Criminal Law

What we call criminal law broadly refers to federal and state laws that make certain behavior illegal and punishable by imprisonment and/or fines. Our legal system is largely comprised of two different types of cases: civil and criminal. Civil cases are disputes between people regarding the legal duties and responsibilities they owe each other. Criminal cases, meanwhile, are charges pursued by prosecutors for violations of criminal statutes.

Criminal Law: History

In the United States, British common law ruled during colonial times. Common law is a process that establishes and updates rules that govern some nations. Once America became an independent nation, it adopted the U.S. Constitution as “the supreme law of the land.” The U.S. continues to employ a common law system, which works in combination with state and federal statutes. As far as criminal laws are concerned, each state has its own penal code which defines what is or is not a crime, the severity of any offense and its punishment.

Felonies and Misdemeanors

Criminal cases are generally categorized as felonies or misdemeanors based on their nature and the maximum imposable punishment. Each state is free to draft new criminal laws, so long as they are deemed constitutional. Thus, what is a crime in one state may not necessarily be a crime in a neighboring state.

A felony involves serious misconduct that is punishable by death or by imprisonment for more than one year. Most state criminal laws subdivide felonies into different classes with varying degrees of punishment. Crimes that do not amount to felonies are typically called misdemeanors. A misdemeanor is misconduct for which the law prescribes punishment of no more than one year in prison. Lesser offenses, such as traffic and parking tickets, are often called infractions.

Police Investigate, Prosecutors File Charges

Many people think that police officers (who investigate crimes) also charge offenders. That is a common misconception. Police gather evidence and sometimes also testify in court. But prosecutors including district attorneys, United States Attorneys and others ultimately decide whether a suspect is prosecuted or not.

Criminal Defense Lawyers

A qualified criminal defense attorney is often a crucial advocate for anyone charged with a crime. These attorneys are very familiar with local criminal procedures and laws some may have even first worked as prosecutors. Most defense lawyers should be able to handle any misdemeanor or low-level crime. But not all lawyers are qualified to handle serious charges. Some courts don’t allow inexperienced attorneys to represent defendants facing capital punishment, for example.

So whether you were arrested for a crime against a person (like assault and battery, rape, or murder), a crime against property (like shoplifting, burglary, or arson), or a drug crime (marijuana possession or cocaine dealing), a criminal defense lawyer can help.

Findaw’s Criminal Law section has a wealth of information that covers most criminal law situations. We have definitions of dozens of common crimes, an overview of stages in a typical criminal case, tips on your constitutional rights, information on criminal records, juvenile crime and much more.

Hometown Banking At Its Best

There are several factors that distinguish us as a real community bank. First, we are locally run. Decisions are made by people who know you and care about your needs. As a result, you gain from our responsive service and true understanding of what this community needs. Through this understanding we can tailor products to meet the needs of local consumers.

Second, there is on-site control over all services, products, loan approvals, and interest rates. Because we’re locally managed, we can set our rates right here. We don’t have to get them approved by a corporate office somewhere else. And we don’t have the overhead that big banks do, so we can pass the savings on to you.

Third, deposits of the bank are invested back into the community in the form of business and residential loans. So in a way, you can help enhance your hometown, just by being a part of community banking.

Finally, we are dedicated to the financial support of the local community in order to make it a better place to live.

What Is A Community Bank?

Community banking begins with the customer, his or her wants and needs. It sounds simple, but most banks just don’t get it.

People want a bank where they’re known by name and made to feel welcome as soon as they come in the door. When one of our staff says, “May I help you?” they really want to help you. No one ever has to pay a fee for using a teller.

People want the kind of bank that will service them for life. Where parents can take their kids to learn about banking and saving, and maybe meet the bank’s president. Where older kids can get help all the way through college. Where all of a family’s financial events from the household checking account to trust and estate planning will be as important to the bank as they are to the family. It is where our senior generations can find security and comfort in specially tailored senior products and services that meet their unique needs.

People want to keep it local. A bank’s management should live a local phone call away, and be involved with community events. The bank should become an important part of the community, help it solve its problems and plan for its future. A bank should be a good neighbor, friendly, helpful and generous.

Innovative Products and a Friendly Smile Set Us Apart From the Competition

We are the bank you are looking for. We are big enough to handle $50 million loans to businesses in the area, yet small enough to hand out cookies and coffee when you come in the bank, lollipops to kids, and even dog biscuits to “man’s best friend”. We’re large enough to handle the most complex Trust and Wealth Management issues or able to provide you a simple FREE checking account, and when you call, we’ll answer the phone and know you by name. Whether your business needs to refinance its office building or your daughter needs a mortgage for her first home, we’ll get it done for you. We have the resources of the big banks (at least the same, if not better solutions) paired with the best customer service. We’re never too busy to sit down with you and talk over a cup of coffee. So stop by and find out how great hometown banking can really be. You’ll be glad you did.

Sheet Metal Hand Brake Machines by Chicago Dreis Krump

Our metal benders are available in standard straight bending or Box Pan brake style, floor mounted or benchtop and even push button control with hydraulic power. A sheet metal hand brake normally bends sheet metal by using a hinged clamping bar to hold the metal down against the bed. A hinged bending “leaf” is lifted to fold the metal around the fulcrum point of the clamping bar to the desired angle which is controlled using a stop rod.
A box and pan brake machine is needed to avoid having the metal hit against the clamping bar when the 3rd and 4th sides are being bent. This is done by removing a “finger” from the clamping bar at each end of the box since the clamping bar is divided up into many sub-assemblies called “fingers”.

Chicago Dreis Krump offers more machine options: Extension Fingers are used to form inside corners with a return flange across the top. See pictures above and down below. Open End Fingers are used to form tubes of triangular, square, rectangular, or tapered shape. See picture below. Radius Nose Bars are available for bending your metal around a radius, which is useful for bending aircraft aluminum. See picture below. An insert bar is used to form offset (“zig-zag”) bends close together. Radius formers are attachments used for hand forming of thin sheet metal shapes such as gutters, architectural mouldings and prototype modeling.

Don’t settle for a poorly engineered machine. Since the Chicago Dreis & Krump Company pioneered the standard sheet metal bending Hand Brake in the year 1899, lots of people have copied their designs, but none have been able to surpass their quality, engineering, dependability, or options, then or now. Available options include a handwheel back gauge, extra small insert bar, radius formers, open end fingers, extension fingers, radius nose bars, and even push button hydraulic powered metal bending.
For even more info, click for our instructions How to use a Sheet Metal Brake .
If you need parts for your old Chicago Dreis & Krump machine; CLICK HERE to see a parts list.
If you dont want use the strength of your back and arms to manually bend metal on a Hand Brake machine, we offer a push button electric-hydraulic power leaf brake machine to do the same work.
Also see the new innovative magnetic powered hand brake down below.

Below is a conversion chart that converts sheet metal gauge numbers into metal thickness.

STANDARD SHEET METAL HAND BRAKE:

Chicago Dreis & Krump heavy duty machinery construction. Designed for accurate and economical bending of standard and special design forms. Ideal for bending mild steel with a 1 inch minimum flange to the rated capacity of the machine. Capable of 1/4 inch reverse bends on lighter metal. Even usuable for occassional hemming.

Options most hand brakes can’t offer:
Handwheel Back Gauge – 25 inch travel to measure and square up your metal (see below)
Insert Bar – 1/4 inch (for closer offset bends)
Radius Formers – for forming gutters, mouldings, prototypes, etc, from thin sheet metal.

NOTE: Mild Steel = 55,000 psi tensile strength and Stainless Steel = 90,000 psi tensile strength

BOX & PAN SHEET METAL HAND BRAKE: See chart below.
Incorporates all of the outstanding features of the standard hand brake plus removable, sectioned fingers that can bend any length of metal from 3 inches long to the full length of the machine. Boxes and pans can be up to 6 inches deep. A very versatile well built Chicago Dreis & Krump machine.

Options most hand brakes can’t offer:
Handwheel Back Gauge with 25″ travel to measure and square up your metal (see below)
Extension Fingers (to form rigid inside corners with a return flange across the top)
Open End Fingers (to form tubes of triangular, square, rectangular, or tapered shape)
Radius Nose Bars up to 1.5″ (great for aluminum aircraft work)
Insert Bar – 1/4 inch (for closer offset bends)
Radius Formers – for forming gutters, mouldings, prototypes, from thin sheet metal.

Add an optional Chicago Dreis & Krump Back Gauge:

Who says a hand brake can’t have sophistication?
Tired of always using a tape measure to mark lines that must be lined up with the nose bar? This back gauge has a 25 inch travel with a inch/cm scale so it is a must for those who want a labor saving, time saving, accuracy improving hand cranked back gauge to speed up production and improve quality. It measures where your metal bend will be and it squares up your metal to the machine.

BENCHTOP / PORTABLE SHEET METAL HAND BRAKE

Tabletop Standard Sheet Metal Brake:

The full featured machines are constructed with hefty steel weldments using brass hinge pins for smooth operation and trouble free forming. Clamp handles include plastic covers for positive grip. Their easy operation, precision performance, portability and cost make them perfect for light duty table top use, on-site work, sheet metal shops, industry and vocational schools.

A strong 6 ton magnet in the bed is activated by foot pedal or push button control to hold down a mild steel clamping bar of almost any configuration across the bed width or bed length. The sheet metal is pinned between the magnetic mild steel clamping bar. The bottom bending leaf is lifted to make the bend. The steel clamping bar can be made of straight bars (of various widths for tight boxes) for straight bends or segmented clamping bars for box and pan applications of any other configuration such as totally enclosed boxes, triangles, alternate bends on varying planes, round items such as scrolling applications, and much more. Great for bending mild steel sheet metal, stainless steel, aluminum, coated materials, and heated plastics. The bottom leafs bending extension can be removed for the tightest bends. The scaled stroke angle control can be set for repeat bends. Parts supports and adjustable back gauge for production runs, easy to use gap adjustments on the clamping bars for different sheet metal thicknesses.

Cloud tax – upsets Chicago tech community: Life just got 9 percent

‘Cloud tax’ upsets Chicago tech community: ‘Life just got 9 percent harder’

Chicago’s new 9 percent tax on streaming and cloud services appears to have the local technology community agitated and, more than anything, confused.

Reports on Wednesday of the “cloud tax” took many Chicagoans by surprise, leaving providers and consumers of streaming and cloud services scrambling to understand the implications. Technology companies, among the heaviest users of cloud services, are likely to be taxed for the services they use as well as those they provide.

The cloud tax extends ordinances governing two types of taxes — the city amusement tax and the city personal property lease transaction tax. The taxes cover many products streamed to businesses and residents. They also cover use of various online databases that could especially affect businesses.

The city expects the taxes to bring in about $12 million a year.

Adrian Holovaty, founder of music-education web platform Soundslice. said he doesn’t know how the tax changes affect his business.

Holovaty’s questions include which of his subscribers should be taxed; whether he should be tracking his user’s physical locations; and how the city will enforce tax collection.

“I’m trying to hold off on being frustrated or angry until I actually understand what the new rules are,” Holovaty wrote in an email to Blue Sky. “But at face value, it seems like this new policy flies in the face of Mayor Emanuel’s efforts to build the tech community here.”

Confusion is driving widespread anger over last week’s quiet enactment of a “cloud tax” in Chicago, said Harper Reed ⇒. technologist and CEO of mobile commerce startup Modest.

“We need clarity on what it actually means, what it actually means for all of us,” Reed said. “What, as businesses, we.

Several in the Chicago tech industry criticized the mayor and the city for creating an environment that they see as less friendly to tech startups than other places around the country.

Terry Howerton ⇒. co-founder at TechNexus, a private-sector venture collaborative, said the rulings do not properly define categories such as “cloud computing,” leaving them open to apply to almost any company.

“Every tech startup in Chicago is either using cloud computing services or selling them, and the city being the first to set this precedent puts us at a disadvantage to every other major tech hub. or even our own suburbs,” Howerton wrote in an email to Blue Sky.

Blagica Bottigliero, an Oak Park resident and longtime member of Chicago’s tech community who now serves as VP of digital media for California-based Metaverse Mod Squad, said the additional tax makes Chicago a less attractive location for startups.

John Byrne and Amina Elahi

Chicagoans who pay to stream movies and music from services like Netflix and Spotify will now need to fork over an additional 9 percent for the privilege, as will Chicago businesses that pay to use everything from real estate to court databases online, under a decision the city quietly made recently.

(John Byrne and Amina Elahi)

“I wouldn’t be surprised if people look at other alternatives of places to go to that are near the city,” Bottigliero said.

She said she understands that the city needs to add revenue but that doing it this way hurts startups.

Michael Reever, VP of government affairs at the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, criticized the taxes as quick, insufficient fixes to larger fiscal problems.

“Given the economic climate and the economic picture, this is a step backward to making Chicago a tech hub,” Reever said.

Justin Massa ⇒. founder of restaurant data startup Food Genius, said his company has been using cloud services efficiently but that they remain his second-biggest expense after labor. Food Genius can handle the 9 percent cost increase for those services, Massa said, but it’s “not insignificant.”

Beyond the additional dollars Food Genius will owe, Massa expressed concern about how the tax will affect sales. Food Genius customers pay a subscription to access its cloud-based database.

“To customers that we call on in the city of Chicago, we just got 9 percent more expensive,” Massa said. “For anyone selling cloud services, life just got 9 percent harder.”

Printers Row, a Chicago Neighborhood Visit from Chicago Traveler

Printer’s Row

Among Chicagoans, Printer’s Row has acquired some measure of fame in past years. The area has a reputation for being eclectic and interesting, artistic and tightly-woven. Upon visiting this autonomous little haven, it becomes immediately clear that its reputation is well-deserved.

Dearborn Station

Dearborn Station Chicago

Printer’s Row is one of Chicago’s relatively newer residential neighborhoods. and yet it boasts a long history in this city. In the late nineteenth century the area was once home to Chicago’s printing and publishing industry. as well as the city’s main passenger train hub, Dearborn Street Station .

Dearborn Station, located at the southern end of Chicago Printer’s Row, is a landmark of this neighborhood. Opened in 1885, the station was the primary departure point for passenger trains to the West. The Santa Fe Railway operated through this station, running several trains daily from Chicago to Los Angeles. During the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s, celebrities were spotted riding these trains on an almost daily basis.

Dearborn Station was also once the point of arrival for thousands of immigrants to the city. For many Chicagoans, the station is part of their family’s history. In the 1980’s, the station was converted into retail and office space, but it still serves a reminder of the area’s history.

Printer’s Row

Named for its origin as the heart of Chicago’s printing and publishing industry, Printer’s Row hosted several businesses of this kind in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The remnants of these businesses can still be seen around the area; buildings are still known by their original publishing house names, and many even have original signage.

Today, Printer’s Row Chicago retains its connection to its literary history with an Annual Book Fair. held each June. Started in 1984, this Printer’s Row festival draws booksellers and readers from all over the city and surrounding suburbs. Hundreds of stalls span both Dearborn and Harrison, and almost any book in any edition can be found. The Book Fair offers rare editions, cheap hardcover and paperback, finely bound books. etc; whatever your interest, it can be found here in good supply. Even music lovers can find interesting and eclectic albums at the Book Fair. Also featured at the Book Fair are a number of guest speakers, including various authors and poets.

The Neighborhood

Printer’s Row Park

Today’s residents of Printer’s Row live in a variety of buildings. Many of these used to be printing plants and publishing houses that have been converted into Printer’s Row apartments. Residents are attracted to the area by its proximity to the Loop ; most people who live in Printer’s Row are able to walk to work.

Yet despite its South Loop location. Chicago Printer’s Row feels like a small, family-oriented neighborhood. It is a self-contained community, with a flower shop, dry cleaners, restaurants, several bookshops, convenience stores, realtors and even the nearby Hilton Chicago . It’s all here. There is even a community center, Grace Place (637 S. Dearborn), that offers both Episcopalian and Jewish services. In the evening, people can be found dining on the sidewalk outside various restaurants. Well-lit and abuzz with quiet chatter, Printer’s Row Chicago is cozy and welcoming at night. Unlike the rest of the Loop, this area does not fall asleep at 6 pm. And best of all, everyone knows everyone else. Truly, this is one of the most valuable aspects of the neighborhood.

One of the most charming niches in Printer’s Row is Printer’s Row Park. This is a tiny square in the center of the neighborhood; a few benches are placed at the edges and there is a lovely fountain in the center. There are always a few people sitting on the benches, having a quiet moment, and although the square is very small, it does indeed offer a meditative stillness to those who enter it.

Chicago Printer’s Row boasts a certain pride in its history. There are small plaques on several of the older buildings around the area, describing that building’s history and its place on Printer’s Row. The Transportation Building at 600 S. Dearborn is an example of one of these historical buildings, as is the Donohue Building at 711 S. Dearborn. Both of these buildings have been converted into loft-style apartments, but retain a connection to their origins. They are decorated with plaques and their lobbies are filled with framed pictures of the buildings in their early years.

The Community

Printer’s Row Street Chicago

The inhabitants of Chicago Printer’s Row have a history of being a rather diverse group. In the 1970’s, the original residents were mostly artists, photographers and writers. Today, as real estate prices in Printer’s Row skyrocket, the area is attracting more businessmen than ever before. Although many artists and writers still live in the area, they bought their homes years ago; these days, professionals such as lawyers and financiers are the ones who can afford to move in.

Yet despite the changing demographics, the neighborhood does retain its eclectic mix. Columbia College students still live throughout the neighborhood, and the local blues club, Buddy Guy’s Legends (754 S. Wabash), and small bookstores and boutique shops still draw a varied clientele. While some inhabitants do fear that the artistic, mellow vibe that characterizes Chicago Printer’s Row will fade, most are doing everything in their power to help their neighborhood retain its flavor.

Printer’s Row at Sunset Chicago

Small businesses such as Sandmeyer’s Bookstore (714 S. Dearborn), Hackney’s Pub (733 S. Dearborn) and Gourmand Coffee and Teas (728 S. Dearborn) are in little danger of being overrun by larger chains; people who know these small venues love them, and there is a distinct aura of loyalty protecting the businesses. Most of the small businesses along Printer’s Row have regulars; neighborhood people frequent the stores and feel that they are doing their part to preserve that which they love about their community.

Certainly, the Printer’s Row neighborhood is a rarity; a close-knit community in the middle of a large, anonymous urban matrix.

Bankruptcy Filing Fees and Costs #bankruptcy #lawyers #chicago #il

Bankruptcy Filing Fees and Costs

When you file for bankruptcy, you must pay a filing fee and costs associated with credit counseling. If you can t afford the filing fee, you might qualify to pay in installments or for a waiver of the entire fee.

Here s the rundown of what you must pay, when you must pay it, and how to qualify for a fee waiver or installment payments.

Fees to File a Bankruptcy Petition

Effective June 1, 2014, the total fees you must pay to file a bankruptcy petition are:

  • $335 for Chapter 7
  • $310 for Chapter 13, and
  • $275 for Chapter 12.

The bankruptcy court increases these fees from time to time. You can always find the most up-to-date fees on the website of the U.S. Courts at www.uscourts.gov .

Fee Waivers and Paying the Fee Installments

Normally, the filing fee is due when you file your petition. However, there are two exceptions — you may ask the court if you can pay the fee in installments, or you can request that the court waive the fee entirely.

Application to Pay the Filing Fee in Installments

You may ask the court to allow you to pay your filing fee in installments. To do this, you file Form 3A Application and Order to Pay Filing Fee in Installments. On the form, you must state that you cannot pay the fee except in installments and then propose a schedule for payment of the entire fee. Your proposed payment schedule cannot have more than four installments, and the final payment cannot be later than 120 days after you file the petition.

Application for Fee Waiver

You can ask the court to waive the filing fee. If the court waives the fee, you don t have to pay it. In order to qualify for a fee waiver, you:

  • must not be able to pay in installments, and
  • your income must be below 150% of the poverty line (you can get official poverty line figures from your bankruptcy court).

You will have to file Form 3B Application for Waiver of Chapter 7 Filing Fee. In addition, you will have to appear in court so the judge can ask you questions.

Chapter 13: Fee Waivers and Installment Payments

Because you must have enough money to fund a repayment plan for three to five years in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, Chapter 13 filers will rarely qualify for a fee waiver.

Also, Chapter 13 filers cannot make further payments to their attorney until the filing fee is paid in full. In practice, this means that Chapter 13 filers will rarely be able to pay the fee in installments, since their attorneys will most likely require payment of some attorney fees up front.

Additional Costs Associated with Filing for Bankruptcy

When you file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you must get credit counseling from an approved provider within six months before your filing. You must also take a personal financial management course prior to getting your bankruptcy discharged.

Most approved credit counseling providers charge between $20 and $50 for the required counseling. Some don t charge anything. The law requires the agencies to provide counseling without regard to your ability to pay, so if you can t afford the counseling, let the agency know about this requirement.

The debtor education courses also cost about $50. If you can t afford the amount charged, you can ask that the fee be waived or that you be allowed to pay a lesser amount.

Chicago Hotels

Home to the world’s oldest skyscraper, the late 19 th -century Home Insurance Building, Chicago has a formidable reputation for its world-class performing arts scene and vast modern skyline.

This eclectic, vibrant melting pot is the third most populous city in the United States, and overlooks the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan, the source of the Chicago river system that flows into the Mississippi Valley. Chicago also hosts 36 parades each year, contains more than 500 parks, and boasts hundreds of tourist attractions ranging from acclaimed theatres to internationally revered art galleries.

Some of Chicago’s top attractions:

The Art Institute of Chicago

One of the most famous museums in North America, if not the world, the Art Institute of Chicago contains an extraordinary art collection that is only eclipsed by Paris’ Louvre in terms of its size. The venue, which was established in 1866, also has an extensive collection of North American artefacts and occupies an area of over 9 hectares.

The Willis Tower

Formerly known as the Sears Tower, at 442m high, the Willis Tower was built in the 1970s and was the world’s tallest building when it was completed. The most intriguing feature of this pioneering landmark is its Skydeck, which has moveable glass balconies that create the illusion that the visitor is almost ‘floating’ above the city.

The Field Museum of Natural History

Another world-famous exhibition venue, the Field Museum of Natural History was established in the 1920s and was built in a charismatic Classical Revival building. Here, you can observe millions of natural history exhibits from the modern day to the prehistoric period, some of which were exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World Fair.

The Navy Pier

More than 1km long, and completed in 1916, the Navy Pier is Chicago’s most popular family-friendly attraction, and stands above the Lake Michigan shore. From fantastic funfair rides to the Children’s Museum and the Shakespeare Theatre, this pier is guaranteed to provide hours of fun for people of all ages, and is open throughout the year.

Eating out

As you can probably imagine, there are literally thousands of restaurants to choose from near Chicago hotels although if you’re looking for some delicious steaks, you could consider Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak Stone Crab, the Bavette’s Bar and Boeuf, or Gibsons Bar Steakhouse. For other outstanding international-themed dishes, head to the Alinea restaurant, choose Mexique for some very vibrant Mexican flavours, dine at La Scarola for mouthwatering Italian recipes, or visit Shanghai Terrace for divine Chinese flavours.

Nightlife and hotels

Popular nightlife venues include the funky, 80s-inspired Berlin club, chic The Mid, clubbing hotspot Evil Olive and the glitter-painted Beauty Bar. For the ultimate hotel experience, consider The Langham, Thompson Chicago, a Thompson Hotel, Trump International Hotel Tower Chicago or The Talbott Hotel. For other stylish but more affordable accommodation venues, you can try the Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront or the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. Welcome to The Ferraro Law Firm – Tax Whistleblower Attorneys

Important News:

An IRS whistleblower submission filed in the infancy of the program by The Ferraro Law Firm resulted in a $38 Million award for one of our clients.

At The Ferraro Law Firm. those with information about tax underpayments can get the same high-quality representation that the largest corporations and wealthiest individuals enjoy. Big corporations and the super-rich spend millions of dollars on outside tax controversy counsel. The reason is that businesses need to defend the very types of underpayments you have discovered. With that in mind, ask yourself if it might not be time you had a tax whistleblower lawyer working for you—someone with the same type of experience who can fight effectively to protect your interests?

The IRS Whistleblower statute gives anyone with information about large-scale tax underpayments, including accounting errors, tax fraud or evasion, a significant financial incentive to report it. The IRS must give you up to 30% of any money they collect based upon your information.

If you believe that you have such information, contact The Ferraro Law Firm in Miami, Florida, for a confidential consultation.

Our tax whistleblower attorneys have over $100 billion in active IRS whistleblower submissions, and years of experience handling tax controversies and other complex tax matters for some of the world’s largest corporations and wealthiest individuals while practicing at some of the country’s largest and most prominent tax law firms. A DUI Lawyer Can Help

If you or a loved one is charged with a DUI offense in Illinois, you need the representation of an experienced and aggressive criminal defense attorney that focuses on DUI law.

Call (773) 299-8030 to get a free consultation with a DUI lawyer that will fight to get your driving privileges back!

Once someone gets a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) conviction in the state of Illinois, their license is automatically revoked. There are several things that must happen before a person’s license is reinstated.

    • Education and treatment.
Someone who has received a DUI and is asking for a reinstatement must prove to the state of Illinois that they have (a) learned their lesson and won’t be a risk to public welfare, (b) educated themselves on topics of alcohol, drugs, and safety and (c) received the appropriate treatment to address their needs. The treatment can include attending support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) for individuals deemed to be dependent on alcohol or drugs. Even after going through this extensive treatment process, however, the Secretary of State can deny reinstatement. Thus, it is important to have a lawyer who understands the nitty-gritty of the reinstatement process.

Free DUI Lawyer Consultation (773) 299-8030

  • First time DUI offense versus multiple offenses.
For someone who has received their first DUI offense, there are some options that don’t include license revocation. For instance, one possible solution is getting Court Supervision, which does not count as a conviction. Furthermore, first-time offenders can go through a process known as an Informal Hearing, rather than a Formal Hearing, which is required for multiple DUI offenses.

Free DUI Lawyer Consultation (773) 299-8030

  • DUI on an out of state license.
Individuals who have an out-of-state license while receiving a DUI in the state of Illinois will also face a conviction process, since almost all states have reciprocity agreements and exchange DUI information.

Free DUI Lawyer Consultation (773) 299-8030

Getting through the DUI conviction and license reinstatement process can be a difficult and life-changing journey. It starts with major life changes, education, and treatment. Having a DUI lawyer who can guide you through the process of getting your driver’s license reinstated is very important, a lawyer that will fight to get the best possible outcome. For instance, once you get to the informal or formal hearing, the State’s attorneys will cross examine you and ask you intimate details about your life. The State will try to prolong the reinstatement process.

Without an attorney present to guide you and defend you, this can be a grueling and unfavorable process. Garry Novak has been in this business a long time and has helped many drivers who got their licenses revoked. He knows the difficulties and understands the process. He will ensure you get a fair hearing and will protect your rights. To contact Garry and get started, call (773) 299-8030.

When you have been charged with a DUI offense, you need a good defense, a lawyer that knows how the Illinois DUI laws and will fight for your rights. Garry Novak is an experienced, criminal defense attorney that will do everything he can to get you your driving privileges back!

Every case is unique. Make sure your lawyer is extremely knowledgeable and capable of giving the attention your case deserves.

Call Garry Novak at (773) 299-8030 immediately to protect your rights, starting from the field sobriety tests, and throughout the DUI process.

    Rabies

In the U.S. we are lucky to have very few cases of rabies in humans. Through vaccination and education, most domesticated animals and humans are immune to this deadly disease. However, each year there still are a few cases, and in other parts of the world, the disease is killing tens of thousands every year.

    What Is Rabies?

Rabies is a Latin term that means madness, which fits this disease and its symptoms. Rabies is a virus that attacks warm-blooded animals and can be spread through the saliva and blood. Almost all rabies virus infections begin with a bite from an infected animal. transferring the virus from the animal’s saliva into the victim through the skin.

Once the virus has been transmitted, it makes its way slowly along the peripheral nerves to the central nervous system and eventually to the brain. This incubation period can last as few as two days and up to 12 weeks or longer. Once the virus infects the central nervous system, symptoms will begin to show and there is a quick progression in the disease. Once symptoms have started, the disease is almost always fatal within 12 days, over 99% of the time.

There are three stages of the disease. The first stage is fever, headaches and possible behavioral changes. In stage two, the infected person or animal becomes violent and with uncontrolled movements. They will experience pain and partial paralysis. The third and last stage will have periods of mania and more paralysis, causing drooling and loss of control of facial and throat muscles. Victims often then lapse into a coma and then die from respiratory failure.

Treatment for people who have contracted rabies from dog bites

For rabies, there is treatment but it must be performed before the person begins to have symptoms, basically before the virus reaches the central nervous system. This is called post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP. If a person has been bit or exposed to rabies, the wound should be thoroughly washed with soap and water. They then would receive a series of injections. The victim would receive 1 dose of human rabies immunoglobulin and four doses of rabies vaccine over a two-week period. If started right away, PEP is 100% effective in killing the rabies virus.

Realistically, how likely is it to contract rabies from a dog bite?

In the U.S. there are only 1-2 human rabies cases per year, usually from bites from infected bats or other small animals where the bite was not noticed and therefore, not treated. In Asia and Africa, there are an estimated 55,000 deaths per year from rabies. India is the country leading the world with about 20,000 deaths from rabies per year, followed by Vietnam and Thailand.

Prevention of rabies starts with dog vaccinations

In the U.S. and other nations such as the UK, Australia and Japan, rabies has been all but eliminated in domestic animals. The use of vaccines in humans and animals, including baiting wild animals and feeding them oral vaccines, has been effective in reducing the amount of infected animals. Rabies is generally preventable when national resources are used to eradicate the disease. Unfortunately, until these tactics are used in all countries, there will continue to be high levels of deaths each year from this deadly virus.

Chicago dog bite attorneys who appreciate the dangers of rabies and other injuries related to canine attacks in Illinois

The popularity of home breeding of dogs has greatly increased the liklihood that a person may contract rabies or another type of infection from a dog bite. While nothing can undo the damage related to a dog attack. Illinois law requires the owner of an animal to pay for all damages and medical care necessitated by an attack. Dog bite attorneys at Chicago Injury Center have recovered millions of dollars in compensation for dog bite victims across the Midwest. If you or your child was injured by a canine, we invite you to talk with our team about your legal rights.

    #

Illinois is a state of great diversity, from the booming metropolis of Chicago to the far-reaching fields of the southern part of the state. Rural, urban, and everything in between co-exist peacefully in Illinois, and the residents of the state are proud of this fact.

However, when it comes to car insurance, where you live can be a major factor in how much you pay, so residents of some parts of Illinois pay far more than others for their automobile insurance.

The average automobile insurance cost for the state of Illinois is $1,047, well below the national average of $1,671. Even Chicago enjoys lower insurance premiums than the national average; Chicago citizens pay an average of $1,290 for yearly car insurance renewals.

Other cities in Illinois reflect the lower-priced trend of automobile insurance across the state: Rockford averages $1,007 per year; Aurora averages $1,178 per year; Peoria averages $994 per year, or close to half the national average; Joliet averages $1,132 per year; and Springfield averages $1,017 per year.

Clearly, rural areas in Illinois have lower average automobile insurance premium rates for all drivers, but the whole of the state is still well below the national average.

It is helpful to remember when comparing automobile insurance averages that these figures are derived from all types of drivers and vehicles. Individual characteristics play a far greater role than simple location in determining automobile insurance premium prices, and age, gender, and driving record may skew averages tremendously.

A young man living in Chicago who has several speeding violations and is driving a sports car, for example, will obviously pay much more for insurance than a middle-aged married woman in Chicago driving a sedan with a clean driving record. However, averages are useful as a “pulse point” for comparing rates in various locations throughout the United States.

The young man in Chicago with a sports car will still pay less than a young man in California with the same car, because California’s average insurance premiums are much higher than those found in Illinois.

Illinois is a tort-liability state, and requires a minimum of $20,000 per individual and $40,000 per accident in liability coverage for every driver. Illinois law also requires proper damage liability coverage in a minimum amount of $15,000, and uninsured motorist coverage with limits the same as those for liability.

If a driver chooses higher liability limits or adds comprehensive and collision coverage, his or her premiums will naturally be higher than those of drivers with minimum coverage. The deductible amounts for each policy can be adjusted to bring insurance costs down, as well.

When you buy your Illinois automobile insurance will also have an effect on premium price. For example, prices tend to be lowest in March and rise slowly through May in time for the “summer peak” when more people are on the roads and accident rates are higher.

Similarly, October through December sees a reduction in price, but in January, when ice and snow are common road hazards, prices rise once again then drop in time for spring. The lowest-priced months in which to purchase car insurance were March at an average of $984 statewide, June at an average of $974, and December at an average of $972, according to data from the past year.

The highest-priced months for the past year were May at an average of $1,089, September at an average of $1,066, and January at an average of $1,094.

You can always find the lowest prices for Illinois car insurance by entering your ZIP code on our website and beginning the process of a free online quote comparison from major insurance companies.

Bankrupt Gander Mountain to liquidate 32 stores nationwide

    Dive Insight:

Fierce competition in sporting goods retail and in some cases debt loads are catching up to retailers that may have overextended themselves or failed to keep up with evolving trends and changing customer demands. Gander Mountain succumbed to those challenges on March 10 when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Gander, however, is hardly the only one in trouble. Sports Authority, once the largest sporting goods chain in the U.S. was hobbled by mounting debt, weak e-commerce returns and failures to meet increasing challenges in the space, and ultimately filed for bankruptcy and liquidated last year. Dick’s Sporting Goods meanwhile was able to snap up its intellectual property and many of its stores.

Eastern Outfitters, which includes discount retailer Bob’s Stores and outdoor retailer Eastern Mountain Sports, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month; that retailer is owned by private equity firm Versa Capital Management. Versa last year took over those units from Vestis Retail Group, which previously shuttered regional sports retailer Sport Chalet. (Versa also recently closed all remaining Wet Seal stores amid that teen apparel chain’s second bankruptcy in about two years.) Meanwhile, Cabela’s, which like Gander is a major gun and ammunition seller, continues to struggle as it awaits the final word from the Federal Trade Commission regarding its proposed acquisition by privately held rival Bass Pro Shops.

Many of these retailers are offering the same brands and merchandise mix as each other, forcing them to compete on price. And gun sales in particular, which have mostly fallen in recent years, have been a drag on retailers, like Gander and Cabela’s, that are dependent on them. “Gander Mountain is well-known for carrying today’s most sought-after brands,” Scott Carpenter, President of its retail solutions division. “Many of these brands are rarely, if ever, discounted, so shoppers will want to come in early to take advantage of these sales while selection lasts.”

REI, though, is successfully swimming against the tide, thanks to a loyal, largely membership-based following, a highly curated merchandise mix that includes many products not found everywhere else and an emphasis on customer experience in stores and out. Its award-winning Black Friday #OptOut campaign for the past two holiday seasons has fostered its emphasis on experience and helped REI garner loads of attention despite shuttering its retail operations that day.

RA and Lung Disease: What You Need to Know

Besides the joints, the inflammatory process that underlies rheumatoid arthritis (RA) also affects other parts of the body, including lungs, skin, eyes, digestive system, heart and blood vessels. RA-related lung complications are the most common extra-articular ( outside of the joints ) manifestations of RA and include pulmonary nodules (small growths in the lungs); pleural effusion (a buildup of fluid between the lung and chest wall); bronchiectasis (damage to the airways); and interstitial lung disease (ILD).

In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 10 people with rheumatoid arthritis will develop ILD over the course of their disease, making it as deadly among people with RA as congestive heart failure.

    What Is Interstitial Lung Disease?

Interstitial lung disease refers to a group of disorders characterized by inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. In the case of RA-associated ILD, the scarring is caused when the over-active immune system attacks the lungs. When the scarring builds up over time, breathing becomes difficult, and patients may need lung transplants to regain function.

Risk Factors for Interstitial Lung Disease

The risk of developing lung disease is eight times higher in people with RA than in the general population. However, most people with RA are not affected. Risk factors for ILD include:

    • Smoking. People with RA who smoke are more likely to develop ILD.

Higher RA disease activity. High levels of rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptides (antiCCP) antibodies substances that are indicative of more active disease increase the risk for development of ILD.

Older age at diagnosis. People who are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis after age 60 are more likely to develop ILD.

Male Gender. Men with RA have a two-to-three times higher risk of developing ILD than women.

Treatment with methotrexate and other DMARDs. Several DMARDs, including methotrexate, leflunomide and azathioprine, as well as biologics, particularly tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, have been associated with RA-ILD, according to a literature review published in the April 2014 issue of Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism. But Dr. Teng Moua, a pulmonologist specializing in ILD at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. says the risk of methotrexate-induced lung injury is less than 1 percent and is reversible once the drug is stopped. According to Dr. Moua, the benefits of methotrexate far outweigh its risks. However, methotrexate is not recommended for people with existing ILD or RA-ILD by the American College of Rheumatology in their 2012 guidelines.

    Diagnosis of Interstitial Lung Disease

It is challenging to catch ILD early because it doesn t cause any specific symptoms. Once shortness of breath and dry cough develop, the disease has probably already progressed.

The diagnostic process includes a comprehensive clinical exam, X-rays and lung function tests. If there are risk factors for ILD or abnormal X-ray findings, your doctor will likely perform a high resolution CT.

    Treatment of Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease is hard to treat and has a high mortality rate. According to a 2010 study published in the journal Arthritis Rheumatism. once ILD was diagnosed, the average survival in patients with RA was 2.6 years.

People diagnosed with ILD in its early stages can be helped with medication such as corticosteroids and immunosuppressants and put on the waiting list for a lung transplant sooner. However, these treatments don t work for everyone. The best approach is to treat the underlying RA, although ILD may get worse despite well controlled arthritis.

Future Direction in Interstitial Lung Disease

Researchers say an important task for the medical community is to understand the mechanisms behind the development of ILD in people with RA. More detailed knowledge of these processes may one day open doors to better treatments.

Also needed are comprehensive guidelines for screening and diagnosing ILD in at-risk patients so they can be found and treated earlier.

How Can You Protect Your Lungs?

Don t smoke. Get flu and pneumonia vaccines (but always check with your doctor before getting any vaccinations). If you re taking immunosuppressant medications for your RA, you may be at a higher risk for illnesses like the flu and pneumonia, which may cause further lung-related complications. Have regular check-ups, so your doctor can monitor your lungs regularly. Tell your doctor if you have shortness of breath or dry cough right away.

    Cheap Hotels In Chicago, IL

Great location but hotel itself needs improvement

Great location, walking distance to Michigan Ave, various bus and L stops. Clean, and staff was very helpful. Doormen were super friendly! However, for downtown Chicago and the price you pay, Mile North should make several improvements. We had multiple issues with our keycards. (They still use the older version of magnetic, inserting cards) We had a suite and the bed was a very uncomfortable, double (not even queen!) sized bed. Bathroom had no fan and no towel racks or robe hooks (other than inside the shower). Sink was inside the room with toilet and shower, making it difficult for a family of four to all get ready at once. We did not bring a car, but be aware that the parking was $62 PER DAY! Wifi is additional EVEN IN THE LOBBY. They will also automatically charge you a ridiculous resort fee for fitness center (which we never used) and a business center . (which was 2 iMacs in the middle of the lobby) Plan on paying additional for breakfast, too. The hotel boasts of a rooftop with spectacular views, however they do not allow access before 5pm and no one under 21. We asked if we could just take our kids up just for a few minutes during the day or before they opened as a bar and were told no, which was surprising. The lobby bar closed at 10:30pm even on weekends (never stayed at a hotel which the bar closed that early) and the rooftop bar had private events 2 out of 3 nights we were there. If one wanted a late-night drink, you’d be out of luck.

Nice Hotel in the Heart of River North

At first our check in was delayed because our room wasn’t ready at 5 PM. I spoke to the front desk about the need to get ready for our dinner reservations at 630. They were very accommodating by giving us a free room upgrade and a discount at the the Primehouse restaurant on site (which I would also recommend when you visit). The studio suite was spacious and comfortable for the wife and I. Beautiful bathrooms with robes. This hotel is just off Michigan Avenue so very close to shopping and the Chicago River. I look forward to staying here once again when we return to Chicago.

    Chicago Hotel & Travel Guide

As Nelson Algren once famously penned, “Chicago is an October sort of city even in spring.” While we’d be delighted to tell you that the Windy City boasts golden and rust-colored foliage year-round, it’d be more accurate to assume Algren was writing about the feeling the city gives you while walking out of the many Chicago hotels. Although you’ll feel small when walking in the shadow of the Willis Tower and while gazing at the behemoth cats inside the Lincoln Park Zoo, the city emanates a warmness that will make you feel like you’ve been there your whole life—especially through the many autumns of your life. Cozy up inside one of the best places to stay in Chicago and let the city’s welcome soak in as you gaze out over the skyline.

    Things to do in Chicago

If you decide to stay at one of the hotels near O’Hare Airport. head downtown and let yourself wander aimlessly through the city; steely skyscrapers rise up all around you, but your feet will eventually carry you to Navy Pier. From the unique position of the pier, you can look back at the city and get a sense of its grandeur. A quick ride on the Navy Pier Ferris wheel will leave you feeling infatuated with the Windy City and its scenic views of Lake Michigan. Afterward, bid the choppy slate-colored waters adieu and head toward the Magnificent Mile. You’ll try your darndest to take it all in, but with sparkling lights announcing the names of department stores, artisan boutiques, art galleries, and quaint cafes, you’ll need more than a magnificent minute to explore all the shopping and entertainment the area has to offer.

You return shopping bags stuffed to the brim to your Chicago lodging but are still itching to explore the Midwestern city. Set out from a boutique hotels in Chicago to see one of the most iconic spots in the city—Wrigley Field. Home to the Chicago Cubs, the stadium has seen more than its fair share of victories, losses, and die-hard fans pass through its hallowed halls. The crowd’s heartfelt cheers will have you sitting on the edge of your seat as men in white, blue, and red take to the mound to instill a bit of hometown pride. And while you might be tempted to load up on traditional baseball fare, such as a piping hot Chicago dog, you’re better off waiting until you exit the stadium to enjoy a Midwestern feast.

    Eating and Drinking

The city is teeming with diverse culinary options to explore. But first things first, you need to try the dish that has become iconic in this region of the United States—the deep dish, that is. As you sit down at an unassuming pizza joint and admire its classic red cups, you overhear a local speaking to another diner. “I only eat here when I’m showing tourists around, real Chicagoans don’t eat deep-dish on the regular.” You laugh as the waiter nudges you and whispers, “He’s in here every week.” The dish might be carb-centric, but you find that locals and tourists alike are drawn to the doughy haven known as deep-dish pizza. Your mouth will be watering as you prepare yourself to take a bite of the flaky, buttery pizza crust cooked in a deep pan, topped with crumbling seasoned sausage, a mountain of gooey cheese, and homemade tomato sauce—an Italian cherry on top.

You’re not sure you can eat anymore, but as you walk through Chicago’s various neighborhoods, you feel yourself salivating once again. In Chinatown, your nostrils are accosted by the sweet and spicy smells of roast duck hanging in charming windows, while in Pilsen, you can’t help but guffaw over the array of Mexican eateries that call out to you with their colorful store fronts and promises of homemade tortillas. You decide to grab dinner in the West Loop; a decision your future self will thank you for. Known to be the neighborhood with the most contemporary restaurants, there’s always something new and delicious to sink your teeth into in the West Loop. Whether you’re looking for artisan charcuterie boards paired with a nice glass of red wine, comforting sauce-laden French food, or a cheeseburger that feels less dirty diner and more upscale American, you’ve come to the right place.

    Green Spaces Galore

Arguably, once you’ve finished sampling the best cuisine the city has to offer, you’ll want to walk it off. Millennium Park presents the ideal space for an after-dinner stroll before heading back to your hotel in Chicago. Not only does the expansive 25-acre space offer numerous lawns where you can walk, sit, watch the clouds roll in, and lazily lay to read your favorite book, but numerous public art installations as well.

You’ll want to fetch your camera from inside your leather satchel as you walk about Millennium Park. The most iconic art piece at the heart of the park is Cloud Gate, better known to locals as The Bean. The massive stainless steel installation is representative of the city as a whole, though it might be gray and steely, it attracts thousands of visitors and has drawn admiration from locals and tourists alike.

    Day Trips from Chicago

Rent a car and drive 148 miles northwest to Madison, Wisconsin. This charming city is oozing with personality, as well as its fair share of cheese curds and craft beer. Whether you spend your day out of Chi-town sampling the best brews the lakeside city has to offer or attending a live performance at the oldest venue in the city, Majestic Theatre, you’ll find you almost don’t want to leave. But the intoxicating promises of Chicago improv theatre and deep-dish pizza will have you returning to Illinois by the end of the evening.

    That Toddlin’ Town
