7 Types of Computer Animation Software Worth Knowing

The animation industry has countless styles and demands in both the 2D and 3D industry each year. If you have a deep understanding of animation principles, then each piece of software can be viewed as merely a different tool for accomplishing what you need, but there’s no denying that each program has its own perks that are unique from the rest. Most animators will be challenged to learn whatever software their studio chooses, but if you have the option of picking your own, then this is a great place to start before making a choice.

For creating 2D animation of any kind, Flash and FlipBook should be the very first two programs you consider. DigiCel’s FlipBook animation software does it all, from scanning to digital painting to mattes to lighting and any other novice or veteran trick you might need. While most companies boast their software is perfection one year, and then curiously have a long list of new features in their yearly update, FlipBook instead has remained mostly unchanged in 15 years because it already has everything it needs. If you’re a 2D animator who wants minimal computer involvement, then FlipBook is a must .

If you want to make Web animations but don’t want to do it on paper and scan it all in, or if you’re an amateur who just wants to make something quick without having to tween frames yourself, or even if you’re a professional animation studio who wants to reach a large audience on the Web, then Flash is a great low budget easy solution with a lot of options. It’s rarely used to create films or long animations, but for something like a short commercial or public service announcement, it’s perfect. Google and other huge companies still use it from time to time when showcasing their new product releases.

Blender (The Blender Foundation)

Did you love Flash, but now need an “easy to learn and use” equivalent for 3D animation software? If so, then you should start here. Not only is it small and not processor demanding, but it’s also free and comes with a Web community that offers hundreds of free classes and tutorials on its site. It’s also been used to make award winning short films and has plenty of advanced features that are worth checking out.

Poser (Smith Micro Software)

If your job is to just 3D model, skin, rig, scene light, texture, or any other 3D specialty, then you’re the unsung hero on AnimationCareerReview, and you have our staff’s respect! However, if you just exclusively want to work on animation, and showcase purely your animation skills, then why bother with the rest? If that describes you, then Poser should be high on your consideration list since it comes with a free library of base human and animal 3D meshes that will save you large amounts of time. Yes, it can do other things as well, but not as well as the others on this list.

3ds Max (Autodesk)

Arguably the iPhone equivalent of the 3D animation industry, it has been – and still is – impressively ubiquitous in all 3D markets, and is arguably still the king of the competition. There’s almost nothing it can’t do that any other software on the market can accomplish, and if you can afford its high price tag then you’ll definitely get your money’s worth .

Even though Autodesk acquired Maya in 2005, they’re still in competition with one another, and slightly catered toward different needs. It depends on what person or studio you talk to, but often the answer you’ll get is that Maya is friendlier to animators’ specific needs than 3ds Max is, but they’re both still exceptional programs that everyone should consider. Chances are good that over the span of your career you’ll eventually need to learn both, so you may as well get a head start!

Cinema 4D (Maxon)

There are plenty of other animation software packages out there that compete with one another, but the one that stands out to me as gaining the most momentum in the past five years is Maxon’s Cinema 4D. It may not be as rampant in the 3D gaming industry, but it’s seen an abundance of use in the film industry for dozens of high budget box office hits. and because its popularity is newer by comparison, knowing it might give your career an edge as its demand rises.

Jeudi 29 juin a eu lieu la cinquième Soirée des partenaires de l’école, organisée par le service des Relations industrielles. L’événement a rassemblé environ quatre-vingt personnes, industriels, représentants du secteur économique régional, universitaires et étudiants.

Une table-ronde, animée par Fabien SOULIÉ, enseignant-chercheur, a abordé le thème de « La fabrication additive dans les applications industrielles, citoyennes, de la recherche et de la formation ».

Stéphane ABED, président de la société Poly shape, Yann LEFEBVRE, président du FabLab « LabSud », André CHRYSOCHOOS, directeur du centre PRO3D et Christian JORGENSEN, professeur au CHU de Montpellier et directeur de l’unité INSERM “Cellules souches, plasticité cellulaire, médecine régénératrice et immunothérapies”, sont intervenus pour partager leurs expériences et échanger sur les applications de ces technologies.

Les diverses interventions des invités ont permis de montrer le spectre très large des champs d’applications de ces nouvelles techniques de mise en œuvre de la matière, allant de l’industrie de pointe à la recherche médicale avancée, sans oublier les applications standardsaccessibles à tous ” précise Fabien Soulié.

Les présentations ont aussi su faire ressortir toutes les étapes de la démarche de conception, de dimensionnement et d’optimisation, préalables à la phase d’impressionproprement dite ” ajoute André Chrysochoos, concluant que “la fabrication additive est apparue aux participants comme une solution complémentaire aux techniques classiques de fabrication, mais possédant ses propres limites “.

Job Description for Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer

A computer aided design, or CAD, designer’s responsibilities revolve around taking blueprints and designs from engineers, and reformatting and representing them in a digital form. Rough product designs, building schematics, or additional product add-ons or modifications are examples of designs and documents that CAD designers are asked to reproduce on computers. In addition to recreating these designs, CAD designers also look over designs to ensure their creator has adhered to safety, quality and efficiency guidelines and other specifications.

The heavy reliance on mechanical engineering for a CAD designer means that an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is necessary, as is previous experience and knowledge of mechanical engineering technology. Knowledge of current engineering practices are critical for the CAD designer to be able to check the work of others and fix it if necessary. A CAD designer must also have extensive experience with computer science and a deep understanding of technology, including the capability to conduct 2D and 3D rendering and modeling with programs such as SolidWorks.

How to Run Disk Cleanup in Windows 8

Even though Disk Cleanup is not a very often used tool in Windows, it still does come in handy and I have found that it does a good job of getting rid of some stuff that other cleaners can t. In Windows 8, you can open Disk Cleanup in a number of ways. In this post, I ll walk you through the different ways to get to Disk Cleanup.

Disk Cleanup via Administrative Tools

The first way to get to Disk Cleanup is to go to the Control Panel and then open Administrative Tools and click on Disk Cleanup. Pretty straight-forward, but kind of a tedious process.

You can read my previous post on how to open the Control Panel in Windows 8 if you re having trouble doing that.

Disk Cleanup via Search Charm

The easiest way to open Disk Cleanup is to open the Charms bar and then click on Search. Type in Disk Cleanup and then click on Settings .

Click on Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files. This will bring up Disk Cleanup.

Disk Cleanup via Run Dialog

Another way to do this is to open a run dialog and type in the direct executable for disk cleanup. Go to the Start Screen, right-click and choose All apps at the bottom. Scroll to the right and then click on Run. Type in Cleanmgr.exe .

Pin to Start Screen

If you really use it a lot, you can right-click on Disk Cleanup in Administrative Tools and choose Pin to Start or Pin to Taskbar .

Show Administrative Tools

Lastly, if you use a lot of the tools under Administrative Tools, you can add them all to the Start Screen and All apps list by going to the Start Screen, opening the Charms bar, clicking on Settings and then clicking on Tiles .

Under Show administrative tools. go ahead and switch the bar to Yes .

Now all the Administrative Tools, including Disk Cleanup, will show up on the Start Screen and on the All apps list.

That s about it! There are many ways to get to settings and apps in Windows 8, so feel free to customize it to the way you like. Enjoy!

For three weeks each May, English education master’s students head to the Department of Justice’s Birchwood High School to help youth improve their reading.

How to successfully recover data from a failed RAID

Recovering data from a failed RAID can easily turn into a costly ordeal. Please read this page carefully before proceeding. If you would like to get help from experts, please consider using our fee-based RAID recovery service.

First determine whether the RAID is hardware-based or software-based. The recovery procedures are very different.

Recovering a hardware RAID

First determine if the problem is caused by the underlying RAID mechanism. If it is not, follow the simpler recovery procedures for an ordinary drive. The following causes of problem are not related to the RAID:

  • Virus attacks.
  • The volume being deleted, resized, reformatted or otherwise changed in Disk Manager or other disk management utilities.

If the problem seems to be in the RAID mechanism, determine the operating state of the RAID and take the appropriate actions.

Avoid the most common mistakes that may cause data to become unrecoverable.

Hardware RAID operating states

Current status is normal.
No controller or disk errors.
No recent change in RAID configuration.

RAID is displayed as a single disk.

Volume is inaccessible or accessible with missing files.

RAID mechanism is operating normally .
Problem may be unrelated to RAID.

RAID is displayed as a single disk.
No drive letter or unformatted volume (screenshot ).

RAID is displayed as a single disk.
Disk Manager is not aware of degradation (screenshot ).

Volume is accessible

RAID is degraded due to a disk failure

April 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Ricoh USA, Inc. today announced the latest in a series of sustainability milestones, including a new solar array that will power its West Caldwell, N.J. office facility. The array, which is set to provide for more than half of the facility’s electrical needs, literally represents the power of Ricoh’s ongoing sustainability efforts. This is the latest example of Ricoh’s environmental consciousness and measurable progress in sustainability efforts.

    The solar array project began in March 2014. through collaborative work with EnterSolar. a leading New York City -based provider of solar solutions to commercial enterprises. Now live, the array is expected to generate more than 790,000 Kwh per year, providing more than 50 percent of the facility’s electrical needs. That translates to approximately 1.3 million miles driven by an average passenger vehicle, 555 fewer metric tons of CO2 produced per year and $1.9 million in energy savings over the next 10 years. The array itself is roughly 1.3 times the size of a football field.

    What does a Animator (2D computer animation) do?

    Animators do everything relating to their scenes, including plotting the camera moves, editing the soundtrack (if required), charting information on dope sheets and producing a composited version of their work for comments from the Director or Animation Director .

    In principle, the role of Animator is the same for all techniques of animation; the differences are in the tools used and in some of the skills required. Most professional 2D computer animation work in the UK is produced on one of two packages, either Flash or CelAction. The animation process can differ for both programmes. In addition, different studios set up production in different ways, with animators taking on various responsibilities beyond just animation.

    In CelAction, good draughtsmanship is not always needed from Animators because all the elements will be provided in a comprehensive design pack which can contain not only designs, but also layouts, storyboard and soundtrack. From this material, Animators create the action, developing character and performance; a process comparable to a model animator being given a puppet or model to animate.

    Flash is more of a universal tool and Animators can find themselves doing a bit of everything. Design and drawing skills are more likely to be required because, depending on the project, Animators may be working from rough storyboards or producing their own layouts, sometimes as drawn artwork to be scanned in to the computer.

    In addition to creating the animated movement and performance, Animators are responsible for the consistent design and line quality of their animation. On some projects, Animators may be expected to be involved in the digital compositing and editing stages.

    Animators may develop skills and preferences for different aspects of animation, such as special effects or lip sync, and consequently find they work mainly in those areas.

    Will I need a qualification?

    To be an Animator in 2D computer animation, it will help you to have an animation, film or illustration degree. It would also help you to have training in 2D drawn animation but, for some studios, good drawing can be a lower priority.

    If you are considering taking an animation or film course in higher education, the following courses have been rigorously assessed by the animation and film industries and awarded the Creative Skillset Tick for the high standard of education they provide and the degree to which they prepare you for an animation or film career:

    For this role, portfolios are less important than showreels demonstrating your talent for animation, design, acting and timing.

    While many Animators working in 2D computer animation are graduates, different studios have different philosophies about recruiting and you will always be hired on the strength of your work. Personal work demonstrating animation talent and an understanding of filmmaking can be a useful addition to a showreel, and could help you get an Animator job without having a degree.

    What s the best route in?

    There is no typical career route to follow to become a 2D Computer Animator. One of the more likely routes you can follow is to be an animation graduate with some knowledge of 2D drawn animation.

    You could also achieve this role having been a 2D animator, 2D drawn effects animator, web designer, storyboard artist or illustrator.

    Where might the role take me?

    With the right talents and strong ambition, you could progress to be Animation Director, Art Director, Designer or Director. You could also move into 3D computer animation.     Firefighters used to fight fires. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, during the past 35 years, the number of fires in the United States has fallen by more than 40%.According to the Boston Globe, for example, Boston city records show a decrease in major fires from 417 in 1975 to just 40 in 2012. Better building codes, automatic sprinkler systems, smoke alarms, and increased public awareness of safety measures have all contributed to the decrease.

    So, while firefighters certainly still fight fires, they also focus on public education, fire inspections, and other forms of community outreach to foster fire prevention. In addition, many firefighters are trained EMTs or paramedics. Fighting actual fires has also become more complex, and special units of firefighters are trained to handle everything from hazardous materials incidents to rescuing victims from building collapses.

    As the field has changed, it’s become more and more professional. While a high school diploma is often still the minimum requirement to become a firefighter, many aspiring firefighters also pursue advanced degrees, such as associates, bachelors or masters degrees in fire science. They find having a degree is beneficial in this highly competitive field.

    In June 2013, the Las Vegas Fire Department received 500 online applications in just 24 minutes for 24 fire trainee job openings. If yours is one of 500 or more resumes being considered, you’re going to need to stand out in some way. Job candidates with more than a high school education will have an advantage. It’s not unusual today for firefighters to have at least a two-year degree. A degree in fire science opens the door to careers in fire prevention, fire safety, fire response, and fire investigation.

    Fire science degrees are also valuable to those already working in the field as firefighters, as they afford opportunities for advancement. With a combination of experience and education, firefighters can move into positions such as fire inspector and fire investigator.

    And, if you aspire to a leadership position such as being a fire chief or an emergency services director, you will likely need a master’s degree.

    Types of Degree Programs

    Fire science degrees can be general or specific to a fire science specialty, such as fire prevention, fire suppression, or fire services leadership. They can be tailored to the entry-level firefighter or to those with experience who want to advance their careers. Options include:

    Certificates. Certificates are not degrees, per se, but rather a type of credential that indicates you’ve had training in a particular area, such as fire inspection or arson investigation. Certificates are generally short courses that take less than one year to complete, and are open to high school graduates.

    Associate Degrees. Associate degree programs are offered by community colleges and typically take two years of full-time study to complete. You must have a high school diploma to enroll in an associate degree program. Fire science associate degrees prepare students for entry-level firefighting positions.

    Bachelor’s Degrees. A bachelor’s degree in fire science will generally take four years of full-time study. While these degrees have been traditionally sought by current firefighters seeking advancement, more and more entry-level candidates are pursuing bachelor’s degrees as a competitive advantage to getting hired.

    Master’s Degrees. Master’s degrees are considered terminal degrees – the most advanced degree you can obtain – in the field of fire science. They take two years of full-time work, although many pursue their master’s degrees on a part-time basis. Firefighters interested in becoming chiefs or holding other high-level leadership positions should consider obtaining a master’s degree.

    It’s important to note that a certificate or degree does not take the place of any additional training required by municipal fire departments. Entry-level firefighters, whether they have a degree or not, must typically complete about 600 hours of training over the course of 12 to 14 weeks at a fire academy designated by their hiring fire department.

    Online Fire Science Degree Options

    There are a variety of options for obtaining an online fire science degree. Since this is a hands-on training field, however, degrees that are delivered fully online tend to focus on administration and policy topics and are of the most value to working fire service professionals who’ve already had field training. Hybrid programs, where some of the content is learned online and some in person, are good options for those without experience. Firefighters living in remote areas without access to a local campus are great candidates for online learning, as are older firefighters looking for a career change within the industry.

    Associate degree coursework typically includes classroom and hands-on training, and even internships. Students become familiar with firefighting equipment and learn how to maintain it. Field training can include fighting actual, albeit controlled, fires and working alongside firefighting professionals in a fire station.

    What is computer security?
    According to www.cert.org, Computer Security is the process of preventing and detecting unauthorized use of your computer. It involves the process of safeguarding against intruders from using your computer resources for malicious intents or for their own gains (or even gaining access to them accidentally).
    Computer security is a branch of Information Security and is often used interchangeably with the term. It encompasses several security measures such as software programs like anti-virus suites, firewalls, and user dependant measures such as activating deactivating certain software features like Java scripts, ActiveX and being vigilant in using the computer and the network resources or the Internet.

    Computer Security is concerned with four main areas:
    1. Confidentiality:- Only authorized users can access the data resources and information.
    2. Integrity:- Only authorized users should be able to modify the data when needed.
    3. Availability:- Data should be available to users when needed.
    4. Authentication:- are you really communicating with whom you think you are communicating with

    Why is computer security so important?
    Prevention of data theft such as bank account numbers, credit card information, passwords, work related documents or sheets, etc. is essential in today�s communications since many of our day to day actions depend on the security of the data paths.
    Data present in a computer can also be misused by unauthorized intrusions. An intruder can modify and change the program source codes and can also use your pictures or email accounts to create derogatory content such as pornographic images, fake misleading and offensive social accounts.

    Malicious intents can also be a factor in computer security. Intruders often use your computers for attacking other computers or websites or networks for creating havoc. Vengeful hackers might crash someone�s computer system to create data loss. DDOS attacks can be made to prevent access to websites by crashing the server.
    Above factors imply that your data should remain safe and confidential. Therefore, it is necessary to protect your computer and hence the need for Computer Security arises.

    Deterrents to maintaining safety and measures that can be taken to prevent intrusion:-
    The most widely used attacks against a computer system are Trojans/trapdoors, worms, social networking and eavesdropping (aka man-in-the-middle attack.) Also popular are DoS/DDoS attacks, which can be used to disrupt services. Often insiders i.e. authorized users are generally directly involved in data theft and misuse too. If proper measures are taken such attacks can largely be prevented (e.g. through different levels of access, or by limiting physical access).
    Measures include installing legally purchased software, as they are generally free from such Trojans or viruses, using good anti-virus solutions with properly defined system rules. Hardware and software firewalls help in blocking unauthorized users from accessing your computer. Using a large complex password comprising of several special characters, numbers and alphabets helps in making it largely impossible for a hacker to crack your account easily. Also being careful against social engineering to get your details can help. There have been many such examples of such lapses on user side in which they reveal their passwords to strangers or log on to important sites from unsafe computers resulting in data theft or loss.
    Cryptography (especially encryption) plays an important role in keeping our sensitive information safe and secret. (For further information, check my presentation slides.)

    Education Pathways – Choose a path that is right for you

    EIT now has several education pathways available to you, allowing you more flexibility and choice.

    Completing an EIT Advanced diploma provides a convenient exit point which ensures that you still receive a qualification should you need withdraw from your studies early. If you successfully complete an EIT Advanced Diploma and choose to continue your studies, you will be eligible to receive credit for a significant proportion of an EIT bachelor degree, fast-tracking your studies.

    Alternatively, if you have completed a prior qualification from another institution, you may still be eligible to apply for credit. If successful, you may choose to progress through a Bachelor degree, with part-time or full-time, completing the required units as they are scheduled.

    If you are not eligible to apply for credit, you can enter directly into our Bachelor program, and select either a full-time or part-time intensive study load depending on your personal circumstances.

    You are now able to progress smoothly through to a Master qualification, with our unique, practical delivery model. In some cases you are able to select between our interactive online approach or classroom based learning (or a combination of both); however this is subject to availability.     Certificate Requirements

    Students enrolled in graduate certificate programs through UMass Lowell must complete all courses indicated in the curriculum outline. Students are required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 with no more than one course grade below B to receive the certificate.

    Once you have completed all courses in a graduate certificate program, please complete and submit via mail or fax the Graduate Certificate Clearance Form to the Registrar’s Office.


    The Division of Online & Continuing Education offers courses during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Approximately two months prior to the start of each semester, we post the upcoming semester course schedule on our website. Once you know which course(s) you would like to take, current students can register using SIS Self-Service. while new students, who have not already applied and been accepted into a program, must use the Non-Degree Registration Form.

    You may take courses without being officially enrolled in a certificate or degree program, but you must meet the particular course prerequisites. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Class size is limited. We recommend that you register early to reserve your place in class.

    Applying into an Online Graduate Certificate Program

    UMass Lowell Graduate Certificate Programs provide knowledge and expertise that are vital in today’s rapidly changing workplace. In many cases, graduate certificate courses may be applied toward a master’s degree at UMass Lowell. Most graduate certificates consist of four courses, for a total of 12 graduate credits. This is a great way to earn a graduate-level credential on the way to earning your master’s.

    Application Fee is $50.00 for all applicants. NO Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for graduate certificate programs. Credits earned from a graduate certificate may be used toward a related graduate degree with the approval of the graduate program coordinator. Students who complete a graduate certificate with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better in a UMass Lowell graduate certificate program may be able to waive the GRE when applying to a related master’s degree. Graduate Certificate Programs must be completed within a five-year period with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and with not more than two courses with a grade below B. Courses completed for one certificate may not be used for other certificates. Once you have completed all of the courses required for your certificate, please complete and submit the Graduate Certificate Clearance Form.

    Graduate Program Admissions Requirements

    Admission to all graduate programs at UMass Lowell is contingent upon successful completion of a bachelor’s degree. In many cases, applicants may register for a course before they have formally applied into the program; however, students requiring financial aid may want to wait until they have been formally accepted into the program to ensure that their course(s) will be covered.     UltraVnc Installation

    • Start the setup and choose the installation language.
    • Click Next on the Welcome screen.
    • Accept the license agreement.
    • Read the release notes.
    • Select the destination directory where UltraVNC should be installed.
    • Select the components which should be installed.
      Note. Updating the driver is experimental and not guaranteed to work at the moment.
    • Select the Start Menu folder where the program’s shortcuts should be placed.
    • Select additional tasks:
      • Select if UltraVNC server should be registered as a system service.
      • Select if UltraVNC service should be started or restarted.
      • Select if MSLogon II should be configured.

      • Select if old UltraVNC registry entries should be removed.
      • Select if additional desktop icons should be created for UltraVNC server, viewer and repeater.
      • Select if files with extension .vnc should be associated with UltraVNC viewer.
    • Specify location of ACL file.
      The format of the ACL file should follow the MSLogonACL specification.
      If no ACL file is specified, the Administrators group is configured. This works only on the English OS versions.
    • Specify location of Properties file.
      The Properties file should be a valid registry file.
      The intention is to populate the \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL key.
      If no Properties file is specified, no options are configured.
    • Verify if you choose the correct installation settings.
    • Read what’s new in UltraVNC.
    • Click “Finish” to end the installation.

    Automate Installation

    If you need to install UltraVNC on a large number of computers, you might consider automating the installation.

    The following command line parameters can be passed to the setup:

    /dir=”Dirname ” Sets installation directory to Dirname. /no restart Suppresses a reboot at the end of the installation.
    Not required since the installation no longer requires are boot. /silent or /very silent Suppresses either pop-up of dialog boxes or any GUI at all. /loadinf=”Filename ” Loads the configuration file Filename for the installation.
    This configuration file can be generated by going through setup with UltraVNC-xxxx-Setup.exe /saveinf=”Filename ” .
    Filename should be fully qualified. /log Writes a log file to the Temp directory.
    Could be used for debugging.

    What Is Computer Animation?

    Computer animation involves creating moving images with the help of computers. This type of animation is used in films, television shows, video games, and advertisements.

    To create an animated scene, computer animators generally start with one picture, known as a frame.     Coming to Scranton for Fall 2017!

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is designed to be completed over a two-year period with day, evening, and Saturday courses as well as on- and off-campus clinical hours. Each program also includes summer session courses and clinical lab hours.

    Acceptance into Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is based on a selective admissions process with a maximum of 15 students selected annually.

    Degree information

    Through a balance of classroom instruction and clinical experience, the student will acquire applied skills and knowledge in the field of Surgical Technology.

    Surgical technologists work in the operating room under the direct supervision of a surgeon and a registered nurse. Surgical technologists help facilitate the draping, and prepping of the surgical patient. They gown, and glove other team members. They get all the instruments, supplies, equipment necessary for specific surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile team, surgical technologists will hand all necessary instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members.

    A surgical technologist has a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sterile techniques, and patient safety concepts as well as ethical and legal concepts. A surgical technologist must have an understanding of the hospital organization, policies, and procedures.

    Job opportunities and salaries in the healthcare specialty of surgical technology have been rising steadily over the last few years, and the U.S. Department of Labor predicts employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 30% from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Advances in medical technology have made surgery safer, and more operations are being done to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. The median annual wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 in May 2012.

    Most surgical technologists are employed by hospitals, day-surgery centers with the remainder working in the offices of physicians. After two years of experience, a certified surgical technologist may apply to become a traveling surgical technologist.

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical externships at local hospitals. Both career-specific and academic core courses are included. Students successfully completing the program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam (CST).

    Surgical Technology Program classes are given days, nights and on weekends (based on the availability of the instructors). Clinical externships, however, must take place during the daytime.

    • To develop an understanding of the role of surgical technologist as a member of the surgical team
    • To instruct students in the responsibilities which the performance of this role entails
    • To assist students in developing the knowledge of the organizational structure of the hospitals, its departments and the operating room
    • To develop a basic understanding of biological science as it relates to safe operating room procedure
    • To facilitate the hands-on, supervised experience in the operating room performing the duties of a surgical technologist.

    Admissions criteria and requirements

    Prospective students must meet the college’s minimum requirements. Applicants must submit proof of high school or GED completion with official high school transcript or GED equivalent. Lackawanna College will determine the applicant’s current academic ability based on a combination of following:

    • SAT or ACT test scores, if applicable
      • Recommended SAT scores: 470 Verbal and 470 Math.
      • Recommended ACT scores: 20 or higher in each relevant section.
      • Most scores are valid up to 3 years from test date.
    • College Transfer Credits
      • If transferring credits from another college/university, official college transcripts are required.
    • Placement Test
      • Applicants without valid SAT/ACT scores and who have not previously earned college credits will be required to take the ACCUPLACER exam for determination of current academic ability. Applicants must achieve College Ready scores in Reading, Writing, and Math to be considered qualified for the Surgical Technology program.

    Due to the very specific nature of these degree programs, applicants with transfer credits may only transfer credits related to program core courses including the following:

    • Anatomy and Physiology I – 4 credits
    • Anatomy and Physiology II – 4 credits with lab (if taken within two years)
    • College Algebra
    • Computer Applications
    • College Writing
    • Effective Speaking
    • Introduction to Psychology
    • Medical Ethics (subject to review)
    • Medical Terminology (subject to review)

    Interviews will be scheduled for qualified Surgical Technology program applicants who submit a fully completed application. A mandatory informational meeting will be required prior to start of the selected program.Qualified students will be notified of the date and time upon selection into program. The meeting will review the Surgical Technology department’s policies and expectations. The meeting will also allow for question and answer session and tour of the Lackawanna College facilities.


    Changes in the curriculum for this program have been approved by ARC/STSA and will be in effect for students beginning their studies in the Fall 2017 cohort.

    This degree program is moving to our Scranton campus in Fall 2017.
