While even cars have gone the way of reliable sticker prices, hotel accommodations remain a haggler s game, with arcane and confusing rules and terminology that seem aimed to sneak dollars out of your pocket even when you think you re making out well. Take the term corporate rate, for instance. Corporate employees travel a lot; they must get a good rate, right? Well, some of them do, but probably not the ones who ask for the corporate rate.

Following are some tactics for getting the best hotel rates any time you travel. Your mileage may vary, and some hotels are more flexible than others, but these 15 tricks should keep you on the winning side of the bargaining table.

1. Ask for a lower rate.

This sounds simple, even doomed, but very often works like a charm. Ask whether the hotel is currently running any promotions or packages, and then see if any of the following special rates might apply: AAA, senior, family, hotel membership, weekend, government discount, frequent flier, convention, shareholder or corporate. Hotels sometimes even have what is called a fallback rate for travelers who are resisting the quoted rate.

2. Shop around online.

For the latest hotel bargains in locations around the world, be sure to check our discount hotel deals daily. In addition, check the Web sites of your favorite hotel chains; often they will run promotions exclusively for Web bookings.

Hotel discount reservation services like Hotels.com can also help you save considerably on hotel rates, as can general travel booking sites like Expedia and Travelocity. Note, however, that these sites may charge booking fees, so often your best strategy is to shop around to find the lowest rate and then call the hotel directly to see if they can match it.

You may also want to check aggregator sites like Kayak or Mobissimo, which search a wide range of hotel chains and travel sites, and then send you directly to the provider for booking.

Related:

3. Book by price, not by property.

If you care less about a specific hotel than getting the cheapest deal, you may want to consider choosing your own price on Priceline or shopping the anonymous (but deeply discounted) hotel inventory on Hotwire. On these sites you often won t know which hotel you re staying at until it s booked, but you can request the general location and quality (three-star, four-star, etc.) and you could save a significant amount of money over other booking sites.

4. Call the hotel directly.

Many times specials are offered at the hotel that can t be submitted through the 1-800 central reservations system. The 800 agents have no direct access to room availability, and are often not authorized to negotiate. Hotel agents are generally more in touch with availability and specials, and are therefore more flexible with rates.

Many chains allot only a select number of rooms to the central reservations system, so 800 agents may even tell you a hotel is sold out when in fact the hotel is discounting rooms because of low booking rates!

5. Be flexible with your dates.

Hotel rates can vary widely based on the time of year and the time of week when you travel. If you re staying at a property that serves mostly business travelers, you may find great weekend deals, while B B s and other leisure properties tend to have lower rates midweek. On a broader scale, know when the peak seasons to visit your destination are such as wintertime in the Caribbean or summertime in Europe. Rates will be sky-high at those times of year, so scheduling your trip for a less popular travel time could save you big bucks on your hotel.

6. Take advantage of last-minute specials.

If your travel plans are flexible, you could get a great rate by waiting to book your hotel until the last minute. Hotel managers are often willing to lower their rates to fill their last remaining rooms.

7. Consider a package deal.

If you re looking for both airfare and hotels, shop around and see if it s worth booking the two together as a package deal. You may not have as many hotel choices as you would if you were booking your lodging separately, but the discounts could be worth the lack of flexibility.

8. Consider a private sale.

Private sale sites Jetsetter.com and TabletHotels.com/privatesale/ offer exclusive deals on hotels and resorts, but you must be a member to access them, and most sales don t last very long. If you re open-minded about where you want to go and when, these sites can help you land deep discounts at upscale properties.

9. Look beyond the big hotels.

If you re seeing high rates at big chain hotels, consider some alternatives. These could include bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals, hostels or independently owned small hotels most of which can t be found on big booking engines. For advice on how to research these, see our guide to finding hidden hotels.

10. Know the full cost.

You may think you ve found a great deal, but keep in mind that the base rate isn t the only thing that will determine your total bill. Be sure to ask what taxes, resort fees, parking costs, energy surcharges, and other odds and ends will apply to your final tally. Even if one hotel has a lower base rate, it may end up being a more expensive option once all the extras are added in. For more information, see Hidden Hotel Fees.

11. Keep an eye on your credit card statements.

Occasionally, buried in all that junk stuffed in with your credit card statement are vouchers or guarantees for good hotel rates offered in conjunction with your credit card company. Typically, you have to request a specific rate code, included in the literature, and reserve and pay for the room with that particular credit card (or one issued by the same bank or company).

12. Use coupon and voucher books.

The number of discount coupon and voucher companies, both in print and on the Internet, is almost mind-boggling. Everywhere you look, you can tear off, cut out, download, print out or merely mention a discount coupon rate, and you can save on just about every aspect of travel. Do a Web search for coupons for your destination or hotel chain for some links to local and online coupon distributors.

In the midst of this abundance, one discount book stands head and shoulders above the rest: Entertainment Books published by Entertainment Publications. The great majority of discounts available come in at half price, whether they re two-for-one meals or movies, or straight 50 percent discounts on hotel rooms. The company publishes books annually for dozens of major U.S. and Canadian destinations. They can be purchased online for $25 to $50.

Once you ve booked your hotel, don t just rest on your laurels. Call back or check online in another month or so and see whether rates have gone down. If they have, cancel your booking and rebook your stay at the lower rate. (Read the hotel s cancellation policy carefully before doing so to make sure you won t have to pay any penalties.)

14. Use your points.

Can t find the rate you want? Try paying with hotel points instead. If you belong to a hotel s loyalty program and have accumulated enough reward points, you can often use them to pay for your room (or for an upgrade to a better class of room).

15. Leave your bags in the car.

Planning to negotiate when you arrive? Don t haul a huge piece of luggage into the lobby and then tell the agent that you d just as soon go elsewhere if they can t bring their rates down. You ll look tired, hassled, sick of lugging bags and, to a shrewd hotel clerk, ready to pay handsomely to unpack that suitcase.

Five Ways to Get a Better Hotel Room Rate

Looking to score a deal on a great hotel? These digital tips and tricks from T+L will ensure you get the best price in the house.

Know the Market

Timing is key. The Web-based price predictor feature on TheSuitest forecasts how room prices are expected to fluctuate for the next month—use it to find the right time to buy in any market. Then cross-check with DealAngel and Bing’s Hotel Rate Indicator—both compare quoted rates with a hotel’s average cost, telling you which deals are really worthwhile.

Stay Notified

Bank on price drops. You don’t have to do all the work yourself. Sign up for e-mail notifications from Yapta, and the booking site will alert you if room prices go down; if you make a reservation with Tingo, they will track your rate and refund you if a cheaper one pops up.

Book Blind

Suspense can pay off. You can save up to 60 percent with mystery-booking pioneer Hotwire and Travelocity’s Top Secret Deals. The trade-off: they don’t tell you where you’re staying until you’ve paid. For that, turn to Bidgoggles and HotelDealsRevealed, which can help you figure out what property might be behind the curtain. Better yet, Guestmob offers similar discounts if you let it choose one of four predetermined hotels for you (all in the same part of town).

Try Your Luck

It’s not as risky as you think. We love Priceline’s Name Your Price auction tool, which lets you propose a rate to properties you’re considering. Equally worthwhile is BackBid. Use it to submit the details of an existing, refundable reservation, and similar hotels will try to outdo one another on savings. You can also win big with Roomer: like StubHub for hotels, it’s a resale marketplace for nonrefundable bookings—sold here at rock-bottom prices.

Procrastinate

Early birds don’t always get the worm.Same-day booking apps such as HotelTonight (free; iOS) and Booking.com Tonight (free; Android, iOS) yield up to 70 percent off regular rates, if you’re willing to wait until the last minute. Thanks to their popularity, there’s plenty of inventory to choose from daily. Pro tip: the deepest discounts surface on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and right after holidays.

Trip Doctor: How to Get Last-Minute Hotel Deals

Procrastinators, rejoice! There’s a slew of new apps aimed at snagging a last-minute hotel deal. Here, our tech expert’s road-tested favorites.

HotelTonight (Android, iOS): The pioneer of same-day booking apps, HotelTonight features staff-vetted properties in more than a hundred cities around the world, with tags like Hip, Luxe, or Charming to guide your search. Expect trendy boutique hotels and even some splashy new openings—but don’t get too attached to any one spot. Deals change daily and can be reserved only from noon onward.

Our Best Score: Mexico City’s sleek Las Suites for $163 a night (37 percent off).

Booking.com Tonight (iOS): With the most properties, this Priceline and Booking.com team effort offers the best comparison shopping. Case in point: we found 184 hotels in New York City on a recent search, varying from Best Westerns to the St. Regis. Deals become available at midnight—earlier than most apps—and they’re valid for one- and two-night stays only.

Our Best Score: The Albion Hotel in Miami Beach for $127 a night (40 percent off).

Blink (iOS): Europe’s answer to HotelTonight, Blink kicks off deals at 11 a.m. each day with a curated selection of four hotels per city, and favors trusted midlevel and luxury brands—think Sofitel, Hilton, and Meliá—over independent gems. It even covers smaller destinations such as Trieste, Italy, or San Sebastián, Spain—perfect for arranging side trips on a whim.

Our Best Score: The Grande Hotel, in Porto, Portugal, for $90 a night (30 percent off).

Hotel Deals by Lastminute.com (iOS): If making day-of decisions leaves you anxious, this Travelocity-owned app lets you book a week before checking in. The discounts are impressive (up to 55 percent off), especially for the “Top Secret Hotels”—you find out the name after you pay. Don’t like typing your payment info in public? The app cleverly lets you scan in a photo of your credit card instead.

Hot Hotels (Android, iOS): Launched in Spain last year, this Europe-centered app has a refreshing spin: a portion of its proceeds buy carbon credits that offset each user’s stay. Not surprisingly, its inventory is strongest on the Iberian peninsula (with 50 cities listed in Spain alone), but it also dabbles in South American destinations such as Lima and Buenos Aires.

How to Get the Lowest Rate on Your Hotel Room

“The traveler who can do the most research wins,” says Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor.

For many trips, the lodging accommodations tend to be a major budget eater, and finding the best hotel price depends on the destination, season and hotel availability.

Even though the experts say the best time to book your flight for domestic travel is 21 to 35 days before you depart, if you’re comfortable with a hotel rate, no matter how far out you are from your travel dates, book it, recommends Maria Katime, spokesperson for KAYAK. “Hotel rates are not as volatile as airfare.”

To help reduce hotel costs to make your summer vacation more affordable, experts offer the following tips:

Know when to look. As a general rule, hotel rates drop closer to check-in date, says Sarah Keeling, director of public relations at Expedia, but there are risks for waiting until the last minute.

“You may be forced into taking the room with the single queen bed for your family of four.” She suggests booking your hotel 14 to 21 days prior to your travel dates.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Hotel rates in Orlando and Las Vegas tend to start dropping between three months or 30 days ahead of arrival dates, according to Katime. Rates in New York tend to fall as the check-in nears, and rates in Chicago generally increase as the arrival date nears.

Look outside the epicenter “If you’re going to a very popular destination, the price decreases a significant amount if you go outside that attraction’s center,” says Katime. Research to make sure moving farther away from an attraction is still the most affordable option when adding a rental car or public transportation into the mix.

Be flexible with travel dates. Sometimes lengthening or shortening your trip by a day or two can bring the overall price down, says Gabe Saglie, senior editor at Travelzoo. High-demand markets may have different pricing for weekend and weekday stays.

Become loyal. “These days, hotels come up with very aggressive loyalty plans as a way to encourage people to visit again and again,” says Saglie. Members can benefit from amenities and upgrades, which can be a good value boost.

It’s not all about hotels. “[Vacation rentals] can often provide significant savings for families and larger groups traveling for a week or longer,” says Ferencsik. These properties have larger common areas, multiple bedrooms and more living space. If booking two hotel rooms, a vacation rental can save you up to 65%, according to TripAdvisor. “It’s the comforts of a home away from home but at a cool vacation destination,” says Ferencsik. They also come equipped with a kitchen, which could bring more savings from not having to eat out every night.

Bed and breakfasts can also bring significant savings, says Ferencsik, and most also have the great benefit of a complimentary breakfast, afternoon snack or happy hour. “B Bs are a fun option for travelers who like to socialize with other travelers—you can meet the other guests at breakfast and happy hours.”

Look off-season. “Seasonality is very big” when it comes to prices, says Saglie. “If you want to go to a luxury hotel in the Caribbean, it’ll cost you a lot more if you go in February than if you go in June.” Choose destinations having a natural slowdown in travel—consider the Caribbean, Mexico or a ski destination in the summer. “Dealing with a little bit of heat can be a great way to save money,” Saglie says. In the winter, London hotels are much cheaper than they are in July or August.

Choose your day wisely. Popular business travel destinations, like New York City or Chicago, may have lower rates on weekends while a leisure destination, like Los Angeles or Miami, may be more affordable during the week, says Saglie. Except for holidays, family-friendly destinations might have greater available and lower pricing during the week when kids are in school.

Consider waiting until the last minute. Booking your hotel in advance gives peace of mind but might not be great for your wallet. A last-minute booking can have significant discounts, according to Saglie.

“Mobile apps do a great job of pulling together last-minute deals in the area surrounding you,” says Courtney Scott. Travelocity’s senior editor.

But be warned: Availability does dwindle the closer you get to your travel dates. Experts caution against booking last minute if you’re traveling with a family. Although booking last minute can save you 30% to 40% on a hotel, you won’t be able to plan ahead and won’t have the stability that a package deal offers.

Look for renovated hotels. “During and right after renovations, hotels usually offer some great discounts,” says Saglie.

Bid on your hotel. Websites like Priceline.com or topsecrethotels.com claim to get users up to 45% off the published rate of a hotel but you won’t know the hotel until after it’s booked. This could work when you’ve already booked flights or are taking the train to your destination, says Scott. “If you can be adventurous and spontaneous, this is a great way to save.”

Book package deals. “The package concept may be a better deal because vacation packages providers can better negotiate room rates than the average consumer,” says Saglie. Occasionally you can find cheaper hotel rates without booking a package but for the most part, packages are more economical.

“When you bundle them together, hotels will release their deepest discounts,” says Scott. You can save up to $525 on average for a five-day trip. Most websites do the calculation so you can see the actual savings from bundling your hotel and flight versus booking them separately.

How to Remove Grease Stains from Leather

Kelli asked: How do I clean butter from leather boots? I dripped melted butter onto my leather boots and can t get it off. Can you help?

Grease and oil stains can be tricky to remove from leather. The residue left behind seems to leave a permanent mark. Use the method below to draw the grease out of the leather and remove the stain for good.

You Will Need:

  • Talcum powder or another absorbent powder
  • Lint free soft cloths (microfiber cloths work well)

Steps to Remove the Stains:

  1. Blot the stain with a microfiber cloth. Remove as much of the grease as possible.
  2. Cover the stain liberally with talcum powder or another absorbent powder, such as cornstarch or wheat germ.
  3. Allow the powder to sit on the stain overnight. The powder will draw the grease and moisture out of the leather.
  4. In the morning, brush off the powder and the stain will be gone.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Similar to the grain of wood, leather has a lie or a line of texture to it. If possible, apply any cleaning products following the lie. If you can t see the direction of the texture, work from the outside of the stain towards the center.
  • If the leather is not protected, the grease will soak in and will be nearly impossible to remove completely. Treating the stain immediately is your best bet for any chance of removing the stain. Once set, you may be able to lighten it with the method above.
  • If the leather has a protective finish on it, a water-based leather cleaner should remove the stains. Apply the cleaner following the package guidelines.
  • For stubborn or serious grease stains, a leather degreaser can be used. Follow the instructions on the label of your selected product.
  • Once clean, apply a stain guard to the leather surface. This will allow for easier clean up and stain removal for future spills.

9 Hospice Marketing Ideas that Get Customers

Hospice Marketing Ideas

Hospice is a very unique business wherein a provider cannot count on repeat business. While a patient may survive for a few months, every person put on hospice will be terminally ill. This means that eventually, they will no longer be clients. However, there are a few ways to continually market hospice services so that there are always patients that need to be cared for adequately.

Health Conventions

Health conventions are a great marketing method because someone in the audience will find hospice services to be a better alternative to hospital care for clients. By explaining the benefits that hospice provides and offering solid advice, it will be possible to boost leads greatly through health conventions.

Elderly Homes

While unfortunate, going to a target audience is easy with elderly homes. As a person gets older, the chances of needing your services will grow greatly. Elderly patients and their families can be approached to offer a better alternative to hospital care. Instead, promote the fact that the ill patient will be able to be treated at their own home and will be much more comfortable as a result. Putting on a presentation or handing out fliers at these facilities is another great avenue of promotion.

Provide Cheaper Alternatives to Hospital Care

Marketing hospice as a cheaper alternative to hospital care is a great approach. Clients and their families do not want to worry about insurance covering their medical bills and since hospice is cheaper, it only makes sense to promote the fact.

Remember Past Client’s Families

There are always special clients that will stick in a person’s mind. By remembering these clients, it is also possible to remind families about the service provided. This can be done immediately after a patient passes with a simple condolences card or it can be done months later. Either way, this is a sincere way to remind the family of past clients just how well their loved ones were cared for.

Sponsor a Family

By sponsoring a family, it will be possible to help the local community and promote your hospice services at the same time. This can be done by visiting a hospital and picking one family to sponsor for free. The press will usually pick up on these offerings and will be able to help enhance your public image and market yourself further. One act of kindness can boost sales dramatically.

Signage

Current clients may allow you to place a sign in their yard advertising your services. This is normally done with a small discount, but it is not always a necessity. If a neighborhood is particularly busy, this can help to boost sales dramatically. Surrounding neighbors will also be more susceptible to using your services since this is a form of referral that was seen right in their front yard.

Market in Elderly Publications

There are a plethora of magazines and periodicals that are aimed at the elderly. It is never too early for a person to inquire about hospice care even when they are currently healthy. If an ad is taken out in one of these publications, it will provide a seed in the reader’s mind that could develop into a future client. Advertising using publications is often preferred with hospice as the normal client base is not as computer savvy as younger generations.

Classifieds and Yellow Pages

The clients that need hospice will need a way to find your services easily. Local classified ads as well as the yellow pages offer advertisement spots. Purchase one of these locations to ensure that your ad has the visibility it needs to stand out amongst the competition. Do not forget to add your listing to online classifieds as well as directories. These are two great outlets that can be used to further boost exposure and marketing efforts.

Network with Doctors

When a patient has been diagnosed as terminally ill, they will have received this diagnosis from a medical professional. Networking with local doctors will provide a great base for referrals. Friendly doctors will offer referrals for free and will simply be happy that their patients can rest peacefully at home. Other doctors will request a referral fee which will usually be provided as a way to entice a doctor into providing referrals your way. Since this referral system will likely only work in one direction, a new referral fee will definitely help boost the number of willing doctors.

Hospice is a very unique industry where customers will not likely result in referrals. However, a little bit of effort and the right hospice marketing ideas can turn a slow season into one that is filled with patients that need the proper care during their final days or weeks. Through the use of various marketing outlets, it will be possible to enhance the image of a hospice provider and draw in continual clients.

Getting off the sex offender registry

Mr. McColl, a sex crime lawyer. has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of sex offender cases, from getting No-bills before the Grand Jury (that is, keeping an indictment from being returned); successfully trying aggravated sexual assault cases to a jury or a panel of “members” in a military court martial with resulting “not guilty” verdicts; filing successful applications for writs of habeas corpus to set aside convictions; and, preparing motions to have a client’s name removed from the sexual offender registry.

Contact Arch McColl now for a 30 minutes of free consultation on how to get off the sex offender registry.

Examples of sex offender registry removal cases successfully argued by Mr. McColl

Case Study 1

An example of sex offense lawyer McColl’s having set aside aggravated sexual assault convictions would be McColl’s getting back-to-back life sentences overturned from a State District Court in Denton County, Texas, because of an alleged sexual assault by the client of a 13-year-old.

Sex offense attorney McColl successfully (and accurately) convinced the Court that the conviction was erroneous and was able to free the client, who would never have been outside of prison for the rest of his life.

Case Study 2

An example of sex offender attorney McColl’s efforts in connection with drafting legislation was to get a bill sponsored by a State Senator and a State Representative from Dallas, to introduce companion bills whose purpose was to allow for a jury trial on the issue of mistake of fact of the age of the alleged victim, where the so-called victim had already created, in advance of the offense, a tangible object (such as a website or fake driver’s license) with the obvious purpose of deceiving the public as to his/her age.

Case Study 3

Another example of aggressive, innovative work in a sex-related criminal case occurred where McColl, on more than one occasion, has interviewed the underage, alleged victim on videotape before the police or Child Protective Service got involved; and, got the potential Complainant/victim to acknowledge that they were mistaken and/or that the offense did not happen; and, that they were just retaliating for having been punished (by a teacher or parent) or having been spurned because of their unsuccessful romantic advances ( e.g. to a teacher). *

Process (or how to get off sex offender registry )

As for a client getting his name off the sex offender registry, that takes a combination of the following: A thorough knowledge of a complicated area of the law; intense scrutiny of all the case facts and the biographical facts of the client; imagination; resourcefulness; targeted persistence and a clean record of the client since the date of the entry of the judgment for the sexual offense. There is an interrelationship between the federal statutory scheme and any state statutory scheme. An effective legal strategy is to use the federal statutory scheme as leverage for the petition to get off the state registry. Under the federal statute there are three levels of severity of sexual offense:

Tier 1 – In general, non-violent sexual contact;
Tier 2 – Non-violent but serious commercial involvement with sex, such as sex trafficking;
Tier 3 – Aggravated sexual assault involving violence, kidnaping, etc.

The time periods required to stay on the federal sexual registry are as follows: Tier 1 – 15 years; Tier 2 – 25 years; Tier 3 – Lifetime. Under the federal statute (Sexual Offender Registration Act, also known as SORNA), one can file an application to reduce the period of time that one’s name must remain on the sexual offender federal registry.

Four things are necessary in order to apply to shorten the above referenced periods of time under SORNA:

  1. The sex offender, for a ten-year period, has not committed any crime punishable by over one year’s imprisonment, since the date of his sentence ( e.g. custody, probation, supervised release), (Tier 1); or 25 years (Tier 3); the statute does not provide for a reduction of the time period of 25 years (Tier 2);
  2. The sex offender has committed no additional sex crime other than the original one;
  3. The sex offender has successfully completed a certified sexual rehabilitation course that is accepted by the federal government;
  4. The sex offender has successfully completed probation, parole or supervised release.

A successful legal strategy a sex offender lawyer could employ is to apply for the reduction in the time period under SORNA and then, once granted, file the petition in the applicable state court for getting completely off the state sex offender registry.

This whole process takes time and patience, but the upside is that a person doubles his chances for a successful petition in state court if he first gets the federal motion granted, as described above. The downside, of course, is that the offender may have to wait a few years. However, given the alternative ( e.g. in Texas) of lifetime registration, and the greatly improved chance of getting the state petition granted after the federal motion is granted, it is well worth any wait that may be required, and one can be productive during the waiting period, as noted below.

During the waiting period before filing, there is much preparation that needs to be accomplished, such as the following: The Complainant can be approached and an affidavit obtained from her/him consenting to the applicant getting off probation, but this is a delicate process, and needs to be approached very cautiously; numerous letters of recommendation, especially from employers, should be obtained. However, for those letters to have maximum effect, they must contain specific comments about certain categories. Polygraphs can be taken regarding the facts and circumstances of the case and/or the rehabilitation that has been accomplished; the details and the credentials of the programs that have been taken or, in the case of a residential, enrolled in, are very important; a detailed employment history and current detailed employment, specifying the skill and level of responsibility required, are critical; past accomplishments where the offender has shown a civic responsibility to nonprofit or charitable institutions on a sustained basis is helpful; a carefully worded statement from the offender documenting his self-knowledge, his rehabilitation and his plans for the future is vital; the detailed clinical report of a Ph.D. psychologist who specializes in sex offender evaluation is a must; and, there are up to a dozen other important items that will make the federal motion, and, later, the state petition, compelling.

Most, if not all, of the items noted above can be used in support of both the federal motion and the state petition. Once the federal motion is granted, if the items are to be used for the state petition, they should be appropriately updated. The legal relief available under both the federal SORNA and Art. 62.401, et seq. of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, exists for a reason: The U.S. Congress and the applicable state legislature have determined that it is appropriate to give relief to those who have earned it. The successful lawyer will present an extremely well-documented and compelling case, showing by clear and convincing evidence why the client deserves the privilege of receiving legal relief, as provided by both federal and state law.

In conclusion

Arch McColl, an experienced sex crime attorney. can get a client’s name removed from the sex offender registry or answer a client’s questions regarding that subject or sex offender prosecutions in general. For over 30 years, Mr. McColl has had a successful history dealing with sex-related offenses, including derailing many potential prosecutions. He has also taken clients to the legislature to testify on pending bills designed to ameliorate harsh penal code statutes relating to sexual offenses. He has also been successful in filing applications for writs of habeas corpus to get judgments in sexual assault cases completely set aside.

Best Thin Film Solar Panels – Amorphous, Cadmium Telluride or CIGS? Energy

Thank You

Your details have been received and are currently being processed.

You will be contacted by up to three, independent, trusted solar system suppliers shortly (usually within 48 hours).

Congratulations on taking the first step towards a rewarding green investment!

Best Thin Film Solar Panels – Amorphous, Cadmium Telluride or CIGS?

Thin film solar panels accounted for 11% of all solar panel sales in 2011. [1] Production capacity is expected to grow at an annual rate of 24%, reaching more than 22 GW by 2020 (or a global market share of 38% in terms module production). [2]

There are three primary types of thin film solar panels on the market today: Amorphous silicon (a-Si), cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium selenide (CIS/CIGS). In the overview chart below you can see their main characteristics:

Protocrystalline, nanocrystalline (nc-Si), black silicon, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) and other organic solar cells will not be covered in this article. These technologies still have a long way to go in research and development before they are ready for the market.

Amorphous silicon (a-Si), cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium selenide (CIS/CIGS) have several other benefits and downsides in addition to what you read in the chart above:

  • Significantly higher temperature resistance compared to crystalline-based solar panels.
  • Many thin-film modules are flexible, which greatly increases the number of potential applications (e.g. curved surfaces, building-integrated photovoltaics).
  • Better resistance against shading.
  • Lower efficiency rates mean you need a physically larger system for the same power output.
  • Installation costs goes up because you need to install more solar panels.
  • Thin film solar panels tend to degrade faster.
  • Silicon costs are declining and silicon-based solar panels (e.g. mono- and polycrystalline) are becoming more affordable.

Amorphous silicon (a-Si)

The first thin film solar cells were based on amorphous silicon. The technology is most commonly used in devices that require very little power (e.g. pocket calculators) because of low efficiency rates.

The future of larger-scale amorphous silicon solar panels does not look very bright: Sharp retired 160 out of their 320 MW production capacity in Japan earlier this year.

Optisolar, Signet Solar, Unisolar, and many other companies that were touting the amorphous technology are acquired, bankrupt or closed.

Energy Matters, one of the leading solar installers in Australia, recommend amorphous thin film solar panels for their customers in far North Queensland and the Northern Territory due to performance advantages in high temperatures (better heat resistance).

Cadmium Telluride (CdTe)

It’s all about First Solar when it comes to cadmium telluride solar panels. Abound Solar has declared bankruptcy and General Electric`s PrimeStar is failing. First Solar is the world-record holder for CdTe thin film module (14.4%) and cell (18.7%) efficiency, and backs their solar panels with a limited 25-year power output warranty. [5] The company is currently building a 230 MW solar power plant in Antelope Valley and looks to generate $0.8 billion to $1.0 billion of operating cash flow in 2013. [7]

In some situations, typically multi-kilowatt systems in higher temperatures, CdTe-based solar panels can beat mono- and polycrystalline solar panels in terms of costs.

There are, however, environmental issues with products that rely on cadmium – a heavy metal and potential carcinogen that can accumulate in plant and animal tissue. While the threat is minimal as long as the compound is contained within the solar panel, the disposal and recycling can be both dangerous and costly.

Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIS/CIGS)

Solyndra, MiaSolé, Nanosolar, AQT, Solopower and many more – the list of CIS/CIGS companies that have failed goes on and on. In the midst of distress sales and bankruptcies, the Japanese manufacturer Solar Frontier seems to be doing something right. The company recently built out a 1 GW factory and shipped 577 MW worth of solar panels in 2011.

The CIGS-technology might also see some success via Hanergy, a Chinese company that has gained a strong position in the thin film solar market through the acquisition of MiaSolé and Solibro.

In 2013, scientists at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, successfully created CIGS solar cells on flexible polymer foils with a new record efficiency of 20.4%. [3] This makes CIGS-based solar panels the highest performing thin film solar panels to date.

Also worth mentioning is that less of the toxic material cadmium is present in CIGS solar cells (compared to solar cells made out of cadmium telluride).

So, which thin film solar panel type is really the best? First of all, a mono- or polycrystalline solar panel is a better choice for the vast majority of homeowners. If you`re looking for a large-scale system, have the extra space required, and live in an area where the temperature is unusually high, thin film solar panels can make sense. If you want a flexible option, your options are amorphous silicon or CIGS.

The next step would be to predict long-term earnings and costs of specific solar modules. Go for a product that is backed up with a good performance guarantee/warranty.

If you want expert guidance to find out which solar panel is better in your situation, simply request a Free Solar Consultation .

How to Get the Best Hotel Deals

How to Get the Best Hotel Deals

I m a big fan of comparison websites. They allow you to compare all your options and prices on one screen without having to spend hours researching prices on different websites. In some cases, like car rental. comparison sites can work out really well, with no booking fees, cancellation fees and no payment up front. But when it comes to hotels and accommodation, do comparison websites really get you the best deal? Before you book your next vacation, read this guide to make sure you don t get ripped off!

Tips to get the Best Hotel Deal

  • Comparison sites like Expedia, Travelocity and Hotels.com are good for doing initial research and comparing your options.
  • Once you narrow down your choices to the hotel (or few hotels) that you would like to stay at, head to the hotel s own website to see if their price is the same. Often they will have extra room types or prices that they don t supply to comparison websites.
  • Look on the hotel s website to see if they have any special deals or coupons.
  • Watch out for booking fees and credit card fees. This is not exclusive to the comparison sites; some hotels also charge for this.
  • Check cancellation and amendments policies before you book. This applies to both comparison websites and the hotel s own website. Check to see if they charge you a fee for amending or canceling bookings. Your travel insurance may cover this, but it s easier to get your money back straight from the hotel.
  • Check what s included in your room rate. Some places will include things like Wi-Fi internet and local calls. Ironically, it s usually the expensive five-star hotels that charge for these things like a wounded bull!
  • Don t be afraid to negotiate. Try calling the hotel and see if they can offer a better price, room upgrade, or throw in some extras. This can work well if it s close to the date and they still have plenty of rooms vacant.
  • Some people swear by bidding sites like Priceline, and others hate them. If you want to give it a shot, Gadling has an excellent guide on how to game Priceline to get the best deal.

Let s Look at a Real Life Example

The following example is searching for the same hotel on various websites. In each case I ll choose the cheapest available rate and highlight any extra costs for the booking. The hotel I m looking at is in Australia (my home country), but I ve tried it for several different countries around the world and got similar results.

Two nights (weekend) at the Mantra on Queen in Brisbane, Australia.

Hotels.com
Room: $298.00
No credit card or booking fees
Free cancellation until two weeks before the arrival date
Total: $298.00

Wotif.com
Room: $298.00
Credit card fee: $5.50
$25 cancellation charge up to two weeks before the arrival date
Total: $303.50

Mantra.com.au
Room: $248.00
2% credit card surcharge: $4.84
$25 cancellation charge up to two weeks before the arrival date
Total: $246.84

As you can see, even with the credit card surcharge, the hotel s own website worked out cheaper in this case, as they had rooms that were not advertised on the comparison websites. I should point out that Mantra is quite a large chain of hotels in Australia, so they have some strict terms around cancellation and other fees. I ve found that if you re booking at much smaller independent hotels or B Bs that you can often negotiate much better rates by going direct.

Do you have a great tip for booking accommodation? Leave your best tactics in the comments below! And before you plan your vacation, don t forget to check out my guides on getting the best deals on car rental. and how to take great travel photos !

A hotel like this could be yours for up to 40 percent off

While blind-booking site Hotwire doesn’t reveal a hotel’s name until you book it, detailed information provided on the site about the property gives you a fair picture. You can use these details about a hotel’s star rating, amenities, and location to reveal the hotel’s name, with the help of independent websites like Bid Goggles. Hotwire Revealed. Bidding for Travel. and Better Bidding .

GET EXPERT TRAVEL TIPS AND DEALS WITH OUR FREE E-NEWSLETTERS!

My fave tool is Bid Goggles (bidgoggles.com). a pet project by some travelers and computer programmers. After you’ve targeted a promising deal on Hotwire. copy the mystery hotel’s amenities, star rating, and neighborhood into the Bid Goggles tool (open in a separate browser tab or window). The site matches the Hotwire description with the description of similar hotels that other travelers have visited.

For example, I recently helped a family member book a room in Pittsburgh for a wedding. I fired up Hotwire and quickly locked in on a “four-star, downtown Pittsburgh area hotel” with a $131 a nightly rate. Hotwire listed this hotel’s amenities as including a fitness center, a business center, high-speed Internet access, and spa services. I went to Bid Goggles and punched in these details about the property. The site predicted that the hotel would be either the Renaissance Hotel or the Omni William Penn Hotel. I went ahead with the booking and lo and behold it was the Omni William Penn.

Hotwire Revealed is another site that works similarly and successfully.

Both sites are far, far from perfect, though. Nobody has a magic decoder ring that can reveal every one of Hotwire’s listings perfectly every time. But the sites provide close-enough guesses. In the above example, Bid Goggles had predicted the Omni William Penn and the Renaissance Hotel. I looked at the websites of those hotels and was pleased with how they looked and their general location that I felt confident that even if I didn’t get either of those hotels I would get a hotel that was fairly similar. The process boosted my confidence that I was doing right by my relatives when planning their trip.

The information about successful Hotwire bookings is more comprehensive and more frequently updated at the Bidding For Travel forums and, to a lesser extent, at Better Bidding. But there’s a trade-off: Those forums require more patience to use than the other sites.

Have you had some big hotel wins on Hotwire? How do you know when the price is right? Share your tips in the comments. We can’t all travel as much as we’d like to, especially during these uncertain times. But if we pool our knowledge together, we can help each other save big bucks and travel better.

How insurance companies set rates – How to get cheap car insurance

#

How to get cheap car insurance

For many people, car insurance is a major expense category in the household budget. And because it’s against the law to drive without car insurance, it’s not a budget item that can be eliminated unless you’re willing to go car-free. That doesn’t mean, though, that you’re stuck paying sky-high rates.

How insurance companies set rates

Like health insurance, car insurance comes with both premiums and deductibles. The premiums are what you pay the insurance company every month to maintain your coverage. The deductible is what you’ll pay when you start making claims, up to a certain annual cap of, say, $1,000.

It’s worth noting that most people who say they want cheap car insurance mean that they want car insurance with low monthly premiums. But, as with health insurance, there’s a risk to having a policy with low premiums and a high deductible. In the event of a serious accident, you’ll have to meet that deductible. So, one way to get lower premiums is to opt for a higher deductible, but this is only a safe strategy if you have enough liquidity to cover your deductible in the event of an accident.

When car insurance companies set insurance premium rates they take several factors into account. These include applicants’ age, gender and driving history, as well as the type of car the applicant drives and the driver’s state of residence. While you can’t change your age, there are other steps you can take to get favorable rates from car insurance companies.

Types of coverage

Insurance companies charge more for comprehensive car insurance than they do for basic coverage. In most states you’re required to have liability insurance to cover any damage you do to another car or driver. The extent of that coverage requirement varies by state. In most states, you’re not required to have insurance to cover damage to your own car, or injuries you might suffer in an accident.

If you choose to add insurance coverage for yourself, you can opt for comprehensive coverage or collision coverage. Collision coverage, as the name indicates, covers damage from an accident with another car or an object, and in the event that your car flips. Comprehensive coverage covers things like theft, vandalism and natural disasters, too.

So, while you’ll almost definitely need to buy liability coverage to cover other drivers’ damages, you might not need to buy physical damage coverage for your own vehicle. It will depend on the terms of your lease if you’re leasing a car, and on your own assessment of the risks you face.

If you’re buying a valuable new car, you’ll probably want comprehensive coverage. If you’re paying cash for an older, used vehicle, you can probably get away with a more basic level of coverage. Whatever insurance option you choose for yourself, be sure to comply with state laws relating to liability insurance for any damage you might do to another driver. Once you have a car insurance policy, carry proof of insurance with you in your vehicle at all times.

How to get cheap car insurance rates

In the long term, one of the best ways to get cheap car insurance is to be a safe, responsible driver. The worst drivers have high rates because the insurance company needs financial compensation for the high likelihood that it will have to pay out in the event these drivers get in an accident. If you have a spotless driving record, keep it up. If you have some accidents or tickets in your past, they shouldn’t drive your rates up forever. If it’s been a few years since your last incident, you can try calling your insurance company and asking for a lower rate, using your recent, safe driving record as a bargaining chip.

Another way to get cheap car insurance is to use the same insurance company for more than one type of insurance and get a discount for your loyalty. For example, you can contact the insurance company that provides your homeowners insurance, life insurance or motorcycle insurance and ask if the company can give you a good deal on car insurance. If you have more than one car, you can bundle the insurance coverage on both vehicles.

Your credit score will also affect your car insurance rates, just like it affects the rates you’re offered when shopping for a mortgage. If your credit has improved since you last bought car insurance, you may be able to negotiate your way to cheaper car insurance. And if you pay your car insurance premiums and bills on time and in full, you’ll build up goodwill with your insurer and might qualify for promotional rates.

If you don’t drive very much during the year, you might get cheaper car insurance from a usage-based plan than you would from regular car insurance. Track your mileage before you start shopping for car insurance and see if your low mileage makes you eligible for a better deal.

If you’re under 25, you’ll pay higher premiums, all things being equal. That’s because insurance companies judge young drivers to be riskier drivers. You can get lower rates by joining your parents’ plan, or by using your good grades to get a discount on rates, if your insurance company offers that option. Once you reach your mid-20s there’s no reason to keep paying the high rates that insurance companies levy on young drivers. You can ask your insurance company to lower your rate, or shop around for insurance from another provider.

Finally, the type of car you drive can affect your car insurance rates. Big, powerful and flashy cars are more likely to trigger high car insurance rates because the insurance company assumes you’ll be more likely to speed in that kind of vehicle, and that the vehicle will be a target for theft. Vehicles with high repair costs (such as foreign-made cars) may be more expensive to cover, too. In some states, having a used car will mean lower rates because rates are affected by your car’s replacement value. But in other states, rates are based on vehicles’ safety features, so having an older car won’t necessarily help you get cheap car insurance. If your car has special safety and/or anti-theft features, you may qualify for cheaper car insurance on that basis.

Bottom line

If you don’t have a vehicle or you’re thinking about getting a new (or used) car, it may be worth doing some research to find out which kinds of cars will get you the lowest car insurance rates. And if you’re paying a lot for car insurance now, you may be able to get cheaper coverage by negotiating your premiums or switching providers.

What Is a Mortgage Pre-Approval? Get an Edge When Home Shopping

If you want to stand out from the sea of other home buyers in a competitive housing market, one surefire way to do that is to get pre-approved for a mortgage. That means a lender has guaranteed to give you a loan before you’ve even made an offer—or even before you’ve seen a home you like! Granted, this may seem like a whole lot of prep work, but here’s why mortgage pre-approval matters, and how it can give you an edge when shopping for a home .

    What is a mortgage pre-approval?

Mortgage pre-approval is a commitment from a lender to provide you with home financing up to a certain loan amount—basically the stamp of approval that you have the money, credit history, and other credentials to buy a home up to that price.

    Related Articles

“Lenders will do a full review of income, assets, and credit in order to issue a pre-approval,” says Sarah Valentini. president and co-founder of Radius Financial Group.

How to get pre-approved: The paperwork you need

Be prepared to offer up a pile of paperwork to earn your pre-approval. In general, the paperwork you’ll need to assemble for your lender includes the following:

    • Pay stubs from the past 30 days showing your year-to-date income
    • Two years of federal tax returns
    • Two years of W2 forms from your employer
    • 60 days or a quarterly statement of all of your asset accounts, which include your checking and savings, as well as any investment accounts such as CDs, IRAs, and other stocks or bonds
    • Any other current real estate holdings
    • Residential history for the past two years, including landlord contact information if you rented

    Pre-approval vs. pre-qualification: What’s the difference?

Mortgage pre-qualification should not be confused with pre-approval. Pre-qualification is based solely on verbal information you tell a lender about your income and savings, says Valentini. So, it shows how much you could theoretically borrow, but it’s no guarantee—which means these buyers will have to get officially approved for a loan later on and cross their fingers it works out.

Pre-approval, on the other hand, means the lender has already done its due diligence and is willing to loan you the money. Plus, you’ve got an official letter from your lender saying so that will speak volumes to a seller.

How pre-approval helps you buy a home

When sellers accept an offer, they want the deal to go through. However, if the buyer isn’t pre-approved for a loan, this can put the whole deal in jeopardy—because if the loan doesn’t get approved, the buyer will likely be unable to follow through, says Chantay Bridges with TruLine Realty in Los Angeles.

A pre-approval provides that extra measure of security to a seller that you are both willing and able to buy the house. As a result, sellers will likely pick you as a buyer over someone without pre-approval since you’re a sure thing, and they won’t have to hold their breath that the deal might not go through.

Bottom line: While pre-approval is a pain, you’ll have to pony up all that paperwork sooner or later anyway. Why not do it on the early side and get a head start on the competition and shop for your dream home with confidence?

    User Review

“Even thought I’m not a green horn, I was lost the first time I used Win 8 and was more than happy to get the help of “Start Menu 8” which saves me time and allows me not to change my habits too much. In addition I had once a small issue with it and couldn’t solve it by myself, so I wrote to the IObit support team without many hopes…. Wrong assumption…. They answered quickly and gave me the solution to my problem in no time! Since, I’m even more a fan of IObit and looking forward for their next release.”

“Since I started using Start Menu 8, I have had NO issues with the start menu.”

“As a technology consultant and application developer, I rely on virtualization software a lot. I like to create a new virtual machine for each of my projects. This way I can keep the machine clutter free; and only install the tools I need for that project. As I do not like the Metro screen in Windows 8, I like to use a start menu replacement solution to get my Windows 7 look and feel back. I have struggled for the last few years with several different solutions, both paid and free. Sometimes they work well, sometimes not. Since I started using Start Menu 8, I have had NO issues with the start menu. It is a clean implementation and very easy to use and configure. “

    Barbara B Lebanon IN

This product is amazing! It makes my hair feel great and it does it with no residue. I recommend this
product to Patricia L Brooklyn NY

LOVE THIS STUFF. It is awesome. You should see my hair. The shine is unbelievable and I’ve had several people at
work tell me how GREAT my hair looks. I went to my sister’s birthday party and everyone raved about my hair. Love
    it!!

    Lindria D Edgewater MD

We’re not born with damaged hair.

As children, we had beautiful, baby-soft, insanely shiny hair.
But as we got older, many of us began subjecting our hair to
    a lot of abuse.

Alcohol-based hair sprays, chemical processes, blow dryers,
and styling irons all cause tremendous damage.

But don’t reach for a hair conditioner full of synthetic
    chemicals just yet.

The last thing that you need to do is add any more chemicals
to your hair! Instead, nourish it with intense nutritive
conditioners like jojoba and sesame seed oil.

Essential oils like ylang ylang, rosemary, and lavender will restore your hair’s luster and prevent premature hair loss.

But be warned – hair this gorgeous can be addictive! Don’t blame us if you get caught touching your hair all day.

    The results have been
    fantastic. My hair is
    super healthy with shine
    and very managable. This
is one of the best hair
    products I have ever
    used. It is fast, effective,
    and gets the desired
results! It is easy to use
    and leaves your hair
    really soft and nice. It
    has a pleasant scent.
    Recommend to everyone!

    Bonnie E West Harwich
    MA

This is amazing. It made my
    fine, mega-highlighted
    blonde hair so moisturized,
shiny and silky – gave me
some of the best hair days
    in recent memory! If you
    have fine hair I wouldn’t
put it on the roots – it will
weigh you down a bit. I try
    to start about 3-4 inches
    away from the scalp and
this way I still have volume,
    plus amazing shine!

    Mary K Lebanon TN

    SO awesome! It works
and you can use it once
or twice a week and the
    results last. It has
    repaired the damage I
    had. I love how smooth
    and shiny it makes my
    hair. My hair looks
    healthy, gorgeous and
    feels great!

    Ayako D Schaumburg IL

    With each successive use, I
    notice my hair gets shinier
    and easier to maintain. A
    little defnitely goes a long
way too much makes it a
bit flat so sometimes I skip a
    day or two. Much better
    than those expensive salon
    keratin treatments I used
    to get! I highly recommend
    it to people with thicker
    hair.

    Elizabeth L Manhattan
    Beach CA

    When I am done blow
drying my hair I feel like
I just left the salon and
    mind you my hair has
    never looked good blow
    dried, usually I ALSO
    need a flat iron Shiny,
    Soft, Shiny, Smooth Did
    I mention Shiny? My hair
    is long, thick, slight
    wave, color treated,
    slightly coarse. Must
    Have!

    Tara L Hackensack NJ

I used this for the first time
    and saw a huge
    improvement in how my
hair was silkier and fuller. It
is very light and easy to
    use. Never thought that
    something all nutritive could
    be this great! Thanks

    Brandie E Alta loma CA

    I was very impressed by
    the products, especially
    the leave in conditioner.
    I’ve been using this
    product for the past 3
    months and can say my
    hair is in much better
    condition. I absolutely
    love the smell and the
    way it makes my hair
    feel. Worked even better
    on my daughter’s thick,
    nutritive hair.

    Cathy E Cape Coral FL

    After using the treatment it
    was an immediate
    transformation. My hair is
    revitalized. Not only do your
    new products not make my
scalp itch, but the itching of
my scalp that I had been
    having no matter what I
    used-or didn’t use-is totally
    gone. What you say about
    not having to use harsh
    chemicals is true. Thanks

There are laws that protect the consumer but those laws are hard to find and harder to interpret. Quick Credit Clean LLC will provide you with our knowledge and experience to make these laws work for you instead of against you .

It’s unfortunate but major companies are aware that the average consumer cannot interpret these laws and they are more than happy to use this to their advantage.

What makes Quick Credit Clean LLC different?

    • Our system is a collaboration between the client ourselves. Working together ensures a much greater result.
    • Every client’s file is handled personally and “in-house” – this means no Outsourcing or breakdowns in communication. Again, increasing effectiveness.
    • Our process is completed within 45 to 180 days – NOT 18 months or more.
    • Our consultation/evaluation is always free – If we cannot help we would rather give you free advice and hope you’ll send us someone that does need our services.
    • Every client is given a “credit education” guide in an understandable format.

    Can “accurate” information be removed?

Most consumers ( and professionals ) view credit daily without the correct information to interpret what is or isn’t truly accurate; Because of this the wrong call for accuracy is made every day. Once the accounts are viewed by someone that knows the ins – outs of the credit reporting system; we find that many of those harmful account are not accurate at all. Once these errors removed you really get to see you actual credit worthiness!

Every day someone tells us an account is accurate – every day we prove why it’s not. Having the knowledge to determine the difference between accurate and inaccurate combined with the essentials for maximum scoring are the keys to making huge score gains. They also make sure big companies can t bully you into paying too much interest.

Under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, credit repair companies cannot require you to pay until they have completed the services they have promised. The company doesn’t tell you your rights and what you can do for yourself for free. The company recommends that you do not contact any of the three major national credit reporting companies directly. The company tells you they can get rid of most or all the negative credit information in your credit report, even if that information is accurate and current. The company suggests that you try to invent a new credit identity and then, a new credit report by applying for an Employer Identification Number to use instead of your Social Security number. The company advises you to dispute all the information in your credit report, regardless of its accuracy or timeliness. If you follow illegal advice and commit fraud, you may find yourself in legal hot water, too: It s a federal crime to lie on a loan or credit application, to misrepresent your Social Security number, and to obtain an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service under false pretenses. You could be charged and prosecuted for mail or wire fraud if you use the mail, telephone, or Internet to apply for credit and provide false information. Your Rights Regarding Credit Repair No one can legally remove accurate and timely negative information from a credit report. The law allows you to ask for an investigation of information in your file that you dispute as inaccurate or incomplete. There is no charge for this. Some people hire a company to investigate on their behalf, but anything a credit repair clinic can do legally, you can do for yourself at little or no cost. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA): You re entitled to a free report if a company takes adverse action against you, like denying your application for credit, insurance, or employment.

Get the Best Hotel Rate #hotels #in #paris

#how to get the best hotel deals

    #

While even cars have gone the way of reliable sticker prices, hotel accommodations remain a haggler’s game, with arcane and confusing rules and terminology that seem aimed to sneak dollars out of your pocket even when you think you’re making out well. Take the term “corporate rate,” for instance.

Hotels sometimes even have what is called a “fallback” rate for travelers who are resisting the quoted rate.

    3. Book by price, not by property.
If you care less about a specific hotel than getting the cheapest deal, you may want to consider choosing your own price on Priceline or shopping the anonymous (but deeply discounted) hotel inventory on Hotwire. On these sites you often won’t know which hotel you’re staying at until it’s booked, but you can request the general location and quality (three-star, four-star, etc.) — and you could save a significant amount of money over other booking sites.

    4. Call the hotel directly.
Many times specials are offered at the hotel that can’t be submitted through the 1-800 central reservations system.

If you’re staying at a property that serves mostly business travelers, you may find great weekend deals, while B & B’s and other leisure properties tend to have lower rates midweek. On a broader scale, know when the peak seasons to visit your destination are — such as wintertime in the Caribbean or summertime in Europe.

If you’re looking for both airfare and hotels, shop around and see if it’s worth booking the two together as a package deal. You may not have as many hotel choices as you would if you were booking your lodging separately, but the discounts could be worth the lack of flexibility.

    8. Consider a private sale.
Private sale sites Jetsetter.com and TabletHotels.com/privatesale/ offer exclusive deals on hotels and resorts, but you must be a member to access them, and most sales don’t last very long. If you’re open-minded about where you want to go and when, these sites can help you land deep discounts at upscale properties.

    9. Look beyond the big hotels.
If you’re seeing high rates at big chain hotels, consider some alternatives. These could include bed and breakfasts. vacation rentals. hostels or independently owned small hotels — most of which can’t be found on big booking engines. For advice on how to research these, see our guide to finding hidden hotels .

    10. Know the full cost.
You may think you’ve found a great deal, but keep in mind that the base rate isn’t the only thing that will determine your total bill. Be sure to ask what taxes, resort fees, parking costs, energy surcharges, and other odds and ends will apply to your final tally. Even if one hotel has a lower base rate, it may end up being a more expensive option once all the extras are added in. For more information, see Hidden Hotel Fees .

    11. Keep an eye on your credit card statements.
Occasionally, buried in all that junk stuffed in with your credit card statement are vouchers or guarantees for good hotel rates offered in conjunction with your credit card company. Typically, you have to request a specific rate code, included in the “literature,” and reserve and pay for the room with that particular credit card (or one issued by the same bank or company).

    12. Use coupon and voucher books.
The number of discount coupon and voucher companies, both in print and on the Internet, is almost mind-boggling. Everywhere you look, you can tear off, cut out, download, print out or merely mention a discount coupon rate, and you can save on just about every aspect of travel. Do a Web search for “coupons” for your destination or hotel chain for some links to local and online coupon distributors.

In the midst of this abundance, one discount book stands head and shoulders above the rest: Entertainment Books published by Entertainment Publications. The great majority of discounts available come in at half price, whether they’re two-for-one meals or movies, or straight 50 percent discounts on hotel rooms. The company publishes books annually for dozens of major U.S. and Canadian destinations. They can be purchased online for $25 to $50.

    13. Follow up.
Once you’ve booked your hotel, don’t just rest on your laurels. Call back or check online in another month or so and see whether rates have gone down. If they have, cancel your booking and rebook your stay at the lower rate. (Read the hotel’s cancellation policy carefully before doing so to make sure you won’t have to pay any penalties.)

    14. Use your points.
Can’t find the rate you want? Try paying with points instead. If you belong to a hotel’s loyalty program and have accumulated enough reward points, you can often use them to pay for your room (or for an upgrade to a better class of room).

    15. Leave your bags in the car.
Planning to negotiate when you arrive? Don’t haul a huge piece of luggage into the lobby and then tell the agent that you’d just as soon go elsewhere if they can’t bring their rates down. You’ll look tired, hassled, sick of lugging bags and, to a shrewd hotel clerk, ready to pay handsomely to unpack that suitcase.
