It is seen by industry experts that for large enterprise with Large amount of data that frequently changes with limited network connectivity, the traditional on premise data backup solution works out better and cheaper.

I m sure you ve heard the following two words being used extensively online in the last couple of years. Cloud Computing. The next time you read something about a service that mentions Cloud , you will immediately know what they mean by that, and what exactly cloud computing is and how does it work.

What is Cloud Computing and how does it work, explained in simple terms?

Actually, you ve been using cloud computing all this time, unless you were living in a cave somewhere, and that cave somehow didn t have an internet connection.

So let me put this in as simple terms as possible:
Cloud Computing is the ability to use the power of other computers (located somewhere else) and their software, via the Internet (or sometimes other networks), without the need to own them. They are being provided to you, as a service .

That means you don t have to go and buy some super powerful gigantic computer system and risk have it sitting there, doing nothing. By utilizing the cloud, everything is ready for you whenever you might need it. Exactly where the hardware and software is located and how it all works doesn t matter to you, as a user. It s just somewhere up in the vast cloud that the Internet represents.
Now you know one of the reasons they call it the Cloud Computing.

For example, many businesses use cloud computing as a means of remote backup solutions to store and recover their data offsite.

To illustrate the point even better, let s go over one typical example of cloud computing that you must have used before (exception are those with the cave thing from above).

Google as an example of cloud computing

What happens when you type and search something on Google?
Have you ever thought about this? Does your PC go through all that information, sorts it out for you and display all the relevant results? No, it doesn t. Otherwise, you would wait much longer for a simple results page to display. A simple PC can t process all those billions of websites in a fraction of a second, like Google does. Your PC only serves as a messenger to tell Google what you are looking for. Everything else is done by some of Google s powerful computers located somewhere, Who-Knows-Where in the world.
Now, did you ever care about how or where that comes from? Why would you, right? Exactly. That s a great example of how cloud computing is used.

At this point, I m sure you understand what cloud computing is and the basic idea behind it. If that s everything you wanted to know, you can stop here, and go enjoy your life knowing what Cloud Computing is. If you are interested in just a little tiny bit more about it, continue reading to the end (not long from here).

3 Types of Cloud Computing

1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is basically when you buy raw computing hardware to use over the net, usually servers, or online storage. You buy what you need and pay-as-you-go. The best and the most basic example of this type of cloud computing is buying a web hosting for your website. You pay monthly fee to a hosting company for the storage on their servers and to have them serve up files for your website from those servers. Another good example of someone who provides these types of cloud services would be RackSpace cloud company .

2. Software as a Service (SaaS) is a case where you use the complete software application that s running on someone else s servers. The best example of this is Google Docs. which you can use for creating and storing text documents, presentations, spreadsheets and so on

3. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is case where you create applications using web-based tools so they run on systems software and hardware provided by another company. As an example, consider a situation where you develop your own e-commerce website but have the whole thing, including the shopping cart, checkout, and payment mechanism running on a merchant s server.

That should be all you need to know to get you started.

As you can see, the idea behind cloud computing is very powerful and useful beyond measure. Especially now when you actually know what it is.

Rackspace and Dell EMC Partner to Make Private Cloud Easier to Use

Rackspace is working with Dell EMC to offer a private cloud-as-a-service solution, according to an announcement on Monday at the OpenStack Summit in Boston. Rackspace said that it is the first step in an expanded relationship with Dell EMC where the partners will work to help make it easier to set up private clouds.

Customers will be able to combine Rackspace OpenStack Private Cloud with Dell EMC compute and storage solutions, according to the companies. Support for VMAX Hybrid, VMAX All Flash and Dell Servers will be provided initially, with support for Dell EMC ScaleIO forthcoming.

Even as some industry experts and researchers note that private cloud is losing steam as enterprises opt for workloads in the public cloud, the offering with Dell EMC will allow Rackspace to provide more options to its enterprise customers looking for a multi-cloud approach and tap demand for OpenStack.

Dell EMC is committed to providing customers with best in class solutions to simplify their OpenStack deployments while taking advantage of new innovations, Jay Snyder, SVP, Global Alliances, Industries and Service Providers at Dell EMC said in a statement. According to the announcement, the partners intend to lower the barrier to entry for private cloud, and provide the same elasticity of public cloud with security and performance benefits.

    Primary facets of IaaS

    Rather than imagining the Internet as a single global cloud, it is perhaps more accurate to imagine it as a system of many clouds, like a thunderstorm. With this metaphor, it could be logically asserted that lightning is the weather system equivalent of communication among clouds. This metaphor is perhaps more accurate in the sense that clouds systematically interact with each other to create a single result: the Internet.

    It is unlikely that the Internet will be made up of one single cloud at least in the near future because of the lack of standards in cloud computing and obvious attempts by companies to capitalize long term through vendor lock-in. Nevertheless, cloud computing would not have advanced to where it is currently if it weren’t for innovation in the spirit of capitalism. Perhaps one day, the Internet really will be a single, interconnected cloud in which VMs could be transferred effortlessly to “the cloud” without concern for file format and interconnected clusters of VMs could be managed across service providers, all through a single interface. But that day is a long way off. In the meantime, we’ll speak of the Internet as consisting of many clouds. (Ironically, I’m using the Apple MobileMe cloud to store this article so I can work on it on across several devices.)

    Meet the elastic infrastructure

    Elasticity is the first critical facet of IaaS. To illustrate the concept of elasticity, I’m going to require you to use your imagination for a moment. Pretend that clouds are actually made of marshmallow clusters stuck together so that people can sit and ride on them. Each marshmallow cloud can hold a certain number of people, depending on the number of marshmallow clusters that make up the cloud and how many marshmallows are contained in those clusters. As more people get on to ride the marshmallow cloud, you can expand the marshmallow clusters by sticking more marshmallows to them, increasing the surface area. As you have probably already figured out, the people represent the applications that require compute resources, such as those that host Web sites and run software services. The marshmallow clusters represent clusters of VMs, with each marshmallow a VM.

    Although this might sound like something you’d expect to find in a Dr. Seuss book, it provides a means of understanding a concept considered by many a dark art: elastic clustering. Clustering of physical servers to form a virtual cloud is a concept known as cloud clustering, and if it is in fact a dark art, then mastery is measured by the scalability of an artist’s system design.

    Let’s look at an example. Say that you’re a statistical researcher working for the U.S. government. The government is a bit short-handed, and you’ve just been tasked with compiling all the data from the latest U.S. census. You’re responsible for formulating the necessary statistical data so that Congress can make important decisions regarding the allocation of economic recovery funds and tax dollars three days from now. Needless to say, this is a pretty important job, and you’re on a bit of a time crunch. What’s more, the amount of data you must process is astronomical, and you just found out that the compute resources required to compile it is going to take the IT department three weeks to get ready!

    This is exactly the kind of problem that you can easily mitigate using IaaS. As a matter of fact, using IaaS, you could have the entire U.S. census data analysis completed within an hour. You’d start by creating a single instance of a server that contains the database software to run queries on the data. This is called an image.

    After you deploy the image and import the data into the database, you could then duplicate that image as many times as necessary and start running your data-processing tasks. While the tasks are running, you might manually or automatically add and remove resources. For example, if the compute tasks were not running quickly enough, simply add more duplicate machine instances to the cluster.

    Now that you understand the concept of elasticity, let’s take a look at the second major facet of IaaS: virtualization.

    Machine virtualization

    Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the founders of Google, had the right idea back in 1995 when they spent their evenings sifting through dumpsters behind Stanford University’s computer science building, pulling out disregarded computer parts. They’d bring these random x86-based computer parts back to their dorm room to add to the Frankenstein machine hosting the legendary rogue Web crawler that took down Stanford’s entire network twice.

    Today, it is estimated that Google has more than 1 million x86 servers in 12 major data centers and about 20 smaller centers on different continents. That’s a pretty big cloud. Two key factors to the system design allowed them to scale the dorm-room beast in 1995, and it still holds true for the million-plus servers in the Google network today. To this day, Google continues to use inexpensive x86 parts instead of the much more expensive enterprise server components found in many corporate data centers. Second, failover, redundancy, monitoring, clustering, and other infrastructure management tasks are handled by a virtualization system that runs beneath the operating system level rather than using separate hardware such as load balancers to handle such tasks.

    IaaS is easy to spot, because it is typically platform-independent. IaaS consists of a combination of hardware and software resources. IaaS software is low-level code that runs independent of an operating system called a hypervisor and is responsible for taking inventory of hardware resources and allocating said resources based on demand (see Figure 1 ). This process is referred to as resource pooling. Resource pooling by the hypervisor makes virtualization possible, and virtualization makes multi-tenant computing possible a concept that refers to an infrastructure shared by several organizations with similar interests in regard to security requirements and compliance considerations.

    With IaaS, you have the capability to provision processing, storage, networks, and other computing resources, where you can deploy and run arbitrary software such as operating systems and applications. Most use cases for cloud computing follow the same fundamental layering structure you are already used to: a software solution stack or platform is deployed on a network infrastructure, and applications are run on top of the platform. However, virtualization makes the cloud paradigm unique.

    Types of Cloud Computing

    There are 3 fundamental deployment models of cloud computing; public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud.

    A public cloud is where services and infrastructure are hosted off-site by a cloud provider, shared across their client base and accessed by these clients via public networks such as the internet. Public clouds offer great economies of scale and redundancy but are more vulnerable than private cloud setups due their high levels of accessibility.

    Private clouds use pooled services and infrastructure stored and maintained on a private network – whether physical or virtual – accessible by only one client. The obvious benefits to this are greater levels of security and control. Cost benefits must be sacrificed to some extent though, as the enterprise in question will have to purchase/rent and maintain all the necessary software and hardware.

    As the name suggests, a hybrid cloud combines both public and private cloud elements. A hybrid cloud allows a company to maximise their efficiencies; by utilising the public cloud for non-sensitive operations while using a private setup for sensitive or mission critical operations, companies can ensure that their computing setup is ideal without paying any more than is necessary.

    Models of Cloud Computing

    Broadly speaking, there are 3 models of cloud computing which describe the service on offer; these are Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

    Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

    As with the other cloud computing categories, IaaS refers to the delivery of virtualised computing resource as a service across a network connection. IaaS specifically deals with hardware – or computing infrastructure – delivered as a service. Offerings include virtualised server space, storage space, network connections and IP addresses. The resource is pulled from a pool of servers distributed across data centres under the provider’s control, the user is then granted access to this resource in order to build their own IT platforms. IaaS can provide enterprises with great business benefits.

    Platform as a Service (PaaS)

    PaaS is an extension of IaaS and describes a category of cloud computing that provides developers with environments in which to build applications over the internet. In addition to the fundamental computing resource supplied by the hardware in an IaaS offering, PaaS models also include the software and configuration (often known as the solution stack) required to create the platform on which clients can create their applications. PaaS packages can be tailored to meet individual user needs; they can cherry pick the features of the service that are relevant to them while disregarding those that are not. PaaS provides a number of benefits to enterprises, including simplifying the development process for geographically split development teams.

    Software as a Service (SaaS)

    SaaS is arguably the most common of the cloud computing variations; it’s the term used to describe a software delivery model in which applications are hosted (usually by a provider) and made available to customers over a network connection. Many people make use of SaaS without realising it as many web applications are delivered in this way.

    In an information technology (IT) context, software or hardware implementation encompasses all the post-sale processes involved in something operating properly in its environment, including analyzing requirements, installation, configuration. customization, running, testing, systems integrations, user training, delivery and making necessary changes. The word deployment is sometimes used to mean the same thing.

    For an implementation process to be successful, many tasks between different departments need to be accomplished in sequence. Companies strive to use proven methodologies and enlist professional help to guide them through the implementation of a system but the failure of many implementation processes often stems from the lack of accurate planning in the beginning stages of the project due to inadequate resources or unforeseen problems that arise.

    An IT system implementation usually starts with negotiating a contract with a vendor. a usually meticulous process that defines set guidelines, deadlines and a payment schedule for the entire implementation process. Contract requirements could include the outline of system performance criteria, penalties related to issues and delays in the implementation process, documentation. training and issue resolution requirements as well as vendor support after the system goes live in case of problems. Having detailed requirements agreed to in writing is a benefit to companies since it gives managers and users clear requirements to be met at different points throughout the process and holds the vendor accountable for the product.

    After a contract is agreed to and a project timeline is established, key business units must meet to discuss the organization’s future roadmap, the project’s scope and what a new system could achieve for the company. Usually, the main players at this stage include the IT team, top business executives and various sales teams, especially if the software/hardware being implemented is an enterprise-wide tool such as a CRM or ERP system.

    With various levels of the organization working together, each department must agree on clear, quantifiable and well-defined goals for the project and what they each hope to gain out of using the new technology. The company’s goals need to be measurable in order to assess results and to judge the success or failure of the system once it is implemented. Sometimes, this might require an auditor — either from a third party. a vendor, or someone internally — to be brought in to evaluate every customer-facing business process to diagnose problem areas or inefficiencies that need to be corrected. Once goals are established, the organization must develop a plan for checking in on the implementation’s status that often includes a timeline focused on achieving set objectives through various stages of the implementation process.

    Key players in the implementation process typically meet regularly to discuss the project’s progress, voice concerns and augment procedures as necessary. An organization may deem it necessary to appoint a program manager, someone with experience in the technical aspects of the technology as well as in project management. to oversee the implementation process from start to finish. Software implementations often involve people such as business analysts, solutions architects and technical analysts in the implementation process.

    After the process for any hardware or software implementation project moves through the planning stage, companies should gradually test the new system until it is ready to fully go live. A pilot program. where a small test group within the company runs the system as part of a trial for a finite period of time, is often a key component to any implementation process.

    Typically, a subsection of tech-savvy workers within a company is enlisted to try the new system because they would be most keen on picking out glitches or shortcomings of the system to further help the implementation process. After testing is complete, training programs focus on educating users about the new system and how to use it before the system eventually is ready to go live. At the end of the implementation when the system is about to go live, companies typically review the entire process and verify that all tasks have been completed.

    Software/hardware implementations should always be designed with the end user in mind and the implementation process usually benefits from user involvement and support from managers and other top executives in the company. If users participate in the design and implementation of the system, ideally it will serve their business objectives more accurately and reflect their priorities and the ways in which they prefer to work. Their involvement in the process also makes them more receptive to changes that need to be implemented because they have firsthand experience of what the system comprises.

    The user-designer communications gap is typically a hurdle companies must overcome to successfully implement a new system. Users have wants and needs that they hope to get from the system while designers and IT staff have to consider various restrictions, efficiencies and database management principles and limitations during the implementation process.

    Implementations inherently represent a change in a company’s existing technological architecture so it is common for implementation processes to encounter problems on both sides of the go-live date. To account for this, companies should keep close relationships with vendors and consultants to help them fix issues as they come up. Common problems that arise during implementations include the missing of deadlines, going over budget for the entire project, underestimating hours that staff is devoted to a project, running into unexpected delays or blockages due to an external partner and facing the withdrawal of support from key stakeholders or various unforeseen consequences that could otherwise slow the process down.
