Prendi e consumi in stanza.

Why and when the iPad is the best e-reader

When the Kindle appeared, readers realized that years of false starts and empty promises were over, that the e-reading revolution had really and finally arrived. And then, a kind of Cold War set in between two kinds of readers: bibliophiles who insist that wood pulp—the musty smell of real paper!—is the best way to read, and the rest of us, who increasingly love the convenience of the digital ebook era.

They’re both right.

For the first time in history, when we sit down to read a book, we’re faced with more than simply a choice of what to read—we must also decide how to read it. Perhaps you’ve found your favorite reading method, and tend to stick with it. But the truth is that different mediums offer different strengths, which are in turn tuned to different types of reading. Wedging yourself into a corner with just one device for all types of reading can deny you the pleasures and advantages of the other.

In the last two years, I’ve read books in numerous ways: a desktop computer, a netbook, my iPhone, my iPad, an e-ink Kindle, and—believe it or not—a good old-fashioned paper book. (I even listened to Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom with the Audible.com iPhone app.) The strength of those first three options, in most cases, was that they’re available: If you need to read something now, they’ll do in a pinch.

Mostly, though, I stick to the iPad, a basic model e-ink Kindle, or paper. The iPad is the closest thing to my default reading device, for reasons I’ll get to in a second, but it’s never an automatic choice. Why? Because each has its advantages.

For studious reading. I prefer the iPad. Yes, I’ve been out of college for years now, but in one of my other journalistic pursuits I co-host a podcast featuring interviews with authors of books on politics and policy. That means lots of reading, lots of highlighting, and lots of note-taking. The iPad is clearly best at the latter two tasks, especially the note-taking. And it keeps getting better in that regard: Amazon recently updated its Kindle iOS app to offer several different colors of highlighter ink, making it easier to color-code your notes in a book as you go. That’s a feature shared by Apple’s iBooks app as well, as both companies work to appeal to the educational and textbook markets.

This isn’t necessarily deep reading: The iPad facilitates note-taking and skimming—the kind of reading done by college students. But at the end of a book, it’s so much easier to go back, find your notes, and give yourself a Cliff’s Notes overview of what you just read. If you’re in information-processing mode, the iPad is usually the way to go. Making and navigating these sorts of notes on an e-ink Kindle is painful.

For light reading. the basic e-ink Kindle is the way to go: It’s the cheap dime-store paperback that’s always with you. If you’re not into deep note-taking, but merely want to enjoy a good story, the vanilla Kindle makes good sense. The push-button page-turning often rewards propulsive forward progress more than it does a deep dive, but you might not notice if you’re reading the latest Harlan Coben mystery, say.

The e-ink Kindle is also great for “lack of light” reading: Studies show that backlit displays, like the kind you get on the iPad and other tablets, reduce melatonin production and can disrupt your sleep—making the iPad or any other screen a bad idea for bedtime reading. If you’re curling up with a story at night, this is often the best way to go.

Of course, “light” also has another meaning—the Kindle often offers the most ergonomically friendly version of a book, as well. When Robert Caro’s most recent volume about President Lyndon Johnson came out last year—weighing in at a hefty 736 pages—there was little temptation to buy that sucker in hardcover: My poor wrists would’ve rebelled, and my back was in no mood to carry it around in a bag everywhere. The iPad would’ve been a significant weight reduction, but I was also reading the book for pleasure instead of study. The even-lighter Kindle proved the ideal platform for such a monster.

Of course, the Kindle has lost some of its advantage on this front thanks to the advent of the iPad mini. On the other hand, the Kindle doesn’t offer easy access to Facebook or Twitter, either—and when I’m in a reading mood, the lack of electronic distraction the Kindle affords is welcome.

Of course, paper books don’t provide electronic distraction either. That’s why they’re often the best device, still, for old-fashioned immersive reading. The benefits here are admittedly less substantial, more theoretical and romantic, but I believe in them nonetheless. Paper books don’t require batteries. They don’t claim your attention with social media, games, or movies contained within. They simply are. And in the case of older books, those worn with time, one can feel oneself joining a lineage of readers. That’s not quite the case with today’s ebooks—though changes to the way used ebooks are traded and sold might someday endow those circuits and data with the romance of old-fashioned books. It hasn’t happened yet. Sometimes you want to read, stare out the window, read, then stare out the window. Books are still the best tool for that approach.

But is there a best best?

At this point, yes: The iPad mini. It’s got all the power of the iPad and its best reading apps; it features the ergonomic joy of the Kindle, and, well—if you want immersive reading free of distraction—you can always go ahead and turn your iPad to Airplane Mode to free yourself from distractions.

Otherwise, it’s OK to accept some messiness in your reading life. Don’t just download the next book on your reading list; consider how you want to experience it, and let that decision be your guide.

Mechanics of active surfaces

Guillaume Salbreux and Frank Jülicher

This paper presents a general covariant theory of the mechanical behavior of active surfaces, driven out of equilibrium by internal molecular processes. The results are valid for surfaces of arbitrary shape and lead to a classification into five different symmetry classes based on the properties of the surface.

Mapping of the stochastic Lotka-Volterra model to models of population genetics and game theory

George W. A. Constable and Alan J. McKane

This paper introduces a mapping between models for ecology and population genetics, the stochastic Lotka-Volterra model and the Moran model. The authors find that, under conditions of weak selection and large population size, such a mapping is feasible. This promises to be useful in exploring other features of interest in population genetics and evolutionary science.

EDITORS SUGGESTION

Proof of the finite-time thermodynamic uncertainty relation for steady-state currents

Jordan M. Horowitz and Todd R. Gingrich

This paper presents the finite-time version of the thermodynamic uncertainty relation for nonequilibrium steady states, which sets a bound on the magnitude of current fluctuations. The authors use a methodology that is similar to the proof for the long-time limit, but with large-deviation theory applied to an ensemble of many copies.

EDITORS SUGGESTION

Severe population collapses and species extinctions in multihost epidemic dynamics

Sergei Maslov and Kim Sneppen

In this paper, the authors extend a model for the spreading of infectious diseases to explore the propagation of epidemics through more than one species. Their mathematical model highlights the importance of cross-species interactions, and shows how a significant imbalance in population could have far-reaching implications for the survival rates.

6 Easy Ecommerce Shopping Carts for Small Business Websites

An ecommerce shopping cart is the heartbeat of any online retail site. When shopping for a shopping cart, it’s important to choose one that can be customized to match your business and be flexible enough to grow with your business.

Shopping cart software serves a number of roles on a business website. It acts as an online store product catalog, provides the customer user interface, handles the ordering process and is the interface among the company website, the back-end inventory infrastructure and the payment gateway.

Some small business merchants, when venturing into the world of ecommerce, will start with hosted ecommerce software. These fully-featured and hosted platforms provide everything from domain name registration to the tools you need to build an ecommerce website, all from one vendor. While hosted ecommerce is easy and secure, it doesn’t give online retailers a lot of control, since most functions are managed by the ecommerce service provider.

If total control is what you want, an option for tech-savvy business owners is to integrate a standalone shopping cart to add ecommerce to a business website. These shopping carts are a good choice for small businesses that already host their own secure websites and have in-house technical expertise to configure and manage ecommerce operations.

Here are six fully-featured options for anyone investing in ecommerce shopping cart software for a small-to-midsize business (SMB). Most carts can be either integrated with existing websites or used to create a new site or storefront.

1. 3D Cart: Design Templates, Business Management Tools

3dCart shopping carts serve as ecommerce storefronts. If you already have a website, 3dCart can import the existing design or migrate your business from Yahoo Stores, Miva, X-Cart and others. 3dcart provides customizable design templates as well as business management tools for order processing, shipping, sales reporting and other business functions.

3dCart Pricing starts at $19.99 per month, which is suitable for low-traffic websites with up to 100 products. A Gold account for medium-traffic websites with up to 1,000 products will cost $49.99 per month. All accounts include free technical support.

2. AgoraCart: A Secure, Open-Source Shopping Cart

AgoraCart can support your own code base or can be built using a series of templates. AgoraCart features include customizable store designs, unlimited products, multiple tax rates, more than 10 payment gateways and PCI compliance. The free community edition (version 5.2.x) is supported only though online community forums. Meanwhile, the Gold Version of AgoraCart (6.x Gold) is available for $49.95 and provides additional features and support.

3. Avactis: The Visual Shopping Cart

The Avactis ecommerce shopping cart requires no programming skills to set up or manage— when designing or customizing your website, you use a visual CSS Editor and visual layout editor.

Avactis can be integrated with existing websites or used to create a new website and storefront. The shopping cart software offers a number of management tools and useful ecommerce features for merchants, including price-based discounting, customer reviews, and Facebook integration.

The free Avactis shopping cart software is PHP-based and is embeddable in existing PHP sites. You can upgrade to obtain additional features; one-time payments for Avactis shopping carts range from $249 to $449.

4. CubeCart: Reporting Options, Sage Integration

CubeCart gives small business owners many reporting and customer management options. The store administration dashboard lets you set product options, view sales and inventory data, manage customer accounts and view sales reports. The sales reporting tool, meanwhile, allows you to display and export custom sales reports for third-party spreadsheet software and integrates with Sage Accounting software.

CubeCart Lite is a free cart that can be used for up to 100 customers and 250 orders. The paid version, CubeCart Pro, offers all features with no limits and provides access to the code for a one-time payment of $180. Other services, including copyright removal and upgrade services, are also available.

5. ProductCart: Hundreds of Shopping Cart Features

EarlyImpact’s ProductCart is PCI compliant and features hundreds of ecommerce shopping cart options for design, functionality and back-end management. If you’re just getting started with ecommerce, you can use ProductCart’s design tools to create a new online store.

Cannon Fuse sells a complete line of supplies for the pyrotechnics builder. The company’s ecommerce site is powered by EarlyImpact’s ProductCart software.

Highlights of the cart include advanced order management, store administration tools and marketing features. To help businesses better manage an online ecommerce presence, ProductCart integrates with a number of applications, including FedEx label printing and QuickBooks .

The license for ProductCart (Standard version) is $695. The Build to Order version, which includes a product configurator for more complex products and services, is $1,495. Other services for installation, technical support, hosting and mobile commerce are also available.

6. Zen Cart: Community-Contributed Additions

The open-source ecommerce shopping cart known as Zen Cart provides community-contributed additions to the software than can be applied to your shop. Plenty of documentation and help with your cart is readily available in the community forums, too.

Designed by shop owners, programmers, designers and consultants, this cart features a template-based system to select a design for your cart and to configure product categories, sales discounts and shipping and payment options. Nearly every piece of information about your products can be customized and managed within the Zen Cart Admin view.

Zen Cart v1.5.0 requires PHP 5.2.14, MySQL 4.1.3 and Apache 2.0 (or higher). It can run on Windows/IIS servers, but Linux/Apache servers are recommended. For those who need help with ZenCart, the product’s website provides a list of affiliated service providers.

Key Colony Beach Motel

This was a really great place to stay for 3 days! Amazing beach/water access for a low cost per night.

You can roam next store and get a drink to bring to over.

In the middle of the keys so great central point.

Rooms are what they are. You are at a motel for $111/night. Nothing fancy but decent.

My only 1 negative- there was carpet in Our room which is not great for a sandy beach motel. I woke up with some bites on my leg that didn t ever itch (meaning they weren t misquotes ) and when we left, my boyfriend and I had little red bites all over our feet. Hard to say if it was the hotel, beach or whatever. But just a warning.

The motel, view from the water

The beach at key colony beach motel

Stay away from this dump.sunday morning the manager,or the person in charge was drunk. 9:00 am at work drunk. He was ao drunk he had children checking people in and out. It was funny, but also very sad, The owners should be notified. The room was full of cockroaches
realy disgusting. The problem with the small cockroaches is
you sometimes take them back home with you.

Be carefull jumping in the water

I will give 5 stars because our view from our ocean front room is amazing and the beach is nice and the pool. Its a very laid back place to stay and its not overly crowded. We are here for 7 nights and we re half way through our trip. Yes, the motel needs a major renovation and upgrades but its an older motel. Don t stay here if you re too picky with everything being brand new. This isnt something that bothers us. It is really clean and has NO bugs and that is what we look for. The private beach is nice so that we dont have to drive anywhere. You are close to everything and will be able to either walk or drive to a few different places to eat in key colony.

View from our room window.

I really enjoyed our stay. Clean room, basic amenities, and hasn t been updated. I really enjoyed that our bathroom still had the original curved tiles from its past- love it when those things can be preserved. Small private beachfront with ample seating. Liquor store next door. Quiet street. Amazing rate- we paid $144 after all taxes. Would stay again!

Our original bathroom. Love the tiles! Very clean.

LOVED this motel. A little slice of heaven. The rate was only $100 for a motel room just steps away from a private beach for motel guests. ANY room you get is such a very short walk to the beach and wonderful swimming pool. If you forget something in your room, no problem! You can pop back to your room in 15 seconds.

There are ample beachside lounge adirondack chairs and tiki huts for shade with tables chairs under them. The motel was clean, and the staff is friendly. It s not located on a busy street, so no traffic noise. The only noise on the beach is the sound of crashing waves.

Full disclosure, there are no frills. Bring your own beach towel shampoo, and there s just plain coffee available in the lobby. The beds could be more comfortable, but that just motivated me to get up in the morning and go enjoy the beach – where I could take a nap! These are not complaints. The great rate is totally worth giving up a few little perks you might get at other lodging options. The rate at the hotel NEXT DOOR with the same beach assets is THREE TIMES the rate of this motel. I would love to visit again.

Beach side of motel. Most or all guest rooms do not face the beach, but all of them are extremely close to the beach.

I thoroughly enjoyed waking up from a nap on this beach to nothing but the sound of crashing waves.

Clean bathroom. No frills, just two bars of soap, but at $100 beach motel, I m not complaining. (No bathroom fan)

Altro
