Palliative Care (pronounced pal-lee-uh-tiv) is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.

Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work together with a patient s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

  1. Where do I receive palliative care?
    Palliative care is provided in a variety of settings including the hospital, outpatient clinics, home, hospice and long term care facilities.
  2. Does my insurance pay for palliative care?
    Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover palliative care. If costs concern you, a social worker or financial consultant from the palliative care team can help you.
  3. How do I get palliative care?
    Ask for it! Tell your doctors, nurses, family and caregivers that you want palliative care.
  4. How do I know if palliative care is right for me?
    Palliative care may be right for you if you suffer from pain, stress or other symptoms due to a serious illness. Serious illnesses may include cancer, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s, HIV/AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis and more. Palliative care can be provided at any stage of illness and along with treatment meant to cure you.
  5. What can I expect from palliative care?
    The palliative care team works in partnership with your own doctor to provide an extra layer of support for you and your family. The team provides expert symptom management, extra time for communication and help navigating the health system.
  6. Who provides palliative care?

Job Description

A hospice care aide helps individuals unable of helping themselves. These aides travel to the patient s home and help them perform activities required for daily life. Hospice care aides are often associated with the elderly or disabled who are unable to take care of themselves, so they perform all required functions specific to the patient.

Most of the time, a hospice aide is the first position an individual may take at the beginning of their career. Alternatively, an individual may seek such a career if they are interested in the nursing field, but do not have the required education or training. Most functions performed are rather fundamental in nature, and do not require much training.

Hospice aides usually work within a hospice environment or travel to the patient s home. They help the individual eat, get up out of bed, or help them with the bathroom or a bedpan. The number of duties involved depends on the nature and the status of the patient, since they are expected to help the patient function as normally as possible. If working within a hospice environment, they work with individual patients to make their final days as comfortable as possible. If working in a home environment, they spend time sitting with or caring for an elderly or disabled patient who requires extra care.

Many times, families of patients in either a home or hospice environment can t commit to 24 hour care, so they hire a hospice aide to help during the times they are absent. Hospice aides travel to the home and work in shifts providing round the clock supervision and care. They aren t usually a registered nurse or hold a license and cannot usually administer medication, so the responsibilities are typically fundamental.

Training/Educational Requirements

There is no educational or training requirement for this position. A hospice aide learns from on-the-job training with a registered nurse or a nurse s aide. They learn the proper way to do things such as help a patient out of bed or assist with a bedpan by observing other nurses and by practicing. Oftentimes the family of the patient has a particular way they want things done, so the best training comes from working directly on the job.

The National Association for Home Care and Hospice ( NAHC ) offers certification for personal and home care aides throughout the country. This certification is not mandatory although individuals may opt to gain it to demonstrate they have met established industry standards. It can be a simple certification and lend way to further development within this role. Those individuals wishing to gain their certification must complete a 75-hour course, observe and document work in up to 17 different skills signed off by a registered nurse. In addition, they must successfully pass a final exam. Although this isn t a requirement, it can certainly lend way to more opportunities for advancement.

There are some high school courses that prepare for this role. At the early stages, an individual can do a co-op job to better prepare themselves for becoming a hospice aide. There are some standalone classes an individual can take in patient care which prepares them for the real thing. Individuals interested in a career as a hospice aide receive basic training from the company they work for before they are sent to a patient s home.

When working in a hospice environment, the facility will provide some training not only in how to care for a patient but also in how to make them comfortable as they prepare for death. There are certain personality traits such as patience and compassion that are required for such a role since most patients are elderly, disabled, or dying.

How to Get Hired

Most individuals wishing to get a job as a hospice aide look for employment with a home health care services company. This is usually the best way to get hired because the patients and their families go to such a company to hire this type of individual. It helps to take training classes or work through a high school co-op to prepare for this role. In turn, this also helps to get hired much faster.

For the hospice aide wishing to get hired into a hospice environment, it helps to apply to the facility directly. Usually these facilities are looking for background and experience since patients who come in here require a certain type of personality. It is also helpful to have experience working with a dying patient.

Although there is no specific educational requirement for this position, experience helps to get hired. It is especially true for families who are hiring someone to come to their home and care for their loved one.

Job Prospects, Employment Outlook, and Career Development

There is expected to be a better than average increase in the hiring of hospice aides. This role is expected to grow as families continue to look for individuals to care for their loved ones in a home or hospice environment. Since this is an entry-level position, the requirements for hiring are much lower. Therefore, it appeals to those who may not have a college education. There is a high potential for growth since people oftentimes don t want to work within an entry-level role.

As more hospice centers become a popular environment, the need for hospice aides will increase. So, too, will the need to keep aging or disabled family members in their home rather than sending them to a nursing home. This means there will be an increased need for individuals in this role, and within the home health care services business.

Working Environment

Depending on the type of facility a hospice aide wishes to work within, the environment may be slightly different. If focused within home health care, the individual will often travel to patient s homes. The assignment may last for a short time or may become a regular job. Individuals in this role care for more than one patient in their home or sometimes travel between a variety of different patient s homes. It all depends on the patients, the workload and the hours required. However, if focused within the home health care niche, hospice aides can expect the working environment to be an actual home. If focused within the hospice niche, it is expected to work within such a facility or institution. These facilities strive to create a cozy environment for their patients so they can be comfortable before they die. This work environment is more like an actual medical facility, but feels cozier.

Salary and Benefits

As of 2006, the average earnings for a hospice aide was about $9.34 an hour. The range averaged anywhere from $7.99 all the way up to $13 per hour depending on the facility. In some instances, a home health care company pays slightly higher depending on the environment and patient s needs. The more experience an individual has, the more they can expect to earn per hour.

Since these are hourly positions, most of the time hospice aides work without any true benefits. Any travel expenses incurred are the individuals responsibility and are often not reimbursed. Instead, a flat hourly rate is given to hospice aides. For those working within a hospice environment, they can expect some benefits if they are hired by the facility directly.

    The University of Connecticut is home to the Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education, and Talent Development. Studies focusing on meeting the needs of gifted and talented youth have received national and international attention for over 40 years. The earliest research emphasized studies related to creativity, assessment, identification, programming, and evaluation. Several studies conducted by our research team are considered seminal research that guides the design and development of programs and services to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. The research team includes Dr. Joseph S. Renzulli, Dr. Sally M. Reis, Dr. Del Siegle, Dr. E. Jean Gubbins, Dr. Catherine Little, and Dr. D. Betsy McCoach. The team poses questions such as the following that are theory-based and practice relevant.

    • Who are the gifted and talented students?
    • How do you screen and identify potentially gifted and talented students?
    • What are examples of defensible programs and services?
    • How can gifted education programs and practices enrich students’ learning opportunities?
    • What are the most effective approaches to reading and mathematics instruction for gifted and potentially gifted youngsters?
    • How can parents and educators effectively collaborate in support of gifted students?

    Historical leadership in advocating a broadened conception of giftedness, and a focus on the development of potentials in groups not ordinarily included in special programs for the gifted and talented are hallmarks of the Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education, and Talent Development. These hallmarks affect all programs and services, including campus-based graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts degree, Sixth Year Certificate, and Doctor of Philosophy degree, as well as online programs designed for students throughout the world resulting in Master’s degrees and Sixth Year Certificates. Graduates hold key leadership and research roles throughout the nation and the world.

    Research and teaching are further enhanced by grant-based initiatives. The only federally funded research organization, known as The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT), has existed since 1990 with various university partnerships. As of 2006, the University of Connecticut partnership is with the University of Virginia. The current research studies for the NRC/GT are an integrated approach to identifying, serving, and evaluating academic outcomes. In addition, two federally funded model projects continue their acclaimed work in reading (Schoolwide Enrichment Model-Reading) and mathematics (Project M 3. Mentoring Mathematical Minds).

    The Schoolwide Enrichment Model and its predecessor, The Enrichment Triad Model, have led to the development of an exciting new technology-based learning system. The Renzulli Learning System is an on-line program matching students’ interests and learning styles to enrich and challenge their learning opportunities.

    The Renzulli Center earned recognition for its summer professional learning experiences associated with Confratute (conference institute). As of 2012, Confratute celebrates the 35th anniversary of this dynamic approach to high-end learning experiences for educators and parents. The learning experiences mirror the theoretical and practical approaches advocated for gifted and talented students.

    Rounding out the research and education programs is Mentor Connection, an inquiry-based research program for talented teens. Rising juniors and seniors from across the country are selected to participate in ongoing research projects by faculty and doctoral students. Young people experience all phases of research during their 3-week residential experience. As junior professionals, they summarize their learning through a research symposium at the conclusion of their mentorship experience.

    The Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education and Talent Development comprises many unique teaching, research, and service components, some of which are highlighted above. Details of these components and others are found on the pages listed on the left panel.

    The University of Texas at Arlington s College of Nursing and School of Social Work will use nearly $900,000 during the next three years to fund research to improve connections between nurses and social workers before they meet in the health care workplace.

    The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration recently awarded an $862,532 Advanced Nursing Education Grant to Judy LeFlore, a professor and interim associate dean for research of the UT Arlington College of Nursing . The funding reflects the growing popularity of interprofessional education and the important role social workers and nurses play in treating patients holistically, she said.

    There is a realization from the federal government all the way down to academia that education of health care professionals in silos is not very effective or efficient. We need to shift the task of learning to work together as a team to the education end, rather than the service end, LeFlore said.

    LeFlore will work with School of Social Work professors Gail Adorno and Joan Blakey as well as fellow nursing professors Mindi Anderson, Patricia Thomas and Sharolyn Dihigo and clinical instructors Lindy Moake and Sara Moore.

    Beginning in Fall 2013 and again in Fall 2014, about 40 graduate students, from the School of Social Work and the pediatric and neonatal nurse practitioner program, will be selected for the grant program. They ll work together in small groups for the next year to come up with care plans for selected case studies. Professors will teach the students about each profession s roles and responsibilities, distinct professional values, as well as identifying barriers to teamwork between social workers and nurses in the workplace.

    There aren t many models for how to teach nurses and social workers to work collaboratively. Yet, great working relationships between nurses and social workers translates into patients receiving better, more comprehensive care, Adorno said. This initiative with nursing will allow us to develop a unique model of interprofessional education enhanced by technology in a specific practice setting neonatal and pediatric health care.

    In addition to in-person collaboration, the student teams will use the virtual world of Second Life to meet and work together on projects. They ll also work through simulations with computerized patients in UT Arlington s Smart Hospital . a state-of-the-art clinical lab with 32 high-tech simulation stations. The program also will have a service-learning component, which will include volunteer work at SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a domestic violence shelter with locations in Arlington and Fort Worth.

    LeFlore and the research team hope to use what they learn to design a course on team dynamics for social work and nursing graduate students to take together in the future. They believe the model they establish could be applied to other areas of care, such as the growing field of geriatrics.

    The Master’s of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction is a 30 graduate credit hour program for students with teaching experience who wish to pursue new interests and extended study.

    This program is for:

    • U.S. candidates who already possess an initial license and want to enhance learning further in their area of licensure
    • All candidates who want to explore new areas of interest such as policy, teacher leadership, teaching English Language Learners, universal design for learning, assessment, and special education
    • International students who wish to engage with foundational and leading edge thinking and thinkers on curriculum, pedagogy, and educational reform;
    • Private school educators, Boston College students enrolled in the fifth year program, and educators from areas such as publishing, curriculum design, and museum education
    • Classroom teachers who wish to become educational leaders in their schools and districts.

    This degree program does not lead to licensure, nor are students in this program eligible to apply for supervised practicum experiences.

    Programs of study are planned and personalized in consultation with a faculty advisor to support and develop candidate’s professional goals and progress towards completion. With careful planning and advising, the program can be completed in one academic year and two summers.

    There are two required courses. Candidates select eight additional courses to construct a personalized and flexible pathway of study.

    Faculty: All faculty in the Department work with students in the Curriculum and Instruction master’s program, based on the interest areas of each student.

    In planning their program of studies candidates can complete one of the certificates of specializations offered by the Lynch School or can develop an area of individual focus in consultation with their advisor. Certificates and specializations include:

    OUR MISSION:
    We are committed to training, educating, and certifying emergency and community responders to protect the citizens and visitors of New Hampshire.

    We strive daily to fulfill this mission with professionalism, integrity, and respect.

    As Director, my duty is to oversee the two bureaus that make up the Division – the Bureau of Fire Training and Administration and the Bureau of EMS. as outlined in state law RSA 21-P:12-a and RSA 21-P:12-b respectively. The Division does not use any money from the state’s General Fund, nor does it use citizen tax dollars. Instead, it is funded through a fee charged to insurance companies for motor vehicle records. We also rely on grants being awarded to our Division in order to keep our two facilities in working order.

    Our Concord campus, the Richard M. Flynn Fire Academy. includes an administration/classroom building, 80-bed dormitory, 4-bay fire station (drive through), training ground (2 burn buildings, flashover simulator, and other props), and many mobile props that are used throughout the state. It also serves as the Northeast regional training facility for aircraft rescue and firefighting personnel. In August 2014, our Raymond S. Burton Fire EMS Training Facility opened in Bethlehem to facilitate training in the northern part of NH. The new facility has a burn building with an accompanying water supply cistern, a 50-seat classroom, field office, and an equipment and decontamination bay.

    From ensuring accessible, high quality, and cutting edge training to more than 10,000 municipal, volunteer, and on-call fire and EMS responders statewide as well as licensing EMS providers, ambulance services, and instructors, there is a lot going on! All of us here at the Division are excited about the future of Fire and EMS training and certification in NH.

    1. The Nurse Anesthesia program requires a minimum of two years of current critical care experience (EXCLUDING ORIENTATION). which must be completed within the last three (3) years by the time of application

    The doctoral program in leadership with a specialization in organizational leadership curriculum is both strategically focused and innovative, aligning contemporary leadership theory with today’s best leadership practices.     Through online coursework, applied activities and in-person clinical experiences, the program will equip you with specialized skills and advanced knowledge in early childhood pedagogy, community collaboration, technology, administration, policy analysis and advocacy. The master’s degree is appropriate for students interested in learning about early childhood education research and working with infants and children in grades K-3. This track may be of interest if you already have a teaching certificate and are interested in furthering your knowledge and skills or pursuing doctoral studies in the future.

    All courses are online, but practicum placement are completed in person. If you are seeking certification in a state other than Arizona, you should contact your state department of education to determine the early childhood education requirements prior to applying.

    Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.

    Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree, in any field, from a regionally accredited institution.

    Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00 = “A”) in the last 60 hours of a student’s first bachelor’s degree program, or applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00 = “A”) in an applicable master’s degree program.

    All applicants must submit:

    Additional Application Information

    Program Overview

    This program specifically prepares teachers for the diversity of languages and cultures often encountered in California’s public school classrooms. It prepares candidates to address the needs of students who speak English as a native language and/or as a second language in the elementary school setting. An underlying principle of the program is the belief that all children (regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ability or economic status) are capable of learning and educators can make a difference in their lives. Emphasis is placed on the K-8 student as actively engaged in his/her learning.

    Upon completion of the program, candidates will be eligible for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

    How to Rebuild Your Credit After Bankruptcy — Fast

    It’s about as popular as a root canal or a blown tire on the freeway. Yet like both of those dreaded occurrences, filing for bankruptcy is commonplace in modern America. In 2013 1,107,699 individuals and businesses in the U.S. had to file for bankruptcy according to government data. While it’s pretty safe to say that not many of the folks who filed for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy were eager to do it, it’s worth remembering that bankruptcy is by no means a financial death sentence.

    After all, bankruptcy protection is designed to provide people and companies with a way to discharge at least some of their debts and start over. And one of the very first steps to reboot your financial life involves rebuilding your credit score.

    How Bankruptcy Affects Your Credit Score

    There’s no sugarcoating the fact that any individual who has to file for bankruptcy is going to see a negative impact on their credit score. This matters because lenders rely on credit scores – which typically range from 300 on the low end to a maximum of 850 – to determine whether or not to offer you a mortgage or car loan and, if they do, at what interest rate. Put another way, a credit score is a quick way for lenders to decide how risky it is to loan you money.

    Not surprisingly, a bankruptcy — which, by definition, allows someone to not repay all of their debts — hammers your credit score. How much it hurts depends on where you started. According to the Fair Isaac Corporation, which is better known as FICO and the best-known company that calculates credit scores, someone with a stellar score of 780 would see their rating plummet to between 540 and 560 after declaring bankruptcy. A person with a starting score of around 680 can expect to drop between 150 and 180 points, to between 500 and 530, after a bankruptcy. You can take a look at the credit profiles of the two people used in the FICO example here.

    What does this all mean? In short, bankruptcy is a major red flag to lenders, a fact that is reflected in your credit score. In April of 2014 FICO reported that its median score was 711. Scores of 550 or lower are considered “deep subprime” by lenders and carry with them high interest rates – if you can get a loan at all.

    Rebuilding Your Credit to Improve your Financial Health

    Fortunately, a bankruptcy is by no means game over for your financial life. There are steps you can take to begin rebuilding your credit and, eventually, your overall financial health. “Bankruptcy is a very difficult and emotional time since there are severe consequences, but it also represents a chance to “start over” from a financial sense,” says Bill Harddekopf. CEO at LowCards.com.

    According to Hardekopf, the road back to financial well being starts with rebuilding your credit score. “One of the first things to do is to get a free copy of your credit report, which you are able to do once a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Check this for errors. Make sure you also determine your FICO credit score and work diligently to build up this score each month.”

    Raising your score, says Hardekopf, is all about getting back to basics. “Pay your bills on time. Don’t spend more than you can afford. Get a credit card that reports to the credit reporting agencies and pay off the entire balance each month so you don’t incur any interest charges–this will help slowly build your credit score.”

    Gerri Detweiler, author of Debt Collection Answers. How to Use Debt Collection Laws to Protect Your Rights, counsels that it’s important to avoid the urge to steer clear from credit after a bankruptcy. “Unfortunately, many people avoid credit afterward, which is understandable, but doesn’t help the situation,” she says. Instead, Detweiler says to focus on responsibly repaying any loans — such as a car or student loan — that may have survived bankruptcy. “Continue to pay them on time. You may also want to get a secured credit card. Use it for one purchase a month (your cell phone bill for example) and pay it off right away, and it will provide a valuable credit reference,” she says. “I’ve seen consumers boost their credit scores by 50-75 points or more in one or two years using this approach.”

    Ways to Improve Your Credit After a Bankruptcy: A Checklist

    As both Detweiler and Hardekopf make clear, being proactive about rebuilding your credit score after a bankruptcy is a must. Here are some other ways to take an active role in reinvigorating your financial health post-bankruptcy:

    Know your credit score — Many people put this one off, because it can be painful. You know your credit score is low so does it really matter how low? Yes, it does. Get a copy of your credit report and know your score. Review it for any inaccuracies and make note of your debts. Only then can you come up with a plan to pay off your debts and improve your credit.     Open a new bank account — Opening a new checking and savings account will demonstrate financial stability. It can also give you a fresh slate to practice good financial habits. When you open your account, talk to the banker about signing up for automatic online bill pay. This will ensure that your bills are paid on time, which is a major factor in good credit.

    Apply for a secured credit card — If big credit card bills led to your bankruptcy, you may feel like this is a terrible idea. Why go down that path again? The best answer is that secured credit cards are one of the easiest ways to build credit and improve credit scores. Compare interest rates of different cards, so you can select a card with the best rate and a low annual fee. A rate around 15% is good and an annual fee less than $30 is desirable.

    Get a gas card or a retail card — Gas and retail credit cards will also improve your credit. If you drive a car, you will have to purchase gas. You should make those purchases work for you. Gas and retail cards typically don’t require applicants to have good credit and, in fact, cater to folks with blemished credit.

    Pay off your balance in full every month — While you are reestablishing your credit, it’s critical to pay off your full balance every month. This demonstrates to creditors that you are not a risk. Timely payments also have a significant impact on your credit score.

    Continue to monitor your credit score — Check your credit score regularly (monthly is ideal) while you are actively improving your credit. Watching that number go up can make you feel like your hard work is really paying off.

    Finally, it’s also important to remember to be patient throughout this process. A bankruptcy can impact your credit for as long as 10 years. But the more active a role you take and the sooner you get started, the quicker you can bounce back from bankruptcy.     Overview
    This fellowship program is designed for candidates who have academic and clinical career goals in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Fellows gain hospice and palliative medicine expertise as they provide consultations for medical, psychological, and spiritual concerns and coordinate team-based, holistic integrative approaches. Palliative care services are provided to adults and children through multiple settings, including inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and day-hospital clinics. Trainees encounter patients with common and rare diseases from all walks of life, and in both research and community settings. Candidates must have:

    • a MD or DO degree from an ACGME-accredited medical school
    • satisfactorily completed three postgraduate years of training at the time of appointment
    • ABMS board eligibility or certification in one of the following specialties: internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, oncology, anesthesiology, surgery, or radiation oncology
    • unrestricted state medical licenses and the ability to be licensed in Washington DC and Maryland by the beginning of training.

    Program Structure
    This one year fellowship program offers training that leads to board eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Fellows receive broad, practical experience in palliative medicine and hospice care through inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine rotations at the NIH Clinical Center (approximately half the academic year), inpatient palliative medicine rotations at community Suburban Hospital (12 weeks), and home hospice (4 weeks), inpatient hospice (6 weeks), and long-term-care hospice (4 weeks) rotations at Washington Home and Community hospices. The fellowship includes a four-week elective rotation.
    Additional program highlights:

    • Fellows are expected to demonstrate academic proficiency through literature review, a peer-review quality journal article, a book chapter, or other professional writing project, or a limited and closely-mentored research project
    • Fellows are exposed to and learn about complementary therapies such as acupuncture, relaxation therapy, hypnosis, biofeedback, guided imagery, Reiki, and art therapy
    • Longitudinal self-care activities through confidential, individual meetings with social worker and chaplain
    • Longitudinal educational and clinical collaboration with NIMH Psychiatry Consult Liaison Service

    Application Information
    This program participates in the ERAS system and all applications to this fellowship should be completed through ERAS. The completed application must include three letters of recommendation. The program also participates in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP).     What Is So Important About Early Childhood Education?


    Many people have reservations about the importance of pre-kindergarten education. This was clearly manifest in 2006 when the California legislature unsuccessfully attempted to pass a law that would make pre-school education mandatory for all children. Many Californians did not agree with the importance of using tax payer funds to fund mandatory pre-school programs, including parents desiring to educate their children themselves.

    Research has show that children enrolled in Head Start programs benefit by receiving formal education before kindergarten. According to some studies, children enrolled in these programs are more behaved and have higher IQ scores upon enrolling kindergarten than their peers without formal education. Likewise, it was shown that children enrolled in Head Start programs learned quicker than children not enrolled in these programs.

    Critics of pre-kindergarten education claim the differences between children enrolled in pre-school programs and children not receiving formal education are only discernible during kindergarten, first, and second grade. During subsequent years, children who’ve not received formal education prior to kindergarten test at the same level and behave like their peers with pre-kindergarten formal education. Therefore, Head Start children may be at an advantage for a couple of years, but after that, their classmates perform at similar levels. Another major problem with Head Start programs is that children qualifying for these programs usually come from families living below poverty-line, so these programs are not readily available for children from all backgrounds. However, children can receive formal education in other ways other than Head Start programs, including daycare and parents teaching their young children. Even though children in daycare programs can develop intellectually, children benefit most when parents stay at home with their children and educate them.

    Most childhood education specialists claim that young children learn best when they’re not pushed too hard, they have an opportunity to interact with their peers, and their parents and instructors treat them kindly. Likewise, children learn best when instruction and educational activities are only a small portion of their days. This is especially true of children enrolled in pre-school programs since it’s not good for young children to be separated from their parents for extended periods of time. Children usually do not benefit in programs with inexperienced teachers and large classroom sizes.

    Children taught at an early age usually benefit in the following ways: improved social skills, less or no need for special education instruction during subsequent school years, better grades, and enhanced attention spans. Likewise, some researchers have concluded that young children enrolled in pre-school programs usually graduate from high school, attend college, have fewer behavioral problems, and do not become involved with crime in their adolescent and young adult years.

    The research detailing these benefits was completed during the 80’s. In addition to benefiting children experiencing normal development, it was also shown that children with learning or other physical disabilities benefit immensely from pre-kindergarten education. Also, children with parents highly involved in their pre-kindergarten education do not experience the same positive results from Head Start programs as children coming from homes where it’s not as much an emphasis. Children taught how to speak a second language during their early developmental years are also in a better position to learn English at a young age.

    Many people do not feel the government should determine whether children should be required to receive formal pre-kindergarten education. One reason for this is children who are educated by their parents during their early developmental years experience the same benefits as children enrolled in pre-school programs, especially children receiving a lot of attention from parents. Parents deciding to educate their young children themselves should utilize creative ideas and activities when educating them.

    No matter the differences in opinion about formal pre-kindergarten education, children benefit from receiving some type of education during their early developmental years. However, there is not one-size fits all instruction best suited for all children. While some children benefit immensely from pre-school, it may not be the best educational setting for other children. In most cases, children benefit most by receiving educational instruction from their parents. Parents must evaluate a child’s unique personality before determining which program is best suited for a child since not all programs benefit children the same way.

    You can become a registered nurse through an approved diploma / certificate program administered by a hospital or educational institution.     Associate s Degree (ADN) RN Programs

    Another way to become a registered nurse is through the completion of an Associate s degree in nursing program. Most Associate s degree programs take 18-24 months to complete at a local community college. Once the student has earned their ADN they can sign up to take the NCLEX-RN exam. These programs are also fairly quick to complete and relatively cheap since they can be completed at junior colleges. The nice thing about having an Associate s degree is that you can always go back to school to earn your Bachelor s degree at a later time. If you decide to enroll in a Bachelor s degree program you will only need about two years to complete your degree.

    Bachelor s Degree (BSN) RN Programs

    The best career choice for a future registered nurse is to enroll in a four year Bachelor s degree in nursing program. Although this degree will take about four years to complete, the future graduate will possess a valuable degree that can be used in several different ways. A student who graduates from a BSN program can take the NCLEX-RN test and become a licensed registered nurse. An RN who holds a Bachelor s degree will be preferred by employers over RNs with a lesser degree or no degree at all. An RN with a BSN degree can also apply for nursing management positions and advance quickly within the nursing profession into more specialized fields. Lastly, a BSN degree allows the individual to pursue other careers outside of nursing. A four year degree from a reputable university has value in the US economy and is a signal of academic achievement and general competence. Holding a bachelor s degree in nursing also puts you one step closer to achieving a Master s degree with about 18 months of additional schooling.

    The online master degree in early childhood education is designed for preschool, childcare, and early learning educators and administrators. It’s a non-licensure program that will not allow graduates to teach students above 3 years of age in public schools. The curriculum is built around the following fundamental early childhood education principles:

      • The teacher is the decision-maker.
      • Learning is relationship-based; relationships between adults and children and between children and their peers are crucial to development and success.
      • Active partnerships with families strengthen children’s learning and potential.
      • Learning can and should be individualized to meet the needs of every young child, including those with disabilities

    Most positions in the field of early childhood education involve working directly with young children either through teaching, administrative, or leadership positions.

    Graduates with a non-licensure master’s degree in early childhood education typically pursue a terminal degree in the field or director-level roles in schools, agencies, and similar organizations.

    Posted 8/26/14Policy Field Advisory – A memorandum to ensure that all multidisciplinary evaluation programs approved pursuant to section 4410 of the Education Law understand that Education Law does not permit use of school psychologists without appropriate professional licensure under Title VIII of the Education Law is now available.

    Model Certificate – A model certificate for award of the New York State (NYS) Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential is now available. Each school district is responsible for developing a certificate at the local level that is similar in form to the district diploma. The certificate must not use the term “diploma” and it must indicate that the NYS CDOS Commencement Credential is endorsed by the NYS Board of Regents as a certificate of readiness for entry level employment.

    Professional Development -The P-12: Office of Special Education is pleased to announce regional professional development workshops to be offered by the Technical Assistance Center on Disproportionality for the 2014-15 school year to assist school districts in understanding the root cause of, and how to systemically address, the disproportionate assignment of various subgroups in special education.

    Posted 7/24/14Policy Field Advisory – A memorandum regarding the permanent adoption the amendment of section 200.5 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education to eliminate the requirement for parental consent prior to the initial provision of special education services and programs during the months of July and August is now available.

    Policy Field Advisory – Sections 200.7, 200.15 and 200.22 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education have been amended to conform to Chapter 501 of the Laws of 2012 and the regulations, guidelines and procedures established by the Justice Center. The regulations, which first became effective June 30, 2013, were subsequently revised and were adopted on a permanent basis effective on May 14, 2014.

    Field Advisory – The P-12: Office of Special Education has developed resources to assist parents of children with disabilities to have a better understanding of the Common Core Learning Standards and how the child’s individualized education program (IEP) should include recommendations to support their child’s progress towards those standards. Translations of these resources are now available in Spanish, Korean, Russian, Chinese, and Haitian Creole.

    Field Advisory – A memorandum on the Common Core Learning Standards and students with disabilities is now available. This memorandum provides guidance and information on the roles and responsibilities of the Committee on Special Education to align the development and implementation of each student’s individualized education programs to the State’s learning standards; the importance of purposeful planning to address students’ needs; and information for parents of students with disabilities.

    District Data – The 2012-13 Special Education School District Data Profile for each New York State public school district is now available.

    Policy Field Advisory – A new joint memorandum from the Office of Special Education and STAC/Medicaid Unit with additional information regarding State reimbursement for students with disabilities in approved private schools is now available.

    Amendment to Education Law – Section 4402 of New York State Education Law has been amended by Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2014 to repeal the requirement that the district obtain parental consent prior to the initial provision of special education services to a student with a disability in a 12-month special service and/or program.

    Forms and Notices – The New York State Procedural Safeguards Notice: Rights for Parents of Children with Disabilities, Ages 3-21 has been revised to reflect the recent amendment to section 4402 of New York State Education Law by Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2014, relating to parental consent for initial provision of extended school year services.

    Policy Memorandum – A memorandum providing additional guidance and protocols related to the health and safety of students with disabilities with elopement behaviors is now available.

    Applications – A memorandum providing updated procedures, forms and policy relating to a school district’s responsibility to submit timely and complete applications, as prescribed in section 200.6(j) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, for approval of State reimbursement of tuition costs for placements of students with disabilities in out-of-State approved residential programs is now available.

    Professional Development – The New York State Education Department, P-12: Office of Special Education and the Career and Technical Education Office are pleased to announce regional conferences on the New York State Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential.

    Forms and Notices – The Sample Due Process Complaint Notice has been revised to request information from parents who request an impartial hearing as to whether they have another impartial hearing pending or, within the prior year, had requested an impartial hearing and subsequently withdrew their request.

    Late Applications for Master of Education Programs

    The application deadline for the Master of Education in Counselling (Prince George), Multidisciplinary Leadership (Prince George), and Special Education (online/synchronous) has been extended until February 15, 2017. These applications will be considered late so they MUST be in paper format and couriered to UNBC. The application can be found here .

    Binding of Master’s Theses and Projects

    The UNBC Graduate Programs will no longer send out theses and projects for professional binding beyond the required copies. If students are interested in local binding or the binder used by Graduate Programs, they should here for further details.

    Grading Scheme for Bachelor of Education and Master of Education programs

    The School of Education adopted a grading scheme different than the UNBC standardized grading system for each of the degree programs as represented in the Undergraduate and Graduate Calendars. The Bachelor of Education grading scheme has been used in the Bachelor of Education program since 2007. The Master of Education grading scheme was adopted effective immediately at the September 1st, 2015 Annual General Meeting. Any questions should be direct to the School of Education Chair, Dr. Andrew Kitchenham .

    There are a number of research opportunities for School of Education faculty through the UNBC Research Office and through outside agencies. As well, through the School of Education, each tenured, tenure-track, and term instructor is eligible for a small stipend for presenting at or attending a conference once a year. For research involving human subjects, the Research Ethics Board requires a detailed application and meets once a month for most of the academic year.

    BCTF Maxwell Cameron Award

    Each year, the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation honours the memory of Maxwell A. Cameron with the presentation of a silver lapel pin and monetary award to selected education students who have completed their final year of education and training at one of BC’s public universities.

    At UNBC, the outstanding Teacher Candidates in both the Elementary Years and Secondary Years stream are selected through a process of nomination by their Cooperating Teachers, Practicum Supervisors, and/or the School of Education faculty and the evaluation of their academic and professional preparation, practicum work, and their commitment to social justice issues.

    The Multidisciplinary Leadership specialization is designed to prepare graduates to take on roles of responsibility or leadership in a number of educational or community environments. In particular, our graduates will develop skills in collaboration and communication, as well as specific leadership practices that enable the creation of positive and innovative organizational environments. At the same time, a rigorous academic focus provides the knowledge that is necessary to ground effective practice in the diverse and rich scholarship of leadership.     Special Education Specialization (next start date: September 2018)

    The Special Education specialization prepares students to provide professional services and leadership in Special Education and educational programs offered in schools and other educational institutions. The part-time program includes an integrated core of required courses, elective courses, and thesis, project portfolio, or comprehensive examination routes.

    This Special Education specialization is delivered online in its entirety but students should understand that it is synchronous (in front of a computer with a headset on a certain day at a specific time). It requires a minimum of 31 graduate credit hours for completion, with an option to take up to 10 additional elective credit hours within the degree route. The Special Education specialization requires students to complete five (5) required courses, and a sufficient number of elective courses to meet the minimum 31 credit hour graduation requirement including the comprehensive examination (3 credit hours), portfolio (3 credits), project (6 credit hours), or thesis (9 credit hours) routes. The normal completion rate for full-time students is between two and four years and between three and six years for part-time students.
