Since 1949, through the charitable giving of families and foundations, the Cancer Center has been at the forefront of comprehensive outpatient cancer care in our region. The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara joined with Sansum Clinic in 2012 to create the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic, with a vision for further enhancing oncology care on the Central Coast. The advanced technology at the Cancer Center allows patients to be treated in a comfortable and familiar environment here in our community. The Cancer Center retains highly trained and devoted medical personnel, acquires the latest technology and treatment protocols, integrates oncology supportive programs and commits to provide every opportunity for successful treatment, recovery and a healthy return to the activities that enrich life. Volunteer

One of Hospice of Central Pennsylvania’s longest and proudest traditions is our reliance on dedicated, well-trained volunteers. Hundreds of men and women have provided caring, compassionate support for our patients and their families during our more than twenty-five years of operations. Our volunteers play many roles, and their work is invaluable.

Roles of a Hospice Volunteer

Patient care/family support volunteers:

  • Hold a hand. Listen
  • Provide much-needed respite for caregivers
  • Offer emotional and spiritual support
  • Run errands. Do light housekeeping
  • Let people know they are not alone

Volunteers at the Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence:

  • Help care for patients
  • Help in the kitchen or garden. Do light housekeeping
  • Do household maintenance. Shop or run errands

Speakers Bureau volunteers: Help us inform the community about our services

  • Health Fairs
  • Speak to community groups and organizations

Bereavement Progam Support:

  • Memorial Service
  • Camp Dragonfly: Buddy volunteers, program support

Clerical support volunteers:

  • Prepare mailings. Do computer data entry

  • Transport clients to appointments and meetings
  • Pick up medical supplies and equipment

Characteristics of a Hospice Volunteer

Volunteers are special to us and to the families with whom they work. Yet a good volunteer does not need extraordinary skills. They need only feel a dedication to helping others and a compassion for a dying patient and the family and friends caring for their loved-one.

While there is an age minimum (18 years of age), there is no one who is too old to volunteer. To be comfortable in this role, one must be emotionally stable and mature enough to be able to talk openly about death and loss. We also ask that you have your own transportation and be able to give 4 – 6 hours per week, on average, after training.

In return, volunteers experience satisfaction in serving others and often personal and spiritual growth.

Volunteer Training

Volunteers are an integral member of the patient care team. In order to prepare them for their responsibilities, we offer extensive training. In addition to an orientation to the philosophy of hospice care, we address a wide variety of end-of-life issues such as:

  • Palliative care and symptom management
  • Day-to-day care of the patient
  • Understanding grief and loss
  • Understanding spiritual needs
  • Keeping healthy boundaries as care givers
  • Understanding family dynamics
  • Developing good listening skills

For volunteers who wish to support the work of the agency in ways other than direct care of our patients and their families, we modify our orientation and training to suit those particular goals.

Volunteer Support

Because our volunteers are valued members of our team, we want to ensure their well-being by offering on-going support during their patient assignments. To this end, our volunteer coordinator and other members of the patient care team are always available to assist volunteers as they work with their assigned patient and family members. We also host periodic in-service training sessions to share experiences from the field and acquaint our team with new information, policies and procedures.

Open Virtual Tour

In 2006 I shot our very first spherical aerial panorama. from which the AirPano project started, in the beautiful place of the Colorado and the San Juan rivers confluence (USA):

The result was overwhelming by looking at the large screen one had a total illusion of flying over the canyon. And so we decided to continue our experiments.

The next attempt was made in 2007 above the island of Manhattan. I remember this photo shoot by one funny detail: there were no headphones for passengers in the helicopter’s cabin. I had to shout from the back seat (while trying to overcome the engine roar that was coming from the open door) to let the pilot know where to go. He didn’t hear me anyway, so in order to change the shooting position I had to tap on his shoulder and then after he looked at me I had to point the direction with my finger where the thumb down meant moving lower. And guess how I showed him to go higher 🙂 It was fun.

After that incident, when hiring a helicopter I always ask: Do you have passenger headphones in the cabin?
And pilots are always surprised: But of course! Is it possible not to have them?
Yes, it is possible, I answer In New York 🙂

Despite of all the difficulties, this photo shoot was accomplished, delivering world’s first virtual photo tour above Manhattan .

There were many more flights after this one, and many like-minded people joined AirPano project in the process. As of today we shot around 100 spherical panoramas of the most interesting and beautiful places in all the continents of our planet. Except for Antarctica. We also made virtual photo tours over the world’s most beautiful cities.

In 2011 we returned to New York to once again photograph Manhattan: this time making it much better technically and artistically. Enjoy the daytime aerial panoramas of Manhattan now. The evening flight over Manhattan and the large photographic virtual tour will be published in the nearest future.

New York is the most famous city of the USA, and Manhattan is the most famous part of New York. It all started 400 years ago when the most famous and profitable in human history real estate deal was made: the Native Americans sold this ‘not so useful’ piece of land to Europeans for 24 dollars.

Since that time the island has changed dramatically. For 24 dollars one can probably buy a ticket to the Empire State Building.

Present day Manhattan is the most populated island on Earth. The land itself costs about 40 billion US dollars, and the cost of the entire Manhattan, including its real estate, reaches over 3 trillion US dollars.

This remarkable part of New York City is best to be discovered on foot not only because of the infamous New York traffic or cost of parking in New York. There is a joke in New York that only wasteful people can afford driving in New York, because the time one spends on finding a parking spot sometimes equals the time it takes to drive from one side of Manhattan to another.

New York is known to be a financial capital of the world, and the island of Manhattan is where all the banks, offices, largest insurance companies and corporations are located literally one on top of another. Basically the rest of New York, and eventually, the rest of the United States, work for Manhattan, making sure that this gigantic city inside of the city continues its mission processing the wealth of the whole world.

Besides a large number of museums, almost every building in Manhattan has a historical value. Old buildings harmoniously coexist with the best examples of the modern architecture. Most famous New York attractions are located in Manhattan, including Empire State Building mentioned above, Central Park and Times Square. There is also colorful China Town and bright Broadway they are all located on this island. It is a shame not to bring a photo of Manhattan from your trip to New York!

Munsinger Gardens

From Sawmill to Flower Garden

The history of St. Cloud’s Munsinger Gardens may be compared to the garden’s well-worn paths; for both have interesting and unexpected turns. During the 1880s the lower east bank of the Mississippi River was the site of a sawmill. But by 1915 the city purchased the area for use as a neighborhood park. Eventually, the site became known as Riverside Park and Munsinger Gardens, the latter section named in honor of a former superintendent of parks, Joseph Munsinger. Munsinger Gardens has experienced many different stages of development. Improvements to the gardens occurred during the Great Depression through the Works Progress Administration. Projects from this period included planting trees and flowerbeds. Other additions included the creation of rock-lined paths, a lily pond, and a fountain. However, most of the work in developing the garden was directed by Joseph Munsinger. The first greenhouse was built in 1938. While the original greenhouse is gone, new ones stand in its place, and garden staff continues the tradition of growing flowers that help beautify this wonderful jewel known as Munsinger Gardens.

Nasal obstruction can be caused by many factors including a deviated septum (the wall on the inside of your nose that separates the right and left nasal passages), inferior turbinate hypertrophy (structures within your nose that help warm and humidify the air that enters your nose), or weakened cartilage on the outside of your nose to name a few. If the septum is crooked or the inferior turbinates are large, this problem can be corrected with a septoplasty that straightens the septum or an inferior turbinate reduction. Dr. Balsley is licensed by the NC Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologist and certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. She is also fluent in American Sign Language. Her interests include pediatrics, hearing aids, assistive listening devices, diagnostics and early identification of hearing loss.

Beth was born and raised in the Northern Virginia area. She attended Virginia Tech for her undergraduate education, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise in 2009. She then pursued graduate education at Wake Forest University, where she completed a Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant studies in 2012. She worked in gastroenterology prior to joining CCENT.
Beth is licensed by the NC Medical Board and the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

I think I saw a security guard on the property and there are lots of security cameras, but I think they deal with a lot of criminal activity on the property; when we checked in, we were asked if we were going to do anything illegal. I would recommend spending an extra $30 and staying somewhere else.

If you are looking for a place to rest your head, take a hot shower and watch some tv, then its worth it.

  • Most banks offer FDs for tenure of 7 Days to 10 Years.
  • The Ratnakar Bank IDBI Bank do offer fixed deposits up to 20 years too .

  • Most banks compound interest quarterly

Types of Service

The AlarmNet network’s reliability is assured with a state of the art network control center that houses dedicated communication services and hardware platforms. Hardware servers and communication paths are completely redundant, with hot back-up databases housed in two separate locations. If one system were to have a catastrophic event, the other system can take over without any service interruption. Both locations are equipped with battery and generator backup along with technical support 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week for uninterrupted service. This level of sophistication allows us to handle alarm communication for UL listed and critical high-line security installations.

Network Architecture

In the AlarmNet architecture, although each of the networks are independent of one another, subscriber radios and Internet transmitters may send messages from one network and be received at nearly any central station location in North America over another technology. The AlarmNet Network Control Center (NCC) accomplishes this integration. This design offers the following important benefits:

1. Integration of Multiple Networks

One of the fundamental principles behind AlarmNet is the integration of different network types. In the AlarmNet architecture, member central stations are equipped with AlarmNet wireless or Internet receiving equipment or both. This equipment communicates directly with the AlarmNet network. Depending on its needs at installation at the protected premise, an installer may choose to use any of the available types of subscriber radios or Internet transmitters, whichever works best for that installation. Although each of the different products may report through a different network, the central station does not need to incur the costs of time, money, or labor to operate, maintain, and integrate all of these networks.

When a central station signs up with AlarmNet, it establishes a network connection scheme between the central station and AlarmNet and as a result gains access to any of its customers at the protected premise through that scheme and the interaction of AlarmNet.

2. Learn One, Know Them All

All of the different subscriber devices used for the different network services have a similar look and feel. The same programming tool is used for most of the devices. All signals are delivered to the central station in a uniform, familiar reporting format. This assures that the central station can receive signals from any type of AlarmNet subscriber; past, present, or future. Once equipped to receive alarm messages from the AlarmNet network, the central station can provide network services to any subscriber without additional expense.

3. Supervision and Speed of Delivery

AlarmNet radios and transmitters are supervised on a regular basis. The supervision is performed automatically, and is transparent to the central station. The AlarmNet network communicates with all AlarmNet devices on a regular basis, assuring that they are operational. The AlarmNet network reports to the central station only when there is a problem. The central station does not need to worry about supervision or maintenance of the network, since the network performs these functions automatically. The central station only receives the signals it needs: actual alarm or trouble messages. When the network receives an alarm, it automatically and immediately forwards the signal to the appropriate central station. The AlarmNet transmission generally will reach the central station before the traditional dialer-based signal, in cases where an AlarmNet device and the digital dialer both send signals.

4. Secure, Redundant, Wireless Protection

Not all competitive wireless subscriber services offered in the market are wireless at both ends. For example, due to the design of the cellular network, competing cellular services deliver signals to the central station over the regular switched telephone network. In these cases, the communications integrity of the central station (and all premises protected by that central station) is vulnerable to the same weaknesses as any landline-dependent customer (line cut, service outages, and natural disasters). Limited services such as these protect only a portion of the communications chain. Standard AlarmNet wireless delivery, however, assures an end-to-end wireless system that provides redundancy, supervision, and verification of message delivery. It only makes sense that the central station should use wireless communications to maintain the same level of security and performance in its communications infrastructure as it does at the protected premises.

In order to maintain a redundant, invulnerable link to subscribers using wireline-terminated networks, a service provider must maintain at least two physically distinct and independent connections to every network type. AlarmNet maintains such connections at every level, saving the central station the expense and complexity of maintaining such an elaborate communications infrastructure. AlarmNet’s connection to the central station also has two layers of redundancy: every central station is equipped with a primary and backup transceiver.

    One of Hospice of Central Pennsylvania’s longest and proudest traditions is our reliance on dedicated, well-trained volunteers. Hundreds of men and women have provided caring, compassionate support for our patients and their families during our more than twenty-five years of operations. Our volunteers play many roles, and their work is invaluable.

    Roles of a Hospice Volunteer

    Patient care/family support volunteers:

    • Hold a hand. Listen
    • Provide much-needed respite for caregivers
    • Offer emotional and spiritual support
    • Run errands. Do light housekeeping
    • Let people know they are not alone

    Volunteers at the Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence:

    Characteristics of a Hospice Volunteer

    Volunteers are special to us and to the families with whom they work. Yet a good volunteer does not need extraordinary skills. They need only feel a dedication to helping others and a compassion for a dying patient and the family and friends caring for their loved-one.

    While there is an age minimum (18 years of age), there is no one who is too old to volunteer. To be comfortable in this role, one must be emotionally stable and mature enough to be able to talk openly about death and loss. We also ask that you have your own transportation and be able to give 4 – 6 hours per week, on average, after training.

    In return, volunteers experience satisfaction in serving others and often personal and spiritual growth.

    Volunteer Training

    Volunteers are an integral member of the patient care team. In order to prepare them for their responsibilities, we offer extensive training. In addition to an orientation to the philosophy of hospice care, we address a wide variety of end-of-life issues such as:

    • Palliative care and symptom management
    • Day-to-day care of the patient
    • Understanding grief and loss
    • Understanding spiritual needs
    • Keeping healthy boundaries as care givers
    • Understanding family dynamics
    • Developing good listening skills

    For volunteers who wish to support the work of the agency in ways other than direct care of our patients and their families, we modify our orientation and training to suit those particular goals.

    Volunteer Support

    Because our volunteers are valued members of our team, we want to ensure their well-being by offering on-going support during their patient assignments. To this end, our volunteer coordinator and other members of the patient care team are always available to assist volunteers as they work with their assigned patient and family members. We also host periodic in-service training sessions to share experiences from the field and acquaint our team with new information, policies and procedures.

I think I saw a security guard on the property and there are lots of security cameras, but I think they deal with a lot of criminal activity on the property; when we checked in, we were asked if we were going to do anything illegal. I would recommend spending an extra $30 and staying somewhere else.

If you are looking for a place to rest your head, take a hot shower and watch some tv, then its worth it.

    Hospice Care
    An end-of-life care option that provides quality, compassionate care for patients diagnosed with a life limiting illness. Hospice care is provided by a team of skilled professionals and volunteers who provide expert medical care and pain management, individualized for each patient. Spiritual and emotional support is tailored to the needs of the patient and their family.

    Does Hospice mean we are “giving up” on our loved one?
    When a patient is admitted to Hospice, it usually means there is no further curative treatment to offer. That does not mean, however, that all treatment will be discontinued. The focus is now on improving quality of life and encouraging the patient to live life to the fullest. Aggressive pain and symptom management will be provided to your love one.

    Should I tell my loved one he/she is dying?
    The Hospice team will answer questions concerning death when asked, at time of admission to Hospice, or when plans or decisions need to be made. Hospice staff members encourage families to be honest with the patient about the terminal prognoses. This is a time for the patient and family to discuss issues that may need to be resolved before the patient dies. More often than not, the patient is already aware of his or her prognoses, but doesn’t want to say anything for fear of causing emotional pain to his or her family. Don’t be afraid to be honest with your loved one and say the things that need to be said.

    Is it true that my family member must sign a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) prior to being admitted to Hospice?
    This is not a requirement for admission. A DNR status has no bearing on the care the patient and family will receive. Hospice is about having choices everyone can be comfortable with.

    Should we wait until our brother has only a few days to live before calling Hospice?
    No. When a referral is made in the last few days of a patient’s life, the full aspect of Hospice care cannot be provided. When a patient is told there is no further curative treatment, a referral to Hospice should be made.

    Is Hospice care expensive?
    Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances. Medicare and Medicaid Hospice Benefits cover all hospice services related to the terminal diagnosis, and requires little, if any, out of pocket expense. Private insurances pay differently and expenses for the patient and family may vary. In this case, the patient will be informed of any possible costs, upon admission to Hospice.
