What is “Annuity?”

An annuity is defined as a series of equal cash amounts (cash flows, payments, deposits, etc). For example, if I were to promise to pay you $100 per year for the next 3 years, that arrangement could be considered to be an annuity.

From your perspective, the periodic amounts represent deposits, as in, you can deposit the amounts into an interest earning account as you receive them. From my perspective, the periodic amounts represent payments, as in, I must remove the amounts from an interest earning account in order to pay them to you. This explains why annuity amounts (cash flows) can be referred to as deposits and payments at the same time.

What is Future Value of An Annuity?

Using the above example, if you were to invest each of the $100 annual payments at a compounding interest rate (earning interest on interest paid), the future value of that series of cash inflows would grow with each passing compounding and payment interval. The total amount this series of equal amounts would grow to after three years would be the future value of the annuity. So what would be the future value amount? That depends on the agreed upon interest rate and on whether or not we agreed to an ordinary annuity or to an annuity due.

Annuity Due Vs. Ordinary Annuity

Continuing with our example, if I agreed to make the $100 annual payments at the beginning of each year, our arrangement would be considered to be an annuity due. On the other hand, if I made the payments to you at the end of each year, our arrangement would be considered to be an ordinary annuity.

So which is better? From your perspective, an annuity due would be better since you could earn interest on the first year’s payment for the entire year. From my perspective, an ordinary annuity would be better since I could earn interest on the $100 for a full year before I made the payment to you.

So in your case, if you were earning an annual interest rate of 6% on the deposited $100 payments, the future value of an annuity due arrangement would be $337.46, whereas the future value of an ordinary annuity arrangement would be $318.36 ($19.10 less).

Why is Future Value of An Annuity Important for You to Understand?

The understanding of future value, both for lump sums and for annuities, is absolutely critical to making financial decisions that will serve to maximize the emotional returns on the money you earn. Why? Because in order to make emotionally profitable decisions (decisions that result in more good feelings that bad feelings), you need to be aware of, and be able to accurately forecast, what you are giving up in return for what you are getting.

In terms of spending money, what you give up is referred to as financial opportunity costs, and future value calculations are what helps you to determine the financial opportunity costs of choosing one alternative financial decision over another. And of those alternatives, the ones that tend to have the biggest effects on your emotional profitability, are those that involve spending money for non-essential expenditures that lose their value with time and/or use.

Example of Opportunity Cost Using Future Value Calculations

Suppose you are considering entering into a data plan for your smart phone that will cost you $35 per month. In order to make an informed decision, you need to be aware of and give equal weight to the financial opportunity costs that will come with a monthly expenditure of $35.00 for a non-essential expendable.

If you have at least 30-years left before you can retire, and could earn 6% on the $35 payments if you invested them, future value calculations will tell you that the financial opportunity cost of paying for a data plan for the next 30-years will be $22,733.82 (future value of $35,333.82 less $12,000.00, or 360-$35 payments). That is how much interest earnings you will be giving up by paying for the data plan for the next 30-years (of course, your loss will be the data plan company’s gain).

And that’s only considering just one of the possible hundreds of the non-essential expenditures you likely make on a regular basis. After all, if you spend more for an essential than the bare minimum necessary (buying non-generic, paying finance charges on purchases, paying inflated prices, etc.), then these excess essential expenditures should be considered to be non-essentials as well.

During this time, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the clinical care and psychosocial support available through hospice care. Once the paperwork and review is finalized, your hospice care begins.

    Optum Hospice Care begins its visits almost immediately. Members of the interdisciplinary care team, such as the hospice physician and nurse case manager, nursing assistants, chaplain, social worker and trained volunteers will be in touch to make sure you get the care you need. Optum also manages ordering and setting up of any necessary medical equipment, such as a nursing bed, or medications so you and your loved ones can focus on other things, such as spending time together.

    The cost of hospice care, including medical equipment and prescriptions related to the terminal illness, is typically covered by Medicare. Medicaid and most private insurance plans.

    A hospice doctor is part of your medical team. You can also choose to include your regular doctor or a nurse practitioner on your medical team as the attending medical professional who supervises your care.

    In addition, a hospice nurse and doctor are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to give you and your family support and care when you need it.

    Only your hospice doctor and your regular doctor (if you have one) – not a nurse practitioner that you’ve chosen to serve as your attending medical professional – can certify that you’re terminally ill and have a life expectancy of 6 months or less.

    If you need to get inpatient care at a hospital, your hospice provider must make the arrangements. The cost of your inpatient hospital care is covered by your hospice benefit, but paid to your hospice provider. They have a contract with the hospital and they work out the payment between them. However, if you go to the hospital and your hospice provider didn’t make the arrangements, you might be responsible for the entire cost of your hospital care.

    Where you get hospice care

    The hospice benefit allows you and your family to stay together in the comfort of your home unless you need care in an inpatient facility. If your hospice team determines that you need inpatient care, they will make the arrangements for your stay.

    How long you can get hospice care

    Hospice care is for people with a life expectancy of 6 months or less (if the disease runs its normal course). If you live longer than 6 months, you can still get hospice care, as long as the hospice medical director or other hospice doctor recertifies that you’re terminally ill (with a life expectancy of 6 months or less).

    • You can get hospice care for two 90-day benefit periods, followed by an unlimited number of 60-day benefit periods.
    • You have the right to change providers only once during each benefit period.
    • At the start of each period, the hospice medical director or other hospice doctor must recertify that you’re terminally ill (with a life expectancy of 6 months or less), so you can continue to get hospice care.

    Finding a hospice program

    Consider these questions when choosing your hospice care providers:

    • Is the hospice provider certified and licensed by the state or federal government?
    • Does the hospice provider train caregivers to care for you at home?
    • How will your doctor work with the doctor from the hospice provider?
    • How many other patients are assigned to each member of the hospice care staff?
    • Will the hospice staff meet regularly with you and your family to discuss care?
    • How does the hospice staff respond to after-hour emergencies?
    • What measures are in place to ensure hospice care quality?
    • What services do hospice volunteers offer? Are they trained?

    The hospice provider you choose must be Medicare-approved to get Medicare payment. To find out if a certain hospice provider is Medicare-approved, ask your doctor, the hospice provider, your state hospice organization, or your state health department.

    If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare health plan

    Once you choose hospice care, your hospice benefit should cover everything you need. Original Medicare covers all Medicare-covered services you get while in hospice care, even if you were previously in a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare health plan. If your plan covers extra services that aren’t covered by Original Medicare (like dental and vision benefits), your plan will continue to cover these extra services as long as you continue to pay your premium.

    If you choose to leave hospice care your Medicare Advantage Plan will not start again until the first of the following month.

    Care for your other conditions

    Your hospice benefit covers your care and you shouldn’t have to go outside of hospice to get care (except in very rare situations). Once you choose hospice care, your hospice benefit should cover everything you need.

    You must pay the deductible and coinsurance amounts for all Medicare-covered services to treat health problems that aren’t part of your terminal illness and related conditions. You also must continue to pay Medicare premiums, if necessary.

    Stopping hospice care

    If your health improves or your illness goes into remission, you may no longer need hospice care.

    You always have the right to stop hospice care at any time. If you choose to stop hospice care, you will be asked to sign a form that includes the date your care will end.

    You shouldn’t be asked to sign any forms about stopping your hospice care at the time you start hospice. Stopping hospice care is a choice only you can make, and you should not sign or date any forms until the actual date that you want your hospice care to stop.

    If you stop your hospice care, you’ll get the type of Medicare coverage you had before you chose a hospice program, like Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), or another type of Medicare health plan. If you’re eligible, you can go back to hospice care at any time.

Now that we ve got that out of the way, let s get down to business.

    Your wireless router is a prime target for hackers wanting to infiltrate your network or freeload off your Wi-Fi connection.

    Here are some things you can do to make your wireless router harder to hack:

    Enable WPA2 Wireless Encryption and Create a Strong SSID Network Name and Strong Pre-shared Key

    If you aren t using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) encryption to protect your wireless network then you might as well leave your front door wide open because hackers can virtually walk right into your network. If you re using outdated Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security, which is easily cracked in seconds by most hackers. you should consider upgrading to WPA2. Older routers may need a firmware upgrade to add WPA2 functionality. Check your router manufacturer s manual to learn how to enable WPA2 wireless encryption on your router.

    You will also need to make a strong SSID (wireless network name). If you are using your router s default network name (i.e. Linksys, Netgear, DLINK, etc) then you are making it easier for hackers to hack your network.

    Using a default SSID or a common one helps hackers in their quest to crack your encryption because they can use pre-built rainbow tables associated with common SSID names to crack your wireless encryption.

    Create a lengthy and random SSID name even though it might be hard to remember. You should also use a strong password for your pre-shared key to further discourage hacking attempts.

    Turn on Your Wireless Router s Firewall

    This helps to prevent someone from driving by your house and accessing the administrative functions of your router if they ve compromised your Wi-Fi encryption.

    Given enough time and resources a hacker might still be able to hack into your network, but taking the steps above will make your network a harder target which will hopefully frustrate a hacker and cause them to move on to an easier target.

    Case Study 1

    As for a client getting his name off the sex offender registry, that takes a combination of the following: A thorough knowledge of a complicated area of the law; intense scrutiny of all the case facts and the biographical facts of the client; imagination; resourcefulness; targeted persistence and a clean record of the client since the date of the entry of the judgment for the sexual offense. There is an interrelationship between the federal statutory scheme and any state statutory scheme. An effective legal strategy is to use the federal statutory scheme as leverage for the petition to get off the state registry. Under the federal statute there are three levels of severity of sexual offense:

    Tier 1 – In general, non-violent sexual contact;
    Tier 2 – Non-violent but serious commercial involvement with sex, such as sex trafficking;
    Tier 3 – Aggravated sexual assault involving violence, kidnaping, etc.

    The time periods required to stay on the federal sexual registry are as follows: Tier 1 – 15 years; Tier 2 – 25 years; Tier 3 – Lifetime. Under the federal statute (Sexual Offender Registration Act, also known as SORNA), one can file an application to reduce the period of time that one’s name must remain on the sexual offender federal registry.

    Four things are necessary in order to apply to shorten the above referenced periods of time under SORNA:

    1. The sex offender, for a ten-year period, has not committed any crime punishable by over one year’s imprisonment, since the date of his sentence ( e.g. custody, probation, supervised release), (Tier 1); or 25 years (Tier 3); the statute does not provide for a reduction of the time period of 25 years (Tier 2);
    2. The sex offender has committed no additional sex crime other than the original one;
    3. The sex offender has successfully completed a certified sexual rehabilitation course that is accepted by the federal government;
    4. The sex offender has successfully completed probation, parole or supervised release.

    A successful legal strategy a sex offender lawyer could employ is to apply for the reduction in the time period under SORNA and then, once granted, file the petition in the applicable state court for getting completely off the state sex offender registry.

    This whole process takes time and patience, but the upside is that a person doubles his chances for a successful petition in state court if he first gets the federal motion granted, as described above. The downside, of course, is that the offender may have to wait a few years. However, given the alternative ( e.g. in Texas) of lifetime registration, and the greatly improved chance of getting the state petition granted after the federal motion is granted, it is well worth any wait that may be required, and one can be productive during the waiting period, as noted below.

    During the waiting period before filing, there is much preparation that needs to be accomplished, such as the following: The Complainant can be approached and an affidavit obtained from her/him consenting to the applicant getting off probation, but this is a delicate process, and needs to be approached very cautiously; numerous letters of recommendation, especially from employers, should be obtained. However, for those letters to have maximum effect, they must contain specific comments about certain categories. Polygraphs can be taken regarding the facts and circumstances of the case and/or the rehabilitation that has been accomplished; the details and the credentials of the programs that have been taken or, in the case of a residential, enrolled in, are very important; a detailed employment history and current detailed employment, specifying the skill and level of responsibility required, are critical; past accomplishments where the offender has shown a civic responsibility to nonprofit or charitable institutions on a sustained basis is helpful; a carefully worded statement from the offender documenting his self-knowledge, his rehabilitation and his plans for the future is vital; the detailed clinical report of a Ph.D. psychologist who specializes in sex offender evaluation is a must; and, there are up to a dozen other important items that will make the federal motion, and, later, the state petition, compelling.

    Most, if not all, of the items noted above can be used in support of both the federal motion and the state petition. Once the federal motion is granted, if the items are to be used for the state petition, they should be appropriately updated. The legal relief available under both the federal SORNA and Art. 62.401, et seq. of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, exists for a reason: The U.S. Congress and the applicable state legislature have determined that it is appropriate to give relief to those who have earned it. The successful lawyer will present an extremely well-documented and compelling case, showing by clear and convincing evidence why the client deserves the privilege of receiving legal relief, as provided by both federal and state law.

    Are online students eligible for financial aid?

    A driving factor in the increasing popularity of online courses is the cost. Federal financial aid is available to students attending any regionally accredited school, including accredited online programs. To be considered for this federal aid, students need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Most aid is awarded in the form of loans, such as Stafford loans, which can be subsidized or unsubsidized, or Perkins loans. Stafford loans are fixed-rate loans available to all students enrolled at least part-time. In the case of subsidized Stafford loans, the government will make interest payments on your behalf while you are still in school. However, with unsubsidized loans, you will have to make your own interest payments while you are still attending school.

    Perkins loans are low-interest loans offered to students who are enrolled at least part-time and show great financial need. Students with Perkins loans will not need to make payments while they are still in school at least half-time. In addition, federal grants, such as Pell grants, are also available for those who demonstrate financial need. Unlike a loan, grants do not need to be repaid.

    Students enrolled in online courses may also qualify for a number of non-federal student loans, as well as scholarships and grants. In fact, most students who attend online colleges receive some form of financial aid to help fund their education. For example, more than 75% of students at Capella University receive federal financial aid, student loans, and/or scholarships, according to the school s website .

    Even without financial aid, online programs can be less expensive than campus programs. Though the price difference between online and campus-based tuition may seem minimal at first, the difference becomes clear after considering the additional fees associated with campus learning. While online learners only pay for their courses, campus-based learners must often also pay for housing, dining, and parking fees. For instance, out-of-state tuition at the University of Michigan is about $34,937 per year, according to College Navigator. Students must then add on the cost of housing, which is an additional $8,924 on average, as well as a meal plan, which is about another $2,000. This pushes the cost of attendance to about $45,861 for the academic year.

    In addition, dormitories will need to be furnished and those who wish to attend out-of-state schools must factor in the cost of relocating. In the end, attending a campus-based program could end up costing students more than $10,000 on top of tuition. However, do factor in how much Internet service, a computer, and rent would cost as well if you are doing your online class at home, as this could also influence how much your online course will cost.

    Compare that to the base cost of online programs, and it is easy to see why online education is typically considered more affordable, especially if a student can also take advantage of various financial aid options available.

    The best way to beat one is NOT to get one, so we’ll deal with that first.

    1. Don’t act like a dick. If you act like a belligerent idiot, you will end up with a lot more than just a speeding ticket. More likely you will end up in jail with your car impounded!

    2. Do not admit guilt. Say nothing, if possible. The cop can use your admission against you in court. Better to say nothing or act dumb (see below )

    WHAT YOU MUST DO:

    1. Say yes Officer, no Officer to everything. You want this over with – fast!

    2. Act stupid. It helps, even cops don’t want to torture the stupid!

    3. Act scared! As if the tickets means the end of your life! Again, cops waver at this point. They may not write it if they feel sorry for you.

    4. Act ignorant about what you did. Even if they give you a ticket at least you didn’t admit you were speeding, which they will use in court against you later.

    IF YOU GET A TICKET:

    1. Don’t argue the situation out on the road – you will not win! You don’t want them to remember you when you do go to court. SAY NOTHING – then drive away.

    2. Remember everything about the situation! How much traffic, the weather, which lane you were in. Write it down if you are too stoned to remember this stuff.

    AFTER YOU GET THE TICKET/PRE-TRIAL PLEA OR APPEARANCE

    1. Always plead ‘not guilty.’ This may be a pre-trial appearance, or you may be able to send in the ticket with ‘not guilty’ plea. Try to delay a pre-trial appearance if possible. There will be a specified date if you have to mail in the plea.

    AS THE COURT DATE APPROACHES:

    1. Very important. DELAY, DELAY, DELAY. Keep putting off that court date! You don’t want to go to court! You want to make it so the cop thinks the case is so far in the past he’ll never remember anything. A small story: When John Hussar, the director of The Blur of Insanity went to college he got a speeding ticket (90 mph in a 55 mph zone) from a New York State Trooper. He successfully put off going to court for two and a half years (mainly by lying about going on various trips to Europe). When he final did show up in court he discovered that the Trooper had been transferred out of the area! The case was immediately dismissed!
    The Lesson? The longer you wait the better chance the cop won’t show up!

    2. Request information (optional, it can work for you, or make them want to nail you more!) Also they may or may not give you any of this depending on local laws!:

    a.Copies of manufacturers names, including makes, models and serial numbers of all radar/laser guns in use by the Town/City/State Police Department.

    b. Copies of manufacturers recommended maintenance for all of the above stated radar guns.

    c. Copies of any manufacturer literature as it relates to the correct use, including but not limited to mounting, aiming, weather and traffic limitations, for all radar guns in use by the Town/City/State Police Department.

    d. A copy of the past six months’ maintenance records for all of the above stated radar guns, including, but not limited to, calibration specifications.

    e. A copy of the Authorized Certification of Training, issued to the Officer who gave you the ticket, in the proper use of all radar guns in use by that Town/City/State Police Department he/she works for.

    f. A copy of the patrol car assignments for the date you got the ticket.

    This should give you something to work with, and also make the cop not want to show up to deal with all this crap!

    COURT – A FRIGHTENING PLACE

    What happens in court:

    • Go check in with the clerk.
    • See if your officer arrives, if he doesn’t that will often be the end right there.
    • The judge will call your case.
    • The officer will testify first.
    • You then question the officer
    • You then call any witnesses you have
    • The officer can make a closing statement
    • You can make a closing statement
    • The judge decides.

    1. Wear a suit, if you own one. If you look like a derelict, you will be treated like a derelict. We don’t care if you think that is unfair! The world is not fair – grow up.

    2. Be nice. Again, being a dick will just get you in trouble and solves nothing.

    3. IT is the officers duty to prove you GUILTY. If he fails to prove your guilt the case will be dismissed.

    BE confident that you will win the case!

    Check the actual wording of the code you violated. If the officer fails to prove guilt in any part of the code then you should be dismissed.

    BEFORE an officer can use the radar/laser reading as evidence, he has to establish a few things Jurisdiction Certification, up to date, accurate, traffic and engineering survey, radar/laser properly calibrated, tuning forks calibrated (with radar), FCC license, radar/laser unit appears on that FCC license

    If the officer attempts to use the radar reading before establishing those things above, politely interrupt and say objection your honor, inadmissible evidence.

    Then tell the judge why. If the officer fails to prove your guilt at the end of his testimony don’t question him, move to have the case dismissed. And explain what he failed to prove.

    If the officer was moving when was his speedometer last calibrated? Have the records to see if he contradicts himself. If officer guesses your speed. throw something and ask him how fast it was going. If he is off by 3 MPH at 15 MPH speed then think about how far off he is at 35 MPH.

    Were the speed limits prima facie? or Absolute? If prima facie then prove the speed you were traveling at wasn’t unsafe.

    ASK questions like: what color clothes was I wearing? did I have any passengers?

    What was the weather like? To see how well versed the officer is.

    See if you can attend traffic school in exchange for a dismissal of the charge (never bothers your insurance.)

    OFTEN the worst part of a ticket is the increase in your insurance. By beating the ticket you don’t have to worry about that.

    Hopefully the cop won’t show up – in which case you will ask that the case be dismissed – 99% of the time it will.

    Anyway – there you have it. Good Luck. And if you beat a speeding ticket with any of this advice you have to make ten people you know go and see the movie!

These extras, ranging from wireless Internet access to loaner books to exercise rooms, are designed to appeal to all types of travelers. Your job is to decide what features are important to you and to base your motel choice on them.

    Let’s take a look at factors that might affect your decision.

    Cost

    Motel prices vary drastically from place to place. In New York City, $200 doesn’t go very far.

    In some areas of the U.S. however, $200 will buy you an extremely comfortable room at the best place in town. Researching lodging costs for a particular area will help you decide how much to spend on your motel room.

    Many travel websites, such as Kayak and Travelzoo. can help you compare motel prices and shop for the best deal. Guidebooks, which often contain useful maps, can help you find the safest part of town or the neighborhood closest to the sights you plan to visit. Use a combination of websites and travel guides to determine which motels fit your budget.

    Motel Chain / Brand Loyalty

    I’ve been lucky enough to have stayed at several excellent motels in the last few years. I tend to book future stays with the chains that please me and avoid staying at chains where I’ve had bad experiences, regardless of cost or amenities. Most of the time, this strategy pays off. If the motel chain in question offers frequent flier miles or some other kind of traveler rewards program, that’s even better.

    Distance to Sights / Destinations

    If you’ve set your heart on spending the day at Washington, D.C.’s monuments and memorials, you’ll be very disappointed with a motel 50 miles from the National Mall. Always consider the distance and travel time to the sights you want to see when you choose a motel. You may pay a little – or even a lot – more to stay near your top five sights, but you won’t have to worry about getting to your must-see spots on time or fret over where to park your car.

    Safety

    In large cities, safety considerations are extremely important. Never skimp on accommodations if doing so puts your safety at risk. If you aren’t sure where the safe areas are, get some guidebooks and read about your destination. Don’t trust online advertisements; ask friends who’ve traveled to your destination, read independent reviews or talk with a travel agent before booking your room.

    Motel Features

    Most travelers have “make or break” lodging requirements. For me, a nonsmoking room is a must-have. Make a list of motel room features that are important to you. If you can’t get information on motel features from guidebooks or websites, call the motel you’re considering and ask the front desk staff to describe their property.

    Motels offer a variety of amenities, including:

    Is parking free? Can you see the parking lot from your room, or do you park underground?

    If you use a wheelchair, does the motel offer rooms that meet your needs? (Tip: Call each motel to learn about doorway widths, bathroom sizes and other important factors; each motel chain’s definition of “accessible” is different.)

    If you’re traveling with grandchildren or enjoy relaxing by the pool, consider a motel with an indoor or outdoor pool. Splashing around or swimming a few laps can be a great way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

    If you’re traveling with your beloved dog, ask if pets are allowed. Websites such as PetsWelcome and DogFriendly can help you find motels that accept pets.

    If you prefer nonsmoking rooms or if you need a room with twin beds, you’ll need to ask about specific room availability. Some amenities, such as rollaway beds or infant cribs, may be available on a “request only” basis. Be sure you understand the motel’s policies before you book your room.

    Increasingly, travelers look for Internet access when they’re on the road. If you need wireless access to stay in touch with your family or communicate with your office, don’t forget to ask about Internet access. You may want to discuss this topic directly with the motel s staff.

    Many motels offer a late check-in option if you guarantee your reservation with a credit card. Of course, if you don’t show up, the motel will bill you anyway. Late check-in is especially helpful if you’re traveling a long distance or in bad weather to get to your motel. You’ll have peace of mind knowing your room will be held all night if necessary.

    Online reviews, such as those at TripAdvisor and Hotels.com. can be very helpful when you’re trying to decide which motel to choose. You may find that certain individual reviews are extremely positive or negative. It’s important to consider all reviews when selecting your motel, since some travelers are very particular and others will give any decent room a top rating.

    Don’t forget to ask family, friends and colleagues for their recommendations.

    The Final Decision

    In the end, it’s up to you to decide which features matter most. If you have questions, call the motel s front desk and discuss your concerns with the manager. Carefully read the motel s cancellation policy before you make your reservation.

He is a veteran released on an honorable discharge, so it is possible he didn’t need this, but who knows at this point.

    Single-ply membranes are widely used for commercial roofing applications. The ease of installation, ability to solve complex roofing details and energy benefits have led to their overwhelming success. However, it is important to continually perform visual inspections as often as needed, depending on roof use and traffic, to assure it is functioning properly. Upon finding any punctures or tears, a temporary, simple Wikipedia: self adhering butyl tape patch that may be applied to repair the membrane until a patch can be more permanently heat “welded” in place.

    Steps Edit

    Identify the problem. Find the injury in the single-ply membrane.

    Decide on the part to be cut away. Remove damaged membrane and insulation.

    Replace insulation if needed with like material. Here insulation was used as a kind of underlayment.

    Clean the membrane where the patch is to be applied. Start with a simple, all-purpose cleaner/degreaser, such as 409 or Simple Green.

    Remove any soapy film. Rinse and thoroughly dry the area to be patched.

    Line up patch correctly. Work across peeling away release film in stages while pressing in place as you go.

    • One source of this material may be a building supply center or a recreational vehicle supply store.

    Roll the butyl backed tape firmly into place. This requires utilizing a firm roller to assure contact.

    Caulk around the edges of the patch with a bead of polyurethane sealant and cover the seam consistently. Notice on the left where the sealant is beginning to be spread only slightly to be sure it is still thick but well guided into place.

But when it comes to hotels and accommodation, do comparison websites really get you the best deal? Before you book your next vacation, read this guide to make sure you don t get ripped off!

    Tips to get the Best Hotel Deal

    • Comparison sites like Expedia, Travelocity and Hotels.com are good for doing initial research and comparing your options.
    • Once you narrow down your choices to the hotel (or few hotels) that you would like to stay at, head to the hotel s own website to see if their price is the same. Often they will have extra room types or prices that they don t supply to comparison websites.
    • Look on the hotel s website to see if they have any special deals or coupons.
    • Watch out for booking fees and credit card fees. This is not exclusive to the comparison sites; some hotels also charge for this.
    • Check cancellation and amendments policies before you book. This applies to both comparison websites and the hotel s own website. Check to see if they charge you a fee for amending or canceling bookings. Your travel insurance may cover this, but it s easier to get your money back straight from the hotel.

    Let s Look at a Real Life Example

    The following example is searching for the same hotel on various websites. In each case I ll choose the cheapest available rate and highlight any extra costs for the booking. The hotel I m looking at is in Australia (my home country), but I ve tried it for several different countries around the world and got similar results.

    As you can see, even with the credit card surcharge, the hotel s own website worked out cheaper in this case, as they had rooms that were not advertised on the comparison websites. I should point out that Mantra is quite a large chain of hotels in Australia, so they have some strict terms around cancellation and other fees. I ve found that if you re booking at much smaller independent hotels or B Bs that you can often negotiate much better rates by going direct.

    Does charcoal *really* whiten your teeth?

    Charcoal has quickly become the go-to ingredient to whiten teeth. And if YouTube or Instagram testimonials are anything to go by, the answer to it working is a resounding ‘yes’. But does it really work the miracles that it promises as a natural teeth whitener and is it safe to use? We spoke to dentists Dr Adam Thorne REGENERATE Enamel Science Dental Ambassador and Dr Richard Marques to find out whether charcoal really is an effective teeth whitener and explore whether other natural whitening products actually work.

    How does charcoal actually work?

    The most effective type of charcoal is the activated form. a reheated, oxidised version of the charcoal that you put on the BBQ. The theory is that activated charcoal has an adhesive quality that binds to everything in its path, such as stains, tartar and bacteria, and works by drawing out and absorbing toxins and chemicals into its millions of tiny pores. Dr Thorne says:

    “Activated charcoal’s enormous surface area is dotted with the numerous nooks and crannies that draw in and trap toxic substances including stains on teeth. It can be brushed on or rinsed around the teeth.”

    But by all means don’t use charcoal from the BBQ, the non-activated form, as it can be toxic, warns Dr Marques.

    Women with better oral hygiene live longer, study says

    But does charcoal really whiten teeth and is it safe?

    “Charcoal works and is an effective way to help clean and whiten your teeth. It’s one of my top tips on whitening your teeth at home,” says Dr Marques. He recommends using activated charcoal powder, toothpaste or mouthwash.

    However, some dentists warn against using this method of teeth whitening and say that charcoal may lead to enamel deterioration and tooth erosion. According to Dr Adam, there’s actually no evidence to date that activated charcoal does any good for your teeth.

    “I’d be concerned about the potential damage that the grainy, gritty substance can do to your teeth and gums – and like any abrasive, I’d be worried about the effects on the gums and enamel on the teeth. We simply don’t know about the safety and effectiveness of it. If you want a gleaming white smile, I’d always recommend talking to your dentist first about using traditional whitening toothpaste for surface stains or specific whitening treatments for deeper stains or discolouration.”

    8 myths and facts about natural whitening products

    When it comes to teeth whitening, Brits spend more than 100 million a year on products alone. We all know the usual culprits that stain our teeth, such as smoking, drinking red wine and coffee, but what’s the truth behind natural teeth whitening products?

    1. Strawberries: FACT

    Strawberries have an abundance of a ‘magic’ malic acid, which naturally cleans and whitens the teeth, even though they’re red, advises Dr Marques.

    They do however contain citric acid, which can weaken the surface hardness of your teeth, says Dr Thorne. But the riper the strawberry becomes, the higher the concentration of malic acid compared to the more harmful citric acid. He recommends:

    “So if you use strawberries as a teeth whitener, choose a really ripe strawberry, rub it on your teeth and just like exfoliating the skin, it does remove superficial debris. The malic acid won’t actually break down the stain molecules, but the surface clean gives your teeth a whiter appearance.”

    2. Coconut oil: FACT

    This technique, also known as oil pulling, is likely to lessen the bacterial load in the mouth and has been shown to improve the health of the gums and whiten teeth, says Dr Thorne. “It’s unique because it contains predominantly medium chain fatty acids of which 45 to 50% is auric acid, which has proven anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Swishing the oil between your teeth can also dislodge and retained food particles.”

    Dr Marques recommends using the oil as a mouthwash for two to three minutes, which will lubricate the teeth and draw out impurities.

    3. Green tea: MYTH

    Green tea will actually stain your teeth, says Dr Thorne.

    “It contains plant compounds, known as tannins, which increase the staining potential. This means it is acidic and will break down the enamel on teeth. Once enamel is broken down, pigmented molecules can attach to your teeth easily, and this, of course, leads to stains.”

    4. Baking soda: FACT

    Baking soda is a natural teeth whitener, says Dr Marques. It can help to whiten teeth through its alkaline cleansing action, and is now included in many toothpastes. He suggests mixing a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda with water and applying this to your teeth with your toothbrush.

    5. Salmon: MYTH

    Salmon can’t actually whiten your teeth, although Dr Thorne recommends eating it to keep your teeth healthy. He explains:

    “Salmon is a good ‘white food’ (i.e. it can be eaten after whitening), and it also contains calcium and vitamin D, which is good for healthy teeth and bones.”

    6. Apples: FACT

    Apples, much like strawberries, contain malic acid, and along with their abrasiveness can help to whiten teeth. Dr Thorne says:

    “The mildly acidic nature and stringent quality of apples, combined with their rough, fibre-rich flesh, could help cleansing and brightening of teeth.”

    7. Lemon juice: MYTH AND FACT

    Citrus is cleansing and can help to maintain white teeth, says Dr Marques. But using lemon juice actually isn’t recommended as it’s very damaging to the tooth surface and can lead to increased sensitivity and staining as the enamel is worn away, advises Dr Thorne:

    “Lemon juice has been mixed with baking soda as a home-made whitening paste. But lemon juice is very acidic causing enamel erosion and the baking soda is very abrasive causing tooth wear.”

    8. Cheese: FACT

    Cheese can mechanically clean teeth. as it’s a natural cleanser, says Dr Marques. It has the added bonus of strengthening the tooth enamel and structure due to it being high in calcium. But opt for hard cheeses, such as cheddar, and be careful of blue and soft cheeses, which can cause breath odour, he advises.

    • Must take and pass the examination.

    Qualifications for a Electrical Contractor License

    • Holds a master electrician s license or has not less than 1 master electrician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The master electrician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of electrical wiring and equipment.
    • Out-of-state corporations will not qualify for a contractor s license unless they employ a master electrician residing in the state of Michigan.
    • Must take and pass the examination.

    Qualifications for a Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License

    • Must be at least 20 years of age.
    • Be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) as an associate engineering technician, level II, or the equivalent as determined by the board, in the field of fire alarm systems technology.

    Qualifications for a Fire Alarm Contractor License

    • Holds a fire alarm specialty technician s license or has not less than 1 fire alarm specialty technician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ.     Like health insurance, car insurance comes with both premiums and deductibles. The premiums are what you pay the insurance company every month to maintain your coverage. The deductible is what you’ll pay when you start making claims, up to a certain annual cap of, say, $1,000.

    It’s worth noting that most people who say they want cheap car insurance mean that they want car insurance with low monthly premiums. But, as with health insurance, there’s a risk to having a policy with low premiums and a high deductible. In the event of a serious accident, you’ll have to meet that deductible. So, one way to get lower premiums is to opt for a higher deductible, but this is only a safe strategy if you have enough liquidity to cover your deductible in the event of an accident.

    When car insurance companies set insurance premium rates they take several factors into account. In some states, having a used car will mean lower rates because rates are affected by your car’s replacement value.     How do IRS tax relief programs actually work?

    So how does this work exactly? You run up a huge tax debt with the IRS, wave a magic wand and then voila — you can settle your IRS debt for pennies on the dollar? Let s get real. there s no way that IRS tax relief actually works like that.

    Sure, the late-night TV commercials and tax resolution firms make it seem easy: Just hire us for $2,500 and we can settle your tax bill for pennies on the dollar! It all seems so easy and/or unbelievable. So what gives?

    The truth about getting IRS tax relief on your back taxes lies somewhere in between. Settling tax debts with the IRS isn t easy, but it isn t a scam. In this article we want to tell the story of how IRS tax debt relief programs work in real life, and one of our favorite clients, Ethel.

    We don t need easy, we just need possible

    We represented Ethel, a retired woman who was suffering from thyroid cancer. Her prognosis was good, but treatment had to be ongoing. Ethel could no longer drive to the doctor, and because there was no public transportation where she lived she had to get a taxi to go to her treatment once a week.

    As we looked at Ethel s financial situation and $49,000 tax bill, we determined that she qualified for three different types of tax relief. Option one: Because she had old debts, her tax returns were filed, and she had other credit card debt, she could file Chapter 7 bankruptcy and wipe out all of the tax debts. Ethel didn t want to file bankruptcy; she liked her credit cards and didn t want to have to rely on anyone to sign for loans in the future. Even though bankruptcy would result in a net payment to the IRS of $0, this option wasn t all that palatable to her.

    We then went over option two: The IRS has a limited amount of time to collect on an assessed tax. Typically, with some exceptions, it is ten years. Ethel s debt was 5 year old from the date of assessment. Which meant in five years, the debts would be written off. Based on Ethel s financials we believe that she could be placed in hardship status with the IRS. This means the IRS wouldn t try to collect anything from her, and she wouldn t have to pay the IRS anything (except tax refunds the IRS would intercept). Getting into hardship status was more or less a sure thing. However, Ethel didn t want this tax bill hanging over her for 5 more years.

    She wanted to know if there was a quicker way to get rid of it. And there is. Using the Offer in Compromise Doubt as to Collectability tax settlement program, we calculated that Ethel could submit $2,000 to settle a tax bill of $49,000. We submitted Ethel s Offer in Compromise package and hoped for a quick resolution.

    Unbelievably, the IRS disallowed Ethel s taxi expenses — they said it was not a reasonable or necessary expense . I explained that Ethel would die without her cancer treatment, so I disagreed. let s say somewhat passionately.

    But this is the way government works. What makes sense to you and me, doesn t make sense to a bureaucrat. Luckily, they weren t the last word.

    I filed an appeal of the Offer in Compromise rejection, and expected an easy win. But still, the IRS appeals officer was giving me a hard time about Ethel s taxi fare. WTF.

    I used some of our negotiations techniques (sorry I can t share them publicly — they re too valuable for our clients) and there was a pause by the Appeals Officer. Finally he said you bring up a good point. Your $2,000 offer is more than the IRS could expect to collect, so I am going to recommend its acceptance.

    The lesson of Ethel

    Even easy IRS tax relief may not be easy. Sometimes the most persuasive negotiation techniques in the world must be used to get the IRS to act in a way that is humane. Everything ended well for Ethel! She finished up her chemotherapy, and is cancer free. And now she is back to driving!

    1. Examine Your Exterior

    A flooded basement is sometimes the byproduct of a damaged home exterior. Check the outside of your home for signs of deterioration before entering your basement; working in a structurally unsound environment can be dangerous.

    Storms and heavy rain can exploit weak parts of your home and cause flooding. Falling trees and tree limbs can also damage your exterior and create a wet basement. Additionally, storm-related destruction can affect power and gas lines. Call a pro immediately if you notice downed power lines or smell gas near your home.

    2. Turn off Your Utilities

    Turn off your electricity and gas before you begin work on your basement. Even if you don’t have damaged utilities–or your utility company has already turned off your electricity and gas–it’s a good idea to double check. Working in a gas- and electricity-free area will prevent accidental injuries. Here’s a quick look at how to turn off your power and gas mains:

    • Electrical
      Your home’s electrical master switch is located on your breaker box. Open the breaker box door and locate the master switch. Electrical mains are usually large switches above or below your breaker panels. Flip the switch to cut power to your home. In some cases, your breakers are located in the basement. Call your utility company and have them shut off the power to your home before crossing a flooded basement to flip your power main.
    • Gas
      Your gas main is usually on the outside of your home near your meter. Your main’s on-off valve is located on the incoming pipe (coming from the ground), but some newer models have the switch on the outgoing pipe. Most utility companies prefer professionals to turn your main on or off. Unless it’s an emergency, call a pro to shut off your gas.

    3. Ventilate Your Home

    Open the windows in your basement and throughout your home to reduce odors and lower moisture levels. You can also rent fans and blowers to move air into your basement.

    4. Begin Pumping

    Flood water will affect the balance of pressure between your basement’s interior and the surrounding soil. Removing all of the water in your basement at once can overwhelm your walls and cause them to crack and even collapse. Pump the water down several feet—or inches depending on the total depth of the water—and mark the height. Wait 24 hours and check the water line. If your mark is under water, it’s too early to pump. Wait another 24 hours, pump out the same amount of water and mark the level. Repeat these steps until the water level remains stable. Pump out small increments of water in 24-hour cycles until your basement is water-free.

    5. Remove Flood Deposits

    Remove all wet or water-damaged items in your basement. Use a shovel to scoop out mud, sediment and any other accumulation. Flood debris can cause health hazards and breed mold and mildew. Lastly, hose down your basement walls and flooring with a bleach-water mixture.

    6. Change Vents and Filters

    Vents and filters are particularly vulnerable to moisture and can affect the health of your home, even after abatement.

    Replace moisture-affected filters immediately. Continuing to use water-damaged filters will reduce the efficiency of your home and potentially spread harmful mold and other contaminants. Mud and sediment can also accumulate in vents and block airflow. Remove any grates or vents and wash them in a bleach-water mixture before finalizing your cleaning.

  • Develop tight production controls to minimize the need to reject finished ads. The message is more important than the messenger. Don’t try to produce ads that win awards, produce ads that sell.
  • Who are your very best customers? Aim your ads to talk directly to people like them.
  • What will suppliers give you in the way of point-of-purchase materials. Posters, stand ups, handouts, etc. Some have excellent display racks you can use.
  • Some national chains like Coke and Pepsi provide outdoor signs for businesses. There are also indoor lighted signs you write on with special markers to advertise your special offers.
  • Can you sponsor a community event? A fun-run, golf tournament, or other event that will be well publicized in the community. Your name may not be prominently displayed but sometimes the positive exposure in the community will bring in new customers.
  • Small businesses can seldom afford saturation advertising. You must be selective in the media that reaches your customers. Pin your ad reps down and make them show you exactly how their media reaches your target audience.
  • Exploit the media you choose to the fullest. If your message is verbal, you don’t need TV. Use radio, billboards and newspapers to the fullest.
  • Consider direct mail. A letter and brochure before customer contact can increase business. An IBM study concluded that selling time can be reduced from 9.3 to 1.3 total hours with direct mail advertising. A Sales and Marketing Executives International Study showed salespeople went from eight orders per 100 cold calls to 38 orders per 100 when direct mail was used.
  • Try an editorial style ad. These are ads that look like actual stories in the newspaper. They will have advertisement at the top of the article. Develop a good headline, and 50% more people will read the article than would read an ad of the same size.
  • You can’t match larger competitors dollar-for-dollar but, you can use unusual approaches (like the Avis idea above), color, music, slogans, humor (be careful here), or media selection to win your market away from the big guys.
  • Due to the high costs of conventional advertising on, radio, TV, newspapers, many cost conscious business have been forced to look for lower cost methods. Can you advertise on parking meters, taxi boards, balloons, blimps, and grocery shopping carts. Community bulletin boards, movie ads, and weekly newspaper shoppers.
  • Key your ads. Put something in the ad that will let you know which media it came from. On coupons, put a code that will record the paper and date of the ad. In radio or TV, have them mention the ad to get the discount. Ask every customer how they found you.
  • Plan for a rainy day. During the year put a small amount aside each month for emergencies. You never know when you’ll need to react quickly to whatever the competition is doing. You must be able to capitalize on breaking national events or news regarding your industry. If negative things happen in your industry you may need to respond quickly to make sure the right message is presented.
  • Always give the customer more than you promised and more than they expected. This is tip number 27 of the 25 we advertised. Maybe this last one is the one you needed.
  • I hope these tips will help your business grow. Not all may be relevant to your particular situation. Hopefully, they will illustrate the importance to plan and control your advertising budget.

    Companies market their products in a number of ways. These ways fall into either of these two categories:

    Above the line (ATL)

    Above The Line (ATL) refers to promotional activities done at macro level. It is done at national, regional or at bigger territory level and mass audience is covered in this type of promotion. A brand image is created about the company and its product. Media such as television, cinema, radio, newspapers, and magazines are used to create an impact about the company and its product. ATL communication is more of conventional in nature.

    Below the line(BTL)

    Below The Line (BTL) communication is unconventional in nature, done at micro level and forms part of non-media communication. Measures include direct mailing, distribution of flyers, brochures, and usage of sponsorships, public relations, tele-marketing and point of sale

    Interestingly, ATL and BTL terms were coined at Proctor Gamble in 1954 where accountants differentiated advertising agencies’ payments vis-à-vis who undertook promotional activities other than advertising for fixed fees. Gradually, marketers started to differentiate activities other than advertisements as separate marketing practice called Below the line (BTL).

    Today, ATL is used for branding effect, to generate mind share while BTL is used to generate loyalty and repeat sales. ATL is tailored for mass audience while BTL promotions are targeted at individual level according to their needs and preferences. ATL promotions are difficult to measure while BTL are measurable in terms of sales and feedback and it gives marketers valuable insights on their return on investment (ROI). Since BTL focus is targeted and customer centric, it is efficient and cost effective, apt for start-ups.

    Social networking sites such as face book, twitter, my space, you tube help generate leads and enable companies to develop eCRM and use data in a varieties of ways. Though, social media is an integral part of BTL activity today, but it beats even television, audio, magazines in creating brand value in terms of numbers and is way more rewarding.

    Through The Line (TTL)

    Through the line refers to an advertising strategy involving both above and below the line communications. This strategic approach allows brands to engage with a customer at multiple points (for example, the customer will see the television commercial, hear the radio advert and be handed a flyer on the street corner). This enables an integrated communications approach where consistent messaging across multiple media create a customer perception.

    The advent of social media has blurred the ‘line’ segregating the marketing techniques. These days, companies use an integrated approach involving both ATL and BTL and it is called Through The Line (TTL) approach. This approach allows brands to engage with their customers at multiple points and thus generate a solid perception regarding the company and the product, the main aim of Marketing!

    For whom is the program intended?
    The program works well for those who would like to work in a healthcare setting, but not in direct contact with patients. The program can be a great fit for any student looking for flexibility in a profession with a strong attention to detail and organization.

    What is a Medical Coder?
    A medical coder is an individual who reads information in the patient health record, extract pertinent diagnoses and procedures, and assigns medical codes to each medical diagnosis and procedure. Once fully coded, the medical coder sends the record to the medical biller for reimbursement purposes.

    What are the admission requirements?
    Prospective students must first be admitted to IUPUI as an undergraduate student. Upon acceptance to IUPUI, students must complete prerequisite courses including anatomy, physiology and database design. Students must earn a minimum grade of a C in each class with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 in order to take the coding core classes.

    Can I complete the certificate if I live out of state?
    Out of state students may complete the online classes. For the classes that are offered on campus, academic advisors work with students to ensure equivalent courses are being taken at local universities.

    Will I need special equipment to take online classes?
    Learning and completing your coursework requires access to a desktop or laptop computer and Internet access. IUPUI provides 24 hour technical support if you need technical support while doing coursework.

    Coding Practicum Information

    What is a professional practicum?
    The practicum provides professional experience in an approved clinical site under the direction of an HIM faculty member and an onsite clinical instructor. Students also receive didactic and practicum experience in the classroom with emphasis on medical coding and reimbursement systems. Certificate students take the practicum during the last semester of the program.

    What is the required length of time I will spend at my practicum site?
    A minimum of 8 contact hours is required per semester at the site.

    Am I responsible for finding my practicum site or does the Medical Coding Certificate program staff find the site for me?
    The instructor works to find clinical sites for all students. Some students have site preferences or community contacts that they would prefer to use. Students are free to find their own site if they choose, otherwise a site will be assigned.

    What documentation is required before I go to my practicum site?
    Requirements vary by site. Some sites may require a physical exam, immunizations, and/or background checks before beginning any phase of the practicum experience. You may also be required to purchase and furnish a professional liability insurance policy.

    Am I permitted to do my practicum experience at my current place of employment?
    Yes, students may complete their practicum at their place of employment. However, the student would need to be assigned to a different work area or perform a project other than their normal duties for the practicum.

    If I am employed in healthcare as a Coder, do I still have to complete the practicum?

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Anyone driving the twists of Highway 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles recently may have glimpsed a Toyota Prius with a curious funnel-like cylinder on the roof. Harder to notice was that the person at the wheel was not actually driving.

    The car is a project of Google. which has been working in secret but in plain view on vehicles that can drive themselves, using artificial-intelligence software that can sense anything near the car and mimic the decisions made by a human driver.

    With someone behind the wheel to take control if something goes awry and a technician in the passenger seat to monitor the navigation system, seven test cars have driven 1,000 miles without human intervention and more than 140,000 miles with only occasional human control. One even drove itself down Lombard Street in San Francisco, one of the steepest and curviest streets in the nation. The only accident, engineers said, was when one Google car was rear-ended while stopped at a traffic light.

    Autonomous cars are years from mass production, but technologists who have long dreamed of them believe that they can transform society as profoundly as the Internet has.

    Robot drivers react faster than humans, have 360-degree perception and do not get distracted, sleepy or intoxicated, the engineers argue. They speak in terms of lives saved and injuries avoided — more than 37,000 people died in car accidents in the United States in 2008. The engineers say the technology could double the capacity of roads by allowing cars to drive more safely while closer together. Because the robot cars would eventually be less likely to crash, they could be built lighter, reducing fuel consumption. But of course, to be truly safer, the cars must be far more reliable than, say, today’s personal computers, which crash on occasion and are frequently infected.

    The Google research program using artificial intelligence to revolutionize the automobile is proof that the company’s ambitions reach beyond the search engine business. The program is also a departure from the mainstream of innovation in Silicon Valley, which has veered toward social networks and Hollywood-style digital media.

    During a half-hour drive beginning on Google’s campus 35 miles south of San Francisco last Wednesday, a Prius equipped with a variety of sensors and following a route programmed into the GPS navigation system nimbly accelerated in the entrance lane and merged into fast-moving traffic on Highway 101, the freeway through Silicon Valley.

    It drove at the speed limit, which it knew because the limit for every road is included in its database, and left the freeway several exits later. The device atop the car produced a detailed map of the environment.

    The car then drove in city traffic through Mountain View, stopping for lights and stop signs, as well as making announcements like “approaching a crosswalk” (to warn the human at the wheel) or “turn ahead” in a pleasant female voice. This same pleasant voice would, engineers said, alert the driver if a master control system detected anything amiss with the various sensors.

    The car can be programmed for different driving personalities — from cautious, in which it is more likely to yield to another car, to aggressive, where it is more likely to go first.

    Christopher Urmson, a Carnegie Mellon University robotics scientist, was behind the wheel but not using it. To gain control of the car he has to do one of three things: hit a red button near his right hand, touch the brake or turn the steering wheel. He did so twice, once when a bicyclist ran a red light and again when a car in front stopped and began to back into a parking space. But the car seemed likely to have prevented an accident itself.

    When he returned to automated “cruise” mode, the car gave a little “whir” meant to evoke going into warp drive on “Star Trek,” and Dr. Urmson was able to rest his hands by his sides or gesticulate when talking to a passenger in the back seat. He said the cars did attract attention, but people seem to think they are just the next generation of the Street View cars that Google uses to take photographs and collect data for its maps.

    The project is the brainchild of Sebastian Thrun, the 43-year-old director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a Google engineer and the co-inventor of the Street View mapping service.

    In 2005, he led a team of Stanford students and faculty members in designing the Stanley robot car, winning the second Grand Challenge of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a $2 million Pentagon prize for driving autonomously over 132 miles in the desert.

    Besides the team of 15 engineers working on the current project, Google hired more than a dozen people, each with a spotless driving record, to sit in the driver’s seat, paying $15 an hour or more. Google is using six Priuses and an Audi TT in the project.

    The Google researchers said the company did not yet have a clear plan to create a business from the experiments. Dr. Thrun is known as a passionate promoter of the potential to use robotic vehicles to make highways safer and lower the nation’s energy costs. It is a commitment shared by Larry Page, Google’s co-founder, according to several people familiar with the project.

    The self-driving car initiative is an example of Google’s willingness to gamble on technology that may not pay off for years, Dr. Thrun said. Even the most optimistic predictions put the deployment of the technology more than eight years away.

    One way Google might be able to profit is to provide information and navigation services for makers of autonomous vehicles. Or, it might sell or give away the navigation technology itself, much as it offers its Android smart phone system to cellphone companies.

    But the advent of autonomous vehicles poses thorny legal issues, the Google researchers acknowledged. Under current law, a human must be in control of a car at all times, but what does that mean if the human is not really paying attention as the car crosses through, say, a school zone, figuring that the robot is driving more safely than he would?

    And in the event of an accident, who would be liable — the person behind the wheel or the maker of the software?

    “The technology is ahead of the law in many areas,” said Bernard Lu, senior staff counsel for the California Department of Motor Vehicles. “If you look at the vehicle code, there are dozens of laws pertaining to the driver of a vehicle, and they all presume to have a human being operating the vehicle.”

    The Google researchers said they had carefully examined California’s motor vehicle regulations and determined that because a human driver can override any error, the experimental cars are legal. Mr. Lu agreed.

    Scientists and engineers have been designing autonomous vehicles since the mid-1960s, but crucial innovation happened in 2004 when the Pentagon’s research arm began its Grand Challenge.

    The first contest ended in failure, but in 2005, Dr. Thrun’s Stanford team built the car that won a race with a rival vehicle built by a team from Carnegie Mellon University. Less than two years later, another event proved that autonomous vehicles could drive safely in urban settings.

    Advances have been so encouraging that Dr. Thrun sounds like an evangelist when he speaks of robot cars. There is their potential to reduce fuel consumption by eliminating heavy-footed stop-and-go drivers and, given the reduced possibility of accidents, to ultimately build more lightweight vehicles.

    There is even the farther-off prospect of cars that do not need anyone behind the wheel. That would allow the cars to be summoned electronically, so that people could share them. Fewer cars would then be needed, reducing the need for parking spaces, which consume valuable land.

    And, of course, the cars could save humans from themselves. “Can we text twice as much while driving, without the guilt?” Dr. Thrun said in a recent talk. “Yes, we can, if only cars will drive themselves.”

    How Dying Works

    As technology helps us to live longer, it will also shape how we die. With a higher-brain definition of death, you’re gone when your personality is. With a whole-brain definition of death, you’ve lost the ability to breathe on your own again. Each breath provides the oxygen necessary for survival to the rest of the body. Very simply, dying starts to happen when your body doesn’t get the oxygen it needs to survive.

    Different cells die at different speeds, so the length of the dying process depends on which cells are deprived of oxygen. The brain requires a tremendous amount of oxygen but keeps very little in reserve, so any cutoff of oxygen to the brain will result in cell death within three to seven minutes; that’s why a stroke can kill so quickly. When blood is cut off from the heart. a heart attack occurs and can also take a life fairly swiftly. But since our bodies aren’t designed to last forever, sometimes the body’s systems just simply wear out. When someone dies of extremely old age, and the family is gathered around the deathbed, you’re basically observing the breakdown of these systems.

    There are some outward signs that these systems are slowing down. The person will begin sleeping more to conserve the little energy that’s left. When that energy is gone, the individual may lose the desire to eat and then to drink. Swallowing becomes difficult and the mouth gets very dry, so forcing the person to eat or drink could cause choking. The dying person loses bladder and bowel control, but accidents will occur less frequently as those gastrointestinal functions shut down as well and he or she consumes less.

    Any ­pain that the dying person feels at this point can usually be managed by a doctor in some way, but it can be unbelievably difficult to watch these final steps of a person’s life. The stage right before a person dies is called the agonal phase. The dying person is often disoriented, and it will seem like he or she can’t get comfortable. It will also seem, disconcertingly, that the person can’t catch a breath. There may be agonizing pauses between loud, labored breaths. If there is fluid built up in the lungs. then that congestion will cause a sound known as the death rattle. As the cells inside a person lose their connections, the person may start convulsing or having muscle spasms.

    We can’t know exactly how the person is feeling at this point, though those who have had near-death experiences (NDE) seem to agree that the process isn’t painful.     The point of no return is biological death, which begins about four to six minutes after clinical death. After the heartbeat stops, it only takes that long for brain cells to begin dying from lack of oxygen. Resuscitation is impossible at this point.

The Center to Advance Palliative Care notes that social workers with a bachelor’s degree can apply to be Certified Hospice and Palliative Social Workers, while those with a master’s can apply to be Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Social Workers.

    The General Council of the Assemblies of God’s Chaplaincy Department notes that there aren’t any universal qualifications for hospice chaplains it approves, but that chaplains must meet individual employers’ requirements. It says that desired prerequisites may include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, a credential from the Assemblies of God, ministry experience and completion of a Clinical Pastoral Education course. Chaplains can also obtain certification through the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. upon meeting certain requirements, such as a minimum of three years of experience working in hospice and palliative care.

    Instead, you’d rather spend your remaining time with family and friends. Maybe you yearn to reflect on your life and create a legacy for your loved ones, such as a journal or a videotaped message. Perhaps you need to put your financial affairs in order, or seek spiritual guidance as death nears.

    Despite your illness, the quality of each day still matters to you. You want relief from pain, from shortness of breath, and from other symptoms so that you can focus on the matters dearest to you, including saying good-bye to your loved ones.

    That’s when hospice. or end-of-life care, may help.

    Hospice is a type of palliative care. but differs in important ways. Palliative care serves anyone who is seriously ill, not just those who are dying. Palliative care itself doesn’t seek to cure, but provides pain relief and symptom management, and addresses the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families. Many patients receive palliative care while they’re still pursuing a cure.

    Hospice also provides wide-ranging care and support to patients and families.     You’re eligible to enter hospice care if your doctor states that you have a terminal illness and that death can be expected in six months or less if your illness follows its normal course. However, you may stay in hospice beyond six months if your doctor and the hospice team certify that you still have only a short time to live.

    Bear in mind that hospice isn’t always a permanent choice. For example, some elderly patients with failing kidneys choose hospice rather than undergo dialysis.
