Hospice Patients Create Arts Crafts As Remembrance Gifts for Family

Post navigation

Hospitalized veteran Joseph Benick works a paint by number kit at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center.

For hospitalized active duty military and veteran patients, having access to the therapeutic arts crafts provided by national nonprofit Help Hospitalized Veterans (HHV) is something that not only helps pass the time, but contributes to the overall quality of life and rehabilitation.

Over the years HHV, the largest provider of free arts crafts kits to VA and military medical facilities worldwide, has been told repeatedly about the countless benefits that arts crafts provide-they help veterans suffering traumatic brain injury by improving their concentration skills, or by diverting the attention of a cancer patient during an uncomfortable chemotherapy session. Crafts can also help improve the fine and gross motor skills of a stroke patient. The impact of working on a simple craft kit has had some amazing benefits.

HHV recently learned about a unique arts crafts program underway at the VA Bay Pines Health Care System where administrators have taken the craft program to its hospice unit. The facility is host to HHV Craft Care Specialist (CCS) Kathy Vanasse, who has helped introduce a brand new perspective on arts crafts.

Many patients, once facing and coping with impending death, are now becoming more active in the craft clinic, said Vanasse. It s so heartwarming to see these wonderful veterans put a kit together for a family member as a remembrance of them. One veteran completed HHV s Freedom Clock Kit and gave it to his family before he passed away. He asked them to think of him whenever they look at the clock.

Another item Vanasse reports great success from is the scrapbook kit. The veterans are using the scrapbooks to create something to leave behind so family members can learn their stories. One veteran made his scrapbook entirely about his military service. These projects are giving hospice patients a new sense of purpose and their families are so appreciative when they receive the keepsake.

Vanasse has been working HHV s craft program at the Bay Pines VA for two years. She says that being around veterans is something she s very comfortable with, as her husband is an Air Force veteran and her son just graduated from Marine Corps boot camp. I love working with the veterans, said Vanasse, they can be quite inspiring. Vanasse is one of 60 CCS s employed by HHV and stationed at a VA or military medical facility.

Arizona Criminal and Drunk Driving Attorney, Sonja Duckstein #family #attorney #phoenix

#

For over 25 years, Sonja Duckstein has been protecting the rights of those arrested and charged with drunk driving or related criminal offenses.

She has successfully handled hundreds of misdemeanor and felony criminal cases. Sonja Duckstein takes pride in the fact that she has the ability to effectively negotiate and settle a criminal case or litigate it if necessary. Simply put, this translates into better results for clients who have been arrested or charged with a criminal offense.

You can be assured that Sonja Duckstein will personally handle every aspect of your case.

She will obtain and review the police report with you. She will make all the court appearances required for the proper presentation of your case. She will do all of the research on your case and meet with the prosecutor in an attempt to get your case in the best position for a favorable resolution.

AZ CRIMINAL ATTORNEY

Sonja Duckstein has aggressively defended those arrested and charged with all of the following matters:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Suspension/Revocation Hearings
    • DUI/DWI Conviction
    • Chemical Test Refusal
    • Medical or Drug Suspension
    • Negligent Operator (too many tickets) Suspension

She understands that the preservation of a defendant’s license is crucially important, and organizes defense strategy and tactics around that priority.

Sonja Duckstein’s mastery of the complex and technical field of DUI/DWI law has produced an impressive record of victory both in courtrooms and in driver’s license suspension hearings.

For most people, a drunk driving arrest brings a high level of fear.

The very thought of being in jail raises concerns about personal safety, and the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license can have ruinous consequences on many levels. People sometimes lose their jobs, and the financial implications of a DUI/DWI can be staggering. If you are arrested for drunk driving, you need a lawyer who knows your concerns and will fight for your rights.

LATEST CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

If you’re looking for legal representation, and looking for someone who genuinely cares and will fight for you, then go with Sonja! She will go above and beyond! I’m pleased with her services and wouldn’t trust anyone else.

I refer clients to Sonja.

While some were beyond help, she has helped others who thought they were. There was a dog bite, car accidents. some were at fault, most were injured, all had insurance. Do not add insult (or anguish) to injury. Insurance companies represent your interest after theirs, if at all. Attorneys settle. Representing themselves, then the insurance companies, then you. NOT Sonja – She puts you 1st! Sonja will aggressively represent you! While I hope not to need her I am glad to know so I can refer her to those that may. Think you don’t need an attorney? Shouldn’t you know? Call her.

I am a worker’s comp and SS attorney here in Phoenix.

I know Sonja and she is a fantastic lawyer – for both personal injury and criminal defense. She is very responsive and caring to her clients. I highly recommend her.

Sonja Duckstein is the epitome of a client first mentality.

Her work ethic is unmatched and her knowledge of the law including our rights as citizens is top notch. I trust to refer my family, friends and clients to Sonja’s law firm because I know they will be served with honesty and fairness.

Sonja has helped two of my friends. She as very helpful with the DUI case that was an extreme DUI. My friend did not have to go to Tent City which was a relief. Sonja kept her out of jail and did a great job!

Sonja has represented family members and friends in various cases and always had outstanding results! She is aggressive, caring, and extremely reliable. I would highly recommend her in any criminal matter!

I recommend Sonja Duckstein as a lawyer. She always makes sure her clients are well aware of things that are happening with the case. Her work ethic is very aggressive which shows in end results.

I utilized Sonja’s services for a complicated matter and she exceeded my expectations in all areas-professionalism, reliability, competence promptness in returning phone calls, and results. I was completely satisfied and frequently recommend her to others.

Sonja is a unbelievable lawyer who represented my son during his DUI. She provided outstanding advice, coached my son thru the process and was able to get a greatly reduced sentence. Sonja is tremendous lawyer who I would highly recommend to anyone!

Sonja represented me when I was charged with an extreme DUI. Sonja coached me thru the process, worked extremely hard with the prosecutor’s office to get my charge reduced to a regular DUI with 24 hours time in the tent. Sonja is an outstanding attorney and I was truly blessed to have her defend me!

Very helpful and compassionate to my needs

Sonja was very kind and compassionate, she treated me like a person rather than a criminal. I was very satisfied with the results, I feel like she real had my back. Thank you Sonja!

Sonja has represented me on more than one Occasion, each outcome was a success and I felt like she had genuine concern for me throughout the entire process. She is Exceptional in every aspect! She helped me turn a very dark period in my life into a positive experience. Saying she comes highly recommended is an Understatement!

I recently used Sonja for a serious ticket.

She worked so hard and everything worked out the way we hoped, due to her knowledge and compassion. Sonja and Marcy were always available to talk to me and walk me through everything. I would recommend Sonja to anyone.

Sonja was a huge help with getting my driving with a suspended license dismissed and a few other traffic violations dismissed. She was easy to work with and genuinely interested in helping me. If you need help in traffic court she’s definitely the way to go.

Intelligence and Experience

Sonja, because of her tenasity intelligence and experience was able to secure the lowest possible sentence for our son. He had priors and was also recently incarcerated which meant he was facing a very high sentence due to Arizona strict drug laws. We are so grateful to her. because of her actions our son will avoid a long prison term thereby allowing him to be a productive member of society be a productive member of society again and avoid a long prison term.

Holiday Inn Club Vacations Orlando – Orange Lake Resort

    Holiday Inn Orlando-International Airport

It was a great hotel, right off I4 and in the mix of all the stuff we wanted to do in Orange City and Deltona. The Staff was wonderful and they even had beer at the front desk. [Less]

I must say I was surprised by the quality and comfort of my stay. When the wedding block was announced that it would be at the Holiday Inn EXPRESS I wasn’t sure I would like the space. I was wrong. [More] Holiday Inn Express has upped its game. The front desk staff was super nice and Tim the manager was awesome. The weekend food staff was super friendly and helpful. She seemed like she really enjoyed working there. The weekday kitchen person however was not so pleasant. She seemed like she hated her job and barely came out to check that things were going well. She let the drink drip tray get full and had an attitude when people would ask her questions. Other than experiencing her the rest of the staff was AWESOME. [Less]

    Excellent Property-Friendly Staff-Clean

Great place for family or business. Some rooms are smaller but have ALL the amentities you could have in a room: fridge, microwave, Keurig. Very clean. Nicest place you can stay for several miles [More] in the Orange City area. Very close to shopping, interstates, easy to get around. Staff amazing friendly, willing to cater to any need and care about your stay and very welcoming. Great place. wouldn’t stay anywhere else in the area. Great value for price. [Less]

Nice resort, with a lot to do.

Asked to be moved to a specific area but could only stay in the registration building unless upgrading to a 2 bedroom, there were only 2 of us. Would be a great place to stay if you didn’t have any [More] other plans. Lots to do on the property. [Less]

    Recommend this Resort

    By Debra & Edmund

Went with Family and we all love it and had such a great time and would come back again. Relaxing place to be, I recommend this Resort. [Less]

Overall nice place except the staff

The rooms were nice, clean and had everything needed. Bring you own ice though, the ice makers are not turned on prior to your arrival so you have to wait several hours until ice is made. the only [More] other option is buying your own ice bucket or other container and getting ice from the reception building. When I tried to get help the staff could not be bothered to even give me a trash bag or help me hold and press button at same time to fill. Another guest helped me after the staff not only refused but was rude about it. [Less]

Exactly what we were looking for

    – Friendly staff – Good room – Comfortable bed – Air conditioning worked well – Everything met our needs [Less]

Stayed overnight at the Orlando Airport Holiday Inn. Room was comfortable and property was perfectly located for quick trip to the airport. Drinks and Dinner at the Bar/Lounge were fantastic. [More] Bartender/server Zee went out of his way to make us feel like valued guests. [Less]

Best Value! Convenient, clean and friendly staff!

I would definitely recommend this hotel for the quality service and convenience. Staff were also attentive to my needs and prompt when requests or assistance were made. Can’t beat the breakfast [More] “included” option, as you are seated in a buffet with quality food and beverage. The pool area was clean and relaxing. Hot tub wasn’t working, but for what we paid and the peacefulness experienced, that didn’t matter to me. Thank you Holiday Inn. See you soon! [Less]

Lesson 1: Introduction to MS Excel 2016

Excel can be used for a wide variety of purposes such as creating an address book, grocery lists, tracking expenses, creating invoices and bills, accounting, balance checkbooks and other financial accounts, as well as any other purpose that requires a spreadsheet or table.

  • Lesson 2: Navigating Excel 2016

In this lesson, we’re going to focus on the major elements of Excel 2016 and take a few minutes to become familiar with their purpose.

  • Lesson 3: Worksheets and Workbooks

Worksheets are stored in workbooks, and workbooks are the files that you actually save.

  • Lesson 4: Entering Information into MS Excel 2016

Starting to enter information is as simple as clicking on a cell in the spreadsheet and typing, but there are some things that are helpful to know – and that you can do – before you ever type that first letter or number.

  • Lesson 5: Introduction to Working with Cells, Rows, and Columns

If you want to move data from its original location and relocate it somewhere else, you must cut the data, then paste it somewhere else. You can cut or copy cells, rows, columns, or entire worksheets.

  • Lesson 6: Formatting Data and Cells

Taking the time to format a worksheet can take it from the black and white page of data and gridlines to something that looks professional and attractive.

  • Lesson 7: Formatting Rows and Columns

In Excel 2016, the width of a column is determined by how many characters that can be displayed within a cell.

  • Lesson 8: Editing Cells, Rows, Columns, and Worksheets

Excel 2016 makes creating – and editing – spreadsheets a lot easier because correcting errors is easy mess free.

  • Lesson 9: Introduction to Formulas and Calculations

If you use spreadsheets to do accounting for a business, track totals, invoice customers, or anything that requires mathematics, Excel’s ability to calculate formulas is going to save you errors and headaches.

  • Lesson 10: Working with Formulas and Functions

In Excel, a function is a predesigned formula that does a certain calculation. This can make it easier because you don’t have to construct every formula yourself.

  • Lesson 11: Maintaining Worksheets

It’s important to learn how to maintain your worksheets to help you keep on top of all the information.

  • Lesson 12: The What-If Analysis

A what-if analysis lets you explore possibilities by entering possible values into the same equation so you can see the possible outcomes in the cells of your spreadsheet.

  • Lesson 13: Adding Images and Graphics

You’ve already learned how to format a worksheet and enter information into Excel. Now we’re going to show you how to add elements such as graphics and images.

  • Lesson 14: Charts and Diagrams

Charts and diagrams are tools you can use to visually represent the data in a worksheet.

  • Lesson 15: Creating Data Lists

A data list or a database table are types of worksheets that aren’t used to calculate values, but to store information, such as names and addresses of clients or perhaps a library of books.

  • Lesson 16: Managing Data

A form is simply a dialog box that lets you display or enter information one record (or row) at a time. It can also make the information more visually appealing and easier to understand.

  • Lesson 17: Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts

A pivot table sounds more difficult and confusing than it really is. Most people say they don’t like pivot tables, or they don’t understand them. In truth, they’re not that difficult at all.

  • Lesson 18: Printing Worksheets and Workbooks

Headers appear at the top of a worksheet. Footers appear at the bottom. Both can contain page numbers, and headers often contain the title of the worksheet and perhaps the date.

  • Lesson 19: Templates

Templates are worksheets that are already designed for you.

  • Lesson 20: Protecting, Saving, and Sharing Workbooks

Add protection to worksheets so that they can’t be edited by other people. You can lock cells or an entire worksheet.

The 7 Cheapest New Cars in the United States

The seven cheapest new cars on sale in the United States all come in under $15,000. Although the phrase “you get what you pay for” seems to be a universal constant, there are a few options listed here that will help you get the most for your money. All prices quoted include destination charges.

To keep outlay as low as possible, knowing how to drive a stick shift is an advantage, since automatic transmissions are usually options instead of standard equipment. A manual transmission will affect resale value, however, so a decision has to be made whether to take that financial hit up front or down the road.

    2014 Nissan Versa 1.6 S ($12,800; 27 miles per gallon in the city/36 mpg highway/30 mpg combined)

This is officially the cheapest new car on sale in the United States, a title it’s held for a couple of years. Unexpectedly roomy for a subcompact sedan — and although no one benchmarks a Versa for driving dynamics, it doesn’t feel like a penance to drive. Air conditioning is standard, along with a CD player. A 1.6-liter engine making a tepid 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque is linked to a 5-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels. and that’s pretty much it.

If you require an automatic transmission (a continuously variable automatic transmission, or CVT. is available), or Bluetooth, iPod integration, alloy wheels, a rearview camera, navigation or even one of those little mirrors in the front passenger’s sun visor, then you’ll have to look to one of the higher (and therefore more expensive) trim levels. The thing is, that lifts the budget into an area where you could buy something more peppy and fun, such as the 2014 Ford Fiesta S.

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note is the hatchback version, bringing 5-door practicality to that relatively large interior space. It costs $2,000 more, though.

    2014 Chevrolet Spark LS ($12,995; 31 mpg city/39 mpg hwy/34 mpg combined)

Giving the name Spark to something with only 84 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque from a 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine seems a tad optimistic. But where this subcompact 4-door (or five, including the hatchback) wins friends is with pleasing designs inside and out.

As well as air conditioning, the Spark LS comes with power windows, alloy wheels, hill-hold assist and an impressive complement of 10 airbags. It’s another 5-speed manual transmission; CVT is an option. Now’s as good a time as any to mention continuously variable transmissions — without getting too technical, they’re basically one gear. They can be slow to respond and noisy. But that does make them cheaper than auto transmissions containing several ratios.

Back to the Spark: It’s a car with decent interior space that stretches out as far as its headroom. Folding down the rear seats means removing the headrests, which is inconvenient, but that’s a minor gripe for what is generally a good buy.

    2014 Mitsubishi Mirage DE ($13,790; 34 mpg city/42 mpg hwy/37 mpg combined)

This is an all-new model for 2014, in the United States at least. It seems the main reason why this 5-door subcompact hatch is so cheap is because the company didn’t spend any money making it decent to drive. Or including much sound insulation.

It’s also one of the lightest cars on sale in North America: 1,973 pounds. The engine is certainly lighter by a cylinder. Yep, this one has three, straining out a wheezy 74 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque from 1.2 liters of displacement.

Scrimping on cylinders and weight does have a great effect on fuel economy, though, returning the most impressive figures of this group. With the optional CVT, those numbers improve to 37 miles per gallon in the city, 44 mpg on the highway and 40 mpg combined. Yet somehow Mitsubishi still manages to include power windows, mirrors and locks, a 4-speaker stereo system and even an airbag for the driver’s knees. That said, it’s hard to get excited about.

    2014 smart fortwo pure ($14,020; 34 mpg city/38 mpg hwy/36 mpg combined)

A successor is expected soon, because this sub-subcompact 2-seater is getting on in years. Space for the couple of passengers is fairly generous, and the trunk area can take just enough luggage for a pair’s weekend away.

This was a good idea for European cities where streets are narrow and parking spaces are few. Things don’t quite work that way in the U.S. Instead, the American smart driver will have to contend with crosswinds gusting off the prairie and a shunt-with-every-shift mechanized semi-manual transmission, neither of which makes the car an attractive proposition. The short wheelbase also makes speed humps irksome.

Most cars have crumple zones, areas of the body that absorb energy in a collision. The diminutive smart doesn’t have room for such things, but it still performs well in crash tests thanks to a safety cell that surrounds its occupants. And eight airbags in a 2-seater is good.

Tipping the scales at a feathery 1,808 pounds means the tiny 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine doesn’t feel inadequate when it buzzes out just 70 hp and 68 lb-ft of torque. Air conditioning comes as standard for 2014, joining power locks.

    2014 Kia Rio LX ($14,700; 28 mpg city/36 mpg hwy/31 mpg combined)

As prices rise, the cars become more desirable. The Rio subcompact sedan doesn’t compromise with weak engines or limited seating. It actually packs something of a punch: 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque from a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder unit. This goes to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Rio looks vaguely sophisticated and comes with air conditioning, heated power door mirrors, a CD player and an iPod socket. Power windows, however, are part of an option package. Landing a hatchback version only means parting with another $100.

Downsides include a noisy cabin, a disappointing driving experience and Kia’s seats don’t always provide the desired amount of support. So if you’re on a test drive, pay attention to your posterior.

    2014 Ford Fiesta S ($14,925; 27 mpg city/38 mpg hwy/31 mpg combined)

At last, something for the enthusiast. This subcompact sedan feels confident through the curves as well as comfortable on the stretches. A 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder engine delivers 120 hp and 112 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission.

The cabin is an agreeable place to be, with decent materials and build quality. Standard equipment includes power locks, air conditioning, hill-start assistance, an airbag for the driver’s knees and clever side mirrors that include a convex section to eliminate blind spots. The Fiesta is also rare in its class by offering tilt-telescopic steering wheel adjustment and a 6-speaker audio system.

    2014 Chevrolet Sonic LS ($14,995; 26 mpg city/35 mpg hwy/30 mpg combined)

Just squeaking onto a list of cheapest new cars by costing five bucks short of $15k, the Sonic comes with blind-spot-mitigating mirrors, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, hill-start assistance, Bluetooth, air conditioning and keyless entry. Both front occupants get knee airbags as part of the 10 found within the Sonic’s relatively commodious cabin.

Less-than-stellar fuel figures have a silver lining: an energetic 138 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque from a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine. Like the Fiesta, the standard transmission is a 5-speed manual. Though the Fiesta is the driver’s choice, the Sonic still feels composed.

For those wanting to buy domestic, the Sonic is the only one of the bunch to be made in the States.

    Termination Guidelines, by Jeffrey Barnett, Psy #termination, #psychotherapy, #counseling, #abrupt, #treatment #plan,

    #

    Termination Guidelines

  • Clarify expectations and obligations from the outset. The Office Policies are the best way to articulate and discuss such expectations and obligations. (Zur Institute’s Clinical Forms .)
  • Be familiar with the relevant guidelines and standards in your professions’ Codes of Ethics with regards to termination and abandonment issues. Summary of the different Codes of Ethics on Termination Psychotherapy and Counseling
  • Some terminations are short and swift, while others may be long and protracted. Then termination can have different meanings and be just an end of a phase in intermittent-long-term therapy. The form and type of termination depends on the client, setting of therapy, therapeutic orientation, quality and type of therapist-client relationship and the therapist.
  • If necessary, review with patients their insurance coverage, limits to managed care contracts, and how utilization review may impact on termination. Set up arrangements for addressing patient treatment needs if continued authorization is denied.
  • Make adequate arrangements for coverage during any periods of planned or unplanned absences.
  • Provide patients with referrals to other treatment sources, if needed, and work to assist them in their transition to other health care providers.
  • Be cautious in regard to termination of patients who are in crisis. Try to avoid terminating clients who are in acute or temporary crisis due to payment issues.
  • The average number of visits among U.S. patients receiving psychotherapy in 2007 was 8 sessions, according to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
  • 41 percent of patients in the U.S. quit psychotherapy “prematurely,” according to a 2010 study in the journal Psychotherapy Theory, Research, Practice, Training.
  • Many clients unilaterally decide to drop out of therapy. They may do that with a phone message or by simply not showing up to their next scheduled appointment. You must remember that it is the client’s prerogative and choice whether to continue in therapy or not. Except in extreme situations, such as when the client poses a danger to self or others, you need to respect their choice. Do not tacitly condone patients dropping out of treatment when your clinical judgment indicates continued care is needed. When clinically and otherwise appropriate, notify the patient of your assessment and recommendations. There is no ethical, clinical or legal mandate to send a registered letter to client. Different clients and situations may require different actions and, at times, lack of action.
  • The question of whether therapists need to send a letter to clients who unilaterally dropped out (i.e. pre-mature termination) was recently addressed by Davis & Younggren in a 2009 PPRP article, where they clearly stated “In ordinary circumstances, however, letters are typically unnecessary and potentially counterproductive to the natural dissolution of the relationship (Davis, 2008). For instance, the client might feel embarrassed or scolded for his or her oblique termination and be less inclined to return. The client might perceive the psychotherapist’s actions as controlling and unnecessarily intrusive. It might seem that the psychotherapist is trying to break up with the client or get rid of him or her with such a formal action. Routine letters of closure not only present an unrealistic administrative burden on the provider, they add to the risk of negative client reactions.” (p. 575)
  • It is not unusual for therapy to break down rather than go through a smooth, clear or distinct termination process with patients with personality disorders (i.e. BPD) or those who were diagnosed with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or Bi-Polar disorders. Termination with these clients can be very abrupt or very long, painful, confusing and tumultuous. Obviously, each case should be handled according to the specific context of therapy. The context of therapy includes client, setting, therapy and therapist factors.
  • You can terminate treatment with clients (or another person with whom the client has a relationship) who threaten or stalk you, your family member or your employees via phone, email, online, in-person or other means. You can also terminate treatment with clients who intrude into your private life via the Internet or in “real” life. You are allowed to protect your privacy and secure your own, your family members’ and employee’s sense of privacy and safety. (Document, document and document.)
  • You must terminate therapy when it becomes reasonably clear that the patient no longer needs the service, is not likely to benefit, or is being harmed by continued service. For those patients who have ongoing treatment needs, when appropriate, one should offer to provide them with assistance with referrals to other appropriately trained and accessible professionals (except when we are being threatened, assaulted, stalked, or other relevant situations).
  • Document discussions of termination issues, agreements reached, decisions made and their rationale, and, when relevant, document the recommendations and follow-ups. Purchase a Termination Summary form
  • Termination of treatment is not always a permanent ending of the professional relationship. Termination is often not relevant during, or an end of phase in, intermittent-long-term psychotherapy. These forms of therapy may continue throughout the life span of individuals and families.
  • Termination is a phase of each patient’s treatment. If possible and appropriate, plan for it, prepare for it, process it. Additionally, each clinician should consider termination in light of their theoretical orientation and treatment approach, each patient’s/client’s diagnosis and treatment needs, and any relevant diversity factors that might impact the process.

Term life insurance: Protection for your big plans. (And for your littlest ones.)

Term life insurance is the simplest way to protect loved ones now—and lock in your lowest available rates for a set period of time. As long as you keep your policy active for a set “term” (like 10, 15, or 20 years), it can replace your lost income, tax-free, in the event of your death. Plus, you can add more coverage or upgrade to a permanent policy later.*

    Yearly Convertible Term

If you’re on a tight budget or unsure what protection you need, starting with a term policy can make sense. Later on, you can renew or upgrade.

    Level Premium Convertible Term

If consistency appeals, take comfort with a guaranteed rate that won’t go up until your term runs out (or you convert to whole life coverage).

Our wide range of riders, some at additional cost, offer extra benefits to help you meet your short- and long-term goals.

You look out for loved ones every day. Term life insurance helps protect their futures, too.

It goes without saying that you could never be replaced, but with life insurance, your loved ones wouldn’t be burdened with the financial pressure that would come with your loss. Here’s why: the proceeds of life insurance can be used to help preserve your beneficiaries’ standard of living and fulfill future goals, and generally come free from federal income tax.

HOW DOES TERM LIFE INSURANCE WORK?

Term life policies often start you at a lower premium for a set period of time. You choose the length of time you’d like to carry the policy, and at the end of the term, you typically have the option to easily renew or upgrade to a permanent policy.

In this way, purchasing term life when you’re young can lock in your access to affordable life insurance for the term period—even if your health status changes. You can convert your coverage to more rewarding permanent policies, like whole life insurance. possibly at a lower price than if you’d put off purchasing until you’re older.

Could a term policy be right for you?

Term can be the perfect solution for those balancing high expenses with a high need for protection, for example, when you’re starting a family. Ultimately, term life is a cost-conscious solution to get the most protection you can now, while still providing you with an opportunity to convert to a permanent policy later on.

Finally, term insurance is a great option for people who need:

    • Coverage for a well-defined period of time
    • Business protection (in the event you’d lose a key employee or business partner)
    • Extra coverage on top of other, permanent life insurance

    #

What are Marriage and Family Counselors?

Marriage and family counselors help people work through problems and rebuild relationships. Sometimes couples seek them because they’re trying to avoid divorce. Sometimes families need help working through a crisis or stressful time: a death in the family, an illness, a lay off. Sometimes there’s substance abuse involved. Marriage and family therapists help individuals express needs appropriately, make compromises, and establish boundaries. They also make assessments as needed to assure that individuals and family units receive appropriate services.

Interested in the field? There’s a need for qualified professionals! The marriage and family therapy field should grow an impressive 41% between 2010 to 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More people are expected to seek treatment, and marriage and family therapists (along with counselors) will often be favored over psychologists and psychiatrists for cost reasons.

The most career growth will be in practitioner’s offices; there will also be a significant increase in marriage and family therapists employed with individual and family services, residential care, and mental health and substance abuse centers. The mean wage is $48,710, but salaries vary quite a bit by work setting.

Becoming a Marital and Family Therapist

To work as a marriage and family therapist, you will need to complete a master’s degree. Your program may be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Some programs hold duel accreditation. Whether the program is called marriage and family therapy or marriage and family counseling isn’t necessarily significant; titles reflect the school where the program is housed and the agency doing the accrediting. What is important is that the program meets the specific requirements of your state board. The title you later use will depend on the statutes of your state.

Capella University offers three online CACREP – accredited master’s programs: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy and School Counseling as well as a COAMFTE – accredited master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy. Click here to contact Capella University and request information about their programs.

The marriage and family therapy field is predicted to grow 41% between 2010 to 2020.

Programs are competitive and will consider various indicators of academic and professional success: grades, experience, references, and personal statement. It can be an advantage to have an undergraduate degree in a field related to human services or family studies. However, it’s not usually a requirement. If your degree is not in a related field, you may need to take a few prerequisites prior to entering a master’s program. Learn about undergraduate psychology degrees and undergraduate human services degrees and how they can help prepare you for a marriage and family therapy graduate education path.

Your program will give you a solid background in concepts like marriage and family systems, psychopathology, therapy techniques, and professional ethics. You may be able to specialize in a treatment area like addictions. Your program will also include an internship. You will conduct therapy with real patients under supervision. You can expect to put in about 500 direct service hours before you graduate; the number will vary somewhat from program to program.

    Licensing and Certification

After you have fulfilled your educational requirements, you will need to take a licensing exam. In most states, this is the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy. It is administered by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards, but you will need to go through your own state board to get permission to test. The exam includes questions in five domains. You should be aware that California has its own licensing exam.

You will need to work under supervision for about two years after graduation. Generally, this means that a mental health professional reviews your therapy practice and meets with you regularly to offer feedback and support. Your state board will provide guidelines about what constitutes an appropriate supervisor and how your experience and supervision should be documented.

When you have met all requirements, you will be licensed. At this point, you can opt to work in virtually any setting, including private practice. In most states, you will be called a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or LMFT. Some states have other titles like Licensed Marital and Family Therapist or Licensed Independent Marriage and Family Therapist.

DNA tests prove suspected wolf hybrid Capone is just a dog

AURORA, Colo. — The family fighting to get their pet back from Aurora Animal Control says DNA tests prove their dog is not a wolf hybrid.

“We got some good news last night,” Tracy Abbato said Sunday. “Capone is not wolf at all. He doesn’t have an ounce of wolf in him.”

The FOX31 Problem Solvers were first to report the case, which has made headlines around the world.

The Abbato family adopted Capone from the Adams County Animal Shelter 10 years ago. Shelter officials had classified him as a German shepherd mix. The family’s veterinarian said the same thing.

But when Capone escaped from the Abbato family’s yard in February, Aurora Animal Control picked him up and officials classified him as part wolf based on his mannerisms, behavior and physical characteristics.

Officials refused to return Capone to his family until DNA tests could prove whether he is a wolf hybrid. Capone has been held at the shelter for almost five weeks.

On top of that, Abbato faces violations of animal running at large, keeping an aggressive animal and keeping an exotic/wild animal.

The family is fighting the case, but when they went to court last week, the hearing was delayed until Wednesday.

Now, Abbato says the DNA test results prove what she knew all along.

“I want everyone to know he is not a wolf at all,” Abbato said. “We all knew it from the start.”

Even so, Abbato will have to wait a few more days to bring Capone back home.

“Because of pending litigation, we have to wait for the judge to make the decision,” Abbato said.

That decision could come at the hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

“Poor guy. I don’t know what he was going through in there, but I’m sure he’ll be so excited to come home and see us and his furry brothers,” Abbato said. “I just want him to come home now. It’s time for him to come home.”

Abbato said the battle has been emotionally draining, but she’s been receiving encouragement from dog lovers around the country and around the world.

“It’s heartbreaking because he does not understand what is going on,” she said. “If he knew, he would know he has hundreds of thousands of people supporting and fighting for him to get home.”

Abbato said she was stunned by how many people reached out to support her family.

“I knew people loved dogs, but I didn’t know this many people love dogs,” she said. “It’s amazing. Look at our petition and GoFundMe. There so many more dog lovers out there than I thought.”

More than 21,000 people had signed the Change.org petition as of Sunday afternoon.

    2. Get adequate rest. Some chores might not get done or there may be someone who would help if you let them know how. Can someone else shop for groceries or sweep up? Realize you can’t do everything, so let others help.
    3. Get outside for a few minutes every day. Twenty minutes in the fresh air will do wonders for your mood. You will return to your loved one refreshed.
    4. Speak honestly about how you are feeling. Good or bad, it helps to let another person know what you are thinking and feeling. Choose a person who makes you feel safe. Support is what you need right now.
    5. Find some type of recreation. If you have a hobby, try to do it at least twice a week. See a movie. Bowl. Golf. Do something different each week.
    6. Sometimes you need a break. There may be times when caring for your loved one is too overwhelming. Ask your Crossroads team about respite care for your loved one.

At age 10, Jayza Duhon saw her grandfather Lee A. Ford every day. She and her parents lived with Ford and his wife Violet in their Auburn home and Jayza – their only grandchild – spent hours with him.

“She and my dad were very, very close,” recalled Jayza’s mother, D’Juna Duhon. “She would say, ‘Grandpa, I want to go to the store.’ She had $2 and got $30 worth of stuff and he paid for it. When things were frustrating her, she knew she could go to grandpa and it would be OK. In her world, he could make anything OK and better.”

Then, completely unexpectedly on the day before Father’s Day in 2009, Ford died of endocarditis – an infection that attacked the inner lining of his heart. Jayza was devastated.

Duhon, fearing for her daughter’s well-being and seeking help, turned to Providence Hospice of Seattle for children’s grief counseling. It’s a free service available to anyone in King County who is dealing with the death of a loved one. It’s the only program that provides both individual and group support to children and teens.

“Our staff is honored to be given the opportunity to provide this level of grief support to kids and teens in our community,” said Beverly Goldsmith, grief counselor with Providence Hospice of Seattle. “We hope many more will be open to using our services in the future.”

On Thursday, Jayza and D’Juna will be featured in the fundraising video at Providence Hospice of Seattle’s Pediatric Luncheon, which will raise money to support children’s hospice and grief support services.

Duhon recalls the hospice counselor who came to the family’s home to work with Jayza and give her the tools she needed to work through her grief.

“I didn’t want to fall in with that, ‘oh, yeah, they’re just kids, they’re resilient, they’ll bounce back, they’ll be OK.’ I wanted to make sure she had age-appropriate support,” Duhon said.

Jayza also attended group counseling at Providence Hospice of Seattle’s offices in Seattle and attended Camp Erin-King County, a free weekend summer camp in Carnation for children and teens who have experienced the death of a loved one. Now, six years later, Jayza is a successful junior at Auburn Mountainview High School who is looking forward to attending college with hopes of becoming a doctor.

“She said the loss of her grandfather completely changed the direction in her life,” Duhon said.

Even though Jayza is a well-adjusted teen, she still turns to Providence Hospice of Seattle for support, said Duhon, who like her father did for 36 years, works at Boeing.

“About two years ago she came to me and asked if she could go back to Camp Erin. She came back as a teen. Part of it is being able to verbalize those emotions. It still hurts her. Through Providence Hospice and Camp Erin, it has really helped her be able to express how she feels about that loss.” Now Jayza wants to go back to Camp Erin as a volunteer.

Duhon herself had much to deal with after her father died. The family had bought a new home, she had to comfort her mother, who was widowed after a 56-year marriage, and her husband William was diagnosed with prostate cancer. She turned to Providence Hospice as well.

“They were a very good support system for me as a parent. They taught me how to not overstress things. It was very helpful.”

3 Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Hospice Patients – Family – Caregivers Blog

    #gifts for hospice patients

Posted on Sunday November 29, 2015 in Caregiving Tips

When a loved one is on hospice, the greatest gift you can give them is your time. Sit with them as you play their favorite music, read to them or share memories. No gift you give is more valuable than this time together.

For many, though, gift giving is an additional way to show your love around the holidays and special times like birthdays and Mother’s Day. When someone’s on hospice care, traditional gifts like gift cards and new clothing aren’t usually helpful. The transition to celebrating the holidays with a loved one on hospice can be difficult to adapt to, so here are three ideas for practical and thoughtful gifts for someone receiving hospice care. Also be sure to check out our previous article featuring 5 gifts for the terminally ill .

    Gift Ideas for Hospice Patients

    1. Hot Water Bottle Cover

Hot water bottles are wonderful for giving a hospice patient extra warmth. But, let’s face it: They’re not very attractive. Change that for your loved one with the gift a handmade hot water bottle cover. Etsy has handmade covers in a variety of styles, from cozy crochet to sincere messages and cute animals. Find one that suits your loved one’s personal style and it will give them a smile this winter.

    2. Digital Frame

Surround your loved one with beautiful memories of the people they loved by collecting the images on a digital frame. Photos of grandchildren, treasured vacation memories and special moments can be gathered together and added to the digital frame using an SD Card or flash drive. Even when a hospice patient is too tired to read, they can still enjoy the gift of seeing the faces of the people who love them. Digital frames are available in a variety of sizes and prices to suit any budget or space.

    3. Messages of Love

Take the idea of memories a step further by setting up an account with Life On Record. Here’s how it works: Relatives and friends call a special toll-free number and share memories and well wishes, letting your loved one know how much they are appreciated and how many lives they have affected. The callers can speak for up to 30 minutes and all the messages can be transferred to a CD or self-playing speaker. The CD will not only be a beautiful gift for your loved one; it will also become a treasured family keepsake for years to come.

Meet the Reno, NV Family Law A+ Team

At the Law Office of Marilyn D. York, our special areas of expertise are getting the best possible divorce settlement for our clients and protecting them before, during and after the divorce. In that, we are the assiduous (hence A+ ) team. Legal teams that claim they will aggresively represent you or will fight for you sound one dimensional. We are assiduous: hard-working, attentive, diligent, tenacious, industrious, scrupulous, studious, unflagging, untiring, zealous and yes we will also aggressively fight for you where your case needs it but we are so much more than that.

We protect all of our clients’ rights on issues likely to arise in a divorce case, including:
    Equal custody More visitation
    Paternity testing Asset protection
    Preventing move-aways Opposing restraining orders
Terminating parental rights Fair child/spousal support
All other issues of family law

Our practice is focused on securing men s rights. Even though most Nevada laws, as written, do not discriminate against men, courts often seem to favor women in their decisions. This bias is common in family courts around the globe, and is rooted in human history. It usually takes great effort by a legal counsel to secure fair rights for fathers to be able to maintain a constant and vital presence in their children s lives.

We at the Law Office of Marilyn D. York know how truly important it is for children to grow up with both parents raising them, even if the family has been fractured by a parental split. That s why we fight so hard for our clients. The greatest beneficiaries of a just court settlement are not only the fathers we represent, but their children.

Protecting the children is my main concern and cases where I can
improve a child s life are always my highest priority.

    What Is Health Economics?

Health Economics is an applied field of study that allows for the systematic and rigorous examination of the problems faced in promoting health for all. By applying economic theories of consumer, producer and social choice, health economics aims to understand the behavior of individuals, health care providers, public and private organizations, and governments in decision-making.

From economic modeling to policy analysis, I am confident that the skills I have gained throughout the year will stay with me throughout my life. I am beyond lucky to have been at this incredible school alongside inspiring classmates, learning from professors who are true experts in this field. The MHS in Health Economics here at Hopkins is by far the best thing I could have done to start my career.

    Analyst, Healthcare Value Analytics

    McKinsey Company

    The MHS in Health Economics
    Program at Hopkins

Health economics is used to promote health through the study of health care providers, hospitals and clinics, managed care and public health promotion activities. Health economists apply the theories of production, efficiency, disparities, competition, and regulation to better inform the public and private sector on the most efficient, or cost-effective, and equitable course of action. Such research can include the economic evaluation of new technologies, as well as the study of appropriate prices, anti-trust policy, optimal public and private investment, and strategic behavior.

Health economics can also be used to evaluate how certain social problems, such as market failure and inequitable allocation of resources, can impact on the health of a community or population. Health economics can then be used to directly inform government on the best course of action with regards to regulation, national health packages, defining health insurance packages and other national health programs.

Faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School are currently conducting research on a wide variety of topics including the impact of health care, health insurance and preventative services on health lifestyles as well as providing research and advice to governments around the globe to enable a more effective and equitable allocation of resources. Further information on faculty retreat can be found on individual faculty research pages.

    Marie Curie Biography

The Polish-born French physicist Marie Curie invented the term radioactivity and discovered two elements, radium and polonium. Curie was not only the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, but when she won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, she became the first person ever to win the Nobel Prize twice.

    Early life

Marie Sklodowska Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867, the youngest of five children of Wladislaw and Bronislava Boguska Sklodowska. After her father lost his job, the family struggled and was forced to take borders (renters) into their small apartment. Religious as a child, Curie rejected her faith after her sister died of typhus (a severe fever) in 1876. Two years later she lost her mother to tuberculosis, a terrible disease that attacks the lungs and bones.

Marie was a brilliant student, gaining a gold medal upon completing her secondary education in 1883. As girls could not attend universities in Russian-dominated Poland, Marie spent a year in the country with friends at her father s suggestion. Upon returning to her father s house in Warsaw the next summer, she began to earn her living through private tutoring. She also became associated with the Floating University, a group of young men and women who tried to quench their thirst for knowledge in secret sessions.

In early 1886 Marie accepted a job as governess (private educator) with a family living in Szczuki, Poland, but the intellectual loneliness she experienced there only solidified her determination to somehow achieve her dream of becoming a university student. One of her sisters, Bronya, was already in Paris, France, successfully passing the examinations in medicine. In September 1891 Marie moved in with her sister in Paris.

    Work in Paris

When classes began at the Sorbonne in Paris in early November 1891, Marie enrolled as a student of physics. By 1894 she was desperately looking for a laboratory where she could work on her research project, the measurement of the magnetic properties of various steel alloys (metal mixtures). Acting upon a suggestion, she visited Pierre Curie at the School of Physics and Chemistry at the University of Paris. In 1895 Pierre and Marie were married, thus beginning a most extraordinary partnership in scientific work.

By mid-1897 Curie s scientific achievements were two university degrees, a fellowship (a scholarship), and a monograph (published paper) on the magnetization of tempered steel. The couple s first daughter, Ir ne, had just been born, and it was then that the Curies turned their attention to the mysterious radiation from uranium recently discovered by Antoine Henri Becquerel (1852 1908). It was Marie s hunch that the radiation was an atomic property, and therefore had to be present in some other elements as well. Her search soon established the fact of a similar radiation from thorium, and she invented the historic word radioactivity (the spontaneous release of radium).

While searching for other sources of radioactivity, the Curies had turned their attention to pitchblende, a mineral well known for its uranium content. To their immense surprise the radioactivity of pitchblende far exceeded the combined radioactivity of the uranium and thorium contained in it. From their laboratory two papers reached the Academy of Sciences within six months. The first, read at the meeting of July 18, 1898, announced the discovery of a new radioactive element, which the Curies named polonium after Marie s native country. The other paper, announcing the discovery of radium, was read at the December 26 meeting.

From 1898 to 1902 the Curies converted several tons of pitchblende, but it was not only the extremely precious centigrams of radium that rewarded their superhuman efforts. The Curies also published, jointly or separately, during those years a total of thirty-two scientific papers. Among them, one announced that diseased, tumor-forming cells were destroyed faster than healthy cells when exposed to radium.

    Recognition

In November 1903 the Royal Society of London gave the Curies one of its highest awards, the Davy Medal. A month later followed the announcement from the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden, that three French scientists, A. H. Becquerel and the Curies, were the joint recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1903. Finally, even

    Library of Congress

the academics in Paris began to stir, and a few months later Marie was appointed director of research at the University of Paris.

In December 1904 their second daughter, ve, was born. The next year brought the election of Pierre to the Academy of Sciences and their travel to Stockholm, where, on June 6, he delivered the Nobel Prize lecture, which was in fact their joint address. Pierre ended his speech with the double-edged impact on mankind of every major scientific advance. Pierre said that he believed mankind will derive more good than harm from the new discoveries.

    End of an era

The joyful time for this husband-and-wife team would not last long. On the rainy mid-afternoon of April 19, 1906, Pierre was run down by a heavy carriage and killed instantly. Two weeks later the widow was asked to take over her late husband s post. Honors began to pour in from scientific societies all over the world on a woman left alone with two small children and with whom the gigantic task of leadership in radioactivity research was now left. In 1908 she edited the collected works of her late husband, and in 1910 she published her massive Trait de radioactivit . Shortly after this work Curie received her second Nobel Prize, this time in chemistry. Still, Curie was unable to win over the Academy of Sciences, who once again denied her membership.

Curie devoted much of her time during World War I (1914 18) to equipping automobiles in her own laboratory, the Radium Institute, with x-ray (Roentgen) apparatus to assist the sick. It was these cars that became known in the war zone as little Curies. By the end of the war Curie was past her fiftieth year, with much of her physical energy already spent along with her savings, which she had patriotically invested in war bonds. But her dedication was inexhaustible. The year 1919 witnessed her installation at the Radium Institute, and two years later her book La Radiologie et la guerre was published. In it she gave a most informative account of the scientific and human experiences gained for radiology (the use of radiation) during the war. At the end of the war, her daughter Ir ne, a physicist, was appointed as an assistant in her mother s laboratory.

Shortly afterward, a momentous visit took place in the Radium Institute. The visitor was Mrs. William B. Meloney, editor of a leading magazine in New York and representative of the countless women who for years had found in Curie their ideal and inspiration. A year later Meloney returned to tell Curie that a nationwide subscription in America had produced the sum of one hundred thousand dollars, which was needed to purchase a gram of radium for her institute. She was also asked to visit the United States with her daughters and collect the precious gift in person. Her trip was an absolute triumph. In the White House, President Warren G. Harding (1865 1923) presented her with the golden key to the little metal box containing the radium.

    Later years

On questions other than scientific, Curie rarely uttered public comment of any length. One of the exceptions was her statement at a conference in 1933 on The Future of Culture. There she rallied to the defense of science, which several panelists held responsible for the dehumanization of modern life. I am among those, she emphasized, who think that science has great beauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician; he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale. We should not allow it to be believed that all scientific progress can be reduced to mechanism, machines, gearings, even though such machinery also has its own beauty.

The most heartwarming experience of the last phase of Curie s life was probably the marriage of her daughter Ir ne in 1926 to Fr d ric Joliot (later Joliot-Curie), the most gifted assistant at the Radium Institute. Before long it was evident to her that their union would closely resemble her own marvelously creative partnership with Pierre Curie.

She worked almost to the very end and succeeded in completing the manuscript of her last book, Radioactivit . In the last years her younger daughter, ve, was her great support. ve was also her mother s faithful companion when, on July 4, 1934, Curie died in Sancellemoz, France. Albert Einstein (1879 1955) once said, Marie Curie is, of all celebrated beings, the only one whom fame has not corrupted.

Florida Civil Statute of Limitations Laws

You got rear-ended on the Turnpike a couple of months ago and your neck still doesn’t feel right. Or maybe it’s a year after the accident and you’re just now realizing that the repair shop didn’t fix your car right the first time around. Can you sue the other driver or the repair shop for damages? And, if so, is there a deadline for filing either lawsuit? Every state has their own laws limiting the amount of time between when an injury occurs and when you can file a civil suit. Here is a brief summary of civil statute of limitation laws in Florida .

    Civil Statutes of Limitation

In every state, there are time limits for the filing of lawsuits and other civil actions called statutes of limitations. Florida’s civil statute of limitations laws are largely in line with those of other states. Depending on the type of case or procedure, Florida’s statutes of limitations range from two to four years. The point at which the clock starts ticking typically is the date of the incident or discovery of a wrong.

2015 Toyota Camry vs. 2015 Honda Accord: Which is Better?

If you’re looking for a midsize sedan, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are probably on your shopping list. Both are among the most popular midsize sedans on the market, offering notorious reliability, impressive levels of standard and optional equipment, and enough room for the whole family. Which one is better? We compared the 2015 Accord to the newly revised 2015 Toyota Camry to find out, but first, let’s take a look at what’s new with the two cars for the latest model year.

    2015 Toyota Camry

Although the Camry isn’t completely redesigned for 2015, it is much different. Changes include a thoroughly revised exterior, along with major updates to the car’s cabin, dashboard and interior materials. The Camry also adds some new safety gadgets, a high-tech thin-film-transistor display in the gauge cluster and a sporty new XSE trim level.

    2015 Honda Accord

Unlike its Camry rival, the Accord is almost completely unchanged for the 2015 model year since it was an all-new car for 2013.

    Reliability

As you might expect, comparing the reliability of the Camry and Accord is largely an exercise in futility — primarily because they’re both just so good. In J.D. Power’s ratings of predicted reliability, both the 2014 Accord and the 2014 Camry earn the same better-than-average score, and we have no reason to believe that the mechanically identical 2015 models won’t do just as well. In terms of warranty length, the Camry and Accord offer roughly the same term, though the Toyota also includes 2 years of standard free maintenance. In this situation, reliability is a tie, as it’s just too close to call. We suspect that shoppers who prioritize reliability will be happy with either model.

    Fuel Economy

Based on sales numbers, we think that most shoppers will likely opt for the standard 4-cylinder engine in the Accord and Camry. In the Toyota, that’s a 178-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that returns 25 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with its standard 6-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the Accord’s 185-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine returns 27 mpg city/36 mpg hwy when equipped with its optional continuously variable automatic transmission, so the Accord offers a slight advantage in terms of mpg for most shoppers.

Drivers who want a little more power can upgrade to optional V6 engines in both cars. In the Camry, that’s a 268-hp 3.5-liter V6 that returns 21 mpg city/31 mpg hwy, while the Accord’s optional 278-hp 3.5-liter V6 puts out 21 mpg city/34 mpg hwy. Therefore, the Accord holds the advantage once again.

Finally, shoppers who are especially interested in fuel economy can opt for a hybrid version of either the Camry or the Accord. Once again, the Accord offers better gas mileage, returning 50 mpg city/45 mpg hwy, while the Camry tops out at 43 mpg city/39 mpg hwy. Given its advantage in 4-cylinder, hybrid and V6 configurations, the Accord has the leg up on the Camry in terms of gas mileage.

    Safety

Although the revised 2015 Camry has not yet been crash-tested, Toyota is expecting good ratings. We expect the same, given that the outgoing Camry earned a perfect 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the two vehicles are largely the same under the skin. Likewise, the Accord also received a perfect overall score from NHTSA, suggesting that the two cars don’t differ too much when it comes to crashworthiness.

As far as safety features go, the 2014 Accord had a leg up over its Camry rival, but for 2015, Toyota has updated the Camry to offer a wide range of new safety gadgets. There is, for example, an available pre-collision system, along with lane-departure warning and available adaptive cruise control. And while the Toyota still doesn’t offer Honda’s excellent LaneWatch blind spot monitoring system, its safety equipment is otherwise identical. As a result, the Camry and Accord are on a level playing field in terms of both safety features and crash-test results. Once again, this category is too close to pick a clear winner.

    Technology

Interestingly, technology is also a close race between the Camry and the Accord. While last year’s Accord was a step above the Camry, the latest Camry evens things out a bit. Adaptive cruise control is now available, for instance, as it is in the Accord, and the Camry also adds an impressive lane-departure alert system and pre-collision warning technology. In addition, the Camry comes with a standard backup camera, much like the Accord.

Perhaps the Accord’s only advantages are its dual-screen center stack and its available LaneWatch blind spot monitoring system, though the former is more of a matter of personal preference than a high-tech benefit. As a result, we once again have to say that this category is a little too close to call, especially when you consider the wider range of functions available with Toyota’s Entune infotainment system.

    Value

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve probably discovered that the Camry and Accord are very similar — whether you’re talking about engine power, technology, reliability or safety. As you might expect, they’re also priced about the same, and that makes neither model a standout when it comes to value. In the end, assigning a victor in this category is very hard, but we’ll hand it to the Accord, as we prefer its simple, option-free trim levels and its better fuel economy. Still, the Camry’s reasonable pricing and all-around excellent traits make it difficult to dislike, even though it has not historically been one of our favorites.

    AutoTrader’s Advice

It’s hard to imagine a comparison test where the cars under consideration are more similar than the 2015 Toyota Camry and the 2015 Honda Accord. While the Accord used to have the advantage in terms of driving experience, the latest Camry has ensured that that’s no longer the case — and the same can be said for technology. Ultimately, it’s nearly impossible to pick one over the other. Enthusiasts will like the Accord’s available manual transmission and choice of coupe or sedan body styles.

If you’re looking to get an entry-level Camry or Accord, we’re giving a thumbs-up to the Accord. The Accord Sport is simply one of the best sedans around — and for a price that’s just a tad over $20,000. If you’re looking for a nicely equipped car such as an Accord EX-L or Camry XLE, however, we think that the Toyota Camry is the better car by a fairly wide margin. The interior materials give the car (in XLE and XSE trims) an upscale look and feel that just isn’t there with the Accord — no matter how much you spend. The simple truth is that you can’t go wrong with either choice if you’re trying to decide between the Camry and the Accord.

    Marriage & divorce

Marriage and divorce are both common experiences. In Western cultures, more than 90 percent of people marry by age 50. Healthy marriages are good for couples’ mental and physical health. They are also good for children; growing up in a happy home protects children from mental, physical, educational and social problems. However, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce. The divorce rate for subsequent marriages is even higher.

Adapted from the Encyclopedia of Psychology

    Research on Marriage & Divorce

Separation and divorce are emotionally difficult events, but it is possible to have a healthy breakup.

Keep your romantic partnership in good working order by talking openly, keeping it interesting and seeking help if needed.

Research on what makes a marriage work shows that people in a good marriage have completed these psychological “tasks.”

Parents of a “blended family” face plenty of challenges, but there are things you can do to make communication easier and help children adjust to their new reality.

Scientists have found that the psychological and social aspects of committed relationships between same-sex partners largely resemble those of heterosexual partnerships, that living in a state where same-sex marriage is outlawed can lead to chronic social stress and mental health problems, and that same-sex couples are as fit and capable parents as heterosexual couples.

    Getting Help

In the United States, couples marrying for the first time have approximately a fifty percent chance of divorcing. Psychologists are helping couples’ “I do” last a lifetime through development and application of scientifically tested relationship education programs.

Psychologists who work as parenting coordinators help moms and dads keep the peace.
