How to successfully recover data from a failed RAID

Recovering data from a failed RAID can easily turn into a costly ordeal. Please read this page carefully before proceeding. If you would like to get help from experts, please consider using our fee-based RAID recovery service.

First determine whether the RAID is hardware-based or software-based. The recovery procedures are very different.

Recovering a hardware RAID

First determine if the problem is caused by the underlying RAID mechanism. If it is not, follow the simpler recovery procedures for an ordinary drive. The following causes of problem are not related to the RAID:

  • Virus attacks.
  • The volume being deleted, resized, reformatted or otherwise changed in Disk Manager or other disk management utilities.

If the problem seems to be in the RAID mechanism, determine the operating state of the RAID and take the appropriate actions.

Avoid the most common mistakes that may cause data to become unrecoverable.

Hardware RAID operating states

Current status is normal.
No controller or disk errors.
No recent change in RAID configuration.

RAID is displayed as a single disk.
Volume configuration has not been changed (screenshot ).

Creating Custom Active Directory Attributes

how to create custom attributes in AD and link/assign/associate them to object Classes (computers, Users, etc.)

First let me give credit to Farhan Kazi for a great article on how to do this with at post at http://fkazi.blogspot.com/2013/04/creating-custom-active-directory_27.html

A customer requested that I implement a solution to help keep their Active Directory clean of old/inactive Computer objects. While this is something I ve done manually many times, I finally have a customer willing to automate the solution. As part of that exercise I wanted to write the Previous OU and some other data to the AD Computer object. I intended to use ExtensionAttribute15; however, I quickly realized that this attribute did not exist. As I discovered, ExtensionAttribute[1-15] are created by Microsoft Exchange which was not part of this environment. So, I needed a new field to store the data. Here is what I did.

Basic steps to create a new attribute and associate it to a Class / object

  • Logon to a domain controller with administrative and Schema Admin rights
  • Open a command prompt as an Administrator
  • register the Schema MMC snap-in by running regsvr32 schmMgmt.dll
  • generate the OID via PowerShell or VBScript
  • Open Active Directory Schema mmc snap-in
  • Right-click on the Attributes folder, and Create New
  • Create an attribute for the Previous OU
    • Description: customPreviousOU
    • Common Name: customPreviousOU
    • X.500 OID: copy/paste from the script .1
    • Syntax: Unicode String
    • Attribute is active: checked
  • Create an attribute for the Disabled On date
    • Description: customDisabledOn
    • Common Name: customDisabledOn
    • X.500 OID: copy/paste from the script .2
    • Syntax: Generalized Time
    • Attribute is active: checked
  • Assigned the Attributes to a Class (object type)
    • Open the properties of Computer in the Classes folder
    • In the Attributes tab select Add and select the new attributes. Select OK to save and close.

The new attribute(s) can be viewed / modified in ADSI Edit or via a script. Below are a few PowerShell commands to view and modify the custom attributes.

Interstate Directory of Horse Motels

About

Over the past decade, we ve traveled across the country several times with our horses in tow. While the experience is always a fun adventure, the planning process often is not. We ve spent hours studying horse motel directories both in books and online, and these are wonderful resources when searching for horse motels by state. However, unless you are pretty well-versed in the geography of each state and how specific towns line up with the interstates crossing them, it can be a daunting task to find motels at the appropriate intervals when crossing country. An interstate traveler can spend hours researching a cross-country route, calculating mileage between destinations through multiple pages of state maps, to make a ‘guestimate’ as to which horse motels will be the best choice after a long day’s driving.

Because of our experience traveling with horses, we decided that it would be best to create an online directory of horse motels and bed breakfasts which will allow you to choose a route based on the U.S. Interstate System. Since listed horse layover facilities must be located near a major U.S. Interstate to qualify for inclusion in the Interstate Horse Motel Directory, you can be assured your chosen horse motel will be located within easy driving distance of the route you re traveling definitely a plus after a long day s driving!

We ve leveraged the power of Google Maps to assist you in your travel arrangements. If you find a horse motel that does not offer accommodations for people, we offer a gateway to find local motels as well.

It is not our intent to make existing directories obsolete as they are wonderful resources when searching for horse motels by state (however, you can use the search box in the top bar to search by state be sure to use the state abbreviation and it will bring up all pages that have references to that state). We d just like to make the process a little easier for those of us who plan our travel by interstate. Our intent is to be the most comprehensive directory of Interstate equine layover facilities in the U.S.A. and an invaluable resource for your travels. It is our sincere hope that this online directory will give you peace of mind and ease of planning for your next trip with your horses.

A penetration test is done to evaluate the security of a computer system or network by simulating an attack by a malicious user / hacker. The process involves active exploitation of security vulnerabilities that may be present due to poor or improper system configuration, known and / or unknown hardware or software flaws, or operational weaknesses in process or design.

This analysis is carried out from the position of a potential attacker, to determine feasibility of an attack and the resulting business impact of a successful exploit. Usually this is presented with recommendations for mitigation or a technical solution.

Demoting a Active Directory Domain Controller in Windows 2012

by TechiBee on September 6, 2012

In one of my previous articles I showed you how to install and configure active directory in Windows Server 2012. In this post, I will talk about step-by-step removal of active directory from a domain controller in Windows Server 2012.

Like the change in installation procedure of active directory, demotion/removal also will not depend on dcpromo. The demotion of domain controller in a windows server 2012 domain contains two main operations.

  1. Removing the configuration of active directory from Domain Controller
  2. Removal of active directory related roles

1. Removing the configuration of active directory from Domain Controller

Follow the below procedure to uninstall active directory from a windows server 2012 using Server Manager wizards.

  • In Server Manager, click Manage. and then click Remove Roles and Features .
  • On the Before you begin page, review the information and then click Next .
  • On the Select destination server page, click the name of the server that you want to remove AD DS from and then click Next .

  • On the Remove server roles page, clear the check box for Active Directory Domain Services and then on the Remove Roles and Features Wizard dialog box, click Remove Features. and then click Next .

  • The Remove Roles and Features Wizard returns the following validation error:
  • The validation error appears by design because the AD DS server role binaries cannot be removed while the server is running as a domain controller. Click Demote this domain controller .
  • On the Credentials page, specify credentials to remove AD DS. If previous attempts to remove AD DS on this domain controller have failed, then you can select the Force the removal of this domain controller check box. For more information about forcing the removal of AD DS, see Forcing the removal of AD DS. If you are removing the last domain controller in the domain, click Last domain controller in the domain check box. Click Next .

  • On the Warnings page, review the information about the roles hosted by the domain controller, click Proceed with removal. and then click Next .

  • On the Removal Options page: (Note: this page will not appear if you chose Force Removal of Domain Controller)
    • If you plan to reinstall the domain controller using the same domain controller account, click Retain the domain controller metadata .
    • In addition, if either of the following two options appears, it must be selected before you can proceed.
      • If you are removing the last DNS server that hosts the zones hosted on this domain controller, click Remove this DNS zone (this is the last server that hosts the zone) .
      • If you want to delete the application partitions, click Remove application partitions.
        • NOTE: This option will appear only if this is last server for DNS zone

  • Click Next .
  • On the New Administrator Password page, type and confirm the password for the local Administrator account for the server, and then click Next .
  • On the Review Options page, click Demote .
  • The server will restart automatically to complete the domain controller demotion. Continue with the next steps, which are needed to fully remove the AD DS server role binaries after the machine restarts to complete the demotion.

2. Removal of active directory related roles

  • After completion of demotion of Domain controller and try removing the Active Directory Domain Services and DNS Server roles as mentioned in step 1 above and this time it should get succeeded without any errors.
  • Removal of roles from Server Manager completes the Domain Controller Demotion Process in Windows Server 2012

Please refer to this technet article if you still have any questions about demotion of domain controller. Most of the above steps are copied from the technet site since I hate to write my own sometimes. I tried to give a good perception about demotion process with my understanding about process in the beginning of the article and with a bunch of screenshots to help you understanding the steps.

Hope this helps and happy learning.

Active Directory domain (AD domain)

An Active Directory domain is a collection of objects within a Microsoft Active Directory network. An object can be a single user or a group or it can be a hardware component, such as a computer or printer. Each domain holds a database containing object identity information.

Active Directory domains are grouped in a tree structure; a group of Active Directory trees is known as a forest. which is the highest level of organization within Active Directory. Active Directory domains can have multiple child domains, which in turn can have their own child domains. Authentication within Active Directory works through a transitive trust relationship.

Active Directory domains can be identified using a DNS name, which can be the same as an organization’s public domain name. a sub-domain or an alternate version (which may end in .local). While Group Policy can be applied to an entire domain, it is typical to apply policies to sub-groups of objects known as organizational units (OUs ). All object attributes, such as usernames, must be unique within a single domain and, by extension, an OU.

Active Directory Structure Guidelines – Part 1 #active #directory #ou

Active Directory Structure Guidelines Part 1

I have been doing Active Directory and Group Policy work for a while now and I have developed my own set of rules that I try to use where ever possible. So below I have written down all my rules in no particular order for you to go over and use for yourself. You may only chose to use only some of these rules or you might want to use them all depending on your circumstance. This is a two part series where I will first talk about designing you Active Directory Organisation Unit structure and then in part 2 (Best Practice: Group Policy Design Guidelines – Part 2 ) I will discuss some more ideas for applying Group Policy to the OU structure.

I want to be clear that these are only guidelines and not rules that need to be strictly adhered to. In almost all case there are exceptions to these guidelines and you might even find your self implementing them in a hybrid approach. I intend for this web page to be updated on a regular basis as none of these rules are set in stone and thing obviously change all the time.

Active Directory Organisation Unit Design Guidelines

Before you begin

Before you begin the process of designing your Group Policy (and AD) structure you should first try to fully understand the requirements of the environment. Below are some points that I recommend that you find out before you begin:

  • How is the company structured
  • Where are the physical sites
  • Who support the organisation
    • What are the support boundaries (e.g. Location and/or Workstations and/or Servers )
  • What are the computer types
    • Highly Secured
    • Standard SOE
    • Process Control/Automation
    • Server Roles (e.g. Exchange, SQL or File Server)
  • Network Topology
    • Bandwidth / Latency
  • Who will be responsible for Group Policy changes
  • What are the security requirements (password policy, auditing etc.)
  • What is the change management process
  • What are the auditing requirements for Group Policy

Keep it short

When naming your Organisational Unit make sure the name you are using are short and to the point. There is technically nothing wrong with having long OU names but it is a pain to document and just leave you open to more chance of references then name wrong as their are more characters to type.

Be consistent

Don’t mix your terms when naming our OU Structure as this leads to confusion if for IT admins that leads them to believe that something might be different about the two OU’s where they actually contain the same type of objects. The example below shows how two different sites calls the OU for the computer in the organisation Workstations and Desktops.

I wanted to include some informtaion about the naming of OUs where it says : When naming your Organisational Unit make sure the name you are using are short and to the point There may be technical limitations that may affect long names.

During binds to the directory, simple LDAP bind operations limit the distinguished name (also known as DN) of the user to 255 total characters. If you attempt a simple LDAP bind with more than 255 characters, you might experience authentication errors

Thank you this is very much appreciated. I am working on a deployment for a organization with 4 distinct locations that includes a marriage to Apple OpenDirectory as well as FreeBSD OpenLDAP. Having a well thought out explanation like this is fantastic. It has helped me explain the complexities of designing the right solution to all members of the team. I still have not drafted the final plan but it is giving some great ideas so hopefully I can achieve this shortly.

Cheers,
Mikel King

Apple Open Directory. Don t go there, it s a trap! Recommend to use AD + extend schema to support OS X

I m new to Active Directory and this is very usefull.
I have a question about the Resource Structure Example image sample above .
I know that it is only an example but :
the Groups OU contains Roles and Resources groups.
What they means?
Does Roles contains groups like Officers, Employees, etc?

Thank you very much.

i have configured one domain. i want configure some

group policy by organzation units. i have created ou.and i move some user in that ou. but i dont know how to

link this ou with group policy i did try many times but i did not sucess any one help me

    Active Directory Structure Guidelines – Part 1 #active #directory #ou

    #

On the more serious end, there are millions of people that have debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. These people need around-the-clock supervision, medication management, and help with just about every daily activity.

This is where an assisted living facility can help.

Assisted Living comes in many forms and settings, with widely varying degrees of services, amenities and cost. depending on the facility. An assisted living facility may be in a more rural or country setting that is very home-like. On the other hand, an

We recommend that if you are looking into assisted living for yourself, or a friend or loved one, that you take ample time to research each facility thoroughly. Visiting the facility you might be interested in is also of utmost importance, as well as checking health and safety records and possible violations that have occurred with the facility.

    Happy Trails!
