While Woodland Hills Private School is open to all students and not exclusively for gifted, talented and high achieving students, many families choose WHPS for the advanced and enriched academic program. Over the past few years, with the adoption of cutting-edge curriculum and enhanced teacher training, we have found new ways to help our high-achieving students reach new heights.

To that end, we were pleased this week to receive our students’ ERB results from the spring. This assessment compares our students to peers in private and independent schools across the country, and unlike the test children take in California public schools, the ERB uses a constructed response section to look at students’ thinking, not just multiple choice questions. Thus, it assesses critical thinking at a much deeper level.

Here are the results from this year’s graduating class:

LOGICAL THINKING: QUANTITATIVE REASONING, MATHEMATICS

  • 60% of our students scored in the 8thstanine, which means they were in the top 11% of students who tested nationally .
  • 87% of our students scored in the 7th stanine, which means they were in the top 23% of students who tested nationally .

LITERACY: READING, WRITING, VERBAL REASONING

  • 53% of our students scored in the 8th stanine, which means they were in the top 11% of students who tested nationally .
  • 73% of our students scored in the 7th stanine. which means they were in the top 23% of students who tested nationally.

Parents in grades 3-5 will be receiving their child’s individual ERB score report via email this week. Please watch for this email and don’t hesitate to contact the school office if you have any questions.

Child Custody

When parties to a divorce have children, they must work out a parenting plan outlining who has custody or visitation of the children and when. If the parents cannot agree to a custody arrangement, then either parent may petition the court for custody. Parents must petition the court which is overseeing their divorce, or if they are unmarried, the family or juvenile court in the county and state where the children reside.

Types of Custody and Visitation

Once a parent has petitioned for custody, the court will award either joint custody, which gives custody to both parents, or sole custody, which gives the primary care of the children or decision-making to just one parent, the “custodial parent.”

There are two types of custody: physical and legal. Physical custody is the actual physical care of the child, including day to day supervision and habitation. Legal custody involves decision-making rights, such as regarding the child’s education, health, and welfare.

When one parent is given primary custody, the other parent (non-custodial) usually gets visitation rights so that they still get time with their children. In most states, joint custody is preferred unless it would be detrimental to the child.

Custody Arrangements and Exchanges

Parents may work out any number of arrangements for both custody and visitation, such as having their children alternating weeks, weekends, split weeks, summers, split holidays, or holidays alternating by odd and even years.

Parents may also arrange a custody or visitation exchange, which involves the time, place, and manner in which the parents give their children over to each other. This exchange can be before or after school, on weekends, at one parent’s house, at a daycare facility, or any number of other times and places. In cases where there is animosity between the parents or previous domestic violence, the court can consider an exchange plan wherein neither parent sees the other.

Modifications and “Moveaways”

Once a parenting plan is approved and issued as an order by the court, it cannot be changed unless a party requests a modification and supports their motion with evidence of material changed circumstances. Even parents who wish to move to another state or county must petition the court to reevaluate custody and visitation before they can take their children with them.

Child Custody Third Party Rights

In some states, the courts may also consider the interests of third parties, such as siblings or grandparents, in having custody or visitation of a child. If the child has been abandoned by its parents, another adult may petition the court for custody. If siblings, grandparents or other interest parties desire visitation, they must also petition the court, which may award visitation rights if the court deems it to be in the child’s best interests.

Statutory requirements governing child custody issues vary from state to state and county to county; a child custody attorney with experience in your area can advise you on the particular rules at issue your case.

Iranian child asylum seeker wins payout over detention on Christmas Island

The Federal Government has agreed to pay a confidential settlement to a nine-year-old Iranian asylum seeker over her detention on Christmas Island.

Lawyers for the girl, who was five at the time she was detained, alleged she received inadequate care on Christmas Island where she was held for 13 months in 2013 and 2014.

It was argued the girl developed post-traumatic stress disorder, a recurrent dental infection, a stammer, separation anxiety and major depression.

The settlement between her lawyers and the Federal Government was approved by the Victorian Supreme Court ahead of an eight-week trial which was due to start today.

The terms of the settlement will remain confidential.

In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection said the Commonwealth does not admit liability.

“As this matter is still before the court in relation to some outstanding issues, it would not be appropriate for the department to comment further,” it said.

The girl, who cannot be identified, arrived on Christmas Island by boat with her family and now lives in Australia on a temporary bridging visa.

Photo: The girl’s litigation guardian, Sister Brigid Arthur, with Thomas Valentine, the lawyer who ran the case. (ABC News: Emma Younger)

Her litigation guardian, Sister Brigid Arthur, said the girl’s family was relieved the case had settled.

“While it’s an effort to get justice it’s also an extra trauma for them and an extra thing that they were waiting for a response to,” she said.

“Families in this situation just have an ongoing waiting, waiting, waiting.”

The case was initially launched as a class action on behalf of other asylum seekers who said they also suffered injury while being detained on the island.

About 35,000 people were held in offshore detention centres on Christmas Island in the period covered by the class action claim, between August 2011 and August 2014.

Asylum seekers urged to make claims

But the court earlier ruled the case should proceed as an individual claim only because claims made by the class action group members were too different.

Lawyer Thomas Ballantyne from Maurice Blackburn said despite the court refusing to hear the case as a class action, asylum seekers should be encouraged to make individual claims for compensation.

“This case really will have made subsequent cases a lot easier,” he said.

“It’s really important too that this litigation continues to shine a light on what happened on Christmas Island.

“So in that respect we’d also be hopeful that more people come forward.”

    Cerebral Palsy Lawyer

Obtain a Free Consultation with an Attorney

When a doctor, hospital or nurse fails to follow the proper standards of medical care during the delivery of a baby, the child could suffer a brain injury resulting in cerebral palsy. This could lead to substantial medical expenses and limit the child s ability to fully function independently for the rest of their life.

If you suspect that your child or a family member may have been injured at birth by a medical mistake that could have been prevented, the cerebral palsy lawyers at Saiontz Kirk, P.A. can help determine if the child may be entitled to compensation through a medical malpractice case. Request a free and confidential consultation .

    CEREBRAL PALSY CASES REVIEWED NATIONWIDE

    Cerebral Palsy
    Law Firm

Children diagnosed with cerebral palsy face a life-time of medical expenses and care. If a disability was caused by a medical mistake at the time of birth, a cerebral palsy lawyer at Saiontz Kirk can help pursue compensation and benefits.

The cerebral palsy lawyers at Saiontz Kirk, P.A. have investigated and reviewed claims for parents of children with cerebral palsy throughout the United States. Millions of dollars in cerebral palsy settlement benefits have been collected by our clients to provide compensation for a birth injury that was caused by a medical mistake.

Cerebral palsy can result from an injury to the baby s brain that is suffered before, during or immediately after birth. In many cases, the disabilty could have been prevented with the exercise of reasonable medical care.

Free consultations and claim evaluations are provided to help families determine whether their child may be entitled to financial compensation for a cerebral palsy birth injury.

EXAMPLES: Cases a Cerebral Palsy Lawyer
    Can Help a Family Investigate

After request a free and confidential consultation, one of our lawyers for cerebral palsy claims will review the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and delivery to help determine whether your family may be eligible to pursue a case.

NO ATTORNEY FEES OR EXPENSES UNLESS WE OBTAIN A RECOVERY FOR YOUR CHILD S CEREBRAL PALSY INJURY

All cases are pursued by our law firm under a contingency fee agreement. This means that there are never any out-of-pocket expenses for a cerebral palsy lawyer to represent your family, and we only receive an attorney fee after we are successful obtaining financial compensation for the child. If we do not win the case, there are no fees or expenses.

The benefits and compensation pursued by our medical malpractice lawyers can help children with cerebral palsy obtain the treatment and care they will need for the rest of their life.

There is a statute of limitations for ever cerebral palsy case, which requires that the claim be filed in court by a certain date. The deadlines depend on a number of circumstances and vary by state. Since time may be running out on your child s ability to pursue a case, contact a lawyer about any cerebral palsy claim as soon as possible.

    Digital Running Records on Raz-Plus

With our Online Running Record tool, Raz-Plus or Raz-Kids members can:

    • Assign and listen to recordings of Benchmark Passages and Books.
    • Score recordings using an online running record tool.

    BENCHMARK PASSAGES & RUNNING RECORDS

Find students’ instructional levels by assessing their reading skills with developmentally appropriate texts while recording reading behavior. Benchmark Passages are short text selections that are one part of a three-part process to help place students at their instructional levels for leveled reading sessions and to assess their readiness to progress to the next level.

    Why Benchmark Passages

Benchmark Passages assess comprehension and reward students’ progress from level to level. They are one part of a three-part process that provides a more complete assessment of reading behavior and comprehension than any of the parts independently.

    • Each level has 2 fiction and 2 nonfiction passages.
    • Each level has at least 1 fiction-nonfiction passage pair on the same topic.
    • Each passage uses a level-appropriate percentage of words from leveled books at that reading level.
      • aa-E = 100%
      • F-J = 95% + 5% new words
      • K-Z = 90% + 10% new words
    • The text of the entire passage is used in the Running Record.
    • Most are one page long, but upper level passages can be two pages.
    • ALL are available on Raz-Plus .

    How to Use Benchmark Passages

    1. Give a student a Benchmark Passage he or she has never seen before to read aloud. If you prefer to use familiar text, use the fiction-nonfiction topic pair at each level. Use one passage from the pair to support a student’s understanding of the topic before assessing with the other passage.
    2. Record the student’s reading behavior using the passage’s Running Record form.
    3. If a student scores 90 percent, assess the student’s comprehension using a Quick Check from Level A-Z and Retelling Rubrics .
    4. If a student scores from 90%-94% percent on the running record and answers comprehension questions at 80%-100%, he or she is at an instructional level. (For more details, see About Running Records ).
    5. Use Benchmark WOWzers to reward students’ progress from level to level.

The Falsely Accused and Attorneys who represent them

This site is dedicated to those who have been falsely accused of some type of child abuse and for the attorneys who represent them.

The National Innocence Project has exonerated, based upon DNA evidence, hundreds of persons who were convicted of atrocious crimes including capital murder and/or rape. A large number of those persons had confessed to crimes they did not commit. Considering that most cases of child abuse do not involve DNA evidence, one can only guess at the number of people in prison that are innocent. The fact that a person has been accused or charged and, possibly, convicted of the crime does not mean that they were guilty of the crime. There are many reasons for this phenomena that are touched upon in this site.

In the large percent of sexual abuse cases, there is no physical evidence or eyewitnesses. Medical exams are routinely normal . Yet, people are still convicted based upon a complainant and hearsay/vouching testimony by so-called experts . Especially disturbing are the cases where repeated, penile pentration was alleged, yet the medical exam was normal with what is considered an intact hymen.

In alleged Shaken Baby and other alleged physical abuse cases, there is seldom a search for an equally competing hypothesis for causation of any injuries. In most cases, the presumption is made that the injurie(s) were non-accidental and therefore must have been inflicted by someone. What is not commonly known is that in many of these cases, there is a gigantic dispute among medical experts as to whether a particular injury was accidental versus non-accidental or whether there is some non-abusive cause of the condition or injury.

The search for the truth regarding a child abuse allegation involves The Law, the Science, the Myths, the Reality . No one wants a guilty child abuser to go unpunished. On the other hand, there is a sentiment in the general public that it is better to err on the side of safety which translates into that it is better to convict 10 innocent people to make sure we get the one guilty person . That is, unless they are the person accused or a family member or friend.

Justice can be served when people educate themselves on the issues involved and let reason, rather than emotion, rule the day. We seek justice not only for real victims, but for those who have been ajudged a child abuser when they have not abused anyone.

Master of Science in Clinical Child and School Psychology

Why Study Clinical Child and School Psychology at SIUE?

This program is highly unique as it is one of only a handful of combined clinical child and school psychology programs in the nation. It anticipated many developments in both school and clinical child psychology as it emphasizes prevention, the ecological/systems approach, and the consultative role of the psychologist. Further, the program focuses on evidence based practices, such as behavioral and cognitive interventions. Finally, practica experiences are seen as a critical and ongoing adjunct to the academic component of the program, with students engaging in practica every semester.

The program includes two tracks: the Clinical Child track and School Psychology track. These tracks are designed to serve the needs of two groups of students. Students in the Clinical Child track will be prepared to work with children, adolescents, and their families in the health system and other community agencies, under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers. Clinical child psychology students are also well-prepared to pursue doctoral education at other universities following completion of their Master’s degrees. Some clinical child students are interested in becoming licensed; for that reason, we provide a web page about licensure .

The School Psychology track prepares students with knowledge and skills necessary for further education and training in the specialist degree program in school psychology. Students pursuing certification in school psychology are admitted to the master’s degree program with the expectation that they will go on to complete the specialist degree program in school psychology. Students in the School Psychology Track who continue on for the specialist degree after completing the master’s degree are eligible for certification as school psychologists in Illinois.

Curriculum across both tracks is equivalent during the first four semesters of training; practicum experiences are provided across various types of settings. Coursework and training experiences during the second year of the program, and particularly the latter part, are increasingly focused on either Clinical Child or School psychology.

Unique Strengths of the SIUE Master s in Clinical Child and School Psychology

The program has a number of unique strengths that allow it to stand out as a premier program in the nation, which include:

    • One of only a few combined programs in the nation
    • Practica begins immediately, during students first semester, and continues every following semester.
    • Ongoing partnerships with local school districts, Head Start. juvenile detention, and other local agencies
    • Breadth of training, including courses in prevention, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention
    • One of less than ten school psychology programs in the nation to include a course on autism assessment and intervention
    • Hosts two clinics unique to the St. Louis region, which are the Attention Behavior Clinic (ABC) and the Comprehensive Autism Spectrum Evaluation (CASE) site
    • Program was established in 1970 and the Specialist Program in School Psychology has been continuously fully accredited by NASP since 1999
    • Students work closely with faculty to develop their own thesis or research project
    • Students commonly present research at the annual conferences of the National Association of School Psychologists, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, American Psychological Association, and other national organizations.
    • Students commonly coauthor research publications with program faculty.
    • Most importantly, you will learn from award-winning faculty!
    • Dr. Stephen Hupp received the SIUE Teaching Recognition Award in 2011.
    • Dr. Jeremy Jewell received the Mental Health Hero 2015 award from Wellspring Resources as well as the Vaughn Vandegrift Research Mentor award for the fall of 2012.
    • Dr. Elizabeth McKenney received the Extra Effort Award from Edwardsville School District 7 in 2014 and in 2013 received the Early Career Scholarship from the Trainers of School Psychologists.
    • In an analysis of publication productivity among school psychology faculty in all NASP-accredited, specialist-level programs (Laurent Runia, 2016 ), Drs. Jewell and Hupp were ranked the 24 th and 25 th most productive researchers in the U.S.A.
    • In the same analysis (Laurent Runia, 2016 ), SIUE’s school psychology graduate program was ranked seventh in the nation in scholarly productivity.

Due to a national shortage of school psychologists, job prospects are outstanding for students who complete the school specialist degree. Prospects for students in the clinical child track are also very good. After the completion of their Master’s degree, clinical child track students find employment in a variety of clinical and community agencies under the supervision of a licensed professional. Students in the clinical child track are also highly successful at getting accepted into doctoral programs if they choose to apply.

Please visit the application information page for admission requirements and procedures.

Divorce Court Lawyers Reno NV, Family Law Attorneys Nevada, Child Custody Visitation

    #

Meet the Reno, NV Family Law A+ Team

At the Law Office of Marilyn D. York, our special areas of expertise are getting the best possible divorce settlement for our clients and protecting them before, during and after the divorce. In that, we are the assiduous (hence A+ ) team. Legal teams that claim they will aggresively represent you or will fight for you sound one dimensional. We are assiduous: hard-working, attentive, diligent, tenacious, industrious, scrupulous, studious, unflagging, untiring, zealous and yes we will also aggressively fight for you where your case needs it but we are so much more than that.

We protect all of our clients’ rights on issues likely to arise in a divorce case, including:
    Equal custody More visitation
    Paternity testing Asset protection
    Preventing move-aways Opposing restraining orders
Terminating parental rights Fair child/spousal support
All other issues of family law

Our practice is focused on securing men s rights. Even though most Nevada laws, as written, do not discriminate against men, courts often seem to favor women in their decisions. This bias is common in family courts around the globe, and is rooted in human history. It usually takes great effort by a legal counsel to secure fair rights for fathers to be able to maintain a constant and vital presence in their children s lives.

We at the Law Office of Marilyn D. York know how truly important it is for children to grow up with both parents raising them, even if the family has been fractured by a parental split. That s why we fight so hard for our clients. The greatest beneficiaries of a just court settlement are not only the fathers we represent, but their children.

Protecting the children is my main concern and cases where I can
improve a child s life are always my highest priority.

    Identity Theft Protection

When the average American thinks about personal security, identity theft protection may not be the first concern that comes to mind. While most people have at least heard of identity theft and identity fraud, many of them are unaware of how widespread and complex the problems actually are.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has called identity theft one of the fastest-growing crimes in America. 1

ID theft: Making a plan to protect yourself

There are many ways these crimes can occur, which makes them especially difficult to protect against. # Criminals do not have to break into your home to commit identity fraud and access your money; there are many other ways that criminals can steal your information and misuse it for their own gain.

For instance, your identity can potentially be compromised even when you are engaged in perfectly legitimate everyday transactions, such as paying your medical bills, ordering a gift online or swiping your debit card at a restaurant. So how is the average consumer supposed to guard against this threat?

    Marriage & divorce

Marriage and divorce are both common experiences. In Western cultures, more than 90 percent of people marry by age 50. Healthy marriages are good for couples’ mental and physical health. They are also good for children; growing up in a happy home protects children from mental, physical, educational and social problems. However, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce. The divorce rate for subsequent marriages is even higher.

Adapted from the Encyclopedia of Psychology

    Research on Marriage & Divorce

Separation and divorce are emotionally difficult events, but it is possible to have a healthy breakup.

Keep your romantic partnership in good working order by talking openly, keeping it interesting and seeking help if needed.

Research on what makes a marriage work shows that people in a good marriage have completed these psychological “tasks.”

Parents of a “blended family” face plenty of challenges, but there are things you can do to make communication easier and help children adjust to their new reality.

Scientists have found that the psychological and social aspects of committed relationships between same-sex partners largely resemble those of heterosexual partnerships, that living in a state where same-sex marriage is outlawed can lead to chronic social stress and mental health problems, and that same-sex couples are as fit and capable parents as heterosexual couples.

    Getting Help

In the United States, couples marrying for the first time have approximately a fifty percent chance of divorcing. Psychologists are helping couples’ “I do” last a lifetime through development and application of scientifically tested relationship education programs.
