Online bachelor’s degrees in general studies can vary widely depending on the school, but students can typically tailor programs to their interests and goals. Some programs offer distance learners the option to focus their studies in multiple areas, such as business, education, sociology or English, among others.

Schools usually require students in these programs to complete general education coursework, two to three minors and then fulfill the rest of the degree requirements with electives. Bachelor’s degrees take around four years to earn, but some programs will award an associate’s degree in general studies after two years of study.

Graduate Medical Education (GME): National Institutes of Health Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship

This fellowship program is designed for candidates who have academic and clinical career goals in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Fellows gain hospice and palliative medicine expertise as they provide consultations for medical, psychological, and spiritual concerns and coordinate team-based, holistic integrative approaches. Palliative care services are provided to adults and children through multiple settings, including inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and day-hospital clinics. Trainees encounter patients with common and rare diseases from all walks of life, and in both research and community settings. Candidates must have:

  • a MD or DO degree from an ACGME-accredited medical school
  • satisfactorily completed three postgraduate years of training at the time of appointment
  • ABMS board eligibility or certification in one of the following specialties: internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, oncology, anesthesiology, surgery, or radiation oncology
  • unrestricted state medical licenses and the ability to be licensed in Washington DC and Maryland by the beginning of training.

Program Structure
This one year fellowship program offers training that leads to board eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Fellows receive broad, practical experience in palliative medicine and hospice care through inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine rotations at the NIH Clinical Center (approximately half the academic year), inpatient palliative medicine rotations at community Suburban Hospital (12 weeks), and home hospice (4 weeks), inpatient hospice (6 weeks), and long-term-care hospice (4 weeks) rotations at Washington Home and Community hospices. The fellowship includes a four-week elective rotation.
Additional program highlights:

  • Fellows are expected to demonstrate academic proficiency through literature review, a peer-review quality journal article, a book chapter, or other professional writing project, or a limited and closely-mentored research project
  • Fellows are exposed to and learn about complementary therapies such as acupuncture, relaxation therapy, hypnosis, biofeedback, guided imagery, Reiki, and art therapy
  • Longitudinal self-care activities through confidential, individual meetings with social worker and chaplain
  • Longitudinal educational and clinical collaboration with NIMH Psychiatry Consult Liaison Service

Application Information
This program participates in the ERAS system and all applications to this fellowship should be completed through ERAS. The completed application must include three letters of recommendation. The program also participates in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). What Is So Important About Early Childhood Education?

Many people have reservations about the importance of pre-kindergarten education. This was clearly manifest in 2006 when the California legislature unsuccessfully attempted to pass a law that would make pre-school education mandatory for all children. Many Californians did not agree with the importance of using tax payer funds to fund mandatory pre-school programs, including parents desiring to educate their children themselves.

Research has show that children enrolled in Head Start programs benefit by receiving formal education before kindergarten. According to some studies, children enrolled in these programs are more behaved and have higher IQ scores upon enrolling kindergarten than their peers without formal education. Likewise, it was shown that children enrolled in Head Start programs learned quicker than children not enrolled in these programs.

Critics of pre-kindergarten education claim the differences between children enrolled in pre-school programs and children not receiving formal education are only discernible during kindergarten, first, and second grade. During subsequent years, children who’ve not received formal education prior to kindergarten test at the same level and behave like their peers with pre-kindergarten formal education. Therefore, Head Start children may be at an advantage for a couple of years, but after that, their classmates perform at similar levels. Another major problem with Head Start programs is that children qualifying for these programs usually come from families living below poverty-line, so these programs are not readily available for children from all backgrounds. However, children can receive formal education in other ways other than Head Start programs, including daycare and parents teaching their young children. Even though children in daycare programs can develop intellectually, children benefit most when parents stay at home with their children and educate them.

Most childhood education specialists claim that young children learn best when they’re not pushed too hard, they have an opportunity to interact with their peers, and their parents and instructors treat them kindly. Likewise, children learn best when instruction and educational activities are only a small portion of their days. This is especially true of children enrolled in pre-school programs since it’s not good for young children to be separated from their parents for extended periods of time. Children usually do not benefit in programs with inexperienced teachers and large classroom sizes.

Children taught at an early age usually benefit in the following ways: improved social skills, less or no need for special education instruction during subsequent school years, better grades, and enhanced attention spans. Likewise, some researchers have concluded that young children enrolled in pre-school programs usually graduate from high school, attend college, have fewer behavioral problems, and do not become involved with crime in their adolescent and young adult years.

The research detailing these benefits was completed during the 80’s. In addition to benefiting children experiencing normal development, it was also shown that children with learning or other physical disabilities benefit immensely from pre-kindergarten education. Also, children with parents highly involved in their pre-kindergarten education do not experience the same positive results from Head Start programs as children coming from homes where it’s not as much an emphasis. Children taught how to speak a second language during their early developmental years are also in a better position to learn English at a young age.

Many people do not feel the government should determine whether children should be required to receive formal pre-kindergarten education. One reason for this is children who are educated by their parents during their early developmental years experience the same benefits as children enrolled in pre-school programs, especially children receiving a lot of attention from parents. Parents deciding to educate their young children themselves should utilize creative ideas and activities when educating them.

No matter the differences in opinion about formal pre-kindergarten education, children benefit from receiving some type of education during their early developmental years. However, there is not one-size fits all instruction best suited for all children. While some children benefit immensely from pre-school, it may not be the best educational setting for other children. In most cases, children benefit most by receiving educational instruction from their parents. Parents must evaluate a child’s unique personality before determining which program is best suited for a child since not all programs benefit children the same way.

Teacher Leader: Our program allows you to continue teaching in the classroom while you pursue additional roles, such as a lead teacher, mentor teacher, or department head. In your course work you will explore topics that include learning theory, teacher leadership, teacher inquiry, and curriculum design.

School Leader: Approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the School Leader emphasis meets Pennsylvania State educational requirements for certification as a school principal. This option offers an internship allowing you the opportunity to integrate the specialized knowledge learned through coursework into the field under the supervision of an approved on-site mentor principal. The internship must span a full calendar year. At this time, only Pennsylvania-certified educators are eligible to apply for the Graduate Certificate for Principalship and/or the School Leader emphasis of Masters in Educational Leadership. Our Masters in Educational Leadership with the Teacher Leader emphasis is open to educators from other states and countries. Please note that switching from one emphasis area to another is not permissible once the student has been accepted into a specific program emphasis.

School Leader (without Principal Certification): Same program (courses) as above without principal certification. The internship (which is the capstone assignment for the degree) is modified accordingly. This emphasis area is best aligned to students in international and private schools, domestic and abroad.

  • LPN Licensed Practical Nursing
    This campus-based program prepares students to receive their practical nursing diploma to be certified to the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) who will determine the student’s eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX -PN) to become a licensed practical nurse. There are 3 types of RN programs, each resulting in a different degree awarded upon completion. Upon completion, you ll see plenty of job opportunities where ever you would like to work, especially with the help of a nurse staffing agency. Read our summary of each pathway to becoming a registered nurse to choose which path is right for you.

You can become a registered nurse through an approved diploma / certificate program administered by a hospital or educational institution. These programs typically take 12-18 months to complete and the individual will then meet the prerequisites for taking the NCLEX-RN exam to become a licensed RN.

Associate s Degree (ADN) RN Programs

Another way to become a registered nurse is through the completion of an Associate s degree in nursing program. Most Associate s degree programs take 18-24 months to complete at a local community college. Once the student has earned their ADN they can sign up to take the NCLEX-RN exam. These programs are also fairly quick to complete and relatively cheap since they can be completed at junior colleges. The nice thing about having an Associate s degree is that you can always go back to school to earn your Bachelor s degree at a later time. If you decide to enroll in a Bachelor s degree program you will only need about two years to complete your degree.

Bachelor s Degree (BSN) RN Programs

The best career choice for a future registered nurse is to enroll in a four year Bachelor s degree in nursing program. Although this degree will take about four years to complete, the future graduate will possess a valuable degree that can be used in several different ways. A student who graduates from a BSN program can take the NCLEX-RN test and become a licensed registered nurse. An RN who holds a Bachelor s degree will be preferred by employers over RNs with a lesser degree or no degree at all. An RN with a BSN degree can also apply for nursing management positions and advance quickly within the nursing profession into more specialized fields. Lastly, a BSN degree allows the individual to pursue other careers outside of nursing. A four year degree from a reputable university has value in the US economy and is a signal of academic achievement and general competence. Holding a bachelor s degree in nursing also puts you one step closer to achieving a Master s degree with about 18 months of additional schooling.

The regulations, which first became effective June 30, 2013, were subsequently revised and were adopted on a permanent basis effective on May 14, 2014.

    Field Advisory – The P-12: Office of Special Education has developed resources to assist parents of children with disabilities to have a better understanding of the Common Core Learning Standards and how the child’s individualized education program (IEP) should include recommendations to support their child’s progress towards those standards. Translations of these resources are now available in Spanish, Korean, Russian, Chinese, and Haitian Creole.

    Field Advisory – A memorandum on the Common Core Learning Standards and students with disabilities is now available. This memorandum provides guidance and information on the roles and responsibilities of the Committee on Special Education to align the development and implementation of each student’s individualized education programs to the State’s learning standards; the importance of purposeful planning to address students’ needs; and information for parents of students with disabilities.

    District Data – The 2012-13 Special Education School District Data Profile for each New York State public school district is now available.

    Policy Field Advisory – A new joint memorandum from the Office of Special Education and STAC/Medicaid Unit with additional information regarding State reimbursement for students with disabilities in approved private schools is now available.

    Amendment to Education Law – Section 4402 of New York State Education Law has been amended by Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2014 to repeal the requirement that the district obtain parental consent prior to the initial provision of special education services to a student with a disability in a 12-month special service and/or program.

    Forms and Notices – The New York State Procedural Safeguards Notice: Rights for Parents of Children with Disabilities, Ages 3-21 has been revised to reflect the recent amendment to section 4402 of New York State Education Law by Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2014, relating to parental consent for initial provision of extended school year services.

    Policy Memorandum – A memorandum providing additional guidance and protocols related to the health and safety of students with disabilities with elopement behaviors is now available.

    Applications – A memorandum providing updated procedures, forms and policy relating to a school district’s responsibility to submit timely and complete applications, as prescribed in section 200.6(j) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, for approval of State reimbursement of tuition costs for placements of students with disabilities in out-of-State approved residential programs is now available.

    Professional Development – The New York State Education Department, P-12: Office of Special Education and the Career and Technical Education Office are pleased to announce regional conferences on the New York State Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential.

    Forms and Notices – The Sample Due Process Complaint Notice has been revised to request information from parents who request an impartial hearing as to whether they have another impartial hearing pending or, within the prior year, had requested an impartial hearing and subsequently withdrew their request.

    Binding of Master’s Theses and Projects

    Grading Scheme for Bachelor of Education and Master of Education programs

    The School of Education adopted a grading scheme different than the UNBC standardized grading system for each of the degree programs as represented in the Undergraduate and Graduate Calendars. The Bachelor of Education grading scheme has been used in the Bachelor of Education program since 2007. The Master of Education grading scheme was adopted effective immediately at the September 1st, 2015 Annual General Meeting. Any questions should be direct to the School of Education Chair, Dr. Andrew Kitchenham .

    There are a number of research opportunities for School of Education faculty through the UNBC Research Office and through outside agencies. As well, through the School of Education, each tenured, tenure-track, and term instructor is eligible for a small stipend for presenting at or attending a conference once a year. For research involving human subjects, the Research Ethics Board requires a detailed application and meets once a month for most of the academic year.

    BCTF Maxwell Cameron Award

    Each year, the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation honours the memory of Maxwell A. Cameron with the presentation of a silver lapel pin and monetary award to selected education students who have completed their final year of education and training at one of BC’s public universities.

    At UNBC, the outstanding Teacher Candidates in both the Elementary Years and Secondary Years stream are selected through a process of nomination by their Cooperating Teachers, Practicum Supervisors, and/or the School of Education faculty and the evaluation of their academic and professional preparation, practicum work, and their commitment to social justice issues.

    Special Education Specialization (next start date: September 2018)

    The Special Education specialization prepares students to provide professional services and leadership in Special Education and educational programs offered in schools and other educational institutions. The part-time program includes an integrated core of required courses, elective courses, and thesis, project portfolio, or comprehensive examination routes.

    This Special Education specialization is delivered online in its entirety but students should understand that it is synchronous (in front of a computer with a headset on a certain day at a specific time). It requires a minimum of 31 graduate credit hours for completion, with an option to take up to 10 additional elective credit hours within the degree route. The Special Education specialization requires students to complete five (5) required courses, and a sufficient number of elective courses to meet the minimum 31 credit hour graduation requirement including the comprehensive examination (3 credit hours), portfolio (3 credits), project (6 credit hours), or thesis (9 credit hours) routes. The normal completion rate for full-time students is between two and four years and between three and six years for part-time students.

    Albright’s ADP curriculum features an accelerated seminar format with intense use of the Internet as well as additional computer technology. Interaction between students is emphasized and much of this collaboration involves applied group activities.

    While traditional classes meet 40-44 hours per semester, Albright’s ADP courses meet for four hours per evening for five to seven weeks. Remaining class time is fulfilled by a combination of Internet usage and independent study.

    Through a special partnership with Reading Area Community College, Delaware County Community College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Montgomery County Community College, Northampton Community College, and Warren County Community College, most associate degrees (A.A. or A.S.) from these colleges transfer fully to Albright ADP (and acceptance is automatic if all Albright transfer admissions criteria are met.) Albright College offers a $2,500-3,200 Partner Scholarship based on GPA to graduates of these colleges. (Any applicant with an Associates Degree is eligible for a $2,500 scholarship.)

    ADP offers bachelor’s degrees in:

    Transfer Post-9/11 GI Bill to Spouse and Dependents

    The transferability option under the Post-9/11 GI Bill allows Servicemembers to transfer all or some unused benefits to their spouse or dependent children. The request to transfer unused GI Bill benefits to eligible dependents must be completed while servicing as an active member of the Armed Forces. The Department of Defense (DoD) determines whether or not you can transfer benefits to your family. Once the DoD approves benefits for transfer, the new beneficiaries apply for them at VA.     Type of Assistance

    Eligible Servicemembers may transfer all 36 months or the portion of unused Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits (unless DoD or the Department of Homeland Security has limited the number of transferable months). If you’re eligible, you may transfer benefits to the following individuals:

    Admission Requirements

    Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

    Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

    • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
    • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
    • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.

    Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

    Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate.     International Students

    Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

    • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
    • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language.     Top Chef Dreams: Are Cooking Schools a Rip-Off?

    The idea of becoming a gourmet chef and maybe even owning your own restaurant someday is one of those enduring fantasies that percolate through each generation. And today, with the popularity of starmaking competition shows like Bravo’s Top Chef and Food Network’s Iron Chef. the concept of cooking your way to a new career is even more alluring. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the bottom lines of for-profit education companies in the business of selling those chef’s-hat dreams are soaring.

    As the economy continues to limp along, the drive to get a leg up in competitive fields like gourmet cooking is only increasing. Overall enrollment at for-profit trade schools, which include culinary schools, has expanded by about 20% a year for the past two years, according to the Association of Private Sector Colleges Universities, a group that represents for-profit schools nationwide. For example, one company, the Career Education Corp. which operates 17 culinary schools in the U.S. has seen enrollment increase by more than 46% since 2008, according to company spokesman Mark Spencer. (See “The 20 Best- and Worst-Paid College Majors.”)

    And the students flocking to attend culinary schools are paying a pretty penny. According to data recently released by the Department of Education, tuition at a culinary school can run upwards of $30,000. For example, the Orlando branch of Le Cordon Bleu (LCB) charges $35,130 for its 21-month associate’s degree in culinary arts. Thanks in part to that hefty price tag, LCB’s parent company, the Career Education Corp. has seen its profits balloon. Last year the company reported revenue of $1.84 billion, a 63% increase from 2007.

    But the numbers aren’t as good for students at culinary schools. Many enroll sold on the idea of being a chef but wake up to the harsh reality of low-paying line-cook jobs and mountains of debt on graduation. About 800 current and former students are involved in a class action in California that alleges that the LCB branch in Pasadena, formerly called the California School of Culinary Arts, “falsely led students to believe they would be able to obtain employment as chefs after graduation and make a chef’s salary, thereby enabling them to pay off their loans within a reasonable period of time,” according to Michael Louis Kelly, an attorney representing the students.

    One of those students, Daniel Vasquez, says he has had difficulty finding work other than as a line cook a lower-paying job that he likely could have gotten without footing the bill for culinary school. Vasquez became interested in the culinary institute after seeing a commercial on TV that he says led him to believe that if he went to the school he would become a chef. When he enrolled in 2005, he says, he was told by an admissions officer that on graduation it would be “easy” for him to obtain a job as a sous chef (an apprentice chef) for which he could expect to start at $18 an hour. Vasquez was so convinced that he took out $65,018 in loans to cover the tuition for the 18-month program ($45,148), as well as associated fees, supplies, his uniform and living expenses.

    In the years since graduation, Vasquez, for the most part, has been unable to find culinary jobs that pay more than $10 to $12 an hour and as a result has been unable to make payments on his loans. And although the school changed its recruitment materials nationwide in July 2009 to make it clear students cannot expect to be chefs on graduation it now lists more realistic postgraduation career opportunities that’s cold comfort to Vasquez, who is now nearly $80,000 in debt. “I’m not sure I will ever be able to pay it off,” Vasquez told TIME. “I never would have borrowed the money if I knew I wouldn’t be able to repay it. I went to this school so I could be ahead, jump-start my future, but now, who knows.” (Read about the cult of the celebrity chef.)

    That’s the problem, says Eric Greenspan, rising Food Network star and head chef and owner of the Foundry on Melrose, a high-end restaurant in Los Angeles. He thinks students enroll in the programs hoping to skip to the head of the pack, only to find out that they still have to start at the bottom. In entry-level cooking jobs like that of a line cook or work with a caterer, a typical starting wage is $9 to $10 an hour, Greenspan says. “These kids are paying law-school prices, and culinary schools are training them for minimum-wage jobs.” He says students would be better off getting their foot in the door with a chef they admire and working very hard to climb their way to the top. “How do rock stars become famous? They work hard. They don’t go to guitar schools,” he says.

    That argument taps into the perennial debate over the usefulness of higher education: Are creative careers like cooking, fashion design and even journalism best learned by going to school or by getting your foot in the door and training on the job? One of the largest benefits of going to school is making connections to people in the field. That was true for Jim Hanson, who graduated from LCB’s Minneapolis branch nine months ago. He says the $34,000 or so he paid for his associate’s degree in baking and pastry arts was worth the cost even though he had to take out student loans in large part because the school connected him to his current employer. As a student worker at the school while he attended classes, Hanson was introduced to the owner of Chez Arnaud, a French bakery in Minneapolis, where he now works as head baker (and recently won a local award for “Best Baguette”). “It was all worth it,” he told TIME. “Without Le Cordon Bleu , I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near this job.” Hanson, who estimates that he will be able to pay off his student loans in five to 10 years, says the cost of the program was intimidating at first since he would “be paying for this for a while,” but ultimately he decided it was a financial risk he was willing to take. “This was an investment I wanted to make for myself,” he says.

    And it’s true that the onus is on the students to make sure their aspirations are realistic in relation to their budgets and their local job market. “Students are always making an informed decision and should fully understand what is involved,” says Brian Moran, the interim president of the Association of Private Sector Colleges Universities. “If they are taking loans, they need to understand their responsibilities the total picture.” And, of course, no degree can guarantee a job. “The education our students receive from experienced chef instructors puts them on a career path,” says spokesman Mark Spencer. “But as with all education, it’s no guarantee of success.”

    But as Greenspan notes, culinary schools do a very good job of tapping into the psyches of wannabe chefs. “Culinary schools sell people on their love of cooking,” he says. “They’re selling the dream.” Indeed, a recent advertisement on Google for the Arizona Culinary Institute, a private, for-profit school that charges $25,990 for its nine-month program, read, “Ready to follow your dream?” But if the number of competitors on Top Chef and The Next Iron Chef has proved anything, it’s that while there are a lot of people who want to be chefs, far fewer see those dreams come true.

    Earning a degree in this field begins with taking the right coursework in high school.   • Be familiar with the relevant guidelines and standards in your professions’ Codes of Ethics with regards to termination and abandonment issues. Summary of the different Codes of Ethics on Termination Psychotherapy and Counseling
  • Some terminations are short and swift, while others may be long and protracted. Then termination can have different meanings and be just an end of a phase in intermittent-long-term therapy. The form and type of termination depends on the client, setting of therapy, therapeutic orientation, quality and type of therapist-client relationship and the therapist.
  • If necessary, review with patients their insurance coverage, limits to managed care contracts, and how utilization review may impact on termination. Set up arrangements for addressing patient treatment needs if continued authorization is denied.
  • Make adequate arrangements for coverage during any periods of planned or unplanned absences.
  • Provide patients with referrals to other treatment sources, if needed, and work to assist them in their transition to other health care providers.
  • Be cautious in regard to termination of patients who are in crisis. Try to avoid terminating clients who are in acute or temporary crisis due to payment issues.
  • The average number of visits among U.S. patients receiving psychotherapy in 2007 was 8 sessions, according to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
  • 41 percent of patients in the U.S. quit psychotherapy “prematurely,” according to a 2010 study in the journal Psychotherapy Theory, Research, Practice, Training.
  • Many clients unilaterally decide to drop out of therapy. They may do that with a phone message or by simply not showing up to their next scheduled appointment. You must remember that it is the client’s prerogative and choice whether to continue in therapy or not. Except in extreme situations, such as when the client poses a danger to self or others, you need to respect their choice. Do not tacitly condone patients dropping out of treatment when your clinical judgment indicates continued care is needed. When clinically and otherwise appropriate, notify the patient of your assessment and recommendations. There is no ethical, clinical or legal mandate to send a registered letter to client. Different clients and situations may require different actions and, at times, lack of action.
  • The question of whether therapists need to send a letter to clients who unilaterally dropped out (i.e. pre-mature termination) was recently addressed by Davis & Younggren in a 2009 PPRP article, where they clearly stated “In ordinary circumstances, however, letters are typically unnecessary and potentially counterproductive to the natural dissolution of the relationship (Davis, 2008). For instance, the client might feel embarrassed or scolded for his or her oblique termination and be less inclined to return. The client might perceive the psychotherapist’s actions as controlling and unnecessarily intrusive. It might seem that the psychotherapist is trying to break up with the client or get rid of him or her with such a formal action. Routine letters of closure not only present an unrealistic administrative burden on the provider, they add to the risk of negative client reactions.” (p. 575)
  • It is not unusual for therapy to break down rather than go through a smooth, clear or distinct termination process with patients with personality disorders (i.e. BPD) or those who were diagnosed with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or Bi-Polar disorders. Termination with these clients can be very abrupt or very long, painful, confusing and tumultuous. Obviously, each case should be handled according to the specific context of therapy. The context of therapy includes client, setting, therapy and therapist factors.
  • You can terminate treatment with clients (or another person with whom the client has a relationship) who threaten or stalk you, your family member or your employees via phone, email, online, in-person or other means. You can also terminate treatment with clients who intrude into your private life via the Internet or in “real” life. You are allowed to protect your privacy and secure your own, your family members’ and employee’s sense of privacy and safety. (Document, document and document.)
  • You must terminate therapy when it becomes reasonably clear that the patient no longer needs the service, is not likely to benefit, or is being harmed by continued service. For those patients who have ongoing treatment needs, when appropriate, one should offer to provide them with assistance with referrals to other appropriately trained and accessible professionals (except when we are being threatened, assaulted, stalked, or other relevant situations).
  • Document discussions of termination issues, agreements reached, decisions made and their rationale, and, when relevant, document the recommendations and follow-ups. Purchase a Termination Summary form
  • Termination of treatment is not always a permanent ending of the professional relationship. Termination is often not relevant during, or an end of phase in, intermittent-long-term psychotherapy. These forms of therapy may continue throughout the life span of individuals and families.
  • Termination is a phase of each patient’s treatment. If possible and appropriate, plan for it, prepare for it, process it. Additionally, each clinician should consider termination in light of their theoretical orientation and treatment approach, each patient’s/client’s diagnosis and treatment needs, and any relevant diversity factors that might impact the process.

    2. Record the student’s reading behavior using the passage’s Running Record form.
    3. If a student scores 90 percent, assess the student’s comprehension using a Quick Check from Level A-Z and Retelling Rubrics .

    On Thursday evening, June 9, Dr. Demento will give a talk at Reed College in Portland, OR. The topic is “Entertainment, Education, Indoctrination! 100 Years of American Children’s Records.” Note that this is a lecture and not a Dr. Demento Show; he will not be wearing his top hat and tails. However, it includes a lot of great kids’ songs that will be familiar to Dr. Demento listeners. The lecture will be in Vollum Lecture Hall, on Eliot Circle near the center of the campus. Business, recreation, and yes even education, have been deeply impacted by things like the internet, cell phones, and computers. Everything is able to be streamlined, and anything you could ever want to know can be found with a couple clicks of a button. How does this truly effect us? This is a question that students, lawmakers, parents, and teachers have been arguing over for the past decade. Is the use of technology in the classroom truly hurting the youth of the world or is it preparing them for a technologically demanding future?

    Advantages of Technology in Education

    1. A More Interactive Experience
    Utilizing technology give the teachers and students an ability to really get into the subject that they are learning about. You can use games, videos, and simulations to help ensure that students are not only excited about what they are doing, but comprehending it as well.

    2. An Unlimited Source of Resources
    The answer to any question that a person has can be found in the click of a button using computers, smart phones, tablets, and the internet. This is a priceless benefit for technology because students can expand their own understanding, and seek answers or information on subjects very easily.

    3. Necessary Skills for the Future
    Business is dominated by technology, as well as just about all of the workforce. If we do not implement technology and it’s use in our classrooms then we will have a generation of students who are not prepared with the necessary skills they need to be employed.

    4. Saves Precious Resources
    One often overlooked benefit of using technology in the classroom is the amount of resources that would be saved. Books, assignments, and many other things require materials like paper to do. If things became digitized then the sheer amount of these resources would be drastically cut down.

    5. Instantly Updated Information
    The things that we know are always changing, and when this happens, educational resources like textbooks must be updated as well. This is possible with technology, and it has the ability to happen exponentially faster and cheaper than if all new books and resources has to be purchased.

    6. No More Heavy Backpacks
    The further into your education that you get, the more things you are required bring with you each day. The backpacks of high school students are loaded down with the weight of textbooks, this would no longer be a problem if all learning resources for their education would through technology.

    Disadvantages of Technology in Education

    1. What a Distraction
    By far, the biggest problem with using technology in education is how distracting it can be. While many great educational things can be accessed, things that are not useful and waste time can be as well. Games, video, and music all distract students from what they are supposed to be doing with their technology.

    2. Inappropriate Access
    The wealth of great information on the internet is easily over shadowed by the amount of bad things present as well. Violence, pornographic materials, and hateful things can all be accessed by students, and if this is done on school time, premises, or technology big problems can arise.

    3. Not Everything on the Internet is True
    Anyone can post anything on the internet, but this doesn’t mean that it is true or correct. This is a problem when it comes to education because if students are seeking answers to a question, they could easily come across the incorrect answer and not realize it.

    4. Easier Cheating
    Another one of the big problems that are argued when it comes to technology in education is just how easy it has become for students to cheat. They are able to simply search an answer to a question and instantly find the answer.

    5. Extremely Expensive To Keep Up To Date
    It is not secret that the newest and most up to date technology is very expensive. In order for a school to use technology like this they have to pay for it, which is difficult for most public schools to do because of the sheer cost. This is also difficult for parents because the students become accustomed to some technology that they do not have at home.

    6. Hinders Basic Skills
    Technology automates just about everything. Instead of learning and understanding basic math, students can simply use their calculator on their phones. Spelling is another example of this, we need to make sure that students retain the ability to problem solve and think for themselves.

    How Do I Enter the Alternate Route Program?

    The Alternate Route program is a non-traditional teacher preparation program designed for those individuals who HAVE NOT completed a formal teacher preparation program at an accredited college or university, but wish to obtain the necessary training to become a NJ certified teacher.

    Completing the Alternate Route program requires that the following series of steps be taken by a prospective applicant in the order listed:

    1. Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) through the Office of Licensure and Academic Credentials (OLC).

    **New requirement for Certificate of Eligibility: As of October 31, 2009, applicants for a Certificate of Eligibility for elementary, middle school specialization, N-12 subject area and career and technical education CEs must complete 24 hours of formal instruction prior to issuance of the CE. This requirement also serves as an introduction to the teaching profession for those individuals who are exploring career options. This requirement became effective on September 1, 2009, for candidates seeking a pre-school through grade three CE.

    Remember, it is your responsibility to make sure all necessary documents are received by the OLC so that your file can be reviewed by an examiner. The waiting time for your application review does not begin until all documentation is received.     1. Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility and accept employment.

    A Certificate of Eligibility is issued once a candidate meets all the requirements for the particular endorsement. The Certificate of Eligibility authorizes an individual to seek and accept employment in a New Jersey public school requiring certification. Once all requirements for a certificate have been met, it will be issued by the OLC and mailed to your home address.

  • Enter the Provisional Teacher Program.

    Once you have secured employment, it is the responsibility of the hiring school district to enroll all Novice Teachers in the Provisional Teacher Program. A Provisional teaching certificate is then issued for a period of two years. The PTP is a school-based training and evaluation program provided during the first year of teaching in New Jersey.   • Meet mentoring and formal instruction requirements .
  • While working as a provisional alternate route teacher you must be mentored by a colleague in the district and be supervised and evaluated by district personnel.
    Concurrently, you must attend formal instruction that is required for the certificate you are seeking. The formal instruction requirements are:

    • Elementary CE. A minimum of 200 hours of formal instruction at a state approved regional training center or alternate route Master of Arts in Teaching Program. Elementary K-5 alternate route candidates hired on or after October 31, 2009, must complete 45 hours of study in teaching language arts/literacy and 45 hours of study in teaching mathematics.
    • Elementary School with Middle School Specialization CE. In addition to completing requirements for the K-5 standard certificate, middle school specialization candidates must complete a course in adolescent psychology.
    • Subject Area CE. A minimum of 200 clock hours of formal instruction at a state approved regional training center or alternate route Master of Arts in Teaching Program. For World Language candidates, a course in methodology must also be completed.
    • Preschool through Grade 3 CE. An approved New Jersey college-university program of 13-17 credits.
    • Teacher of Students with Disabilities CE. An approved New Jersey college/university program of 21-27 credits (and the requirements for the candidate s subject area or grade level certificate).
    • Bilingual/bicultural CE. An approved New Jersey college/university program of 12 credits (and the requirements for the candidate s subject area or grade level certificate).
    • ESL CE: 200 hours of formal instruction at a state approved regional training center and a college/university program of 15-21 credits.

    Classes and Assignments of Public Health Majors

    The types of courses you take as a public health major will vary depending on the school you attend and the degree level you select.
