  • The Good News Club: Endangering Children #deserve #to #die, #good #news #club

    #

    Intrinsic Dignity

Every year, thousands of public elementary school children bring flyers and permission slips home to their parents, seeking to take part in an after-school Good News Club inside one of over 4000 public elementary schools in America. The flyers promise an hour or more of fun and Bible-centered character and moral education. Because the club takes place on public school grounds, parents assume their children will be safe and unharmed. But the snacks, games, prizes, songs, and fun activities mask a dark message of shame and fear indoctrination. The Good News Club curriculum is filled with over 5000 references to sin and thousands more to obedience, punishment, and Hell. It stresses Old Testament narratives of a retributive God who must punish sin, warns children that they will suffer an eternity in Hell if they refuse to believe, and stresses complete obedience as the supreme value. Meanwhile, salutary themes such as the Golden Rule are almost entirely absent from the curriculum. As documented in this site s sections on Shame and Hell and individual lesson reviews. Good News Club tells children as young as preschoolers that they have dark and sinful hearts, were born that way, and deserve to die and go to Hell. The Club prominently advertises its meetings to public school children in colorful take- home flyers, on posters hung in school hallways and on school bulletin boards, and on signs placed on the school frontage sidewalk during club meetings. Students are encouraged to wear Good News Club T-shirts during class and rewarded with candies and other prizes for bringing classmates to the Club. The Club delivers its dark gospel message, immediately after the closing bell, to young 4-12 year-old children in public school classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and libraries. The Good News Club s dark gospel, reinforced often enough, robs children of the innocence and enjoyment of childhood, replacing them with a negative self image, preoccupation with sin, fear of Hell, and aversion to critical thinking. Click on the thumbnails to the right to read various modern authors remarkably consistent recollections about what they learned at Good News Clubs growing up. Children should not be ashamed of themselves, intimidated from critical thinking, or inculcated with divisive stereotypes. Encourage public school districts to update their facility use policies to protect children from psychological and emotional maltreatment and manipulation.

    Contact Referral

    Referring Someone to Hospice

Anyone can call to request a meeting about hospice care. The patient, their physician, a family member or a friend may initiate hospice services by calling our office (contact information below). Once a referral has been made, our Admissions Director schedules a visit to meet the patient and their family to answer questions and provide further information. Following this visit, a hospice nurse meets with the patient and family to assess their needs and develop a personalized plan. When hospice patients choose to accept treatment, they recognize that hospice care is centered on symptom management rather than cure. All patients remain under the care of an attending physician who gives consent to hospice services and receive additional support through a hospice medical director, RN, medical social worker, hospice aide, volunteers and chaplain, if desired. The most important part of the team is the patient and his/her family and caregivers who determine the care plan.

My sump pump went out in the middle of the night. I emailed and called APP and was able
to reach someone and they scheduled an appointment for first thing in the morning. That morning, they
were there as soon as they could pick up a sump pump and took care of everything before the basement
    completely flooded.

    Tim G.

Very Professional and Good Quality work. I am very satisfied with the work they did for me and I will like
to use them for future projects.

    Vipul B.

Recently, I had the pleasure of having two of your employees working in my home. They were wonderful, so I wanted to let you know how pleased I am! Dave did all the plumbing work, but the company supplying all the parts only sent part of what Dave needed, so he had to make a new plan. Even though it put him behind, he didn’t get upset. He told me exactly what to buy and then finished the job. Kudos!

In the middle of all this, the hot water heater sprung a leak! Dennis arrived and made short work of a messy situation. He had to work in a cramped area and around construction-with no complaints. He had to cut a larger hole in the incomplete drywall to reach the shut off valve. That was just before the cold weather hit. What I didn’t realize was that a fresh air vent pipe had been boxed in with the water pipe (and no insulation between them). Without that larger hole my pipes would have frozen. I’m sure it saved me thousands of dollars in repairs. I am so grateful!

This was pretty wordy, but I wanted you to know how professional and patient two of your plumbers are. They seemed perfect to me.

Which Hospice companies are Good to work for?

Maybe it’s already been mentioned but it might be good to look at nonprofit hospice companies. They tend to be less focused on money and have more services for the patient/family.

That’s not always the case, though. Where I live, the not for profit hospice is more concerned with their public image than pt. care. I work for a for profit hospice and our administration is very concerned with pt. care. heartbeat

I don’t know that I totally agree with the profit vs non-profit and that is why I did not mention it in my last post. For-profit companies will tell you that the only difference between them and NFP companies is that the NFP companies do not have to pay taxes into the community. We have 7 competing hospices in the area that I am no more impressed by the NFP agencies than the FP’s. There is an older, national NFP here in the area and I interviewed with them at one time–wages were 80% of the market average here in the area and the benefits were horrible(the excuse was they were a NFP and couldn’t afford to pay anymore)–this company is also known for working their nursing staff into the ground (they are leaving in droves right now) and not accepting the expensive patients . They also have an inpatient unit that several in the community feel is misused to substitute for continuous care and our company has taken several of their patients that have wanted to stay at home for end of life care as they were informed that their patients are typically transferred to their inpatient center to die). As I have said, there are good and bad FP ‘s and NFP’s. If I would suggest anything to look at, it would be wheter a company is locally owned or nationally owned. Nationally owned companies are paying an entire staff at the top of the chain and the money has to come form somewhere (sometimes shows up in higher nursing caseloads or poor patient suppiles). Not that all of them are bad–some locally owned companies are started by people with intentions other than patient care. The important thing is to ask the right questions and take your time selecting the right company. I would continue to insist that your best resources are speaking with current and previous employees of the company you are considering working for. I say this because once you are trained and in a position, it becomes harder to leave if you find out the company misrepresented itself as most of this that are in this profession struggle with knowing that when we leave, there will be even less people to care for the patients.

I work for a nonprofit, part of a larger religious nonprofit. The downside is that being under senior services-which is traditionally low paid, I think we are way underpaid. Hospice should be advanced home health and pay for the years of general nursing experience you come with.

But the plus is that the focus is on compassionate care, for the most part. We would not turn down a patient with financial needs, we have resources to help those in dire need of basic comforts. Our nurses are not pushed to meet financial goals. Now, they are overworked because we are too short staffed, too short staffed because we are not paid well enough to attract the experience we need, but there are measures being taken to address those things. At least I feel that there is interest in improving our org and fundamentally many good people. We are currently changing leadership and I am hoping that they hire an outsider with strong leadership skills to both corral some of the internal management issues and better advocate for us.

Also, our org has huge hiring bonuses that can always be shared, so if looking in the NW, contact me!:wink2:

Yes Yes Yes. People, there is a nursing shortage! Good help is hard to find. Believe me when I tell you that life is too short to be working in a position or job that you don’t enjoy. If you are true of heart and want to consider hospice nursing a profession, take the time to investigate the company and the position–don’t be afraid to ask questions–you have the right to get up every day to go into a postion that is rewarding (not that some days won’t be difficult) and just as much right to be able to balance home and work and to go to bed at the end of the day with a clear conscience.

    Hi,
I will be graduating as an RN in May 2010. I have thought of being in Hospice for years. I am training as a hospice volunteer right now.
    I will be 50 when I graduate.
Florida is looking real good with the price of home heating fuel in New England. Does anyone have information on Tidewell Hospice and Palliative care in the Sarasota area? Anywhere in Florida would be interesting. not knowing much about the state except that it is warmer than here!

Is it possible for a new RN to get into hospice without hospital training? Would oncology by a suitable specialty to start with? I think I would enjoy home care eventually. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    MCAT Test Scores
    and Medical School Requirements

New MCAT scoring and GPAs required by US medical schools and Canadian medical schools are provided in this website. To guide you in your journey to medical school, this page will provide you with helpful information such as new MCAT test scores range (good, high and highest scores), scores percentiles, your chance of medical school admission, and advice on how to attain a high MCAT score.

How the new MCAT is scored

The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is a prerequisite for admission to nearly all the medical schools in North America. This is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in hundreds of testing centers in the United States, Canada and around the world.

In 2015, over 64,000 premed applicants to American and Canadian medical schools submitted their MCAT test results. While the actual weight given to MCAT scores in the admissions process varies from school to school, often they are regarded in a similar manner to your premed GPA (i.e. your academic standing).

The MCAT has four sections, namely; (1) Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; (2) Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; (3) Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior; and (4) Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills.

Each section is scored from a low of 118 to a high of 132 while the midpoint is 125. The total score results from a combination of the four sections’ scores. Total score range is from 472 to 528, with a midpoint of 500.

The MCAT score report that you will receive would reflect the scores’ percentiles, confidence bands that show your true score range, and score profiles that reflect your strengths and weaknesses. For your guide on new MCAT scores, click here: MCAT Score Report .

MCAT scores are released 30 to 35 days after the exam. Click here: MCAT Score Reporting System

    Average MCAT Test Scores

To look at average MCAT scores and GPA, click here: US Medical Schools MCAT Scores and Canadian Medical Schools MCAT Scores

Note: ‘Average MCAT score’ refers to the average of students who were accepted to medical school. Apart from your MCAT score, your GPA and non-academic factors like your personal statement and/or autobiographical material, letters of reference, and the medical school interview influence your chance of getting accepted to medical school.

    * The percentage of students whose scores were lower than yours. Percentile ranks are not used as criteria for medical school admissions. The scaled score is what matters for medical school admissions. Every year, the AAMC releases MCAT score percentiles which gives exam takers an idea on how they fared compared to others who took the exam. For MCAT scores percentiles for past MCAT test dates, click here: MCAT Research and Data

Old and New MCAT Scores Accepted by Medical Schools

MCAT scores that date back two or three years are accepted by most medical schools. Although the MCAT has changed in 2015, some medical schools will accept the old MCAT scores until the 2018 application cycle, while some require the new MCAT score for the 2017 application cycle. Winston Salem State University – page 2

I am looking at the accelerated program through WSSU as well. So far I’m getting the impression that they might not be as organized or as interested in speaking with potential students as UNC/CH or Emory, for example. I had appointments to speak with people at those schools within a week of my inquiry. At WSSU they are offering me an appointment 4 weeks down the road.

I am moving back to NC this summer and am trying to decide between Durham (Duke or UNC/CH options) or Winston-Salem (anything other than WSSU. anyone knows of?)

Either way I go, I’ll have 2 semesters of the pre-reqs to complete at the community college. As a 45 yr old I would like to choose a city where I think I could potentially stay and call home, and make it work rather than considering moving again in another year. I love everything about W-S except for the reservations I currently have about WSSU. Like the school options in Durham, but not the cost of living (for UNC at least.)

How many students DO apply to the WSSU program? Is it ridiculously difficult to get into?

If you have a high previous GPA say 3.3 or higher, you should look into UNC Greensboro’s nursing program. I just graduated. It is an excellent school. In fact, it was one of the three schools selected nationally by the National League of Nursing as a center of nursing education excellence.

The school is small enough for a personal touch and large enough to have resourses. UNCG graduates are highly regarded and sought after by all the area hospitals. In short, we have an excellent local, state and national reputation. UNCG has an average NCLEX 1st test pass rate around 92% and 100% pass rate for the 8% who took it the 2nd time. Just for reference, UNCG averages graduating about 90 students. So 7 out of 90 not passing the first time isn’t to bad.

That being said, admissions is tough. It depends mostly on GPA, and then on a pre-nursing class with lab that is used as a semester long interview. If your GPA is less than 3.0 lifetime, there is no reason to even apply. If you want a realistic chance of getting in, then 3.5 is the real goal.If you do poorly in NUR210/220 or get a bad reference from clinical faculty you will not get in. Also, grades in classes like biology, chemistry, micro, and A P need to be high, straight A’s if possible.

    Hope all the info helps.

Home Security Systems: A Good Investment

There is no better investment than the one that protects your family and your home from those that would break into your home and do harm. Home security systems are a quality, worthy investment if they are chosen with care and properly installed and maintained. The presence of a home security system is often enough to deter burglars against invading the home. Burglars are not inclined to work hard to steal. With the many types of home security systems on the market these days, there are several things a homeowner should consider when giving thoughts to purchasing one for your home.

Before deciding on which one of the many home security systems to purchase and have installed in your home, it is a good idea to sit down and make a comprehensive list of your thoughts about pros and cons and what you feel is needed in a good home security system. Do a bit of research into typical home security systems and what they offer in order to see what is available as you make this list. Once you have figured out what details you wish to have in a customized home security system, then the shopping part of things can begin.

Home security systems have quite a wide range in pricing. Part of your research should include figuring out what options are available in what price range of home security systems. It is a good idea to have a set budget in mind to avoid over spending and causing additional stress on the finances and relationships. A set budget will allow you to consider the options carefully and include only those home security systems options that will suit the needs of your family and your home. Budgeting keeps the frame of reference of spending fresh in mind.

When shopping for home security system specifications and options, be sure to include a home alarm with motion sensors that cover the inside of the home as well as perimeter detectors that protect the windows and doors. This is often the first line of defence in home security. Outdoor motion sensors and security light will set off alerts that there is an intruder trying to gain entry into your home. Often burglars will run at the first sign of any sensor activation. Alarm sensors should ideally be applied liberally to all rooms, windows and doors on the street level of the house. Obviously, a larger home will need a larger amount of sensors to cover all the bases adequately. Lastly, be sure the home security systems will alert the authorities for you. This will enable you and your family to be away from home knowing that the police would be alerted in the event of a burglary.

What Is a Good Return on Your Investments?

Reasonable Return Expectations Can Help You From Taking on Too Much Risk

New investors often don’t know what a good rate of return is on a well-constructed long-term portfolio. The answer depends on how the portfolio is constructed and varies by asset class. Jeffrey Coolidge/Getty Images

    Updated June 28, 2017

One of the main reasons new investors lose money is because they chase after unrealistic rates of return on their investments, whether they are buying stocks. bonds. mutual funds. real estate. or some other asset class. This happens due to a lack of experience. Most folks just don’t understand how compounding works. Every percentage increase in profit each year means huge increases in your ultimate wealth over time.

To provide a stark illustration, $10,000 invested at 10% for 100 years turns into $137.8 million. The same $10,000 invested at twice the rate of return, 20%, does not merely double the outcome, it turns it into $828.2 billion. It seems counter-intuitive that the difference between a 10% return and a 20% return is 6,010x as much money, but it s the nature of geometric growth.

What s a Good Rate of Return?

When it comes to answering the question, What is a good rate of return on your investments , I find myself frequently reiterating the truism that past performance is no guarantee of future results, and that even the best-structured portfolio or investment plan can result in permanent capital losses. I think about risk a lot. It s in my nature. In fact, I believe people don t think about risk enough. Things like the total decimation of the Austrian stock market upon the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany have happened, can happen, and will happen again at some point in the future.

There are no guarantees of any kind in life.

With that said, I think the only reasonable, academic position a person can take if they assume that civilization will remain relatively stable is to answer that determining a good rate of return on your investments is probably easiest if we examine the nearly 200 years of data from Ibbotson Associates, a data research firm that tracks financial market history.

It s not perfect for the reasons we just discussed, as well as several others, but it s the best we have.

To accomplish this, the first thing we need to do is strip out inflation. The reality is, investors are interested in increasing their purchasing power. That is, they don’t care about “dollars” or “yen” per se, they care about how many cheeseburgers, cars, pianos, computers, or pairs of shoes they can purchase.

When we do that and look through the data, we see the rate of return varies by asset types :

    • Gold: Typically gold hasn’t appreciated in real terms over long periods of time. Instead, it is merely a store of value that maintains its purchasing power. Decade-by-decade, though, gold can be highly volatile, going from huge highs to depressing lows in a matter of years, making it far from a safe place to store money you may need in the next few years. (To illustrate how gold itself very rarely changes in value — it is the things around gold the fluctuate — I once researched fifteen years of gold prices in various currencies on my personal blog for my own benefit.)
    • Cash: Fiat currencies are designed to depreciate in value over time. In fact, $100 in 1800 is worth only $8 today, representing a loss of 92% of value. Burying cash in coffee cans in your yard is a terrible long-term investing plan. If it manages to survive the elements, it will still be worthless given enough time.
    • Bonds: Historically, good, quality bonds tend to return 2% to 4% after inflation in normal circumstances. The riskier the bond, the higher the return investors demand.
    • Business Ownership, Including Stocks : Looking at what people expect from their business ownership, it is amazing how consistent human nature can be. The highest quality, safest, most stable dividend -paying stocks have tended to return 7% in real, inflation-adjusted returns to owners for centuries. That seems to be the figure that makes people willing to part with their money for the hope of more money tomorrow. Thus, if you live in a world of 3% inflation, you would expect a 10% rate of return (7% real return 3% inflation 10% nominal return). The riskier the business, the higher the return demanded. This explains why someone might demand a shot at double-or triple-digit returns on a start-up due to the fact the risk of failure and even total wipe-out are much higher. To learn more about this topic, read Components of an Investor s Required Rate of Return .
    • Real Estate : Without using any debt, real estate return demands from investors mirror those of business ownership and stocks. The real rate of return for good, non-leveraged properties has been roughly 7% after inflation. Since we have gone through decades of 3% inflation, over the past 20 years, that figure seems to have stabilized at 10%. Riskier projects require higher rates of return. Plus, real estate investors are known for using mortgages, which are a form of leverage, to increase the return on their investment. The present low-interest rate environment has resulted in some significant deviations in recent years, with investors accepting cap rates that are substantially below what many long-term investors might consider reasonable.

    Keep Your Expectations Reasonable

There are some takeaway lessons from this. If you re a new investor and you expect to earn, say, 15% or 20% compounded on your blue chip stock investments over decades, you are delusional. It s not going to happen.

That might sound harsh, but it s important that you understand: Anyone who promises returns like that is taking advantage of your greed and lack of experience. Basing your financial foundation on bad assumptions means you will either do something stupid by overreaching in risky assets, or arrive at your retirement with far less money than you anticipated. Neither is a good outcome, so keep your return assumptions conservative and you should have a much less stressful investing experience.

What makes talking about a good rate of return even more confusing for inexperienced investors is that these historical rates of return — which, again, are not guaranteed to repeat themselves! — were not smooth, upward trajectories. If you were an equity investor over this period, you suffered sometimes jaw-dropping, heart-pounding losses in quoted market valuation, many of which lasted for years. It s the nature of dynamic free market capitalism. But over the long-term, these are the rates of return that investors have historically seen.

The Balance does not provide tax, investment, or financial services and advice. The information is being presented without consideration of the investment objectives, risk tolerance or financial circumstances of any specific investor and might not be suitable for all investors. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Investing involves risk including the possible loss of principal.

    Fire Science Degree Programs

    FIRE SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMS

Firefighters used to fight fires. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, during the past 35 years, the number of fires in the United States has fallen by more than 40%.According to the Boston Globe, for example, Boston city records show a decrease in major fires from 417 in 1975 to just 40 in 2012. Better building codes, automatic sprinkler systems, smoke alarms, and increased public awareness of safety measures have all contributed to the decrease.

So, while firefighters certainly still fight fires, they also focus on public education, fire inspections, and other forms of community outreach to foster fire prevention. In addition, many firefighters are trained EMTs or paramedics. Fighting actual fires has also become more complex, and special units of firefighters are trained to handle everything from hazardous materials incidents to rescuing victims from building collapses.

As the field has changed, it’s become more and more professional. While a high school diploma is often still the minimum requirement to become a firefighter, many aspiring firefighters also pursue advanced degrees, such as associates, bachelors or masters degrees in fire science. They find having a degree is beneficial in this highly competitive field.

In June 2013, the Las Vegas Fire Department received 500 online applications in just 24 minutes for 24 fire trainee job openings. If yours is one of 500 or more resumes being considered, you’re going to need to stand out in some way. Job candidates with more than a high school education will have an advantage. It’s not unusual today for firefighters to have at least a two-year degree. A degree in fire science opens the door to careers in fire prevention, fire safety, fire response, and fire investigation.

Fire science degrees are also valuable to those already working in the field as firefighters, as they afford opportunities for advancement. With a combination of experience and education, firefighters can move into positions such as fire inspector and fire investigator.

And, if you aspire to a leadership position such as being a fire chief or an emergency services director, you will likely need a master’s degree.

    Types of Degree Programs

Fire science degrees can be general or specific to a fire science specialty, such as fire prevention, fire suppression, or fire services leadership. They can be tailored to the entry-level firefighter or to those with experience who want to advance their careers. Options include:

Certificates. Certificates are not degrees, per se, but rather a type of credential that indicates you’ve had training in a particular area, such as fire inspection or arson investigation. Certificates are generally short courses that take less than one year to complete, and are open to high school graduates.

Associate Degrees. Associate degree programs are offered by community colleges and typically take two years of full-time study to complete. You must have a high school diploma to enroll in an associate degree program. Fire science associate degrees prepare students for entry-level firefighting positions.

Bachelor’s Degrees. A bachelor’s degree in fire science will generally take four years of full-time study. While these degrees have been traditionally sought by current firefighters seeking advancement, more and more entry-level candidates are pursuing bachelor’s degrees as a competitive advantage to getting hired.

Master’s Degrees. Master’s degrees are considered terminal degrees – the most advanced degree you can obtain – in the field of fire science. They take two years of full-time work, although many pursue their master’s degrees on a part-time basis. Firefighters interested in becoming chiefs or holding other high-level leadership positions should consider obtaining a master’s degree.

It’s important to note that a certificate or degree does not take the place of any additional training required by municipal fire departments. Entry-level firefighters, whether they have a degree or not, must typically complete about 600 hours of training over the course of 12 to 14 weeks at a fire academy designated by their hiring fire department.

    Online Fire Science Degree Options

There are a variety of options for obtaining an online fire science degree. Since this is a hands-on training field, however, degrees that are delivered fully online tend to focus on administration and policy topics and are of the most value to working fire service professionals who’ve already had field training. Hybrid programs, where some of the content is learned online and some in person, are good options for those without experience. Firefighters living in remote areas without access to a local campus are great candidates for online learning, as are older firefighters looking for a career change within the industry.

Associate degree coursework typically includes classroom and hands-on training, and even internships. Students become familiar with firefighting equipment and learn how to maintain it. Field training can include fighting actual, albeit controlled, fires and working alongside firefighting professionals in a fire station.

In addition to general education classes, typical courses include:

    • Fire Behavior and Combustion
    • Rescue Procedures
    • Fire Extinguishment Basics
    • EMT Basics
    • Chemistry of Fire Science
    • Fire Codes and Laws

Fire Science majors at the bachelor’s level may also combine classroom study with field training and/or an internship. They study many aspects of the fire service profession, such as fire behavior, fire extinguishment, rescue procedures, and environmental policy. Common courses, in addition to general education classes, include:

    • Fire Prevention
    • Emergency Management
    • Fire Investigation
    • Fire Control
    • Fire Chemistry and Physics
    • Hazardous Materials Management
    • Disaster and Fire Defense Planning

Interested in volunteering? Then give our Volunteer Services Coordinator, Sue Beckett a call on 01244 566732 and come in for a cup of tea and a chat!

Volunteers have been working at the hospice since we opened our doors 25 years ago. During that time the number of volunteers supporting the hospice has steadily grown and we now have almost 300 people contributing their time in so many different ways.

The value of our volunteers goes way beyond a financial saving as they bring with them a wealth of experience from all types of backgrounds and careers.

Our volunteers work in four main areas:

    Patient Facing and support

These are extremely varied with some of our volunteers working closely with patients and others using their skills and experience in areas such as gardening, flower arranging and decorating. The first place that anybody is likely to have contact with the Hospice is at our Reception and this is entirely staffed by volunteers.

    Bereavement Support

Some people who are bereaved can struggle to adjust, and our volunteer befrienders and counsellors offer emotional support when it is needed the most.

    Retail

All of our shops have volunteer shop assistants and at the warehouse our volunteers sort donated goods ready for delivery to the shops and some go out in the hospice vans to deliver and collect furniture in the local area.

    Fundraising Department

There are so many ways to get involved with fundraising for the hospice and contrary to popular belief it doesn’t all involve collecting money! There are events running all year long and at these events we often need Marshals, people to take care of Registration Desks or Refreshment tables, run a stall, help to set up and clear away. This is a great opportunity for volunteers who can’t commit to a regular time each week but can help out on occasion, usually evenings and weekends.

    Roles

Please click on the list of volunteer roles below to find out more and complete the application.

If you’d like more information on any of the roles then please call our Volunteer Coordinator on 01244 851091.

    Available Roles

    Shop Assistant

    Monday to Saturday 9a.m – 1p.m or 1p.m – 5p.m

At the shop you will be part of a fun and vibrant team playing a key part in making our customers feel welcome and keeping the shop well stocked and organised. You may also man the till and accept donations. We have bright and airy shops on Northgate Street in Chester, Faulkner Street in Hoole, Sutton Way and Overpool Road in Ellesmere Port and Neston High Street in Neston.

    Warehouse Assistant

Monday to Friday – Flexible Times

In this role you will be very active sorting donated stock and ensuring it is fit for sale. You will also help to fulfil orders from the shops ready for delivery. A good knowledge of clothing brands is very helpful although not essential. The Hospice warehouse is located within Big Storage on Sealand Road in Chester and serves all of our shops.

    Drivers Mate

Monday to Friday – Flexible Times

Helping out on our van is a great role if you like to get out and about meeting people and keeping busy. During your shift you will partner a driver collecting goods from people’s houses as well as delivering and collecting stock for our shops. This is a very active role and will involve a lot of lifting.

    Warehouse Showroom

Monday to Friday – Flexible Times

This role is based at the Hospice warehouse you will be serving customers in the furniture showroom and assisting with admin tasks such as booking collection of donations, organising the driver rotas and creating signage.

    Gardener

    Flexible days and times

If you can tell a plant from a weed and would like to help maintain the beauty of our gardens this role could be ideal for you. Under the initial guidance of our Maintenance Coordinator you will learn the layout of the gardens and the areas where you can help. After this you would be free to give any time you can to do some gardening in our beautiful grounds.

    Outdoor Help

    Flexible days and times

Throughout the year there are several jobs that could use a capable pair of hands. Some examples of where volunteers have helped over the past year include; sweeping up leaves in Autumn, putting up the Christmas trees, turning the compost, clearing moss from brick walls and mowing the grass.

    Flower Arranger

    Monday to Sunday Afternoons

If you have ever visited the Hospice you may have noticed the stunning floral displays on show around the building. If you would like to join the team that creates these and have previous experience creating displays this would be an ideal role for you. During your session you would work with the flowers that have been donated to create new displays, tidy up existing displays and water house plants. Some previous experience is preferred.

    Fundraising Assistant

    Flexible days and times

If you would like to be involved in raising the funds necessary to run the Hospice the fundraising team would love you to join them. This role can be as active or as simple as you like and contrary to popular believe it very rarely involves shaking a can! Everyone who volunteers for the Hospice can also join in with fundraising events at any time as you will receive emails detailing help needed.

    Receptionist

    Monday to Friday 9a.m – 1p.m or 1p.m – 5p.m

On the reception desk volunteers work in pairs and are the first point of contact for people calling or visiting the Hospice. You will need to have a professional telephone manner and learn to transfer calls to the appropriate department. At times you will take messages and ensure that they are forwarded to the right person. When visitors arrive you will ask them to sign in and contact the correct department to announce their arrival and offer them a drink if they have to wait a while. The reception has a small selection of goods for sale for which you may process the sales through the till.

    Shopper

    Daily in the morning

As a shopper you will receive a phone call from a receptionist between 10.30 and 11a.m with a list of the day’s requirements from the ward and day care patients. This list will usually include daily papers, sweets and pop. You can then call at your local shops to purchase the goods before bringing them to the Hospice before midday. At the Hospice you will deliver the goods to the patients and they will reimburse your money. Sometimes patients enjoy a chat as you deliver their goods so feel free to pull up a chair for a good conversation.

    Befriender

    Flexible days and times

As a befriender you will offer a listening ear to bereaved individuals in their own home, and you may also help out at the Mollington Drop-in group. This is rewarding work supporting people who may be in some distress, and you will be offered regular supervision and on-going training.

    Counsellor

    Flexible days and times

If you are a qualified counsellor looking to increase your hours, or a counsellor in training looking for a placement, you can apply to join our team of volunteer counsellors. Bereavement is often the reason behind the referral, but the reasons behind the distress are varied, so this is interesting and rewarding work. You will receive in-house supervision and regular CPD opportunities.

Near as good as ours – Review of Portarlington Beach Motel #motels

    #portarlington beach motel

    #

I was forced to stay at the Portarlington Beach Motel last year due to a work conference (work had pre-booked the accommodation) and unfortunately my stay doesn’t reflect what others have said.

I cannot comment on the reception or staff as we were given our keys by our manager when we arrived.

The room itself was rather unappealing. Upon arrival I had to surface spray the entire kitchen area due to an ant infestation. I noticed that the ants were attracted to some sticky substance that wasn’t cleaned off of the bench from the last guest which inevitably attracted the insects.

The aircon didn’t have a remote control so I needed to stand on a chair to switch it on and off at the wall. The toilet ran the entire night which was quite annoying when I was trying to sleep. The tv also didn’t have a remote so I had to change the station manually. The tv reception was also poor. The bed wasn’t too bad and the location was quiet however I was woken during the night by some unruly guests banging on my window.

The location of the hotel is good, on the main road and close to the beach. The rooms are a good size also. I haven’t been back to Portarlington since but I would probably consider another place to stay next time.

Krystle C, Manager at Portarlington Beach Motel, responded to this review

Thank you for your honest review, I would just like to point out that from the information given in your review we have deduced that the time of your stay was at least 18 months ago. The motel has been bought by new owners and is now run by new management since then.
The motel has undergone a huge amout of upgrading. In the rooms alone all the TV’s replaced by big flatscreen TV’s, carpets are all new, mattresses all replaced, a VERY high quality of cleanliness which we as managers personally oversee and partake in and most of our airconditioners have been replaced with remote controlled units and those that aren’t have a switch at ground level (no one is to stand on the furniture to access the airconditioners).
The outside of the motel has been repainted, the pool has been fixed up and solar heating installed, a new bbq put in for guests use and newly purchased outdoor furniture to relax with.
We hope you will be able to visit again in the near future to experience the improvements for yourself.
    Kind regards,
    Krystle Connor and Gregory Walshaw

Great for what it is! And very roomy too!

My partner and I stayed here on a saturday night when we decided we wanted a boozy night away together. We thought we’d stay somewhere within walking distance of the pub so we could get back easily. We were pleasantly surprised. Had a massive room (number 7) with a large kitchenette, great bathroom, a second bedroom with a bunk bed (not needed for us but fabulous for kids) large flat screen tv on the wall, small round dining table, large outdoor sitting area, pool just out the front door, very comfy bed, lollies in a bowl and fabulous service from the staff. This place isn’t luxurious by any means but great, comfortable, spacious and clean. Perfect for a quiet escape and well priced! And I think would be well suited to a small family, friends or a few nights getaway for couples. Highly recommended if you’re in need of a comfortable and affordable place to stay in the area.

Our staff is trained in the Habilitation approach to dementia care using the “Caring for People with Alzheimer’s Disease” program created by the Alzheimer’s Association/ MANH Chapter.

Good Shepherd Community Care is one of the most trusted health care organizations in Greater Boston focusing on hospice and palliative care. Founded as Hospice of the Good Shepherd in 1978, we are the original Massachusetts hospice. After decades of caring for our community, we continue to remain an independent, not-for-profit, non-sectarian organization.

We have long been aware of the profound and unique needs of people facing the final stage of life – their own, or that of a loved one. Throughout the years, members of the community have come to see us as an important resource as they navigate this transition. At the heart of our mission is enhancing the quality of remaining life, so that those in the final stage of life can live as fully, independently, and comfortably as possible. Our programs are reflective of that mission.

Good Shepherd believes in the importance of mutual respect and acceptance and values diversity in our patients, families and caregivers, employees, volunteers, community, and partner organizations. We are committed to these values and honor the dignity of each individual through the care, support and education we provide.

“We would never have been able to care for my husband at home without this level and quality of care. I could never overstate the excellent services and support we received from every member of your team.” – Family Member

    Patients and Families

The best time to talk about hospice care is before there is an immediate need. But regardless of when you begin the process, our team will work with you to understand the unique needs and desires of the patient and their loved ones.

As a non-profit organization, we look at what we do as a calling, not a business. Throughout the Roanoke and New River valleys, our focus is solely on helping patients and their families experience as much joy and love and happiness as possible throughout this journey.

We begin by talking about not just what a patient needs, but what they want. We want to know how we can help make every moment, both big and small, better. We look after the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient, as well as those around them. And beyond medical and palliative care, we work to help patients and families have positive experiences throughout the journey, moment to moment, day to day, for as long as possible.

To begin a referral, or to set up a chat, call 540.776.0198 (Roanoke) or 540.381.3171 (NRV), or contact our admissions director Kathy Bell .
