Master of Science in Software Engineering

Texas Tech University’s online Master of Science in Software Engineering provides students with a firm foundation in the definition, development and maintenance of complex software systems using traditional engineering process methods.

Program Overview

  • 36 credit hours, non-thesis
  • Coursework is completed online.
  • Prerequisite: bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or its equivalent. In absence of the proper background, leveling courses are required.
  • Students are not required to enroll in a certain number of courses each semester, so completion time varies by individual. Learn more about the difference between part-time and full-time Student status..
  • Semester-based courses align with the Academic Calendar of Texas Tech University. New students may enroll at the beginning of any one of the four semesters throughout the year.

Application Process

Although there is no application deadline, prospective students are encouraged to submit all application materials at least three months prior to projected initial enrollment.

  1. Apply to Texas Tech University’s Graduate School.
    • Complete the Graduate Admissions Application.
      • $60 initial application fee or $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program requests, or readmission requests).
      • Students planning to pursue a master’s degree must submit Graduate Records Exam (GRE) scores to the Graduate School. Scores must be less than five years old at the time of application.
      • International students must also submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score to the Graduate School. Scores must be less than two years old at the time of application. Learn more about International Graduate Applications.
  2. Apply to the Whitacre College of Engineering.
    • Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose. To get forms for these documents, contact the Program Coordinator.
  3. Apply for financial aid and/or scholarships.
    • Financial aid is distributed based on full-time enrollment and several other eligibility requirements. Your enrolled hours as of the 12th day of class in the fall and spring semesters determines your enrollment status for the semester, and financial aid is disbursed accordingly. Attending less than full-time could mean a reduction in aid. Student status..

Program Requirements

The Master of Science in Software Engineering (MS SE) through the Computer Science department is intended to give the graduate a firm foundation in the definition, development and maintenance of complex software systems using traditional engineering process methods.

The degree plan for students pursuing a MS SE degree must include the following courses:

  • CS 5363 Software Project Management
  • CS 5373 Software Modeling and Architecture
  • CS 5374 Software Verification and Validation

In addition, students select electives from the following categories:

Computer Science Electives

Students must take five courses from the SE electives and four courses from the CS electives. As non-thesis students, distance students cannot apply CS 6000 or CS 7000 toward their degrees. In addition, students must pass a written comprehensive examination near the end of their studies.

    Students looking for the best chemical engineering schools have many options, including Arizona State University, Florida State University, and the University of Florida. These institutions are top ranked public schools or universities, offering chemical engineering programs that have been highly rated by U.S. News and World Report.

    Arizona State University

    Arizona State University in Tempe is home to the IRA A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. Its graduate chemical engineering program was ranked among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News World Report in 2016. In addition to master’s and doctoral degrees in this field, the school offers a bachelor’s degree program. Process design, modern separations, chemical reactor design, and organic chemistry are some of the undergraduate courses.

    University of Florida

    The University of Florida in Gainesville houses 16 colleges as well as 150 research centers. The Herbert Wertheim college of engineering offers a 26th ranked graduate chemical engineering program, according to U.S. News and World Report in 2016. Specializations available to students pursuing chemical engineering master’s and doctoral degrees include corrosion, polymer science, advanced materials, biochemical engineering, and colloid science. Coursework covers such topics as cellular processes, cell mechanics, molecular basis of chemical engineering, continuum basis of chemical engineering, thermodynamics, and interfacial phenomena.     Florida State University

    In conjunction with Florida A M University, Florida State University offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering. Undergraduate students can choose from three areas of study: chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and chemical materials engineering. The school also features a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program, while non-chemical engineering majors who would like to pursue a graduate degree can take advantage of a special transition program.     Maine is seeing growth in several engineering related sectors including: environmental engineers, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, and industrial engineers.

    Maine has several tax credit programs specifically designed to encourage the growth of manufactoring companies in the state including the Research Expense Tax Credit, R D Super Credit, High-Technology Investment Tax Credit, and Sales Tax exemptions for engineering companies.

    Some of the larger companies that are hiring engineering professionals in Maine include: L. L. Bean, Fairchild Semiconductor International, IDEXX Laboratories, Cianbro Companies, Wright Express Corporation, Webber Oil Company, Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance, Olympia Sports, Pine State Trading, and Darling’s.

    Engineering Education in Maine

    There are three schools in Maine with engineering programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET.) These programs, which can lead to engineering licensure are the University of Maine, Maine Maritime and the University of Southern Maine. Because not all programs at the University of Southern Maine are accredited, it is recommended you check with the specific program you are interested in to guarantee you can be eligible for licensure upon completion. All three offer Bachelor degrees, only one offers a Master’s or PhD program. These programs do offer plans in many specialties like chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental, bioengineering etc.

    There are also a number of engineering programs in Maine that are viable options for you to consider, but completion of them alone will not make you eligible to become a licensed Professional Engineer.

    The Maine Society of Professional Engineers and Maine State Chamber of Commerce offer scholarships for engineering candidates. Each school will also advise students about financial aid and scholarships offered through the schools.

    Outlook for Engineering Jobs in Maine

    The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics measured in May 2011, the mean annual wage for engineers in Maine was $66,840. Job opportunities in the state are predicted to be average. As in many states, locations of engineering positions will be based in the larger towns, such as Portland, Bangor or the capital city of Augusta.     Question #1: We have 4.16kV feeder. What Glow Tubes should we use?

    Answer: You have to install R 05010001 Glow Tubes. These are the only ones that will operate and lit properly on 4.16kV line to line voltage.

    Question #2: Our switchgear is on 13.2kV. Shall we use R or RS style Glow Tubes on outgoing feeder cables?

    Answer: Either will work since R 05010001 Glow Tubes operate on 4kV+ line to line voltage and RS 05010002 Glow Tubes operate on 10kV+ line to line voltage. However, since RS 05010002 Glow Tubes have distinctive spiral light we will recommend it. Please refer to photo below.

    Question #3: Our switchgear is 50 years old. Our Glow Tubes are hold by lousy pieces of bent metal. What is your suggestion?

    Answer: Please replace existing old holders with our SPRING CHARGED mounting brackets p/n 05010090.

    Twenty students from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, ranging from freshmen to doctoral candidates, took first place in the international Maritime RobotX Challenge in Oahu, Hawaii this weekend with their autonomous maritime system – the NaviGator AMS. The RobotX Challenge is designed to foster student interest in autonomous robotic systems operating in the maritime domain.

  • MAE students have redesigned and built critical parts for seating in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the Athletic Association. Permanently-installed seat backs are available for season ticket holders, but corrosion has been damaging the brackets. Replacement parts are no longer available, so the Athletic Association turned to MAE for a solution.

  • Gator Motorsports Formula SAE team finished 3rd place overall at the 2015 Formula SAE Michigan competition. The podium finish was our best ever showing, with the team earning 1st place in acceleration, 1st place in powertrain development, 2nd place in engineering design and 2nd place in endurance.

    Congratulations to Nikhil D. Londhe, a current MAE PhD student, on receiving the Walter D. Hodson award. The award is given to the lead author of the best paper written by a Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers member published by the STLE. In his award-winning paper, Nikhil and his co-authors (Dr. Nagaraj K. Arakere and Dr. Raphael T. Haftka) presented a modified set of data to be used when predicting the fatigue life of modern bearings.

    A penetration test is done to evaluate the security of a computer system or network by simulating an attack by a malicious user / hacker. The process involves active exploitation of security vulnerabilities that may be present due to poor or improper system configuration, known and / or unknown hardware or software flaws, or operational weaknesses in process or design.

    Education Pathways – Choose a path that is right for you

    EIT now has several education pathways available to you, allowing you more flexibility and choice.

    Completing an EIT Advanced diploma provides a convenient exit point which ensures that you still receive a qualification should you need withdraw from your studies early. If you successfully complete an EIT Advanced Diploma and choose to continue your studies, you will be eligible to receive credit for a significant proportion of an EIT bachelor degree, fast-tracking your studies.

    Alternatively, if you have completed a prior qualification from another institution, you may still be eligible to apply for credit. If successful, you may choose to progress through a Bachelor degree, with part-time or full-time, completing the required units as they are scheduled.

    If you are not eligible to apply for credit, you can enter directly into our Bachelor program, and select either a full-time or part-time intensive study load depending on your personal circumstances.

    You are now able to progress smoothly through to a Master qualification, with our unique, practical delivery model. In some cases you are able to select between our interactive online approach or classroom based learning (or a combination of both); however this is subject to availability.     Essential Information

    Due to the hands-on nature of the field of environmental engineering, fully online programs are rare. While students can complete some of the courses online, the lab component of the program is typically required to be completed on campus; however, this can be done during the summer semester. Students may also be required to complete proctored exams. Additionally, since professional engineering licensure is recommended for environmental engineers, students will want to look for online programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

    A four-year degree in environmental engineering prepares graduates to take on most entry-level jobs in environmental engineering. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, ) expected environmental engineering jobs to increase about 12% during the 2014-2024 decade. Per the BLS, the average environmental engineering salary was $88,040 in 2015.
