    Fairmont Empress Hotel – The Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Colombia is a monument to the glorious past of the British Empire. It is an imposing structure at the base of the inner Harbor in the capital city of the province. Surrounded by a host of other impressive buildings, the Empress holds court daily to guests and visitors alike gently weaving you back and forth through time and space.

    The original hotel has been added to over the years creating a mix of the old and the new. The hotel itself is undergoing a renovation that is currently half way finished. The architect is trying to preserve the rich old heritage while updating to today’s contemporary times and amenities. The older section currently does NOT have air conditioning but does have a ceiling fan. I was there over the July 4th weekend in one of the older rooms on the 6th floor and we didn’t need A/C. The renovations are expected to be completed by the summer of 2017.

    Thanks to my status as a Premier Level rewards guest (remember to sign up for the free President’s Club Card before you make your reservations) I was able to upgrade to a mini-suite that contained 2 queens sized beds, Flat screen TV sitting on combination chest of drawers with mini Refrigerator and coffee maker and three drawers for clothing, 2 comfy chairs and a reading table, full sized coat closet with safe and bath in one room and a sitting room with a pullout couch and coffee table coat closet and another bath in the second parlor area. Even though the suite did not look out onto the inner harbor, the room had excellent city views and was a sheer delight.

    The visit was for a church convention so there were hundreds of us in the hotel and its conference center. Thanks to the great customer service of people like “Morgan”, at the front desk, check-in and checkout went very smoothly and the staff was genuinely pleasant and helpful at all times. All of the staff from the excelled in ensuring that guests were taken care of and satisfied. They all were knowledgeable about the surrounding area and offered great advice about eating and seeing adventures.

    The hotel has great eateries and one of the highlights of our stay was Afternoon Tea. Although a bit pricey for many with families, the service, ambiance, and delicious foods that accompanied the Tea was well worth the price and the views of the inner harbor along with the patterned tableware and china were classically British. There were a multitude of shops’ and sightseeing adventures with the hotel itself. The swimming pool and spa are delightful although the spa was too warm for my sensitive skin. There is also a kiddy pool.

    Traversing the hotel is an exciting activity because sections were added on at different times so innovative methods were used such as inclines and passage-ways to span to the different levels, which makes even getting to a public restroom an exploration. But that is part of the charm of this hotel and is something not to be missed. The gardens outside are beautiful also remember to check out the Orcas out at the corner of the hotel on Government Street.

    There are many other hotels in the inner harbor area that each have their own charm, but none have the allure, the character and the historic appeal of the Fairmont Empresses in Victoria.

    We were here one night to explore Victoria. From the Empress, one can walk or take a water taxi to everything one wants to see. Great view from our room on the right floor overlooking the bay. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was well equipped and clean throughout. The king bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had everything one needs including bath robes and slippers. The only downside to staying on the 7th or 8th floor is it takes 2 elevators plus one to the garage. We were planning on afternoon high tea but at $75 per person we decided on a nice dinner instead. One cannot go wrong staying at a Fairmont hotel.

    I frequently visit here as my daughter is a very busy birthing doula. staying here allows me to do be fine on my own when she is busy. I can walk everywhere or take a short water taxi or bike. Its a great location and I feel very safe here. its also quiet for sleeping.

    An excellent boutique facility in an interesting location. Granville Island is a unique opportunity to be close to various activities and sites. Wether you want to walk around the Island and visit the various art facilities, restaurants or the fantastic market or take a bicycle for a ride, this is the place to be.

    We stayed here for 3 nights last month. This was our first visit to Vancouver and the hotel did not disappoint! Granville Island was mobbed during the day and our friends with rental cars had a lot of trouble getting into the city and to the hotel but once there, it is a little oasis. At night, the traffic clears. More

    The location was perfect, we did not need a car. Lots of things to do and see right on the Island for our son (8 yr old) and for us. Beautiful walks to nearby restaurants, theatre etc. We enjoyed our stay very much. It s a bit pricey but for us it was worth it, this time.

    End-of-Life Care and Palliative Services in Long-Term Residential Care

    Supportive and compassionate care can be provided to people who are nearing the end of their lives who are receiving long-term residential care services.

    When first admitted to a residential care facility, a person s immediate needs are assessed and a transitional care plan is made. Usually within six weeks of admission, the care is reviewed with the person s family as the person settles in the new environment.

    End-of-life and palliative care services available to clients receiving long-term residential care services include:

    • Pain and symptom assessment and management
    • Psychological care
    • Loss and grief support for family caregivers
    • Access to specialized prescription medication, supplies and equipment.

    B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program

    The B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program supports B.C. residents of any age who have reached the end stage of a life-threatening illness and want to receive medically-appropriate palliative care at home. Home is wherever the person is living, whether in their own home, with family or friends, in an assisted living residence or in a hospice that is not a licensed residential care facility covered under PharmaCare Plan B.

    The intent of the B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program is to allow patients to receive palliative care at home rather than be admitted to hospital. The program gives palliative patients access to the same drug benefits they would receive in hospital, and access to some medical supplies and equipment from their health authority.

    The program includes full coverage of approved medications, equipment and supplies (upon referral to and assessment by the local health authority).

    Types of Publicly Subsidized Care

    Community nursing services are provided by a licensed nursing professional to clients in the community who require acute, chronic, palliative or rehabilitative support. Services include assessment and nursing interventions such as education, wound care, medication management, chronic disease management, care management, post-surgical care and palliative care. Generally, community nursing services will be provided on a short-term basis and community nurses assist clients and their families to be confident in taking over care at home.

    Coming to Scranton for Fall 2017!

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is designed to be completed over a two-year period with day, evening, and Saturday courses as well as on- and off-campus clinical hours. Each program also includes summer session courses and clinical lab hours.

    Acceptance into Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is based on a selective admissions process with a maximum of 15 students selected annually.

    Degree information

    Through a balance of classroom instruction and clinical experience, the student will acquire applied skills and knowledge in the field of Surgical Technology.

    Surgical technologists work in the operating room under the direct supervision of a surgeon and a registered nurse. Surgical technologists help facilitate the draping, and prepping of the surgical patient. They gown, and glove other team members. They get all the instruments, supplies, equipment necessary for specific surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile team, surgical technologists will hand all necessary instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members.

    A surgical technologist has a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sterile techniques, and patient safety concepts as well as ethical and legal concepts. A surgical technologist must have an understanding of the hospital organization, policies, and procedures.

    Job opportunities and salaries in the healthcare specialty of surgical technology have been rising steadily over the last few years, and the U.S. Department of Labor predicts employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 30% from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Advances in medical technology have made surgery safer, and more operations are being done to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. The median annual wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 in May 2012.

    Most surgical technologists are employed by hospitals, day-surgery centers with the remainder working in the offices of physicians. After two years of experience, a certified surgical technologist may apply to become a traveling surgical technologist.

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical externships at local hospitals. Both career-specific and academic core courses are included. Students successfully completing the program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam (CST).

    Surgical Technology Program classes are given days, nights and on weekends (based on the availability of the instructors). Clinical externships, however, must take place during the daytime.

    • To give students an understanding the need for surgical intervention
    • To develop an understanding of the role of surgical technologist as a member of the surgical team
    • To instruct students in the responsibilities which the performance of this role entails
    • To assist students in developing the knowledge of the organizational structure of the hospitals, its departments and the operating room
    • To develop a basic understanding of biological science as it relates to safe operating room procedure
    • To facilitate the hands-on, supervised experience in the operating room performing the duties of a surgical technologist.

    Admissions criteria and requirements

    Prospective students must meet the college’s minimum requirements. Applicants must submit proof of high school or GED completion with official high school transcript or GED equivalent. Lackawanna College will determine the applicant’s current academic ability based on a combination of following:

    • SAT or ACT test scores, if applicable
      • Recommended SAT scores: 470 Verbal and 470 Math.
      • Recommended ACT scores: 20 or higher in each relevant section.
      • Most scores are valid up to 3 years from test date.
    • College Transfer Credits
      • If transferring credits from another college/university, official college transcripts are required.
    • Placement Test
      • Applicants without valid SAT/ACT scores and who have not previously earned college credits will be required to take the ACCUPLACER exam for determination of current academic ability. Applicants must achieve College Ready scores in Reading, Writing, and Math to be considered qualified for the Surgical Technology program.

    Due to the very specific nature of these degree programs, applicants with transfer credits may only transfer credits related to program core courses including the following:

    • Anatomy and Physiology I – 4 credits
    • Anatomy and Physiology II – 4 credits with lab (if taken within two years)
    • College Algebra
    • Computer Applications
    • College Writing
    • Effective Speaking
    • Introduction to Psychology
    • Medical Ethics (subject to review)

    Interviews will be scheduled for qualified Surgical Technology program applicants who submit a fully completed application. A mandatory informational meeting will be required prior to start of the selected program.Qualified students will be notified of the date and time upon selection into program. The meeting will review the Surgical Technology department’s policies and expectations. The meeting will also allow for question and answer session and tour of the Lackawanna College facilities.

    Curriculum

    Changes in the curriculum for this program have been approved by ARC/STSA and will be in effect for students beginning their studies in the Fall 2017 cohort.

    We stayed here for 3 nights last month. This was our first visit to Vancouver and the hotel did not disappoint! Granville Island was mobbed during the day and our friends with rental cars had a lot of trouble getting into the city and to the hotel but once there, it is a little oasis. At night, the traffic clears. More

    The location was perfect, we did not need a car. Lots of things to do and see right on the Island for our son (8 yr old) and for us. Beautiful walks to nearby restaurants, theatre etc. We enjoyed our stay very much. It s a bit pricey but for us it was worth it, this time.

    We stayed at the Villa Motel in Nelson for 1-night on the B.C. Day long weekend ($101). The motel is located on a small knoll just across the bridge as you leave Nelson. It is a long, narrow building, 2-stories on one side and one on the other, with the office in the middle and a parking lot in front – just another roadside motel. But as you drive in, you begin to notice a few differences – the nice little table and chairs in front of each unit, its impeccable maintenance, ongoing work to improve the grounds.

    Our room was on the 2nd floor of a separate building that housed the pool and jacuzzi (heavily chlorinated) on the ground floor. It was almost a small suite, with a sitting area (sofa, table, chest of drawers, huge 36 in flat screen TV) in front and the bedroom (queen bed, end tables, open clothes rack) in the back. There were windows in the bedroom and sitting area, but they opened onto public areas, so the blinds must be drawn, making the room a bit dark. The room was meticulously clean, with new carpet and paint; AC and mini-refrigerator in the sitting area, but no in-room safe. The bathroom was small, but with new fixtures; the water temperature in the shower, however, fluctuated in an annoying way. There were sitting areas on the balcony in front of the room, and a picnic area below on the grass.

    The motel’s biggest drawback was its continental breakfast. Virtually nothing was provided – just weak coffee and some cereal. There was a waffle machine, but the batter had been sticking to the grill, leaving chunks of torn waffles everywhere. There was a toaster, but no bread was provided.

    In summary, the Villa Motel is a roadside motel that the owners are obviously making efforts to maintain and upgrade. Unfortunately, it does not deliver the quality I would expect at the price charged. Try it only if you have run out of other options.

    Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. It is great to hear our work on our exterior is being noticed. Thank you for that kind feedback. On behalf of our morning breakfast staff, allow me to apologize for the service you received during our complimentary continental.

    We do understand our free breakfast service is not entirely working out the way we had planned. This motel was acquired almost 10 years ago. There was no breakfast area for our guests however we wanted to offer one for our guests on the go. We settled to use our lobby area, which is quite limited in space. We understood a few years ago that this was not a permanent solution as the #1 complaint about us was about the free breakfast we offered. Starting in 2018, the Villa Motel will be starting a new restaurant on-site that will be offering a paid hot breakfast buffett and an a la carte menu.

    This year we are looking to upgrade our standard queen rooms. It just took us awhile longer to upgrade our suites and kitchenettes, perhaps more than expected initially.

    I strongly feel our room rate is very competitive. The other inns and motels in town are offering similar rates (-10/+30) and the hotels priced +50 to +120. Most of the inns and motels do not have a breakfast on site, swimming pool, hot tub, laundry services, restaurant on site, and free parking. Also remember that during the month of your stay it is very often that all of Nelson accommodations do sell out. This is the prime time of the year. We will always continue to keep our rates at a competitive price.

    We take pride in that each year we continually improve the motel and the services. We also understand we haven’t been able to reach the standard we set as our goal during the past 9 years, although we’ve made great strides forward.

    Please do visit Nelson, BC again as this region is almost magically beautiful.

    I frequently visit here as my daughter is a very busy birthing doula. staying here allows me to do be fine on my own when she is busy. I can walk everywhere or take a short water taxi or bike. Its a great location and I feel very safe here. its also quiet for sleeping.

    An excellent boutique facility in an interesting location. Granville Island is a unique opportunity to be close to various activities and sites. Wether you want to walk around the Island and visit the various art facilities, restaurants or the fantastic market or take a bicycle for a ride, this is the place to be.

    End-of-Life Care

    End-of-life care is supportive and compassionate care that focuses on comfort,quality of life, respect for personal health care treatment decisions, support for the family, and psychological, cultural and spiritual concerns for dying people and their families. Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illness whatever the diagnosis. Care can be provided wherever the client is living, whether at home, in hospice, an assisted living residence or a residential care facility.

    End-of-life and palliative care services aim to preserve an individual s comfort, dignity and quality of life as their needs change, and to offer on-going support for family and friends. These services include the following: care co-ordination and consultation, pain and symptom management, community nursing services, community rehabilitation services, home support, respite for the caregiver and residential hospice care.

    How do I arrange for end-of-life care and palliative care services?

    If you are interested in receiving end-of-life care or palliative care services or know of someone who might be in need of these services, you can contact the home and community care office of your health authority or you can have a health care professional make a referral on your behalf.     Is there a cost for end-of-life care and palliative care services?

    There may be a cost for end-of-life care or palliative care services, depending on the type of services you require.

    There is no cost for community nursing services or community rehabilitation services if you are receiving care at home. Some medications and palliative supplies and equipment are available free of charge for eligible patients through the B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program. In addition, there is no cost for home support services if you are enrolled with the B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program. For more information, please see the B.C.     If you require publicly subsidized residential hospice palliative care, you will pay a fixed daily rate of $32.50 per day. For more information on costs or eligibility for short-term residential care services (which includes residential hospice palliative care), please see:

    End-of-Life Care and Palliative Services in Long-Term Residential Care

    Supportive and compassionate care can be provided to people who are nearing the end of their lives who are receiving long-term residential care services.

    When first admitted to a residential care facility, a person s immediate needs are assessed and a transitional care plan is made. Usually within six weeks of admission, the care is reviewed with the person s family as the person settles in the new environment.

    End-of-life and palliative care services available to clients receiving long-term residential care services include:

    • Pain and symptom assessment and management
    • Psychological care
    • Loss and grief support for family caregivers
    • Access to specialized prescription medication, supplies and equipment.

    These services are also available to clients receiving short-term residential care services.

    B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program

    The B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program supports B.C. residents of any age who have reached the end stage of a life-threatening illness and want to receive medically-appropriate palliative care at home. Home is wherever the person is living, whether in their own home, with family or friends, in an assisted living residence or in a hospice that is not a licensed residential care facility covered under PharmaCare Plan B.

    The intent of the B.C. Palliative Care Benefits Program is to allow patients to receive palliative care at home rather than be admitted to hospital. The program gives palliative patients access to the same drug benefits they would receive in hospital, and access to some medical supplies and equipment from their health authority.

    The program includes full coverage of approved medications, equipment and supplies (upon referral to and assessment by the local health authority).

    Types of Publicly Subsidized Care

    Publicly subsidized home and community care services are provided to people who are able to continue to live in their own homes and to people who require care in a supportive housing environment.

    Community Nursing

    Community nursing services are provided by a licensed nursing professional to clients in the community who require acute, chronic, palliative or rehabilitative support. Services include assessment and nursing interventions such as education, wound care, medication management, chronic disease management, care management, post-surgical care and palliative care. Generally, community nursing services will be provided on a short-term basis and community nurses assist clients and their families to be confident in taking over care at home.

    Community nursing services may be provided in a variety of settings such as clinics, the client s home, assisted living residences, family care homes, group homes, or other community settings.

    Community Rehabilitation

    Adult Day Services

    Adult day services include an organized program of personal care, health care and therapeutic social and recreational activities in a group setting that meet client health care needs and/or caregiver needs for respite.

    In some cases transportation is provided, while in others clients are responsible for their own transportation to and from the program. Many adult day service programs are connected with residential care facilities, while others operate independently.

    Home Support

    Home support services are designed to help clients remain independent and in their own home as long as possible.     Short-Term

    Short-term residential care services are provided on a short-term basis (usually less than three months) and include convalescent care, residential hospice palliative care and respite care.

    • Respite care provides a client s main caregiver a period of relief, it can also provide a client with a period of supported care to increase their independence.
    • Convalescent care is provided to clients with defined and stable care needs who require a supervised environment for reactivation or recuperation prior to discharge home, most commonly following an acute episode of care.
    • Residential hospice palliative care is provided to clients who require support with comfort, dignity and quality of life in the final days or weeks of their lives, and is distinct from end-of-life care provided to residential care clients who become palliative.
