While Woodland Hills Private School is open to all students and not exclusively for gifted, talented and high achieving students, many families choose WHPS for the advanced and enriched academic program. Over the past few years, with the adoption of cutting-edge curriculum and enhanced teacher training, we have found new ways to help our high-achieving students reach new heights.

To that end, we were pleased this week to receive our students’ ERB results from the spring. This assessment compares our students to peers in private and independent schools across the country, and unlike the test children take in California public schools, the ERB uses a constructed response section to look at students’ thinking, not just multiple choice questions. Thus, it assesses critical thinking at a much deeper level.

Here are the results from this year’s graduating class:

LOGICAL THINKING: QUANTITATIVE REASONING, MATHEMATICS

  • 60% of our students scored in the 8thstanine, which means they were in the top 11% of students who tested nationally .
  • 87% of our students scored in the 7th stanine, which means they were in the top 23% of students who tested nationally .

LITERACY: READING, WRITING, VERBAL REASONING

  • 53% of our students scored in the 8th stanine, which means they were in the top 11% of students who tested nationally .
  • 73% of our students scored in the 7th stanine. which means they were in the top 23% of students who tested nationally.

Parents in grades 3-5 will be receiving their child’s individual ERB score report via email this week. Please watch for this email and don’t hesitate to contact the school office if you have any questions.

Welcome to Continental Elementary School District No. 39

Continental School District No. 39, home of the Continental Colts, has served families in the Green Valley area since 1916. Continental School’s name came from the Intercontinental Rubber Company, established in the area at the request of President Woodrow Wilson, during World War I. Our unique location, at the base of Madera Canyon, offers unobstructed views of the truly unique desert landscape. The district has always been committed to educational excellence and celebrated its 100th year in 2016.

Green Valley was established as a retirement community in the 1960’s and now boasts a thriving population of over 21,000 people. While Green Valley is still predominately a retirement community, there are approximately 200 families whose children attend Continental School. Our school and the community work hand in hand for the betterment of the community and the students at Continental. Our students benefit from the experiences of a wide range of community and parent volunteers who actively assist with a variety of clubs, special programs, after-school sports, and activities. This special bond between our students and our many volunteers make our district a truly unique place to be.

Important Information for our Certificated Staff

In compliance with HB 1522, Continental Elementary School District #39 is notifying its certificated teachers of Continental ESD’s intention to increase salaries of its teachers by 1.06% per the guidance set forth in HB 1522.

All interested parties are invited to attend the July 17, 2017, governing board meeting, at which time the board will be voting to approve contract addendums based on the recently passed House bill 1522 (1.06% teacher salary increase). The addendums will relate to the 2017-2018 school year contracts for certificated staff who taught in Arizona for the 2016-2017 school year. The formula for calculating the new total compensation will be: base salary + HB 1522 funds.

Open enrollment

For the 2017-2018 school year the governing board will allow children of staff members to open enroll, as well as students who are currently open enrolled if applications are received before the set deadline. New non-resident students will be allowed to submit applications for open enrollment and may be accepted based on the pre-established criteria set forth by the board at the January 9 meeting. Please take a moment to review the open enrollment information for the 2017-2018 school year.

Digital Running Records on Raz-Plus

With our Online Running Record tool, Raz-Plus or Raz-Kids members can:

  • Assign and listen to recordings of Benchmark Passages and Books.
  • Score recordings using an online running record tool.

BENCHMARK PASSAGES & RUNNING RECORDS

Find students’ instructional levels by assessing their reading skills with developmentally appropriate texts while recording reading behavior. Benchmark Passages are short text selections that are one part of a three-part process to help place students at their instructional levels for leveled reading sessions and to assess their readiness to progress to the next level.

Why Benchmark Passages

Benchmark Passages assess comprehension and reward students’ progress from level to level. They are one part of a three-part process that provides a more complete assessment of reading behavior and comprehension than any of the parts independently.

  • Each level has 2 fiction and 2 nonfiction passages.
  • Each level has at least 1 fiction-nonfiction passage pair on the same topic.
  • Each passage uses a level-appropriate percentage of words from leveled books at that reading level.
    • aa-E = 100%
    • F-J = 95% + 5% new words
    • K-Z = 90% + 10% new words
  • The text of the entire passage is used in the Running Record.
  • Most are one page long, but upper level passages can be two pages.
  • ALL are available on Raz-Plus .

How to Use Benchmark Passages

  1. Give a student a Benchmark Passage he or she has never seen before to read aloud. If you prefer to use familiar text, use the fiction-nonfiction topic pair at each level. Use one passage from the pair to support a student’s understanding of the topic before assessing with the other passage.
  2. Record the student’s reading behavior using the passage’s Running Record form.
  3. If a student scores 90 percent, assess the student’s comprehension using a Quick Check from Level A-Z and Retelling Rubrics .
  4. If a student scores from 90%-94% percent on the running record and answers comprehension questions at 80%-100%, he or she is at an instructional level. (For more details, see About Running Records ).
  5. Use Benchmark WOWzers to reward students’ progress from level to level.

Welcome to Desert Mesa Elementary

Welcome to Desert Mesa Elementary, home of the Bobcats. We are located in Yuma, Arizona, between Gila Ridge High School and Arizona Western College. We wear our maroon and gray with pride. We are proud to be a pre-K through fifth grade school, with a “B” school rating from the Arizona Department of Education.

We are happy to provide a wonderful education environment for your children. Desert Mesa is safe and friendly, with just over 750 students enrolled. We encourage learning and exploration. We take great responsibility in educating your children and developing their talents to high standards.

Desert Mesa is involved in two outstanding programs to enhance student learning. We are a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports school. A major part of this project is making students aware of the behaviors we expect in various areas of the campus.

We also endorse being healthy. Our students are involved in the Feeling Good Mileage Club. Students track their progress in miles with earning “feet” to go on their necklaces. They receive one “foot” for every five miles they have walked. We also encourage parents, siblings, and friends to walk.

We, the staff of Desert Mesa Elementary, have a goal to provide effective instruction for each child at his or her appropriate instructional level. We take great care in choosing and providing instruction and materials that will enable your child to achieve their goals.

We believe that all children can and will learn when presented with direct effective instruction at the appropriate level. We encourage them to achieve their potential in a student-centered, challenging atmosphere.

It is our goal to have 100% of our students on grade level or above in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. This is an awesome task. We cannot do it alone. We must work together. The staff of Desert Mesa Elementary is composed of highly qualified, professional teachers who have the best interest of your children in mind and heart. The other half of your child’s learning support team is you, the parents. We need to work together to provide the best school year possible.
