Pikes Peak Hospice Palliative Care

This isn t the easiest place to write a review of because I just lost my dad there a couple days ago. But for anyone else that might have to go through something that hard, this place is amazing.

It s located on the 4th floor of the Medical Center and has an incredible staff, many of whom are volunteers with personal experiences there. The social worker and chaplain that came to speak with my mom were absolutely incredible and made things so much easier for her. They even help to set up things for after someone passes, which I know I appreciated because I had no idea what to do.

My sister and I spent a lot of time walking around the floor and there are beautiful pieces of art everywhere along with two sitting areas, each with a piano and small aviary (with finches and doves in it). It was just before Christmas so they also had trees and decorations up.

There is a cafeteria on the 5th floor (check the hours because it s not open all the time) that gives a discount to family members of someone in the hospice. And they have a pretty good selection of food too.

I had to telecommute while I was there, and the hospice offers a wifi just for family members to use. You just have to ask the front desk for the password.

These are a great bunch of people that made the hardest day of my life much easier to deal with. In the end when you re loved one passes, they even place a rose on the door. It s a small thing, but means a lot at the time.

Situations like this always leave me wishing there was a ZERO star rating. I had a terrible experience with Pikes Peak Hospice. There are some great nurses there, Tangee is really, really compassionate and knowledgeable. Several other day shift folks are great. BUT, if you stay the night with your loved one you will see a night shift that could care less if you end up being the one to care for your loved one. They certainly won t move at anything more than a snails pace to respond to a call light. They were deplorable.

However, it s the saleswoman Mimi that was really despicable. She put on a high pressure sales pitch that used car salesmen would be in awe of. She mentioned on numerous occasions that right now we have a bed open , making it sound like at any moment they might fill up and a bed would not be available any longer. She also refused to let us call and talk to the charge nurse and ask some detailed questions to someone who actually knew what kind of care was provided. Once we got in, there were probably 12 beds available, so it was abundantly clear that she was preying on us in order to close a deal. Here we are, with our father in the hospital on his way to dying and all Mimi cares about is selling us a bed. Enjoy that commission Mimi, I hope it buys you a lot of fans as you rot in hell.

How to Form a Professional LLC in Colorado

As a licensed professional in Colorado you can structure your business as a Colorado professional limited liability company (PLLC). This will give you protection from several important types of liability. It also may provide certain tax advantages compared to other ways of structuring your business.

What is a Colorado PLLC?

A Colorado PLLC is a limited liability company (LLC) formed specifically by people who will provide Colorado licensed professional services. LLCs in general are businesses registered with the state that consist of one or more people called LLC members who own the business. Like other LLCs, PLLCs protect their individual members from people with claims for many (but not all) types of financial debts or personal injuries.

Note: Unlike the majority of other states, Colorado s LLC Act doesn t include provisions specifically for LLCs that will provide professional services, nor is there a separate PLLC Act. Also unlike almost every other state, Colorado s corporation laws do not specifically include provisions for professional corporations (PCs). (A few other states largely base their rules for PLLCs on pre-existing PC laws.) Instead, the legal basis for PLLCs in Colorado as well as for other forms of so-called professional service entities derives from the state s various laws regulating professions and occupations (Title 12 of the Colorado Statutes).

What is a Professional Service?

Under Colorado s laws for professions and occupations, the following professionals would be considered to provide professional services:

  • certified public accountants
  • architects
  • chiropractors
  • dentists
  • engineers
  • land surveyors
  • lawyers
  • optometrists
  • physical therapists
  • physicians and surgeons
  • podiatrists
  • professional counselors, and
  • veterinarians.

Anyone who is licensed to practice one of these professions in Colorado can form a Colorado PLLC. If you are licensed to practice another profession and want to form a PLLC, check with a local business attorney to see if the laws for that profession permit practitioners to form PLLCs.

How Do I Form a Colorado PLLC?

To form your Colorado PLLC you ll need to:

  • have the state licenses for professionals who will be a member of the company (licenses may be required for either some or all members depending on the profession)
  • check with the state licensing board for your profession to see if its prior approval is required, (and, if so, obtain the necessary documentation showing that approval), and
  • file articles of organization with the Colorado Secretary of State (SOS).

You may also need to register your PLLC with the appropriate professional regulating agency after formation.

The articles of organization must be filed electronically. You can, however, view and download a sample articles of organization form by going to the SOS website. Be aware that the statute governing your particular profession, or the regulating authority for your profession, may require that you include additional language in your articles of organization. For more information, check with the regulating agency or a local business attorney. The current filing fee is $50.

Naming Restrictions

In general, all Colorado LLCs, including PLLCs, must contain the term or abbreviation limited liability company , ltd. liability company , limited liability co. , ltd. liability co. , limited , l.l.c. , llc , or ltd. . The laws for your particular profession may impose additional restrictions on names. For additional important information on LLC names generally, check the Business Name, Location Licenses section of the Nolo website.

Service and Membership Restrictions

Service and membership restrictions on Colorado PLLCs can differ among the various professions. For example, if a PLLC provides CPA services, a majority of its members must be licensed certified public accountants in good standing in Colorado or another state. Moreover, the Colorado statute governing certified public accountants seems to state that PLLCs providing CPA services are not permitted to provide other kinds of services (with some exceptions). Check the statute for your particular profession or consult with a local business attorney for more details. Also, keep in mind that Colorado PLLCs and/or their members are subject to the regulation of the relevant state professional licensing authorities.

Operating Agreement

You should make sure you have an operating agreement for your PLLC. Unlike professional licenses, articles of organization, naming restrictions, and service restrictions, this is not a state requirement. However, it is important to have an operating agreement so that other members of the PLLC (if any), as well as outside companies and businesses (for example banks), know what the internal rules are for the company. Depending on your own level of knowledge and expertise, you should consider having a lawyer assist you in preparing this document.

A PLLC Will Not Protect You From All Liability

Forming your professional service business as a PLLC will protect you personally from:

  • creditors seeking to collect unpaid debts owed solely by the PLLC
  • liability for the malpractice of other PLLC members, and
  • people who are personally injured in connection with your PLLC because of things having nothing to do with your own professional malpractice or torts (for example, if someone slips and falls in your PLLC s offices).

Regarding protection from liability for the malpractice of fellow PLLC members, be aware that, for some professions in some states, PLLC members are required to have a minimum amount of malpractice insurance before they are eligible for such protection. Therefore, it s always a good idea to double check your state s PLLC laws, as well as your state s rules for your particular profession, regarding minimum insurance requirements.

Meanwhile, you are personally responsible if:

  • you personally guarantee repayment of a business loan
  • you engage in professional malpractice (such as completely botching a patient s treatment or egregiously mishandling a client s case), or
  • you intentionally or negligently commit a tort (such as assaulting someone).

Because you are not protected from your own malpractice, you should make sure you have professional liability insurance and, if applicable, that your coverage meets any minimum insurance requirements.

A PLLC is Different From a Professional Corporation

A PLLC is not the same thing as a professional corporation (PC). A PLLC is a newer type of business entity than a PC. Here are some of the key differences:

  • a PLLC, like other LLCs, is comprised of members, but a PC, like other corporations, is comprised of shareholders
  • following from the previous point, PLLC ownership consists of so-called membership interests in the business, but PC ownership is based on shares of stock; and
  • a PLLC, like other LLCs, is a so-called pass-through tax entity, meaning that in most states (including Colorado) only the individual members have income tax obligations, while a PC, like other corporations, usually has its own income tax obligations.

The tax differences between PLLCs and PCs can become complicated. For example, a PC can elect a special tax status (S corporation status ) that effectively makes it a pass-through tax entity like a PLLC. And, meanwhile, PCs that don t elect special status may be subject to double taxation in other words, both the PC itself and its shareholders may have to pay taxes on business income.

Colorado allows professionals to form both PLLCs and PCs, and both PLLCs and PCs provide liability protection for, respectively, their members or shareholders. Because the protection is essentially the same for both PLLCs and PCs, but PLLCs are simpler to create and operate, many professionals prefer the PLLC structure.

Colorado Bureau Of Investigation Admits Dozens Of Faulty DUI Blood Tests –

Colorado Bureau Of Investigation Admits Dozens Of Faulty DUI Blood Tests

DENVER (CBS4) Responding to a CBS4 investigation, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged at least 56 of the DUI blood tests it conducted in the last six months were incorrect.

“The initial results in each of those 56 cases showed lower alcohol levels for the drivers than when additional quality assurance retesting occurred, said Susan Medina, a spokesperson for the CBI. “There is no indication that any defendant was inappropriately charged with an offense based on test results showing an erroneously high level of alcohol in a driver’s bloodstream.”

The CBI opened labs in July 2015 in Pueblo and Grand Junction and since then has done about 1,500 DUI blood tests for the Colorado State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies. Medina said the faulty tests amounted to about 4 percent of the DUI testing the labs have conducted since last July.

The CBI said it learned of its erroneous lab results “in recent months“ when an independent lab checked two blood samples that had also been tested by the CBI and the independent lab ChemaTox discovered what the CBI calls “anomalies.

ChemaTox told CBS4 it notified state authorities of the problems in December 2015. The CBI said it then checked some of its other DUI alcohol results and confirmed its lab testing problems.

“While a thorough review remains in progress, said CBI, “it is believed the cause of the anomalies has been identified and corrected.

Medina declined to say if the problem was human error, testing equipment, or some other factor.

Sarah Urfer of ChemaTox labs told CBS4, “I contacted CBI and said, Look, we had an anomaly and it s 24 percent different.’

Urfer said the anomalies are important “because those are people’s lives at stake.

David Miller, a Denver-based defense attorney who defends DUI clients, told CBS4 the CBI needs to come clean.

“It creates a problem with the integrity of the system. They’re not saying what the problem is so we don’t know what the problem is, so we’re going to have to get full disclosure to start with. I think it s up to prosecutors now to look at each case and see if the convictions are proper in the first place and notify the client or lawyer as to what s happening, said Miller.

David Miller (credit: CBS)

He said the CBS4 investigation revealing the faulty testing shows a “huge problem. It’s a big deal if you’re the person affected by it. It’s a big deal individually and if you look at the big picture, if you are the person affected by this it’s a very big deal.

Miller said to re-establish credibility, the CBI needs to have all 1,500 blood samples it has examined since last July re-tested.

In many cases, blood drawn from a suspect is a critical piece of evidence establishing either guilt or innocence in DUI cases. There are an estimated 30,000 DUI cases in Colorado each year, according to the CBI.

Dr. Pat Sulik, a chemist with Rocky Mountain Instrumental Laboratories, checked 16 blood samples from the CBI in recent months. She said of those 16 samples, seven were problematic having at least a 5 percent variance from the readings she found. Of those seven, she said five had more than a 10 percent discrepancy.

Dr. Pat Sulik (credit: CBS)

Sulik said she would normally expect to have her results and the CBI results be nearly identical 99 percent of the time.

“To see this many discrepancies when the CBI just started this summer, this is, at a simple overview, way too many discrepancies, said Sulik. “When we saw our first large discrepancy we retested the sample and gave ourselves a heart attack.”

Sulik said the CBI’s erroneous, lower testing numbers mean “they are not being taken off the road, the DUI law is not being enforced if the state lab is coming up with lower numbers.

Sulik said in at least one case she checked, the suspect in a DUI case would have faced a more serious charge had the CBI lab testing been correct the first time around.

Ironically, the CBI only began doing this kind of testing after similar testing by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment came under fire in 2013 and CDPHE testing of DUI blood samples was shut down. In that case, defense attorneys maintained that the Department of Health testing was biased in favor of prosecutors and that staff was inadequately trained in handling blood samples.

In 2014 the state Legislature approved a bill providing nearly $2 million in annual funding and the hiring of five new full-time employees for the CBI to take over the DUI blood testing that was previously conducted by the Department of Health. Now the Department of Health is assisting in the investigation of the faulty CBI testing.

According to Medina’s statement to CBS4, ”After the review the CBI will issue amended reports to the law enforcement agencies that submitted the blood samples, and work with stakeholders to ensure accurate scientific results and prosecutions statewide.

Mike Rankin, the CBI Director, said, ”While the CBI works extremely hard to avoid any testing errors in our laboratories, the quality assurance procedures served their designed purpose of safeguarding the integrity of the program.

The CBI declined to answer any other questions from CBS4 citing an ongoing review of what happened. Medina said the agency might be able to provide more information once the review is completed.

Miller told CBS4 he intended to reopen any DUI cases he has handled in the last seven months that involved CBI blood testing. Urfer called the problem “very frustrating. I’ve been through this twice before. It seems like this should be a preventable problem. There are a number of labs that have not had these problems.

Colorado DUI Frequenly Asked Questions #criminal #lawyer #colorado #springs

Colorado DUI Frequently Asked Questions

Q: The police officer didn’t read me my Miranda rights. Will I win my case?

Generally speaking, no. But you could win your case because of this. When the officer first pulls you over, he can ask you questions without giving you your rights. But once you are handcuffed he must read you your rights if he is going to ask you any more questions. But keep in mind, Miranda rights only apply to your statements. They do not prevent the officer from testifying against you about his observations. If you made incriminating statements after you are formally arrested, your defense attorney may be able to have those statements suppressed.

Q: Do I have the right to challenge my license suspension?

Yes. You may request a hearing on your license suspension by taking your notice of revocation to the DMV. If you request a hearing, you’ll be given a temporary permit that will allow you to drive until the date of the hearing.

Q: Is it mandatory that I do the roadside tests?

No. These field sobriety tests are voluntary. The officer may not tell you this. He or she may instruct you to get out of the car and tell you to start doing the tests. You have a right to decline them, however, and should. You do not have to offer an explanation, and should not make any statements other than that you are politely declining to take the tests.

Q: Do I have to answer the officer’s questions?

No! – and this is very important. You do have to identify who you are, but that’s about all. Otherwise, you have a right to remain silent. And believe me, anything you say will be used against you if it helps the case of the Colorado District Attorney. You should politely decline to respond to any of the police officers questions.

You have a right to refuse the test. However, if your case were to go to trial, the District Attorney would be able to talk about how you refused the test. This is never good evidence. Juries will tend to assume that because you refused the test that you had something to hide. And keep in mind, if you refuse the test your driver’s license will be suspended for 12 months, instead of 90 days on a first offense.

The hand-held breath test that the officer gives you on the roadside can’t be used against you in court. Only the test given on the table-top machine at the station is admissible. Likewise, your license will not be suspended because you refused the hand-held test. This small roadside breathalyzer is called a preliminary breath test or a PBT. The results are not admissible for the District Attorney’s case, or for your defense case.

Q: What happens if I refuse the blood or breath test?

As mentioned above, a refusal is not very good evidence for the jury to hear. They will likely assume that you had something to hide. However, the criminal law does not impose harsher penalties if you refuse. In fact, you have a constitutional right not to incriminate yourself by taking the test. At the DMV. on the other hand, you will likely experience a longer license suspension if you refuse the test. The reason is because Colorado Express Consent law considers you to have automatically consented to a blood or breath test if you are driving. And this gives the DMV the power to take your license away if you don’t take the test. The DMV can take away your license for refusing the chemical test even if you have not committed a crime (a DUI). Having a defense lawyer at the DMV hearing will help improve your chances of keeping your license.

Q: Should I choose the blood test or the breath test?

You should choose the breath test. Breath tests are generally the less reliable of the two tests. Many factors can result in the breath test being inaccurate. Your defense lawyer can also have your breath sample retested in Colorado, and the retest often produces a different result.

Q: What does BAC mean?

BAC stands for blood-alcohol content. It is a measure of the amount of alcohol that you have in your blood. For example, a BAC of .08 is reached if you have .08 g of alcohol in 100 mL (Milliliters) of your blood. For breath tests, it means .08 g of alcohol in 210 liters of breath.

Q: For how long will I lose my license?

If you took a BAC test, your license will be suspended for 90 days in Colorado – if it is your first offense. If you refused the blood or breath test, your license will be suspended for one year. You may request a provisional license, sometimes called a red license , if your license is suspended. Say you are suspended for 90 days, and you request a provisional license. If your request is granted, the three-month suspension will turn into a six-month suspension. However, only the first month of the six months will be no driving at all. This will be followed by five months of limited driving (for things like going to work, etc.) A provisional license is valid in Colorado only, and cannot be used outside of the State.

Q: What should I do to prevent losing my license?

You can request a DMV hearing to challenge your license suspension. You must do this within seven days from the time that you are arrested and receive your notice of revocation, which is a yellow piece of paper. Take this notice to the DMV within seven days and your driving privileges will be extended at least until the date of your hearing. In cases where you took a blood test, you may not receive this notice until you get your blood results in the mail, which can take several weeks.

Q: What should I expect at the DMV hearing?

At the DMV, the hearing officer must decide whether there’s probable cause that you committed a DUI offense. That is, whether there was a valid reason to stop your vehicle, and whether there was probable cause to believe that you were under the influence. The hearing officer may also have to determine whether the blood or breath test evidence is reliable enough to suspend your license, or whether you were fully advised of your rights before submitting to a test.

Q: Is going to court like going to the DMV?

No. In fact, they have nothing to do with each other. In court you are charged with a crime, and face consequences like jail or probation or both. At the DMV the only issue in question is whether you get to keep your license.

Q: How many points can I get on my license before I get suspended?

The answer will depend on your age:

16 to 17 years old:

You will be suspended if you get:

  • six points within 12 months, or
  • seven points since you’ve had your license
  • 18 to 20 years old:

You will be suspended if you get:

  • nine points within 12 months
  • 12 points within 24 months
  • 14 points since you’ve had your license
  • 21 years old and older:

You will be suspended if you get:

  • 12 points within 12 months
  • 18 points within 24 months

The points are counted as of the day of the offense, not when you appear in court or plead guilty.

Q: The prosecutor is offering to drop it to a DWAI and promised no jail. Should I just accept the offer?

There are a number of questions that should be answered by your defense lawyer before you plead guilty, even to the lesser offense of DWAI. This is true in any criminal case, but especially in a DUI case. Many people incorrectly assume that they are caught, that they are guilty, and they just want to get it over with. What is important to remember is that the District Attorney must be able to prove that you are guilty in court. For many of the reasons discussed above, this may be harder for them than you think. You shouldn’t just assume that you have no choice other than pleading guilty. Additionally, if you are on probation or on a deferred sentence at the time of your arrest, you’re guilty plea may result in your probation or deferred sentence being revoked. Your lawyer can try to work the resolution of these other cases into the resolution of your DUI case, and possibly keep you from going to jail.

Q: If I get a DUI in Colorado, is jail mandatory?

Sometimes. To see if your case involves a mandatory jail sentence, please visit our page regarding Colorado DUI penalties.

Expunging or Sealing Adult Criminal Records in Colorado

In Colorado, it is not usually possible to expunge or “seal” a conviction from your criminal record, even if you have completed probation. There are, however, exceptions for some offenses involving controlled substances. (Colorado Statutes 24-72-308.5 and -308.6)

If you were arrested but released without being charged with a crime, or were arrested and charged with a crime but not convicted, you can probably have your records sealed. After sealing, it is as though the arrest or charge never occurred, and you don t have to disclose the information if you are asked about it. (Colorado Statutes 24-72-308.)

Here is a summary of Colorado s laws governing expungement of adult criminal records.

Expungement of Criminal Records if You Were Not Convicted

You may petition to have your criminal record sealed if:

  • you were arrested but not charged with a crime
  • the case against you was dismissed, or
  • you were found not guilty of the charges brought against you.

There are some exceptions to this rule. If you were not charged because of a plea agreement in another case, or if your case was dismissed because of a plea agreement in another case, your record cannot be sealed. In addition, your record won’t be sealed if you have failed to meet all the conditions of your sentence.

In addition, sealing is not possible for records concerning:

  • Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor traffic offenses
  • Class A or B traffic infractions
  • convictions for driving under the influence
  • convictions for offenses based on unlawful sexual behavior, or
  • convictions involving the holder of a commercial driver s license or the operator of a commercial motor vehicle.

(Colorado Revised Statutes 24-72-308.)

Expungement of Offenses Involving Controlled Substances (on or after July 1, 2008 and before July 1, 2011)

If you were convicted of an offense involving a controlled substance and you have satisfied all the conditions of your sentence, you may petition to have your records sealed if:

  • it has been at least ten years since the end of all criminal proceedings against you or your release from supervision concerning a criminal conviction, and
  • you have not been charged with or convicted of a crime during that ten year period.

There are some limitations on the types of controlled substance offenses that may be sealed under this law. Carefully read Colorado Statutes 24-72-308.5 or consult a criminal law attorney.

Expungement of Offenses Involving Controlled Substances (on or after July 1, 2011)

If you were convicted of an offense involving a controlled substance and you have satisfied all the conditions of your sentence, you may petition to have your records sealed if the offense is:

  • a petty offense or a Class 2 or 3 misdemeanor ; and it has been three years since the end of all criminal proceedings against you or your release from supervision concerning a criminal conviction
  • a Class 1 misdemeanor; and it has been five years since the end of all criminal proceedings against you or your release from supervision concerning a criminal conviction
  • a Class 5 or 6 felony drug possession offense; and it has been seven years since the end of all criminal proceedings against you or your release from supervision concerning a criminal conviction, or
  • another offense, and it has been ten years since the end of all criminal proceedings against you or your release from supervision concerning a criminal conviction.

There are some limitations on the types of controlled substance offenses that may be sealed under this law. Carefully read Colorado Statutes 24-72-308.6 or consult a criminal law attorney.

Expungement of DNA Evidence or Other Biological Substance Records

If a law enforcement agency collected a biological sample from you while investigating a crime, you can petition to have that evidence expunged in some circumstances. Consider a petition for expungement if:

  • the charges against you were dismissed
  • you were acquitted of the crime, or
  • the charges resulted in a conviction other than a felony.

This law does not apply if you were arrested, charged with, or convicted of a separate offense for which collection of a biological sample was permitted. (Colorado Revised Statutes 16-23-105.)

For More Information

You can find the official Petition to Seal Arrest Criminal Records at the Colorado Courts website. But be aware that cleaning up your criminal record can be complicated. To learn more about expunging criminal records in Colorado — and to discuss your personal circumstances — you should contact a qualified criminal law attorney. A good lawyer can guide you each step of the way.

Car Crash Phone Scam Circulating Colorado Springs

A telephone scam is circulating our area. It’s dramatic and personal. It is about family, and any of us could easily be a target.

11 News is talking to a man who almost fell victim.

Deon got an alarming phone call from a number he didn’t recognize. The caller said there was a bad accident involving a truck, an SUV and a car that happened in downtown Colorado Springs.

“As soon as he said downtown, my heart jumped and I was very upset,” Deon said.

Deon’s wife drives a 4-door car and was supposed to be headed downtown to a hair appointment. But then there was an interesting twist. The caller’s brother was also in the crash. The caller said his brother is a fugitive and was holding Deon’s wife hostage.

“He stated if I got some money to his brother, he could get out of town and he could get my wife.”

When Deon pressed the caller for answers, it just didn’t add up.

“He couldn’t tell me the color of the vehicles, he couldn’t tell me the name of my wife or anything like that.”

Deon hung up and called police. He’s hoping others will learn from this and not fall victim.

This scam has been circulating in the Pikes Peak region for the past few weeks. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about this same scam earlier in February .

Colorado Springs police say they have briefed all their officers on this scam. The criminals might know a few simple facts about you, such as your marital status, or what part of town you live in. That’s stuff that is easy to find out, and it could draw you in to the story.

If you receive a call like this, call police. Officers can actually verify traffic crashes, even if they are in a different city.

Colorado Disability Benefits: Social Security Disability Insurance and SSI

If you are a resident of Colorado seeking to apply for SSI or SSDI, you can contact the Social Security office nearest you or you can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. You can also begin an application for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) online .

    Disability Evaluation in Colorado

Once Social Security determines that a Colorado disability claimant meets the basic eligibility criteria for either SSDI or SSI (Supplemental Security Income), the agency sends the claimant s file to Colorado s Disability Determination Service (DDS). DDS is a state agency run by Colorado s Department of Human Services. DDS has one office, located at 3190 S. Vaughn Way, Aurora, CO 80014-9833. Its telephone number is (303) 368-4100.

After a disability application is denied in Colorado, you don’t need to make a request for reconsideration with DDS. Instead, claimants have 60 days to appeal the denial, and their appeals are scheduled for hearings with an administrative law judge.

Social Security’s Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) handles disability hearings for SSI and SSDI claimants. Colorado has two ODAR offices. Individuals who live near Alamosa, Canon City, Durango, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, La Junta, Montrose, Pueblo, and Trinidad use the ODAR office located in Colorado Springs:

Additional Assistance for SSI Recipients in Colorado

Most SSI recipients who live independently in Colorado are eligible for a supplemental payment of $25 per month. Colorado administers this supplement through the Colorado Department of Human Services. The supplemental payment means that a typical SSI recipient in Colorado can receive a total of $735/month (the $25 state supplement plus the $710 basic federal benefit).

Colorado pays an increased state supplement to SSI recipients who live in adult foster homes or who receive special services to allow them to remain in their own homes. For example, those living in adult foster homes are eligible for an extra $551 per month, and those who receive home care services can receive a state supplement of $475 per month. Low-income disabled children are also eligible for the home care supplement if they would be institutionalized without the services.

In addition to state supplemental payments, SSI recipients in Colorado are automatically eligible for Medicaid. The Social Security Administration makes Medicaid eligibility determinations when it issues disability award letters, and then Colorado contacts the newly approved recipients directly.

    Disability Resources in Colorado

Colorado provides assistance for those applying for Social Security benefits through the state’s Social Security field offices. About Hospice Care

Note. Many families or their loved ones’ doctors often wait too long to order hospice. Hospice is a very valuable service and should be ordered at an earlier stage of illness. Many doctors or family don’t often consider hospice for Alzheimer’s, degenerative old age or other debilitating illnesses where a person is going downhill fast. They should.

It is unfortunate that many people who died in a hospital emergency room or who received heroic treatments to prolong life in a hospital may have had the alternative of dying at home in familiar surroundings, with family or other loved ones at their side.

When someone is in crisis or appears to be going downhill fast but there really is no hope for recovery, family often call 911 and start a process which can result in great stress and great emotional discomfort. The loved one who is dying ends up in a hospital and may die there or be transferred to a nursing home where death eventually occurs.

When there is no longer hope for prolonging life, especially when this decision is made months in advance, hospice is usually a better alternative to other medical intervention.

Hospice is a form of palliative care for patients who are terminally ill. A commonly used definition for terminally ill patients is, patients who have a progressive, incurable illness that will end in death despite good treatment, and who are sick enough that you would not be surprised if they died within six months.

Hospice care is a valuable service and is generally underused except for terminal cancer patients. Hospice allows for compassion and dignity in the process of dying. Most families wait too long to have their doctor prescribe hospice from Medicare. It should be considered at an earlier stage.

Hospice involves a team approach using the following providers.

    • Family caregivers;
    • The patient’ s personal physician;
    • Hospice physician (or medical director);
    • Nurses;
    • Home health aides;
    • Social workers;
    • Clergy or other counselors;
    • Trained volunteers; and
    • Speech, physical, and occupational therapists, if needed.

The purpose of hospice is the following:

    • Manages the patient’s pain and symptoms;
    • Assists the patient with the emotional and psychosocial and spiritual aspects of dying;
    • Provides needed medications, medical supplies, and equipment;
    • Coaches the family on how to care for the patient;
    • Delivers special services like speech and physical therapy when needed;
    • Makes short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite time; and
    • Provides bereavement care and counseling to surviving family and friends.

A person can receive hospice from Medicare if he or she is

    • eligible for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance), and
    • the doctor and the hospice medical director certify that the person is terminally ill and probably has less than six months to live, and
    • the person or a family member signs a statement choosing hospice care instead of routine Medicare covered benefits for the terminal illness, and
    • care is received from a Medicare-approved hospice program.

A person may continue to receive regular Medicare benefits from his or her customary doctors for conditions not related to the hospice condition.

    Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy, surgery and chemotherapy are the 3 most common modalities used in the treatment of cancer. Radiation therapy and surgery are the only modalities that can locally control solid tumors such as carcinomas and sarcomas. Radiation therapy can also be used to provide relief of pain, or improve function in patients suffering from advanced cancers. Radiation therapy has been used for over 100 years, but technical advancements in the last decade have vastly improved the ability to deliver dose specifically to the tumor while sparing normal tissue structures. Learn about the Varian Trilogy Radiation Therapy Machine .

    What is radiation therapy?

Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to damage the DNA in tumor cells, resulting in tumor cell death. The most common type of radiation therapy is external beam radiation therapy, also known as teletherapy. Teletherapy is delivered by a radiation producing machine like a linear accelerator, or from a machine housing a radioactive source, such as a cobalt machine. The patient is precisely positioned on a table, also called a couch, near the machine. Radiation travels from the machines to the patient, where the radiation dose is delivered to the tumor and surrounding normal tissues. While the patient remains in the exact same position, the machine actually revolves around the patient so that radiation is delivered from many different angles. Each treatment takes just a few minutes and does not cause any discomfort.

    How does radiation therapy work?
Radiation therapy kills cells by damaging the DNA. The damage is from the localized release of ionizing radiation, which can damage the DNA directly, or more commonly, through the formation of oxygen free radicals. The cells generally do not die until the cell goes to divide. This is known as mitotic cell death. One of the reasons it is effective against cancer cells is that cancer cells are routinely dividing. Radiation can also cause a more immediate death in some cancers cells, called apoptotic cell death. This is seen frequently in tumors such as lymphoma.

What are the goals of radiation therapy?
Radiation is usually administered with the goal of achieving long term tumor control. This is referred to as radiation therapy with curative intent . Depending on the part of the body bearing the tumor, most veterinary patients treated with curative intent protocols are treated over a 3-4 week period. A small fraction of radiation is delivered each day. Sometimes, depending on the location, there can be side effects, known as acute effects from this type of treatment. New technology is helping us minimize acute effects.

    What is palliative radiation therapy?
Sometimes radiation is administered to relieve the patient of pain and/or improve regional function and hygiene. This is referred to as palliative radiation therapy . Palliative protocols are most commonly used when the patient has advanced cancer with tumor spread to other locations, or some other critical condition that would limit life expectancy. These protocols vary and may involve weekly treatments or treatments given over the course of a few days. Palliative radiation therapy usually relieves pain and may even cause the tumors to shrink a bit and rarely cause acute effects. Unfortunately the duration of patient response is far shorter than patients treated with more aggressive (curative) protocols.

Which patients get acute effects and why?
Patients treated with curative intent radiation therapy may develop side effects, called acute effects during or shortly after treatment. New radiation technological advances, such as the Varian Trilogy linear accelerator at CSU, are able to decrease the severity of, or even eliminate acute effects for tumors in some parts of the body. Nasal tumors, bladder and prostate cancers, oral tumors and brain tumors now have minimal acute effects. Unfortunately, when tumors are located close to the skin surface, it is necessary for the skin to receive radiation doses that may cause discomfort. Your clinician will discuss potential side effects with you prior to treatment.

What is SRT and how is it different from curative intent or palliative
    radiation therapy?

Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT) is also called stereotactic radiosurgery, gamma knife therapy and cyberknife therapy. There is no surgery involved, rather it got the name because the radiation is a precise as a scalpel at focusing on the tumor. SRT protocols are generally delivered in 1-5 fractions (doses) on consecutive or alternating days. SRT requires special radiation therapy equipment including the ability to confirm the location of the patient and tumor right before therapy that is the stereotactic aspect that the Trilogy provides. For some tumors, SRT can be used with curative intent. For other tumors it is used for palliation, but for far more durable palliation than what can be achieved using traditional methods. SRT is easy on the patient and client because treatment can be completed in such a short period of time and acute radiation effects are minimal. However, it is not indicated for all tumor types/location. Ask an ACC oncologist if this is an option for your pet.

What are the most common tumors treated with radiation therapy?
The most common tumors treated in dogs and cats are brain tumors, pituitary tumors, tumors of the body and extremities (soft tissue sarcomas, mast cell tumors, vaccine associated sarcomas), lymphoma, nasal tumors, oral tumors, bladder tumors, prostate tumors, perianal tumors, and bone tumors.

Hidden gem for the savvy traveller.

This extraordinary property is not for those that are fans of Embassy Suites or Crowne Plaza type properties. It’s for those that want more. A true Colorado experience that includes being nestled in the woods, next to a beautiful creek and the best hospitality I’ve ever encountered. Mary runs the property and is the epitome of graciousness and thoughtfulness without being intrusive. She is quite lovely and genuinely cares about the comfort of her guests. My background is the hotel business and I’ve worked for many from Homewood Suites to Super 8’s and independent Mom and Pop properties. It’s very conveniently located next to a Safeway and a Starbucks, equidistant to Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs proper, close to Garden of the Gods and Bear Creek regional park. it simply doesn’t get any better in this area. Thank you Mary for such an enjoyable stay.

My husband I just returned from Colorado Springs, Colorado. We have family that live there, so we visit quite often. This time our trip was great! I found a wonderful place to stay in the city. The room was large well kept, something I rarely see when I travel. It really felt like home! The grounds were clean well cared for. What impressed me the most, was the staff. When I chose to go to the office, the young man behind the counter stopped what he was doing to assist me. The maid was there upon our arrival to see if we needed extra towels. Iv’e never had that kind of service. You can be sure the next time I go home to see my family, we will stay at ‘TRAVELSTAR

Great Hotel, Great Location. Very clean and comfortable, the bed was perfect! Fair rates compared to others in the area. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast included a larger than average choice of food and everything was fresh and tasty. The hotel is located within easy access to many stores and attractions. The rooms were large and spacious. This hotel is near to Colorado Springs Convention Center. The location was great. I highly recommend Howard Johnson Express Inn – Colorado Springs.

The Stanley Hotel, known for its architecture, magnificent setting, and famous visitors, may possibly be best known today for its inspirational role in the Stephen King’s novel, “The Shining.” This Colorado hotel has been featured as one of America’s most haunted hotels and with the numerous stories from visitors and staff, The Stanley Hotel continues to “shine” today, as it did in 1909 when first opened.

Forced by poor health to move West, F.O. Stanley and his famous Steamer arrived in Estes Park in 1903. Finding the town lacking in amenities, F.O. set out to change the local economy. On the 160 acres he purchased from Lord Dunraven, Stanley first built the main building of the hotel, one of 11 buildings in the original complex. Many of those original buildings remain in use today on the remaining 55 acres. Estes Park is the gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park full of lush forests,

thriving wildlife, and over 300 miles of hiking trails. From horseback riding to mountain biking, there is no shortage of outdoor activities to keep everyone in the family entertained. Enjoy the majestic scenery of the Rockies and the unique Colorado lodging The Stanley offers. There is no hotel in Estes Park more appealing and mysterious.
