days. The longer you wait, the more you may lose. Many issuers cap losses at zero dollars, provided you follow a few rules. So find out how the card would handle charges you didn’t make, says McClary.

Also, does the issuer monitor usage and shut down the card if it sees out-of-the-ordinary charges or spending locations? That feature can be great if you always use the card for the same types of purchases in the same geographic area, but cumbersome if you’re getting the card for travel.

While it sounds counterproductive, you want to ask some detailed questions on how the issuer will treat you if you run into financial problems, says McClary.

Will you lose points or benefits? Will you be hit with late fees or a penalty rate? Ask what those penalties are or look online at the terms and conditions for the card.

Some issuers have programs to slash interest temporarily for customers who get behind, he says. Others don’t. So find out ahead of time what kind of programs the issuer offers that will help you rehabilitate your account and restore your original terms, McClary says.

Ask about the “worst case scenario,” he says. “When do they consider an account to be charged off? And when do they send an account to a collection agency?”

“It may be a little tough to get a hold of that information because it might not be readily available at the customer service level,” says McClary. “You may have to punch it up a level.”

    PCI COMPLIANCE

All merchants accepting credit cards must comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) before July 2010.

    What is PCI-DSS?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) is a worldwide information security standard mandated by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council.

Who makes up the PCI Council?

The council was formed as a collaborative effort between the five major card brands: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB. By coming together, standards were created to help organizations that process card payments prevent credit card fraud through increased controls around data and its exposure to compromises. The major card brands have allowed acquirers and processors to enforce compliance through their own means.

    Why should I become compliant?

You should become PCI compliant in order to make sure you are taking the proper care to ensure that cardholder data is protected. If a breach were to happen at your location, and if you are not PCI compliant at the time, the card associations may assess a fine against you and you will be liable for all the fraudulent transactions caused by the breach. However, if you are compliant, the fine may be reduced and you may not be responsible for the fraudulent transactions.

    How do I become compliant?

As a merchant, you will be responsible to become PCI compliant by PCI regulations. However, as a USBSI merchant, we offer in house PCI assistance to guide you and your business in achieving PCI compliance. Merchants are often advised to complete compliance by going online or by requesting a Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Through these outlets, USBSI’s dedicated staff will provide guidance and advice to questions you have regarding PCI compliance.

If you have further questions concerning PCI compliance and its requirements, you may contact a USBSI PCI Specialist at 888-525-8558 or visit the PCI Council’s website at http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org

Potential Drawbacks of Web Based Merchant Account Credit Card Terminal – USBSwiper

    #

Potential Drawbacks of Web Based Credit Card Merchant Account Terminals

Many businesses sign up for merchant accounts where they want to be able to process credit cards through their computers via the internet. This can be a great alternative to traditional merchant account systems which typically require expensive purchase or lease terminals and the requirement to add a separate phone line for transmission of the data.

Once approved, the merchant is given a user name and password that they use to log into their web portal merchant account web page also known as a “Virtual Terminal”.

The page(s) of the Virtual Terminal have fields for data entry of the customer name, credit card number, expiration date, security code, billing address and transaction amount and details.

Some virtual terminal systems such as Chase PaymenTech also allow for the addition of a low cost credit card reader so that the cumbersome data can be easily “swiped” into the system. This will not only save on time but also errors in data entry. However, many systems that do allow for a “swiper” system require only that particular merchant processor’s own expensive reader which can sometimes be quite cost prohibitive.

Some of the drawbacks of this Virtual Terminal system need to be taken into consideration before deciding on this type of credit card processing system.

One of the biggest problems a merchant can experience with this type of system is what happens when the internet goes down for whatever reason. When a web based credit card processing system loses internet, the entire system is rendered Worthless. Because the system is web based, losing internet loses all data entry and all processing capabilities. This can be devastating and amount to profit loss for a business.

Also, logging in to the virtual terminal can sometimes be a long and tedious process depending on the speed of your internet and how busy the processors servers are. The other problem which can be a real nuisance is that if there is any period of time where you are not doing transactions, many virtual terminals will log you off which will then require you to re-log back in.

A second problem with this type of system is the lack of receipt printing formats. Again, because it is web based, the only “receipt” a merchant can print is the actual web page itself. This will require a laser or inkjet printer which will end up being expensive for not only 8.5 x 11 printer paper, but also for toner. Also, depending on the type of printer being used, this can be a slow process that customers do not want to wait for.

It is extremely important for a merchant to print a receipt not only to give to a customer but also to get signed for their own chargeback protections. There are a very few web based virtual terminal type systems that have formats built into them that will allow printing receipts to smaller thermal receipts such as the type you are used to seeing at a typical store that also has a signature line for customer signatures as well as some of the other formatting that will make a business look more professional.

Another drawback to these systems is that most have no bar code scanning capabilities. Many businesses with a lot of products benefit from being able to do bar code scanning for fast point of sale checkout. A virtual terminal system will typically have no provision for this or even a drop down list of products, descriptions, or pricing. All information typically must be entered in for each transaction manually. This can result in wasted time and productivity.

The USBSwiper.com System solves all of these problems in a cost effective easy to use credit card processing solution. Because the USBSwiper.com system is software based, should internet be lost for any reason, all the transactional information is saved in the system. That way, when internet returns, those transactions can then be processed. Also, the system incorporates bar code scanning and professional custom receipts with a full line of 2.25” portable and rechargeable receipt printers .

Also because you are not logged into any web based system, you do not have to worry about being logged off and having to take the time to re-log back on to those web based servers which can sometimes take a long time and customers do not like to wait.

In addition to this unique software based system, USBSwiper offers a full line of competitive low rate merchant account options giving any business cost savings and flexibility not found in most other systems. The USBSwiper merchant account options also offers ecommerce integration at no extra gateway fess which saves considerable amount of money for all inclusive merchant credit card processing features.

Credit Card Debt Relief Government Program – Project Debt Relief #credit #card

    #

Credit Card Debt Relief Government Program

    Highlights (Click for More):

The government has no specific programs to grant consumers bailout from credit card debt. However, there are a variety of other ways in which the government can provide relief, from recently passed legislation to regulate credit card companies and protect cardholders, to granting bankruptcy filings which can partially or fully forgive credit card debt. to publicly funded credit counseling agencies which can provide you with debt management plans and indirectly through consolidation loans.

Read on to learn more about each type of credit card debt relief government program.

Legislation to Help with Credit Card Debt

Recently, the government has passed legislation designed to make the likelihood of getting into, eventual consequences, and handling of credit card debt easier for consumers. There are three major components of this legislation, which regulates credit card companies and protects cardholders:

    • Earlier Bill Notices. As of August of 2009, credit card companies are legally obligated to notify cardholders of changes to their credit card contract 45 days prior to making the change. This legislation protects the cardholder from the credit card company changing the terms of contract without sufficient prior notice and allows the cardholder more of a choice in the rate at which he or she wants to repay the debt. It’s important to note that you, as the cardholder, also now have the right to refuse a proposed change in your contract. Keep in mind that if you do refuse the change, then you have a maximum of five years to pay off your debt at the originally contracted rate.
    • Restricted Interest Rates. As of February 2010, unless a cardholder has failed to make a single payment within a full 60 day period, the credit card company does not have the right to raise the interest rate on the cardholder’s credit balance. This legislation is designed to protect cardholders from suddenly seeing that their interest rate has been increased while they are struggling to make consistent payments. This is an improvement over past situations where credit card companies raised interest rates in the middle of repayment plans, leaving cardholders to adjust to new and higher payments.
    • Greater Notification to Consumers: The April 2009 legislation also obligates credit card companies to send a statement in the mail to a cardholder three weeks before their payment is due. This three week period is designed to give advance notice to the cardholder of the impending payment, and it is also intended to allow the cardholder a two-week paycheck period during which he or she can hopefully obtain the money necessary to make the payment. The extra week this three week period allows, an improvement over the prior laws under which credit card companies only had to mail statements two weeks before they were due, aims to prevent late payments as well.

Debt Relief Programs Approved by the Government

Though it’s not ideal, if you are in an absolutely desperate debt situation and can see no feasible way out, your best bet is to petition your local branch of the United States Bankruptcy Court and file for bankruptcy. If the Court reviews your records and finds your debt to be eligible, you may be granted partial or full relief. If you are facing credit card debt, this is the closest to a credit card debt relief government program. There are two personal types of bankruptcy you can file with the Bankruptcy Court: Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

    • Chapter 7. You may be eligible to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy if your income is less than the median yearly income level for a person or family in your state. Filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy will erase most of your debt history; however, you should be aware that your credit score will be damaged for 10 years after your filing.
    • Chapter 13. You may be eligible to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. One thing to be aware of with filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy is that your credit score will be damaged for seven years after the date on which you filed.

Debt Settlement as an Alternative to Bankruptcy

    Government Programs for Debt Relief

Filing for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 Bankruptcy can plague you with a set of challenges. such as lawsuits, monetary judgments, or garnished wages which you may want to avoid, not to mention the long term impact on your credit score which it may incur. If you want to avoid bankruptcy, debt settlement is a viable and recommended alternative by the Federal Trade Commission. Under debt settlement, a debtor can receive a lump sum agreement or installment through which he or she will pay off debt at a reduced, fractional rate of the total account balance, perhaps at around half, or more or less depending on the debtor’s situation. Though debtors can hire a firm to help with creating a debt settlement plan. the FTC warns against for-profit firms as they are often out to scam debtors. Debtors can create their own self-managed debt settlement plan or look into free credit counseling agencies .

Seek Help from a Government Funded Credit Counseling Agency

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development certifies credit counseling agencies, which are close to qualifying as a credit card debt relief government program and can create a debt management plan for the debtor. The way credit counseling agencies work is that, after a free initial session, the debtor pays the agency a monthly fee. The agency then works out a reduced payment plan with the credit card company. In exchange, the credit card company will often agree to end any lawsuits or collection plans as long as the debtor is on the plan.

    Government Debt Consolidation Loans

Another way in which a credit card debt relief government program can indirectly help you is through government debt consolidation loans. There are a variety of government debt consolidation loans available, depending on what type of debt you are in, whether it is student or mortgage.

Discover Student Credit Card Review 2016

    by CreditCardForum Staff

Getting your first credit card as a college student may not be easy. In fact, because students often have a limited credit history, the cards aimed at them aren t usually the best when it comes to rewards. However the Discover student cards are different. Here are three reasons why

    Reason #1: Way better rewards

There are two Discover cards designed for students: Discover it for Students and Discover it chrome for students. Here s what the Discover it® for Students is giving for rewards

    • 5 percent cash back in categories. You get new categories every quarter that you can sign up for.
    • 1 percent on everything else. You will always get at least 1 percent on everything else you buy.

As for the Discover it® chrome for Students, it s offering:

    • A permanent 2 percent cash back on up to $1,000 in spending each quarter on combined gas station and restaurant purchases
    • 1 percent cash back on all other purchases

Reason #2: More benefits than most student cards

Both Discover student cards offer the following

    • Purchase Protection. In my opinion this is one of the most useful credit card benefits. With it, the eligible purchases made with your Discover card are protected for the first 90 days against theft or accidental damage, up to $500 in coverage per purchase.
    • Extended Product Warranty. On eligible purchases, Discover gives you an additional year of coverage on your existing warranty of 36 months or less. So let s say you buy something, like a brand new iPad from the Apple store, that comes only with a one-year manufacturer s warranty. In addition to that, you will have one year extra through Discover for no additional cost.
    • Return Protection. Ever try to return something but the store won t take it back because more than 30 days have gone by since the purchase? The nice thing about this benefit is that you can return any qualifying purchase to Discover within 90 days for up to a $500 refund, even if the store won t take it back. Keep in mind though that just like any return, you have to give back the item in like-new condition.
    • $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee. Don t worry about getting scammed, because if your card or account number is ever used fraudulently, you won t be responsible for those charges.

Reason #3: The fees are fair

    • No annual fee. Yep that s right, you get all the above benefits for no additional cost.
    • No over-limit fee. You won t get charged a fee if you go over your credit limit.
    • No foreign transaction fees. Many credit cards will charge you up to 3 percent extra when making purchases outside the U.S. That goes for purchases made when you are physically outside the U.S. but sometimes also for purchases you make online from overseas merchants. With Discover, however, you can use your card anywhere in the world without paying those fees (assuming the merchant accepts Discover).
    • No pay-by-phone fee. Need to make a payment by phone using your checking account? Some cards will charge you $5 or $10 bucks to do this, but not Discover.
    • Free FICO score on your monthly statement. This card gives you your real FICO score from TransUnion on your monthly statements. Considering the fact that you probably got a credit card to build your credit, being able to monitor your progress for free is a huge perk. That score would otherwise cost you $20 every time you check it.
    • No late fee on your first late payment. Normally, late payments can cost you up to $35 a pop. But with this card, at least you get one freebie. That s definitely helpful during college finals when you may forget.
    • No interest rate increases for paying late. A lot of cards will jack up your APR if you ever pay late. This one won t do that.

Compare the student credit cards for yourself

Worried about your card not being accepted? Discover is accepted at more than 94 percent of the top 2,000 internet retailers and more than 8 million businesses. You can use them almost everywhere that takes Visa and MasterCard.

Best Sign-up Offers (updated January 2016)

You won t find these promotions everywhere, but I m listing both here so you can choose the one that s best for your needs.

    Discover it® for Students:
Offer #1: Get a 0 percent intro APR for 6 months on purchases. After that, it s a standard variable purchase APR of 13.24 percent to 22.24 percent.

    Discover it® chrome for Students:

Oh yeah, and here s some important advice you not know about credit cards. In fact, a lot of old people don’t even know these things:

#1 – Build credit even without a balance
One of the reasons people start getting into debt is because they think it’s actually good for their credit score to have a balance. But this is completely wrong and doing so can actually harm your credit!

There is a huge difference between carrying a balance (allowing a balance to carry on past the due date and paying interest) and reporting a balance (having a balance when your billing cycle closes). When your billing cycle closes each month, the amount due is what’s reported to the credit bureaus. If you then pay that reported balance in full, you won t have to pay interest, and you ll get all the credit-building benefits.

So if you are regularly using your Discover card, you have the ability to build your credit… carrying a balance into the next billing cycle (and paying interest on it) offers absolutely no benefit to your credit score.

#2 – Carrying a large balance may hurt your credit
Even though you should let a balance report each month, keep it small.

The percentage of your credit limit you use – known as credit utilization – is factored into your FICO credit score. Having high utilization is actually bad. Banks like people that have a lot of credit but don’t use it! With the FICO formula, using above 30 percent of your credit limit may negatively affect your credit core.

The simple solution? Once you get your student credit card, always stay below 30 percent of your credit limit. Make multiple payments each month to keep it below that mark.

#3 – A better score means cheaper student loans
Let’s be honest here… college tuition is out of control! If you’re going to be taking out more loans to finish your degree, of course you want to get the best interest rate possible. Well, whether you get a good rate or bad rate depends on your credit score and history.

This is why it’s so important to not screw up with your new Discover student credit card, or any credit account for that matter. Use your cards responsibly – pay your bills on time and in full, and keep your credit utilization in check (as discussed above). Doing this will help build up your credit and you will be thankful for that when it comes time to get a loan.

The 4 Best Credit Card Processing Options for Small Businesses

Cash is no longer king. To stay relevant and competitive, credit card processing for small business owners is no longer a nice to have but a must. Sponsored by National Bankcard

Cash is not always king. As our society steadily moves towards becoming more digitalized and reliant on technology, we are seeing less physical money exchange hands.

However, keeping up with the times is not the only reason to upgrade your small businesses payment system. Here are just some of the advantages accepting credit cards will have on your bottom line:

    • Increase in overall sales
    • Improve customer service
    • Broaden your customer base
    • Save time with fewer trips to the bank.

So if you are ready to take the plunge and provide more value to your customers, here are four of the best credit card processing solutions for small business owners.

    1. Terminal Processing

A payment terminal, also known as a point of sale terminal, is a device that allows customers to make payments with their credit cards in store. It is a reliable and secure method of accepting credit and debit payments.

    Advantages

The main benefit of credit card terminals for small business owners is its direct link to improved customer satisfaction. With a card machine payment option, you will be able to reduce wait times with faster checkout, give your customers a secure way to pay for their purchase and more options to pay that suit their needs such as contactless payments and digital wallets.

There are also a few vendors that give small business owners a free terminal processing system on sign up. This value add helps to reduce initial setup costs and is something to look into if your budget is tight.

    Disadvantages

The downsides to accepting cards are minimal, but most of them can be avoided. While credit card fraud is still a common problem, merchants can train their staff to spot a fake debit or credit card. Another disadvantage is the unavoidable cost. However, business owners should look at it simply as a cost of doing business and realize the device will pay itself off in no time.

It s easy to see that the cons associated with terminal processing are minimal and can be easily avoided. The benefits will not only help your business grow but drive customer loyalty and deliver a positive in-store experience.

    2. Mobile Processing

Mobile credit card processing also referred to as mPOS (mobile point of sale) gives small businesses the ability to accept card payments with a phone or tablet instead of a terminal or point-of-sale (POS) system.

    Advantages

The main benefits of choosing a mobile credit card processor are its versatility and the low-cost factor. For small business owners that attend local farmer s markets or trade shows, this option lets you accept credit cards wherever you are. This capability can also benefit stationary business owners who can mobilize their sales team by adding more checkout lines without purchasing additional registers.

Mobile processing companies also tend to charge fewer fees than traditional credit card processors and take the guesswork out of tipping by providing preset percentages for customers during checkout.

    Disadvantages

There are two main concerns that small business owners should consider before purchasing a mobile credit card processor is how it will negatively affect customer service and getting a robust estimate on costs.

If you choose not to add a printer with your mobile processor, it will take extra time to capture an email address to send the receipt electronically. Depending on how busy your shop is or if your customer is in a rush, this might lead to some dissatisfaction.

While mobile credit processors are less expensive than standard credit card terminals for small business owners, they do come with a bunch of small costs that add up. Before biting the bullet with a vendor be sure to inquire about the fees that will be charged per transaction, per day, per month and even year so that you can get a holistic cost estimate.

Mobile credit card processing for small business owners are ideal for merchants who are on the go and want an affordable solution. The disadvantages above can easily be avoided with some careful planning, and there are numerous ways to lower your mobile credit processing costs if you are prepared to negotiate your rates and ask the right questions.

    3. POS Processing

POS credit card processing for small business owners is a reliable, affordable and flexible way to manage POS operations. It transforms an ordinary tablet into an all-in-one payment solution that can complement a range of add-on applications as well as cash drawers, scanners, printers and more.

    Advantages

One of the key advantages of a POS processing system is the ability for small business owners to access their sales data no matter where they are. By using a cloud-based system, you can see real-time inventory levels and customer information as you go about your day.

A POS processing system also lets merchants take advantage of a cloud-based integration and offer services that are not possible with a traditional POS platforms. Besides allowing payments to be processed anywhere on the business premises, business owners can also use this system to set up check-splitting, loyalty programs and integration with external accounting platforms.

    Disadvantages

Before you make the big switch to a POS processing system, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, it is important to remember that as your POS system is hosted in the cloud, it is only as good as your internet connection. Do your research and make sure you either choose a vendor that offers offline services or that you have a backup plan in place in case your connection goes down.

By embracing cloud computing technology like POS and setting up systems to combat possible downtime, small business owners can operate just as efficiently as bigger organizations.

    4. Online Processing

It is not enough to just have a brochure, these days you have to sell online to stay relevant, and that means accepting credit cards. An online processing system lets merchants accept online payments from buyers worldwide. It is a safe, reliable and seamless way to manage payment processing while you focus on making the best possible product or service.

    Advantages

Online payment systems give your customers a convenient way to place an order with your business. Instead of having to drive to your storefront, an online POS lets them shop from the comfort of their own home. By offering this functionality on your website, you can easily increase sales by not giving your customer the chance to look at a competitor that does offer online sales or forgetting about visiting your store altogether.

    Disadvantages

With an online payment system, you will be dealing with sensitive information such as credit cards numbers that be stolen or altered. As a result, you need to make sure you have adequate security to protect your customer s details as well as your company s reputation. Before choosing a vendor, find out what systems they have in place to minimize fraud and their guarantees on data protection.

In short, an online processing system is a necessary payment option for small business owners who want to remain relevant and competitive. By ensuring your business partners with a service provider that complies with high-security standards, you can increase your revenue and take your business to a global market.

    Conclusion

Before you decide which of the four credit card processing solutions is the best decision for your small business, make sure you weigh up all the factors and consider which service vendor will be the best fit for not just you, but for your customers as well.

Tips for Using a Travel Rewards Credit Card

Seek out the perfect plastic. There is a wide variety of travel rewards programs to choose from and each offers a different earning and redemption structure. It’s important to determine whether a card’s earning potential can be maximized based on your specific spending habits — for example, gas and grocery purchases, or earning on all spending.

    Heed the fee.
Travel rewards cards are often packed with additional insurance, concierge and lounge benefits — and that means the majority charge an annual fee. Look for cards that waive this charge for a limited promotional period, and determine whether your annual earnings offset the fee amount. For those who are fee adverse, a non-fee card with a lower earning threshold can be a better fit.

    Ask about redemption.
Those points won’t do much good if they’re grounded during your desired departure season. Seat capacity, seasonal, and minimum redemption restrictions are common pitfalls vacationers should be aware of. For the greatest flexibility, look for cards that allow points to be redeemed directly on travel purchases charged on the card.

    Cover yourself.
Many travel cards come with built-in insurance benefits — but you shouldn’t assume you’re covered. At a bare minimum, ensure you have sufficient travel medical and accident insurance for yourself, spouse and any dependents travelling with you. Add-ons like trip interruption, delay and cancellation coverage can provide greater peace of mind on your journey.

5 Ways to Maximize Credit Card Airline Miles

If the idea of flying all over the world and not having to pay for it appeals to you, then you’re in luck. The opportunity to fly for little-to-no-money has never been easier or more available than it is right now.

That’s because more and more businesses are offering airline miles as rewards for using their services. With a little planning and research, you can take full advantage of the money you spend just by spending it the right way.

    1) Look for partnership deals

Some credit card companies offer deals for purchasing subscriptions and services through businesses they partner with. These could include newspaper and magazine subscriptions, insurance company quotes and policies, hotels and car rentals agencies – you name it. If this is something you need anyway, why not earn miles for it?

    2) Take advantage of one-time bonus miles

Many credit card companies offer substantial bonuses for spending a certain amount during the initial period of having the card. If you plan accordingly, you can take advantage of thousands of extra miles, and then pay off the charges and do it over again with a new card. It’s the fastest way to accumulate extra miles. Many of these cards even offer 0% introductory rates.

    3) Use the right card

If you’re planning to make a major purchase such as a car, boat or even furniture or appliances, use a credit card that will take full advantage of your purchase. Some cards offer even up to three times the bonus points for major purchases made with the card.

    4) Watch for special offers

Some credit card companies will make special offers on extra airline miles. Look these over carefully and decide if it fits in with your spending and budget plans. Some offers don’t require you to spend any extra money but simply give you extra miles for signing up an authorized user.

    5) Look for points that don’t expire

Most of the credit card airline mile rewards points are good indefinitely. That may not be true, however, with the airline frequent flyer programs themselves. If you do plan to transfer points from a credit card reward plan to an airline frequent flyer program, be aware of mile expiration dates.

Credit card airline miles are a great way to fly for practically free. Take full advantage of all the extra bonuses and ways to earn more miles. If you regularly use your airline miles credit card for the majority of your purchases, your miles will add up faster than you think. Soon you’ll be flying high and enjoying the rewards.

College students would be wise to review terms of Higher One cards

It’s Only Money’s digital informants suggest that its column last year on Higher One’s “debit” card is getting a surge in hits. Could it be students returning or enrolling in colleges that use Higher One as an ID (including Portland State University, Southern Oregon University and Mt. Hood Community College) are checking out the card before they use it?

Remember this is the “debit” card that, in most circumstances, requires a holder to use it as a “credit” card to avoid a 50-cent-per-swipe fee. This odd financial lesson is sanctioned by the institutions of higher education that allow the card to double as an ID and reap revenue from it. In 2010, Higher One got 78% of its $145 million in revenue from “interchange fees, ATM fees, non-sufficient funds fees, other banking services fees and convenience fees,” according to its annual report.

I’m a middle aged guy with a few years experience dealing with banks. I’m returning to PSU in the fall and I’m expecting my “One Card” in the mail any day. I was intrigued by their offer of a free checking account. Reading the terms, that is perhaps the worst checking account I have ever seen. A typical commercial bank would offer a better deal than that, not to mention the options available from credit unions.

Honestly, the company is doing nothing particularly wrong, but only the very desperate should be tempted to use their checking account, it’s just a bad deal.

Returning students. Have you seen any changes with the Higher One card? Like it? Don’t like it?

Comparison of credit cards with no balance transfer fee

Rates last updated June 24th, 2017

What is a balance transfer fee?

Some credit cards charge a one-time fee of between 1-3% of the amount you are transferring. This fee is more common among 0% balance transfer credit cards because it lets card providers recover lost profits made from low or no interest rates. Depending on the size of your balance transfer and the percentage charged, this fee can make your balance transfer less worthwhile. For example, if you’re moving a debt of $10,000 and the balance transfer fee is 3% of the total, your balance transfer fee would be $300. You can find out whether a card charges a balance transfer fee on our review pages or the relevant product disclosure statement.

How do no balance transfer fee credit cards work?

No balance transfer fee credit cards promise no extra fees when you move your balance across to the new account. However, despite waiving the balance transfer fee, some card providers might make up for it by charging higher interest rates or annual fees.

How to compare balance transfer credit cards with no fee

The following factors are important when considering a no fee balance transfer credit card:

    • Balance transfer interest rate. When it comes to interest rates on your balance transfer, lower is obviously better and 0% is the ideal rate.
    • Length of promotional period. The length of the introductory period directly factors into your interest savings: the longer the period, the more money you’ll save.
    • Revert rate. This is the higher interest rate that you’ll pay once the promotional period ends. This is especially important if you have not paid your debt off in full by this time.
    • Balance transfer limit. The amount you can transfer is limited by the card’s limit and the card’s policy on balance transfers. Your transfer may be limited to a percentage of your credit card limit (such as up to 90% of your credit limit).
    • Eligible banks. There may be restrictions on which credit cards you can transfer your existing balance to. Usually you will not be allowed to balance transfer between accounts managed by the same card issuer. See the full list of who you can balance transfer to here .
    • Interest rates. Consider the other interest rates that may apply, such as the rates for a cash advance or purchase.
    • Fees. You should also factor in other possible fees including the card’s annual fee as well as cash advance, ATM and foreign transaction fees.

How to make the most of a no balance transfer fee credit card

Follow these tips to maximise the benefits of your new card:

    • Plan your repayments. Do this at the outset and stick to it. By being disciplined and forming a well-considered debt reduction plan, you will get out of debt more quickly. The aim is to repay your entire balance before the introductory period ends.
    • Pay more than the minimum amount. Many people make the mistake of reducing their monthly repayment amount and pocketing the extra cash they save during the 0% interest period. While you might find the extra cash flow helpful in the short term, this won’t help you reduce your credit card debt in the long run.
    • Be careful about making new purchases. If you’re planning to use your balance transfer credit card to make purchases, be aware that you may not be eligible for interest-free days on purchases while carrying a balance. The interest on your purchases could offset the interest savings from your balance transfer and grow your debt.
    • Avoid incurring other fees. Other fees can quickly accumulate to erode your interest savings. For instance, getting cash from an ATM could incur a cash advance fee, an ATM fee and a cash advance interest rate that begins accruing from the date of that transaction.

Even with 0% interest on your balance transfer and no balance transfer fees, there is still no perfect credit card out there. The best you can do is thoroughly research all available options to find the one that will best match your needs.

    Cash Back Credit Cards

Do they all work the same way?

The most straightforward cash back credit cards pay back a fixed rate percentage on all purchases made. This can provide an easy form of reward, without the need to focus on spending at specific stores or working out how best to increase the rate of cash back. Selected retailer cash back cards provide a bonus rate for shopping at participating outlets. Some credit cards also feature a tiered program, in which different size purchases receive a higher or lower percentage cash back rate depending on the particular deal.

Or another way that cash back cards work is to give new cardholders a lump sum credited to your account when you get approved for the card or when you start to use the card in a store.

How much cash back can I expect to earn?

While the rates vary greatly between different offers, you can typically expect to receive 0.5% or 1% cash back on a flat-rate deal, rising to 5% or even 10% with participating retailer programs or during bonus periods.

Is there a cap on how much is paid back?

What other factors should I consider while selecting a cash back card?

It is very important to look at all the features of cash back credit cards before applying to make sure the deal will be genuinely beneficial:

Annual fee: Calculate your estimated annual spend and how much cash back this earns, and compare this figure with the annual fee. If the annual fee is greater, then you are not going to get any benefit from the card.

Interest rate: Cash back credit cards often feature a relatively high interest rate, which is applied to any outstanding balance on your account. If for any reason you are unable to pay your monthly bill in full, a high rate could quickly negate the savings you make on the cash back.

Introductory offers: Many cash back cards offer an introductory promotion of a bonus cash back rate for an initial period, typically a few months. Check to see how the rate changes at the end of the promotion.

Balance transfers: These cards also often feature the option to transfer a balance so you can repay your existing credit card debt at a lower rate. You should be aware that balances transferred do not earn any cash back, and if your priority is repaying your debt, you are probably better off choosing a different type of card with a better balance transfer deal.

Restrictions and penalties: Banks often impose restrictions on how much can be earned per month, the types of purchases that are applicable and penalties for missing payments or misusing your account. Study all the terms and conditions to ensure you can get the best return.
