Why We re the Best

Experience like no other. Repairing and constructing over 7,000+ foundations. We know homes.

There are a lot of companies offering foundation repair in the Los Angeles area. How do you know which one is best? We believe experience should be the deciding factor. Julian Construction was formed in 1994, and our focus has always been on building foundations, doing repair, replacement, earthquake retrofitting and house leveling. We have inspected over 16,500 foundations .

If you also talk to another foundation contractor, ask how long they have been doing foundation repair. Not how long they have been in business. But how long they have been doing foundation work. There are some contractors in the LA area who have been doing foundation work for a year or less. Would you trust the safety of your home to them?

When the safety of your home and family are at stake, we think you ll want to go with Julian, the company that has been working under homes for nearly 20 years.

Best value. Our affordability comes from the efficiency of expertise and smooth-running crews. All equipment and vehicles are company owned. Julian Construction also offers 0% financing .

100% expert oversight. From start to finish, licensed and expert managers oversee all projects, ensuring perfection, timeliness and safety.

About

We understand consumers often need the lowest price possible when it comes to choosing an auto insurance company. Our customers also want the right amount of coverage to keep their family safe and protected from life s unfortunate accidents.

At Cheap Car Insurance. we believe in having the best of both worlds — low rates, excellent coverage and local reps who are there every step of the way. This is what sets Cheap Car Insurance apart from our competition. And that’s what makes us the obvious choice when it comes to your car insurance needs.

Why We Exist

Extreme Savings

Our emphasis on red tape removal and streamlining translates to serious savings for our customers. In a world where corporate bloat is the inevitable outcome of mega-sized insurance companies, we focus on the exact opposite: making things easier and faster. When other companies are saying, How can we add another step to make things better? we are asking ourselves, How can we remove a step to make things better?

We also do not spend billions on advertising like some companies in attempts to attract every customer in the world because we prefer to pass those savings on to you and rely more heavily on our customers telling their friends about us. That s how good products should be sold.

Un-Corporate-Like Transparency

While other companies make empty promises about savings, we actually let our customers report them publicly for the world to see. Check out our Recent Savings chart to the left to view their unfiltered comments. True, not everyone saves money here, but most do.

We focus on improving the conversation with our customers, which has resulted in one of the highest satisfaction rating in the industry.

Personal Customer Service

We believe in providing exceptional customer service and we hope that your time on our site is always a first class experience. Our support work is never outsourced to other countries. We also only hire experienced reps who help us respond faster than most insurance companies.

If cheap car insurance is what you need, then you ve come to the right place.

The Cheap Car Insurance Commitment

We stand behind our commitment to do our best to get you the lowest auto insurance quotes online. Now it’s easier than ever to search and shop for cheap auto insurance quotes.

Furthermore, we know our customers want the right amount of coverage to help keep their family safe on the road. That’s why we emphasize on red tape removal and streamline processes to help find cheap full coverage car insurance rates and the cheapest insurance companies for our customers.

One Good Reason to Shop With Us

“After being with my insurance company for just shy of 10 years, and after having shopped at companies that everyone around my hometown swore were the cheapest (including unadvertised “bargain” companies and giant comparison shopping brands), I decided to shop here at CheapCarInsurance and ended up saving just under $1,100 off my annual insurance bill, which is a lot more than I ever could have imagined anyone saving, especially me, an avid online shopper and extreme bargain hunter [. ]

This is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that: 1st, I had regularly asked my former insurance company for reviews and discounts; 2nd, I recently got a speeding ticket in a school zone (which I am a bit ashamed to say) just before I switched; and 3rd, that $1,100 savings was before I got an additional discount for bundling my home insurance on my policy (which is a lot lower now too).

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, 10 years of loyalty did not pay off for me, and was replaced by a 5 minute quote that will save me thousands down the road. In short, our family owns 3 cars, and my new rates are about half my old rates; so not bad for the little additional time it took to compare quotes and digitally sign a policy.

Obviously, not everyone will save nearly as much as I did, but it’s well worth your 5 minutes to find out, even if you end up only saving a few hundred dollars per year, potentially adding up to thousands over a couple years.”

Whether you need a free car insurance quote or are just shopping around, by filling out our easy-to-use form, we’ll find the best and cheapest full coverage car insurance options tailored to your insurance needs. At Cheap Car Insurance, we are the simplest and safest way to save money on your car insurance!

Health Costs How Much Does Hospice Care Cost?

How Much Does Hospice Care Cost?

Hospice care is a special type of health care that is focused on caring for individuals who are terminally ill. The main goal of hospice is to keep the patient as comfortable as possible until the end of their life. This hospice care is given 24 hours a day, with constant supervision of the patient and their needs. Since all hospice care is going to vary, it will come down to the type of care, the medication needed, the diagnosis of the person, geographical location and hospice center taking care of the patient.

How much does it cost?

  • Depending on the type of care that is necessary, the costs of hospice care can widely vary anywhere from $140 to as much as $1,000 per day. A patient that requires little to no supervision and medication can be near the $140 a day mark, while a patient that requires constant attention, medication and equipment maintenance can be close to that $1,000 a day mark. Most hospice care is going to be between the $140 and $300 per day mark.
  • Cancer.about.com states there are different coverage payments for the potential costs of hospice care, and this includes private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.
  • For those patients who opt to take Medicare as their choice of payments for their hospice care, most of your hospice care can be covered. To learn about what Medicare is going to cover, Caringinfo.org has answers.

What is going to be included?

  • Most hospice care services will include registered nurses, hospice aides and social workers on site. Hospice will also include short-term care, on-call medical services, counseling, medical equipment and supplies, prescriptions, therapy and all treatments necessary to ensure that the patient is living as comfortable and healthy a life as possible.
  • Hospice care comes in two main forms. You can either hire a hospice service that will send a nurse to your home on a daily basis, or you can put your loved one in a hospice care facility.
  • Hospice care is a treatment system that works with the overall well-being and health of the person or patient. For many people who suffer from diseases and ailments, you have to think of the welfare of the person being cared for. Hospice care will include the social, spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being of the patient. This type of care is available for anyone who needs it. Basic planning of the needs of the patient will have to be assessed to make sure that the patient will have the comfort and care that he or she needs.
  • While hospice care is an excellent option for the patient, it is also very helpful to the family. If you have a loved one that you are no longer able to care for, hospice might be a great option for both of you.

What are the extra costs?

  • If you are hiring a hospice care nurse to stay at your home, you may need to spend some extra money for their food and board. Some providers may require their meals to be housed by the patient’s family.
  • Medications are not generally included in the package for hospice care, and you may need to spend for these medicines.
  • Aside from medication, additional services such as equipment and miscellaneous services may be an additional cost to consider.
  • Outside care from physicians and other medical professionals will be an additional cost.
  • Emergency room visits and ambulance rides are something to consider as well.

Factors that influence the price:

  • Your location is perhaps the biggest factor that affects the pricing of the hospice care. If you are in a city where the costs of living are huge, then you may have to spend higher for the hospice care costs as these are basically proportioned to the economy of the city in which you live.
  • The extent of the care the patient needs is another element that would affect the pricing of the hospice care cost.
  • The condition from which the patient is suffering would be a major aspect that would increase the costs of the hospice care.

Tips to know:

  • It is crucial that you ask around your area for the potential providers for hospice care. There are plenty out there, and you need to make sure you get the best. Do not settle for mediocre providers just because they are cheap. It is always best to consult with at least three at a minimum to make sure that they can provide the patient what they need.
  • Social workers and care managers in the local hospital would have an idea of who are the best providers on the market if you are unsure where to begin.
  • Medicare will not pay past six months of hospice care unless there is a physician visit that deems the condition terminal.

Questions to ask a hospice:

  • Are you recognized by a national accepting body?
  • Are you Medicare certified?
  • Are you licensed by the state? What about the workers?
  • Can you provide references?
  • What are your policies?
  • How much responsibility is given to the average caregiver?

How can I save money?

  • If you really want to save on the funds or budget that you need to spend for the hospice care, then you may have to consider home care from hospital care. This is the best way for your to find an affordable provider who will help care for the well-being of your family member or even for yourself. SEE: How much does home care cost?
  • If you are having a hard time footing the bill because Medicare does not cover all of the necessary expenses, there are many financial programs and grants available for those who qualify.

What does Hospice cost?

Center for Hospice Care can provide services to those who meet the qualifications regardless of financial status. We do not turn anyone away because they cannot pay. If you are worried about the cost of caring for a terminally ill person, or worried about your family s finances when you are terminally ill, please do get in touch with us. We can discuss your options and hopefully ease your concerns.

Hospice care is widely covered by private insurance plans, although your provider is the best person to talk to when it comes to details about what is and is not covered by your plan.

Medicare and Medicaid

Patients who are eligible for Medicare/Medicaid Hospice Benefit will be able to get most hospice costs covered. That includes both clinical services such as pain relief, and support services. Some services may also be available to caregivers and loved ones at no extra cost. Usually, families of Medicare/Medicaid patients will have to pay very little for services related to the terminal illness.

Those who are not covered by Medicare or any other insurance will still be provided with hospice care. We will not refuse assistance because of an inability to pay. In some circumstances we can also help find out if terminally ill patients are eligible for special coverage that they may not currently be accessing.

Through the support offered by the community of Eastern Connecticut in the form of volunteer time and philanthropic donations, we can help make sure no terminally ill person goes without hospice care because of the cost.

Getting A Patent In China. The China Patent Shuffle.

Kelly Spors, the Wall Street Journal s spot on Q A columnist on entrepreneurship and small business answered a question today on securing a China patent.

The question asked of Ms. Spors by a U.S. patent holder is whether it is worth spending the money for a patent in China to prevent knockoffs from being made there?

Ms. Spors says probably yes.

She starts out by noting that given China s reputation for meagerly enforcing intellectual property rights, getting a patent there may seem like a pointless expense. But you may kick yourself later on if you don t.

She then rightfully notes that in spite of the problems companies have in enforcing their patents in China, they are sometimes critical to prevent others from patenting YOUR product:

The big risk: If another company patents your idea first, it can turn around and sue you for infringement. It isn t as much about getting a patent in China as preventing other people from getting one, says Siva Yam, president of the U.S.-China Chamber of Commerce, a Chicago-based organization that helps businesses navigate China. Mr. Yam says the Chinese government is trying to better enforce patents, so having a Chinese patent may be worth more in the future.

Mr. Yam recalls a few years back when a Pennsylvania company decided not to seek a patent in China since it was already selling the technology there. But a Chinese company later sought and received a patent on a similar technology and then sued the U.S. company, along with writing letters to its customers threatening to sue if they continued doing business with the firm. The Chinese company eventually backed down, but not before the U.S. company had spent ample time and money fending off the claims.

She says it also makes sense to get a Chinese patent if you are selling your product into the Chinese market and that a patent will allow you to fight back if the manufacturer starts selling knockoffs of your product. She then notes that if you are going to seek a China patent of that which you have already patented in the United States, you must do so within a year of filing your U.S. patent application, unless you get an extension by filing an international patent application.

She is absolutely right about this. The China lawyers at my firm have received countless phone calls from companies agonizing over whether or not to get a China patent until we end that particular agony by telling them that they are too late.

I am probably a bit less upbeat than Ms. Spoor on the benefits of securing a China patent because they do tend to be difficult to enforce in China. One of the Chinese lawyers with whom we regularly work is even of the view that getting a strong trademark and constantly updating your product militate against the need to get a patent most of the time. But this ignores the problem of someone else stepping in and registering your patent in China. Though we are constantly seeing instances where Chinese companies swoop in and register someone s US trademark in China, it is less common with patents and I think this is because it is generally considerably more complicated and expensive to register a patent than it is to register a trademark.

Bottom Line: f you are doing business in China or even just considering doing so, you should be looking now at what you can do to protect your IP (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, etc.) in China.

The term PBX, for private branch exchange, is in most cases simply a synonym for business phone system.

Internet Protocol PBXes, or IP PBXes, are phone systems that connect calls via the internet rather than the traditional phone network.

We ll explain the core features and benefits of IP PBX systems. We ll also take a look at some of the key factors that businesses need to consider when investing in a new phone system.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • What Is a PBX and an IP PBX?
  • IP PBX
  • Which Businesses Need Them?
  • Key Considerations

What Is a PBX and an IP PBX?

The term PBX itself is a relic from the early-20th Century, as we explain in our extended definition.

Pbx system cost

Broadly speaking, a PBX s function is to unite all the separate phone extensions that a business uses so they can function together as one system. Specifically, PBXs:

  1. Route incoming calls to whichever extension a caller chooses.
  2. Distribute calls automatically to internal extensions based on pre-set rules.
  3. Connect internal extensions to outside lines when employees place a call.
  4. Connect calls internally between the business s extensions.

PBXs have been performing these same tasks for decades. As the internet increasingly takes over the function of the traditional phone network, however, the capabilities and features of PBXs have also evolved.

IP PBX

VoIP, or the Voice over Internet Protocol, has brought many changes to all aspects of business telephony PBXs included. With VoIP, it s now possible to send calls over an internet connection, as opposed to paying for traditional business phone service.

In order to reap the benefits of VoIP, you need an IP PBX rather than a traditional PBX, as an IP PBX system can connect directly to the internet. Older PBX systems, on the other hand, connect to analog or digital phone lines.

There are devices known as gateways that allow you to use VoIP service with an older PBX system. If you re replacing your system, however, it makes much more sense to simply invest in an IP PBX.

IP PBXs exist in several very different forms. Although they all perform similar functions, there is no strict definition of the term. An IP PBX can refer to:

Which Businesses Need Them?

Traditionally, PBXs were very expensive to purchase and maintain, and they were only used by relatively large businesses. Smaller businesses had alternatives such as Key Systems, which are scaled-down and less automated, but perform similar functions. (With Key Systems, users manually select lines: for example, by pressing “9” for an outside line.)

Now it s common for businesses with even a few employees to use some sort of IP PBX for their office phone system.

IP PBXs allow incoming calls to be routed and automatically distributed, and allow internal extensions to dial each other and share external lines. They provide the same basic functions as traditional PBXs, and can be useful to businesses of almost any size.

Further, as more businesses seek out the conveniences and cost-savings of VoIP telephony, IP PBXs in one of the forms mentioned above have become an increasingly common choice. Rather than trying to modernize an older PBX so it can work with VoIP calls, it often makes more sense to upgrade the whole system. Upgrading also gives buyers a chance to bring in new features which may have previously been unavailable.

Key Considerations

Hosted or on-premise. This is probably the most critical decision to make. Companies should look at both options. On-premise systems will typically have higher initial costs, and may also require periodic system maintenance. Hosted PBXs will cost less up front, and will be managed by the provider, but have higher recurring costs. The total cost of ownership for all potential systems should be compared.

Call capacity. PBXs can only handle a limited number of concurrent calls and a limited number of total extensions or registrations. (Each VoIP phone connected to the IP PBX requires a single registration.) Assess how many total connections you ll need, count one for each hardphone and softphone you plan to connect, as well as any devices such as FAX machines that may also be connected via your existing phone service provider, and estimate how many calls your employees will be making and receiving simultaneously when you re at peak call volume.

Unified communications. This term refers to a range of features that involve communicating across platforms and between different mediums. A common example of this is visual voicemail: a feature that automatically transcribes voicemail messages and emails the transcript to the recipient. Many IP PBXs have UC functions included.

Security. VoIP calls have special network requirements and they often don t work with well with standard office firewalls. To avoid problems, ensure that your existing firewall is compatible with SIP and VoIP traffic. An alternative is to get an IP PBX that includes a built-in firewall, as many do. Many also include VPN gateways to connect with a corporate Virtual Private Network.

Finally, you can use a device known as a Session Border Controller (SBC), which provides additional security specifically for VoIP systems by policing the pinholes that you need to open in your firewall for your VoIP calls.

Auto attendant. This is the automated answering system that greets inbound calls, presents pre-recorded information and gives callers a list of extension options from which to choose. Most IP PBXs include auto attendants, but the level of functionality supported by different systems differs. Advanced IVR systems, the voice menus that allow callers to complete actions such as checking account balances over the phone, are generally only found in call center suites.

When a roof begins to leak, it may need to be replaced. However, on an otherwise sturdy roof, a repair of a small area may be all that is needed.

  • Repairing a 10×10-foot square of asphalt shingles, considered one square of roofing, runs $100-$350 using a roofing company. Repairing a few missing or broken asphalt shingles through a handyman service runs $95-$127.
  • Reparing wooden shingles using a roofing company for a 10×10-foot square costs $210-$1,000. Repairing a couple of broken or missing shingles using a handyman can run $135-$175.

  • Roof repair jobs should include the installation of new shingles, sealing with a roof cement product and cleanup of any old shingles and debris.

Additional costs:

  • When the vinyl or metal flashing that seals the edge of a skylight to the roofing material tears or is pulled away from the skylight, a leak will appear and costs $300-$500 to repair.
  • Valley roof flashing, which is used anywhere on a roof where slopes create a valley where water drains off, runs $15-$25 per linear foot to repair.
  • Faulty flashing around a chimney is priced $200-$500.

Discounts:

  • Some roof repair companies offer senior citizen discounts of 10-30%.

How Much Does Rehab Cost

How Much Does Rehab Cost?

As you’ve probably guessed, the answer is complicated. Rehab costs are determined by location, types of programs offered, amenities and more. But don’t be lulled into paying too much for drug rehab because you think you need to have 5 star hotel quality accommodations.Just because the treatment center is on the beach in Malibu – doesn’t mean you’re getting the best care. You need to pay for the best treatment, not the best view. Just like you would want to pick the best doctors to treat your cancer, you need to apply the same to drug rehab. In addition, many rehabs use the 30 day treatment model that often comes with lower success rates. Lower success rates mean patients relapse and have a need to return to treatment – which now raises the overall cost significantly. Monthly rehab costs can range from 15k a month to 45k depending on the location, types of treatments are offered, and more. If we drop the monthly cost to 10k, assume that the patient will experience relapse after participating in a 30 day program and need to repeat treatment at least 5x, the total cost is $50,000.

The good news is, recovery treatment for drug and alcohol addiction doesn’t have to be that costly and there are treatments that have a higher success rate, which means relapse may not happen.

At Addiction Campuses we offer proven longer treatment cycles that significantly lower relapse, bringing the overall cost of treatment down. Additionally, our treatment plans are specifically tailored to the individual in need which makes our monthly tuition rates some of the most affordable out there.

Kinds Of Addiction Treatment Plans

Studies have shown that merely attending a 30 day rehab program is not enough to treat addiction for the long term. It’s important that you understand what types of addiction treatment programs are out there so that you can be sure you’re going to the right one. It is imperative that you attend a program that utilizes all four levels of treatment. While you may not need to be admitted into the more intensive parts of treatment, a center that offers a comprehensive program is one that shows a commitment to your health and well-being and a dedication to your positive outcome.

Levels Of Treatment Include:

  • Medical Detoxification
Medical Detox is the first step in the recovery process during which the body is cleansed of the toxins leftover by drug abuse. The product of a successful medical detox is that the person, in a more comfortable way, no longer has any medical risks caused by no longer taking the drug or drinking alcohol. This patient is ready to move on to residential treatment.
  • Residential / Inpatient Treatment
Individuals on the path to recovery must be given the appropriate time, space, and tools needed to focus on themselves and their health. Inpatient care is a highly effective form of addiction treatment because it offers clients a safe, structured, and sober environment, away from everyday distractions and temptations.
  • Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient care is an extension of an already successful inpatient treatment program. Patients return to their own environments after drug or alcohol treatment, and must voluntarily abstain from drug or alcohol use, which requires a greater amount of diligence and means a higher chance of relapse. Clients are provided with a strong support network of non-using peers and sponsors that provide a new, positive element of social change in an addict’s life and facilitates long-term recovery.
  • Transitional / Sober Living
After rehab care is an important part of why a patient stays off drugs and alcohol. Transitional living offers patients the chance to practice new life skills in a sober environment. They are monitored by staff and still have random drug testing. Clients also gain privileges back like cell phones, cars and are also required to have a job. This experience is vital to a patient who can experience stress, practices his/her new way of life and can be successful without returning to drugs and alcohol.

When Evaluating Treatment Providers, Look Out For:

  • Unwillingness to work with your financial situation
Beware of the admissions center who is unwilling to work with your financial situation. A good call center will always be able to point you in the right direction for treatment, no matter what your financial situation is.
  • Reasonable pricing, not just free services
Free services can mean treatment isn’t a priority. There should be a reasonable cost for an important decision like going to rehab. Don’t just go for a free service because it’s free. Go to the right program for you.
  • Work in exchange for room and board
It’s important to work. But you need to work on yourself most importantly during treatment. Be careful about programs that require you to work for the organization in exchange for room and board.
  • Certified leadership and counselors
Be sure that counselors are certified. There are centers who pass off their former patients as counselors. Find out who the leaders are at the organization. What kind of certifications or training do they have in addiction or teaching life skills?

Just Remember… 117 People Die Each Day From Drug Addiction.

You owe it to yourself or your loved one to make the call. Paying for a sound rehab treatment program is not complicated nor does it have to break the bank.

The positive results from attending a good rehab program will be worth the effort in the long run. An individual struggling with addiction cannot begin the recovery process without first obtaining the help they need to overcome addiction.

7 cars with a low total cost of ownership

Depreciation is the 800-pound gorilla of car ownership cost.

To be sure, a car s purchase price is important in determining cost of ownership because it s the base number needed to calculate a vehicle s depreciation, or loss of value. Purchase price minus sale or trade-in price, determines depreciation.

The more value your car retains over time, the lower the total cost of ownership. Other contributing factors are fuel (miles per gallon), scheduled maintenance, repairs, state fees and financing costs (interest on your car loan).

These elements vary based on individual behavior, location and other variables. But for the sake of comparison, it s possible to calculate averages to determine the five-year cost of ownership.

Bankrate turned to Kelly Blue Book (KBB) for a 20-vehicle (cars, trucks and crossovers) list of 2016 models with the lowest five-year cost of ownership. Bankrate plucked eight from those picks and here they are, beginning with the lowest cost of ownership.

Prices and descriptions are for the latest model year on sale in showrooms and don t include factory destination charge.

The Bankrate Daily

Chevrolet Spark LS

Just squeaking by the Nissan Versa S, KBB ranked the Chevrolet Spark LS as having the overall lowest five-year cost of ownership. Its cost advantage reflects low fuel and insurance costs, with the lowest insurance costs among these picks. Weighing it down is its relatively high depreciation.

The LS comes with a 98-horsepower, 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. To gain power windows, locks and outboard mirrors requires stepping up to the 1LT trim.

However, the LS has as standard equipment 10 air bags, rearview camera, air conditioning, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a four-speaker audio system, 7-inch touchscreen, MyLink infotainment interface, USB port, OnStar telematics and Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

Suffering from the highest fuel cost and one of the higher insurance costs among the cars on this list, the Nissan Versa S still managed to rank second behind Spark, thanks primarily to its low rate of depreciation. This rating is for the sedan version only.

KBB broke out the Versa Note hatchback as a separate model, which didn t fare as well as the sedan.

As you might expect, as a sub-$12,000 car, the Versa S is short on frills. Power comes from a 109-horsepower, 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission ushers power to the front wheels.

Creature comforts are limited to six air bags, air conditioning, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a four-speaker audio system with auxiliary input jack and power outboard mirrors.

Only a significantly higher depreciation cost put the Honda Fit behind the Nissan Versa. Fit beat Versa handily in fuel and maintenance costs. Its insurance and repair costs are middle of the pack. Extremely roomy for a subcompact, Fit provides more cargo room than its exterior size promises.

With a higher purchase price than Spark or Versa, Fit LX offers more standard convenience features than the top two cars. Thrust comes from a 130-horsepower, 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine via a six-speed manual transmission.

Hill-start assist is standard. Other equipment included in the LX grade: multi-angle rearview camera, cruise control, auto on/off headlights, power outboard mirrors, windows and locks, air conditioning, 5-inch color screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-speaker audio system with USB port.

For the sake of this exercise, you could easily replace the Kia Rio LX with the Hyundai Accent SE. They share most mechanical components and vary little in terms of ownership costs. In fact, when all five-year cost-to-own factors are compared, the final numbers are a photo finish with Accent winning by less than $100. Both these Korean cars stake out costs near mid pack.

Not as well stocked with goodies as others on this list, Rio derives its go from a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission turns the front wheels.

Included in the standard equipment are hill-start assist, air conditioning, auto on/off headlights, six air bags and a four-speaker audio system with USB interface.

Although ranked 12th on KBB s list, Bankrate included Honda Civic LX because, in addition to a low cost of ownership, it s a terrific all-around car. Among the more fuel efficient, Civic s maintenance costs are lower than all but the other Honda on this list. A low rate of depreciation, though, landed it among these picks despite a relatively higher purchase price.

A 158-horsepower, 2-liter, four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission turns the front wheels. A long list of standard features include a multi-angle rearview camera, automatic climate control, capless fuel filler, power windows, door locks and outboard mirrors, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-speaker audio system with USB interface.

Toyota Tacoma SR Double Cab

Who would have thought a pickup truck even a midsize one would wind up on a low-cost-to-own list? Actually, the Nissan Frontier King Cab S is six spots farther down the list.

Here s how a couple of trucks made the cut: an extremely low rate of depreciation. Although the Nissan Versa s purchase price is about half that of Toyota Tacoma SR. its $8,628 depreciation cost is more than Tacoma s $8,199.

A 159-horsepower, 2.7-liter, four-cylinder engine sends output to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. Air conditioning, eight air bags, hill-start assist, rearview camera, and power windows and door locks are standard, as is an integrated GoPro windshield mount.

Entertainment is from an Entune system with 6.1-inch touchscreen, six speakers, Bluetooth connectivity and USB interface.

Jeep Patriot Sport

Okay, Bankrate included the Patriot to have a crossover on the list. However, its total cost of ownership isn t much more than the Honda Civic or the Toyota Tacoma. Although its depreciation rate is trends to the high end, its maintenance and repair costs are mid pack. Only Toyota Tacoma has a higher fuel cost.

Jeep promotes Patriot as the most affordable sport-utility vehicle. However, to get there, the Patriot Sport is devoid of most creature comforts.

Air conditioning is optional. The engine is a 158-horsepower, 2-liter, four-cylinder that uses a five-speed manual transmission to turn the front wheels. Among the standard equipment in the Jeep Patriot Sport. six air bags, Uconnect voice command interface with Bluetooth connectivity and a four-speaker audio system with an auxiliary input jack.

The Real Cost of a DUI in California

Most of us are well aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. The exponentially increased risk of hurting yourself and others in an accident should be more than enough to deter everyone from driving under the influence (DUI). Still, just to make the case against drinking and driving even stronger we can take a look at the outrageous cost you will meet if you are convicted of a DUI. From having your car impounded when you get caught to license reinstatement fees after your driver’s license gets suspended, several factors go into the true cost of a DUI.

Car Insurance Increase

It’s not exactly a secret that car insurance premiums increase after a DUI, but many people might not realize that this increase is the highest DUI-related cost. This may be because people think of the increase in the short term, since insurance coverage is usually only bought months at a time. However, there is more to the short term when it comes to a DUI-related car insurance increase. To reinstate your driver’s license after it has been suspended due to a DUI in California, you must file a proof of financial responsibility with the court known as a SR-22. After a DUI you will be required to file your SR-22 for at least 3 years. Your insurance company will take care of this for you, but it will come with a hefty increase in your premium. After you are no longer required to file a SR-22, your car insurance premium may lower a bit, but will likely remain well above standard car insurance rates. These several years of increased rates will quickly add up and when all is said and done you may end up paying up to approximately $40,000 in insurance rate increases over the years.

Towing and Storage

When a police officer catches you drinking and driving, you will be arrested, and your car will be impounded. The costs of towing and storage can reach about $685 and can even get higher the longer you keep your car in storage.

DUI Classes

After a DUI conviction, you will be required to enroll in and complete a DUI course. The length of time you will have to attend a course will depend on the severity of your DUI violation, but you can expect to pay at least $650 for the course.

Fines and Attorney Fees

If you are caught drinking and driving you will have to go to court.

A Note about Lawyers

It is rarely a good idea to go to court without legal representation. This is especially true for such a serious case as driving under the influence. Even if you know for certain that you are guilty, you should have an attorney who can help protect you from excessive penalties. There are several DUI attorneys who can help you with your case. If the court does find you guilty of a DUI you can expect to pay hefty fines. With these fines and the addition of attorney fees you are looking to pay around $4,000 after your court conviction.

Driver’s License Reinstatement

When you are caught driving over the legal limit your driver’s license will be suspended. Once the duration of your suspension has ended, and you have fulfilled any other requirements to be eligible to get your license back, you will have to pay a license reinstatement fee. This fee will be at least $100. Need to learn more about reinstating your license? Visit our Suspended License in California page.

The True Cost of a DUI

Added together all of these DUI-related costs mean you should be ready to pay an estimated $45,435 for a DUI. Keep in mind that this is an estimated minimum for a first-time offense. There is a very good chance you could end up paying more and the number will just keep increasing after each violation. So it is easy to see that getting behind the wheel after drinking is just not worth it. A cab ride is going to cost nowhere near $45,000. Save some money and some lives, don’t drink and drive.

Life Insurance Cost

When purchasing life insurance, you first need to determine what kind of insurance you will buy (term life or cash value) and the amount of coverage you need. Term life – which has a certain coverage for a defined term of time without any “cash value” that builds up over time – is the most straightforward kind and is generally substantially less expensive.
If you choose a cash value life insurance policy, it’s especially important to choose a carrier that is financially sound and stable. If you use an insurance aggregator such as Intelliquote, they will display the Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s, and other ratings.
The California Department of Insurance has a helpful Consumer’s Guide to life insurance.

  • Using Intelliquote, we tested several different scenarios for a fit male in California who has never smoked and is seeking a 20 Year, $500,000 term life insurance policy. For a 30 year old, the monthly premium would be $24-$31 a month, for a 40 year old, the monthly premium would be $31-$40 a month, and for a 50 year old, the monthly premium would be $83-$92 a month.
  • Using Intelliquote, we tested several different scenarios for an obese male in Illinois who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and is seeking a 20 year, $500,000 term life insurance policy. For a 30 year old, the monthly premium would be $95-$177 a month, for a 40 year old, the monthly premium would be $195-$243 a month, and for a 50 year old, the monthly premium would be $471-$541 a month.

Shopping for life insurance:

  • Nation-wide online life insurance aggregators include IntelliQuote [1 ] and ReliaQuote [2 ]. which will provide a quick overview of possible rates.
  • Once you’ve gotten ballpark estimates of what kind of policy you want and what kind of companies you’re interested in, you may want to talk to a life insurance agent to pick a specific policy. Be aware, though, that insurance agents can have financial incentives to encourage to you to pick particular plans.

My dad is now 84 years old. I took over paying their bills 1- years ago and became aware that he was paying (through draft) $68.78 monthly for a term life? policy worth only $19,000.
This doesn’t seem possible. I contacted a Metlife rep several years ago and didn’t get anywhere with him.
My dad was a young man workin for the Middle GA Electrical Membership Corporation. They cut back right-of-way, put up lines, when your lights go out due to a storm, they are the guy who go out in the weather and get things back up and running. But, $68.78 for just $19,000.
He has been disabled since early 70 and has been paying this premium all these years AND many year sprior to that as far as i know.
My mom had an 8th grade education and my dad only a 7th. This seems criminal to me that this has gone on all these years. They didn’t know any better. When I realized this at first, he had already paid in almost as much as it was worth adn I felt we had too much invested to just drop it. He is a veteran released on an honorable discharge, so it is possible he didn’t need this, but who knows at this point.
Can you give me an direction? I had not thougth about talkign to the insurance commissioner or an attorney, but I may.

How Much Does It Cost To Drill A Water Well? The Housing

How Much Does It Cost To Drill A Water Well?

There are numerous reasons why someone may want to drill water wells on their property. The person may want a well to supplement or replace the supply of municipal water. Or perhaps drilling a well is the only way to obtain water on the property. No matter what the reasons are, the person will certainly need to know how much it costs to drill water wells prior to beginning the project.

There are several cost factors to take into consideration. For instance, licenses and special permits may have to be obtained. Equipment or tools may have to be purchased or rented. Most likely, it will be necessary to either hire professional well drillers or at least hire some general laborers to help with the drilling. Then there is the cost of the materials and water tests to consider. Prices for permits, licenses, labor, water testing, and materials differ from one location to the next. The quality of the material and water may also affect the total cost. And the size and type of water system added to the water well will definitely affect the total cost.

Most licensed drillers charge per depth/diameter foot and include the permits and basic materials, such as the well casing, in the estimated cost. The average residential water well ranges between 30-200 feet deep. For residential water wells in the United States, the price ranges from $15-$100 per foot, with a total price range from $3,000-to over $50,000. However, the rest of the water system, such as the electric connections, pump, pipes leading to the home, and storage system are typically not included in the estimate. So it may be necessary to add an additional $800-$2,000 to the amount to the contractor’s quotes or ask that the cost of the complete water system be included. Even the drilling company cannot give an exact price until after the well has been drilled and the water has been tested.

Estimating Total Price

Although the total cost will vary from project to project, there are ways to get an estimated total price. The easiest and best way is to get a few licensed well drillers to provide you with an estimated cost for your specific location and choice of water system. Since they drill wells as a profession, they are also the most qualified people to obtain advice from if you are planning on drilling your own water well.

Most professionals do not mind answering a few questions as to what type of material is suitable to your terrain and environment, as well as what the most recent prices are for labor and materials. They would also most likely have up-to-date information regarding what permits or licenses are required for the location, and the costs of those permits/licenses. Usually, there is no legal obligation to hire a company once you have obtained a consultation, and most companies will provide free estimates. However, some states legally require that a licensed driller be utilized. This is due to the major impact an improperly constructed well can have on the environment. So having several professional contractors give you a quote may save you time in the long run.

The hardest way is to figure out the total cost on your own. This is because you have to have a good idea of how many feet into the ground the well will reach. You will also need to know which permits or licenses are required. And you will have to research which types of materials and drilling is most suitable for the location of the well. You will also need to know the quality of the water in order to properly plan which additional water system to utilize.

It is highly suggested that you read the contract over carefully when hiring a professional drilling company. They are not legally bound to hit water when drilling a well, since no one can guarantee there is an accessible supply of water under your property. You may want to ensure there is a clause for possibly drilling a second well if the first one does not work out. You may also want to ensure it is clear who will obtain and pay for any required permits. Additionally, it is a good idea to clarify who will purchase and install the remainder of the water system. And you should also make sure it is clear who will clean up the mess on the property after the well is finished. Moreover, it is best to ensure the contractor has proper liability insurance to cover any injuries and property damage that may occur during the project.

The 8s are slightly further up the food chain than the 6s, but there are good and bad examples of both. Tripadvisor is your friend. Impossible to generalize about rates however as each hotel’s location will drive cost, as will demand on the night(s) you stay.

Others to consider that are in the same bracket would be Red Roof Inn, Econolodge and there are probably others. Consistency of quality control is very poor in these chains so your experiences will vary a lot from one to another.

At the rest stops, there are usually motel books with coupons. Sometimes you can get some Hampton or Fairields for 59 bucks plus tax. Nice hot tubs and breakfast.

If you are planning on doing some sight seeing and can plan, try Priceline and or Hotwire. I booked the Doubletree Hotel in PA in July for $65 a night and the Westin in Arlington for 113. You can usually get Holiday Inn for 50 bucks (start at 35 in remote places). But you must plan and you must arrive on a certain date. If you bring a laptop, you can stop by wireless gas stations or rest stops and try to book ahead of yourself. These hotels are MUCH nicer than the Motel 8, but require some planning.

Another cheapo way to go is to use the KOA cabins. It all depends on how much you want to see and do on your trip. Might as well see some stuff. The National Parks in Southern Utah, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Rushmore, Crazy Horse are all pretty cool.

How much is car insurance per month?

Car insurance rates are based on your unique profile and the car insurance premiums will vary from one car insurance company to another but for most drivers it s common to find similar policy quotes within 20% of each other.

Why do Car Insurance Rates Vary by Provider?

In a nutshell, all car insurance companies are private enterprises who run a business model on profit. The amount of profit they expect to make and the amount of risk they are willing to take on is unique to each company so you will find different formulas for calculating your auto insurance premiums depending on who your speak with.

Although the calculation of premiums will vary most car insurance companies all use the same components in the risk formula which include the type of vehicle insured, your driving record, where you live, your credit score and many other factors.

The best way to understand how much your car insurance per month will be to compare car insurance quotes from multiple providers and find an industry range. Once you know the range of premiums expected to pay then its all about finding the right car insurance company based on intangible factors such as customer service and claims handling which fits your unique needs.

25 Free Low Cost Advertising Tips

by Tom Egelhoff

(Tom’s FREE Podcast for this topic is available. – For More Info Click Here)

If there is one mistake small town businesses make more often than any other it’s, What ever is left over, we’ll use for advertising.

Marketing and advertising is an investment, not an expense.

I know it sure seems like an expense to me when I’m writing the check, but trust me it’s not.

Without enough money put aside for advertising your sales can go down and you suddenly have less and less for promotion.

When do you advertise the most? For most businesses it’s the first day of business.

Don’t you have a Grand Opening, balloons, flyers, ads, on-site radio stations, contests, and prizes?

Did the income from sales pay for that? No, it didn’t. You advertise most when you need business. You advertise more when you don’t.

An average cost of advertising is usually 1 to 5% of gross sales, which can vary according to location, local advertising rates, and industry. Car dealers need more advertising than funeral homes.

Before we get to the 25 tips let’s look at the basic strategies of successful advertising.

* In order to be successful, your advertising must provide a consumer benefit or solve a problem.
* That benefit or solution must be wanted by the consumer.
* The product or service you are offering must be tied directly to that benefit or solution.
* The benefit or solution must be distinctly communicated through medial advertising. In other words, be clear, forget the advertising glitz and make sure the message isn’t lost in the ad.

A small-budget advertiser doesn’t have the ”deep pockets to develop big advertising campaigns. Some time you need to break the rules to be noticed.

Avis did it by admitting they were Number 2 in the car rental business and that campaign took them from 6th place to second place.

When they stopped that campaign they dropped back to 6th again. In the past year they have gone back to it.

Budget conscious advertisers must achieve top results for their advertising dollar. Expand your dollars by adopting some creative techniques.

Here’s 25 tips I hope will help you.

  1. Radio, newspapers and magazine specialists will frequently give free help in developing an advertising strategy. Things like demographic information, money-saving ways to produce your ads etc.
  • Place your ads in off hours or in unusual locations for less. Many times you can still reach your target market with these spots.
  • Instead of a one-time big splash ad, be consistent with frequent small ads that work.
  • Monthly magazines sometimes have unsold ad space at the end of the month they will sell at a discount.
  • If you have an 800 number, put it in every ad for immediate response and feedback.
  • Try advertising consistently in the classifieds. These ads may draw more customers than more expensive display ads.
  • Can you barter for the cost of ad production? Maybe the newspaper needs painting in exchange for an ad about your paint store.
  • Piggyback advertising are the ads you receive with your Mastercard bill. Is there someone in your town that sends out a lot of bills? Can you put a small flyer in with their bills and split the postage? Or pay a small fee?
  • Split advertising costs with the people who sell to you. Vendors and manufactures are always looking for exposure. Let people know you carry their products and have the vendor pick up part of the ad cost.
  • Are there up front advertising discounts for cash?
  • Consider advertising in regional issues of national magazines. The costs are lower and you can still reach your target market. TV Guide is a good choice. It stays around for at least a week. Time, Newsweek, and US News and World Report may stay in local doctors offices for years.
  • Share ad costs with neighbor business. Video stores and Pizza parlors are natural partners. Have coupons to each others stores or share the cost of flyers.
  • Try reducing the size of your ad (not in the Yellow Pages) or length of your radio spots. A 60 second spot is not twice as much as a 30 second spot but you won’t get twice as many customers for a 60 over a 30. Going with small ads or shorter spots will allow you to do more ads which normally pulls more customers. It’s better to be there every day with small ads than every month with one big one.
  • Develop tight production controls to minimize the need to reject finished ads. The message is more important than the messenger. Don’t try to produce ads that win awards, produce ads that sell.
  • Who are your very best customers? Aim your ads to talk directly to people like them.
  • What will suppliers give you in the way of point-of-purchase materials. Posters, stand ups, handouts, etc. Some have excellent display racks you can use.
  • Some national chains like Coke and Pepsi provide outdoor signs for businesses. There are also indoor lighted signs you write on with special markers to advertise your special offers.
  • Can you sponsor a community event? A fun-run, golf tournament, or other event that will be well publicized in the community. Your name may not be prominently displayed but sometimes the positive exposure in the community will bring in new customers.
  • Small businesses can seldom afford saturation advertising. You must be selective in the media that reaches your customers. Pin your ad reps down and make them show you exactly how their media reaches your target audience.
  • Exploit the media you choose to the fullest. If your message is verbal, you don’t need TV. Use radio, billboards and newspapers to the fullest.
  • Consider direct mail. A letter and brochure before customer contact can increase business. An IBM study concluded that selling time can be reduced from 9.3 to 1.3 total hours with direct mail advertising. A Sales and Marketing Executives International Study showed salespeople went from eight orders per 100 cold calls to 38 orders per 100 when direct mail was used.
  • Try an editorial style ad. These are ads that look like actual stories in the newspaper. They will have advertisement at the top of the article. Develop a good headline, and 50% more people will read the article than would read an ad of the same size.
  • You can’t match larger competitors dollar-for-dollar but, you can use unusual approaches (like the Avis idea above), color, music, slogans, humor (be careful here), or media selection to win your market away from the big guys.
  • Due to the high costs of conventional advertising on, radio, TV, newspapers, many cost conscious business have been forced to look for lower cost methods. Can you advertise on parking meters, taxi boards, balloons, blimps, and grocery shopping carts. Community bulletin boards, movie ads, and weekly newspaper shoppers.
  • Key your ads. Put something in the ad that will let you know which media it came from. On coupons, put a code that will record the paper and date of the ad. In radio or TV, have them mention the ad to get the discount. Ask every customer how they found you.
  • Plan for a rainy day. During the year put a small amount aside each month for emergencies. You never know when you’ll need to react quickly to whatever the competition is doing. You must be able to capitalize on breaking national events or news regarding your industry. If negative things happen in your industry you may need to respond quickly to make sure the right message is presented.
  • Always give the customer more than you promised and more than they expected. This is tip number 27 of the 25 we advertised. Maybe this last one is the one you needed.
  • I hope these tips will help your business grow. Not all may be relevant to your particular situation. Hopefully, they will illustrate the importance to plan and control your advertising budget.

    Pier and Beam Foundation Repair

Fortunately, pier and beam foundation repair is typically pretty easy, fast and affordable. This doesn t mean that it s a good DIY project for most homeowners, however. To ensure a long-lasting solution, you have to have some experience, plus you need specialized equipment to get the job done right.

Even though it might be tempting to attempt a DIY project, but let s be honest about one thing: house leveling with low-quality block piers and jacks simply doesn t provide a stable foundation for your home. The issue will reappear much more quickly than you probably think; and you ll be back at square one all over again.

Here’s an entertaining, short video of guy attempting a “quick-fix” on his house; while at the same time, cooking his dinner!

At Foundation Repair Pros. we have seen just about everything over our many years of experience. Since we are industry leading foundation repair experts here in San Antonio. we know exactly what goes into determining how and where the post and beam foundation is failing. We also know the most economical yet effective solutions to these issues.

What are the Symptoms of Pier and Beam Foundation Failure?

There are actually quite a few clues that show that your home s foundation has some issues. Your foundation is designed to fully support the entire weight of your home and to transfer and distribute that weight evenly throughout the piers, beams and bedrock or its equivalent. Here are some of the more common clues that you can look for:

-Issues with your wooden floors, such as sinking, sagging, softness or bounciness
-Floors that are starting to bow
-Gaps that can be found between the interior walls and the floor
-Cracks that can be found in the sheetrock walls in the interior of your home
-Door frames that are out of level or that won t shut or stick
-The presence of mold. fungus, termites or wood rot
-Compression of the joists in the floor
-Shimming between the beams and piers, such as if repair has already been attempted

Although it isn t necessarily a bad thing if there is the presence of shimming in your home, it does depend on the material that was used. Some shadier contractors or do-it-yourself previous homeowners use pieces of sheetrock, scrap wood, soft wood or even cardboard, but these are obviously not the appropriate materials to use when repairing the foundation of a house.

What are the Two Main Causes of Pier and Beam Structural Issues?

    1. Moisture
Since dirt crawl spaces are damp and dark, they serve as magnets for un-pleasantries like termites, mold, fungus and more. These vented crawl spaces can also become incredibly humid, especially during the summer. Plumbing leaks, leaks in your HVAC duct work and other similar issues can also cause excess moisture vapor. Once this excess moisture is present, however, it can become a breeding ground for all of these problems and more. This can dramatically weaken the piers, joists and girders.

    2. Lack of Correct Design for Pier and Beam Locations
Proper placement of the columns and is a crucial part of a pier and beam installation that is designed to last. In many homes, especially those that are older, we often see piers that are spaced way too far apart. This can cause the girders and beams to become overworked and overstressed, which can cause sags and even significant cracks. Undersized joists and girders (small width) can also cause this problem. If your home has a second story, this problem can be even more serious due to excess weight and pressure on your home.

Fixing Your Pier and Beam Foundation
We offer multiple solutions to fix your foundation-related problems. Our solutions are the most cost-effective available and are designed to stand strong through the test of time. Here are a few options that we might suggest for repairing your issues:

The correction of all water-related issues, such as drainage problems and leaks
-The installation of new piers with a concrete pad base and supports of either block or steel.
-Leveling of girders and joists with the use of heavy-duty SmartJacks
-Solving mold-related issues, then sistering fresh lumber as a means of repairing damaged joists and girders
Using either wood or steel I-beams as a means of retrofitting beams that are broken or rotten
-Using strong steel shims for re-shimming
    -Dehumidifying the crawl space area

The extent of the foundation damage to your home, the causes of your foundation-related issues and your budget will have an impact on the solution that we choose for you. We will use our expertise to choose a customized solution that is perfect for your needs. Luckily, the costs that are associated with repairing a pier and beam foundation is generally much more affordable than what homeowners with slab foundations have to pay; this is due to the fact that access to the area is easier and there is a lower cost in materials and equipment.

We offer a free inspection with absolutely no obligation. At Foundation Repair Pros. we can help you determine the sources of your issues and will provide you with the most affordable, effective and permanent fixes out there. See our cost of foundation repair page.

    How we help our clients

    Within a week, I won a contract worth £10,000!

I’ve been using Verbatim since 2001 and have been very satisfied with the results and the quality of the service. When they suggested I extend the hours to include Saturdays, I was a little skeptical but in the event I’m delighted I took their advice — within a week, I won a contract worth £10,000 and this alone has paid for the service many times over.

Glen Drew, Touchwood Flooring Services January 25, 2016

That one answered call led to initial business worth £2,000

Impressed by their professionalism and fully aware our call handling often seemed to be responding to messages or wondering about missed calls, we signed up. Soon after I was contacted by a company in Andover looking for PR support; it turned out they had turned to Google to look for local public relations services, and Morgan PR was among the top three in Basingstoke, Andover and Newbury and the company called all three. Morgan PR was the only one who answered – or rather Verbatim handled the call for us. That one answered call led to initial business worth £2,000 and a lifetime value which will far exceed that. I know that without Verbatim that business would have been unwittingly lost.

    PEX REPIPE SPECIALIST

Uponor Pex Repipe – The World’s First, Best, And Most Widely Used System For Single Family Homes And Residential Units.

    What is PEX?

PEX is an acronym for crosslinked polyethylene. It is a flexible, durable, proven piping product that has been used in plumbing systems for more than 20 years. PEX tubing won’t pit, scale or corrode and, because of its flexibility, it also offers potential freeze-damage protection.

Residential Commercial Pex Plumbing. Call Toll Free 877-473-7473

Uponor Pex plumbing systems feature PEX-a tubing, which is considered the superior PEX tubing manufacturing method in the industry. PEX-a is the most flexible of all PEX types, and because of its shape and thermal memory, it can use ProPEX expansion fittings which are the only fitting system that actually gets stronger over time – making it highly leak resistant.

    1) Repiping in a home begins at the transition point.

    2) The transition point is the point where the potable water system enters the building from the exterior of the building.

    3) Repiping a potable water system means you totally abandon the existing potable system and replace it with a new system.

    4) The first step in repiping your home is masking or “covering” the floors, and this must be completed before the walls are masked off. This overlap “ enveloped ” system allows the plastic sheeting to be rolled up in one continuous motion.

    5) Cutting the sheetrock: You will be shocked at how little sheetrock has to be removed for the layout and installation of a new potable water system. A real Pex Plumber is an expert at HVAC, framing, plumbing, and electrical layout, and will lay out the home pex repipe in the most effective route. The better the repiper. the smaller and fewer the drywall holes!

    6) A “GREEN REPIPE” potable water system refers to a Pex repipe potable system only – such as UPONOR or ZURN with corrosion resistant fittings. CPVC and copper systems are not green systems.

    7) The drywall pieces that are removed must be used in the patching process as each texture is a little different in thickness. This gives you a uniform surface thickness as you start the repair process. Each piece goes back in the hole it came from.

    8) Repipe with an approved material. There are currently three main materials used in pex repiping jobs across the US: copper pipe and fittings, CPVC pipe and fittings, and PEX repipe and fittings. (DO NOT USE CPVC, IT IS THE NEXT POLYBUTYLENE)

    9) Repipe inspections must be performed by the local building inspectors after the repipe is completed, with the system under full water pressure.

    10) The signed inspection card must be given to the homeowner after the PEX repipe inspection is completed.

    11) Drywall repair begins after all the necessary backing has been installed. Backing supports the drywall pieces that were removed to access the potable water pipes and accommodate the repiping of a new Pex repipe or copper potable water system.

    12) The fiberglass mesh tape must be used 100% of the time.

    13) The patches must be pre-filled with quick set patching compound. The compound comes in 18lb bags, and because it is a powder, it must be mixed with water. This locks the perimeter of each patch and will make the area of the patch stronger than it was before the work process began. The reason this is important is that when you close the doors in the house, the walls flex just a little bit, and if you do not perform this method of repair, the patch will fracture over time from the flex/vibration caused by shutting the doors.

    14) Do not coat the drywall patches with regular all-purpose joint compound on the repipe patches. This is a common practice and the patches will crack later 100% of the time, even if it’s years later.

    15) Coat all the repipe drywall patches with quick set patching compound only. USG will do and you can find it at any home and hardware store, or you will have fractures in the walls at the patch locations.

    16) Float all the walls with quick set patching compound and use a 12″ drywall knife and stagger each coat until the walls become smooth and flat. The next step is wet sanding the patches and this must be done if you want the patches to blend in perfectly after the texture is applied. The reason you’ve seen bad patches in the past is that repairmen do not know how to “kill the edges.” This is an old drywall term that means you must do the detail wet sanding work and there is no short cut.

    17) Texture to match the existing texture, and this is not as easy as you might think. This is a real art form for the few that know what they are doing. Also, if the texture is spray texture, you must sponge off the overspray for the texture to match. Nothing gives away the location of a patch more than overspray that is painted over and not “killing the edges.”

    18) Paint to match the existing paint. All repipe companies color match the same way. They run down to their local hardware store and have the computer color matching done by the man behind the counter. This is beginner color matching. The proper way to color match is hand color matching. First, match the paint sheen. Second, computer match for the base color. Third, tint for color adjustment. Fourth, match the color and sheen after the paint sample has dried. Repeat if necessary. Did you know that the paint color on the wall after it dries will be different than the paint color while it is wet and in the can?

    19) If you follow the basic repiping rules, after a very short time you will not be able to point out all the drywall patches from the repair. You will simply forget where the holes were due to the patches receiving the proper floating, texture and painting techniques. Your friends, neighbors, relatives, and even plumbing contractors will not be able to find the patches.

    20) This is a basic guideline for a home repipe. and if done, properly you will have a repipe that was done as well as a repipe can be done.

At Integrity Repipe. we provide total abandonment of your existing potable system, and there are never hidden extras, and we don’t hire subcontractors. You’ll receive nothing but the finest, most complete and professional job in the industry. The scope will be for a lead-free and yellow brass -free potable “GREEN SYSTEM” with a full lifetime warranty that covers material and labor.

When Can You Claim a Tax Deduction for Health Insurance? #tax, #taxes,

When Can You Claim a Tax Deduction for Health Insurance?

Each year, June 28 marks National Insurance Awareness Day, serving as a reminder that it’s a good time to review your insurance coverage and ensure that it still fits your needs.

This is particularly true for health insurance and making sure you have the right amount of coverage at an affordable cost.

Health insurance can be expensive, so being able to claim a tax deduction for some of your insurance costs can help you save come tax time.

Since there are specific rules and qualifications you must follow, here’s an overview of when you can and cannot claim a tax deduction on your health insurance.

When health insurance is not tax-deductible

If you didn’t pay for health insurance, you can’t take a tax deduction for it. If your employer pays your health insurance premiums, you can’t deduct those costs. However, if an employer only pays for part of your premiums, you still may be able to claim a tax deduction for the portion you paid.

If you received a subsidy or premium tax credit to purchase an insurance plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace through the Affordable Care Act, any advanced-payment subsidy that lowered the cost of your health insurance premiums cannot be claimed as a tax deduction. However, the money you paid out of your own pocket for your premiums might be tax deductible.

You can’t take a deduction for health insurance you paid for with pre-tax money. If you have insurance through your employer, the premiums you pay are usually taken out of your paycheck before your income taxes are calculated. Since these premiums are paid with pre-tax dollars, they’re already income-tax-free, meaning you can’t claim them as a tax deduction.

Also note, you can not deduct health insurance unless you itemize your tax deductions or you are self-employed. You don t need to know if you qualify for itemized tax deductions, TurboTax will figure it out for you.

    When health insurance is tax-deductible

If you’re self-employed, your health insurance premiums may be tax deductible. If you’re self-employed and not eligible for an employer-sponsored health plan through a spouse’s job, you may be eligible to write-off your health insurance premiums on your taxes. However, you can’t write off more in health insurance premiums than you earned.

Health insurance premiums paid with your own after-tax dollars are tax deductible. For example, if you purchased health insurance on your own through a health insurance exchange or directly from an insurance company, the money you paid toward your monthly premiums can be taken as a tax deduction.

Some Medicare plans are tax deductible. This includes Medicare Part B and Part D prescription coverage.

There are limits to the amount of your health insurance you can deduct. If you are able to write-off your health insurance, there are limits to how much of your premiums you can write off.

If you’re able to claim your health insurance as a medical expense deduction. you can only deduct medical expenses that exceed 10% of your adjusted gross income (7.5% if you’re 65 or older). If you’re self-employed and claimed the self-employed health insurance deduction, you don’t have to exceed the 10% threshold because you’re writing the premiums off as an adjustment to your self-employment income rather than as a tax deduction deduction.

As with all tax laws, TurboTax is up-to-date with the latest tax law changes. If you have more questions about the Affordable Care Act and how it impacts you and your taxes, you can get answers from TurboTax Health .

Annual Cost to Own and Operate a Vehicle Falls to $8,698, Finds AAA

ORLANDO, Fla. (April 28, 2015) – Due to declines in gas prices and finance charges, the annual cost to own and operate a vehicle has fallen to $8,698, a nearly 2 percent drop from last year, according to AAA’s 2015 Your Driving Costs study. This research examines the cost of fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, license and registration fees, taxes, depreciation and finance charges associated with driving a typical sedan 15,000 miles annually. In the United States, a driver can expect to spend 58 cents for each mile driven, nearly $725 per month, to cover the fixed and variable costs associated with owning and operating a car in 2015.

    Additional Resources

“Fortunately, reduced gasoline and finance costs more than offset rising costs in other areas,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s Managing Director of Automotive Engineering and Repair. “As a result, car owners can look forward to saving approximately $178 this year.”

    Based on 15,000 miles

Fuel: DOWN 13.77 percent to 11.2 cents per mile/$1,681.50 per year (-$268.50).

Compared to last year’s study, the average cost of regular unleaded fuel fell nearly 13 percent to $2.855 per gallon. This decline, coupled with improvements in vehicle fuel economy, resulted in an average 11.21 cents-per-mile fuel cost. Due in large part to this decrease, the cost of owning and operating a sport utility vehicle is slightly less than that of a large sedan this year.

Finance Charges: DOWN 21.02 percent to $669 per year (-$178).

With rising car sales and stiff competition among dealers, many manufacturers are offering low finance rates to attract buyers. In 2015, average vehicle finance rates dropped 21 percent, which equates to approximately $15 per month on a typical five-year loan. However, rates vary widely with borrower credit scores.

Depreciation: UP 4.10 percent to $3,654 per year (+144).

The single largest ownership expense, depreciation, rose for 2015 due to increasing new car sales that are causing an influx of used and off-lease vehicles entering the marketplace. This increased supply has resulted in lower values and selling prices for used vehicles, thus driving up depreciation costs.

Insurance: UP 8.99 percent to $1,115 per year (+$92)

Insurance rates vary widely by driver, driving habits, insurance company and geographical area. AAA’s calculations are based on low-risk drivers with excellent driving records. While premium calculations are confidential, this modest increase of $7.67 per month may be due in part to high-cost modern vehicle features such as infotainment systems, advanced safety features and lightweight materials that can be more expensive to repair and, therefore, insure.

Maintenance: UP .99 percent to 5.11 cents per mile/$766.50 per year (+$7.50)

Annual maintenance, including labor time and repair part costs associated with factory-recommended maintenance, was factored into the 2015 survey along with average costs of an extended warranty. Maintenance costs varied widely by vehicle type but, on average, were up slightly from 5.06 cents to 5.11 cents per mile. A recent survey of AAA-Approved Auto Repair shops found that the majority of drivers are behind schedule in routine maintenance, including oil changes, tire maintenance and battery inspection/testing.

    License/Registration/Taxes: UP 3.74 percent to $665 per year (+$24)

Vehicle prices rose modestly in 2014, contributing to an overall increase in state and local tax costs. Additionally, some states increased fees related to vehicle purchasing, titling, registration and licensing.

Tires: UP 1.03 percent to .98 cents per mile/$147 per year (+$1.50)

Due to the competitive and dynamic nature of the tire market, tire costs in 2015 remain relatively unchanged, rising by just .01 cents per mile.

In addition to calculating the driving costs for sedans, AAA determined annual costs associated with both minivans and sport utility vehicles. Owners of these vehicles will benefit from annual driving costs nearly four percent lower this year, at $9,372 and $10,624 respectively, due to lower gas prices and finance rates.

“When shopping for a vehicle, smaller isn’t always cheaper,” cautioned Nielsen. “A minivan, for example, can carry up to 7 passengers, yet costs $100 less to own and operate each month compared to a large sedan.”

AAA has published Your Driving Costs since 1950. That year, driving a car 10,000 miles per year cost 9 cents per mile, and gasoline sold for 27 cents per gallon.

The Your Driving Costs study employs a proprietary AAA methodology to analyze the cost to own and operate a vehicle in the United States. Variable operating costs considered in the study include fuel, maintenance and repair, and tires. Fixed ownership costs factored into the results include insurance, license and registration fees, taxes, depreciation and finance charges. Ownership costs are calculated based on the purchase of a new vehicle that is driven over five years and 75,000 miles. Your actual operating costs may vary. See AAA’s 2015 Your Driving Costs brochure for a list of vehicles and additional information on the underlying criteria used in the study.

As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 55 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. Similarly, people with good credit score statistically drive safer than people who have poor credit scores.

The insurance companies figure that you, as an educated or financially cautious individual, will drive safely like all the others.

Your occupation and the driving distance to your job are two important, controllable factors.

The insurance company considers the total number of miles driven each year.

If you are hoping to decrease your insurance premiums, you could start taking the bus or carpooling to work, or stop frequently driving your work vehicle.

    Battling the Average

Though you contend with the average premium rate for your state and city, there are measures you can take to pay a below average rate.

You can look into multiple car or multiple-policy discounts, or you can drop comprehensive or collision damage and simply pay for liability insurance.

Remember, the averages compiled for each state are based on full coverage contracts that includeliability, comprehensive and collision.

If you take definite steps to decrease your personal and the insurance company’s risk, you can enjoy a much greater discount than the average person.

Cost of Mold Remediation – Estimates and Prices Paid #mold #remediation, #mold

    Mold Remediation Cost

Molds are simple organisms (fungi) that grow on almost any organic substance as long as there’s oxygen and moisture. Small amounts of indoor mold are normal, but large quantities can cause odors, health problems [1 ] and, in some cases, structural damage to wood. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers “A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home” [2 ] .

    • If the mold is confined to a surface area of no more than 10 square feet (about 3-feet-by-3-feet), the EPA suggests you can remove it yourself [3 ] by scrubbing hard surfaces with detergent and water, then drying.
    • Removing mold from an average house crawlspace [4 ] ranges from $500-$4,000, according to Charter Oak Environmental of Connecticut. Overall, a typical mold remediation project to remove mold from the ducts, crawl spaces, walls and attic of a house runs around $2,000-$6,000. And if the mold has caused widespread structural damage, repair costs can increase the total to as much as $10,000-$30,000 or more.

Related articles: Mold Inspection. Lead Paint Abatement. Asbestos Removal

    What should be included:

    • Also called mildew, mold can grow on wood, paper, carpet and food. Although some forms of mold are extremely dangerous or even toxic, most molds are relatively harmless. To reproduce, molds release tiny spores which are often (but not always) airborne. It’s not possible to eliminate all mold and mold spores — the key to controlling mold growth inside your home is controlling moisture. Fix any leaky plumbing or other sources of water, and dry any water-damaged items or areas with 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. North Carolina State University’s Cooperative Extension Program provides a mildew prevention guide [5 ] .
    • Even when mold is dead, the remains can still cause health problems. Remediation includes killing the mold and removing it. Specialized professional equipment includes air scrubbers, HEPA-filtered air movers, industrial-strength biocides and moisture meters. When mold is disturbed, it sends out reproductive spores — so it’s essential to prevent the spread of mold during the cleanup process. Workers wear respirators, gloves and special protective clothing. The work area should be surrounded by plastic sheeting, and all air vents, doors or other openings covered. A large project or a toxic mold may require a decontamination chamber or airlock for entering or exiting the work area. North Carolina State University provides mold remediation guidelines [6 ] .

    Additional costs:

    • Usually mold testing or inspection should be done before the remediation work to determine the extent of the problem, and afterward to be sure the process was successful. Although some remediation companies offer free inspections, many industry experts recommend having the inspections done by a different firm.
    • The presence of mold means there’s a water problem that must be fixed or the mold will return. This could require new plumbing; improving your home’s ventilation or drainage; moving air conditioning units out of the attic; adding a vapor barrier; or repairing or replacing the roof. Costs will depend on the type and extent of the problem.
    • If there is toxic mold or the remediation area is large, it may be necessary to pay for other housing until the work is done.

    Discounts:

    • The cost of mold remediation might be tax deductible [7 ] ; check with your tax professional or the IRS [8 ] .

    Shopping for mold remediation:

    • Mold spreads easily when disturbed, and an untrained mold remediation contractor can do more harm than good. Check with your state licensing board [9 ] to be sure a contractor is licensed specifically for mold remediation. Request and check references; ask about training, certification and experience; know exactly who in the company will perform any needed work; and be sure the company has general liability insurance. Check for any complaints with the Better Business Bureau [10 ]. A Texas company explains how to select [11 ] a mold remediation contractor.
    • There are a number of organizations offering mold “certification” — some require only a fee or an online course to qualify as a certified expert. Check to be sure that your contractor is certified by a group requiring training, experience and testing. Referrals are available from the American Council for Accredited Certification.

    Extent of Damage: Attic space

April 2015 (drop down box does not give 2015 as an option)
I bought a 1600+ sq ft ranch house that needed mold remediation in the attic. My best guess of why the mold was there is perhaps when the previous owner replaced the roof, they forgot to properly ventilate the three bathrooms and they covered the soffit vents with insulation to save money on heating bill. The roof is about 7-10 years old, so I’m guessing this was how long the house had improper ventilation.
The company I hired for mold remediation in my attic used mostly bleach. I didn’t do much research beforehand, but in the documents that I signed, the contractor said they would use Microban, ShockWave, SurfaceShield, and bleach
It is too early to determine the quality of the job they did. If you’re reading this at a later date, please email me if you’d like an update.

    Extent of Damage:

If you have or suspect mold in your house, basement, attic or crawl space; then I strongly suggest hiring a professional to inspect and remediate the problem. Ask for certifications. And not just GL insurance but also Environmental Pollution (EP) insurance. If one doesn’t have EP insurance then any damage from the remediation will not be covered by just their GL. EP covers mold water intrusions and is very expensive to have. trust me Also, the use of bleach is not recommended as it will cause an allergic reaction with some types of molds releasing harmful spores into the air. An antimicrobial solution should be used to remediate the mold. This type of product cost about $25-$35 more a gallon than bleach. That’s why unprofessional contractors have taken jobs away from me because they were cheaper. They also used bleach in which the home owners had no idea of the risk. If your in VA and have ?’s about mold, please feel free to contact me. Hope this helps. D. Nixon 804.437.0870

    Extent of Damage: basement

If you are willing to buy a house with mold or one that has flooded in the past (whether or not the seller allegedly clean it out), the best thing that you can do is to hire an environmental specialist to inspect the damage first (this is not covered in the initial inspection of the home as this is not part of their job description). They will be able inform you how much damage there really is and give you an estimate of how much it will cost to repair the damages. If there is visible damage, there is a definite possibly that the mold spead to the structure of the house as well. If there is no visible damage, there may be damage under the paneling or wall that you can not see. This also has the possiblity of causing structural damage. Weighing the results from the environmental specialist’s views will help you to determine if the house is worth it in the end. If you choose not to use an environmental specialist due to costs, you are better off finding another house because the damages are could be higher than hiring a professional only for an estimate. Especiially seeing that many of them will do the estimate for free.

Does Your Home’s Air Conditioner ACTUALLY Need a Refrigerant Charge?

When something technical or mechanical breaks, you re at the mercy of the expert s advice to figure out what s wrong and what you need to do to fix it. Who hasn t had that feeling with a car mechanic when your car breaks down?

But we re betting you feel the same way if your air conditioner stopped blowing cold air and a contractor told you that it needs a refrigerant charge.

You wonder, Do I REALLY need a refrigerant / Freon charge, or am I being ripped off?
It s a good question! There s nothing wrong with a healthy dose of skepticism when your money is on the line.

Here are 2 signs an A/C contractor may be trying to scam you and charge you for refrigerant when you might not really need it.

    1) Contractor says you need more refrigerant without checking A/C unit

Imagine this scenario: You re sick, go to the doctor and tell him your symptoms. The doctor looks you up and down and says, Aha, all you need is surgery! No tests, just a quick solution.

Sounds silly, but that is what some air conditioning contractors will do. They ll hear the symptoms (air conditioner is blowing hot air) and recommends a refrigerant charge without actually checking to see if that s the case.

This may have some nasty consequences for you:

    1. The contractor will miss the real problem (meaning you still won t have any cool air and you wasted your money.)
    2. The contractor may overcharge your system, causing costly damage to your air conditioner.

What else could the problem be?

Well, there are several things that could cause your home s air conditioner to stop blowing cold air, including:

    • Compressor issues
    • Dirty air filter
    • Dirty outside condenser unit
    • The thermostat was accidentally set on heat instead of cool (hey, it happens!)

A contractor needs to use special equipment to check the refrigerant levels before recommending that you need a refrigerant charge.

OK, so the contractor has actually checked the refrigerant levels. But you still may be getting ripped off if.

    2) Contractor mentions your A/C used up the refrigerant

If you re actually low on refrigerant, then there s most likely a leak somewhere in your system where the refrigerant is escaping.

If there s no mention of finding a leak, then that means a couple things:

    1. You don t really need refrigerant and the contractor is pulling your leg
    2. You do need refrigerant, but any refrigerant that s added will leak out, only offering a temporary fix, meaning you ll be paying for more refrigerant soon enough (how soon depends on how big the leak is).

What a contractor should do if you think you re low on refrigerant

    1. Check the cooling system s refrigerant levels
    2. If you are low, then contractor searches for a leak (this may take some time)
    3. Once found, then all the refrigerant is evacuated using a refrigerant recovery system, so not to expel the polluting gasses freely into the air
    4. Contractor fixes the leak
    5. Contractor fills the system with refrigerant levels that meet manufacturer s specifications

If it s a major leak on a condenser or evaporator coil, repairing your A/C may be expensive. And if the air conditioner is old, then replacing your air conditioner may be the most cost efficient option .

    Hospice Care Cost/Financing Options

Under Medicare, hospice benefits are limited to persons whose physician has determined they have six months or less to live. Hospice patients are recertified for Medicare after the first 90 days, again after the second 90 days and every 60 days thereafter.

The Typical Costs Associated With Hospice Care

Hospice Care is very cost efficient when compared to care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility. A Duke University study showed that hospice services reduce Medicare’s hospital costs by an average of $2,309 per patient. According to the HOA, the average rates for Hospice Care as of October 1, 2010 were $146.63/day for routine home care, $855.79/day for continuous care (24-hour) or $35.66/hour if a nurse is in the home less than 24 hours; and $151.67/day for respite care. The average length of stay in a hospice program increased from between 52.6 and 69 days to 83 days by 2008.

How Much of The Cost Does Medicare Cover?

Medicare pays all hospice related charges in almost all U.S. states although payments are adjusted in relation to geographic differences in the wage index. This information is based on Medicare certified programs/agencies. Reliable data about non-certified hospices are unavailable and anyone considering their use should not only research them thoroughly but should understand that Medicare is unlikely to pick up the tab.

What About Insurance for the Things Medicare Won’t Cover

Medicare remains the primary source of financing for Hospice Care; however, a 1998 study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation indicated that 46 out of 52 private health insurance plans cover hospice care.

It is emphasized that Medicare will not cover any treatments or medications, like chemotherapy or radiation, meant to cure the terminal illness. All hospice patients sign a form authorizing Medicare payment for hospice care rather than other forms of treatment for the terminal illness. However, Medicare will still pay for any covered benefits for health problems, like asthma, that are not related to the terminal illness. If the patient’s health improves hospice care can be stopped and the individual can be transferred to an acute care facility, but the option of returning to a hospice program is always open.

    Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary results of the economic analyses of the National Hospice Study (NHS), mandated by the United States Congress to investigate the implications of including hospice services in Medicare. Data were collected over an 18-month period from approximately 4,000 patients receiving hospice and conventional terminal care in 25 hospices and 12 conventional care sites. Subsequent analysis may lead to changes in the specific results, and some of the differences may be due to confounding variables that cannot be adjusted for. According to these data, hospital based (HB) hospice costs per day are 44 per cent higher than home care (HC) hospice costs per day ($95 versus $66, respectively). In addition, per patient hospice costs are 24 per cent more for patients enrolled in HB than in HC hospices ($5,890 versus $4,758, respectively). The proportional difference between HB and HC in cost per patient is smaller than the cost per day difference due to the shorter average HB length of stay, 62.3 days compared to 72.5 days for HC. Regarding the cost savings of hospice compared to conventional care, HC hospice costs are lower than conventional care costs regardless of length of stay. However, HB costs seem lower than conventional care costs only for patients with lengths of stay less than two months. Hospice and conventional care patients appear to differ with respect to predisposition toward intensive health care utilization. When this difference is explored more thoroughly in subsequent analyses, the estimated cost differential between hospice and conventional care may change.

Pros and Cons of State-Funded Drug Rehab

Understanding State-Sponsored Drug and Alcohol Rehab Options

There are countless drug facilities and detox centers throughout the country. Many of these provide high quality care and complete medical services in order to guide a patient through a successful recovery. However, many of the recovery options cost a lot of money and with treatment sometimes taking several months to complete; patients may be unable to afford the costs, even with a loan or a payment plan. This is a slippery slope. the patient needs help because they are struggling with a dependency, but are unable to save up for help because they are spending their money on their continued drug or alcohol abuse. If you have no possible other alternative, there are free programs available.

    What is State-Funded Treatment?

That is where the state-sponsored program comes into play. These facilities target those living in poverty, have lower incomes, do not have a quality health insurance plan or for any other reason cannot possibly afford to private pay for addiction treatment. As the name itself suggests, these detox clinics and drug rehab centers are funded by the state. If a patient does not have insurance or cannot pay for the overall costs necessary, they can attend these programs free of charge. These state-sponsored clinics might not have the same accommodations that many of the private recovery facilities do, but that does not mean that they cannot help users who need it. The funding granted to these recovery programs varies state to state, which means that the different centers across the nation can greatly vary in the treatments and services that they are able to offer the patient.

    What are the Benefits?

There are a number of benefits to these programs. The following two are the main benefits cited by former patients.

    • The cost Many of these programs are available free of charge for eligible participants. Even though the procedures may not be as up-to-date as with privacy rehab and though the facility might not be as nice as luxury treatment options, some patients are simply unable to spend even a dime on treatment. The first step is finding help. Getting help at these facilities is certainly better than no help at all.
    • The care Even with some of the drawbacks, the specialists that work at these facilities still have a good understanding of what they are doing. Even taking into account that the facilities might not be as upscale, it does not mean a patient cannot recover in a state sponsored program.

    What are the Drawbacks?

Just as with any program, there are some disadvantages in selecting a state funded recovery facility, as well. The following are some of the more significant disadvantages:

    • The waiting list Addiction is a serious problem that will often alienate people from their friends and family members. Many people struggling with dependence do not start finding help until they already have a massive debt, lost their job, or have serious physical issues, or perhaps a combination of all three. Research has shown that it is important to move quickly when a long-term user is willing to seek help. Not only is the motivation usually temporary (meaning that you may have to convince them all over again later on ) but it is important to move fast in order to avoid further physical and emotional damage. Considering some recovery programs may have upwards of a six-month waitlist, you can understand why it goes against everything we have just mentioned.
    • The Revolving Door Given that these programs have limited funds and limited capacity, there are some patients who believe that they might be released from the facility before their treatment is ‘complete’. This leads to them feeling alienated from the whole concept and makes them less likely to attend rehab again in the future.
    • Outdated techniques With a limited budget, it is no surprise that these facilities sometimes have to make do with what they have. This means that they occasionally use the same methodology that has been around for decades because upgrades cost money. However, the field of addiction science is constantly evolving, continuously coming up with new developments. This is not to say that the older techniques might not work, but they might not be as effective. These programs often rely on the AA / 12-step program.
    • Privacy Many patients feel uncomfortable sharing information about their dependency with government institutions. Because they have no idea how many people are likely to attend or who they might encounter in rehabilitation, some feel that it is better to find an alternative option a little farther away.

    How Are You Admitted?

In a private rehab facility, you call admissions, answer questions, show proof that you are able to pay for treatment and then enroll. However, entering into these state-run programs may be slightly more difficult. Because every state is different, there is no ‘standard’ that we can give you, but oftentimes you contact the center first in order to find out what type of drug addiction treatment services are offered. You then need to check out the qualification criteria for admission. Perhaps you need to show financial statements that show you have no available finances to pay for recovery. Perhaps you have no insurance to pay for the costs of recovery. After you have given the necessary information, you are likely admitted and will end up on the wait list for entry.

Get Help Finding the Right Option

If you are going to opt for a state supported program, remember that not all states distribute their grants equally. Two different programs in the same state might not offer the same type of recovery. You could do the research yourself and try to find that information online, or you could rely on our network to help you make your decision much easier.

If you want help finding a state-supported recovery program near you that does have availability or are seeking an alternative option, call New Beginnings right now . We can help you find a program that you feel will work for you, whether it is free-of-charge or perhaps something affordable on a payment plan we are here to help you.

Although Mercedes-Benz had high hopes for the brand’s city car nameplate, the Smart Fortwo has—so far—remained a very low-volume player in the U.S. market. Even so, that hasn’t stopped parent company Mercedes -Benz from introducing a redesigned Fortwo, with coupe, convertible, and electric models.

Least Expensive. The Fortwo may be Smart’s only offering in the U.S. but the car is offered in lots trims including the least expensive, the Pure Coupe that starts under $16,000.

Sportiest. The Smart Fortwo coupe and convertible offer a Brabus sport package that upgrades the suspension as well as curb appeal, with staggered 16-inch wheels in front and 17s in back, finished in a matte gray paint.

Most Expensive. With a starting price of over $20,000 before any potential tax credits, the Smart Fortwo Cabrio in electric form is the brand’s most expensive offering.

What is the GASTRIC SLEEVE? Information on cost, benefits of vertical sleeve?

    #

    GastricSleeve (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy)

The gastric sleeve is the lastest weight loss procedure that shows promising results. By restricting food absorbtion and reducing hunger the gastric sleeve might be your best option. Please consult with our surgeon or staff to find out if this is the best procedure for you. Advantages of gastric sleeve include lower cost, less dumping, fewer complications and does not require adjustments after the initial surgery.

The vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive form of weight loss surgery in which approximately 85% of the stomach is removed leaving a cylindrical or sleeve shaped stomach with a capacity ranging from about 60 to 150 cc, depending upon the surgeon performing the procedure. Unlike many other forms of bariatric surgery, the outlet valve and the nerves to the stomach remain intact and, while the stomach is drastically reduced in size, its function is preserved. Again, unlike other forms of surgery such as the Roux en Y gastric bypass, the sleeve gastrectomy is not reversible.

Because the new stomach continues to function normally there are far fewer restrictions on the foods which patients can consume after surgery, albeit that the quantity of food eaten will be considerably reduced. This is seen by many patients as being one of the great advantages of the sleeve gastrectomy, as is the fact that the removal of the majority of the stomach also results in the virtual elimination of hormones produced within the stomach which stimulate hunger.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of the gastric sleeve lies in the fact that it does not involve any bypass of the intestinal tract and patients do not therefore suffer the complications of intestinal bypass such as intestinal obstruction, anemia, osteoporosis, vitamin deficiency and protein deficiency. It also makes it a suitable form of surgery for patients who are already suffering from anemia, Crohn’s disease and a variety of other conditions that would place them at high risk for surgery involving intestinal bypass.

Facts about the gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy:

Alternative names: vertical sleeve gastrectomy, sleeve gastrectomy, greater curvature gastrectomy, parietal gastrectomy, gastric reduction and vertical gastroplasty.

Surgery for high BMI patients. For patients with a particularly high body mass index (typically 50+) many forms of weight loss surgery are either difficult to perform or present increased risk. As a result, a vertical sleeve gastrectomy (or increasingly a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) is sometimes performed as the first of a two-part weight loss solution to provide an initial drop in weight which then makes other bariatric follow up possible at a reduced level of risk.

Surgery for low BMI patients. For obese patients with a relatively low body mass index the vertical sleeve gastrectomy can also prove a good choice, especially where existing conditions (such as anemia or Crohn’s disease) prevent them from having other forms of bariatric surgery. In addition, patients may choose this form of surgery if they are concerned about the long-term affects of bypass surgery or object to having a ‘foreign’ body implanted into their body, as is the case with lap band surgery.

    Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

During sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon will remove the larger, rounded part of the stomach.

    • The remaining stomach looks like a sleeve (or hose or tube) and holds about 15 percent as much food as the original stomach.
    • The surgeon will remove the larger, rounded part of the stomach from the body. (This is the only gastric surgery in which part of the stomach is taken out of the body.)
    • Unlike gastric bypass, which changes stomach openings, sleeve gastrectomy leaves the openings intact.
    • It may be a safer and more effective option than gastric bypass for patients with very high BMI, those with medical problems like anemia, Crohns disease, osteoporosis, extensive prior surgeries and other complex medical conditions.
    • Sleeve gastrectomy may be safer than gastric bypass for patients who have a number of health risks.
    • It lowers the risk of ulcers compared to gastric bypass.
    • The surgery cuts away the part of the stomach that produces grehlin, a stomach hormone that stimulates hunger.
    • Though the stomach is smaller, the openings are left intact, so digestion can go on as normal.
    • The body is free of foreign objects like the LAP-BAND or Realize Band.
    • May be converted to gastric bypass or duodenal switch if necessary for additional weight loss
    • Expected excess weight loss for stand-alone procedure is 60 to 70% at two years
    • Sleeve gastrectomy is more common in Europe, but most American health insurance carriers still consider it an investigational procedure and do not cover the cost. But that is rapidly changing so please consult our office to see if your insurance will cover the gastric sleeve.
    • Anytime you have anesthesia or surgery, there is a risk of blood clots, other complications or death.
    • Do not smoke. Smoking would put you at high risk for infection, blood clots, slow healing and other life-threatening complications.
    • Complications can occur with the stapling, such as leaks or bleeding.
    • You may need malabsorptive surgery intestinal bypass or duodenal switch in addition to your sleeve gastrectomy in order to lose all the weight you need and want to lose.
    • The smaller portion of the stomach may stretch.
    • Foods that you eat now may cause discomfort, nausea or vomiting after your surgery.
    • Gastric surgery puts you at higher than normal risk of developing gallstones and gallbladder disease.
    • You will not lose weight or maintain your weight loss unless you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. This is the reason we stress long-term follow-up with our center and your doctor.

How Much Does Cord Blood Banking Cost? Question On Stem Cell Storage

    #

How Much Does Cord Blood Banking Cost?

What Are The Costs Of Stem Cell Blood Banking?

The following is an average costing for private blood banking in Western Europe. While the service of public banking is free it does mean you are giving up rights to the stem cells. They go into a public pool available for use by the general public for medical treatment or by scientists for research.

    United States
Most private cord blood banks charge between $1,000 and $2,500 for the collection, processing and initial storage of stem cells. Then you will be required to pay an additional annual maintenance fee of between $200 and $400. Additionally, you may need to pay the hospital a fee for organizing a health provider to withdraw the blood after delivery. Most health insurance companies will not cover these costs. When choosing a cord bank company to store your baby’s blood, ensure they are at a minimum accredited by the AABB, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks. Accredited blood banks are inspected every 2 years by the AABB. In an ideal world choose a bank which has also passed the FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, FACT) inspection process. Only a handful of American companies have managed to do this.

    Canada
The average cost of collection, processing and initial storage is about $1,200 and an annual ongoing fee of $100 to $150. You can normally reduce the annual fee by agreeing to pay a certain amount of years up front.

    United Kingdom
The average combined cost of collection, processing and storage for 25 years is about £1,500 to £2,000. Currently about 100,000 sets of parents have chosen to bank their children’s blood in the UK.

    Ireland
The average cost of collection, processing and initial storage is about 1,700 Euros with an annual ongoing storage fee of 200 Euros. Irish people are less likely to use this service than their European counterparts. For example, while 18.5 percent of Greeks, 12 percent of Spaniards and 8 percent of Portuguese preserve the stem cells of their children, the figure stands at 0.0001 percent in Ireland.

How much does a solar system cost these days?

    To Top | Article Highlights

The cost of a solar power system installed on your roof top has reduced significantly over the years, and even more so in recent years, as more and more homeowners turn to solar, the demand increased and prompted many companies to manufacture and distribute solar components at a high quality, but at a much reduced rate due to the increased competition.

Here is a chart that demonstrates that price reduction:

It is quite clear from the chart how big the price cut was, and that’s for a complete system without reducing the cost for the customer after applying the incentives and tax breaks homeowners gets from their respective states.

While these vary from state to state, in many of them, it is now so lucrative, that solar powered homes make a lot of sense .

Check your Solar Costs by using our FREE Solar Calculator. it’s that easy!

To further demonstrate the costs or rather, the reduction of cost for the systems, here is a chart that shows how the cost of the component has been used in a residential solar power installation reduced.

Amazingly enough, the chart shows a reduction of rates from quarter to quarter (!) as of 2014, not years.

To know your savings, you will need..

Solar power systems are different from one location to the next. To figure out exactly how much electricity you can save, installation companies need to know the following:
Where do you live? – Each state has different solar policies thus changing the savings from one location to the next.
Is there shade on your roof? – Obviously to go solar, you will need the help of the sun, and the more, the better.
What type of roof do you have? – Some are easier than others to install on.
What direction is your roof facing? – A key factor for the system to maximize its potential.
What is your current electric bill? – The more you pay, the more you will save with solar .

Here is a great video detailing the cost of solar PV system breakdown:

    The California Case Study

Let’s take a look at a typical 5KW system installation and savings of a Los Angeles home in California .

This is just to demonstrate your savings. It is obviously very different from home to home and we recommend connecting with solar installers for the most accurate quotes on costs and savings.

An average cost for 5KW of system will cost you around $20K to install. (Panels, labor, connections etc.). This is just our starting point. Now we need to subtract the incentives and solar federal tax breaks as follows: Subtract the rebate you’ll receive for each KW, which is totaled at $3750.

Now we need to subtract the federal solar tax credit at an amazing 30% to reduce the bill by another $4875 dollars. That brings your total savings to $8625 dollars !

So, all of a sudden, a $20K investment turns to $11,375. That is almost half of the original cost, and that’s big.

Again, each state has a different policy and each municipal, has different incentives like rebate program. For example, the LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) rebate program is much different than the SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utility District) rebate program.

T o get the most accurate quote, and see exactly how much you can save, click here and get a quote from a qualified solar installer.

One of the main reasons people tend to not get very excited about the prospect of installing a solar energy system to their home is their perception of the costs involved.

[blue[The truth is, over the long term, a solar energy system will pay for itself. and will actually generate you money in the form of lower utility bills, tax incentives, and selling back a proportion of the energy you produce but do not use to utilities companies.[/blue]

How much you stand to make depends upon where in the US you live, how much sunshine you typically see, and how electricity costs you. Naturally, the more money you pay for your energy supply, the more money you will save when you switch to solar .

The costs involved depends upon what kind of system you install. You can even have solar panels installed for free by allowing a solar energy company to lease your roof space off you so they can install their panels there.

They sell the electricity the panels generate back to you at a cost that’s typically much lower than mains electricity. but you will not receive the tax breaks and long-term benefits available to you if you go down this route.

How much electricity do you use?

If you do buy your own panels, then you will need to buy enough to make your switch to solar worthwhile, and you make it worthwhile by calculating how much electricity you use .

You really need 1 kW worth of solar panels for every $50 you pay in electricity every month, so if you pay $200 for your electricity per month, you are going to need a 4 kW solar panel system.

Each solar panel is worth around 250 to 300 W, so for a 2 kW system you will need eight panels, and for a 4 kW system, you will need sixteen. You will need to make sure you have sufficient roof space to install the system that you require.

    Check out your options

As you may imagine, there are plenty of different manufacturers of solar panels. all having different standards of the efficiency of the panels they produce, with different costs as well.

When you come to install a solar system, unless you decide to do it yourself, the company you choose to perform an installation will provide the panels for you, and will advise you on your options.

A 4 kW solar panel system will cost you between $10,000 and $11,500 to install. If you want to up the juice a little bit, a 5 kW system will cost between $12,500 and $14,000 to install. Don’t forget, it’s not just the panels you are buying – there’s the wiring into your home electricity system as well, plus the cost of the installation itself .

You can find out more about the cost of a solar panel system here. You can also choose to finance the residential energy system, and go solar with zero down payment via solar leasing or Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which is another great way to start save without having to pay for the system in full upfront.

Typically, as soon as you have your system up and running, you will receive tax breaks in line with about 30 percent of the cost of your installation. Most solar panel systems pay for themselves within 8 to 10 years of installation via lower utility bills and tax breaks.

Don’t forget, it’s not just the financial cost you have to take into consideration – there’s the continual cost in terms of damage to the environment if you continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels.

Go solar and you’ll be saving the planet, and your wallet

    Cost of Chemotherapy – Consumer Information #chemotherapy, #chemotherapy #cost, #chemotherapy #prices, #shop

    #

    Chemotherapy Cost

Chemotherapy is treatment of cancer with one or more drugs that kill cancer cells or interfere with their reproduction. Side effects can include anemia, fatigue, infection, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, pain and memory problems.

    • For patients covered by health insurance, out-of-pocket costs for chemotherapy typically consist of doctor visit, lab and prescription drug copays or coinsurance of 10%-50%, depending on the plan and whether the chemotherapy is in pill form or administered by IV or other method. In general, chemotherapy is covered by health insurance. However, certain chemotherapy drugs might not be covered by some insurance plans. The American Cancer Society has information [1 ] on health insurance and chemotherapy.
    • For patients not covered by health insurance, chemotherapy costs typically include the doctor fee, drug administration fee, drug cost and possibly facility fee, depending on how it is administered. Total cost depends on the type of cancer, the individual case, drug regimen used, method of administration and length of time prescribed or number of treatments required. The total cost is about $10,000-$200,000 or more. For example, to administer chemotherapy to a patient, Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center [2 ] in Nebraska charges about $270 for an intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. They charge about $290 for chemotherapy IV push — a quick way of administering a drug through an IV — and $290 for each additional drug. Expect to pay $650, not including doctor fee or drug fee, for one hour of chemotherapy IV infusion, and about an additional $160 for each additional hour of treatment, with the same drug or another drug. They charge about $780 for chemotherapy administration into the central nervous system, including a spinal puncture.
    • The price of chemotherapy drugs varies widely, depending on the drug. For example, according to research [3 ] from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, one course of a drug for chemotherapy for breast cancer can cost about $900-$15,000, depending on the drug(s); and, if growth factor support is added to lessen side effects, that increases costs from more than $4,000 to more than $30,000. According to an article [4 ] in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, combination chemotherapy regimens typically used for advanced colorectal cancer can range from almost $12,000 to over $30,000 for an eight-week course, depending on the drugs. But new drugs usually cost more: for example, Adcetris [5 ]. a recently approved drug that treats recurrences of some types of lymphoma, can cost more than $120,000 for a course of treatment, and so does Yervoy [6 ]. a new skin cancer drug.
    • Medical care required for serious chemotherapy side effects such as anemia, infections and white blood cell problems can add substantially to the total cost. For example, according to information [7 ] from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, each type of complication cost about $2,000-$4,000 per month in one group of patients studied.

    What should be included:

    • Chemotherapy is given in different ways, depending on the drug and the specific case. It can be taken orally, given by IV or injected under the skin, directly into an artery, directly into the tumor or it can be infused into a body cavity around the tumor. The American Cancer Society offers a guide [8 ] to the ways chemotherapy can be administered.
    • A doctor typically chooses chemotherapy drugs based on evidence from clinical trials. The American Cancer Society offers information on the most common chemotherapy drugs and protocols used for: breast cancer [9 ]. colorectal cancer [10 ]. prostate cancer [11 ]. non-small-cell lung cancer [12 ]. melanoma [13 ]. and bladder cancer [14 ] .
    • The American Cancer Society offers an overview [15 ] of the types of chemotherapy drugs and how they work.

    Additional costs:

    • Cancer patients will need regular follow-up visits and, in some cases, tests to check for recurrence. According to information [16 ] from the National Cancer Institute, patients generally need to visit a doctor every three to four months for the first two or three years, then every six months to a year. health.costhelper.com/blood-test.html>Blood tests. health.costhelper.com/mri.html>MRIs or CT scans or endoscopy might also be required. Follow-up visits can cost from under $200 to $400 or more.

    Discounts:

    • Many hospitals give discounts of up to 30% or more to uninsured/cash-paying patients. For example, Washington Hospital Healthcare System [17 ] in California offers a 35% discount.

    Shopping for chemotherapy:

    • The American Society of Clinical Oncology offers an oncologist locator [18 ] with the option to search for a medical oncologist, a doctor who specializes in chemotherapy.

Hospice care is covered under a number of health insurance plans. It is important to know what services are covered under each plan and what out-of-pocket expenses you will have to pay.

    Medicare

Medicare Part A has a generous hospice benefit that covers most hospice services for the terminal illness. For example, if a patient has terminal cancer and suffers a hip fracture, the services below are covered to provide palliative (comfort) care for the cancer but not to treat the hip fracture. The patient would need to use his or her Medicare benefit to cover the care needed for the hip fracture.

The Medicare hospice benefit covers the following:

    • Physician services
    • Nursing care
    • Medical equipment
    • Medical supplies
    • Medication for pain relief and symptom control
    • Short-term care in a hospital
    • Respite care (up to five days at a time)
    • Physical, occupational and speech therapy
    • Home health aide and homemaker services
    • Social work services
    • Dietary counseling
    • Bereavement services

For the covered services listed above, the patient pays the following:

    • Up to $5 for each prescription for out-patient medications or similar products for pain relief and symptom control
    • Five percent of the Medicare payment for in-patient respite care

The following services are not covered under the Medicare Hospice Benefit:

    • Treatment to cure the terminal illness
    • Care from another provider that was not arranged by your hospice
    • Care from another provider that is the same as the care available at your hospice
    • Room and board, if you live in a private residence, assisted living facility, or nursing home. If, however, a patient is admitted to a hospital or nursing home under the in-patient level of care, room and board may be covered.

Note: For more information on the Medicare Hospice Benefit, the publication “Medicare Hospice Benefits” can be downloaded (PDF). You may also call 1-800-633-4227 to order Medicare publications.

    Periods of Care
A patient may receive hospice services for as long as the doctor certifies that he or she is terminally ill and that, if the illness runs its normal course, the life expectancy is less than six months. Medicare authorizes hospice care in periods of care. A hospice patient may be certified by the doctor for two 90-day periods, followed by an indefinite number of 60-day periods. The first period of care starts when the patient begins to receive hospice care. At the end of each period, if the patient is still in need of hospice care, the doctor must recertify the patient for another period of care.

    Medical Assistance (Medicaid)

The Medical Assistance Program (also called Medicaid) pays for a variety of services for individuals with low income. To be eligible for any service funded by the Medical Assistance Program, an individual must meet the financial requirements.

Forty-seven states, including Maryland, cover hospice care under their Medical Assistance programs. In Maryland, the coverage under Medical Assistance is virtually the same as under Medicare, except that the hospice patient may be certified by the doctor for two 90-day periods, followed by an indefinite number of 30-day periods. Medicare and Medical Assistance pay the hospice directly for services. The hospices are paid a daily rate based on the level of care the patient receives each day.

    Other Insurance

    Department of Veterans Affairs
In Maryland, the Department of Veterans Affairs has inpatient hospice beds at its Perry Point Facility. The Veterans Administration has a description of this service on their web site, as well as information on VA eligibility, enrollment and benefits.

    Long-Term Care Insurance
Most long-term care insurance policies pay for hospice care. The amount of coverage and the eligibility requirements may differ. Consult your policy.

    Private Insurance
Most private health insurance plans cover hospice. Private insurers generally use a “fee for service” model, meaning the hospice programs either bill the insurance company for each service rendered, or they bill the patient who must submit the bills to the insurance company. Coverage and payment levels differ. Many insurance plans have a lifetime ceiling for hospice benefits. Be sure to check your policy carefully. Private insurers will not approve payment benefits for all agencies so you may not have a choice of which agency will provide care.

    Uninsured Patients
If a patient has no insurance coverage, or if insurance does not cover all costs, the hospice will work with the patient and family to develop a payment plan. Most programs have funds to provide financial assistance for low-income and uninsured patients.
