Master of Construction Management (MCM)

Objectives and Description

The Master of Construction Management degree is an interdisciplinary program focused on management of construction projects. It includes elective courses from Architecture, Business, and Management. This Master’s degree is designed mainly for applicants with an undergraduate degree in civil engineering, but students with different undergraduate disciplines can enter the program taking the assigned leveling courses.

Construction Management

Advances in construction technologies, financing, and methods underscore the need for a sound and systematic management of construction projects. Organizational structures, business models, and the capability of implementing new technologies into practice necessitate advanced study in construction management. The Master of Construction Management degree at UT Arlington provides students interdisciplinary studies in commercial, residential, heavy/highway, and industrial applications to address a broad range of challenges facing the construction management field.

Available On Campus and Through Distance Learning

In addition to our traditional on-campus all-evening classroom environment, this program is available via distance delivery. This flexible option is ideal for engineering and construction professionals who choose to pursue an advanced degree while employed. Distance learning students are able to watch lecture materials online via the “Echo” system already established at the College of Engineering. Additionally, Blackboard course management system will be used for tests, class assignments, and group discussions.

The only courses that require laboratory work are CE 5379 (Construction Cost Estimating), and CE 5386 (Construction Planning and Scheduling). For these two courses, students are required to complete a number of laboratory exercises and complete a project. Since it is possible to provide students limited time versions of software used with these two courses (Primavera P6, Timberline, and Heavy Bid), students can complete lab exercises without physically being present at the UT Arlington Construction Laboratory.

Degree Plan and Program Requirements

The degree completion requires:

  • A minimum of 30 Credit Hours (10 courses). Some course combinations may add to more than 30 credit hours.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (A=4.0)
  • The minimum time required for earning the degree is expected to be two full semesters + summer (one year), or three semesters of full-time enrollment (one and one half years). Part-time enrollment is permitted. International students must meet full-time registration requirements.
  • All classes are taught late afternoons and evenings to accommodate working professionals.
  • Up to nine (9) transfer graduate credit hours (three courses) may be accepted from an accredited institution with the approval of the Program Director.
  • A 3-credit hour (CE 5395) independent study course (project) may be taken in substitution of one of the electives.

The Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Construction Management provides instruction in management skills and construction industry specific technical and occupational subjects, such as construction planning, design, and safety. This degree program prepares graduates for a productive career in the construction industry as a manager, project manager, or property manager. Graduates of this program will be prepared for productive management careers in the construction business with knowledge in construction ethics, estimating, and contracts. This degree program prepares graduates to sit for the LEED Green Associates exam in order to become a Certified LEED Green Associate .

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Construction Management provides students with a broad-based knowledge of the construction industry combined with a solid general education and extensive training in business and management applications as well as law, regulations, planning, design, theory and methods used in the construction field.

Overview

Electricians know the ins and outs of designing lighting systems, installing street lights and intercom systems, ensuring electrical work is up to code and repairing electrical wiring. Electricians must go through at least four years of training as an apprentice, followed by the licensing their state requires. Most in the profession specialize in either designing, installing, maintaining and repairing the motors, equipment and electrical systems of businesses and factories or installing, maintaining and repairing the electrical systems of residences.

“I like to work on projects that have complex systems, such as water and wastewater treatment facilities,” says Ryan Lee, a journeyman electrician and crew leader with the Ohio-based company Claypool Electric. “I am kind of a perfectionist, and these types of facilities require a great deal of accuracy to ensure that tasks are done accurately.”

There are other subsets, like electricians who specialize in iron and steel mills, or electricians who coordinate the lighting for a motion picture or television program. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the most stable employment is for electricians who work for businesses and factories. And this is a profession where employment is expected to blossom. Installing alternative energy sources in homes and businesses requires coordination with electricians, and these professionals are still needed to maintain older electrical systems. The BLS predicts this occupation will grow by 14 percent by 2024, which translates to 85,900 new positions.

In 2015, the mean wage for an electrician was $55,590. The highest-paid earned $88,130, while the lowest-paid electricians earned around $31,410 that year. An apprentice usually makes between 30 percent and 50 percent less than someone who is fully trained. Training

The job of an electrician is physically demanding and can be very dangerous if it’s not done correctly. That’s why a good training program is imperative. Some choose to attend a technical school before entering their apprenticeship program, although this isn’t required. And most program entrants are at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. However, not everyone enters the field at a young age.

Martin Messerly, another employee with Claypool Electric who had previously worked nearly three decades as a journeyman mean cutter, says, “I never knew there would be a way for me to become a state-certified journeyman electrician at this point in my life. I always thought that it was something that you had to do right out of high school. Now, I just finished my fourth year of apprenticeship training, and with a few more [on-the-job training] hours, I will be a state-certified journeyman electrician.”

Coming to Scranton for Fall 2017!

Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is designed to be completed over a two-year period with day, evening, and Saturday courses as well as on- and off-campus clinical hours. Each program also includes summer session courses and clinical lab hours.

Acceptance into Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is based on a selective admissions process with a maximum of 15 students selected annually.

Degree information

Through a balance of classroom instruction and clinical experience, the student will acquire applied skills and knowledge in the field of Surgical Technology.

Surgical technologists work in the operating room under the direct supervision of a surgeon and a registered nurse. Surgical technologists help facilitate the draping, and prepping of the surgical patient. They gown, and glove other team members. They get all the instruments, supplies, equipment necessary for specific surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile team, surgical technologists will hand all necessary instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members.

A surgical technologist has a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sterile techniques, and patient safety concepts as well as ethical and legal concepts. A surgical technologist must have an understanding of the hospital organization, policies, and procedures.

Job opportunities and salaries in the healthcare specialty of surgical technology have been rising steadily over the last few years, and the U.S. Department of Labor predicts employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 30% from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Advances in medical technology have made surgery safer, and more operations are being done to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. The median annual wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 in May 2012.

Most surgical technologists are employed by hospitals, day-surgery centers with the remainder working in the offices of physicians. After two years of experience, a certified surgical technologist may apply to become a traveling surgical technologist.

Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical externships at local hospitals. Both career-specific and academic core courses are included. Students successfully completing the program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam (CST).

Surgical Technology Program classes are given days, nights and on weekends (based on the availability of the instructors). Clinical externships, however, must take place during the daytime.

  • To give students an understanding the need for surgical intervention
  • To develop an understanding of the role of surgical technologist as a member of the surgical team
  • To instruct students in the responsibilities which the performance of this role entails
  • To assist students in developing the knowledge of the organizational structure of the hospitals, its departments and the operating room
  • To develop a basic understanding of biological science as it relates to safe operating room procedure
  • To facilitate the hands-on, supervised experience in the operating room performing the duties of a surgical technologist.

Admissions criteria and requirements

Prospective students must meet the college’s minimum requirements. Applicants must submit proof of high school or GED completion with official high school transcript or GED equivalent. Lackawanna College will determine the applicant’s current academic ability based on a combination of following:

  • SAT or ACT test scores, if applicable
    • Recommended SAT scores: 470 Verbal and 470 Math.
    • Recommended ACT scores: 20 or higher in each relevant section.
    • Most scores are valid up to 3 years from test date.
  • College Transfer Credits
    • If transferring credits from another college/university, official college transcripts are required.
  • Placement Test
    • Applicants without valid SAT/ACT scores and who have not previously earned college credits will be required to take the ACCUPLACER exam for determination of current academic ability. Applicants must achieve College Ready scores in Reading, Writing, and Math to be considered qualified for the Surgical Technology program.

Due to the very specific nature of these degree programs, applicants with transfer credits may only transfer credits related to program core courses including the following:

  • Anatomy and Physiology I – 4 credits
  • Anatomy and Physiology II – 4 credits with lab (if taken within two years)
  • College Algebra
  • Computer Applications
  • College Writing
  • Effective Speaking
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Medical Ethics (subject to review)

Interviews will be scheduled for qualified Surgical Technology program applicants who submit a fully completed application. A mandatory informational meeting will be required prior to start of the selected program.Qualified students will be notified of the date and time upon selection into program. The meeting will review the Surgical Technology department’s policies and expectations. The meeting will also allow for question and answer session and tour of the Lackawanna College facilities.

Curriculum

Changes in the curriculum for this program have been approved by ARC/STSA and will be in effect for students beginning their studies in the Fall 2017 cohort.

Construction Management (B.S.)

Description

The University offers a fully on-line bachelor of science (B.S.) in construction management. The program combines education and experience in both technical and managerial skills to prepare students for leadership roles in the construction profession. With its comprehensive, management-oriented focus, the program helps students understand the impact of construction on the environment and society and prepares students to be leaders in this exciting field.

  • The online bachelor’s degree in construction management includes an 81-credit major plus 39 credits of foundational studies (general education) for a total of 120 credits. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per these transfer guidelines .
  • The program provides instruction in: building design and planning; environmental control systems; principles of quality concrete and the proper techniques used in the field; project management, including construction costs, budgets, bids, critical path scheduling, inspection, manpower utilization, and cost control; theories of forces in building structures; and use of tapes, levels, and transits to layout structures, determine elevations, and locate boundaries.
  • Courses in the online degree in construction management are developed and taught by full-time professors who have work experience in the field. Students gain real-world experience through participation in the internship course, which provides actual work experience.
  • The program can be completed in four years (full time) if the student follows this program of study. Students also have the option of part-time study.
  • The Construction Management Program is open to eligible in-state and many out-of-state applicants. The program is closed to students residing in countries other than Canada and the United States (including U.S. Territories). The exceptions are U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.

All students enrolled in the Construction Management Program must have access to a Windows computer. Mac users will need to install Windows on the Mac. Some applications in the Program only run in the Windows operating system. This is nonnegotiable.
