Repairing Your Flooded Basement #how #to #clean #up #flooded #basement

Repairing Your Flooded Basement

A flooded basement is a major threat to the safety and hygiene of your home. Standing water in your basement can damage your foundation, cause mold and mildew growth and ruin furnishings or stored items. Use these quick steps to safely remove water from your basement.

1. Examine Your Exterior

A flooded basement is sometimes the byproduct of a damaged home exterior. Check the outside of your home for signs of deterioration before entering your basement; working in a structurally unsound environment can be dangerous.

Storms and heavy rain can exploit weak parts of your home and cause flooding. Falling trees and tree limbs can also damage your exterior and create a wet basement. Additionally, storm-related destruction can affect power and gas lines. Call a pro immediately if you notice downed power lines or smell gas near your home.

2. Turn off Your Utilities

Turn off your electricity and gas before you begin work on your basement. Even if you don’t have damaged utilities–or your utility company has already turned off your electricity and gas–it’s a good idea to double check. Working in a gas- and electricity-free area will prevent accidental injuries. Here’s a quick look at how to turn off your power and gas mains:

  • Electrical
Your home’s electrical master switch is located on your breaker box. Open the breaker box door and locate the master switch. Electrical mains are usually large switches above or below your breaker panels. Flip the switch to cut power to your home. In some cases, your breakers are located in the basement. Call your utility company and have them shut off the power to your home before crossing a flooded basement to flip your power main.
  • Gas
Your gas main is usually on the outside of your home near your meter. Your main’s on-off valve is located on the incoming pipe (coming from the ground), but some newer models have the switch on the outgoing pipe. Most utility companies prefer professionals to turn your main on or off. Unless it’s an emergency, call a pro to shut off your gas.

3. Ventilate Your Home

Open the windows in your basement and throughout your home to reduce odors and lower moisture levels. You can also rent fans and blowers to move air into your basement.

4. Begin Pumping

Flood water will affect the balance of pressure between your basement’s interior and the surrounding soil. Removing all of the water in your basement at once can overwhelm your walls and cause them to crack and even collapse. Pump the water down several feet—or inches depending on the total depth of the water—and mark the height. Wait 24 hours and check the water line. If your mark is under water, it’s too early to pump. Wait another 24 hours, pump out the same amount of water and mark the level. Repeat these steps until the water level remains stable. Pump out small increments of water in 24-hour cycles until your basement is water-free.

5. Remove Flood Deposits

Remove all wet or water-damaged items in your basement. Use a shovel to scoop out mud, sediment and any other accumulation. Flood debris can cause health hazards and breed mold and mildew. Lastly, hose down your basement walls and flooring with a bleach-water mixture.

6. Change Vents and Filters

Vents and filters are particularly vulnerable to moisture and can affect the health of your home, even after abatement.

Replace moisture-affected filters immediately. Continuing to use water-damaged filters will reduce the efficiency of your home and potentially spread harmful mold and other contaminants. Mud and sediment can also accumulate in vents and block airflow. Remove any grates or vents and wash them in a bleach-water mixture before finalizing your cleaning.

The Importance of Hiring a Pro

Unless you have experience draining flooded basements, it’s a good idea to hire an abatement pro. Flood professionals will ensure your home is moisture free, and they’ll also tackle additional problems like mold and mildew growth. Flooded basements can result in harder-to-spot problems like damaged basement walls and flooring. Your pro will identify these issues and provide an appropriate solution.

Mainline Backwater Valves and backflow prevention valves #backwater #valves,sewer,sewage,check #valves,floor #drain #backwater

Backwater Valves; presenting the new, innovative valve product designed to more economically solve flooded basement and sewer backup problems.

Raw sewage in your basement. Can you imagine it spewing out of your toilets, shower stalls and sinks? With record high precipitation in many parts of the nation, some families have experienced such unfortunate events. These backups not only cause damage that is difficult to repair, but also create dangerous health hazards. A floor drain backwater valve or mainline backwater valve can save the day. These check valves are also sometimes referred to as backflow prevention valves or backflow preventer valves .

While cities and municipalities work relentlessly to clean and inspect sewer main lines, it is still possible for a sewer main to plug up and allow water and sewage to flow into the dwellings it serves. But help is here! By installing the award winning Mainline Fullport Backwater Valve (sometimes referred as a Backflow Preventer ) in the main line to the sewer, property owners reduce their exposure to such an incident to almost nothing.

Who’s at risk? Your home or building may be susceptible to sewage backups if the lowest drain is less than 24 above the nearest upstream manhole. Most building codes require owners to install a backflow prevention valve to minimize the chance of flooding at properties with drains that meet the specification mentioned above.

How does it work? A backwater valve can be installed in the basement at the exit point from the home or building, or in the sewer lateral outside of the building.

The “lateral” is the underground pipe that carries sewage from private property to the citys sewer main. The backflow valve is installed downstream and prevents sewage from backing up into the lateral beyond ( above ) this valve.

( SPECIAL OFFER. Access Box at reduced charge with the purchase of a 4963 ABS or PVC Backwater valve – an $89.00 value)

When installing in a lateral, the backwater valve is placed in an access box to make maintenance easy.

Backflow prevention valves (and all safety check valves for that matter) should be inspected on a quarterly basis and anytime you think they have closed. With our award-winning design, patented backflow valve, you can simply look through the clear plastic lid for easy visual inspection and remove the screw-off cap to clean out any debris!

Note: This type of check valve should not be confused with and does not replace the sewer trap that prevents sewer gas from entering a building where it is installed.

Measurements, Specifications and IAPMO Certifications

Mainline Fullport Backwater Valves offer the right solution for your sewer backup problems. SPECIAL OFFER: Mainline Backwater Valve Combo with Access Box ($89.00 value if purchased separately) Valves without Access Box are also available with a slight shipping discount in the price.

Be sure to check with the plumbing authority in the municipality in which your valve is to be installed to insure that your installation is in compliance with local code, and be sure have your valve inspected by your local plumbing inspector after installation. Inspect your valve frequently; the Backwater Valve through its clear plastic housing top, and the Adapt-A-Valve, by removing the gate cassette.

Pipe end-to-end, the Adapt-A-Valve takes up 6 of run in your line and the outlet is 1-1/2 LOWER than the inlet, so in just 6 the level of the pipe at the outlet side needs to be 1-1/2 lower.

Pipe end-to-end, the Backwater Valve takes up 12 of run in your line and the outlet is 3/4 LOWER than the inlet, so in just 12 the level of the pipe at the outlet side needs to be 3/4 lower.

Depending upon the amount of slope in your line (2% minimum is required for proper operation), you may need to replace several feet of pipe downstream from the valve to average out this loss of fall.

NOTE: New Straight-Fit and ML-FR4 require less slope. (refer to detail pages for these products)
