A Quick, No-Nonsense Guide to Basic Instructional Design Theory

A lot of eLearning professionals, especially those who have just started with their practice, often ask about the need for theory. Why bother with an instructional design theory at all? Isn’t practice enough?

Practice and theory actually goes hand in hand. This is true not only in instructional design but in any other field or discipline. Theory, far from crippling your practice, will actually help you improve the quality of your eLearning material. While a learning theory won’t answer all of your design problems, it offers clarity throughout your process and directs you toward finding solutions.

Three Most Popular Learning Theories of Instructional Design

Of the many eLearning theories that influence the practice, three of them are used by professionals on a daily basis. And all of them are concerned with HOW students are going to learn. By understanding each of them, you are able to figure out which works well in a learning environment. You can, of course, combine these theories depending on your (1) goal as an instructional designer, (2) the business objectives of your organization or client organization, (3) the needs of learners, and (4) the subject matter.

1. Behaviorism

This theory focuses on an individual’s observable and measurable behaviors that are repeated until they become automatic. It also deals with how an individual’s external environment shapes his or her behavior.

Since the theory is only interested in quantitatively observing responses to stimuli, it totally ignores the possibility of thought processes inside a learner’s mind. It’s only concerned with “what” learners need to know—which explains the behaviorist’s use of methods such as identification, rote memorization and association.

In skill building, the same behaviorist approach is applied by observing (what) a particular skill and practicing it. The student’s task is to remember the skill and respond, while the instructor offers feedback (indicate whether the response is correct and incorrect) and provide for practice.

Behaviorism is deemed applicable to instructional design when you aim:

  • To create measurable and observable learning outcomes among students
  • To use tangible rewards and informative feedback to improve student learning performance
  • To guide students in mastering a set of predictable skills or behaviors

2. Cognitivism

Like Behaviorism, Cognitivism observes new behavioral patterns. But Cognitivism focuses on what Behaviorism ignores—the thought process behind the behavior. Having observed changes in the behavior, adherents of this theory then use those changes as indicators to what’s happening inside the individuals’ mind.

Learning, from a Cognitive point of view, then, is more of an internal and active mental process. And unlike Behaviorism (which focuses on the what), Cognitivism focuses on the how—how to learn. While Behaviorism draws attention to the learner’s environment, Cognitivism offers a learner-focused approach. It uses tools and technology that mimics the human thought process and even considers more complex processes such as problem-solving, thinking, information processing and concept formation.

This is not to assume that Cognitivism is better than Behaviorism. Again, the right theory will depend on factors enumerated earlier. Should you decide to take a Cognitive approach to designing your material, be sure to:

  • Factor in learner characteristics that may either promote or interfere with the cognitive process of information
  • Consider and analyze which tasks are appropriate for effectively and efficiently processing information
  • Apply a variety of learning strategies that allow learners to connect new information to prior knowledge.

3. Constructivism:

This theory posits that we perceive a distinct image of the world based on our individual experiences, mental structures and beliefs. Similar to Cognitivism, it places the learner at the center of the learning environment. The learner isn’t merely absorbing information passively but is actively involved in constructing knowledge individually. This means knowledge cannot be simply transmitted from one learner to another.

From a Constructivist’s point of view, the learner is in control of his or her own learning. That’s why it’s important to make information accessible and available in several ways so that learners can revisit content anytime and manipulate information based on their goals.

So what’s next?

Now that you are able to distinguish three basic instructional design theories, how do you decide which one to use? While there’s no single formula for selecting the most appropriate theory, experts usually match learning theories with the learning content.

For instance, the behavioral approach is much more effective in helping learners master the content of his or her profession (knowing what) and where learner bring almost none prior knowledge to learning. On the other hand, the cognitive approach can effectively help learners solve problems in unfamiliar situations (knowing how) as this theory is usually considered more appropriate for explaining complex forms of learning (reasoning, problem solving, etc). As for the constructivist approach, experts have effectively applied it when dealing with ill-defined problems that calls for reflection-in-action.(Ertmer P. Newby, T. 1993)

    With the advent of arcade, home console, computer, and now mobile and tablet games, game design has become an elaborate process. Specialists trained in a variety of disciplines collaborate to create great computer or video games replete with state-of-the-art animation and visual effects. These individuals need not be in the same room, city or even the same state. Not only are many game designers (about 57 percent) self-employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a significant portion work from home, regardless of their employment.

    Historically, game design has primarily been male-dominated, but in the past 25 years, more women have been entering the field. From 1989 through 2009, women went from being 3 percent to 11 percent of the game design workforce, and since 2009, the number of women hired by gaming companies has tripled.

    What are the educational requirements?

    If you are interested in pursuing a career in game design, go to college the minimum requirement for employment is typically a bachelor’s degree, the BLS reports. Some schools have dedicated degree programs in game design, but if you can’t find one that suits you, remember it isn’t the only educational option. You can earn this degree in computer graphics, art, animation or a related field.

    While it may be helpful to possess artistic ability and talent, people lacking in those areas can often compensate with robust technical and computer skills, and those abilities might be preferred by some employers.     In 2013, the New Jersey School of Architecture celebrated its fortieth birthday in playing a critical role in architectural education in New Jersey and the nation. The need for a public College of Architecture in New Jersey was recognized as early as 1958, when the New Jersey Society of Architects (NJSA) actively lobbied for its creation. In 1972, the NJSA asked the AIA to appoint a National Advisory Committee to make recommendations for a public School of Architecture in New Jersey. The Committee subsequently recommended that the School be established in Newark. In 1973, the Newark College of Engineering submitted a formal proposal to the State Board of Higher Education. With the Board’s approval, the New Jersey School of Architecture (NJSOA) was born. Concurrently, the host institution adopted the name it uses today: the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).

    By September of that year, the NJSOA established office space in temporary quarters in Tiernan Hall. In its first year, the School consisted of founding dean Harlyn Thompson, an administrative assistant, a secretary, and two work-study students. By the first full operating year (1974-75), the School had grown to include 240 full-time students and 8 faculty members, some still active today.

    Accreditation was granted in 1978, following the graduation of the first class in 1977. Dean Thompson stepped down in 1979 and was followed by Professor Barry Jackson, who was appointed acting dean and served until January of 1981. At that time, Sanford Greenfield was appointed dean and served for nearly ten years. The next dean, Urs Gauchat, was appointed in February of 1991 and retired in December 2016. Anthony Schuman is currently acting as the Interim Dean.

    Since its inception, the New Jersey School of Architecture has continuously expanded its academic, research, and technical strengths. In addition to the initial accredited Bachelor of Architecture program, the School initiated other undergraduate and graduate programs to provide a variety of educational opportunities, including the Master of Architecture (NAAB accredited) and Master of Science in Architecture in 1984, the Master of Infrastructure Planning in 1996 and the Doctorate in Urban Systems in 2001.

    With the inception of the School of Art and Design (A+D) in 2008, the NJSOA became part of a larger entity: the College of Architecture and Design. Led by the vision of Dean Gauchat, and under the guidance of its founding Director, Glenn Goldman, A+D further diversified design education at NJIT through the introduction of degree programs in Industrial Design, Interior Design, Digital Design and Fine Arts. Darius Sollohub was named Director of the NJSOA in 2010, Richard Garber in early 2016, and Gernot Riether in October 2016.

    If there is one mistake small town businesses make more often than any other it’s, What ever is left over, we’ll use for advertising.

    Marketing and advertising is an investment, not an expense.

    I know it sure seems like an expense to me when I’m writing the check, but trust me it’s not.

    Without enough money put aside for advertising your sales can go down and you suddenly have less and less for promotion.

    When do you advertise the most? For most businesses it’s the first day of business.

    Don’t you have a Grand Opening, balloons, flyers, ads, on-site radio stations, contests, and prizes?

    Did the income from sales pay for that? No, it didn’t. You advertise most when you need business. You advertise more when you don’t.

    An average cost of advertising is usually 1 to 5% of gross sales, which can vary according to location, local advertising rates, and industry. Car dealers need more advertising than funeral homes.

    Before we get to the 25 tips let’s look at the basic strategies of successful advertising.

    * In order to be successful, your advertising must provide a consumer benefit or solve a problem.
    * That benefit or solution must be wanted by the consumer.
    * The product or service you are offering must be tied directly to that benefit or solution.
    * The benefit or solution must be distinctly communicated through medial advertising. In other words, be clear, forget the advertising glitz and make sure the message isn’t lost in the ad.

    A small-budget advertiser doesn’t have the ”deep pockets to develop big advertising campaigns. Some time you need to break the rules to be noticed.

    Avis did it by admitting they were Number 2 in the car rental business and that campaign took them from 6th place to second place.

    When they stopped that campaign they dropped back to 6th again. In the past year they have gone back to it.

    Budget conscious advertisers must achieve top results for their advertising dollar. Expand your dollars by adopting some creative techniques.

    Here’s 25 tips I hope will help you.

    1. Radio, newspapers and magazine specialists will frequently give free help in developing an advertising strategy. Things like demographic information, money-saving ways to produce your ads etc.
  • Place your ads in off hours or in unusual locations for less. Many times you can still reach your target market with these spots.
  • Instead of a one-time big splash ad, be consistent with frequent small ads that work.
  • Monthly magazines sometimes have unsold ad space at the end of the month they will sell at a discount.
  • If you have an 800 number, put it in every ad for immediate response and feedback.
  • Try advertising consistently in the classifieds. These ads may draw more customers than more expensive display ads.
  • Can you barter for the cost of ad production? Maybe the newspaper needs painting in exchange for an ad about your paint store.
  • Piggyback advertising are the ads you receive with your Mastercard bill. Is there someone in your town that sends out a lot of bills? Can you put a small flyer in with their bills and split the postage? Or pay a small fee?
  • Split advertising costs with the people who sell to you. Vendors and manufactures are always looking for exposure. Let people know you carry their products and have the vendor pick up part of the ad cost.
  • Are there up front advertising discounts for cash?
  • Consider advertising in regional issues of national magazines. The costs are lower and you can still reach your target market. TV Guide is a good choice. It stays around for at least a week. Time, Newsweek, and US News and World Report may stay in local doctors offices for years.
  • Share ad costs with neighbor business. Video stores and Pizza parlors are natural partners. Have coupons to each others stores or share the cost of flyers.
  • Try reducing the size of your ad (not in the Yellow Pages) or length of your radio spots. A 60 second spot is not twice as much as a 30 second spot but you won’t get twice as many customers for a 60 over a 30. Going with small ads or shorter spots will allow you to do more ads which normally pulls more customers. It’s better to be there every day with small ads than every month with one big one.
  • Develop tight production controls to minimize the need to reject finished ads. The message is more important than the messenger. Don’t try to produce ads that win awards, produce ads that sell.
  • Who are your very best customers? Aim your ads to talk directly to people like them.
  • What will suppliers give you in the way of point-of-purchase materials. Posters, stand ups, handouts, etc. Some have excellent display racks you can use.
  • Some national chains like Coke and Pepsi provide outdoor signs for businesses. There are also indoor lighted signs you write on with special markers to advertise your special offers.
  • Can you sponsor a community event? A fun-run, golf tournament, or other event that will be well publicized in the community. Your name may not be prominently displayed but sometimes the positive exposure in the community will bring in new customers.
  • Small businesses can seldom afford saturation advertising. You must be selective in the media that reaches your customers. Pin your ad reps down and make them show you exactly how their media reaches your target audience.
  • Exploit the media you choose to the fullest. If your message is verbal, you don’t need TV. Use radio, billboards and newspapers to the fullest.
  • Consider direct mail. A letter and brochure before customer contact can increase business. An IBM study concluded that selling time can be reduced from 9.3 to 1.3 total hours with direct mail advertising. A Sales and Marketing Executives International Study showed salespeople went from eight orders per 100 cold calls to 38 orders per 100 when direct mail was used.
  • Try an editorial style ad. These are ads that look like actual stories in the newspaper. They will have advertisement at the top of the article. Develop a good headline, and 50% more people will read the article than would read an ad of the same size.
  • You can’t match larger competitors dollar-for-dollar but, you can use unusual approaches (like the Avis idea above), color, music, slogans, humor (be careful here), or media selection to win your market away from the big guys.
  • Due to the high costs of conventional advertising on, radio, TV, newspapers, many cost conscious business have been forced to look for lower cost methods. Can you advertise on parking meters, taxi boards, balloons, blimps, and grocery shopping carts. Community bulletin boards, movie ads, and weekly newspaper shoppers.
  • Key your ads. Put something in the ad that will let you know which media it came from. On coupons, put a code that will record the paper and date of the ad. In radio or TV, have them mention the ad to get the discount. Ask every customer how they found you.
  • Plan for a rainy day. During the year put a small amount aside each month for emergencies. You never know when you’ll need to react quickly to whatever the competition is doing. You must be able to capitalize on breaking national events or news regarding your industry. If negative things happen in your industry you may need to respond quickly to make sure the right message is presented.
  • Always give the customer more than you promised and more than they expected. This is tip number 27 of the 25 we advertised. Maybe this last one is the one you needed.
  • I hope these tips will help your business grow. Not all may be relevant to your particular situation. Hopefully, they will illustrate the importance to plan and control your advertising budget.

    The animation education industy has never been so competitive, with schools competing for students and students competing for a small number of available industry jobs. The job rate and student employability has dropped to the lowest in years, so a top-notch animation education has never been so critical.

    All this has made choosing the right animation school extremely difficult. To help students navigate through the world of animation schools, we’ve put together the Top 100 most highly-regarded and sought after animation schools on the planet. This list of the Top 100 Schools in Animation, Gaming and Design was compiled via a mixture of school reviews, industry-reviewed lists like the Princeton Review, and via a survey of the animation industry professionals and recruiters from companies like Pixar, J.J. Sedelmaier and DreamWorks who were featured in our Interview Series. And without further ado, here are your Top 100 Schools in Animation, Gaming and Design:

    Let’s start this list off with a bang by beginning with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. This design school made our list because it is a tight-knit school that offers a fully customizable course load—but unlike some of their competitors they do it without school-defined majors. They definitely win the prize for being the most flexible program (or lackthereof) on this list. Only problem is: if you don’t like the education you get then you have only yourself to blame (and I suppose the mentor who helps you craft your personalized program). No worries though, their wide-selection of Film, Animation, Illustration and Graphic Design courses certainly won’t let you down.

    The University of Visual Arts in Tucson has a small faculty (with an excellent teacher-to-student ratio) and a small-art school vibe. But don’t let the size fool you, this highly-advanced visual arts school packs a wallop with their Graphic Design. Animation and Illustration programs. They also offer BFA degrees in Studio Art and Photography, an MFA degree in Studio Arts with three areas of emphasis, one of which is Motion Arts. Their animation and design courses are highly practical as they focus heavily on industry-dominating Flash software and character development.

    When your entire focus is animation, you get pretty good at it; when all you teach is animation, you get pretty good at that too. The Animation Workshop’s sole focus on animation has paid off as they have become the top Scandinavian animation school, and one of the best in Europe. The school has five departments, each focusing on a different element of animation; each department enrolls a limited number of students annually—so that they maintain their great teacher-to-student ratio. Despite their northerly location the school and faculty have fostered tight relationships with the European animation community and have landed positions for their graduates at DreamWorks in the U.S, Brown Bag Films in Ireland, Aardman in the U.K. Cartoon-Film in Germany, Folimage in France, BRB in Spain and more.

    The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) takes a unique approach to preparing their students to work in the animation industry, they require at least one (most students complete two) short film(s) before graduation. These short films are made in conjunction with the production, editing, sound and photography departments so the animation grads leave school with a professional-looking film; films that regularly score the school’s graduates entry level jobs at prominent studios across Europe. FAMU has two animation programs, a three-year bachelor’s program and a five-year master’s. Their master’s program in animation is extremely tough to get into though as they accept just five students annually.

    9Zeros in Spain hosts three four-year animation programs: Cartooning, 3D Animation and Stop Motion. The stop-motion program steals the show at this school though as the 400-hour program is good—and the only one on the continent. This boutique program accepts just 120 students a year. Included in the program is an internship with European-based studios that the school maintains close ties with and an end-of-the-program final project to add to their portfolio. The Spanish animation scene absorbs most of 9Zeros’ graduates.

    La Poudrière is an animation school created over a decade ago by France’s most-prominent animation studio, Folimage. The directors at Folimage designed La Poudrière’s program in an interesting way. there is no faculty. Instead the students are taught by the 60 to 80 guest lecturers that rotate through the campus annually. The school’s two-year animation program focuses heavily on animated film directing, has a max of 10 students per class and is taught primarily via supervised projects to ensure that students get the most hands-on experience possible and leave school with a hefty portfolio. Another interesting, and highly realistic, part of the program is that students are forced to create their work within given budgets and time schedules.

    The Art Center College of Design (often referred to simply as the ‘Art Center’) has been regularly listed as a top art/design school by BusinessWeek, U.S. News, DesignIntelligence, and U.S. News World Report. Their degree programs in Entertainment Design. Film. Fine Art. Graphic Design. Illustration and Interaction Design all offer tempting elements to aspiring animators, designers and game designers. Their courses are heavily influenced by pop culture, hand and life drawing and a mixture of emerging media.

    If living in Long Beach, California wasn’t enough to sell prospective design students on going to California State University Long Beach, then the program the school created would do it. Their BA and BFA degree programs in Graphic Design, Illustration and Studio Art offer interesting tracks in illustration and/or animation; meaning they train artists first, then turn them into animators. This strategy is working well because California’s top animation studios recruit from CSU Long Beach. They also offer interesting media courses in their Journalism and Mass Communications department.

    This little beauty was a favorite amongst the employers surveyed in our Interview Series. and was mentioned by many as a school they regularly recruit from. Can’t blame ’em really, because their BA degrees in Animation, Video/Digital art, Graphic Design and Illustration when combined with electives from their Studio Art, Video/Digital Art, Visual Communication and Graphic Design concentrations create superhero-like graduates (think: unstoppable).

    The National Institute of Design is India’s foremost institution teaching design and animation, and considering how good the animation talent is coming out of India these days, that says a lot. The school’s mingling courses in Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film Video Communication and Exhibition (Spatial) Design are turning out incredibly artsy animators that are providing steady competition for American animation studios. While nobody in animation and gaming likes to talk about outsourcing, NID is the school training the animation masters behind the trend, training artists as well as software experts. They’re good, real good.

    You will notice a massive amount of Vancouver animation schools making the list, but this should come as no surprise given their massively successful animation scene and ability to usurp a large amount of animation graduates. The Emily Carr University of Art and Design is another Vancouver-based art and design school to proudly make our list.
