What is hosted virtual desktop (HVD)? Definition from #virtual #desktop #infrastructure

#

hosted virtual desktop (HVD)

A hosted virtual desktop (HVD) is a user interface that connects to applications and data that are stored on a cloud provider’s servers rather than on the user’s computer or the corporate network. An HVD is sometimes referred to as a cloud-hosted virtual desktop.

Each desktop instance exists as a virtual machine (VM ) on the service provider’s servers. To the end users, the experience should be indistinguishable from one in which all their data and applications are local.

The HVD delivery model, also known as desktop as a service (DaaS ) offers a lot of benefits to the enterprise. The service provider is responsible for storage. backup. security and upgrades. Service providers generally offer redundancy, high availability, optimized power, and sometimes other features such as remote replication for data protection. The model also benefits a mobile workforce because employees can access their desktops from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Drawbacks to the HVD model include issues with visibility and control, as well as difficulty prioritizing DaaS traffic over the public Internet to ensure performance.

DaaS service providers include Desktone, Rackspace and TuCloud.

Clients Love the Convenience, Speed, and Accuracy of
Internet Proofreading from BusinessProofreading.com

Internet Proofreading Is Convenient

In this “I need it yesterday” world, you’re sure to agree with my clients that Internet proofreading is a blessing. The convenience of being able to simply email a message or attachment and have it returned to you polished and ready to impress is an absolute necessity. With Internet proofreading, all your copyediting can be handled quickly and professionally.

“In the advertising/copywriting business, I always hear from customers who are in a hurry for copyediting. It’s such a blessing to know that BusinessProofreading.com is available to help me out in a pinch. The convenience factor of being able to email or fax a project to Cathy and have it returned in just a short while is a real lifesaver!”

Internet Proofreading Is Fast

I constantly hear my clients’ kind words about quick turnaround. Internet proofreading, in and of itself, speeds up the process. And I always strive to meet your deadlines even if you have a rush job.

“Cathy Kessler has proven time and again to be a valuable asset in enhancing the effectiveness of many of my different types of written communications. I know that when I send something to Cathy for copyediting, not only will it be returned to me in a prompt manner, but also the document will be grammatically correct. Cathy’s helpful insights in the area of business proofreading have enabled me to clearly state what I want the reader to know, while doing it in a very straightforward, professional manner. I would highly recommend Cathy to anyone who understands the value of the well-edited written word.”

Internet Proofreading Is Accurate

Most of my clients rave about the accuracy of Internet proofreading. Because the copyediting is done in digital format, the results are more reliable than marking the changes on paper and then having to make adjustments on your document later. If you’d like to see the changes I’ve made while copyediting, just ask, and I’ll gladly mark them for you.

“It’s really hard to find your own mistakes, especially when you know how text/copy should read. I always run all my projects past Cathy’s meticulous eyes before releasing a project to press or production. On more than one occasion, she has found typos or grammatical errors that would have cost me money and aggravation to reprint, not to mention client dissatisfaction as a result, I’ve never had to reprint a project. I would highly recommend Cathy’s copyediting and proofreading services to anyone who writes or uses text/copy of any kind. She’s the best!!”

Top 10: Remote Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts

Have you ever been using one of your RDP sessions to manage a remote system and found that you needed to press Ctrl+Alt+Del on the remote system but you couldn t remember how to do it inside the Remote Desktop window? Just pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del sends the keystrokes to your local desktop, which certainly isn t what you wanted. If you ve ever had this problem, then this Top 10 column is your answer. In this column, I show you 10 handy keyboard shortcuts you can use in your remote desktop sessions.

10. Ctrl+Alt+plus sign (+) Dealing with capturing screen images from a Remote Desktop session can be a mystery. If you press Print Screen, you get an image of your local desktop not the remote desktop. Pressing the Ctrl+Alt+plus sign (+) keyboard shortcut captures a snapshot of the entire client window area of Remote Desktop and is the same as pressing Print Screen on your local desktop.

9. Ctrl+Alt+minus sign (-) Sometimes you don t want an image of the entire desktop; sometimes you want just a selected window. Pressing the Ctrl+Alt+minus sign (-) keyboard shortcut captures a snapshot of just the active window within the remote desktop session. This key combination is the same as pressing Alt+Print Screen on your local desktop.

8. Alt+Home Pressing the Alt+Home keyboard combination with Remote Desktop displays the Start menu on the remote system. The Start menu gives you quick access to the different programs installed on the remote system. This key combination is the same as pressing the Windows key on your local desktop.

7. Alt+Delete Pressing the Alt+Delete keyboard combination in the Remote Desktop session opens the Windows menu of an application running on the remote system. The Windows menu is typically displayed under the icon in the extreme upper left corner of most Windows applications, and it lets you move and resize the application.

6. Ctrl+Alt+Break Sometimes you might want the Remote Desktop window to be displayed in full-screen mode just as if you were using your local desktop. If you want to toggle the Remote Desktop session between a window and a full-screen display, you can press the Ctrl+Alt+Break keyboard combination.

5. Ctrl+Alt+Pause Like the previous item, the Ctrl+Alt+Pause keyboard combination switches between full screen and windowed mode. However, with this keyboard shortcut, the remote desktop window remains at its standard size and doesn t fill the entire local desktop. Instead, it s displayed on a black background.

4. Alt+Insert Sometimes you want a quick way to switch between the different programs that you have running. Pressing the Alt+Insert keyboard combination lets you cycle through the programs on the remote system in the order that they were opened. This process is the same as using Alt+Tab on your local desktop.

3. Alt+Page Down Another way to cycle through the running programs on your Remote Desktop session is to use the Alt+Page Down keyboard shortcut. Pressing this key combination lets you switch between programs on the remote desktop session, moving from right to left in the Windows task switcher. This is the same as Alt+Shift+Tab on your standard desktop.

2. Alt+Page Up Pressing Alt+Page Up lets you switch between programs on the Remote Desktop session, moving from left to right in the Windows task switcher. This is the same as Alt+Tab on your standard desktop.

1. Ctrl+Alt+End One of the most common yet hard-to-find things that you ll need to do in a Remote Desktop session is to send a Ctrl+Alt+Del signal to the remote system. Press Ctrl+Alt+End if you need to send a Ctrl+Alt+Del keystroke combination to the remote system. This keystroke opens the Microsoft Windows Security dialog box, which lets you lock the computer, log off, change your password, and start Task Manager.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Enjoy 24/7/365 availability, reliability, optimal speed and performance of the service with 99.96% average uptime. SaaS is hosted on the vast ISL Online Cloud Network, which is based on cloud computing technologies and connects servers from more than 50 data centres worldwide. It is a perfect combination of ease of use and excellent performance. The only thing you need to start using it is a valid account.

Just enter your username and password to host a session on our network of servers.

Server License

Meet strict security requirements, plus enjoy privacy and full independence by installing ISL Online on your own server(s). All remote connections are then established through the server(s) in your company, keeping all data such as user information or session history in a closed corporate environment. It is easy to add external authentication through RADIUS, Microsoft Active Directory, Novell eDirectory and OpenLDAP; what’s more, it also offers extensive user management, software customisation and integration options. It’s a snap to set up and maintain, though it requires an administrator.

In order to install and configure the ISL Online Server License properly, you should be familiar with network and server administration. You need to install the remote desktop server application named ISL Conference Proxy on a server (Windows or Linux) in your company and open a few ports in your firewall.

To set up your own ISL Online remote desktop server you need to have:

  1. Windows or Linux server (recommended not to share IIS or Apache server)
ISL Conference Proxy – Server Requirements
  2. Free public IP on your router
  3. Administrator to install the software and configure the firewall

Private Cloud

Cloud computing benefits combined in the ISL Online Private Cloud bring you the best remote desktop and web conferencing services. Particularly larger organisations using the Server License might consider setting up several servers and connecting them into a corporate Internet communications network, a Private Cloud. Corporate Private Cloud Network includes at least two ISL Conference Proxy (ICP) installations and is fully scalable. More ICP servers can be added to the Private Cloud network anytime in order to expand the capacity of the system (double, triple etc.).

ISL Conference Proxy servers may be installed in a single data centre or several company’s data centres across the country or worldwide. You may decide to host the Private Cloud on your own servers or just ask us to provide you with the pre-installed and pre-configured Private Boxes.

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization Download #microsoft #enterprise #desktop #virtualization, #download #microsoft #enterprise

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) enhances deployment and management of Virtual PC images on a Windows Desktop, while also providing a seamless user experience of a Virtual PC environment, independent of the local desktop configuration and operating system (OS).

MED-V leverages Microsoft Virtual PC to provide an enterprise solution for desktop virtualization. With MED-V, you can easily create, deliver and manage corporate Virtual PC images on any Windows desktop.

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization is an integral component of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (aka MDOP), a dynamic solution available to Software Assurance customers, which will help reduce application deployment costs, enables delivery of applications as services, and helps to better manage and control enterprise desktop environments.

Enable legacy applications and accelerate upgrades to new operating systems

Incompatibility of legacy applications with the new version of Microsoft Windows can often delay enterprise upgrades to the latest version of Windows. Testing and migrating applications can take a while, and users are unable to take advantage of the new capabilities and enhancements offered by the new OS.

By delivering applications in a Virtual PC that runs a previous version of the OS (e.g. Windows XP or Windows 2000), MED-V removes the barriers to OS upgrades, and allows administrators to complete testing and to deal with incompatible applications after the upgrade.

From the user’s perspective, these applications are accessible from the standard desktop Start menu and appear side-by-side with native applications so there is minimal change to the user experience.

Known Issues:

File downloads do not follow web redirection rules.

If the LAN adapter is disabled when a Workspace configured in bridge mode is started, and the adapter is later enabled, the network will not resume. Restarting the Workspace solves this issue.

Workspace image download may be delayed if Windows update is running when it is started.

When the user is required to change his domain password in order to login to Windows inside the Workspace, the client receives a notification about using the wrong username/password, rather than a notification that he should change his domain password.

When expanding a DOS application (e.g. cmd.exe) window to full screen, the application window disappears.

When the domain password is changed while the Workspace is running, and the Workspace is restarted, a wrong password notification appears on the client and the user is required to re-enter the new password.

When installing MED-V using the command line, it is configured by default to launch after installation. This causes problems when installing MED-V in the system context. In this case it is required to use the START_MEDV=0 parameter.

When working in full desktop mode, manual location changes of icons on the desktop are not saved between Workspace sessions.

Multiple versions of the same Workspace created on the same machine are always assigned the same unique name. This may cause problems when multiple virtual machines with the same name attempt to join the domain.

When transferring very large files using the file transfer tool, the transfer may fail.

VDI at the Desktop: Thin Clients or PCs for Better TCO?

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), a platform that uses various virtualization technology aspects to implement a rich IT platform through a central, virtualized back end that hosts virtual machines (VMs).

VDI architectures include everything from server virtualization to storage, application virtualization, connections, protocols and more. One of the last aspects of VDI typically considered is the desktop and its user.

VDI requires upfront costs, so by the time IT gets to the desktop side; further upfront costs need to be minimized. Keeping existing PCs appears to be “cheaper” then switching to thin clients for VDI. Is that really the case? Do thin clients or PCs for VDI have a better total cost of ownership (TCO)?

Comparing Desktop Hardware – Components, Factors, and Cost

A PC also known as a thick client, is comprised of a lot of components compared to a thin client. With each PC you have (at minimum) a hard drive, media ports, OS, applications and anti-virus software. Then a thin client only has the thin client OS and a small about of applications if required.

PCs typically have a 4 year expected life where thin clients have a 6 year expected life. The media ports and hard drive open up the possibilities for a security breach. At the same time the user then can install their software which also increases security risks. PCs are typically un-managed desktop devices limiting the security capabilities for the desktop user. Thin clients are locked down devices eliminated the users’ ability to download unless permitted and all devices can be managed through a thin client management console such as Echo .

When looking at hardware cost it’s simple. Thin Clients are cheaper then PCs. PCs typically start pricing at around $599. With thin clients, the cost per unit really depends on the unit each user requires. Someone whose daily tasks entail the use of simple applications such as outlook and they can use a device such as the Ceptor that will come in around $99. Where as a user that runs multiple applications continuously may require a more advanced device that supports high performance visuals such as the Veriton N2110G and comes in under $300.

Exploring the Cost per User for VDI

In most VDI deployments, organizations transition from PCs to thin clients over time. While every organization is different, we have typically seen around 1/3 of VDI users move to thin client devices and the other 2/3s utilize software options such as VDI Blaster. This software converts PCs that are towards the end of their life spans to make them (functionally) into thin clients.

Then there are software licensing costs that are always tough to estimate. Vendors have many different programs and license types and many customers are able to negotiate their own special pricing. However on average we see this cost is roughly $150 per user. But for Microsoft licensing, customers only need to purchase VDA licenses for the percentage of their devices that are thin clients or not covered under Microsoft SA licensing as they start replacing their PCs over time.

*The initial cost analysis that follows is based on 1/3 of the devices as thin clients and the other 2/3 as repurposed PCs.

Hardware Cost

  • Thin Client Software for Physical PCs (66% of devices) = $35 per repurposed PC
  • Thin Clients (33% of devices) = $200 per thin client
  • Average Cost Per User of Thin Client Device or Software = $66 ($200 x 33% of users) + $23 ($35 x 66%) = $89 per user

Licensing Costs

  • VDI Software = $150 per user
  • Microsoft VDA License (33% of devices) = $33 per user

Overall VDI Initial Cost per User Comparison

Thin Client

PC

When creating VDI environment, no one environment is the same and each will have different requirements and priorities. The process itself can be time consuming and complex. It is extremely important to look at all the technologies and aspects involved right down to the desktop. Request a more complete TCO analysis on your specific environment. We take real company data and give you a report as shown below.

Ulteo Opensource Virtual Desktop

Ulteo is an open source program that does the same thing as Citrx. Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop v2.0 provides an open architecture to deliver securely any Linux and Windows applications to any device of the enterprise through the web browser, from anywhere. Integration in a Microsoft environment is fully supported. This is a pretty cool program and I use it to make a standard desktop interface that I can access from several different machines and have all of the data, and changes I have done on other computers. I have set this program up and I like it, I don t have the need to do large scale production environments with Ulteo. However it is cool to set up you virtual desktop and be able to log on to it to make changes to work or other projects and have the ability to access it in the same format from any computer on the internet. I am not sure of any kind of security problems that may exist but I would recommend checking it out.

Ulteo OVD allows Linux applications to be run on a Windows machine through a web browser along with Windows apps. The Linux applications are simply installed on the Linux server and you can publish it for use on the virtual desktop. The Windows applications require a Windows terminal server. I set it up and got everything working great, however you run into the licensing that is required for terminal connections so I didn t do any thing past the eval period. According to their web site future versions will not require a terminal server. You just install the Ulteo agent and register the Windows server with the session manager portion of the Ulteo software and publish the applications to the applications manager.
