Low-pressure carburizing Since being developed in the late 1960’s, much progress and many improvements have been made. Modern technologies and recent advancements in low-pressure carburizing (LPC) within the last fifteen years have made many companies throughout the industry realize the many proven benefits of LPC, primarily it’s capability of precise process control, can no longer be ignored. Tight control enables absolute repeatability, optimized part microstructure, enhanced mechanical properties, and reduced manufacturing costs.

While some heat treat companies have just begun realizing the benefits and have begun offering LPC services, Midwest Thermal-Vac has been vacuum carburizing since 1999 and continues to be an industry leader.

Vacuum carburizing technology
Demand for vacuum carburizing systems equipped with high-pressure gas quenching, oil quenching, or both has quadrupled since 2000, as the technology has replaced atmosphere carburizing and traditional oil quenching in many cases. New advances in vacuum furnace technology help integrate heat treating equipment on the shop floor and into the production flow of the manufacturing process.

Temperature uniformity is critical for vacuum carburizing, especially in the low-temperature ranges, and a maximum spread of ?0�F (?.5�C) is required to maintain tight case depth control throughout the load. This is equally important for vacuum carbonitriding cycles, which are run as low as 1425�F (775�C). Highly loaded gears and shafts, such as those in off-road vehicles under extreme race conditions, require fracture toughness values two or three times those of conventional vehicles. Tightly controlled low-pressure vacuum carburizing processes deliver these high-performance values.

Hardness: The new materials require better control of hardness and carbon distribution (case/core hardness, surface/near surface), optimized microstructures, and control of such factors as retained austenite, carbide size (type and distribution), and non-martensitic phases. Property control is also critical, especially for characteristics such as residual stress patterns and surface finish, and mechanical properties such as toughness, impact strength, and wear resistance. Improved performance demands in aircraft and rotorcraft not only are pushing the development of advanced materials, but also are driving prime contractors and their suppliers to low pressure vacuum carburizing.

Typical commercial and military aircraft applications of low-pressure vacuum carburizing include braking systems, actuator systems, flight controls and guidance systems, hydraulic power plants, landing gearboxes, and components such as bearings, ball screws and nuts, planetary gears, pinions, and shafts. To improve part performance throughout the industry, commercial heat treaters are beginning to share their knowledge with respect to successes and lessons learned.

Energy Efficient

The Phoenix has up to a 96% thermal efficiency rating, making it Energy Star certified. According to Energy Star, heating water accounts for 15% of a home’s energy use. HTP high efficiency water heaters consume anywhere from 10-50% less energy than standard models. The Phoenix has a 96% efficiency rating—that means that 96 cents of every dollar is used toward heating compared to a standard efficiency unit with 60% which only provides 60 cents worth of energy toward heating.

Versatility

Heat Pump

A Heat Pump is a machine working on the Carnot cycle which transfers heat from a heat source to a heat sink using a vapour compression cycle. A refrigerator uses a heat pump to move heat out of a fridge. An industrial heat pump can be used to move heat from an external source into a building. Heat may be obtained from an air source, a ground source or a water source. A heat pump can concentrate such “low grade heat” into higher grade heat that can be used for space heating and domestic hot water.

Ground Source Heat Pump GSHP

A ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground whose temperature will be warmer than the air in winter (and cooler than the air in summer). For this reason they are more efficient than air source heat pumps, especially in the coldest weather when they are most needed. They generate very little noise and should last for many years with minimal servicing.

The most practical way of extracting this energy is through water circulating through pipes in the ground. The pipes for the ground loop are usually laid in horizontal trenches at two metres deep, but vertical boreholes are an alternative, if more expensive, way of achieving similar results where there is not enough land to lay pipes horizontally.

At depths below six metres, the ground temperature does not vary much from the Mean Annual Air Temperature (around 9 C -11 C in the UK depending on location). At a depth below two metres, there is a large store of warmth that can be tapped for heating in the winter. However, this temperature will drop quickly where a heat pump is extracting a lot of heat from a small ground loop it is therefore very important that the size of the ground loop matches the heating load of the building. The key to achieving this balance is a full thermal modelling exercise.

Advantages of Ground Source Heat Pumps Pros and Cons

Heat pumps save money. Heat pumps are much cheaper to run than direct electric heating. They are cheaper to run than oil boilers and can be cheaper than running gas boilers. Because heat pumps can be fully automated they demand much less work than biomass boilers.

Heat pumps save carbon emissions. Unlike burning oil, gas, LPG or biomass, a heat pump produces no carbon emissions on site (and no carbon emissions at all, if a renewable source of electricity is used to power them).

Heat pumps save space. There are no fuel storage requirements.

Heat pumps are safe. There is no combustion involved and no emission of potentially dangerous gases. No flues are required.

Heat pumps require less maintenance than combustion based heating systems.

A well designed ground source heat pump system will increase the sale value of your property.

Heat pumps can provide cooling in summer, as well as heating in winter.

The planning authorities like ground source systems as they are safe, silent, invisible heating systems with low environmental impact.

The Government likes ground source systems and offers a much higher rate of Renewable Heat Incentive than for other renewable technologies.

Disadvantages of Ground Source Heat Pumps Pros and Cons

GSHPs are more expensive to install than air source heat pumps because of the need to install a ground heat exchanger. However, this connection to the ground is what enables a GSHP to perform much more efficiently than an ASHP particularly when the external air temperature is low in winter and you most need heating.

Problems arise with ground source heat pumps if the installation is poorly designed or not matched to the heating needs of the building. The design and installation of an effective ground source system depends on a thorough understanding of the movement of heat in the ground, the local geology and the heating and cooling requirements of your building. To get the potential benefit of a well designed system you will need to be in touch with an expert installer. This increases the cost of the installation, but good design and planning will yield substantial benefits over the life of the system.

Greater benefits can be achieved by moving to a full Interseasonal Heat Transfer system.

Coefficient of Performance CoP

The Coefficient of Performance is found by dividing the useful heat output by the electrical energy input. A heat pump that transfers 4 kilowatts of heat from the ground for 1 kilowatt of electricity has a CoP of 4.

Can I expect a CoP of 4 from a GSHP?

Not necessarily. A heat pump may yield a CoP of 4 in test conditions, but it will not always do so in an installation unless the ground loop is well designed and the heat delivery mechanism in the building is also well matched to a GSHP. It is possible to obtain a much higher CoP when a ground source heat pump is integrated with a solar collection system and a ThermalBank in order to achieve Interseasonal Heat Transfer.

Is it true that the CoP of a GSHP degrades as time passes?

As a GSHP draws heat out of the ground, the ground temperature will fall from its natural temperature of 10 C at depth towards 0 C or colder. The heat pump must work harder to produce the same output from a lower heat input: therefore the CoP tends to fall over the heating season (unless the ground loop is large enough and heat is only extracted slowly). This is because heat only moves slowly through the ground. This limitation can be converted into an asset by creating a ThermalBank to store solar heat energy in summer for use in winter.

Thermal Modelling

Thermal Modelling is critical to good design in any large installation of a ground source heat pump. The sizing of the ground loop is key to the successful operation of the heat pump. Before sizing the ground loop correctly it is necessary to understand the qualities of the ground to be used as well as the expected heating loads and cooling loads of the building and these will be affected by the design of the building, its orientation to the sun, the activities in the building and the ventilation strategies. These are complex issues which need to be analysed in a thermal model to ensure that the system will meet the temperatures required in the building throughout the seasons of the year in a well balanced and sustainable way.

Control Systems for Ground Source Heat Pumps

A good control system is important in achieving good results from ground source energy. The controls are critical if a building employs ground source energy in conjunction with other forms of heating which may be employed for generating domestic hot water or as a supplementary heating system in very cold weather.

Large Commercial GSHP Installations can benefit from Demand Response

Large heat pump installations particularly those that provide cooling in summer as well as heating in winter can now benefit from Demand Response: if clients are prepared to use the thermal mass of their buildings to store heat in advance of peak electric demand and defer heating at times of peak demand they can earn income from the Grid.

Control Fire Systems has everything our company needs. We called them and inquired about their products and had them install fire suppression, marine fire systems, fire alarm panels, fire alarm devices, fire extinguishers and fire safety products. I highly recommend them to everyone.

Control Fire System came on time for our scheduled quote on refilling our clean agent cylinder. They did a fast and efficient job and also provided cylinder hydrostatic testing and emergency cylinder recharges in case of any emergencies in the future. This is something like the fifth or sixth time we’ve used them and it’s always gone well. We’ll look forward to having CFS come back in future.

We purchased a fire alarm from you guys, for some out buildings where we run repair work. Recently, we had a small fire and the fire alarm detected it immediately and alerted my staff. Great to see a product working as it’s supposed to.

Your team of technicians and staff was a pleasure to do business with from the initial sales call through to the final briefing after installation. We had a close call last year and I can tell you that everyone on our end is feeling better with the new fire suppression systems in place.

They replaced a fire control panel for us this summer and I just wanted to pass on a compliment on how quickly I got a response and had the techs come out. We did the usual three quotes and Control Fire was easily the most responsive. It was very reassuring and the integration went seamlessly. We’ll be updating the rest of the systems in steps and now know who to call.

One of the great tricks of property management is being sure you’re not getting gouged by contractors downstream and having these guys onboard has been a great relief in that regard. It’s a partnership I plan to continue to take advantage of.

I wasn’t involved in the sales negotiation as the property management handled that but I can tell you that in terms of implementation they were wonderful to work with. We had accounting and other non-tech people in on the first meetings and Control Fire Systems was really able to capture the specifics and timelines in a way we could all grasp. I feel better knowing the care home is as safe as can be.

Our office building purchased Control Fire Services portable extinguishers a few years ago. We had them do a fire extinguisher inspection, refill (we have actually needed that!), repair and recharge. Impressed with the 6-year fire extinguisher maintenance if anything goes wrong. A good choice for commercial operations.

Physical Therapy for Chronic Pain: What to Expect

Physical therapy is often one of the best choices you can make when you have long-term pain (also called chronic pain) or an injury. It can make you stronger and help you move and feel better.

Ask your doctor to recommend a physical therapist. You’ll probably need a series of visits, and you should practice some of the exercises at home for the best results.

Physical therapists have a lot of training. Still, it’s a good idea to ask them about their experience in working with people who’ve had conditions like yours. You can also ask them how many sessions you’ll need.

How Does Physical Therapy Treat Pain?

Physical therapists are experts not only in treating pain but also its source. Yours will look for areas of weakness or stiffness that may be adding stress to the places that hurt. And they will treat those areas with certain exercises to reduce pain and help you move better.

In a physical therapy session, you may do more than one of these things:

Low-impact aerobic training. These workouts will rev up your heart rate and still take it easy on your joints. For instance, you might walk fast or use a stationary bike to warm up, instead of running, before you do your strengthening exercises.

Strengthening exercises. You might use machines at your physical therapist’s office, resistance bands, or your own body weight (think lunges, squats, and push-ups). You may work on your core muscles (belly, glutes, and back), as well as other parts of your body.

Pain relief exercises. These moves target areas where you have pain, so you’re stronger and more flexible — which should make it easier to live your life.

Stretching. This will be gentle, and your therapist will make sure that you’re warmed up and you don’t stretch too far.

Your physical therapist may prescribe exercises to do at home.

What Else Might I Do?

During your sessions, your therapist may also use:

Heat and ice packs. Ice calms inflammation. Heat warms up your muscles so they move better. Both can lower pain.

We manufacture a mobile semi-robotic drill pipe cleaner that is installed inside 20′ foot or 40′ foot container. Once on site two operators take several hours to set up the cleaning system. Once set up the semi robotic system should easily clean forty to eighty 48′ feet pipes inside and outside in an eight our shift.

For permanently situated inside pipe yards we manufacture and supply semi robotic or full robotic pipe cleaning systems.

Our very basic equipment will clean 20 to 30 drill pipes in an 8 hour shift and our fully robotic system can clean up to 130 (one hundred and thirty) 14.80 metre (48′ feet) long pipes, box and pins in the same 8 hour shift.

  • He can clean the pipe ID first and then clean the OD.
  • Or if he requires fast production, he can clean both the ID and the OD at the same time.

Planted Fusion last spring and went through our best hunting season ever this past fall. The plot developed well and we wish we had planted more. We all filled our tags and three of the four were killed in the Fusion field. 144 , 151 and a 166 monster. Thanks and we ve converted two more plots to Fusion this spring.

I planted your Fusion last spring. Sorry for the delay in putting together my comments. The plot did great and made it through a couple dry periods last summer. Great hunting season. My father and I killed 2 nice bucks standing in the Fusion plot. Thanks for your efforts to make our property more attractive to the deer. Our sightings have doubled since we started using Whitetail Institute products.

I can t believe what happened opening day of 2016 Maine deer season. I had 5 different bucks feeding since early August. 2 giants ( in Maine it s a 200 lb+ we all want) a wide 8 and a tall ten. 1.5 hours hunting and I take the 10 point 40 yards from my small fusion plot (1/4 ac) I had two small plots planted with fusion. I m now going to go all out and get much more in plots planted. I ran out of food. Looking to take the wide 8 point as my first bow kill. He will be a 250lb deer in 2017. We don t see lots of deer in Maine. I had them like no one else! Fusion magic. Plant it and they will come.

Although plumbers and utility companies in the Northeast report record numbers of conversions from oil heat to gas heat, it is not clear whether the conversions will pay off in the long run. It’s possible that insulating the house and replacing a large, inefficient oil boiler with a smaller, Energy Star unit would be a safer investment. Let’s look at the cons.

Plumbers in Boston report that the ballpark up-front investment in converting from oil heat to gas heat is $10,000, and that figure varies depending on whether or not you need to run a pipe out to the municipal gas line. How long will it take for that investment to pay itself off?

These are four reasons why an oil heat to gas heat conversion might not pay off:

1. The cost of gas might rise. Right now natural gas is cheaper than oil, but if demand increases it is possible that the price of gas will rise. Home heating oil dealers compete with each other, and you also have options like biodiesel fuel blends. If you don’t like your oil supplier, you can change suppliers. Natural gas is (generally) delivered by the local utility company. If they raise the price of natural gas, there is not always a competitor to switch to.

2. Heating delivery problems can negate the value of your investment. According to Habitat Magazine. a magazine for board members and property managers of co-ops and condos, the investment in converting from oil heat to gas heat is worth little if the building has heat distribution problems. Ineffective heat distribution can cause overheating on lower floors, and cold temperatures on upper floors. Revamping your heat delivery system could improve the performance of your oil heater sufficiently to reduce the costs of using it. Revamping your heat delivery system might also be an added cost that would negate the value of the lower cost of natural gas.

3. Ineffective insulation could render your new gas furnace ineffective. Truth be told, ineffective insulation could also be jacking up the price that you are paying for oil heat. Improperly installed attic insulation is one of the biggest heat loss culprits, as well as weak door and window seals. Without paying to convert from oil heat to gas heat, you can lower the cost of home heating by improving your house’s insulation.

4. It might be cheaper to buy a smaller, Energy Star certified oil burner than to convert from oil heat to gas heat. Old oil boilers in older houses tend to be larger than necessary, and not as efficient as newer, greener oil boilers. According to EnergyStar.gov, new combustion technologies allow new oil boilers to get more heat from the fuel. New Energy Star oil boilers run in the $3000 – $6000 range. Hire an HVAC contractor to install it for you, and your investment is still less than converting from oil heat to gas heat.

Installation Exclusions and Extras:
