The other day, my team uncovered some videos of the news interviews I had done back in the 1980s. Those were heady times. It was the start of the corporate takeover and shareholder rights era, and I was not just in the thick of it, I was driving it. And communicating clearly and effectively was critical to our success.

Strong communication has always been my core asset. I’ve always believed you can trace every problem to a lack of communication or lack of clarity in communication.

These days, I sometimes find myself literally at a loss for words. Over the Christmas holiday, I had several strokes. But with a little determination and some aggressive speech therapy, I regained 90 percent of my speech.

However, last week, I had a Texas-sized fall — one that required hospitalization. I am still mentally strong, and I comprehend and process information like I did before the incident. It’s just a little hard to find the words I m looking for to speak clearly. Speech therapy will fix that, I’m confident.

Just as I exercise my body daily I will exercise my brain and continue with rigorous speech therapy to regain what I can. I am always up for a good challenge.

Nine years ago today, we launched the Pickens Plan. We knew we had a great idea, and people across the country agreed. We d held focus groups and found that Americans knew about the problem, but saw that the country lacked an energy plan. They were hungry for something that would work, a specific energy plan that included a little bit of everything solar, wind, and natural gas.

Une table-ronde, animée par Fabien SOULIÉ, enseignant-chercheur, a abordé le thème de « La fabrication additive dans les applications industrielles, citoyennes, de la recherche et de la formation ».

Stéphane ABED, président de la société Poly shape, Yann LEFEBVRE, président du FabLab « LabSud », André CHRYSOCHOOS, directeur du centre PRO3D et Christian JORGENSEN, professeur au CHU de Montpellier et directeur de l’unité INSERM “Cellules souches, plasticité cellulaire, médecine régénératrice et immunothérapies”, sont intervenus pour partager leurs expériences et échanger sur les applications de ces technologies.

Les diverses interventions des invités ont permis de montrer le spectre très large des champs d’applications de ces nouvelles techniques de mise en œuvre de la matière, allant de l’industrie de pointe à la recherche médicale avancée, sans oublier les applications standardsaccessibles à tous ” précise Fabien Soulié.

Ricoh unveils solar array to power New Jersey facility, celebrates environmental sustainability milestones

MALVERN, Pa. April 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Ricoh USA, Inc. today announced the latest in a series of sustainability milestones, including a new solar array that will power its West Caldwell, N.J. office facility. The array, which is set to provide for more than half of the facility’s electrical needs, literally represents the power of Ricoh’s ongoing sustainability efforts. This is the latest example of Ricoh’s environmental consciousness and measurable progress in sustainability efforts.

The solar array project began in March 2014. through collaborative work with EnterSolar. a leading New York City -based provider of solar solutions to commercial enterprises. Now live, the array is expected to generate more than 790,000 Kwh per year, providing more than 50 percent of the facility’s electrical needs. That translates to approximately 1.3 million miles driven by an average passenger vehicle, 555 fewer metric tons of CO2 produced per year and $1.9 million in energy savings over the next 10 years. The array itself is roughly 1.3 times the size of a football field.

“Concern for the environment is in Ricoh’s DNA. It’s core to our corporate identity,” said Donna Venable. Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Deputy General Manager, Shared Services, Ricoh Americas. “Since Ricoh established its Environmental Promotion Group more than 40 years ago, we have worked hard to foster sustainability from the top down and the bottom up. It’s what drove us to undertake this solar array project, it’s what drives our emissions reductions as a global company, and it’s what drives our individual employees to do their part in fostering sustainability through corporate and external programs.”

In fact, the West Caldwell facility itself has a strong sustainability history. The building has achieved ENERGY STAR® certification for three years in a row, and its on-site Biodiversity-Pollinator Garden achieved Conservation Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council .

Description

The Graduate Certificate program in Renewable Energy recognizes post-bachelor preparation for the engineering and design of modern renewable energy systems such as solar thermal, concentrated solar thermal (CSP), photovoltaic, etc. and grid integration of renewable energy. The goal is to provide a broad background in renewable energy technology that enables a certificate holder to understand the fundamental components of various renewable energy systems. At the same time, greater depth of learning is gained in a focus area for professional preparation and/or further study for an advanced degree.

Course location/delivery

The Certificate is offered at the Tampa campus and fully online.

Admission requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and should have a “B” (3.0) average for the course of undergraduate study.

The Real Cost of Leasing vs. Buying Solar Panels

Buying solar panels requires an investment and more decision-making than leasing, but over the long term the benefits of owning your system are hard to beat.

Best Ways to Pay for Your Panels

Cash
Buying your solar electric system outright is best. It usually costs $15,000 to $20,000 after tax credits and can reduce your electricity bill by 70 to 100 percent, depending on the size and orientation of your roof and local regulations. Most systems pay for themselves in five to seven years.

Home Equity Loan
If you need to finance your solar panel purchase, the most cost-effective way to do it is to use a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit. Because your house serves as collateral, these options have low interest rates (currently about 3 to 5 percent). The interest you pay is tax deductible. Equity loans range from 5 to 20 years and usually have fixed interest rates. Equity lines last 10 years and have variable rates (so the interest may increase).

Solar Loan
There are unsecured and secured solar loans. With an unsecured loan, your house doesn’t act as collateral and the interest isn’t tax deductible. Many solar installers work with lenders that offer solar loans, but you’ll probably find better rates by directly checking with banks, and credit unions. Watch out for high origination fees. Fannie Mae also offers consumers financing for solar system installations through its HomeStyle Energy Mortgage Program when they buy a new house or refinance.

Why Leasing Isn’t a Bright Idea

The steep up-front costs for a residential solar system can make a leasing company’s sales pitch sound pretty appealing: Pay little or nothing and save hundreds of dollars per year on average. (The premise is that you save because the combination of your lease payment and your electric bill is less than what you currently pay for power.) Leasing can also look seductively simple compared with buying: There’s no need to shop separately for an installer and financing; you just sign on the dotted line. So it’s not surprising that 72 percent of the people who installed residential solar systems in 2014 did so through leasing or another type of third-party arrangement. But the reality is not quite so sunny.

Your Savings Will Be Modest
People who lease their solar systems save far less than those who buy them outright or with a loan (they also miss out on federal tax benefits and any local incentives). Many leases contain an escalator clause that can further reduce savings by increasing payments 3 percent per year. So if you’re paying 12 cents per kilowatt-hour in year one, with a 3 percent escalator, you’ll be paying 18.2 cents in year 15. That means that if the cost of energy doesn’t rise as quickly as the contracted lease payments increase, your savings could evaporate.

You Lose Control of Your Roof
Leasing companies want to maximize their profit, so there’s a chance you could wind up with more panels than you want and that they could be installed in highly visible places—such as facing the street—without any regard to appearance. To avoid that, check the final system design and placement before signing the lease. It could be different from the initial mock-up.

Leases Can Scare Off Home Buyers
If you put your house on the market before the lease is up (usually 20 years), you will either have to buy out the lease or the person purchasing your home will have to assume it—which some are reluctant to do.

That’s what happened to Andrew and Nora Barber, who had to buy out the lease on the solar system on their Clovis, Calif. home after two prospective buyers were frightened away by it. “I offered the solar company $16,000, which was the total of all the payments for the remainder of the contract,” Andrew says. “But $21,000 was the buyout price in the contract, and the company wouldn’t budge.”

Some solar leasing companies may offer to relocate their systems from one house to another. That could cost $500 for an initial audit and another $500 to transfer the panels, if the leasing company determines it can be done. You would also need approval from your utility and local landmarks commission or the condo or homeowner’s association, if applicable. Plus the new house must be able to accommodate the old system.

And remember: At the end of the lease, the solar company could remove the system—and your savings along with it.

Service Plans Don’t Serve You
Though leasing companies tout their service plans, maintenance is a red herring. “Generally, there’s really no scenario where the maintenance plan is going to kick in,” says Joshua Pearce, an engineering professor and solar expert at the Michigan Tech Open Sustainability Technology Lab. Equipment problems aren’t covered by the maintenance plan, they’re covered by the warranty. And if a storm destroys your panels, the damage may be covered by your homeowners insurance.

That’s why—whether you buy or lease—it’s essential that you inform your insurer. (Roof-mounted solar is generally added as part of a standard homeowners policy at no additional cost; ground-mounted solar may require an insurance rider.)

They don t do any manufacturing, but they are leasing and installation specialists. Their contracts are evenly divided over residential, commercial and government contracts. They also are one of the first choices for PPA customers and those just beginning to explore solar power.

They can also bring to an under-served area solar access through their negotiated access.

8. PetersenDean – PetersenDean started in 1984 and have been one of the primary leaders and innovators in the US solar energy market since. They combine roofing services with solar installation. The solar component is a relatively new addition to their divisions, but their longstanding history in the roofing marker has given them the edge on what different markets need to make solar energy viable.     Chapter 3: Resistance and Static Electricity

    As we have learned, some kinds of atoms contain loosely attached electrons. Electrons can be made to move easily from one atom to another. When those electrons move among the atoms of matter, a current of electricity is created.

    Take a piece of wire. The electrons are passed from atom to atom, creating an electrical current from one end to the other. Electrons are very, very small. A single copper penny contains more than 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1×1022) electrons.

    Electricity “flows” or moves through some things better than others do. The measurement of how well something conducts electricity is called its resistance.

    Resistance in wire depends on how thick and how long it is, and what it’s made of. The thickness of wire is called its gauge. The smaller the gauge, the bigger the wire. Some of the largest thicknesses of regular wire is gauge 1.

    Different types of metal are used in making wire. You can have copper wire, aluminum wire, even steel wire. Each of these metals has a different resistance; how well the metal conducts electricity. The lower the resistance of a wire, the better it conducts electricity.

    Copper is used in many wires because it has a lower resistance than many other metals. The wires in your walls, inside your lamps and elsewhere are usually copper.

    A piece of metal can be made to act like a heater. When an electrical current occurs, the resistance causes friction and the friction causes heat. The higher the resistance, the hotter it can get. So, a coiled wire high in resistance, like the wire in a hair dryer, can be very hot.

    Some things conduct electricity very poorly. These are called insulators. Rubber is a good insulator, and that’s why rubber is used to cover wires in an electric cord. Glass is another good insulator. If you look at the end of a power line, you’ll see that it is attached to some bumpy looking things. These are glass insulators. They keep the metal of the wires from touching the metal of the towers.

    Another type of electrical energy is static electricity. Unlike current electricity that moves, static electricity stays in one place.

    Try this experiment.

    Rub a balloon filled with air on a wool sweater or on your hair. Then hold it up to a wall. The balloon will stay there by itself.

    Tie strings to the ends of two balloons. Now rub the two balloons together, hold them by strings at the end and put them next to each other. They’ll move apart.

    Rubbing the balloons gives them static electricity. When you rub the balloon it picks up extra electrons from the sweater or your hair and becomes slightly negatively charged.

    The negative charges in the single balloon are attracted to the positive charges in the wall.

    The two balloons hanging by strings both have negative charges. Negative charges always repel negative charges and positive always repels positive charges. So, the two balloons’ negative charges “push” each other apart.

    Static electricity can also give you a shock. If you walk across a carpet, shuffling your feet and touching something made of metal, a spark can jump between you and the metal object. Shuffling your feet picks up additional electrons spread over your body. When you touch a metal doorknob or something with a positive charge the electricity jumps across the small gap from your fingers just before you touch the metal knob. If you walk across a carpet and touch a computer case, you can damage the computer.

    One other type of static electricity is very spectacular. It’s the lightning in a thunder and lightning storm. Clouds become negatively charged as ice crystals inside the clouds rub up against each other. Meanwhile, on the ground, the positive charge increases. The clouds get so highly charged that the electrons jump from the ground to the cloud, or from one cloud to another cloud. This causes a huge spark of static electricity in the sky that we call lightning.

    You’ll remember from Chapter 2 that the word “electricity” came from the Greek words “elektor,” for “beaming sun” and “elektron,” both words describing amber. Amber is fossilized tree sap millions of years old and has hardened as hard as a stone.

    Around 600 BCE (Before the Common Era) Greeks noticed a strange effect: When rubbing “elektron” against a piece of fur, the amber would start attracting particles of dust, feathers and straw. No one paid much attention to this “strange effect” until about 1600 when Dr. William Gilbert investigated the reactions of magnets and amber and discovered other objects can be made “electric.”

    Gilbert said that amber acquired what he called “resinous electricity” when rubbed with fur. Glass, however, when rubbed with silk, acquired what he termed “vitreous electricity.”

    He thought that electricity repelled the same kind and attracts the opposite kind of electricity. Gilbert and other scientists of that time thought that the friction actually created the electricity (their word for the electrical charge).

    In 1747, Benjamin Franklin in America and William Watson in England both reached the same conclusion. They said all materials possess a single kind of electrical “fluid.” They didn’t really know anything about atoms and electrons, so they called how it behaved a “fluid.”

    They thought that this fluid can penetrate matter freely and couldn’t be created or destroyed. The two men thought that the action of rubbing (like rubbing amber with fur) moves this unseen fluid from one thing to another, electrifying both.

    Franklin defined the fluid as positive and the lack of fluid as negative. Therefore, according to Franklin, the direction of flow was from positive to negative. Today, we know that the opposite is true. Electricity flows from negative to positive. Others took the idea even further saying this that two fluids are involved. They said items with the same fluid attract each other. And opposite types of fluid in objects will make them repel each other.

    All of this was only partially right. This is how scientific theories develop. Someone thinks of why something occurs and then proposes an explanation. It can take centuries sometime to find the real truth. Instead of electricity being a fluid, it is the movement of the charged particles between the objects. the two objects are really exchanging electrons.

    Description of Technique

    Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a form of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) where a small probe is scanned across the sample to obtain information about the sample’s surface. The information gathered from the probe’s interaction with the surface can be as simple as physical topography or as diverse as measurements of the material’s physical, magnetic, or chemical properties. These data are collected as the probe is scanned in a raster pattern across the sample to form a map of the measured property relative to the X-Y position. Thus, the AFM microscopic image shows the variation in the measured property, e.g. height or magnetic domains, over the area imaged.

    The AFM probe has a very sharp tip, often less than 100 Å diameter, at the end of a small cantilever beam. The probe is attached to a piezoelectric scanner tube, which scans the probe across a selected area of the sample surface. Interatomic forces between the probe tip and the sample surface cause the cantilever to deflect as the sample’s surface topography (or other properties) changes. A laser light reflected from the back of the cantilever measures the deflection of the cantilever. This information is fed back to a computer, which generates a map of topography and/or other properties of interest. Areas as large as about 100 µm square to less than 100 nm square can be imaged.

    Analytical Information

    Contact Mode AFM – The AFM probe is scanned at a constant force between the probe and the sample surface to obtain a 3D topographical map. When the probe cantilever is deflected by topographical changes, the scanner adjusts the probe position to restore the original cantilever deflection. The scanner position information is used to create a topographical image. Lateral resolution of

    Intermittent Contact (Tapping Mode) AFM – In this mode, the probe cantilever is oscillated at or near its resonant frequency. The oscillating probe tip is then scanned at a height where it barely touches or “taps” the sample surface. The system monitors the probe position and vibrational amplitude to obtain topographical and other property information. Accurate topographical information can be obtained even for very fragile surfaces. Optimum resolution is about 50 Å lateral and

    Lateral Force Microscopy – This mode measures the lateral deflection of the probe cantilever as the tip is scanned across the sample in contact mode. Changes in lateral deflection represent relative frictional forces between the probe tip and the sample surface.

    Phase Detection Microscopy – With the system operating in Tapping mode, the cantilever oscillation is damped by interaction with the sample surface. The phase lag between the drive signal and actual cantilever oscillation is monitored. Changes in the phase lag indicate variations in the surface properties, such as viscoelasticity or mechanical properties. A phase image, typically collected simultaneously with a topographical image, maps the local changes in material’s physical or mechanical properties.

    Magnetic Force Microscopy – This mode images local variations in the magnetic forces at the sample’s surface. The probe tip is coated with a thin film of ferromagnetic material that will react to the magnetic domains on the sample surface. The magnetic forces between the tip and the sample are measured by monitoring cantilever deflection while the probe is scanned at a constant height above the surface. A map of the forces shows the sample’s natural or applied magnetic domain structure.


    Image Analysis – Since the images are collected in digital format, a wide variety of image manipulations are available for AFM data. Quantitative topographical information, such as lateral spacing, step height, and surface roughness are readily obtained. Images can be presented as two-dimensional or three-dimensional representations in hard copy or as digital image files for electronic transfer and publication.

    Nanoindentation – A specialized probe tip is forced into the sample surface to obtain a measure of the material’s mechanical properties in regions as small as a few nanometers. (See the Handbook section on Nanoindentation Hardness Testing .)

    Sample Requirements

    No sample preparation is typically required. Samples can be imaged in air or liquid. Sample height is limited to about 1.5 inches. Areas up to 8 inches in diameter can be fully traversed without repositioning. Larger samples can be fixtured for imaging within a limited area. Total surface roughness in the image area should not exceed about 6 µm.

Duke Energy Florida LLC (DEF) announced today it has filed a registration statement, as depositor, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a proposed initial public offering of up to $1.3 billion aggregate principal amount of Series A Senior Secured Bonds to be issued by DEF s wholly owned subsidiary, Duke Energy Florida Project Finance, LLC (DEF Project Finance).

    DEF Project Finance has been formed as a special purpose project finance subsidiary. Its limited purpose is to hold nuclear asset-recovery property and issue nuclear asset-recovery bonds secured by that property to finance certain activities of DEF related to the retirement of the Crystal River Nuclear Plant project.

    DEF Project Finance intends to use the proceeds of the offering to:

    • Purchase nuclear asset-recovery property (which consists of all rights and interests under a financing order issued to DEF by the Florida Public Service Commission pursuant to a special Florida statute) from DEF, owner of the retired Crystal River Nuclear Plant project, which in turn will use the proceeds to pay down a portion of its outstanding short-term debt and/or to make an equity distribution to its parent, Duke Energy Corporation.
    • Pay upfront financing costs.

    The offering of the bonds will be made only by means of a prospectus.     Elon Musk s solar roof tiles won t fit the bill for every home. Some homeowners won t want to replace their entire roofs. but Tesla. of course, already has a solution. They re now marketing sleek, low-profile solar panels that are easy to install and better blend in with roofs than traditional panels.

    Leave it to Tesla to offer an elegant alternative to traditional solar panels. They updated the Energy section of their website over the weekend to include new images of their solar panels. The seamless look of the new technology is thanks to integrated front skirts and no visible mounting hardware according to Tesla s website. Electrek said these features come from Zep Solar. a mounting equipment company SolarCity acquired before Tesla s acquisition. Zep Solar engineers designed the rail-less system Solar City employed to slash solar installation times in half.

    Tesla says their panels exceed industry standards for durability and lifespan on their website. Panasonic will be manufacturing the exclusive panels at the Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, New York. There aren t many specifics available for the new solar panels yet, but Electrek said they will be 325-watt panels. They noted Panasonic sells other 325 watt panels, and those have a 25-year power output warranty and a 21.76 percent module efficiency.

    Tesla and before that SolarCity used to install solar panels from multiple suppliers as many solar companies do, but told Electrek once these new panels go into production, Tesla will use them for all residential projects in the future. It seems Elon Musk aims at offering solar solutions with better aesthetics for those who have been hesitant to go solar in the past with the bulky rooftop options.
