The Community Bereavement Center

Hospice of the Valley’s Community Bereavement Center exists to offer practical support for those grieving the loss of a loved one. As a hospice benefit, the Center provides ongoing bereavement support. As a community goodwill service, we offer educational resources, short term grief counseling sessions, and ongoing support groups to anyone in need. We offer peer support groups for children, adolescents, and adults. Bereavement support is also available for schools, businesses, churches, and other organizations struggling with unexpected or traumatic loss. Hospice Bereavement Care

Bereavement services are provided to help patients, families and caregivers cope with the grief that occurs during the illness and eventual death of the patient. Bereavement services are provided through Hospice of the Valley’s Bereavement Center and include individual grief counseling, support groups and other services.

What Will I Learn?

This applied professional training course gives you a doctorate-level education leading to a professional qualification. It comprises a comprehensive programme of taught modules, 450 hours of counselling psychology practice in a range of placements, and a doctorate-level research project. Experts guide you through integrated theory, personal and professional development, and clinical practice, with focus on the value of research and how it directly informs current practice.

In-depth preparation for practice

You receive rigorous training on personal, professional and academic levels, which requires you to combine personal development with explicit psychological theory as a basis for mindful clinical practice.

The training will equip you to work in a broad range of settings, including the NHS, industry, third sector, private practice, academic and research roles, and many others. Our links with practices and partner providers, such as LIFT. the NHS and the Avon Wiltshire Partnership. make this course highly vocational and popular with employers.

Based on the relational psychodynamic perspective, coupled with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, this course is designed to help you develop an integrative perspective based on these perspectives and any previous experience. For example, you may already have studied client-centred or existential perspectives as part of counselling certificate courses. The programme team is committed to the view that the therapeutic relationship is a key factor in promoting client change. The relational perspective is therefore a key element taught throughout the whole course. In Year 1 the model taught is relational psychodynamic; in Year 2 it is CBT and in Year 3 we integrate the two.

You must engage in personal counselling or therapy for the first two years of the course a minimum of 60 hours over the course. This reflects our central focus on a relational approach to practice. Please note, the cost for this is not included in the fees.

In the first year of the course, the therapeutic approach is relational, and we expect you to adopt and practice this approach in your placements. In Year 2 we focus on the CBT approach, and again we expect you to apply this to your placements. In Year 3, you get to explore your own identity as a counselling psychologist through modules on integration, and the modules on advanced theory and practice in counselling psychology, include teaching on supervision, leadership, psychometrics and neuropsychological assessment.

If you don’t complete the Professional Doctorate route, you may be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate in Psychotherapeutic Studies, or a Master’s in Psychological Therapy.

  • Principles of Counselling Psychology – this module introduces the fundamental values and ethos of counselling psychology, with a strong focus on ethics and diversity.
  • Theory and Practice in Counselling Psychology 1 – a look at the relational aspects of therapy.

  • Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Psychology – this module covers advanced methods in qualitative and qualitative analysis, ensuring that students have the essential skills for carrying out their research.
  • Systemic Thinking and Practice in Counselling Psychology – this module covers issues around working with couples, families and groups. Thus it gives the students the basis for extending their practice beyond the core emphasis on 1:1 work with individuals.
  • Research Methods in Counselling Psychology – this module contextualises research with the field of counselling psychology, covering additional advanced methods, It also provides support for students in developing their initial research ideas, and guides them through the various ethical processes.
  • Theory and Practice in Counselling Psychology 2 – a look at the CBT approach.
  • Personal and Professional Development 2 – further development through practice placements and personal reflection, based on CBT.
  • Exploring Client Issues in Counselling Psychology – this module explores key issues which are frequently presented in psychotherapy, for example anxiety, depression and substance use. It also considers mental health issues, such as trauma and psychosis.
  • Professional Issues in Counselling Psychology – this module will present a critical oversight of current issues within the profession, such as the current emphasis on empirically supported treatments. It will also consider current work contexts, including multi-disciplinary working and current structures within the National Health Service.
  • Personal and Professional Development 3 – here we begin to integrate current relational and CBT approaches in applied practical and personal contexts.
  • Advanced Theory and Practice in Counselling Psychology – studies and learning that bring relational and CBT perspectives and practices together.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. Learning and Teaching

We use a wide range of teaching and learning methods to give you the best combination of personal, peer and applied learning. These include lectures, group discussion, group work, role-play, skills work, demonstrations, trainee presentations, supervised clinical practice, personal therapy and personal development activities.

Study time

As a full-time student, you attend two days each week in Year 1 (currently Monday and Tuesday) and one day a week in Years 2 and 3 (currently Thursday).

If you study this course part-time, you attend one day each week in Years 1-3 (currently Monday in Year 1, Tuesday in Year 2 and Thursday in Year 3). There is a four-year study option where you attend one day each week in Year 4, on a Thursday. The five-year option requires you to attend a half day each week in Years 4 and 5, both on a Thursday.

Assessment

We assess taught modules through coursework and assessment under controlled conditions. Practice assessment is through direct observation, case studies, process reports, supervision groups and placement reports.

For your research, you submit a 30,000 – 40,000 word doctoral thesis of an original piece of research, examined by viva voce.

Can I Earn My School Guidance Counseling Master’s Degree Online?

There aren’t many online master’s degree programs in school guidance counseling, but the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Educational Programs does accredit some programs, most of which are offered by for-profit schools. In these online guidance counseling master’s degree programs, you are often required to attend on-campus sessions periodically, and you usually still need to participate in internships and clinical experiences. This helps give you the clinical face-to-face experience necessary to work with school children.

The middle 50% of school guidance counselors earned between $40,900 and $69,250 in May 2014.

State licensure or certification requirements for school guidance counselors vary by state, but you will need credentials in most cases. Some states also require you to have a teaching license, according to the BLS. If you’d like to advance, you can teach other counselors or move into school administration, both of which require a higher degree.

Nobody says you need to write a doctoral dissertation to be licensed as a counselor. Nobody says you need to do ground-breaking research either. For some, though, it is a calling. Across the United States, professional counselors are licensed on the basis of a master’s degree. Many professionals, though, opt to study at the doctoral level. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) lists 63 doctoral programs in its directory: the vast majority conferring PhDs, some granting EdDs.

Alcohol and Drug Counseling

The Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program (ADC) prepares graduates for temporary or full licensure with the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health as Alcohol and Drug Counselors.

The program is designed for students who want to learn more about chemical dependency issues and/or whom desire a career as an addiction counselor. Students gain valuable classroom knowledge in 12 core areas of addiction counseling theory, practice, and skill development. Through the required practicum placements in a licensed chemical dependency facility students gain valuable and necessary practical experience under the supervision of a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

The program does not license a student as an alcohol and drug counselor. It does provide the minimum college coursework and practicum opportunities needed to apply for licensure in the State of Minnesota. Upon successful completion of the Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program at RCTC, students are eligible to sit for the IC RC national exam and can apply for at least a temporary licensure with the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health. Graduates whom hold a bachelor s degree or higher are eligible to apply for full permanent licensure.

The curriculum provides students with 19 credits of specific alcohol and drug counseling coursework in at least 12 core competency areas including: foundational theory, screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling skills, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, record keeping, consultation, ethics, multicultural aspects, pharmacology, and co-occurring disorders. An 880-hour practicum is the pinnacle of the academic experience.

RCTC offers an Associate in Science Degree in Alcohol and Drug Counseling. The degree includes the professional core of addiction coursework as well as the necessary general education credits. RCTC also offers a Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Counseling. The certificate option is designed for students whom have an Associate degree or higher and focuses on the professional core of addiction coursework.

Students can enroll on a part-time or full-time basis and may begin either fall or spring semester. Currently all but two of the Human Service (HS) Alcohol and Drug Counseling (ADC) core classes are open to any enrolled RCTC students. The two HS ADC core classes that are not open to all RCTC students are the clinical practicums. Students interested in accessing the clinical practicums must complete a PRACTICUM application form and meet all of the requirements outlined in the form.

Graduates of the program may apply for temporary or permanent licensure as Alcohol and Drug Counselors through the MN Board of Behavioral Health. Graduates may also work directly in the addictions field as chemical dependency technicians, case managers, or residential managers.

Computer Addiction

Some people develop bad habits with their computer use that may cause significant problems in their lives. The types of behavior and negative consequences are similar to those of known addictive disorders, so the term computer or Internet addiction has come into use.

While anyone who uses a computer could be vulnerable, those people who are lonely, shy, easily bored or suffering from another addiction or impulse control disorder are especially vulnerable to computer addiction.

Computer addiction can result from people using it repeatedly as their main stress reliever instead of having a variety of ways to cope with negative events and feelings. Other misuses may include procrastination from undesirable responsibilities, distraction from being upset and attempts to meet needs for companionship and belonging.

While discussions are ongoing about whether excessive use of the computer/Internet is an addiction, the potential problematic behaviors and effects on users seem to be clear.

Signs of Problematic Computer Use

A person who is addicted to the computer is likely to have several of the experiences and feelings listed below:

  • Mixed feelings of well-being and guilt while at the computer.
  • Unsuccessful efforts to quit or limit computer use.
  • Losing track of time while on the computer.
  • Neglecting friends, family and/or responsibilities in order to be online.
  • Lying about time spent on the computer/activities while online.
  • Feeling anxious, depressed or irritable when computer time is shortened or interrupted.

Risks for College Students

  • Your friends are worried about you going on a date alone with a person known only from a chat room.
  • You spend most of your time online talking to friends from home instead of making new friends at college.
  • Almost all your friends are from online activities and contacts.
  • Your romantic partner is distraught because you have replaced your sexual relationship with Internet pornography and/or online sex.

Treatment must begin with recognizing there is a problem. Overcoming denial should be followed by other treatment steps, including:

  • Creating a behavior modification plan, such as setting a timer for usage, planning a daily schedule, keeping a log of moods when online, matching time spent online with time spent socializing face-to-face, and taking part in non-computer related activities.
  • Focusing on other areas for skill enhancement, such as problem solving, assertiveness, social skills, overcoming shyness and anger control.
  • Assessing for other disorders like depression or anxiety that may need medical treatment.
  • Assist in locating or forming a support group for other students who are trying to regain control over their computer use.

How to Help a Computer-Obsessed Friend

  • Be a good role model. Manage the computer use in your own life.
  • Introduce them to other people who handle their computer use sensibly.
  • Get them involved in non-computer related fun.
  • Talk to your friend about your concerns.
  • Support their desire for change if they think they have a problem.
  • Encourage them to seek professional counseling.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
  • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
  • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
  • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
  • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
  • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

Additional Testing

Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

Pending Status

Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. You must remember that it is the client’s prerogative and choice whether to continue in therapy or not. Except in extreme situations, such as when the client poses a danger to self or others, you need to respect their choice. Do not tacitly condone patients dropping out of treatment when your clinical judgment indicates continued care is needed. When clinically and otherwise appropriate, notify the patient of your assessment and recommendations. There is no ethical, clinical or legal mandate to send a registered letter to client. Different clients and situations may require different actions and, at times, lack of action.
  • The question of whether therapists need to send a letter to clients who unilaterally dropped out (i.e. pre-mature termination) was recently addressed by Davis & Younggren in a 2009 PPRP article, where they clearly stated “In ordinary circumstances, however, letters are typically unnecessary and potentially counterproductive to the natural dissolution of the relationship (Davis, 2008). For instance, the client might feel embarrassed or scolded for his or her oblique termination and be less inclined to return. The client might perceive the psychotherapist’s actions as controlling and unnecessarily intrusive. It might seem that the psychotherapist is trying to break up with the client or get rid of him or her with such a formal action. Routine letters of closure not only present an unrealistic administrative burden on the provider, they add to the risk of negative client reactions.” (p. 575)
  • It is not unusual for therapy to break down rather than go through a smooth, clear or distinct termination process with patients with personality disorders (i.e. BPD) or those who were diagnosed with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or Bi-Polar disorders. Termination with these clients can be very abrupt or very long, painful, confusing and tumultuous. Obviously, each case should be handled according to the specific context of therapy. The context of therapy includes client, setting, therapy and therapist factors.
  • You can terminate treatment with clients (or another person with whom the client has a relationship) who threaten or stalk you, your family member or your employees via phone, email, online, in-person or other means. You can also terminate treatment with clients who intrude into your private life via the Internet or in “real” life. You are allowed to protect your privacy and secure your own, your family members’ and employee’s sense of privacy and safety. (Document, document and document.)
  • You must terminate therapy when it becomes reasonably clear that the patient no longer needs the service, is not likely to benefit, or is being harmed by continued service. For those patients who have ongoing treatment needs, when appropriate, one should offer to provide them with assistance with referrals to other appropriately trained and accessible professionals (except when we are being threatened, assaulted, stalked, or other relevant situations).
  • Document discussions of termination issues, agreements reached, decisions made and their rationale, and, when relevant, document the recommendations and follow-ups. Purchase a Termination Summary form
  • Termination of treatment is not always a permanent ending of the professional relationship. Termination is often not relevant during, or an end of phase in, intermittent-long-term psychotherapy. These forms of therapy may continue throughout the life span of individuals and families.
  • Termination is a phase of each patient’s treatment. If possible and appropriate, plan for it, prepare for it, process it. Additionally, each clinician should consider termination in light of their theoretical orientation and treatment approach, each patient’s/client’s diagnosis and treatment needs, and any relevant diversity factors that might impact the process.

    Substance abuse is a problem that affects not just the abusers but also their families and friends. People with addictions are often multiply diagnosed with mental and physical health problems, from obsessive compulsive disorder to HIV/AIDS, and substance abuse counselors work closely with them to identify reasons for their behavior and to take steps to change and remedy it.

However, earning a graduate degree speeds up the process of achieving full certification in the student’s state and usually allows for access to a higher pay scale and supervisory positions.

    Degree Information

    Master’s degrees vary. There are Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Science (M.S.) in Substance Abuse, Clinical Counseling with Substance Abuse Focus, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling. Students will most likely want a program certified by Counsel for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), though there is no national standard for what distinguishes a good substance abuse counseling master’s program. Students may also want to pursue general master’s degrees in Community Counseling, psychology, or social work (M.S.W.) and supplement these with a certificate program in substance abuse counseling. Master’s programs are usually one and a half to two years.

    According to the National Institutes of Health, the average annual salary for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Disorder Counselors was approximately $30,000 in 2002. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that government employers generally pay the highest wages for substance abuse counselors, followed by hospitals and social service agencies. Residential care facilities often pay the lowest wages.

The licensing requirements for direct-service social workers vary from state to state, but LCSWs must be licensed.

Clinical, counseling and school psychologists earned an average salary of $73,090. The job outlook for both social work and psychology is good.     A license to practice in the mental health field indicates that the state of Alaska has verified that a practitioner has completed a professional training program, has completed a period of supervised experience, and has passed a formal examination in their specific profession. While a license is not a guarantee that the practitioner is ethical and competent, it does increase the likelihood that they are, requires continuing professional education, and provides some oversight to the professional’s practice. In Alaska a person can offer services that resemble counseling without a license, but not psychotherapy and cannot use the title Psychotherapist or Psychologist.

    Listed below are the primary licenses for mental health practice. These are brief summaries of the requirements involved. The actual statutes that specify the requirements are quite complex and can be researched here.

    Doctoral Level Licenses

    Licensed Psychologist (Ph.D. Psy.D. or Ed.D.)

    Psychologists complete a master’s degree then a doctoral degree in clinical, counseling, school, or industrial/organizational psychology, one year of pre-degree and one year of post-degree supervised experience, and pass a psychologist�s licensing examination. Psychologists’ training emphasize understanding thought, emotion, and behavior, psychotherapy, psychological testing, and research.

    Psychiatrist (M.D. or D.O.)

    Psychiatrists first become licensed medical doctors. Additionally, they must complete a three-year residency program in psychiatric medicine. Psychiatrists’ training emphasizes the biological basis of thought, emotion, and behavior. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication. In recent years, psychiatrists have moved more towards working more with medication than psychotherapy, though many psychiatrists still offer psychotherapy along with medication services.

    Masters Level Licenses

    Advanced Nurse Practitioner (A.N.P.)

    Advanced Nurse Practitioners complete a two-year master�s degree in nursing, complete a supervised clinical and psychotherapy training internship as part of the degree program, and pass a certifying examination. Not all advanced nurse practitioners have psychiatric training. Most psychiatric advanced nurse practitioners offer both psychotherapy and medication services.

    Licensed Psychological Associate (L.P.A.)

    Psychological Associates complete a two-year master’s degree in clinical or counseling psychology (M.A. or M.S.), two years of supervised post-degree experience, and pass a psychological associate’s licensing examination.

    Licensed Professional Counselor (L.P.C.)

    Licensed Professional Counselors complete a two-year master�s degree in counseling or clinical psychology (M.A. or M.S.), two years of supervised post-degree experience, and pass a written professional counselor�s examination.

    Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.)

Those working in elementary and secondary schools made an average of $74,130 per year at that time, while those who worked in individual and family services made an average annual salary of $68,440.

    Individuals with a doctorate in counseling are trained to assess and diagnose individuals with mental and emotional problems, and develop therapeutic plans to help these individuals address their issues. A state license is required to work as a clinical psychologist, while certification is optional. Annual salaries average to roughly $75,000 per year.

    Essential Information

    Colleges and universities offering online school counseling programs do so at the graduate level since the majority of states require that school counselors have a master’s degree to practice. Because the master’s degree is considered the standard entryway into this career, prospective students do not need an academic or professional background in counseling. They will, however, need to have earned an accredited bachelor’s degree prior to admission.

    On-campus and distance learning master’s degree programs in school counseling are designed to have the same program requirements; this includes both coursework and on-site practicums, internships and on-campus residencies. In some cases, programs follow a cohort model in which students begin their program at the same time and take their required courses together. Regardless of the online program’s format, students need to ensure that it meets the licensure requirements of their state as regulations in the student’s state of residence may differ from the regulations within the state where the college is based.

    Degree in School Counseling

    The coursework in a school counseling master’s degree program seeks to prepare students for handling the unique academic, social and emotional needs of young people in elementary schools on through adolescence. Although classes vary from program to program, most public school systems require prospective school counselors to study the following topics:

    On-Site Requirements

    Counseling programs require in-person practicums and internships that may be completed close to the student’s home at an approved school setting. These experiences usually last a semester or term and require a weekly on-site commitment during daytime hours. Some programs also require online students to spend time on campus in residencies. These may be held in a variety of scheduling formats, such as two weeks in the summer, a week at the program’s onset or a few long weekends during the school year.

    Licensing and Certification

    Certification and licensing for school counselors varies between states. All 50 states and the District of Columbia require public school counselors to have either certification or licensure. Credentials are dependent on the counselor’s education, field experience and an examination; a criminal background check is also required. Several states reduce licensure requirements for counselors who are certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors.

    School counselors must renew their licenses or certifications every 1-6 years, depending on the state. For renewal, they must have taken 20-25 contact hours of continuing education (CE) courses for each year. Many CE courses are available online.

    Online programs in school counseling are offered at the master’s degree level. Students will want to ensure that the program meets their state’s licensure requirements. Topics explored within the program include ethics, theory, human development and career counseling.

    Mental Health Counseling

    Our mental health program prepares counselors to work in a variety of outpatient and inpatient settings such as independent practice, community agencies, managed behavioral health care settings, hospitals, employee assistance programs, and substance abuse treatment centers. Mental health counselors are trained to provide a full range of services such as assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, overview of types of interventions for individual, group, and family counseling, addictions related assessments and interventions, prevention programs, and crisis and disaster related management and interventions.

    The University of Wyoming Counselor Education Program is certified by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). This certification creates standards to ensure that students develop a professional counselor identity and master the knowledge and skills to practice effectively. CACREP is the major accrediting body for the counseling profession.

    What Does a School Counselor Do?

    A school counselor has a number of different job duties and responsibilities; perhaps more responsibilities than any other member of a school faculty. On any given day, these professionals will usually work closely with students, teachers, parents, and school administrators.

    Before becoming licensed, an aspiring school counselor will also usually need to complete a certain number of hours of supervised on the job training.

    According to the Bureau of labor Statistics, the median salary of all school and career counselors was $53,380 in 2011. Salaries vary by location and are often dictated by the budget of your school system.

    Programs of Assertive Community Treatment

    In order to expand mental health community services, the Mississippi Department of Mental Health has facilitated the formation of Programs of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) Teams in several areas of the state.

    What are PACT Teams?

    PACT is a person-centered, recovery-oriented mental health service delivery model for facilitating community living, psychological rehabilitation and recovery for persons who have the most severe and persistent mental illnesses and have not benefited from traditional outpatient services.

    PACT teams are mobile, delivering services to people in their homes and communities. This evidence-based program enables people to remain in their communities and reduce placements in inpatient environments. Evidence-based programs like PACT are essential to allowing people to stay in the communities of their choice and continue on their journeys of recovery.

    Who is on a PACT Team?

    Certified PACT Teams are required to employ a Certified Peer Support Specialist. Other PACT team members are from multidisciplinary backgrounds who share responsibility for addressing the needs of those served. The services they deliver are individually tailored to address each individual’s goals and preferences.

    Who can benefit from PACT Team services?

    PACT Teams are specifically for people who are living with serious mental illnesses and have had only limited success with staying in recovery through the use of traditional outpatient services. That includes people who are living with a disability due to their illness, who have difficulty in keeping follow-up appointments, and even those who have avoided their follow-up appointments or may feel they are not in need of any services.

    Since PACT Teams are mobile and deliver services to individuals in their own communities, they are available to provide services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    PACT Teams enable people to continue living in their own homes and communities while still receiving services they need. Clients of PACT teams have been shown to be more independent, have lower rates of unemployment, earn more income, enjoy more positive relationships and have a higher satisfaction with their lives. Studies have shown that clients of PACT Teams have lower rates of inpatient treatment. In cases where hospitalization was needed, the length of stay was shorter than individuals who had not participated in PACT.

    After a master’s degree is obtained, an LPC can pursue a counseling graduate certificate, which is available in a number of counseling specialties, including mental health and play therapy.     Master’s Degree in Counseling

    A Master of Arts in Counseling prepares students for careers in licensed professional counseling (LPC). These programs emphasize the treatment of emotional and mental disorders. During that same decade, jobs for substance abuse counselors are expected to increase by 22%, while jobs for school counselors are expected to see an 8% increase. As with job availability, salaries for counselors vary depending on specialization and education level, with rehabilitation counselors earning a median of $34,390 annually as of May 2015. Marriage and family therapists earned a median of $48,600 a year, according to the BLS in 2015.

    Continuing Education Information

    A number of professional organizations offer voluntary certification to LPCs. Most are specific to the area of specialization. Many counselors elect to obtain voluntary certification from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification or the National Board for Certified Counselors. Those who have obtained a master’s degree and licensure as professional counselors may decide to continue their educations. Many colleges and universities offer graduate certificates in counseling specializations.

    If you’re interested in becoming a licensed professional counselor, typically you first need a master’s degree. After graduating from a master’s degree program in counseling, individuals can enroll in a certification program to become an LPC.

    My school counseling lesson for 5th grade this week is all about transitioning to middle school. I really enjoy talking with my 5th grade friends about going to 6th grade. There are many things they are excited to experience, but there are also some things they are unsure about. This lesson simply serves as a time to discuss all the feelings they have about transitioning from elementary to middle school.

    To start the lesson, I gave each student a copy of the Middle School Transition form I created for discussion. The form has three feeling faces, and the students chose the one face that best describes how they feel about going to 6th grade. Next, they explained why they feel that way. The majority chose the smiley and straight face while very few chose the unhappy face. I asked several of the students to share with the class. Some of the reasons they stated were:

    I am excited to meet new friends.

    I don t have to stay in the same class all day.

    I get to choose electives.

    I m excited about meeting new friends, but I am going to miss my old friends who aren t going to my new school.

    The last statement is key for students in my district because it is very large. My 107 or so 5th graders are going to 15 different middle schools.

    After the students shared, I asked them to work with a partner to brainstorm lists of all the things they are excited about and all the things they are unsure about. The conversations I heard while walking throughout the classroom were interesting and seemed to be sincere thoughts about how they are feeling. After a few minutes, I asked them to share from their lists. As they shared, I squashed any myths and explained some things in further detail.

    Next, we watched a video I found on YouTube which was made at a school in Texas. Even though the video mentions some specifics about their particular schools and district, it worked perfectly for my lesson. It included both 5th graders and 6th graders. There are lots of great tips shared by staff members as well as students. The students in the video give advice and also share their fears about going to middle school. There were times during the video where I would pause for more discussion or to restate comments as they would relate to our school district.

    After the video, many of the students had thoughts to share about what they learned from watching the video such as how organization is important when it comes to keeping up with homework and assignments. We used the remainder of our time to discuss open house dates for the different middle schools and our 6th grade registration night.

    Over the next few weeks before our 6th grade registration night in April, I will hold lunch bunch groups for the individual middle schools. During these sessions, we will talk about information that is specific to each school and look at elective forms. I usually have about 6 groups for our 3 largest feeder schools and combine most of the rest into 1-2 more groups. Students leave with copies of the elective forms so they have time to think things through with their parents before they complete and sign the official paperwork in April.

    I am so thankful that you shared this worksheet and information Vanessa. It is something that I can use with my very immature 5th graders this year. We are a K-8 School, so the transition is a little different. They move up to the second floor of the building into the 6-8 wing, but it can be a dramatic transition for them. In the past (and this year there was no time) I would go into my 5th grade classes starting in January to conduct classroom lessons on things such as learning styles, how to study, gossip and rumors. etc. Then I would set up a day for current 6th graders to visit them and tell them what their experience was moving up to 6th grade and have a q a. Then in June, when 6-8 grade students were done, I d have a step-up day where the get to run thru an abbreviated 6th grade schedule. Teachers would be in the rooms to tell them what to expect in Sept. I will still attempt the step-up day because of it s value, but with lack of time, your sheet and suggestion of video would be great for me. Again, thanks for being willing to share with us.

    What Is School Counseling?

    A person’s school years are often very influential on the rest of his life. It is during these years that a child will grow into adolescence, then into his teenage years. During this time, a person will often further develop his personality, make and break friendships, and decide what he wants to do for the rest of his life.

    School, however, can also be a very stressful time in a person’s life. Students today have to worry about getting good test scores, completing copious amounts of homework on time, excelling in extracurricular activities, and getting along with their peers. Being pulled in so many directions and having this much on their plates can be very overwhelming for just about anyone, regardless of their age.

    Depending on his experiences, a person’s school years might be either the best years of his life, or the worst.

    School counseling, however, is a type of counseling that focuses on helping students make the best of their education. Professionals in this field are typically referred to as either school counselors or guidance counselors. They typically work with several different students over the course of a school year, and help them with a variety of different problems, from class scheduling to substance abuse.

    Today, school counselors are some of the most important and prominent members of a school’s faculty.     Why Do We Need School Counselors?

    While in school, it can be very easy to feel lost, confused, alone, and overwhelmed. School counselors, though, exist to help students through the maze of academia.

    The main goal of a school counselor is to help mold today’s young minds into tomorrow’s productive members of society. These professionals work with students on a daily basis in order to help them make the right decisions, meet challenges, and move in the right direction. Without school counselors, a large number of students might slip through the cracks as they struggle with academics or make less than wise decisions.

    What Does a School Counselor Do?

    A school counselor has a number of different job duties and responsibilities; perhaps more responsibilities than any other member of a school faculty. On any given day, these professionals will usually work closely with students, teachers, parents, and school administrators.

    Students are typically a school counselor’s first priority. In general, these professionals are trained to keep the best interests of each and every student in mind.

    A school counselor will often start by evaluating a student’s skills, strengths, weaknesses,career goals, and interests. From there, the counselor can then help the student choose which classes to take. The counselor is also usually responsible for creating each student’s class schedule, which needs to include all of the necessary classes that are required for graduation.

    Career counseling is also another important responsibility of a school counselor. These professionals can help students who are unsure of their career goals choose some possible careers that are right for them. They can also help students take courses and participate in activities that will help them get into good colleges or career programs after graduation.

    Social, behavioral, mental, and emotional problems are also often addressed by school counselors as well. For instance, school counselors will often help students who are struggling academically; being bullied by peers; abuse drugs or alcohol; or experiencing abuse or other problems at home. School counselors might also help students who are dealing with issues such as low self-esteem and time management.

    School counselors will also usually stay in close contact with the parents of each student. Parents are usually informed of any problems that students may be having in school, for example. School counselors may also send parents periodic progress reports and give them advice on how to help their children succeed in school and in life.

    Teachers may enlist the help of school counselors at times as well. They may ask for help with a problem student, for instance, or work with a school counselor to help a student with a particular problem. School counselors may also be asked to help with ho to discipline students as well.

    The advice and concerns of a school counselors are also usually taken into consideration when school administrators are creating or reorganizing school policies.

    Where Do School Counselors Work?

    As their title suggests, school counselors work in educational institutes of all types. They are employed at both public and private schools, from the elementary levels to college levels.

    What Are the Education Requirements to Become a School Counselor?

    In general, most school counselors begin their careers with a bachelor’s degree in areas such as counseling, education, or psychology. When pursuing a school counseling career, you’ll most likely also be required to earn at least a master’s degree in school counseling or education psychology.

    Before becoming licensed, an aspiring school counselor will also usually need to complete a certain number of hours of supervised on the job training.

    What Is the Median Annual Salary of a School Counselor?

    According to the Bureau of labor Statistics, the median salary of all school and career counselors was $53,380 in 2011. Salaries vary by location and are often dictated by the budget of your school system.
