The process for managing procurements in 5 steps

Managing project procurements and acquisitions requires the project manager to efficiently collaborate with the purchasing department on the process of planning and managing procurements. Project procurement management is a section of the Implementation Plan to determine how the ordered products necessary for producing deliverables can be delivered on time and within the allocated budget . Note that the Procurement Management section of the Implementation Plan will be necessary only for projects that have to deal with substantial buy-in of expertise or capital items. For any other projects where there is no high level of procurement expenditure it is enough to include a procurement item list and a vendors list in the project implementation plan.

Project Procurement Process

a Project Procurement Process [also called Project Procurement Management Process ] is a method for establishing relationships between an organization’s purchasing department and external suppliers to order, receive, review and approve all the procurement items necessary for project execution. The supplier relationships are managed on a contractual basis. The process aims to ensure timely delivery of the purchased items which are selected and acquired according to the specifications and requirements set up by the purchasing department and approved by the project manager.

The procurement process includes five major steps, as follows:

  • Specification. This step involves the purchasing department in communicating with the project manager to develop and approve a list of procurement items necessary for project implementation. The department must specify the approved items to external vendors.
  • Selection. This step of the project procurement process requires the department to find potential suppliers which can procure the necessary items, according to the specifications. For this purpose the department needs to set vendor selection criteria. which may include such measures as Delivery, Service Quality, Cost, and Part Performance.
  • Contracting. The department must communicate with the suppliers on delivery dates and payment conditions in order to ensure on-time delivery of the ordered items within the stated project budget. All the conditions should be listed in a procurement contract. Also a detailed delivery schedule should be negotiated with the procurers and approved by the purchasing department.
  • Control. Success of the procurement management process depends on how the purchasing department controls the delivery and payment processes. Through arranging regular meetings with the vendors, tracking delivery progress, reviewing the ordered items against the approved product specifications, and making necessary changes to the procurement contract, the department can control the process and ensure successful accomplishment.
  • Measurement. The final step of the project procurement management process refers to using a system of performance indicators and measures for assessing the effectiveness and success of the entire process. The project manager needs to set up such a system and the purchasing department needs to use it in measuring the process. Special meetings and workshops can be conducted to view KPIs, intermediate results of staged delivery, performance of procurers, adherence to product specifications, communications with suppliers, and the like. In case any deviations or gaps are revealed the department should notify the project manager and make necessary changes to the procurement plan.

Project Procurement Plan

Planning of project procurements is carried out within the procurement process and results in developing a plan. A procurement plan is a convenient tool for organizing and managing activities and tasks related to the procurement management process. A template of the plan is to be designed by the purchasing department in cooperation with the project manager. A project procurement plan should be reviewed and approved by the project manager before any supplier relationships get started.

A project procurement plan template documents:

  • Deliverables to be procured by proposed agreements/contracts.
  • Effective resource management strategies for negotiating and managing the agreements/contracts.
  • The need for staged delivery and desirability of testing the procured items before introducing them into the implementation process (this item is optional).
  • The chosen procurement method (payments, expressions of interest, request for price/quote, request for tender).
  • Key stages of the process for selecting suppliers and vendors.
  • The model of procurement funding.
  • The sample of procurement contract/agreement.
  • References to quality approvals, quality assurance and risk management.

What Is Cloud Computing? Explained In Simple Words #beginners, cloud, cloud #computing, explanation, guide, hosting, online #apps, online #storage, server, simple, tutorial, web

#

I m sure you ve heard the following two words being used extensively online in the last couple of years. Cloud Computing. The next time you read something about a service that mentions Cloud , you will immediately know what they mean by that, and what exactly cloud computing is and how does it work.

What is Cloud Computing and how does it work, explained in simple terms?

Actually, you ve been using cloud computing all this time, unless you were living in a cave somewhere, and that cave somehow didn t have an internet connection.

So let me put this in as simple terms as possible:
Cloud Computing is the ability to use the power of other computers (located somewhere else) and their software, via the Internet (or sometimes other networks), without the need to own them. They are being provided to you, as a service .

That means you don t have to go and buy some super powerful gigantic computer system and risk have it sitting there, doing nothing. By utilizing the cloud, everything is ready for you whenever you might need it. Exactly where the hardware and software is located and how it all works doesn t matter to you, as a user. It s just somewhere up in the vast cloud that the Internet represents.
Now you know one of the reasons they call it the Cloud Computing.

For example, many businesses use cloud computing as a means of remote backup solutions to store and recover their data offsite.

To illustrate the point even better, let s go over one typical example of cloud computing that you must have used before (exception are those with the cave thing from above).

Google as an example of cloud computing

What happens when you type and search something on Google?
Have you ever thought about this? Does your PC go through all that information, sorts it out for you and display all the relevant results? No, it doesn t. Otherwise, you would wait much longer for a simple results page to display. A simple PC can t process all those billions of websites in a fraction of a second, like Google does. Your PC only serves as a messenger to tell Google what you are looking for. Everything else is done by some of Google s powerful computers located somewhere, Who-Knows-Where in the world.
Now, did you ever care about how or where that comes from? Why would you, right? Exactly. That s a great example of how cloud computing is used.

At this point, I m sure you understand what cloud computing is and the basic idea behind it. If that s everything you wanted to know, you can stop here, and go enjoy your life knowing what Cloud Computing is. If you are interested in just a little tiny bit more about it, continue reading to the end (not long from here).

3 Types of Cloud Computing

1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is basically when you buy raw computing hardware to use over the net, usually servers, or online storage. You buy what you need and pay-as-you-go. The best and the most basic example of this type of cloud computing is buying a web hosting for your website. You pay monthly fee to a hosting company for the storage on their servers and to have them serve up files for your website from those servers. Another good example of someone who provides these types of cloud services would be RackSpace cloud company .

2. Software as a Service (SaaS) is a case where you use the complete software application that s running on someone else s servers. The best example of this is Google Docs. which you can use for creating and storing text documents, presentations, spreadsheets and so on

3. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is case where you create applications using web-based tools so they run on systems software and hardware provided by another company. As an example, consider a situation where you develop your own e-commerce website but have the whole thing, including the shopping cart, checkout, and payment mechanism running on a merchant s server.

That should be all you need to know to get you started.

As you can see, the idea behind cloud computing is very powerful and useful beyond measure. Especially now when you actually know what it is.

Los Angeles, California Area Travel Information

Los Angeles is a place where people can mingle with movie stars, and shop where celebrities shop. Los Angeles is also a great place to take the family vacation as many amusement parks are just a short drive away. Los Angeles is one of the must-see destinations that offers something for travelers of any age as it features year round activities and attractions. Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the most popular Los Angeles attractions and the closest theme park to the Los Angeles area. Not only is it an amusement park but Universal Studios Hollywood is also a working movie and television studio. To get a taste of the magic of movie-making, visitors should take part in the Studio Tour which gives participants a close look at how movies are made, and Jaws might even pay you a visit as well. After a long day of enjoying all that LA has to offer, be sure to relax at one of our Los Angeles Hotels.

The theme park portion of Universal Studios has some unique attractions not found at most other parks. For instance, there is a stunt show, 3D show as well as a 4D show. One of the more popular attractions at the park is Jurassic Park The Ride. Those brave enough to ride will encounter many dinosaurs and creatures from the films. When finished taking the studio tour and riding the attractions, visitors should definitely check out Universal CityWalk which is just outside the park. The CityWalk has many shops, restaurants and movie theatres and it is extremely popular at night. In addition, Disneyland is only about a 45 minute drive from Los Angeles as is Knotts Berry Farm.

After touring the world of movies at Universal Studios or exploring a great theme park, why not visit the place where stars are made? Situated northwest of Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood is home to the most famous movie theatre in the world, the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. This theater opened in 1927, and millions of movie patrons and visitors have been drawn to the theatre. Movie premieres and Hollywood parties are still held at the legendary venue. The theater is filled with exotic art from China and features a jade-green bronze roof that rises 90 feet into the air. Spectacularly lit at night, the theatre is a true Hollywood landmark.

Lesson 1: Introduction to MS Excel 2016

Excel can be used for a wide variety of purposes such as creating an address book, grocery lists, tracking expenses, creating invoices and bills, accounting, balance checkbooks and other financial accounts, as well as any other purpose that requires a spreadsheet or table.

  • Lesson 2: Navigating Excel 2016

In this lesson, we’re going to focus on the major elements of Excel 2016 and take a few minutes to become familiar with their purpose.

  • Lesson 3: Worksheets and Workbooks

Worksheets are stored in workbooks, and workbooks are the files that you actually save.

  • Lesson 4: Entering Information into MS Excel 2016

Starting to enter information is as simple as clicking on a cell in the spreadsheet and typing, but there are some things that are helpful to know – and that you can do – before you ever type that first letter or number.

  • Lesson 5: Introduction to Working with Cells, Rows, and Columns

If you want to move data from its original location and relocate it somewhere else, you must cut the data, then paste it somewhere else. You can cut or copy cells, rows, columns, or entire worksheets.

  • Lesson 6: Formatting Data and Cells

Taking the time to format a worksheet can take it from the black and white page of data and gridlines to something that looks professional and attractive.

  • Lesson 7: Formatting Rows and Columns

In Excel 2016, the width of a column is determined by how many characters that can be displayed within a cell.

  • Lesson 8: Editing Cells, Rows, Columns, and Worksheets

Excel 2016 makes creating – and editing – spreadsheets a lot easier because correcting errors is easy mess free.

  • Lesson 9: Introduction to Formulas and Calculations

If you use spreadsheets to do accounting for a business, track totals, invoice customers, or anything that requires mathematics, Excel’s ability to calculate formulas is going to save you errors and headaches.

  • Lesson 10: Working with Formulas and Functions

In Excel, a function is a predesigned formula that does a certain calculation. This can make it easier because you don’t have to construct every formula yourself.

  • Lesson 11: Maintaining Worksheets

It’s important to learn how to maintain your worksheets to help you keep on top of all the information.

  • Lesson 12: The What-If Analysis

A what-if analysis lets you explore possibilities by entering possible values into the same equation so you can see the possible outcomes in the cells of your spreadsheet.

  • Lesson 13: Adding Images and Graphics

You’ve already learned how to format a worksheet and enter information into Excel. Now we’re going to show you how to add elements such as graphics and images.

  • Lesson 14: Charts and Diagrams

Charts and diagrams are tools you can use to visually represent the data in a worksheet.

  • Lesson 15: Creating Data Lists

A data list or a database table are types of worksheets that aren’t used to calculate values, but to store information, such as names and addresses of clients or perhaps a library of books.

  • Lesson 16: Managing Data

A form is simply a dialog box that lets you display or enter information one record (or row) at a time. It can also make the information more visually appealing and easier to understand.

  • Lesson 17: Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts

A pivot table sounds more difficult and confusing than it really is. Most people say they don’t like pivot tables, or they don’t understand them. In truth, they’re not that difficult at all.

  • Lesson 18: Printing Worksheets and Workbooks

Headers appear at the top of a worksheet. Footers appear at the bottom. Both can contain page numbers, and headers often contain the title of the worksheet and perhaps the date.

  • Lesson 19: Templates

Templates are worksheets that are already designed for you.

  • Lesson 20: Protecting, Saving, and Sharing Workbooks

Add protection to worksheets so that they can’t be edited by other people. You can lock cells or an entire worksheet.

  • Additional Course Information

A guide to booking hotel rooms online

    By Andrew Sherry, USATODAY.com

The Internet has rocked the hotel business as hard as it has the airlines, exposing opaque pricing practices to the harsh light of comparison shopping. While the airlines are starting to reclaim their place on the Web, technology-challenged hoteliers are still trying to figure out how to sell rooms online without cutthroat discounting.

They’re making progress. Five of the country’s biggest hotel groups (Hilton Hotels, Hyatt Corp. Marriott International, Six Continents Hotels and Starwood Hotels) joined Pegasus Solutions in developing a discount site, Travelweb. that has been described as “the Orbitz of hotels.” Most hotels in these groups also offer best-rate guarantees for guests who book directly with them, online or or by phone.

These steps are aimed to break the grip of Expedia, Hotels.com, Travelocity and Orbitz on online hotel bookings. For the moment, though, the result is more competition — and a buyer’s market for travelers who are willing to take the time to comparison shop for hotel rooms.

USAToday.com Travel is a small player in this game. Our site combines exclusive hotel recommendations with a comprehensive hotel directory powered by World Choice Travel, a Travelocity subsidiary, and advertiser’s listings of hotel specials and deals.

Another good starting point for hotel booking is Tripadvisor ; it combines hotel reviews from guidebooks with hotel deals listings from all the major online travel agents. Particularly useful is a feature that lets travelers write their own hotel reviews.

The big e-travel sites still dominate online hotel booking, though. They allow Web users to not only make real-time reservations, but also to purchase discounted, or “net-rate” rooms that the agencies have earlier bought in bulk from hotels. Keep in mind that the net rate rooms, which afford the biggest margins, are usually the ones the turn up at the top of your search results. If you require the flexibility to cancel up to the last moment, look farther down the list to the non net-rate hotels, or consider booking directly on a hotel’s Web site.

Several of these e-travel agents sell rooms not only on their own sites, but also under other brands on affiliate sites, so a comparison shopper could actually end up searching the same database of rooms on different Web sites. To ensure variety, we’ve listed the core players below, along with a few niche sites.

Expedia. an online travel agent, offers thousands of negotiated-rate hotels to supplement those supplied by Worldspan, the global distribution system (GDS) that links it to hotel, air and car suppliers worldwide. And by combining these hotels with airfares, it can provide some competitively priced packages that are suitable for business travelers with relatively fixed itineraries. Expedia was founded by Microsoft but is now majority-owned by Barry Diller’s USA Interactive.

Hotels.com. also owned by USA Interactive, specializes in net-rate hotels, but it has reduced its cancellation fee to $10 to make the site more appealing to business travelers. In addition to its own site, HRN distributes its rooms through subsidiary TravelNow.com, and hundreds of affiliate sites. It’s ostensibly a competitor of Expedia, but given their shared ownership, more and more overlap looks inevitable.

Travelocity. Expedia’s leading competitor, pulls most of its hotel rooms through the GDS operated by parent company Sabre. However, it has signed up close to 8,000 negotiated-rate properties in the past year, as it tries to wean itself from dependency on rooms supplied by Hotels.com.

Orbitz. best known for air booking, pulls in hotel rooms from both Travelweb and the Worldspan GDS. Like its competitors, though, it is striving to develop its own negotiated-rate hotel business.

Placestostay.com. the Web site of WorldRes, provides thousands of independent hotels with a channel to offer their rooms online. The company also offers one of the Web’s best collections of bed breakfast listings.

CheapTickets.com. is powered by the Galileo GDS. It is owned by travel and real estate conglomerate Cendant Corp. which also owns hotel brands such as Ramada, Days Inn and Travelodge. Another player to watch is OneTravel.com, which is partly owned by European GDS Amadeus.

Quikbook is a niche site that focuses on providing good prices for mid- to upper-range hotels in major urban centers, helping to make it a popular site with business travelers. Advance payment is required only for reservations at Las Vegas hotels.

More concerned about your budget than the name of your hotel? Consider using an auction or discount site. Priceline.com and Hotwire.com offer rooms that are usually deeply discounted from published rates. There is one catch you can pick your price and location, but you won’t know what hotel you’re staying at until after you’ve purchased your room.

These sites do allow you to pick what part of town you want to stay in and, in most cases, allow you to pick the minimum rating you’ll accept for your room on the 5-star scale. Here’s how they work:

Hotwire.com asks you to enter your destination and travel dates. You have the option of searching for rooms in a particular part of town or throughout the whole area. Hotwire then returns the best rates it finds for your dates, breaking down each rate by location and the five-star rating of the hotel. If you find a price that suits your criteria for location and five-star rating, you can purchase a room at that rate. But you won’t know the name of the hotel until the purchase is complete. Hotwire’s network of hotels includes major chains and local, independent establishments.

Priceline.com works a bit differently. On this site, you bid for a room. You tell Priceline when and where you want a room, and what price you are willing to pay. In addition, you select the part of town and the minimum rating you are willing to consider for a hotel economy, moderate, moderate-plus or upscale. Usually within 15 minutes, Priceline will tell you whether a hotel has agreed to your price. But beware if your price is accepted, your credit card will be charged for the rooms, whether or not you ultimately use them.

The name of your hotel will not be revealed until after you have purchased a room. However, consumer site Biddingfortravel.com provides tips to help you guess.

Take note reservations purchased on Priceline and Hotwire are not changeable or refundable. If your travel plans change, your reservations cannot be amended not even for a fee. You will not earn frequent flyer milers or other frequent guest perks for stays booked through either of these sites.

Hotel discounts can also come at a price in service. Hotels are less likely to accommodate your request for an upgrade or other special service if you arrive with a deeply discounted voucher from an e-travel agent. If you want full service, maximum flexibility, and loyalty program points, book directly on a hotel chain’s site, some of which serve several brands.

Leading sites where you can search for hotels in multiple cities include:

Despite all of these online choices, experienced travelers have not abandoned the telephone as a booking tool. They use the Web to get an idea of prices, then call the hotel directly to negotiate.

    Beaches Resorts

Cebu City is situated off the eastern coast of the main island of Cebu Province in the southern Philippines.

Cebu City is the capital of Cebu and the second largest and most significant metropolitan center in the Philippines. The city is located on the eastern shore of Cebu and was the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines, making it a center of art and culture. It is affectionately known as the “Queen City of the South.” There is a wide range of Cebu Hotels and Resorts that cater to tourist and business travelers, and is usually the jumping off point to other Cebu Island hotel destinations. For foreign tourists, it is often considered the best mix of modern city convenience with tropical island lifestyle.

Mactan Island lies a few kilometers southeast of Cebu mainland. The island is connected to Cebu Island by two bridges, the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge and the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge. Mactan is developed and urban, but there are some nice beaches on the coast, and some very upscale Cebu Hotels have been developed there. There are some fantastic dive sites near the Mactan coast, and the island is famous for local handicrafts such as the guitar, and other wood crafts. The Philippines second largest international airport is located on the island.

Malapascua Island is both a peaceful, remote tropical island with an awesome beach, and a diver’s paradise destination. There are some fantastic dive sites near the island, the most famous being the Thresher Shark dive. The island is 3 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, with a population of about 4,000. The main beach (Bounty Beach) has white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The west coast is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. A walk or tour of the whole island can be done within half a day. Malapascua Hotels and Resorts are mostly budget hotels, but the higher end hotels are of good value.

Bantayan Island is located at the northernmost tip of Cebu mainland and is composed of three municipalities, namely Sta. Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos. Aside from having one of the oldest churches in the Visayas and Mindanao, it is also known for its massive white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Bantayan Hotels and Resorts dottingthe island’s shores offer a mix of local and international cuisines as well as vast arrays of fresh seafood to choose from. It would take you several days to completely explore the Bantayan Island.

Moalboal is on the Cebu Island mainland; an easy 90 kilometers from Cebu City. It is famed for some of the best diving in the Philippines, and its white sandy beaches. There are two main tourist beaches, and most Moalboal Hotels and Resorts are located on either Panagsama Beach or White Beach. White Beach is has a slightly nicer beach, and Panagsama Beach has more of the restaurants and nightlife. The nightlife is generally calm and relaxed. During the day, there are waterfalls and caves and other beautiful sights to be explored. Moalboal Hotels and Resorts are mostly suited to diver and value travelers, although there is something for every taste and budget.

Other Cebu Areas – Cebu Island Hotels and Resorts dot the coast of the 225 kilometer Cebu Island. There are numerous beautiful beaches, deep cave systems, sleepy fishing villages, tropical jungles, waterfalls, and secluded budget to high end hotels and resorts. There are some nice “all inclusive” resorts and spas, and also some budget rest houses for adventurous explorers. Cebu Island has a perfect blend of Spanish-era history and stunning natural beauty.

We hope that this information helps you to select the perfect Cebu hotel. Please enjoy the wealth of Cebu information that our site provides. If you have any specific questions feel free to contact one of our Cebu experts.

    Sanskrit – Introduction

Sanskrit is an extremely interesting language. It is amazingly logical. There are lots of rules but, once you have learnt them, there are none of the tiresome exceptions found in most languages. Also, once you have learned how to pronounce a letter, it is always pronounced in that way. Unfortunately, simply learning the letters is not sufficient to enable you to look up words in the dictionary. Letter combinations can look quite different from the same letters on their own. Also words found in the scriptures usually consist of combinations of many separate words and, when words join, they often change. An example that you will probably have seen is sachchidAnanda. If you did not know this word, you would have to know the rules of these combinations in order to be able to work out that the separate words of which this consists – sat. chit and Ananda – in order to be able to look them up. You can see that, when a word ending in t combines with one beginning with ch, the t also changes to a ch. And the t at the end of chit becomes a d. Accordingly, you will not find this word in the dictionary under ‘sach’ but just after ‘sat’. This particular word is present in its complete form because it is in such common usage but infrequent combinations will not themselves be listed and you have to break them down into the individual words to find out the meaning. (This is known as euphony or ‘sandhi’.)

Sanskrit uses an alphabet quite unlike ours. For a start, it contains nearly twice as many letters (more than three times the number of vowels) and these letters can look quite different depending upon where they appear in a word and which other letters are adjacent. The language is also written in ‘Devanagari’ script, which is quite unreadable without a lot of study and practice. Here is an example:

It is one of the mahavakyas, the four aphorisms from the Vedas. This one is tat tvam asi – perhaps the most famous – and means ‘thou art that’, i.e. you are the one unchanging reality, the Self, Brahman or God.

It is interesting to note in passing that there is a close parallel between the structure of the language and the Advaita-related myth of the creation. Indeed, some schools of thought, notably in the North of India and Kashmir, believe that the universe was ‘spoken’ into existence. Though this ‘primordial’ language is beyond ordinary sound, Sanskrit is its earthly manifestation as it were and embodies many of the ‘universal principles’. The language itself is believed to embody the truth of the unity of the Self. Since pure Advaita claims that there is effectively no such thing as creation, the value of discussing these ideas is ultimately academic. Such studies can help prepare the mind to acknowledge those truths that remain forever beyond its grasp but they can also prove a hindrance. They have more appeal to those whose nature is inclined towards bhakti yoga rather than j

nAna. The entire language evolves in an almost mathematical way from a fundamental sound. The laws governing the way that words are constructed, and the grammar used to join them, are strict. It is amazing that the language, though the most ancient known and no longer in general use, remains true to its original form and someone learning it now would be able to communicate perfectly well with someone speaking the language thousands of years ago.

I wrote this book for people who were in the position I had been several years earlier of wanting to be able to ‘read’ the Devanagari script in Upanishads and the Gita and look up some of the words in a dictionary. It also seemed useful (it was an inevitable part of satisfying the first requirement anyway!) to be able to pronounce and write them correctly.

It provides a two-level introduction to the Sanskrit language. Level one introduces the transliterated (Anglicised) alphabets used by books and the Internet for reproducing Sanskrit. Level two teaches the Devanagari script used for the true language and describes the main rules for combining letters and words. Correct pronunciation and writing are explained. The shivasUtrANi are explained in passing and some of the rules from the laghu-siddhAnta-kaumudI but this should not put anyone off since the whole exposition is intended for a complete beginner. A number of examples from the Upanishads, Gita and Astavakra Gita are used to illustrate simple translation. There is a comprehensive glossary of the Sanskrit terms used and a second one containing commonly encountered spiritual words. Extracts from the book can be seen here .

N.B. In order to be able to view the Devanagari script on the other pages of this section, you will need to have the appropriate Sanskrit font installed on your computer.

FreePCI Compliance:FreePCI Scan: Why becoming PCI Compliant matters

PCI Free provides free compliance resources including quarterly scans and questionnaires. Merchants and business owners can save time and money with free PCI compliant merchant solutions.

If your business accepts or processes payment cards, it must comply with the PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards). All businesses and merchants that store, process and or transmit card holder information are now required to be PCI compliant.

PCI DSS is a set of requirements for enhancing data security. This originally began as individual programs from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB. To facilitate the broad adoption of consistent data security measures Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB aligned their individual policies to release the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards.

Is PCI Compliance just another profit center for my merchant processor?

Many believe that the new PCI compliance standards are little more than new revenue stream for merchant processors. Most small business owners and merchants have little information about the process and as a result wind up paying inflated PCI compliance fees. Merchant processors have been charging up to 300.00. Completing a form is frequently all that is required for many merchants to meet the standards, charging small businesses 300.00 for nothing more than completing a form is excessive, to say the least.

    Smart business owners becomePCI Compliant

In today’s economy, merchants and small business ownersare required to thoroughly evaluate operating costs, merchant processing fees is an area frequently overlooked.Evaluating and comparing merchant processing solutions including fees for services such as ours for your business can be well worth the time it takes and result in considerable savings for your company.

    London area of Hoxton guide

What to do and where to stay in London’s Hoxton neighbourhood

Twenty years ago, this was rough-and-ready Hackney heartland, where cockneys mixed uneasily with newer arrivals, and seedy strip bars proliferated. Then London’s artists moved in and now it is the trendiest place in the capital, a Mecca for skinny jeans, checked shirts, ironic haircuts, edgy art galleries and hip bars that play music that will only become fashionable in about six months time. Keep an eye on the walls, as well, for many of the artists don’t feel the need to obey the law when creating work and the graffiti is impressively weird and witty. Hoxton Square and Jay Jopling’s White Cube gallery are where it all started and remain the heart of the area, while on a Friday night, the bars and clubs of Old Street are a strange place where the pinstripes and ties of the City mingle with the extravagant fashions of the avant-garde.

Certification for Hospice and Palliative Medicine Specialists

Today, physicians specializing in hospice and palliative medicine have several certifications available to them beyond their primary board certification: ABMS, AOA, and HMDCB.

Since 2008, member boards of ABMS and AOA have certified physicians in the specialty-level practice of hospice and palliative medicine. There are 6,952 ABMS/AOA CAQ physicians in hospice and palliative medicine.

In 2012, AAHPM recommended the creation of the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board (HMDCB) to administer a certification that is complimentary to ABMS and AOA certification but specific to the practice of hospice medicine. The HMDCB examination assesses additional expertise in the unique competencies to perform the role of a hospice medical director, such as regulatory, administrative, legal, ethical competencies, and clinical skills appropriate for hospice patients.

    Maintenance

AAHPM is committed to providing information and support for

Information for HMDCB’s recertification will be available when it is developed. A number of educational opportunities and resources are offered for both for preparation and continuing education.

    History of Certification

Certification is widely considered the gold standard of expertise in medicine because of its unique physician-directed approach for assessing qualifications. While medical licensure sets the minimum competency requirements, board certification demonstrates a physician’s expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.

Although certification is sought and earned by physicians on a voluntary basis, it is recognized by government, healthcare systems, insurers, and patients themselves as an essential tool to judge that a physician has the knowledge, experience, and skills for providing quality health care within a given specialty or subspecialty.

    ABHPM

AAHPM has supported certification by its members since 1996. The creation of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) provided an independent organization charged with certifying physicians practicing hospice and palliative medicine.

In October 2006, ABHPM offered its last certification exam in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and phased out recertification and support of existing certifications when the field was officially recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in 2006 and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in 2007. AAHPM maintains the ABHPM certification database and provides verification (upon request) for diplomates through 2017.

How to fund your long-term care – a beginner’s guide

People often have to make quick and difficult decisions about their own or a loved one’s care needs. Thinking about the options in advance will help in the long run.

This all depends on your health and mobility, what level of help and support you need and the value of your savings, assets and income.

You could end up paying for all of it, some of it or nothing at all.

    NHS continuing healthcare

If you have a disability or complex medical problem, you might qualify for free NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) if you’re an adult, or free NHS continuing care (CC) if you’re under 18. Not many people know about it, so it’s important to find out if you’re eligible and get an assessment.

This is a package of healthcare that’s arranged and funded by the NHS. It is provided for you at home, or in a hospital, nursing home or hospice.

You’re more likely to qualify if you have mostly healthcare needs rather than social care needs. In other words you need a nurse rather than a carer.

If you live in Northern Ireland, Continuing Health Care is provided by your local Health and Social Care Trust.

Local authority funding for long-term care

Your local council (or Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland) may be able to help you with the costs of residential care.

If you prefer, they can help you stay in your own home by providing support for carers, equipment and specialist services.

Exactly how much funding you receive will depend on:

    • your individual needs (based on a care needs assessment)
    • how much you can afford to pay towards the costs of care yourself (based on a financial assessment)

Your local authority or trust can arrange care services for you or you can choose to receive direct payments and organise things yourself.

    Self-funding your long-term care

The biggest fear about funding long-term care is that you’ll be forced to sell your home. Fortunately, there are other options available.

Depending on your circumstances you may not qualify for funding from the NHS or your local authority.

Even if you do, the amount you receive may not be enough to completely cover your care costs. If this happens you’ll need to think about how you’re going to top up any contributions or pay for it all yourself.

Claim the benefits you’re entitled to

Even if you have to pay for care you may still be entitled to claim some benefits.

These two benefits aren’t means tested, so you could get them if your health needs are great enough and you have income and savings:

    • Attendance Allowance
    • Personal Independence Payment (which is replacing Disability Living Allowance)

There are other benefits that you may also be able to claim depending on your circumstances.

    Bendigo Tourism

A guide to activities, attractions, services, and events presented by the Bendigo Visitor Centre

Bendigo is Victoria’s fourth largest city, located around 150 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.

Bendigo has a rich and prosperous heritage dating back to the days when gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s. Since then, Bendigo has been the second highest producing goldfield in Australia and remains the seventh largest in the world.

Bendigo’s rich gold history has produced a city of unparalleled opulence and grandeur. Stunning architecture and manicured gardens are all symbolic of Bendigo.

One of Bendigo’s most elegant streets is Pall Mall in the city centre. At its southern end stands the grand Alexandra Fountain which was built in 1881 out of granite. Further along Pall Mall is the elaborate old post office (built between 1883 and 1887) which now houses the Bendigo Visitor Information Centre, and next door are the law courts (built between 1892 and 1896), also of similar architecture. On the corner of Pall Mall and Williamson Street is Bendigo’s most famous hotel, the lavishly adorned Shamrock, which was built in 1897.

Bendigo’s shopping precinct extends along Pall Mall, Hargreaves Street (including the Hargreaves Mall), Queen Street, Williamson Street and tree-lined Mitchell Street.

Attractions for visitors include the Central Deborah Mine complex which offers underground mine tours and the Talking Tram which takes passengers on an almost 5 kilometre journey passing many of the city’s attractions. Rosalind Park, in the city’s centre, features a lookout tower offering impressive views across Bendigo, while Bendigo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral, built in 1896, is the largest Gothic cathedral in the southern hemisphere. Other attractions include several art galleries and the Golden Dragon Museum which is a tribute to the city’s long history with Chinese people and culture.

Bendigo city is situated in a fertile valley, surrounded by a number of hilly suburbs featuring wide tree-lined streets, bushland, and a several large reserves, creating a pleasant and green environment for residents and visitors. In fact, with natural bushland entirely surrounding Bendigo, it has been referred to as “a city within a forest”. A number of lakes and reservoirs are located within the city, including the most central, Lake Weeroona, which features gardens and parkland.

An interesting suburb of Bendigo is Eaglehawk, located in the north-west. Originally a gold mining town in its own right during the Gold Rush days, the growth of Bendigo eventually extended out to and surrounded Eaglehawk. Historic landmarks in Eaglehawk include the opulent town hall (built in 1901), the red-brick courthouse (1869) and the old Bank of Victoria (1881). Canterbury Park, once a barren ruin of alluvial gold workings, has been transformed into botanical gardens and recreational facilities overlooking picturesque Lake Neangar.

Bendigo was the city in which penniless Russian immigrant Sidney Myer opened the first Myer store in 1900. Today, Myer department stores can be found throughout Australia’s capital cities and regional centres.

Guide to AA ratings and awards

    One-Pennant parks
One-Pennant parks offer a simple standard of facilities. You can expect to find no more than 30 pitches per acre, with at least 10% of the pitches allocated to tourers. There will be an adequate drinking water supply and reasonable drainage, plus a washroom with flush toilets (if there are no toilet facilities this should be clearly stated). Chemical disposal arrangements are provided, ideally with running water and clearly signed refuse disposal arrangements. The ground will be well-drained with some level pitches, and entrance and access roads will be of an adequate width and surface.

    Two-Pennant parks
These parks offer a better level of facilities, services, customer care and ground maintenance. You should find separate washrooms, including at least two WCs and two washbasins, with hot and cold water, per gender for every 30 pitches. Toilet blocks will be externally lit and a warden will be available, at times indicated, during the day. Covered and lit dishwashing facilities are provided and you can expect to find a park reception area.

    Three-Pennant parks
Three-Pennant parks are of a very good standard with well-maintained facilities and grounds, and attention to customer care and security. You can expect to find modern toilet blocks and also modern shower cubicles (one per gender for every 35 pitches). The parks offer some electric-hook-ups, hardstandings, wheel runs and/or firm level ground. A laundry with at least one washing machine and drying facilities will be available, and you can expect to find a children’s playground.

Four-Pennant parks These parks have achieved an extremely high standard in all areas. You can expect fully tiled shower cubicles and some combined toilet-washing cubicles. A warden is available at all times, and there is a good level of security and supervision. At least half of the pitches will have an electric hook-up and there will be a maximum of 25 pitches per camping acre. There will also be a shop on site or nearby, and the park will have a reception area and a late-arrivals enclosure.

    Five-Pennant Premier parks
Premier Parks are of an extremely high standard, set in attractive surroundings with mature landscaping. Facilities, security and customer care are exceptional. You can expect to find electric hook-ups at most pitches, and first-class toilet facilities, including several self-contained cubicles ideally with a WC, washbasin and shower. At many Premier Parks you will find a well-equipped shop, a heated swimming pool, and a cafe, restaurant and/or bar.

    Percentage Score

AA Pennant-rated parks and Holiday Centres achieve an overall quality score as a percentage, which helps to differentiate parks with the same Pennant rating.

    AA Gold Pennants
AA Gold Pennants are awarded to the very best camping parks with a Quality Score of 90% and above within the 2, 3, 4 and 5 Pennant ratings.

    Holiday Centres

Holiday Centres cater for all holiday needs, including entertainment and catering facilities. They provide:

    • a wide range of on-site sports, leisure and recreational facilities
    • exceptional supervision and security
    • a choice of eating outlets
    • touring facilities of equal importance to statics
    • a maximum density of 25 pitches per acre
    • clubhouse with entertainment provided
    • automatic laundry

    Rosette awards for restaurants

The long-established Rosette scheme recognises successful cooking at different levels across the UK. Success or failure in achieving Rosettes is based on one or more visits by an AA inspector to a hotel or restaurant. Essentially the visit is a snapshot, whereby the entire meal, including ancillary items (when served), is assessed.

About 10% of restaurants nationwide are of a standard that is worthy of One Rosette and above. This is indeed a huge achievement, and not to be underestimated.

We recommend you don’t chase awards, rather see them as something to celebrate when that they come along. While we endeavour to work with the industry and promote great cooking across the UK, it is paramount to always serve your market first.

Where the winning of Rosettes is an aspiration, the simple guidelines below provide helpful information. AA food tastings, enhanced food tasting, or signing up to one of the AA Rosette Academies also give further insight and guidance, but they are separate from the awards process and do not influence any assessments.

AA Rosettes are solely awarded by AA Hotel and Restaurant Inspectors. External influences from hotels, restaurants or other guides are not taken into account when awarding Rosettes.

Establishements feel pride is the most important aspect of being awards an AA Rosette

A Rosette survey was sent out to all establishments with an AA Rosette/s.

Establishments were canvassed for their views on the benefits of the AA Rosette scheme, the survey showed the following results:

90% stated Pride was the most important factor

84% felt Motivation was the most important factor

42% felt is helped deliver extra revenue and covers

40% felt is helped with staff retention

31% felt it helped withy staff recruitment

30% felt it helped increased sales overall

These restaurants achieve standards that stand out in their local area. They serve food prepared with care, understanding and skill, using good quality ingredients. The same expectations apply to hotel restaurants, where guests can eat in with confidence and a sense of anticipation. Around 50% of restaurants/hotels within our AA Restaurant Guide have One Rosette.

Excellent restaurants that aim for and achieve higher standards and better consistency. A greater precision is apparent in the cooking, and there will be obvious attention to the selection of quality ingredients. Around 40% of restaurants/hotels within our AA Restaurant Guide have Two Rosettes.

Outstanding restaurants that achieve standards that demand recognition well beyond their local area. The cooking is underpinned by the selection and sympathetic treatment of the highest quality ingredients. Timing, seasoning and the judgment of flavour combinations will consistently be excellent. These virtues tend to be supported by other elements, such as intuitive service and a well-chosen wine list. Around 10% of the restaurants/hotels within the AA Restaurant Guide have Three Rosettes and above.

Among the top restaurants in the UK, where the cooking demands national recognition. These restaurants exhibit intense ambition, a passion for excellence, superb technical skills, and remarkable consistency. They will combine appreciation of culinary traditions with a passionate desire for further exploration and improvement. There are very few restaurants with Four AA Rosettes.

The pinnacle, where cooking compares with the best in the world. These restaurants have highly individual voices, exhibit breathtaking culinary skills, and set standards to which others aspire to, yet few achieve.

    Announcements of awards

    • One and Two Rosettes are awarded at the time of inspection.
    • Three and Four Rosette awards are announced twice during the year, but never at the time of inspection.
    • Five Rosettes are awarded just the once during a year, and never at the time of inspection.

Suspension of Three, Four and Five Rosettes

When a chef holds Three, Four or Five Rosettes and moves from one establishment to another, the award is suspended at the hotel/restaurant they have just left. The award does not follow the chef either.

We therefore recommend that establishments inform us of a change of chef as soon as possible, in order to schedule a forthcoming inspection.

    What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is intended for people with a life limiting or terminal illness. Services are provided free of charge by a team of health care professionals who help patients to live as actively as they can to the end of their lives, and maximizes comfort by reducing pain and addressing physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. Unlike other medical care, however, the focus of hospice care isn’t to cure or treat the underlying disease. The goal of hospice care is to provide the highest quality of life possible for whatever time remains. This is also known as palliative care.

    · Social work services

    · Religious and spiritual support

    · Medications for symptom control and pain relief

    · Physical and occupational therapy

    · Bereavement care for family and loved ones

Who can benefit from hospice care?

Hospice care is for anyone with a life limiting or terminal illness. There are Hospices for adults and children and young people. Hospice Care helps people with many different types of Illness. Many people who receive hospice care have cancer, while others may have conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Hospice care can be provided at any stage of a person’s illness, not just at the end of their life. Enrolling in hospice care early may help you or your loved one develop a strong relationship with the hospice staff, who can help with preparation for end-of-life needs.

    Where is Hospice Care provided?

Hospice care is provided in a number of different ways. This can be inpatient units, day care, Palliative care in hospitals and Care homes. Also many people prefer to be looked after in their own home and this is made possible through the Hospice at Home service and community Palliative care nurses.

    Who’s involved in hospice care?

A hospice care team typically includes:

Doctors. A primary care doctor and the hospice program’s medical director — who typically has expertise in symptom management and end-of-life care — will oversee the loved one’s care. The doctor approves the plan of care and works with the hospice team.

Nurses. Nurses will come to loved one’s home or other setting to provide care. Nurses also address symptom management and concerns about end-of-life issues, as well as provide support for loved ones.

Home health aids. Home health aides can provide extra support for routine care, such as dressing, bathing and eating.

Spiritual counselors. Hospice care also tends to the spiritual needs. Since people differ in their spiritual needs and religious beliefs, spiritual care is set up to meet specific needs. Chaplains, priests, or other spiritual counselors can provide spiritual care and guidance for the entire family. Clergy and other spiritual counselors are available to visit and provide spiritual support at home. Spiritual care is a personal process, and may include helping explore what death means, resolving “unfinished business,” saying goodbye to loved ones, and performing a specific religious ceremony or ritual.

Social workers. Social workers provide counseling and support. They can also help address insurance and financial concerns. A social worker counsels and advises, and acts as a community advocate, making sure there is access to the resources needed.

Volunteers. Trained hospice volunteers offer a variety of services depending on needs, from providing company or respite for caregivers to helping with transportation or other practical needs.

Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies. These hospice specialists can help develop new ways to perform tasks that may have become difficult due to illness, such as walking, dressing, or feeding oneself.

Respite Care. While in hospice, family and caregivers may need some time away. Hospice care may offer them a break called respite care. During this time a patient will be cared for either in a hospice facility or in beds that are set aside in nursing homes or hospitals. Respite care gives families a break from the intensity of care giving.

Bereavement counselors. Trained bereavement counselors offer support and guidance before and after the death of a loved one in hospice. Bereavement is the time of mourning everyone experiences following a loss. The hospice care team will work with surviving family members to help them through the grieving process.

Pain and symptom control. The goal of pain and symptom control is to keep patients as comfortable as possible to allow them to stay in control of and enjoy life. This means that side effects, discomfort, and pain are managed.

When should hospice services be considered?

Hospice care can be discussed at any time. Often, the discussion about hospice services takes place when the patient learns that:

The illness is no longer treatable and that additional therapies will not provide any benefit

A physical decline and exhaustion are likely to be permanent

Treatment is no longer desired by the patient

Generally patients are referred for Hospice care by their hospital doctor or GP. In some cases patients can also be referred by their district nurse. Patients and or relatives can also refer but the hospice would most likely need to discuss this with the patient’s professional health carer.

Patients are usually referred to their nearest Hospice, but if family and or loved ones live further away it may be possible for patients to be referred to a hospice closer to their loved ones.

Hospice Care provides for all of a hospice patient’s medical needs related to symptom management and comfort care.

    Alternating pressure mattress

    Mouth care supplies

    Skin care lotions

    Dressings and wound care supplies

    What about alternative therapies?

Many hospices integrate different techniques and therapies outside the practice of mainstream medicine to support hospice patients and their families. Many hospice professionals have trained in alternative or complimentary therapies. In addition, many people who practice these techniques professionally volunteer their services to hospice clients.

The following are some of the techniques used to benefit patients:

    – Relaxation techniques – Visualization, guided imagery

    – Comfort touch, Reiki and Massage

    – Creative Expression – Art, Writing

    – Comprehensive, interdisciplinary care from a team of professionals and volunteers.

    – Care is available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. Patients and their caregivers always have access to hospice professionals when they need it.

    – The hospice care team aims to support the patients and caregiver’s wishes while helping them achieve their goals for care.

    – Hospice allows terminally ill people and their families to remain together in the comfort and dignity of familiar surroundings. often at home.

    – Hospice care provides expert pain and symptom management allowing a terminally ill person to be as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

    – Hospice treats the person, not the disease.

    – Hospice care respects and reflects a person’s choices about end-of-life care.

    – Hospice cares for the entire family unit. not just the patient. A family member is anyone the patient shares a significant relationship with.

    – Hospice Care focuses on quality not quantity of life.

    – Hospice Care provides an interdisciplinary team of knowledgeable professionals and volunteers to care for people and their loved ones who are experiencing a life-limiting illness.

    – Hospice Care is free.

Once upon a time accommodation in the UK had to be seen to be believed, it was so bad – varying from five-star joints where everyone wore a tie and you could hear a pin drop, to rule-bound B Bs that hadn’t seen a re-furb since the war. With that in mind, the transformation of the accommodation landscape in Britain is all the more remarkable, with a new breed of enthusiastic hosts focused on providing high quality, contemporary accommodation: fabulous old-style pubs with new-style rooms, gloriously romantic boutique B Bs, and hotels in which nothing is too much trouble but they don’t make you feel bad about it.

Plus it’s not all about the money. We love to camp and reckon that the UK has some of the best and most spectacularly situated campsites in the world – perched on the edge of seaside cliffs, deep in ancient forests, even in the middle of national parks and nature reserves; and for those who wouldn’t be seen dead holding a tent peg, glamping is both affordable and fun – whether you prefer yurts, pods, bell tents or shepherds huts. Finally we have the web’s largest inventory of countrywide self-catering properties, cottages and country houses – hand-selected and all a cut above the average.

All in all, there’s never been a better time to get out and enjoy the best accommodation Britain has to offer. But don’t just take our word for it – browse through some of the fabulous places’ we have on the site.

    Consumer guide to hospice

By Dan Keating and Shelly Tan, Updated: Dec. 18, 2014

Hospices vary widely in ways that can affect patient care.

The Washington Post has gathered data largely from government sources on more than 3,000 hospices that participate in Medicare, which pays for the vast majority of hospice care in this country. No single factor can predict the quality of a hospice’s care, and these figures do not offer a complete picture of any single hospice. But consumers can benefit from knowing how a hospice compares to others on these important measures.

Select a state below to explore its hospices or read on to learn more about a hospice’s important traits.

    How to use this guide:

In compiling the statistics for the guide, The Post sought expert opinion on what information, among that which could be gleaned from Medicare reports, would be useful for consumers.

The guide provides information about agencies around the country, including, among other things:

    • The hospice’s age
    • Its size
    • Its accreditation
    • What it spends on nursing per patient
    • Whether the operation is for-profit
    • Whether it has provided at least some patients with “crisis care,” meaning either continuous nursing care or general inpatient services.
    • What percentage of patients are discharged from the hospice before dying.

Here is some advice from experts about how to weigh all of this information.

Age and size: The experts generally favored hospices that are older and that serve more than a small number patients at a time. A hospice over say, 10 years old, has a track record as well as experience. Medium-sized and larger hospices may be better able to provide backup and more intense services, experts said.

Accreditation: To varying degrees, experts consulted by The Post favored hospices that have been accredited by outside groups. Hospices that have been accredited have opened themselves up to outside scrutiny. They also have faced inspections more often – once every three years.

Inspections: The guide shows how long a hospice has gone since the last government inspection. A long span since the last inspection doesn’t mean that the hospice has dodged the inspectors. The reason for long times between inspections is that the federal government, partly due to funding shortfalls, has had hospices inspected only once every six years or so. Recent legislation is supposed to make them more frequent, however. Finally, keep in mind that this data is current through 2013. If a hospice has had an inspection more recently, it may not show up here.

Live-discharge rate: This statistic shows how many people leave the hospice alive and several industry experts have suggested it is a good reflection of quality.

The reason live discharge rate is useful may seem a bit counter-intuitive. In some cases, of course, leaving hospice alive is a good thing – because it means survival. But experts say that a live discharge rate much over 25 percent might be viewed as a warning because it may mean that the hospice is discharging patients when they need more care or enrolling patients who aren’t near death.

Spending: The guide includes data on how much the hospice spends per patient on nurses, doctors and therapy.

Patients receiving home visit in last two days: For patients receiving routine hospice care at home, the hardest days for the patient and family are often the last days prior to death. This measures the proportion of those patients who received a skilled visit from a nurse or therapist in those last two days.

These numbers come directly from the reports that the hospices file with Medicare. The Medicare cost reports, however, are unaudited, and some experts expressed caution about relying too much on them.

Finally, the guide should probably just mark the beginning of the shopping process. Experts advised interviewing hospices about their services, too. A list of questions suggested by the American Hospice Foundation may be found here .

Patients whose pain or other symptoms have flared out of control are supposed to be able to get continuous nursing care at home or general inpatient care. But more than one-in-seven hospices have not provided patients with either of those services, according to records. A majority of hospices have provided the special care less than one percent of the time. But some hospices more regularly provide the crisis services.

Spending Per Day on Patient Care

Hospices report how much they spend on average per patient for each day of hospice care they provide. Some hospices report spending less than $100 per day, while others spend at least twice that much.

For more information on choosing a hospice, readers may check with this guide from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

The vast majority of the information presented is from Medicare cost reports and service provider listings, which are submitted to the government by the hospices themselves. Nevertheless, information is sometimes inaccurate. Some hospices affiliated with hospitals file different Medicare reports and are not included.
