Executive MBA

The Executive MBA is designed to better accommodate the needs of busy professionals. The 12-month program offers a convenient, business-friendly schedule with classes meeting on weekends and is delivered in a hybrid format consisting of a mix of in-person and online course offerings. Program participants also have the opportunity to spend 10 days studying outside the United States to broaden their understanding of global leadership.

The EMBA is designed for aspiring professionals with demonstrated commitment to excellence and who seek higher responsibilities in business leadership.

The EMBA provides the same foundation and rigor as our traditional MBA degree with the added bonus of providing a fast track to improved on-the-job performance and the rewards that come with success.

The EMBA consists of 36 credit hours to be completed in 12 months.

Course Structure

The fast-track, E xecutive MBA features convenient scheduling, distance learning, and Web-supported courses. The required courses will be a short four weeks (see course scheduling below).

  • Students will be required to complete a residency whereby the 1 st weekend of classes for each module will be delivered in a face-to-face format. Classes will be held at a Nashville Hotel from 2 p.m. til 6 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. til 4 p.m. on Saturday. During the weekend residency, guest speakers and presentations by renowned industry executives will facilitate class instruction and discussion to enhance the learning experience. The 2 nd through 4 th weekend of classes for each module will be delivered online and via a hybrid model. The third weekend will have a Saturday morning live lecture via web technology.
  • Summer 1 and 2: The first week of Summer 1 and Summer 2 will be a face-to-face classroom experience, with the remainder of the classes online.

Global Immersion Experience

As part of the Global Residency course offered during the summer, program participants have the opportunity to spend 10 days studying outside the United States to broaden their understanding of leadership in an emerging economy and to experience firsthand the business practices and cultures of a foreign country. The 10-day residency includes class sessions conducted by renowned faculty, visits to multinational corporations, and a host of leadership speakers and cultural immersion excursions.

    Few of us would go to our auto mechanic for medical advice; we typically seek out experts with experience related to the problem we are trying to solve. Yet on average only 25% of Standard Poor (S P) 500 companies have independent directors with related industry experience, according to data collected by CEIBS Professor of Finance Wang Cong for the period of 2000 to 2007. How effective can an independent board director be at monitoring and advising top management of a firm without having worked in the same industry?

    Manufacturing firms know they must be flexible, creative and innovative if they want to survive in today’s fiercely competitive market. But can they do this while hitting productivity targets, which are also a key component of operations? How the dynamic between innovation and quality management, which are often at cross-purposes, influences new product innovation is the focus of a new study co-authored by Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management Zhao Xiande. The study also explores how two organizational characteristics, centralization of authority and integration between functions, affect manufacturing innovation.

    Just an hour away from Shanghai by fast train is Hangzhou. Arguably the most entrepreneurial city in China, it is home to Alibaba, one of the most globally visible Chinese companies. The capital city of Zhejiang province boasts a vibrant start-up ecosystem of lesser known young companies, whose founders hope to emulate the success of Jack Ma, Alibaba’s founder.

    The toxic work culture at the ride-hailing company Uber was among the reasons why a group of investors recently forced out its CEO Travis Kalanick. The issues at Uber, which received extensive media coverage, included battles between the company and its drivers over some of its compensation practices, and an investigation into around 200 bullying and sexual harassment allegations.

    Globalization and multiculturalism have resulted in increased collaboration and exchange between different countries and cultures. We see examples of this in chains such as McDonalds opening more restaurants in China and India with localized menus, and companies like Unilever and P G launching products tailored to the needs of emerging market customers. It is no surprise, therefore, that multinational organizations view cultural intelligence (CQ), the ability to adapt and function in foreign settings, as a valuable asset in the workplace.

    Singapore Executive and Operating Committees provide fresh fruit juice at Dover Park Hospice

    On October 4, members from Deutsche Bank Singapore’s Executive and Operating Committees volunteered their time to brighten up an otherwise wet and dreary Saturday for Dover Park Hospice patients, families and staff.

    The mission at hand was a simple one: Deutsche Bank volunteers would provide to the patients made-to-order fresh fruit juices along with soft Swiss Rolls and some very sunny smiles.

    The visit started with a short briefing by the CEO of Dover Park Hospice, Dr. Stella Wee, telling the volunteers more about the hospice and good work that it does. This was followed by a frenzy of juicing activity. The volunteers walked the wards, accompanied by a small medical team, taking juice orders and chatting to patients while group of four Deutsche Bank volunteers got their hands (or more accurately, rubber gloves) dirty operating fruit juicers to meet the constant demand for fresh juices.

    While all of the patients are terminally ill, the majority with a life expectancy of less than three months, many were still able to enjoy the healthy and tasty addition to their late morning meal. What touched the hearts of all the volunteers were the tears of one patient, moved by the volunteers’ companionship on the day, which coincidentally was his birthday.

    All too quickly, the ward rounds were over, and the fruit and cake supplies depleted. As the volunteers said their goodbyes and went back to their own lives, they each took away some small comfort that they might just have made a little difference to someone else’s day, brought a smile, or lent some support and companionship, on a wet and grey morning. The fruit juices were only a simple token, but to many of the hospice’s patients and families, it was a tiny but important reminder that they were not alone.

    “Tracee’s experience as a nurse and in leading a hospice care program are a great match for the work, staff and partners of Hospice of the Red River Valley,” said Roberta Young, president of Hospice of the Red River Valley board of directors. “Additionally, she brings a well-rounded skill set and passion for hospice care—competencies critical to moving the organization forward.”

    Most recently, Capron served as vice president of care innovations at Community Hospice in Ohio, where she worked to develop community partnerships and implemented consultative services in the health care community, hospitals and nursing homes. Capron holds a master’s degree in organizational leadership, and undergraduate degrees in nursing and education.

    Hospice of Kitsap fires its executive team

    SILVERDALE Hospice of Kitsap County trustees fired the organization s executive team last week, following the recommendations of a consultant study.

    Terminated administrators included Executive Director Corrigan Gommenginger as well as the group s human resources and compliance director, development director and chief of clinical services. Board President Suzanne Plemmons said the 11-member board was responding to guidance from an independent organizational assessment completed this fall. Consultants who led the study recommended an overhaul of Hospice leadership among other changes, she said.

    Plemmons declined to discuss specific shortcomings of the executive team. She said the board felt the change was necessary to move the organization in the right direction.

    It was a very difficult decision, Plemmons said.

    Gommenginger was named executive director in 2012. He oversaw the rollout of a palliative care program, the opening of a Bremerton thrift store, and the creation of an in-home, nonmedical care program, while working to curb ongoing budget shortfalls.

    I am honored to have worked with the remarkable staff and volunteers and led Hospice of Kitsap County for the last two years, Gommenginger said in an email Monday. . I am a true believer in service of Hospice. I am excited for the direction Hospice of Kitsap County has been set on.

    The board selected Denise Hendrickson, an experienced nurse and manager, to serve as interim executive director during the search for a permanent replacement. Plemmons said she expects no interuption in services for patients during the transition. Hospice of Kitsap provided end-of-life care to nearly 700 patients in 2013.

    We re really blessed to have dedicated, competent staff, she said.

    Some Hospice of Kitsap employees had expressed concerns with the executive team. Alexander Pangborn, a registered nurse and case manager with Hospice, said a letter of no confidence signed by 17 employees was submitted to the board earlier this year.

    The bulk of hospice employees voted to join the Service Employees International Union this fall. Pangborn, who helped organize the union vote, said employees wanted to ensure adequate staffing levels and support for staff and have a stronger voice within the organization. Many felt administrators hadn t been responsive to their input, he said.

    Pangborn declined to comment on the board s decision to remove the management team but said union employees are looking forward to working with Hospice leadership.

    Really the goal of this is to make a stronger organization, he said. Our mission is a strong one. We do good work in the community every day. I couldn t imagine doing anything else.

    Plemmons said the new director will need to help refocus Hospice of Kitsap on its in-home care mission, after the group closes its Bremerton inpatient care center at the end of the year. The board hopes to find an executive with hospice or other medical experience, and strong management skills, Plemmons said.

    Our goal is to build stability in our organization, she said.

    Weldmar Hospicecare Trust is a high profile and much loved charity in Dorset providing palliative care in people’s homes, in the Dorchester hospice, nursing homes and community hospitals. The Charity plays an important role in a county with a very large and rapidly growing population of older people. Weldmar is the only agency providing specialist palliative care in north, south and west Dorset – a population of 235,000. Weldmar has an income of £8 million and 220 employees plus over 600 dedicated volunteers.

    The brief

    Prospectus was asked to lead the search for Weldmar’s next CEO, who will lead the organisation forward. The principal challenge facing the Trust is the forecast rise in demand for services due to Dorset’s extremely skewed demographics, together with the growing aspiration of patients for more choice. This requires capacity to provide flexible responsive services to patients at home, a great challenge in a very rural area with an uncoordinated and lean public sector resource. To continue to provide high quality services to people with a limited life in the future it would need to make massive changes. They needed someone with energy, integrity and creativity to lead the team into a different future.

    The appointment

    Caroline Hamblett was appointed to the post and took up the post in January 2016.

    She has worked for one of the leading providers of end-of-life and palliative care, Marie Curie Cancer Care, for over 20 years. Caroline has held a variety of positions at MCCC, starting in HR and then leading Operations (Retail, HR, FM, Skills and Training and Health Safety) and most recently working as Executive Director of Services. Caroline is currently living in Hampshire and worked in London. She will be relocating to Dorset in due course.
