Hospice House Levels of Care

The following levels of care can be provided at The Good Shepherd Hospice House:

Residential Care: Residential Care is simply the day to day hospice care that individuals receive at The Good Shepherd.

  • A hospice client may move to the hospice house simply because it is their desire to reside at The Good Shepherd. The decision may also be based on caregiver issues or any of a number of factors considered by the client and/or family.
  • Homecare Hospice does not make it a practice to move current hospice clients residing in their home or another facility to the hospice house unless it is at the client or family’s request.

Respite Care: Respite Care is short term inpatient care provided to hospice clients to relieve family members or other persons caring for the individual at home.

  • Medicare and most insurance pay to give the caregiver a break from the 24-hour task of caring for a loved one. Respite care allows the client’s caregiver up to five (5) consecutive days “off” from taking care of the client.
  • Respite care is a service that is designed to be used for a specific need and may be utilized only on an occasional basis.
  • Respite care is paid for as long as the intent is that the client will be returning home after five (5) days.
  • If after a few days, the caregiver decides that they can no longer care for the client at home, the client and family have two options to consider: To utilize Residential Care at The Good Shepherd Hospice House or to make other arrangements, i.e. to relocate to a nursing home or alternative care location.

General Inpatient Care (GIP): General Inpatient Care (GIP) is made available to all hospice client’s who are in need of pain control or symptom management that cannot be provided in any other setting.

  • GIP is considered short term care because the team’s job and overall goal is to get the client’s acute symptoms to a controlled level within 24-48 hours.
  • When the client’s symptoms have been managed for at least 24 hours, the doctor will order a discharge of the client to the Residential Care level if that client chooses to remain at The Good Shepherd. It is the client’s choice whether he/she wants to stay in the hospice house, go back home with care, or move to a nursing home.

Patients and families face special challenges in the final weeks of life, challenges a Hospice House is built specifically to meet. Only a Hospice House can fill this specific, sacred, important niche in our community’s healthcare network.

As a resident of the Hospice House, you will have a private room with many of the comforts of home and space for visiting family and friends. You will also have all of the medical, emotional and spiritual care services Hospice of Spokane has to offer. Physicians, nurses and nurse aides, social workers and grief counselors, chaplains and volunteers – all coming right to you to help in their own ways. And the door is always open for your personal doctor to care for you in the Hospice House.

When you are in the Hospice House, don’t worry about the prescription drugs related to your terminal illness… we’ll take care of them. If you need special equipment that we don’t have in the house, or your treatment calls for special therapies, we’ll address those needs, too.

Being in the Hospice House means you can get the same level of hospice care you would receive in a hospital or nursing home. Being in the house means you won’t need to move from one location to another as your health changes.

Feel Right At Home
At the Hospice House you and your family will feel right at home. Have a meal in the family dining room, or have it in the privacy of your own room. Sit and watch the day go by from the interior courtyard or in one of the gardens. Play a game of cribbage in the great room. Get a breath of fresh air on your private patio. Sit, contemplate, meditate or pray in the reflection room. Take a bath in the spa room. Children can even play in a room built especially for them. About Us

We are a 48 bedded family run care home situated in Cainscross, Stroud on the Westward Road, registered for residential, nursing and dementia care. Our Home Manager is an RGN who oversees the day to day running of the home.
We have a trained nurse on duty 24 hours a day and welcome residents for either respite care or on a long term basis. We are able to care for older people over 65 years and occasionally over 55 years.

History

The Home is a former vicarage which served St Matthews Church next door and prior to becoming a Care Home, Cotswold House was home to the studio of Animation (Stroud) Ltd which was part of the largest animation studio in the country, making such animated films as the Popeye series and Asterix. Within the last 2 years the home has undergone a £1 million refurbishment programme.

We are looking for an experienced counsellor, accredited or working towards accreditation with BACP or UKCP, you will be assessing and working with patients and families members who have been referred for counselling. The role requires an adaptable and person-centred approach and will include seeing clients at the hospice, on the ward and in their homes in the Worthing Adur, Arun and Henfield areas in West Sussex

You will also contribute to the development of services provided by the established multi-professional team.

St Barnabas House provides specialist palliative care to adults in the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas through a range of services, including in-patient care, Day Hospice and community care. We currently have the following vacancy in our in-patient unit:

Are you passionate about palliative care?

Do you have a comprehensive knowledge of pain and symptom control?

Do you possess a high level of communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team?

As a Nurse Specialist you will be working as part of the Community Palliative Care Team, providing 24 hour specialist nursing advice and support to patients, families and health-care professionals within the community setting.

Applications are welcomed from Registered Nurses with extensive palliative care experience and knowledge, preferably at Masters level. You should hold a relevant degree, or post Registration qualification in Palliative Care/Oncology.

We will support you to achieve advanced assessment skills, non-medical prescribing and DNACPR competencies.

NHS pension transferrable.

35 days annual leave, including bank holidays.

Ability to drive and car ownership are essential.

Hospice House

The Hospice House of St. Mary’s opened in fall 2009 and serves as a place of dignity, comfort and peace. At times, individuals with terminal illnesses need care that cannot be provided in their own homes. For these individuals, Hospice House offers care and a place to call home. Hospice House of St. Mary’s is the first of its kind in our county, thanks to the many community members and organizations that helped turn the vision of the house into a reality. This attractive residence, located on 23 acres of wooded land in Callaway, Maryland, offers a country kitchen, great room, dining room for special family gatherings and a meditation room. Spacious private bedrooms include a large bathroom, fully electric patient beds, a double sleeper sofa and comfortable seating, as well as French doors to private patios and/or a huge deck overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds.

When might care at the Hospice House be appropriate?

Many situations may occur in which Hospice House care would be appropriate, but the most likely scenarios may be if the patient lives alone, has a caregiver who is unable to continue care for his or her loved one at home, or if there are intense pain and/or symptom management needs.

What amenities does the Hospice House offer?

Residents and their loved ones will relax in one of our six peaceful bedroom suites complete with private bathrooms and common areas. Other amenities include a spacious community living room, an open deck with a breathtaking view of our rural 23-acre property and a beautifully landscaped memorial garden. Patient meals are prepared daily by staff or Hospice volunteers in a country-style kitchen. Meal planning is overseen by a registered dietitian.

What costs are involved?

Hospice of St. Mary’s does not turn anyone away for the inability to pay. Though hospice care is covered by most insurance policies, it does not cover the cost of room and board charges at the Hospice House. Room and board at Hospice House is assessed at a flat daily rate with a sliding scale fee available to residents of St. Mary’s county, based on the patient’s ability to pay. The sliding scale is determined by an analysis of the patient’s income vs. expenses (not taking into consideration personal property such as land or home). Our social workers will review this with the family by looking at tax returns, bank statements, sources of income, and the patient’s monthly expenses (mortgage, utility bills, credit card bills, grocery costs, etc.) to see if the patient would qualify for a reduced rate. Payments would be made by the patient directly or by a family member on the patient’s behalf. When needed, our social workers can help families in preparing documents to give financial access to the patient’s designee.

How can you help?

Volunteers are always needed to prepare meals, maintain cleanliness, complete errands and maintain the yard. Volunteers can be of any age, but must provide their own transportation. Learn more about volunteering at Hospice of St. Mary’s.

One of the oldest structures still visible is Edgbaston Hall, which was initially garrisoned during the reign of Charles I, and though it was burnt down in 1668, it was rebuilt by Sir Richard Gough less than fifty years later. The family from which Sir Richard came, the Gough-Calthorpes, were one of the prominent landowning Birmingham families over a period of several hundred years, and Edgbaston’s attractive, rural profile was largely retained by the Gough-Calthorpe family refusing to allow factories or warehouses to be built in Edgbaston, making the area a popular retreat for the middle classes. The area also boasts Edgbaston Campus, the main site of the handsome University of Birmingham, where the Art Deco, Grade II listed Barber Institute of Fine Arts, was opened by Queen Mary in 1939, and includes paintings and sketches from numerous world-renowned artists, as well as a fascinating collection of rare Byzantine and Roman coins.

Edgbaston has held on to its green and leafy character to the present day, with no less than three public gardens located in the area – the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the lesser known University of Birmingham Winterbourne Botanic Garden and Martineau Gardens, renowned for its spectacularly lush, green meadows. This Birmingham suburb is perhaps best known, though, for the stunning and historic Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Established in 1882, this home of Warwickshire Cricket Club is regarded as arguably the country’s finest cricket ground, and this seminal stadium is where in 1957, Peter May and Colin Cowdrey put on England’s highest-scoring partnership of all time; an astonishing stand of 411. Brian Lara became the world’s first batsman to score 500 runs in a non-international, first-class cricket game at Edgbaston in 1994 – a full hundred and sixty years since on from a different landmark, Birmingham Town Hall, transformed the centre of this city.

The rich and varied history of Birmingham goes back to the Saxon period, and by the late 12th century, it had developed into an important town, with King Henry II granting the Lord of the Manor, Peter de Birmingham, the right to host a weekly market in the town. Throughout the late-medieval period, Birmingham became a hub for metalworking and leather tanning, and wool was also a popular local export. Birmingham suffered during the civil war, with the King’s troops invading the city and some of them looting from homes. The people of Birmingham bravely put up defences against invasion by Royalist forces, but were overcome in May 1643. The town recovered quickly, and in the 19th century, Birmingham was a proud industrial centre, with the new Grade I listed Birmingham Town Hall (constructed in 1834), the pioneer in a trend of Roman-style architecture, and it was chosen for the premiere of Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’ and Elgar’s ‘The Dream of Gerontius’, as well as hosting Charles Dickens for a series of public readings. The culture of this impressive city is represented not only in its long history, but also the wealth of museums present-day Birmingham, such as The Pen Museum, which fascinatingly charts Birmingham’s own involvement in the development of our writing implements, and country houses like the spectacular Grade I listed Aston Hall, whose grand interior and pristine gardens are open to the public.

Washington D.C. Turned Into Virtual Fortress As 250,000 Protesters Descend Upon The City

Over the past couple of days, we’ve highlighted a couple of the mass protests that are being planned by disaffected Hillary supporters in an effort to disrupt the various Trump inaugural events that get kicked off tomorrow evening. Perhaps the most aggressive “disruptions” have been planned by groups called “DisruptJ20” and the “DC Anti-Fascist Coalition” and include plans to “paralyze the city” with “clusterfuck blockades” of bridges and tunnels, “stink bombs” in ventilation systems and chaining metro trains to station platforms to shut down rail traffic. Unfortunately for them, all of their plans were caught on tape by Project Veritas (see “New Video Exposes Anti-Trump Groups Plotting Criminal Acts To Disrupt Inauguration “) so we suspect police will be well prepared.

As Reuters points out this morning, efforts to disrupt the inaugural process will have to evade a massive force of 28,000 security personnel and miles of fencing and roadblocks fortified by sand-laden dump trucks and other heavy equipment.

Washington will turn into a virtual fortress ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on Friday, as the U.S. capital braces for more than a quarter-million protesters expected during the Republican’s swearing-in.

About 28,000 security personnel, miles (kilometers) of fencing, roadblocks, street barricades and dump trucks laden with sand will be part of the security cordon clamped around 3 square miles (almost 8 square km) of central Washington.

“If we do have a mass arrest, we’ll be able to get people processed very quickly,” he said in an interview with Washington’s NBC 4 television station.

And, if America’s millennial snowflakes are able to break through rhe police fortress they will undoubtedly be met by the “Wall of Meat “ recently promised by the “Bikers for Trump” group which has vowed to go “toe-to-toe with anyone that is going to break through any police barriers.”

Overall, the inauguration is expected to draw a crowd of 900,000 with 250,000 of those guests showing up to protest the new President-elect.

Police have forecast that some 900,000 people, both supporters and opponents, will flood Washington for the inauguration ceremony. which includes the swearing-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and a parade to the White House along streets thronged with onlookers.

About 30 groups that organizers claim will draw about 270,000 protesters or Trump backers have received permits for rallies or marches before, during and after the swearing-in. More protests are expected without permits.

By far the biggest protest will be the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday. which organizers expect to draw 250,000 people.

Luckily, at least one helpful protest group will be on hand with plans to calm down the rowdy masses by passing out 4,200 doobies.

One Washington inaugural protest will come amid a haze of pot smoke as pro-marijuana protesters show their opposition to Trump’s choice for attorney general, Alabama Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, a critic of pot legalization.

The group plans to distribute 4,200 joints at the inauguration and urge attendees to light up. Possession of small amounts of marijuana is legal in Washington, but public consumption is not.

Crime in the United States has declined substantially in recent years. Homicide, robbery, rape, and assault have all dropped sharply since highs in the early 1990s. Substance abuse has declined less sharply, however, and drug-related arrests have actually increased steadily, reaching record highs over the past few years. The number of people under some form of correctional supervision, meanwhile, has also continued to reach new highs. In 1996, over 5.5 million Americans (or about 2 percent) were in prison, jail, on probation or parole.

While criminologists (and, indeed, most Americans) agree that more needs to be done to lower the national crime rate, there are sharp differences over how this should be accomplished. Some believe that tougher enforcement policies should be pursued, including increased spending on law enforcement and prison facilities, longer sentences for offenders, and stepped up use of the death penalty for the worst crimes. Others argue that more money needs to be spent on prevention, including social services and education, to provide hope and opportunity for potential offenders.

Celebrated as one of the greatest actresses of all time, Sarah Bernhardt was also recognised for her talent in the medium of sculpture, a passion which complemented her success as a stage artist. The present marble relief of Ophelia is a rare surviving work signed by Bernhardt, and among her most important to appear at auction in recent memory. Deeply sensuous in form and conception, Ophelia testifies to the iconic actor’s considerable skill as a sculptor, while epitomising Bernhardt’s fascination with the morbid eroticism that surrounds Shakespeare’s heroine.

Born in Paris to a courtesan and an unknown father, Sarah Bernhardt received her first training as an actor at the Comédie-Française from which she was expelled, prompting a brief period of activity as a courtesan. Resuming her acting career in 1866, Bernhardt began to develop a reputation on the stage at prestigious Parisian theatres. She soon found unprecedented fame across Europe and beyond, enjoying several worldwide tours during the 1880s and 1890s. Known in particular for her magisterial portrayals of tragic characters, Sarah Bernhardt’s legendary status continued into the early 20 th century, when she starred in silent films and remained active on the stage until her death in 1923.

Sarah Bernhardt was as flamboyant a personality off the stage as she was in her dramatic roles. Famously, the actress acquired a coffin in the 1860s, in which she would pose and sleep regularly throughout her life. By thus fetishising her hypothetical corpse, Bernhardt displayed an erotically charged obsession with death that was both personal and symptomatic of her time – a time when morgues were places of public spectacle, and morbidly beautiful phenomena such as the death mask of ‘L’Inconnue de la Seine’ captivated the art scene.

It was the same 19 th -century environment which gave rise to an artistic fascination with the character of Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The tragic fate of the heroine, who becomes Hamlet’s lover but falls victim to the Prince’s plotting of revenge and, in her eventual madness, drowns in a stream, was depicted by painters such as Eugène Delacroix and, notably, John Everett Millais.

Bernhardt’s activity as a sculptor began in the 1870s with guidance from Roland Mathieu-Meusnier and Jules Franceschi. Taking a studio in 1873, she went on to model a number of highly accomplished works, such as the group Après la Tempête. which she exhibited at the Salon in 1876.

Despite being the most famous actress of her day, Sarah Bernhardt had never performed the role of Ophelia at the time her marble was conceived – it was not until 1886 that she appeared as Ophelia in a production of Hamlet. followed by a controversial turn as the eponymous character of Shakespeare’s tragedy in 1899. Yet Bernhardt’s prominent obsession with death had led to a long-lived fascination with the tragic heroine, and her sculptural representation of Ophelia became one of her most significant works. Modelled in 1880, the relief accompanied Bernhardt on her first tour of North America before being shown at the Paris Salon in 1881. Reviews of Ophelia were positive, praising it as a work ‘of which any sculptor might be proud’ (see Mason, op. cit. p. 312) – a choice of words which highlights Bernhardt’s unique status as both a woman and a full-time actress active in the profession of sculpture.

The relief is thought to exist in a handful of versions in marble, the present example being an important rediscovery. The only other version whose location is known is that in Copenhagen, which was gifted to the Royal Theatre by Bernhardt in June 1881 and remains on display in its foyer. Another version is recorded to have been a gift to the Austrian painter Hans Makart, while a third was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Photographs reveal very slight variations between the marbles, and it is possible that the present version is that which was given to Makart. Bernhardt’s personal attachment to the work is revealed by her inclusion of a photograph of Ophelia – probably the plaster – in her 1907 memoirs.

Bernhardt’s high relief represents Ophelia in bust-form, her head turned, her eyes closed, wearing a garland of flowers, and enveloped by water which merges with her tresses. The subtlety of Bernhardt’s modelling is showcased in the beautifully detailed flowers, as well as the delicate waves of the ‘glassy stream’, whose texture contrasts with the smooth and bulging form of Ophelia’s exposed right breast. Though seemingly depicted in the moment of her death, the woman’s sensuous open-mouthed expression, overt nudity, and languid pose exude an undeniable eroticism. Unaware of her suffering, the heroine appears to embrace her death as an ecstatic consummation. Bernhardt thus offers an original interpretation of the references to female sexuality and deflowering made by Shakespeare throughout the scene of Ophelia’s madness and Queen Gertrude’s speech describing her death, which makes use of sexualised imagery such as ‘long purples / That liberal shepherds give a grosser name’.

In her later theatrical interpretations of the character, Bernhardt would add a heightened level of eroticism to Ophelia’s death by choosing to appear on stage herself as the dead Ophelia – instead of the conventional coffin – in the graveyard scene, in which her brother Laertes throws himself upon her body. Mirroring her sculptural portrait of the heroine, Bernhardt was described thus in a review by Joseph Knight (1886, as quoted in Young, op. cit. p. 23): ‘She is once more seen with her face rigid as marble, and her body, covered with flowers, …’

Overall, the condition is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, in particular to the proper right shoulder and arm, to the side of the proper right breast, and to the water above the sternum and by the bottom right corner. There is minor veining to the marble, consistent with the material, including a few slightly visible yellowish veins to the proper left cheek, the neck, and the proper right breast. There are a few small chips and abrasions to the edges of the flowers, in particular to the two larger flowers lying on the proper left breast. It is possible there may be a few further minor abrasions in the flowers and hair, though these would be difficult to identify due to the extraordinary intricacy of the carving. There is some paint residue to the top of one of the flowers above the forehead, possibly concealing a minor chip. There are a few small abrasions to the edges of the relief. There are some yellowish dirt marks to the proper right side of the nose. The frame is stable, with wear consistent with age, including some stable splitting, consistent with the material, notably to the top section at the front. There are various small holes and specks of paint to the frame.

What does using home equity to consolidate your debts mean? Essentially it is using the equity in your home / refinancing your home to consolidate your debts into one payment in order to pay off your debts.

A “Home Equity Loan”, “Home Equity Line”,”refinancing your mortgage / re-mortgage” and getting a “second mortgage” are all different names for the same thing and are sometimes used as a debt consolidation option. These terms refer to the bank lending you money against the portion of your home that you own. So if the bank thinks that your home is worth $300,000 and your mortgage is for $250,000, then you own $50,000 of your house. This is called your “equity”.

Increasing your mortgage is something that the bank may let you do, by taking out a second mortgage to use up some of this equity to pay off your debts. (Check out our handy mortgage and debt consolidation calculator ). You would then have two mortgages: your first mortgage and a second mortgage which could be the debt consolidation home loan . If this is something you’re interested in doing, speak with your bank or credit union to find out how it works, to get information about the mortgage rules in Canada and if this option could work for you. Sometimes if you have bad credit. it might be difficult to get a debt consolidation loan. so using home equity could be another possibility. Selling Your House to Pay Off Debt – Talk to a Credit Counsellor About Consolidating Debts

You could also sell your house to pay off debts. though this should be a last resort and pertain to your situation, e.g. down-sizing in retirement. There are things to know before using your home equity line. so to choose the best way / option that fits your situation, especially if you’re retired and your income has changed, talk to a trusted, accredited non-profit Credit Counsellor.

Interest Rates for Second Mortgages – Can Be Higher Than First, Talk to Your Bank About Using Your Home Equity

Sometimes you can get the same interest rate on your second mortgage as you got on your first mortgage, but this isn’t always possible (talk to your lender to find out more). If you do have to pay a higher interest rate on your second mortgage, you can set up the due date / term to correspond with the due date / term for your first mortgage. This will allow you to combine them at the bank’s best interest rate when they need to be renewed.

Re-mortgaging may also be an option that your lender can explain to you. It may allow you to keep a low interest rate, only have one mortgage payment and still give you funds to pay off other debts.

History of Mortgage Rates in Canada – Declining Since 1980’s

Ever since the early 1980’s mortgage rates have been declining in Canada. They peaked at over 20% at that time but are now typically offered in the 3% – 6% range. It is wise to remain mindful of the fact that we are currently living with historically low interest rates. This means that we cannot count on them to stay this low forever. The average five year mortgage rate over the past 60 years has been 8.95%. So if you are considering refinancing your home, make sure you can afford an “average” interest rate of 9% in the long term.

Finance Companies and Sub Prime Lenders or Loan Companies Offering Mortgages – Higher Interest Rates than Banks

Finance companies and sub-prime lenders also offer mortgages. Their interest rates will almost always be higher than the bank’s and can often range between 14% – 30%. These rates are a lot higher because these companies tend to lend money / cash to people in financial situations that involve more risk than banks usually want to take on.

High interest loans like these can be used as a tool to get you from point A to point B, but you should do your best to find a better arrangement as fast as possible. It is very hard to get ahead paying really high interest rates.

Advantages of Using a Second Mortgage to Consolidate Debt

  1. The interest rates are typically low
  2. Flexible payment arrangements. You can usually extend your amortization (the length of time required to pay back the loan) to create an ideal monthly payment

Disadvantages of a Second Mortgage

  1. You must have enough equity in your home as well as income to make both mortgage payments
  2. You may be charged a number of fees for the costs involved in setting up a second mortgage
  3. Banks often don’t like to do small second mortgages. $10,000 may be the minimum that they will consider

As a real estate investor and coach, I’m always on the lookout for the latest investment opportunities. A lot of the times my students ask me, “Marko Rubel, how do you spot a real estate investment opportunity? What’s the latest out there on the market?” A lot of it is all about research and, lately, there’s been one popular housing trend I believe has investment potential that hasn’t yet been captured.

It has been called the “Tiny House Movement,” and boy is it ever a movement. The latest real estate trend sweeping the nation is a very small thing: tiny houses (also known as micro houses, compact houses, mini houses, and little houses). Ranging between a compact 100 square feet to the more “spacious” 500 square feet, the tiny home is a movement centered around downsizing and the notion that you should be able to afford the home you live in.

The tiny housing market has quickly evolved from a quirky project to a serious undertaking. As more and more tiny homeowners share details on their comfortable lives in their tiny homes, many people — particularly Millennials — are following suit. Already, there have been documentaries and a docuseries about the tiny house movement, and new blogs and websites dedicated to tiny housing and their homeowners are appearing every day. There are even workshops teaching people how to build their own tiny house.

As 2015 has proven thus far to be a seller’s market, and with properties only increasing in price, the tiny house market will only continue to grow this year. Like other trends, one this influential must be worth considering. Lately, I’ve heard several people ask, “Marko Rubel, what what is the investment potential for tiny houses? Should I consider investing in this new market?”

The answer is yes, you should certainly consider whether it’s a good move for you. First, let’s look at the appeal of building and owning a tiny house. A tiny house costs anywhere between $10,000 and $40,000 to build, with the average being just $23,000. At such low prices, it’s no wonder that 68 percent of tiny house owners don’t have a mortgage. It’s been estimated that Millennials are the newest and largest group of potential homebuyers. However, more than 50 percent rent because they can’t afford the initial down payment. Tiny housing, as a result, can be an appealing alternative, particularly since many Millennials live alone or don’t have children.

Rather than buy a piece of property, which is often expensive, many tiny homeowners rent land. More and more landowners are specifically renting out pieces of their property to multiple tiny homeowners, easily and quickly making a profit.

The tiny house market presents two major investment opportunities.

First, if you are limited on funding, building and selling or renting tiny houses is an option. Particularly if you are a contractor or work closely with one, you can build tiny houses for less and sell them at a profit. My Husband was here for less than 24 hours before he passed and I was very disappointed with the lack of care and compassioned we received. It was a beautiful room and very quiet but that is all that I can recommend. Received a phone call a week later to pick up his personal items left there, we did not bring anything and he was not there long enough to require any items, but I proceeded to drive there to pick up the items. None of the items were his, they belong to a female patient and was in a very dirty padded lunch bag that even had dried up French fries in it and reeked of perfume. So very disappointed and hurt.

    Art therapy is proven in palliative circles to help reduce anxiety and provide some means of emotional expression. Emily’s House has trained staff and volunteers as well as physical resources such as an art room and art supplies to allow for satisfying creative exploration. It is one of the children’s favorite therapies!

    Play therapy at Emily’s house provides children opportunity to express their feelings and emotions through play. Children are provided with play therapy techniques and materials that will encourage them to process and express what their unique experience is in the universal language of children’s play.

    Like art therapy, music therapy is intended to take minds off the reality of pain or suffering into something beautiful, fun and creative. Many of our young clients have enjoyed the attention of our in-house music therapist who encourages the children to discover the joy and relaxation and expression of feelings through musical expression.

    A controlled multi sensory environment is a therapy for children with developmental disabilities and/or complex care conditions, and consists of placing them in a soothing and stimulating environment, called the “Snoezelen room”. These rooms are specially designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, using lighting effects, colour, sounds, music, scents, etc. The child is accompanied by trained staff or a volunteer.

    At Emily’s House we aim to provide spiritual care according to a family’s context and need. Questions about life, death and spirituality often emerge during times of crises such as end-of-life. For some, spirituality is expressed in the form of religion and others with a less formal approach. The important thing is that the client family directs the type of spiritual services needed for the child and we aim to deliver compassionate care accordingly. Emily’s House has professional Chaplains on staff who are able to either provide spiritual care directly or indirectly by making appropriate referrals. A quiet meditation room is provided at Emily’s House for client and staff use.

    Many client families appreciate access to bereavement support counselling, either individual and/or group. It is an extremely difficult and isolating transition between the intensity of caring for a sick child to grieving their loss.     I m writing about this place because if you have someone near and dear to you who needs hospice care, this is the best place to be.

    Not long ago my grandpa came her for hospice care when he was given about 5 days to live. Although our time here was sorrowful, it was a great place to spend time with my grandpa and family during his last days.

    The staff was incredible. They truly cared for my grandpa and even our family. They helped make him and us comfortable. The rooms were large with two couches and several evening we fit about 10 people in the room comfortably. They were even able to bring a cot into the room for my grandma so she could sleep there the last few days.

    The facility is very nice, comfortable and clean. The Hospice House also provides free soup made in house daily. It s very yummy and the chef has even won awards in KC. It s very nice to know you could go there to spend time with family and not have to worry about where to get a meal.

    I would recommend this facility to anyone who has family who needs this care.

    Vitas House Hospice was a dream of Dr. George Laquis for many years before it became a reality. Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society s Chairman had been inspired by the works and words of two women who cared about the terminally ill: Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, who wrote the ground-breaking book on Death and Dying, and Cicely Saunders, a British nurse who recognized that too many people were dying in pain and who were ignored by the medical establishment. At age 47, Cicely Saunders became a doctor and dedicated her life and knowledge to humanizing the system. She is the founder of the modern hospice movement.

    From a dream came the reality that is Vitas House Hospice. It is run by an independent group of people and funded by generous donations from individuals, businesses, families of patients, funeral collections, etc.

    Music therapy is the use of music within a therapeutic relationship to address a patient’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. It is highly personalized and the focus may be on the patient’s physical state, their emotional or spiritual concerns, or on supporting family or social gatherings.

    Pet Therapy

    Seasons Hospice’s therapy dog program serves to provide comfort, support, love, and animal companionship to patients, their families, and staff through the use of highly trained therapy dog teams acting in a volunteer capacity.

    Registered therapy dog teams comprised of a trained therapy dog and trained volunteer handler, will visit hospice patients at the Seasons Hospice House upon a referral/recommendation from Seasons Hospice staff and permission from patient and/or family.

    Bereavement Support

    Bereavement support is available at the Hospice House to help patients and families understand and manage their experiences of loss, change, grief, and mourning while providing support and hope.
