The year 2009 proved to be another great year for the commercial truck financing industry. How commercial truck financing works is still dominated by modes of transport, Approximately 62% of the commercial truck finance portfolio is movable property. However, since then there has been a cycle of commercial truck sales going up and down. Now we are starting to see gradual increases as the market share of commercial finance truck, machinery and industrial equipment is coming back to life. Over the last year it rose from 30.8% to 32.3% and this increase is undoubtedly the result of a clear recovery in the economy, especially when it comes to financing commercial truck. The total value of commercial financing truck last year of all vehicles exceeded 12 million (about 37% more than last year), including cars and trucks amounted to about 13 million. In this group the highest proportion of truck sales came from financing commercial trucks, about 38.6% were heavy duty trucks. After four quarters of 2006 the value of financing commercial trucks was an estimated two billion and was 45% higher than 2005. The average value of a commercial truck financing loan was over 80 thousand.
Easy commercial truck financing is currently the fastest growing subgroup of the leasing market of road transport. Last year, over 22% of used commercial truck financing was financed through the form of leasing and the total value of financing for commercial trucks was up by an estimated 58% higher than in the last few years. These are very good results for heavy commercial truck financing. This confirms that the leases are getting better while commercial truck financing rates remain the same. The leasing sector in the market of bad commercial credit financing truck sales and service is continuing to gain popularity among most companies, especially in Tampa fl commercial truck financing is rapidly growing amongst fleet management services.
The top companies on the leasing market of financing low commercial truck loans remain relatively low because only 10 percent increases of profit were recorded in the commercial truck loans and financing segment. According to members of the Association of leasing companies the development of the industry can use government funds to help with bad commercial credit financing truck. The high demand for owner operators is constantly growing, however it is estimated that 70 percent of owner operators do not have good credit. Owner operators are the force driving the industry that is why there has to be some form of guaranteed commercial truck financing.
In 2006, banks that specialized in bad credit commercial truck financing lent approximately 8 billion for the purchase of over 298.3 thousand trucks. The financial result is better than that of 2005 by 2.3% and means that fewer banks sold loans (-4.4%). The average value of commercial truck financing bad credit in 2006 was 50,000 and is almost 2.5 times less than the average amount granted for car leasing. There are 2 reasons for this disparity. First, customers of banks much more often choose a mixed option (cash + credit) to finance your vehicle which is greater than leasing on its own. Second, banks have in their portfolio a significant amount of repossessed trucks that qualify for inhouse financing on commercial trucks. They are much cheaper than new ones – for example in the case of the transfer in October by Fortis Bank and fifth in the ranking of 100% share of credit provided was for repossessed trucks.
On the market for direct financing for commercial trucks most lenders guaranteed financing on commercial trucks and successfully introduced more than 10 different promotions for new vehicles. Some of them are dedicated to selected partners while others are open for everyone.
According to the very optimistic forecasts of commercial truck financing for bad credit sales of new trailers and trucks, including the value of their loan should be much higher than the prior year. This is mainly because too many loans were given out. A similar dynamics of growth of credit share of funding should demonstrate that bruised credit commercial truck financing is still possible, since there is no clear evidence that repossessions fell sharply and rose. Despite this, 2010 promises to be very interesting because the presidents of the largest banks, non-automotive corporations, announced a fierce competition for the lead in the market for owner operator commercial truck financing. Remember that competition is the best guarantee of high quality low price, namely the cost of credit. So it appears that they will be more accessible and hopefully give owner operators a lower interest. Taking into consideration the total number of all credit type commercial truck financing applicants that apply for loans is steadily rising, by next year there should be more commercial truck leasing financing programs because the average time for commercial financing leasing trailer truck is 36 months.

Zafira not starting, ignition goes on, but no clicks from starter FIXED 14th Jul 12 at 5:23 PM

Wife’s Zafira is not starting again.
The last 2 times this happened it was the starter, replaced and all was OK.

The difference between the last 2 times and this time is that the solenoid on the starter is not clicking (still clicking before)
And when I took the starter off it was still free. (was jammed before)

Also checked the old starter at the 2 live connections while off the car.
    1) starter starts to spin OK
    2) the solenoid clicks OK

Tried a new starter anyway but same symptoms.

The other symptoms is that the central locking is sluggish, and feels like the battery is quite low – however same symptoms as when the starter did go previously.
When trying to start all the dashboard lights go out. (or is that normal)

I have checked the earth wire from the starter to the battery earth and no resistance – so OK here
The battery was tested with Gunson’s Start check battery tester and was 75-100% so seems OK here too.
Battery has been smart charged anyway just in case.

It would appear that the solenoid is not getting power to get the starter spinning.

Any mechanics here that know what to check now, or what the likely cause is ?

    Glad you like it!

If your dash lights are going out and theres barely enough juice to activate the central locking, while I’d check all major connections, I’d bet the battery is just about to give up the ghost.
Modern batteries appear to be all or nothing and can go off very suddenly.
Check the voltage across the battery terminals and if its less than 10.5 – 11 volts, it’s very tired. Get it started with a jump, check across the terminals again and make sure it’s at least 13v with the engine running, ideally around 14-14.5 volts to make sure the alternator is fine. Anything higher is just as much a problem too!

    Glad you like it!

    Users saying Thanks (1)

It ended up being the battery – a shorted cell.

What threw me was that it initially was showing OK.
After charging it was not showing OK and 10.6 volts
I checked it an hour later to confirm readings and checked out OK with around 12.5 volts – so intermittent readings.

So wasted my time and effort changing the starter motor twice, and that’s not easy to do on a Zafira.

    Glad you like it!

    What is a credit score? #credit #score

    What is a credit score?

    Table of contents

Your credit score can mean the difference between being denied or approved for credit, and a low or high interest rate. A good score can help you qualify for an apartment rental and even help you get utilities connected without a deposit.

    What is it?

Your credit score is a three-digit number generated by a mathematical algorithm using information in your credit report. It’s designed to predict risk, specifically, the likelihood that you will become seriously delinquent on your credit obligations in the 24 months after scoring.

There are a multitude of credit-scoring models in existence, but there’s one that dominates the market: the FICO credit score. According to myFICO.com, the consumer website for the FICO score developer, “90 percent of all financial institutions in the U.S. use FICO scores in their decision-making process.”

FICO scores range from 300 to 850, where a higher number indicates lower risk. What’s a good score?

A consumer has three FICO scores, one for each credit report provided by the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Unfortunately, consumers currently have access to only their Equifax and TransUnion FICO scores. Experian ended its agreement with myFICO.com in 2009.

What goes into a credit score?

Data from your credit report goes into five major categories that make up a FICO score. The scoring model weighs some factors more heavily, such as payment history and debt owed.

    Elements of your credit score

Payment history: (35 percent) — Your account payment information, including any delinquencies and public records.

Amounts owed: (30 percent) — How much you owe on your accounts. The amount of available credit you’re using on revolving accounts is heavily weighted.

Length of credit history: (15 percent) — How long ago you opened accounts and time since account activity.

Types of credit used: (10 percent) — The mix of accounts you have, such as revolving and installment.

New credit: (10 percent) — Your pursuit of new credit, including credit inquiries and number of recently opened accounts.

Personal or demographic information such as age, race, address, marital status, income and employment don’t affect the score.

Different score impact for same missteps

How much does a specific change affect a credit score? The answer is usually “it depends,” and for good reason. Credit score developers don’t reveal the exact point deductions. The weight of any given activity can also vary for different credit histories.

Within a scoring model, there’s more than one formula used to calculate a score, and each formula is designed for a category of consumers with similar credit profiles. The information in your credit report determines which formula is used. If you are new to credit, for instance, the scoring model will put you into a category for people with young credit histories, and use a scoring formula specific to that group. Such groups are called scorecards. Within that group, recent inquiries may cost more points than they would for a different group.

How to check your credit score

Federal law mandates the consumer’s right to a free credit report annually from each credit reporting agency, but not to a free credit score. Use our FICO score estimator to get your score range free of charge. To get your exact number, you have to purchase it from a score provider, such as myFICO.com or one of the reporting agencies.

Had Your Credit Card Hacked Lately?

My credit card information was just stolen — again. This is the fifth time in the past three years, which, if polling my Facebook friends is any indication, is about par for the course. It happens to everyone, it seems, about once every nine months. And for the record, each time I was hacked, my credit card was still physically in my possession.

There’s no need to tell you what a pain in the ass this is, but I will anyway. You have to switch all direct billings from the old card to a new card — and you invariably forget a few which means you get dinged with late fees. You also have to update all those online shopping sites where you have your credit card info stored. And of course you have to check all three credit scoring sites to see if the theft is causing you any lingering damage. In terms of inconvenience, credit card theft is just one Dante circle removed from losing your whole wallet and having to cancel and replace everything.

The good news is that none of my five thefts have cost me a penny, for which I am very grateful. And in four of the five instances, it was Chase — my credit card provider — that discovered the fraud and told me about it. I hadn’t had a clue.

In all five cases, Chase closed my account, issued me a new one on the spot and sent me new cards overnight. I get the idea that they have an Amazon-size warehouse full of customer service reps who do nothing all day but close accounts that have been infiltrated by thieves.

In my most recent theft, most of the charges were made in Tokyo and they included a dating app, some junk food bought in a mini-mart, and a bunch of other small purchases. The way credit card thieves frequently work is to first test the waters with small purchases to see if they go undetected before they try to charge something larger — you know, felony-like larger. In my case, it was a stay in an expensive hotel in Beverly Hills. Nope, I told the helpful Chase rep, I’ve never been to Japan or an expensive hotel in Beverly Hills.

I can’t complain about Chase’s fraud detection unit; they seem to be right on top of things. But what I don’t get is why this keeps happening and why there doesn’t appear to be much of an effort to catch the bad guys. And I certainly don’t mean to single out Chase. Credit card fraud is an equal opportunity crime. No one is immune and it certainly doesn’t matter which lender you have although different cards hold you to different levels of liability.

Given the prevalence of the problem, where’s the prosecution? For the number of thefts to be this widespread, doesn’t it mean that people see this as a crime that’s easy to get away with?

The Nilson Report puts credit and debit card fraud at $11.27 billion in losses in 2012. That’s certainly nothing to sneeze at.

In fact, credit card fraud — along with national security as it relates to terrorism and identity theft — are the top two things we most worry about, says Unisys. Almost 40 percent of us were deeply concerned about the security of shopping and banking online.

How are these thieves doing it? Sometimes they just outfox you, technologically. They install skimmers in ATMs or at gas station pumps when no one is around that record credit card information surreptitiously. The information is later resold to criminals who create counterfeit
cards or charge items over the phone or the Internet.

Other times, though, it is simply you being careless. So what can you do about it (besides paying cash for everything)?

    1. Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder when you are paying with a credit card in stores. The Department of Justice’s website says that this is a still a common way to steal credit card numbers. It’s easy to get distracted.

    2. Lower your voice, or better yet, keep your mouth shut.
Limit what you say on your mobile phone in public. Thieves get ahold of people’s credit card numbers by listening to cardholders’ conversations with hotel or rental car companies, according to the Department of Justice. Instead of holding those conversations within earshot, move to a quiet place. Never recite your credit card information in a busy lobby or from the back of a cab.

    3. Get a home shredder.
Yes, it’s come to that. Destroy every check and credit card or bank statement before throwing them in the trash. Some thieves are dumpster divers, says the DOJ. It only takes one stray receipt to give a criminal all the access he or she needs.

    4. Watch where you eat.
Dishonest wait staff have been known to use hidden or handheld devices to copy your credit card for later counterfeiting. They are often tied to a local crime ring, or seasonal and transient workers, said KrebsonSecurity.com .

    Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Visa Signature® Card Review

    Large bonus for Hilton hotels

The Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Visa Signature® Card is the best way to earn bonus points at Hilton Hotels. Cardholders will earn an amazing six points per dollar spent at hotels in the Hilton Worldwide Portfolio. This portfolio consists of several luxury, full-service and focused-service hotel chains. If you find yourself on the road often and prefer hotels associated with the Hilton family, you ll find your bonus points will pile up quickly.

    Great introductory bonus

The Hilton HHonors™ card will reward cardholders with 40,000 points if you spend $1,000 in the first four months of card ownership. Introductory bonuses are fairly common with travel rewards credit cards, but when compared to other competitor cards, the large number of bonus points, low spending requirements, and relatively long time allotted to meet the conditions make the Hilton HHonors™ bonus particularly attractive.

    Diverse ways to earn points

In addition to the high number of bonus points associated with staying at Hilton hotels, the Hilton HHonors™ card offers competitive bonuses connected with other purchases. Cardholders will appreciate earning three points for every dollar spent at supermarkets, drugstores, and gas stations, and two points per dollar on every other purchase. Some rewards cards limit the ways you can earn bonus points to very specific products. With the HHonors™ credit card, your earning options are much more diverse.

    No annual fee

With all of the bonus rewards options offered by the HHonors™ card, a high annual fee could probably be justified, but one of the great features of the Hilton HHonors™ credit card is that there is no annual fee. If you re looking for a travel credit card with competitive rewards and no annual fee, the HHonors™ card will be a strong candidate.

    Visa Signature® benefits

Holders of the Hilton HHonors™ card are eligible to receive all the additional benefits associated with the Visa Signature® card. These far-reaching benefits include things like roadside assistance, lost luggage insurance, travel insurance, fraud protection, emergency assistance, and more.

    The Bad

    Limited redemption options

Although the Hilton HHonors™ card does offer great travel-related redemption benefits like hotels, airfare, and car rentals, when compared with other travel rewards cards, the redemption options fall a bit short. Some competitor cards offer more comprehensive rewards that include travel, as well as things like cash back and gift cards.

    Foreign currency transaction fee

For a rewards card that promotes travel, you might be surprised to find fees associated with foreign currency transactions. The HHonors™ card does come with a 3% transaction fee on all foreign currency transactions. Although this may not be a deal-breaker, it is definitely something to consider if you find yourself traveling internationally on a regular basis.

    Private Label Credit Card

What is a ‘Private Label Credit Card’

A private label credit card is a store-branded credit card that can only be used at that store. A private-label credit card is a type of revolving credit plan managed by a bank or commercial finance company for either retail or wholesale manufacturers, such as department and specialty stores. Private label credit cards do not carry a credit card logo such as Visa or Mastercard and cannot be used with other merchants.

The private label credit program allows retailers to offer more lenient and extended terms to customers than they could otherwise. Many stores offer private label credit cards to their customers to encourage them to spend more by offering the convenience of a credit card and deferred payment. In addition, when a customer makes a purchase with a private label credit card, they will usually earn loyalty rewards, such as a discount on a future purchase. In this way, a private label credit card can encourage repeat business and customer loyalty. Private label cards can also make shopping more convenient for customers through features such as receiptless returns.

BREAKING DOWN ‘Private Label Credit Card’

If a third party. such as a bank, manages a private-label credit program for a retailer or manufacturer, it will perform several functions. These include the issuance of cards, funding of credit and the collection of payments from customers. The criteria for credit are jointly established by the service provider and the retailer.

Private label credit cards are similar to other credit cards in that they charge interest if you carry a balance, charge a fee if your payment is late and have a grace period if you don’t carry a balance. They are also similar to other credit cards in that while private label credit cards do not carry a payment processor’s logo, they are still backed by a payment processor such as Visa. The payment processor makes it easy for stores to offer private label credit cards by offering cards that work with the store’s existing terminals and point-of-sale equipment.

Target is one of many retailers that offers a private label credit card as of 2014. Called the RedCard, it gives consumers 5% off all purchases at the point of sale. free shipping on all online purchases and an extra 30 days on top of the usual 90-day return window to get a refund for unwanted purchases. Similarly, Nordstrom offers a private label credit card that gives customers $20 off a $100 purchase on the day they apply plus points on each purchase that can be redeemed for future discounts. Target and Nordstrom also each offer Visa cards that offer store-specific benefits and can be used anywhere Visa is accepted.

How to Rebuild Your Credit After Bankruptcy — Fast

It’s about as popular as a root canal or a blown tire on the freeway. Yet like both of those dreaded occurrences, filing for bankruptcy is commonplace in modern America. In 2013 1,107,699 individuals and businesses in the U.S. had to file for bankruptcy according to government data. While it’s pretty safe to say that not many of the folks who filed for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy were eager to do it, it’s worth remembering that bankruptcy is by no means a financial death sentence.

After all, bankruptcy protection is designed to provide people and companies with a way to discharge at least some of their debts and start over. And one of the very first steps to reboot your financial life involves rebuilding your credit score.

How Bankruptcy Affects Your Credit Score

There’s no sugarcoating the fact that any individual who has to file for bankruptcy is going to see a negative impact on their credit score. This matters because lenders rely on credit scores – which typically range from 300 on the low end to a maximum of 850 – to determine whether or not to offer you a mortgage or car loan and, if they do, at what interest rate. Put another way, a credit score is a quick way for lenders to decide how risky it is to loan you money.

Not surprisingly, a bankruptcy — which, by definition, allows someone to not repay all of their debts — hammers your credit score. How much it hurts depends on where you started. According to the Fair Isaac Corporation, which is better known as FICO and the best-known company that calculates credit scores, someone with a stellar score of 780 would see their rating plummet to between 540 and 560 after declaring bankruptcy. A person with a starting score of around 680 can expect to drop between 150 and 180 points, to between 500 and 530, after a bankruptcy. You can take a look at the credit profiles of the two people used in the FICO example here.

What does this all mean? In short, bankruptcy is a major red flag to lenders, a fact that is reflected in your credit score. In April of 2014 FICO reported that its median score was 711. Scores of 550 or lower are considered “deep subprime” by lenders and carry with them high interest rates – if you can get a loan at all.

Rebuilding Your Credit to Improve your Financial Health

Fortunately, a bankruptcy is by no means game over for your financial life. There are steps you can take to begin rebuilding your credit and, eventually, your overall financial health. “Bankruptcy is a very difficult and emotional time since there are severe consequences, but it also represents a chance to “start over” from a financial sense,” says Bill Harddekopf. CEO at LowCards.com.

According to Hardekopf, the road back to financial well being starts with rebuilding your credit score. “One of the first things to do is to get a free copy of your credit report, which you are able to do once a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Check this for errors. Make sure you also determine your FICO credit score and work diligently to build up this score each month.”

Raising your score, says Hardekopf, is all about getting back to basics. “Pay your bills on time. Don’t spend more than you can afford. Get a credit card that reports to the credit reporting agencies and pay off the entire balance each month so you don’t incur any interest charges–this will help slowly build your credit score.”

Gerri Detweiler, author of Debt Collection Answers. How to Use Debt Collection Laws to Protect Your Rights, counsels that it’s important to avoid the urge to steer clear from credit after a bankruptcy. “Unfortunately, many people avoid credit afterward, which is understandable, but doesn’t help the situation,” she says. Instead, Detweiler says to focus on responsibly repaying any loans — such as a car or student loan — that may have survived bankruptcy. “Continue to pay them on time. You may also want to get a secured credit card. Use it for one purchase a month (your cell phone bill for example) and pay it off right away, and it will provide a valuable credit reference,” she says. “I’ve seen consumers boost their credit scores by 50-75 points or more in one or two years using this approach.”

Ways to Improve Your Credit After a Bankruptcy: A Checklist

As both Detweiler and Hardekopf make clear, being proactive about rebuilding your credit score after a bankruptcy is a must. Here are some other ways to take an active role in reinvigorating your financial health post-bankruptcy:

Know your credit score — Many people put this one off, because it can be painful. You know your credit score is low so does it really matter how low? Yes, it does. Get a copy of your credit report and know your score. Review it for any inaccuracies and make note of your debts. Only then can you come up with a plan to pay off your debts and improve your credit. WisePiggy.com is a great resource to get your score truly for free (without having to enter your credit card number).

Open a new bank account — Opening a new checking and savings account will demonstrate financial stability. It can also give you a fresh slate to practice good financial habits. When you open your account, talk to the banker about signing up for automatic online bill pay. This will ensure that your bills are paid on time, which is a major factor in good credit.

Apply for a secured credit card — If big credit card bills led to your bankruptcy, you may feel like this is a terrible idea. Why go down that path again? The best answer is that secured credit cards are one of the easiest ways to build credit and improve credit scores. Compare interest rates of different cards, so you can select a card with the best rate and a low annual fee. A rate around 15% is good and an annual fee less than $30 is desirable.

Get a gas card or a retail card — Gas and retail credit cards will also improve your credit. If you drive a car, you will have to purchase gas. You should make those purchases work for you. Gas and retail cards typically don’t require applicants to have good credit and, in fact, cater to folks with blemished credit.

Pay off your balance in full every month — While you are reestablishing your credit, it’s critical to pay off your full balance every month. This demonstrates to creditors that you are not a risk. Timely payments also have a significant impact on your credit score.

Continue to monitor your credit score — Check your credit score regularly (monthly is ideal) while you are actively improving your credit. Watching that number go up can make you feel like your hard work is really paying off.

Finally, it’s also important to remember to be patient throughout this process. A bankruptcy can impact your credit for as long as 10 years. But the more active a role you take and the sooner you get started, the quicker you can bounce back from bankruptcy. The bottom line is avoid a bankruptcy if at all possible, but if you have to file, then know there is hope. Good luck and please share any tips or feedback you might have below!

Not having a Social Security number is a serious stumbling block when you want to apply for a credit card. since most financial institutions strongly prefer that you supply one on your application. However, there are ways to get a credit card without a Social Security number.

    An alternative identification number

Although credit card issuers almost always ask for your Social Security number on your application, you’re “generally not required” to provide one if you don’t have one, according to the Social Security Administration.

In general, only U.S. citizens and noncitizens authorized to work in the U.S. are eligible for a Social Security number. Others can obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, which follows the same nine-digit format as a Social Security number (XXX-XX-XXXX) and can be used in place of one on credit card applications. You can obtain an ITIN regardless of your immigration status.

You ll need more than a number for approval

Simply having a taxpayer ID number to put on a credit card application isn t enough to guarantee that you ll be approved. Credit card issuers will also look at your credit history, and that creates an entirely different challenge.

If you don t have a Social Security number, it s most likely because you re not an American citizen. Even if you had a positive credit history in your country of origin, foreign credit history can’t be transferred to the United States. As far as American credit card issuers are concerned, you have no credit history at all.

You may need to start building your U.S. credit history by applying for a secured credit card. With these cards, you provide a deposit, usually $200 or more, that the issuer holds in case you don t pay your bill. In most cases, your deposit becomes your credit limit — put down a $500 deposit, for example, and your credit limit is $500. There are also a few companies that offer credit cards specifically for recent immigrants and international students.

    Good behavior means good credit

Can you even begin to build credit without a Social Security number? The answer is yes. The credit bureaus will use other information about you, such as your name, address and birth date, to gather information about your credit activity all in one place.

To build good credit, you’ll need to show positive payment history over time. This means making regular purchases and paying off your balance on time every month.

It takes about six months of credit activity for a FICO credit score to be created. Once you have a FICO score — the score most commonly used by lenders to determine your creditworthiness — you may find a wider variety of credit cards available to you. You could move up to an unsecured credit card (one that doesn t require a deposit) and eventually cards that offer juicy rewards .

How to Get a Hard Money Loan Approval

Hard money loans are generally lent to borrowers to finance real estate investment opportunities or other collateral backed loans; they are funded by private investors as opposed to banks. A hard money loan might be an appropriate option if you do not have a high enough credit score to secure a loan from a bank. They are generally used as “bridge” loans between construction financing and long term loans; hard money loans are often used for construction because longterm lenders may want finished and leased projects. Be aware that hard money lenders are not regulated by the Federal Reserve or the Office of Thrift Supervision. Therefore, the application process can be very different from a traditional loan from a bank.

    Steps Edit

    Part One of Three:
Finding a Reliable Hard Lender Edit

Research appropriate hard lenders in your area. If you are looking for a hard lender because you have been rejected by a bank, then you might be tempted to run to the first hard lender you can find to get your loan quickly. Resist this temptation and do your research first. Some hard lenders are genuinely interested in helping you finance your real estate project, but others are little more than loan sharks. [1] Ask yourself some of the following questions as you are assessing potential lenders:

    • Does this lender have a legitimate web site? Many hard lenders have web sites that are designed to simply gather your information before passing it along to a third party. Avoid these kinds of sites. [2]
    • Is the lender in good standing with its investors? Does the lender have any pending lawsuits from its investors over bad loans or foreclosed properties? If it it does, this can be a warning as to the financial health of the lender.
    • What types of projects has this lender financed in the past? For example, a lender who finances hospitality projects will not generally be comfortable with medical facility loans.
    • Does the lender have a staff member that you can meet and contact? Some hard lenders operate nationally, but you might prefer to find one who operates in your state locally. Many hard lenders will want to see the property you are planning to purchase firsthand.

Consider the pros and cons of accepting a hard money loan. Hard money loans are designed to be short-term investments, generally lasting 12 months. Will you be able to refinance this loan in that time frame? [3]

    • Hard money loans also have higher interest rates than long-term loans; their interest rates generally range between 12 and 20 percent. Hard money loans will also include fees and closing costs that must be covered by the borrower.

Evaluate the time frame for your loan. Hard money loans are generally granted far more quickly than bank loans. Most banks take longer due to the various requirements for information and the underwriting process, but private lenders can generally grant the loan within two weeks (if not sooner). If you need to finance a real estate project quickly, then a hard money loan can be a good option for you.

    Part Two of Three:
Applying for a Hard Money Loan Edit

Present the potential value of the property you want to purchase. In a hard money loan, you are financed based on the collateral value of the property, not your personal credit score. That means you will need to present documents such as architectural plans for the property, detailed budgets for construction, and your contractor bid sheets for repairs and renovations. [4] Note that these can apply to commercial projects as well as home buyers.

    • Hard money loans are sometimes given to first time home buyers, but they are commonly granted to developers who want to buy a property and then immediately sell it or refinance it. Hard money lenders want to know that the property and the location are a safe investment.
    • Be prepared to prove the value of the neighborhood and your particular property; what is the price of similar properties in this area? What is the history of the market in this neighborhood? What are its projections for growth? You should have this data available to show your lenders. Websites such as www.zillow.com, www.trulia.com and www.realtor.com can help you find this kind of information.
    • Having a history as a real estate developer will also help your chances for being approved. Show your lenders how you have succeeded in real estate projects in the past.

Present a clear financial plan for your home project. Many hard money lenders will fund 60 – 70% of the after-repair-value (ARV) of the home; you will be responsible for funding the additional 30 – 40% of the additional cost. If you have this cash on hand, that will increase your chances of being approved for the loan. If you do not have the money to cover the additional 30 – 40% of the home’s value, then the lender might put a lien on another property that you own. [5]

    • Most lenders will prefer that you have 30 – 40% of the additional cost in hand rather than using another loan or a credit card to finance the difference.
    • This generally applies to individual homes, not to large commercial projects.

Prepare additional documentation. Although most lenders are concerned with the value of the property you want to buy, they may also ask for your personal financial information. This might include documents such W-2s, paystubs, bank statements and other items in your credit history. You should be prepared to present all of this information to your lenders.

Protect yourself legally. Before you sign any paperwork from a hard money lender, review the terms of the loan with your lawyer. Private investors are subjected to very few regulations, so you should make sure your legal interests are protected.

    • If your lender does not disclose any additional fees that might be included in the loan during your repayment schedule, this is a red flag. Be sure to ask if the loan agreement includes all fees. If they also do not include a detailed repayment schedule (including how much interest will accrue and how much of your payment will go toward the interest), then this is also a warning that it might be a bad loan. [6]
    • Speak with your lawyer about the loan’s impact on your personal liability. This not always required, depending upon project and the net worth of the borrowing entity, such as a corporation.

Remain in constant contact with your lender. Hard money lenders want to see that you’re interested in this loan. Return calls promptly and give them the information they need in a timely manner. Hard money lenders keep less capital on hand than banks. If you delay in getting back to a hard money lender, they may lend their assets to another borrower.

Debit Credit Card Skimming Fraud How to Avoid Card Skimming Devices

I decided to listen to the voice message before we went in for the show. As I heard the words your bank account has suspicious activity on it, I got a little worried but figured Bank of America simply didn t like one of the transactions we had made earlier. So, I quickly took a look at our checking account transactions on the Bank of America iPhone app. That s when my stomach shot up into my throat and my heart started racing. I saw two $1,000 deductions from our account for a shady sounding website that we definitely didn t buy anything from. Our bank account had been compromised, and we were devastated.

The bank told us that the transactions were made using my debit card number. However, the strange thing is that my debit card number was never lost or stolen. Luckily, Bank of America was great about the whole situation and, since you are never liable for unauthorized transactions in your bank account. the money was put back in our account within three business days.

No one ever confirmed this, but given the number of incidences in Orlando over the past year, I am convinced that my debit card was skimmed. I can t pinpoint where exactly it happened, but I have no other explanation since we rarely buy things online, and no websites have our debit card number stored.

    How Card Skimming Happens

Here are four of the most likely ways that your credit or debit card can be skimmed:

    1. ATMs An ATM skimming device is used and fits over the real ATM card reader slot. ATM users do not know their information is being intercepted as their card is inserted into the false reader.
    2. Gasoline Pumps This skimming device is installed inside a gas pump in minutes and is not visible to users. A gas pump key can fit pump housings in multiple stations, allowing for quick and easy access. I think this could have been where my card was skimmed. I get gas in a lot of tourist areas around Orlando where criminals are more likely to go after the pumps.
    3. Handheld Devices Someone can take your credit card and quickly record the information with a swipe on these small devices. There were two different cases in Orlando recently of waitresses at restaurants swiping cards with these handheld machines. They were being paid a nominal, flat fee for every card they recorded by a middle man who was then selling them on the black market for big money. Think about it, when you send your credit or debit card off with a restaurant server, it s one of the only times your card is out of your sight and not in your possession.
    4. Keystroke Loggers This device can be attached to public-use computers, like those found at the library, or credit card point-of-sale devices to record passwords and other personal data. They can also be downloaded onto your computer as malicious spyware.

Maybe I am being a little paranoid. I could never actually confirm that my card was skimmed. However, through researching credit card skimming in Orlando, I found quite a few instances of people caught targeting areas near where I live and work.

    How to Avoid Skimming Fraud

I am convinced that this crime is a real threat. If you agree, here are some tips on how to avoid being a victim of credit card skimming and, ultimately, identity theft and financial fraud.

    • Go to the Bank Window If you re going to a bank during office hours, go into the bank and make a withdrawal, or drive up to the teller window rather than taking money out at the ATM.
    • Get Cash Back Take advantage of the ability to get cash back at a grocery store instead of taking money out at an ATM.
    • Pay Inside for Gas Paying for gas at the pump is convenient, but not convenient enough to risk your credit card information. Opt to pay inside rather than using the machine outside. It ll only take a couple more minutes.
    • Pay Cash Make an effort to carry cash and use it more often at gas stations and restaurants .
    • Ask for the Manager Don t be shy about requesting that your credit or debit card be run by a manager at a restaurant. Protecting your personal financial information is far too important to worry about offending people.
    • Keep Shopping and Banking on Your Private Computer Avoid doing any online shopping or banking on public use computers. If you ever do have to use a public computer for these transactions, clear the cache, cookies, and history afterward, just to be safe.

    Final Thought

Credit card skimming can be devastating to your personal finances. I was lucky that my bank notified me quickly and was willing to work with me to counter the false charges to my card. I m sure others have lost far more to this latest trend in credit card fraud and identity theft. Make sure that you are doing everything in your power to protect yourself.

4 Ways to Get a Cell Phone Plan With No Credit Check

4 Ways to Get a Cell Phone Plan With No Credit Check

Cell phones have practically become an extension of our bodies — they’re our phones, computers, cameras, watches, alarm clocks, game systems and more. But getting one can be difficult if you don’t have credit.

Carriers want to avoid customers racking up huge bills and then not paying them. To this end, many major cell phone companies will check your credit to evaluate your financial responsibility and ability to pay each month.

If you have bad credit or no credit history, you may have to jump through some extra hoops, but you can get a cell phone with no credit check.

    1. Go with a prepaid carrier

Prepaid cell phone plans don’t require a credit check. That’s because you pay in advance for your service, usually on a monthly basis, so there s no risk for the cell phone provider. The four major carriers — Verizon, AT T, Sprint and T-Mobile — offer prepaid plans, often for less than their traditional plans.

One downside: Because there is no commitment with a prepaid plan, you can’t pay for your phone in installments like you would with a traditional plan. The price can range from less than $1 to more than $500, depending on the phone you choose. But you may be able to avoid the upfront cost of a new phone by using your existing one.

    2. Join a family plan

Most carriers offer family cell phone plans. and some let you have as many as 10 lines on one plan. Although the main account holder must pass a credit check to establish service, those using the additional lines do not. The main account holder is also the one ultimately responsible if you don’t pay your bill, so take care not to miss any payments.

If you do join a family plan, you won’t just bypass a credit check, you may also save some money. Traditional individual plans start at $40 to $50, depending on the carrier, but a family plan split four ways can run as low as $25 per person, before taxes, fees and add-ons like insurance.

    3. Pay a security deposit

You can often get a cell phone plan with no credit history if you first pay a deposit. Deposit amounts will vary based on the carrier and your credit score, but they could run up to several hundreds of dollars. And deposits are generally per line, so if you want multiple phones on your account you will pay multiple deposits. Most carriers will refund your deposit after a year if you consistently pay your bill on time.

    4. Find a co-signer

Similar to getting a personal loan with bad credit. you can often get a cell phone plan with bad or no credit if you have a co-signer with good credit. Unlike a personal loan, however, the account would be in the co-signer’s name, meaning that person is on the hook if you don’t pay your bill.

The co-signer can eventually move the account into your name. Most carriers will run your credit when you do so, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to pay a deposit. With T-Mobile, for example, you can usually move the account into your name after 60 days. Although the carrier will check your credit, it won’t require a deposit because the account is already open. Just keep in mind that each carrier handles this differently.

    You have options

A prepaid plan is often your best bet if you want a cell phone plan but have no credit or bad credit. If the upfront expense of a phone is too much, though, try joining a family plan. That way you can share the plan cost while you work to build your credit enough so you can venture out on your own plan.

NerdWallet has partnered with BillShark, a company that can help save you money by negotiating your bills for you. If BillShark determines that you re already getting the best rates, there s no cost to you.

DO IT YOURSELF AND SAVE MONEY TODAY

Is the interior of your cars plastic scratched. Having scratches on the interior plastic or vinyl of your car can be ugly. Especially if you are going to be selling it. Many times by moving things in and out of your car, scratching of the plastic interior can occur. There are different methods to repairing and fixing this yourself. Most involve sanding the plastic, painting the plastic, and heating the plastic.

One of the easiest ways to fix this fast is to go to an auto salvage yard and find the same exact car as yours. With any luck you can find the exact piece of door panel plastic in the exact color. We have done this many times with doors, bumpers, mirrors, and dashboards. However, if using an auto salvage yard is not possible, then see below for how to fix this without replacing the plastic.

To repair the scratched plastic on your car interior WITHOUT A KIT:

STEP 1: Clean the plastic surface to remove any dirt or debris.

STEP 2: Using a heat gun. put the heat to about half and warm the scratched surface until it is soft and mushy. NOTE: Make sure you do not overheat the plastic as you WILL burn it.

STEP 3: Apply a grain pad (around $7 dollars) to the plastic surface as this will re-texture the plastic. NOTE: Be careful when doing this step as the plastic will be very HOT!

STEP 4: After applying the grain pad, let the plastic cool and sand with superfine sandpaper to smooth it out if needed.

TIP: If the plastic has faded, you can purchase special types of dyes that are made just for car plastic.

Another way of fixing the scratched plastic is to use a kit. A car interior plastic scratch remover kit will cost around $40 to $50 depending on different factors. The best scratch remover kit we have used is from Scratch Wizard and came with everything needed to fix the scratches in the plastic.

To repair the scratched plastic on your car interior WITH A KIT:

STEP 1: Sand the scratched plastic with 220-240 fine grit sandpaper.

STEP 2: Apply the included activator to the scratch.

STEP 3: Sand again with 220-240 fine grit sandpaper.

STEP 4: Clean with the supplied cleaner.

STEP 5: Apply multiple coats of the factory color matched dye included with the kit.

NOTE: A heat gun accelerates the drying process.

This Scratch Wizard kit can be used on plastic, vinyl, or leather in your car s interior. More info on the kit here .

A scratch removal kit from ScratchWizard will include 11 oz. factory-matched vinyl, leather, and plastic dye in aerosol spray can. 4 oz. vinyl, leather, and plastic cleaner, scuff pad, superglue and activator, 220 grit sandpaper, and video instructions.

    Learn About Credit Scores

What are credit scores, and how are they different from credit reports?

Credit scores are three-digit “scores” that show how responsible you’ve been in paying off credit cards, mortgages, car loans, and other lines of credit. The three credit bureaus TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian use the information in your credit report to calculate your credit scores.

Credit reports provide the information the bureaus use to calculate your credit score. They list, among other things, your reported on-time, delinquent, and missed payments. (To see what else they contain, check out the “Learn More About Credit Reports” section below.)

How do you know if your credit scores are good?

Along with your free credit scores, FreeScore offers you an analysis of where your scores are relative to others. FreeScore‘s credit score estimator measures your scores against those of the general population and assigns you a grade A, B, C, etc. according to where you stand in comparison to others.

What is a good credit score?

Generally speaking, a credit score of 750 or higher is considered good that is, lenders will consider you a lower risk of defaulting on a line of credit. While the cut-off line for “good” scores is subject to change, the higher your score is, the better your chances are to secure a loan or other line of credit at a desirable interest rate.

    What are credit score ranges?

The range of credit scores differs from bureau to bureau but in general, they range from a low in the 300s to a high in the mid-800s. Your scores can also differ from bureau to bureau because credit issuers aren’t required to report your credit transactions to all three bureaus; some of them may report your credit activity to only one or two of them. Regardless of the bureau, though, most people have credit scores somewhere between 500 and 800.

    Learn More About Credit Reports

What’s included in your credit report?

Your credit report contains a variety of information about you, including:

    • Your personal information name, current and previous addresses, Social Security number, past and current employers, and more

Should you expect to find errors in your credit reports?

Errors are commonly found in credit reports, due to input errors, incorrect reporting from credit issuers or merchants to the bureaus, or even identity theft events. The only way to determine whether your credit reports are accurate is to carefully review your reports from all three bureaus TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.

    What is AnnualCreditReport.com?

AnnualCreditReport.com is the government-mandated website through which you can order a free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus once every 12 months. Through AnnualCreditReport.com, you can order a credit report from each bureau at the same time, or you can stagger your requests throughout the year.

    Learn More About Credit Monitoring

    What is credit monitoring?

Credit monitoring is a service that alerts you whenever a change is made to the information in your credit files at one or more of the three credit bureaus. Triple-bureau monitoring obviously provides a more comprehensive overview of the changes being made in your credit files.

Changes that can trigger an alert include new addresses; new users being added to credit card accounts in your name; on-time, delinquent, or missed payments on accounts in your name; inquiries into your credit files made by third parties; and more.

For more information about credit monitoring, check out “How to Choose a Credit Monitoring Service.”

What can credit monitoring do for you?

Monitoring your credit can help you keep track of your credit activity, which is particularly useful if you’re planning to apply for a loan or line of credit in the foreseeable future. The sooner you’re alerted to errors that might harm your credit score, the quicker you can dispute them to protect your credit history and with it, your credit score.

Credit monitoring is also a good way to quickly detect suspicious or unauthorized activity within your credit records. Such activity is often a sign of identity theft, and the sooner you detect and react to identity theft, the more chance you have of limiting the damage it can inflict.

To learn more about the benefits of credit monitoring, check out “10 Reasons You Need a Credit Monitoring Service.”

Can you monitor your credit without using a service?

You can monitor your credit through AnnualCreditReport.com if you’d like. However, because creditors aren’t required to report your credit behavior to every credit reporting bureau, if a change occurs at one bureau after you’ve ordered your credit report from them, you won’t be aware of it for 12 months.

To learn more about monitoring your credit on your own, check out “What You Miss With Do-It-Yourself Credit Monitoring.”

Who are the three major credit bureaus?

    Updated November 27, 2016

Credit bureaus, or credit reporting agencies, are companies that collect and maintain consumer credit information then resell it to other businesses in the form of a credit report. There many credit reporting agencies, or credit bureaus, in the United States, but most people are familiar with the big three: Equifax. Experian. and TransUnion. These bureaus are all publicly-traded, for-profit companies who are not owned by the government.

The government does, however, have legislation, the Fair Credit Reporting Act. regarding how these and other credit bureaus should operate.

These credit bureaus have relationships with many banks, credit card issuers, and other businesses that you may have an account with. Because of these relationships, your account history will appear on one or all three of your credit reports with these bureaus.

You have a right to view your credit report and you can order a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus each year through AnnualCreditReport.com. You can also purchase a credit report directly from any of the credit bureaus at any time. Equifax and Experian offer 3-bureau credit reports which include all three major credit reports in a single document.

You may also need to contact a credit bureau directly to dispute inaccurate information in your credit report, purchase a credit score, or to place a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit report.

Contact Information For the Three Credit Bureaus

What the Three Bureaus Do and Don t Do

The major credit bureaus receive credit-related information from companies that you do business with.

They may also pull relevant public records. like tax lien or bankruptcy, and include that information in your credit report. The major credit bureaus sell your credit information to businesses who have a valid need for viewing your credit information and to companies who may prescreen you for their products and services. For example, a company who you ve applied for credit with would have a valid need for looking at your credit report.

The major credit bureaus only provide the information or other analytical tools to help businesses make decisions. The bureaus themselves do not make the decision.

    Credit Bureau Differences

These three credit bureaus, like all other credit bureaus, are separate entities and operate independently of each other and, generally, do not share your account information with each other. Your creditors may report to all three of the major credit bureaus or just one of them. Because of that, the information in your credit file may be different from one bureau to the next. When potential creditors and lenders check your credit, they may only pull one bureau s credit report, rather than viewing all three. (It s often less expensive for businesses to check just one credit report.) In managing your credit, it s important that you review your credit reports with all three of the credit bureaus.

FICO Is Not a Credit Bureau

FICO, the company who developed and maintains the FICO credit score is not a credit bureau. While they compile your credit score based on data from the major credit bureaus, they do not collect credit report data on their own.

100k and I have about 25k of liquid assets (checking + retirement accounts)

I really want to get accepted for the Platinum card, as I’m going to be a frequent flyer and would appreciate the benefits of the card.

I called American Express to apply over the phone, but I was a bit weary of applying for the Platinum card because of my limited credit history.

I chose to apply for the Gold Premier rewards out of safety (foolish mistake). I managed to get my application approved and the card is being shipped out.

Would my circumstances yield a platinum card approval?

If I don’t activate the gold card, will I be able to apply for a platinum? Would American Express do a second hard credit pull with the second application?

Should I keep the Gold Card for 13 months and attempt an upgrade?

I do not mind the annual fee difference, as the marginal benefits outweigh the marginal costs.

    Thanks for all your help.

You could always call them and ask. Since you are already a member, AmEx can pull credit reports on you all they want and it doesn’t count as a hard inquiry. Usually you have to have the Gold Card for awhile to establish a history with them. The worst they could do is say no, you have to wait. When you upgrade they apply what you have already paid in fees toward the new card.

That sounds like a great idea I would say yes. you never know you might just end up liking the gold rewards better than the platinum.

I would if I were you.

I applied for 3 cards in two days and all was approved. I also already had a clear card totaling four applications in about six months.

This move is highly UN-RECOMMENDED. My application for platinum was for 50 000 Membership Rewards points for new Platinum card signup, transferred 50 k to Delta and I got 30% 15K Point certificate back that was credited back to my account. For 75000 Miles it was worth the hard pull but again I already have all the credit I need and don’t plan on applying for anything for at least two years.

My take is you stay gold, but you know what is best for you.

I agree with ooxs, I would wait. I received 50,000 points when I signed up. Of course, they didn’t show up like they were supposed to, so I called. I was amazed at how much nicer they are when you call Platinum CS versus Gold. I forwarded the email and immediately I received an apology. 50k miles in rewards is a very nice incentive. When AE decides you fit the profile, your account will flag the marketing department to send you an invitation in the postal mail. At that point, if you wait until the next invitation, you are more likely to get bonus points for accepting it. My first invitation had no points attached to it.

    Reducing Credit Card Processing Costs

Credit Card Processing Rates and Fees

Most of your costs will be transaction processing fees. Your rate per transaction is determined by your personal and business risk, percentage of card-absent sales, average dollar amount per sale, and total dollar amount of monthly sales. Lowering your transaction risk will also lower the rate you pay.

To get the best rate for the way you conduct business, be sure you understand the rates and qualifications around each type of sale.

Qualified rate is the percentage rate that’s charged whenever you accept and process a regular card using an approved processing solution. This is usually the lowest rate you can receive, and it’s often what you’ll be quoted when you inquire about rates.

Mid-qualified rate is the percentage rate that’s charged if you accept and process a card that doesn’t qualify for the lowest rate. This may happen when you manually key a card into a terminal instead of swiping it, or if a rewards or business card is being used.

Non-qualified rate is the percentage rate that’s charged whenever you accept and process a card that doesn’t qualify for either qualified or mid-qualified rates. This may happen when a card is manually keyed into a terminal versus being swiped, address verification isn’t performed, information is missing, or the authorization is not settled within the allotted time frame (usually 48 hours).

A rate increase, otherwise known as a downgrade, occurs when your transactions don’t meet the requirements for the lowest or qualified rate. To mitigate the number of downgrades you receive, make sure your transactions meet the qualification requirements to get you the lowest rate available for every transaction. Train your staff to do the same. Secondly, train closing and opening staff on how to audit transactions totals for errors and close out daily credit card transactions at the end of each day.

Batching means settling the charges to your terminal by sending the completed transactions for the day to the acquiring bank for payment. To make sure you get the best possible rate on all your daily transactions, you must batch out within 24 hours. If you don’t, you may raise the risk of dispute and cause your transactions to be downgraded. Remember that dial-up connections are prone to dropped lines and duplicate charges.

The interchange fee is a percentage of the transaction and helps to cover authorization costs, fraud, and credit losses. Most merchant service providers include the interchange fee in their bundled rate, which makes it more difficult to identify specific rates. Ask your provider if you can pay the interchange fee as it is incurred. This will prevent you from paying more than you need to and help you keep better track of your transaction costs.

A chargeback occurs when the cardholder disputes a transaction and it’s returned to the acquiring bank. If you don’t respond promptly to a chargeback inquiry, you may have to pay a timeliness fee or lose the entire sale. Be sure to ask your prospective provider how it deals with chargebacks and what costs are involved.

Not all cards are created equal

Certain credit cards cost more to process than others. It’s up to you to choose what works best for your business. To help offset the cost of processing more expensive card types, make sure your transactions meet as many of the qualifying requirements as possible.

Debit cards have grown in popularity. They often serve as both a check and a debit card. Deciding whether to process a charge as online or offline can make a difference in your rates. Please keep in mind the following:

    1. Online transactions get processed through the credit card interchange and are charged at an online (non-qualified) rate.

    2. Offline transactions get processed through the debit network and are charged a flat per-transaction fee.

    3. Reduce your costs by processing low-cost items at the offline rate and larger items at the online rate.

    Service without the cost

Be wary of merchant service providers that charge you a fee for contacting customer service. If your system isn’t working, you should be able to get help without paying extra for it. This is different from providers that charge for premium services. Other items for which you may be charged include printed account statements, account updates, monthly minimums or maximums, and service cancellations.

    Other operational fees

Many operational fees are bundled or hidden within other charges. Most of these charges are a part of your transactions. They simply reflect the cost of doing business.

    1. Communications fees cover the Internet costs of moving the transaction from the merchant to the processor. Dial-up transmission costs more to cover the processor’s maintenance of toll-free phone circuits and modems.

    2. Address and voice authorization verifications reduce your fraud risk and can help you avoid a rate downgrade.

    It’s all in the details

There’s no avoiding it: if you accept credit and debit cards, you’ll have to pay fees. Your best defense against hidden costs and unnecessary downgrades is to keep accurate records of your processing costs. Audit your records regularly to build your own benchmarks and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of your business rules and practices. Based on this data, you can continue to optimize the way you do business. Just remember that accepting credit cards should help—not hurt—your bottom line.

If you are ready to explore further, QuickBooks Payments offers payment solutions that allow businesses to process credit/debit card payments on mobile phones or tablets, as well as accept ACH bank transfers and checks. Visit this page to find out more details and pricing.

    ≔ Highlights

    • Credit card fraud laws vary by state.
    • Fraud often involves misuse and ill intent.
    • Penalties range from misdemeanor fines to felonies carrying years of jail time.

    → What s next

If you have a credit card, you have to worry — at least a little — about credit card fraud. Have you ever wondered, though, if fraudsters ever actually get caught? If so, what kind of consequences do they face?

    States make the call

For the most part, the statutes governing credit card fraud are determined by individual states. Those statutes differ from one state to the next.

In California, the Penal Code is specific and dense to read. The most common crimes referred to are:

    • Using someone else s credit or debit card without that person s consent.
    • Using your own credit or debit card knowing that it has been revoked or expired or that your available balance is less than the purchase price.
    • Using a stolen or fraudulent credit or debit card to receive money, goods or services.

    Crime and punishment

The test is really “fraudulent use,” so don’t worry if you accidentally use a card you canceled. There has to be intent, and other thresholds have to be met. One such threshold that goes beyond “fraudulent intent” is “to obtain a benefit,” often more than $1,000.

Here we’re talking about forgery, alteration, stealing, counterfeiting and even publishing someone else’s information. What a thief actually does will determine if the charge is petty or grand theft, or forgery. The consequences (as in any criminal case) will also depend on the circumstances and the thief’s criminal history.

In general, however, both grand theft and forgery are felonies, subjecting the perpetrator to 16 months or two or three years in California state prison and a maximum $10,000 fine, or as a misdemeanor to up to one year in a county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine. (Petty theft is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six-months in a county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine).

Texas is different. The statutes are pretty specific as to what is illegal and is punishable by what Texas calls a “state jail felony.” It sounds bad, but it s actually the least serious felony in Texas law. Here, a thief gets a minimum of six months in jail but no more than two years, and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

    Federal penalties dwarf states’

Oh, but we aren’t done yet. There are federal violations that often are attached to credit card fraud. These appear under Title 18 USC 1029. If a thief pulls his stunt on government property across state lines, or against a government entity, then federal charges may apply. The consequences there are much worse – as in, 10 to 20 years in prison.

    How Credit Card Skimming Works

    Updated February 27, 2017

Victims of credit card skimming are completely blindsided by the theft. They notice fraudulent charges on their accounts or money withdrawn from their accounts, but their credit and debit cards never left their possession. How did the theft happen?

    How Credit Card Skimming Works

Credit card skimming is a type of credit card theft where crooks use a small device to steal credit card information in an otherwise legitimate credit or debit card transaction.

When a credit or debit card is swiped through a skimmer, the device captures and stores all the details stored in the card s magnetic strip. Thieves use the stolen data to make fraudulent charges either online or with a counterfeit credit card.

Credit card skimmers are often placed over the card swipe mechanism on ATMs and gas stations. With ATMs, the crooks may place a small, undetectable camera nearby to record you entering your PIN. This gives the thief all the information needed to make fake cards and withdraw cash from the cardholder s checking account.

Occasionally, certain retail and restaurant workers who handle credit cards are recruited to be part of a skimming ring. These workers use a handheld device to skim your credit card during a normal transaction. For example, we routinely hand our cards over to waiters to cover the check for a restaurant. The waiter walks away with our credit cards and, for a dishonest waiter, this is the perfect opportunity to swipe the credit card through a skimmer undetected.

Once the victim s credit card information is stolen, thieves will either create cloned credit card to make purchases in store, use the account to make online purchases, or sell the information on the internet.

Victims of credit card skimming are often unaware of the theft until they receive a billing statement or overdraft notices in the mail.

How to Prevent and Detect Credit Card Skimming

Simply using your credit card puts you at risk of becoming a credit card skimming victim. Credit card skimming incidents can be difficult to detect. Unless you know what you re looking for, it can be extremely difficult to detect skimming devices.

Catching fraudulent charges related to a skimming incident requires you to watch your accounts frequently. Monitor your checking and credit card accounts online at least weekly and immediately report any suspicious activity to your bank or credit card issuer.

Here are a few more tips for avoiding credit card skimming.

    • Watch where you shop. Restaurants, bars, and gas stations seem to be the places where credit card incidents happen most frequently. Retail store self-checkouts and ATMs, especially standalone ATMs (those that aren t at the bank) are also places that skimmers can be found.
    • Know how a credit card skimmer looks. Krebs on Security has a well-documented page on credit card skimming and several pictures of credit card skimmers that demonstrate how difficult it is to detect the devices, which have become smaller and more difficult to detect over the years.
    • Check ATMs before using them. At ATMs, skimmers often place a camera within view of the keypad to steal your PIN. Or, they place a fake keypad on top of the real one to record your keystrokes. When you re using an ATM, cover your hand as you type your PIN to keep a camera from catching a view of what you re typing. If the keys seem hard to push, eject your card and use another ATM. Use a bank-operated ATM, which is less likely to have a skimmer, rather than an ATM at a store or gas station.
    • Don t become a victim of credit card cleaning scams. where thieves claim to clean the magnetic strip on your credit card to help it work better. These thieves simply swipe your credit card through a credit card skimmer and take your credit card information.

How to Report a Credit Card Skimming Loss

Contact your bank or credit card issuer to let them know that your credit card information has been compromised. Call first, then follow up in writing. If only your credit card information has been stolen, you won t be liable for any fraudulent charges.

Place a fraud alert on your credit report. This forces businesses to confirm your identity before approving applications in your name.

Alert the Federal Trade Commission. They often work to break up large credit card skimming rings. Your complaint will help catch the thieves.

How Do Cash-Back Credit Card Rewards Programs Work?

By Brandon Cornett | June 15, 2014 | 2014, All rights reserved | Duplication prohibited

If you’re over the age of 18, and you have a mailbox, you’ve probably received an offer for a cash-back credit card rewards program. Or perhaps you’ve seen the advertised online. They are one of the most popular types of credit cards in use today.

But what are they, exactly? How do they work? And what else do you need to know about them, as a consumer? Those are some of the questions we will answer in this tutorial. Here’s an in-depth look at how cash-back credit cards work.

What is a Cash-Back Rewards Program?

Let’s start with the basics. What is a cash-back rewards program? Basically, it’s an incentive in which the credit card company offers to “pay” you a certain percentage for using your card to make purchases. Often, the issuer will charge a higher interest rate in exchange for the “reward” features.

The details vary from one program to the next, but in general it works like this: You use your cash-back rewards card to make occasional purchases, as you would with any other type of card. Then, at the end of each year (or annual billing period), the company gives a certain percentage of your expenditure back to you in the form of a rebate.

How Do These Credit Cards Work?

In a typical rewards program, the cardholder might receive anywhere from 0.5% to 2% of the net expenditure (minus any refunds). This annual rebate could be credited back to the card, or paid to the customer directly in the form of a check. In other cases, the cash-back reward can be provided via electronic deposit to the consumer’s checking or savings account.

It varies by card, so make sure you know how and when the rebate will be applied.

As mentioned earlier, there are many types of rewards programs, and the details vary with each. Here are some of the most common features :

    • Some of these cards offer the cardholder 1% back on all purchases, along with a 50% bonus on cash back earned annually.
    • Other cash-back rewards programs offer different levels / percentages of rebates for different types of purchases.
    • A common strategy is to offer a lower reward percentage for the most common types of purchases, thereby reducing the amount the company has to pay back to the cardholder each year.
    • Some cards take these restrictions a step further by limiting cash-back rewards to certain “qualified purchases,” which might exclude the most common and popular types of transactions. Stated differently, they offer rewards for the least popular types of purchases in order to reduce their costs.

Be Aware: You May Pay a Higher Interest Rate

A survey conducted by the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation in Massachusetts found that customers who use credit cards with cash-back rewards often pay a price for the questionable benefits of such a card. In short, you may be charged a higher interest rate to compensate for the amount that is rebated back to you each year. In essence, these companies charge more to cover the losses (rebates) associated with a cash-back rewards program.

Specifically, the survey revealed that “rewards cards tend to have higher interest rates than non-rewards cards, and those with lower annual percentage rates (APRs) offer the rate based on an individual’s creditworthiness.”

A non-rewards credit card with a lower interest rate may be a better strategy in the long run, particularly for consumers who tend to carry a balance from one payment period to the next. Due to the higher APRs they usually carry, a rewards program card might cost more, annually, despite the amount that is rebated back each year.

As a cardholder, the best thing you can do is consider your spending habits, and find a card that will benefit you most based on those patterns. It might be a cash-back credit card, or a non-rewards product with a lower APR. You have to think about how you will use it, and how much it will cost you over the long run.

Additionally, if you are already struggling with debt, you should resist the urge to spend more just to earn rewards. This is a flawed strategy from a personal finance standpoint.

Do You Really Make Money’ With Them?

Can you really make money from using a cash-back rewards card? This is a common question among our readers. Unfortunately, the answer is usually no. The companies that design these cards are very shrewd. They know how to design products that appear to give you one thing, when they actually take something else.

For instance, rewards cards usually charge a higher APR than regular cards. As a result, you might end up paying more interest on your balance than the amount you get rebated back to you each year. In this kind of scenario, you are basically paying a lot more money to have a smaller amount credited back to you. They are cleverly designed financial products.

Before you sign up for a cash-back credit card, ask the issuer the following questions:

    • How can I earn and redeem my rewards?
    • What types of purchases are eligible for the cash-back feature?
    • Are my rewards available monthly or annually?
    • Does the money go into my bank account, or is it applied to my next bill?
    • Are there any limits or restrictions on the rewards I can earn with this card?

Additionally, make sure you read all the terms and conditions on the card to see if the product will actually save you money over the long term (based on your spending and purchasing habits). In other words, read the fine print!

When looking to get a credit card, there are a variety of things you should consider. If you want a rewards card to use frequently, you might not mind paying a $100 or $200 annual fee. You should also consider the regular APR (as opposed to the introductory rate) and the interest rate. A good interest rate is dependent on how you will use the card. For example, a 20% interest rate is fine if you plan on paying off the balance every month.

It pays to ask these kinds of questions before you fill out the application form. Here are 9 questions you want answered before you sign on the dotted line.

The “very first question” the consumer should ask is, “Why am I applying for this card? Why do I need this card?” says Bruce McClary, media director for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions, a nonprofit affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling

Some positive reasons: The card has low or no fees, a lower interest rate or offers a rewards program that suits your spending habits. “It has to make sense, and it has to fit into your overall lifestyle,” McClary says.

Do you pay off your credit card balances every month? If so, “you don’t care what the interest rate is because you won’t pay any,” says Ric Edelman, author of “The Truth About Money.” “But you care about the (annual) fee,” he says.

If you run a balance, you want the lowest rate you can get, even if that comes with an annual fee.

One clue to your usage: “Look at your past history,” says Edelman. “Because what you’ve done before is what you will be doing.”

If you’re shopping for a card, chances are you’re comparing card terms. But if an issuer sends you an offer, it’s tempting to apply and see what you get.

“It’s really difficult to pick one (in isolation),” says Kelly Rogers, chief development officer for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County and adjunct faculty at Chapman University. “If someone just shows you one car, how do you know if it’s the right car for you?”

Her advice: Do a side-by-side comparison of several different cards before you apply.

Don’t be afraid to plug the card name, “complaints” and “customer service” into your favorite search engine. “I go through and see who has the least amount of complaints and issues,” says Rogers.

Some cards will give you a range of rates you could get, but often that window is pretty wide, says Nick Bourke, director of the Safe Credit Card Project at The Pew Charitable Trusts. Other cards may offer a specific rate (or terms) and either approve or reject you.

If you’re operating totally in the dark, you have another option: Apply by phone and push for an answer on your rate and credit line before the account is opened.

While there are no guarantees, sometimes you can get an answer, says Bourke.

“I’ve actually done this myself,” he says, admitting “you do have to go pretty far in the process.”

You may have to ask for the department that’s actually evaluating your application to get an answer, he says.

“The thing that you want to do is when you’re talking to the person on the phone taking your application is you want to push them as hard as you can to get your APR and credit line,” Bourke says. Then, once you have the information and before the account is opened in your name, “you can say yes or no at that point,” he says.

According to the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, if a card offers a lower interest rate during an introductory period, the promotional rate has to last at least six months. While that introductory offer may be appealing, the regular rate is what you’re really buying.

So find out when the introductory APR expires and what the new rate will be. You can find this information online in the terms and conditions for the card or you can ask a service representative.

Another smart question: How long is that grace period? “Some cards start charging interest immediately,” says Edelman. A card can have different grace periods for balance transfers and cash advances than it does for purchases.

You can find information about the grace period in the credit card offer, thanks to federal rules that took effect in 2010. Look for a summary table of rate and fee disclosures, which will include a statement that explains how to avoid paying interest.

If you’re getting the card for points or rewards, this is one you definitely need to ask, says Josh Frank, senior researcher with the Center for Responsible Lending. Some issuers will revoke rewards if you’re late with a payment by even one day, he says.

“A lot of times, the answer they will give you is that they can take away or reduce your rewards for any reason,” he says. While that’s true, the issuer will have a policy on revoking or reducing points, and that’s what you want to ask about, he says. Under what specific circumstances would they reduce or eliminate a customer’s points?

In most cases, “this is one the customer service agent should know the answer to,” he says.

Some card issuers use your purchase records to assess your ongoing creditworthiness.

That means if you suddenly use your card to purchase retread tires, pay for a session with a marriage counselor or make a purchase at a market on a sketchy side of town, you could see your APR climb or your credit limit fall, says Frank. If you see this practice as an invasion of privacy, ask beforehand if the issuer does this, he says.

How to phrase it: Can my transactions ever be used in rating my credit risk?

And that’s one question the customer service representative “might not know the answer to,” says Frank. “You might want to ask them to transfer you to the credit department manager.”

If you are guaranteeing a card account by co-signing for a college student, ask if you will be on the hook for the debt after the other party turns 21, says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney for the National Consumer Law Center.

Many times, “there is nothing to prevent the issuers from saying you’re going to be guaranteeing this card 15 years from now — long after junior is out of college,” she says.

In addition, find out exactly what has to be done to get you off the account. Are you free to complete those steps yourself? Or will you need the cooperation of someone who might not want you — and those charging privileges — to go away?

Federal regulations limit your liability for unauthorized credit card charges to $50 if you report it within two business days. The longer you wait, the more you may lose. Many issuers cap losses at zero dollars, provided you follow a few rules. So find out how the card would handle charges you didn’t make, says McClary.

Also, does the issuer monitor usage and shut down the card if it sees out-of-the-ordinary charges or spending locations? That feature can be great if you always use the card for the same types of purchases in the same geographic area, but cumbersome if you’re getting the card for travel.

While it sounds counterproductive, you want to ask some detailed questions on how the issuer will treat you if you run into financial problems, says McClary.

Will you lose points or benefits? Will you be hit with late fees or a penalty rate? Ask what those penalties are or look online at the terms and conditions for the card.

Some issuers have programs to slash interest temporarily for customers who get behind, he says. Others don’t. So find out ahead of time what kind of programs the issuer offers that will help you rehabilitate your account and restore your original terms, McClary says.

Ask about the “worst case scenario,” he says. “When do they consider an account to be charged off? And when do they send an account to a collection agency?”

“It may be a little tough to get a hold of that information because it might not be readily available at the customer service level,” says McClary. “You may have to punch it up a level.”

    PCI COMPLIANCE

All merchants accepting credit cards must comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) before July 2010.

    What is PCI-DSS?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) is a worldwide information security standard mandated by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council.

Who makes up the PCI Council?

The council was formed as a collaborative effort between the five major card brands: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB. By coming together, standards were created to help organizations that process card payments prevent credit card fraud through increased controls around data and its exposure to compromises. The major card brands have allowed acquirers and processors to enforce compliance through their own means.

    Why should I become compliant?

You should become PCI compliant in order to make sure you are taking the proper care to ensure that cardholder data is protected. If a breach were to happen at your location, and if you are not PCI compliant at the time, the card associations may assess a fine against you and you will be liable for all the fraudulent transactions caused by the breach. However, if you are compliant, the fine may be reduced and you may not be responsible for the fraudulent transactions.

    How do I become compliant?

As a merchant, you will be responsible to become PCI compliant by PCI regulations. However, as a USBSI merchant, we offer in house PCI assistance to guide you and your business in achieving PCI compliance. Merchants are often advised to complete compliance by going online or by requesting a Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Through these outlets, USBSI’s dedicated staff will provide guidance and advice to questions you have regarding PCI compliance.

If you have further questions concerning PCI compliance and its requirements, you may contact a USBSI PCI Specialist at 888-525-8558 or visit the PCI Council’s website at http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org

Welcome to a different kind of CE experience!

So you need Social Work CE hrs for your license renewal. How we are unlike other sites, this is a markedly different experience. How? Each Continuing Education course has two sections. The first section provides you with a transcript of the Mp3 audio download. The main goal of these tracks is to provide you with practical information via case study examples. Each track is formatted to provide a tip or technique then to provide a case study which illustrates the tip or technique. It is this combination of practical techniques and case study examples that make our Social Work continuing education courses unique from any other CE provider .

Thus you can download the mp3 files to your smart phone, iPod, etc to play as you commute to and from work.

The next portion of each Continuing Education Course consists of research based information to provide a background for the techniques presented in the first portion of the Social Work course .

So if you feel you dont have the time nor the budget to attend a seminar consider the economical convenience of our online CE courses which contain mp3 audio downloads.

Secondly, are you tired of taking Social Work courses that leave you empty handed or more appropriately stated, empty-minded, when you conclude the CE course ; receiving a hand or a mindful of nothing that can really help you in your next client session? Our CE courses are chalk full of practical, proven, how-tos, tips, and techniques that can serve as real benefits to your clients.

Thirdly, since all of our content is available, free without password or payment, you can provide your client with links to pages that underscore concepts or training you wish to have reinforced. Thus our website can serve as a client education tool. As you are aware when clients hear the same idea you are presenting in a session, from another source it often times has more validity and credibility.

Fourth, in addition to mp3 downloads with practical techniques, research based information, and client training tools, the course content in the mp3 downloads, since it is an audio, is presented as if you were attending a seminar listening to a speaker. So rather than a reading through dry, perhaps boring, federal documents, you receive content-dense with useful information presented in the lively format of a professional speaker, while completing you Social Work license renewal requirements .

Every point of our website has been uniquely tailored to customer ease and convenience from the special packages that appear when you enter your state and profession, to the Facebook sharing buttons should you wish to share useful continuing education information with your colleagues, to the discounts provided on the shopping cart for ordering larger dollar volumes of courses.

You first of all come away with practical useful Social Work continuing education information provided at no charge, unlimited CE test scoring at no charge, money saving economical discounts and packages, mp3 downloads that you can reply as you commute to reinforce in your mind the valuable ideas presented so they will be at your fingertips at your next session; we have a YouTube channel that provides Power Points which can serve as staff and client training, as well as live seminars. Our Facebook . Twitter . LinkedIn. Google + . and Pintrest pages provide a multifaceted updates in addition to the valuable content found in the 200+ CE courses found on this website.

In addition, CE courses are listed in four convenient formats. Social Work CE courses are listed by topic, Social Work CE courses by the number of hours they provide, Social Work CE courses by code, and Social Work CE courses by discount. Once again, customer ease and convenience is our goal.

In addition each CE course page includes a carousel in the right hand column which helps you to view additional courses others have purchased in addition to the course you are currently viewing. Balance Transfers

    CALCULATOR INFORMATION

The Balance Transfer Calculator estimates the amount you may be able to save by transferring to a NAB product. We’ll leave you to put in the amount you’re thinking of transferring and your current product’s purchase rate.

Of course, any request by you to transfer this amount will be subject to our assessment of your credit application. So keep in mind, you may not be eligible for a balance transfer for the full amount on your existing cards.

    Calculator Assumptions

    Interest rate

The interest rate displayed is our current balance transfer promotional interest rate.

We’ve also displayed our current promotional purchase interest rate.

All rates displayed are per annum.

    Fees

This calculator only takes into account your current product’s purchase interest rate. You’ll also need to consider what other fees and charges apply to your current card and any discounts, or promotional offers, to assess any savings.

The estimated savings also do not take into account any fees applicable to your new NAB product, including any balance transfer fee that may apply. So to more accurately assess any savings you’ll need to read the product webpages on this site and understand what fees and charges will apply.

    Monthly repayments

The estimated savings assumes that during the promotional period you make no cash advances and make the minimum monthly repayments each month required under the terms and conditions.

If you’re considering a balance transfer, there are several things you need to know.

    * Balance Transfer Special Offer

Offer commences 1 June 2017. For approved applicants who apply for a new personal NAB Premium Card by 1 October 2017. The balance transfer interest rate will apply for a 20 month statement period from account opening. After the 20 months period, any unpaid balance transfers will attract the standard cash advance rate (currently 21.74%p.a. as at 1 June 2017). Interest rates are subject to change and available at www.nab.com.au.

Special promotion balance transfer must be applied for at the point of full card application. The one off balance transfer fee of 2% is calculated on the amount transferred and is charged to your NAB credit card account when your balance transfer is processed. Interest free days on purchases do not apply while you have a balance transfer. Minimum monthly repayments must be made by the due date each month. Offer is not available when losing/transferring from another NAB credit card account or in conjunction with any other NAB credit card offer.

Transfer as little as $200 from one or two cards.

You can transfer balances from one or two non-NAB cards. Each amount needs to be at least $200.

Terms and conditions available here. Fees and charges are payable. Approval and credit limit is subject to NAB’s credit assessment criteria. Information, including interest rates and annual card fees, subject to change. Correct as at 1 June 2017.

Potential Drawbacks of Web Based Merchant Account Credit Card Terminal – USBSwiper

    #

Potential Drawbacks of Web Based Credit Card Merchant Account Terminals

Many businesses sign up for merchant accounts where they want to be able to process credit cards through their computers via the internet. This can be a great alternative to traditional merchant account systems which typically require expensive purchase or lease terminals and the requirement to add a separate phone line for transmission of the data.

Once approved, the merchant is given a user name and password that they use to log into their web portal merchant account web page also known as a “Virtual Terminal”.

The page(s) of the Virtual Terminal have fields for data entry of the customer name, credit card number, expiration date, security code, billing address and transaction amount and details.

Some virtual terminal systems such as Chase PaymenTech also allow for the addition of a low cost credit card reader so that the cumbersome data can be easily “swiped” into the system. This will not only save on time but also errors in data entry. However, many systems that do allow for a “swiper” system require only that particular merchant processor’s own expensive reader which can sometimes be quite cost prohibitive.

Some of the drawbacks of this Virtual Terminal system need to be taken into consideration before deciding on this type of credit card processing system.

One of the biggest problems a merchant can experience with this type of system is what happens when the internet goes down for whatever reason. When a web based credit card processing system loses internet, the entire system is rendered Worthless. Because the system is web based, losing internet loses all data entry and all processing capabilities. This can be devastating and amount to profit loss for a business.

Also, logging in to the virtual terminal can sometimes be a long and tedious process depending on the speed of your internet and how busy the processors servers are. The other problem which can be a real nuisance is that if there is any period of time where you are not doing transactions, many virtual terminals will log you off which will then require you to re-log back in.

A second problem with this type of system is the lack of receipt printing formats. Again, because it is web based, the only “receipt” a merchant can print is the actual web page itself. This will require a laser or inkjet printer which will end up being expensive for not only 8.5 x 11 printer paper, but also for toner. Also, depending on the type of printer being used, this can be a slow process that customers do not want to wait for.

It is extremely important for a merchant to print a receipt not only to give to a customer but also to get signed for their own chargeback protections. There are a very few web based virtual terminal type systems that have formats built into them that will allow printing receipts to smaller thermal receipts such as the type you are used to seeing at a typical store that also has a signature line for customer signatures as well as some of the other formatting that will make a business look more professional.

Another drawback to these systems is that most have no bar code scanning capabilities. Many businesses with a lot of products benefit from being able to do bar code scanning for fast point of sale checkout. A virtual terminal system will typically have no provision for this or even a drop down list of products, descriptions, or pricing. All information typically must be entered in for each transaction manually. This can result in wasted time and productivity.

The USBSwiper.com System solves all of these problems in a cost effective easy to use credit card processing solution. Because the USBSwiper.com system is software based, should internet be lost for any reason, all the transactional information is saved in the system. That way, when internet returns, those transactions can then be processed. Also, the system incorporates bar code scanning and professional custom receipts with a full line of 2.25” portable and rechargeable receipt printers .

Also because you are not logged into any web based system, you do not have to worry about being logged off and having to take the time to re-log back on to those web based servers which can sometimes take a long time and customers do not like to wait.

In addition to this unique software based system, USBSwiper offers a full line of competitive low rate merchant account options giving any business cost savings and flexibility not found in most other systems. The USBSwiper merchant account options also offers ecommerce integration at no extra gateway fess which saves considerable amount of money for all inclusive merchant credit card processing features.

    Degree Programs at MCCC #mercer #county #community #college, #mccc, #programs, #degree #programs,

    #

    Visual Arts
concentrations: Art History, Ceramics/Sculpture, Fine Arts

    * State approval pending
1 offered with Camden County College
2 offered with Mercer County Technical Schools
    3 offered with Rider University
4 A.S. degree awarded by MCCC; Diploma awarded by St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing
5 A.S. degree awarded through a cooperative program with the School of
Health Related Professions at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

6 A.A.S. degree awarded through a cooperative program with Brookdale Community College

The academic programs offered by Mercer County Community College are among the most diversified and comprehensive in the country. Included are transfer programs that prepare students for entry into baccalaureate programs and career programs that prepare students for immediate employment after graduation.

The terms “transfer” or “career” simply describe the primary objective of the program. Many transfer graduates have been successful in gaining employment upon graduation. Many graduates of career programs have been successful in transferring to four-year colleges, with many of their MCCC credits being accepted.

In general, both kinds of degree programs require no more than 66 credits for graduation.

Because Mercer is committed to promoting intellectual development, aesthetic appreciation, and cultural awareness, every program of study includes a general education component. This component, addressed through a variety of courses, focuses on reading analytically, communicating ideas clearly, solving problems, and developing a broad base of knowledge. Students are given the opportunity to develop analytical, synthetic/creative, and evaluative thinking; scientific reasoning; artistic response and expression; historical consciousness; cultural awareness; and sensitivity to the contemporary world.

Transfer degree (A.A. A.F.A. or A.S.) programs are designed primarily to enable students to enter the third year of baccalaureate study at four-year colleges. The largest student enrollments in transfer degree programs are in humanities and social science, business administration, education, criminal justice, and nursing. Other transfer degree programs range from architecture, communication and visual arts to engineering science and plant science.

For many students, the transfer experience is made easier by “dual admission” and “program articulation” agreements between Mercer and other colleges.

Career degree (A.A.S.) programs are designed primarily to prepare graduates for entry-level employment in an occupation which requires both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Mercer has A.A.S. programs as varied as accounting, aviation, chef apprenticeship, electronics, ornamental horticulture, microcomputer systems administration, television, funeral service, and computer graphics.

Two engineering technology programs function both as transfer degree and career degree programs, with slightly more than half of all graduates transferring to four-year technology programs and others finding employment. Many employed students use career programs to gain advanced positions in their chosen field or to change careers. Some other A.A.S. programs also provide a basis for transfer to four-year colleges; a student may lose credits, however, if he or she transfers to an unrelated program of study.

Many students enroll at Mercer for purposes other than earning a degree or certificate. The college offers four enrollment categories for such students:

    • Other college — Students take courses at Mercer to fulfill program requirements at another college.
    • Job Related — Students take courses specifically selected to enhance knowledge and skills for current or future employment.
    • Exploratory — Students are undecided about which degree or certificate program they intend to pursue. They may take courses from several program areas to help them select.
    • Personal — Students take courses for other reasons. Advisors at each campus help non-degree students select courses.

Mercer offers a comprehensive program for students who are learning English as a second language. The multilevel sequence consists of two pre-credit and eight credit courses that emphasize grammar, speech, reading and writing skills. The free ESL placement test, arranged through the ESL Learning Center, should be completed at least two weeks before registration for classes.

The noncredit preparatory courses are offered through the English Language Institute (ELI) at the James Kerney and West Windsor campuses. Contact ELI at the James Kerney Campus or the ESL Learning Center at the West Windsor Campus for further information.

The LPN-RN advanced placement option offers licensed practical nurses (LPNs) the opportunity to gain experiential credit for their LPN license and receive credit for Fundamental Concepts of Nursing (NRS 110). Applicants must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent), have graduated from an accredited LPN school, possess a valid New Jersey LPN license and complete all the prerequisite course requirements for the nursing curriculum.

Admission to the professional phase of the program requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a passing score on the HESI Admission Assessment Exam. Six credits are given for Fundamental Concepts of Nursing (NRS 110). The student is then able to enroll in Alterations in Health I (NRS 120), Alterations in Health II (NRS 121), or Concepts of Mental Health Nursing (NRS 123). Students must earn a minimum grade of C in all nursing, science, and mathematics courses to graduate.

Please note that admission to either of the LPN-RN Advanced Placement program options are on a space available basis only.

Students who complete the college’s Nursing program earn the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree and eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses (RNs).

Cooperative education integrates textbook and classroom learning with work experience. Several academic programs offer cooperative education components. The program affords many advantages to students who are able to earn an income while attending college and earn college credits for their cooperative education experiences. In addition, many graduates find employment easier to obtain if they have had prior work experiences.

A successful co-op experience requires careful delineation of learning objectives and employer willingness to support them. The college assists students in defining objectives and obtaining co-op positions.

Credit Card Debt Relief Government Program

    Highlights (Click for More):

The government has no specific programs to grant consumers bailout from credit card debt. However, there are a variety of other ways in which the government can provide relief, from recently passed legislation to regulate credit card companies and protect cardholders, to granting bankruptcy filings which can partially or fully forgive credit card debt. to publicly funded credit counseling agencies which can provide you with debt management plans and indirectly through consolidation loans.

Read on to learn more about each type of credit card debt relief government program.

Legislation to Help with Credit Card Debt

Recently, the government has passed legislation designed to make the likelihood of getting into, eventual consequences, and handling of credit card debt easier for consumers. There are three major components of this legislation, which regulates credit card companies and protects cardholders:

    • Earlier Bill Notices. As of August of 2009, credit card companies are legally obligated to notify cardholders of changes to their credit card contract 45 days prior to making the change. This legislation protects the cardholder from the credit card company changing the terms of contract without sufficient prior notice and allows the cardholder more of a choice in the rate at which he or she wants to repay the debt. It’s important to note that you, as the cardholder, also now have the right to refuse a proposed change in your contract. Keep in mind that if you do refuse the change, then you have a maximum of five years to pay off your debt at the originally contracted rate.
    • Restricted Interest Rates. As of February 2010, unless a cardholder has failed to make a single payment within a full 60 day period, the credit card company does not have the right to raise the interest rate on the cardholder’s credit balance. This legislation is designed to protect cardholders from suddenly seeing that their interest rate has been increased while they are struggling to make consistent payments. This is an improvement over past situations where credit card companies raised interest rates in the middle of repayment plans, leaving cardholders to adjust to new and higher payments.
    • Greater Notification to Consumers: The April 2009 legislation also obligates credit card companies to send a statement in the mail to a cardholder three weeks before their payment is due. This three week period is designed to give advance notice to the cardholder of the impending payment, and it is also intended to allow the cardholder a two-week paycheck period during which he or she can hopefully obtain the money necessary to make the payment. The extra week this three week period allows, an improvement over the prior laws under which credit card companies only had to mail statements two weeks before they were due, aims to prevent late payments as well.

Debt Relief Programs Approved by the Government

Though it’s not ideal, if you are in an absolutely desperate debt situation and can see no feasible way out, your best bet is to petition your local branch of the United States Bankruptcy Court and file for bankruptcy. If the Court reviews your records and finds your debt to be eligible, you may be granted partial or full relief. If you are facing credit card debt, this is the closest to a credit card debt relief government program. There are two personal types of bankruptcy you can file with the Bankruptcy Court: Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

    • Chapter 7. You may be eligible to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy if your income is less than the median yearly income level for a person or family in your state. Filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy will erase most of your debt history; however, you should be aware that your credit score will be damaged for 10 years after your filing.
    • Chapter 13. You may be eligible to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. One thing to be aware of with filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy is that your credit score will be damaged for seven years after the date on which you filed.

Debt Settlement as an Alternative to Bankruptcy

    Government Programs for Debt Relief

Filing for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 Bankruptcy can plague you with a set of challenges. such as lawsuits, monetary judgments, or garnished wages which you may want to avoid, not to mention the long term impact on your credit score which it may incur. If you want to avoid bankruptcy, debt settlement is a viable and recommended alternative by the Federal Trade Commission. Under debt settlement, a debtor can receive a lump sum agreement or installment through which he or she will pay off debt at a reduced, fractional rate of the total account balance, perhaps at around half, or more or less depending on the debtor’s situation. Though debtors can hire a firm to help with creating a debt settlement plan. the FTC warns against for-profit firms as they are often out to scam debtors. Debtors can create their own self-managed debt settlement plan or look into free credit counseling agencies .

Seek Help from a Government Funded Credit Counseling Agency

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development certifies credit counseling agencies, which are close to qualifying as a credit card debt relief government program and can create a debt management plan for the debtor. The way credit counseling agencies work is that, after a free initial session, the debtor pays the agency a monthly fee. The agency then works out a reduced payment plan with the credit card company. In exchange, the credit card company will often agree to end any lawsuits or collection plans as long as the debtor is on the plan.

    Government Debt Consolidation Loans

Another way in which a credit card debt relief government program can indirectly help you is through government debt consolidation loans. There are a variety of government debt consolidation loans available, depending on what type of debt you are in, whether it is student or mortgage.

5 Unique Online Business Ideas, Small But Successful

Entrepreneurship has always fascinated me. I m amazed by the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes with building your own business. and I respect the risks that come with working for yourself. Even if your venture fails, as a business leader you still learn valuable lessons that you can use to make your next attempt more successful.

Taking a successful business model from someone else and building on it is no crime. In fact, it is how most leaders build businesses. It doesn t always take a stroke of genius to get to the top. But when those once-in-a-lifetime ideas strike, your window to act may be small. I don t accept the idea that all of the good ideas have been taken. These five unique businesses are proof that you can find prosperity, even in a market that may not have even existed when you first had your idea.

    1. Santa Mail

When I first heard about Santa Mail. I had one of those Why didn t I think of that? moments. The premise couldn t be simpler: Parents order letters for children, and Santa Claus himself puts a note in the mail. For just under $10, your kids will get a personalized letter from Santa that is (genuinely) postmarked from the North Pole in Alaska. The site isn t flashy, but it s simple and effective.

Santa Mail has been around since 2003, and as far as I can tell, it was the first company of its kind. Since then, at least four sites offering the same service have popped up. Even though someone may come along and offer something better, for now, Santa Mail is at the top of its niche.

    2. Alchemy Goods

Though recycling has been popular for years, practical-use items made from recyclable items and materials are quickly becoming more desirable. From clothes and bags to water bottles and wallets, these unique items are high-quality goods that let people show off the positive difference they re making for the environment. Alchemy Goods was originally born not out of ingenuity, but of necessity.

When Alchemy owner Eli Reich s messenger bag was stolen, he decided that instead of buying another, he would make one himself. With plenty of bicycle inner tubes lying around, he decided to make it the primary material for his new bag. Long story short, the completed product was a huge hit at the office, and Eli began to make them on a much larger scale. Today, Alchemy products are carried in many stores across the country.

    3. Fetal Greetings

The greeting card business has been huge for years, and it seems to get bigger with every passing holiday. Fetal Greetings offers a special opportunity for expecting mothers: To have their baby greet the world in the form of a card! Holly Nill-McKay started the company in 1999, and while the idea may sound strange, I love it. It s a great example of a unique and clever idea that builds on an existing industry. The cards themselves are cute, and they make wonderful surprises to send to family and friends to announce a pregnancy.

    4. Something Store

Do you love the feeling of waiting for something in the mail? I know I do, and that s why I tried out Something Store. A few years ago, I saw a piece in a popular magazine about an online store that sells mystery objects. I was intrigued. For $10 (no shipping cost), they send you a random item. It could be anything in the world. Since 2007, they ve shipped over 50,000 somethings to customers who wait with anxious anticipation.

I tried it and received an unusual, metal, spider-like object. It winds up and moves along the floor or tabletop. I looked it up and found that it usually retails for about $28. While I wouldn t necessarily have bought it in the first place, for $10 I got a pretty good deal.

    5. I Do Now I Don t

Every day, couples in love get engaged. And every day, couples who have fallen out of love separate or break an engagement. When the latter happened to Josh Opperman, his fiancee was kind enough to return the engagement ring. and he didn t know what to do with it. Since the wholesale markup on engagement rings is insanely high, he would have taken a huge loss in returning it. So instead, he started his business, I Do Now I Don t. an online marketplace for unwanted engagement rings. Customers can buy rings at prices far cheaper than you d find at a traditional store, and you can sell at rates that are better than you d get if you tried to return the ring. Business started booming, and now you can buy and sell other jewelry items there too.

    Final Word

This short list of examples just goes to show that not all of the good business ideas are taken just yet. It seems to me that when I get one of those genius ideas, I m always in the shower. By the time I get out and try to remember what was on my mind, it s gone. I hope it is not just me that this happens to.

How do you get inspiration to strike? And what do you do to remember your ideas and put them into action? Share your ideas, or any other unique sites or businesses you ve found. I m always looking for strange and intriguing things.
