5e soirée des partenaires

Sur le thème de la fabrication additive (3D)

Jeudi 29 juin a eu lieu la cinquième Soirée des partenaires de l’école, organisée par le service des Relations industrielles. L’événement a rassemblé environ quatre-vingt personnes, industriels, représentants du secteur économique régional, universitaires et étudiants.

Une table-ronde, animée par Fabien SOULIÉ, enseignant-chercheur, a abordé le thème de « La fabrication additive dans les applications industrielles, citoyennes, de la recherche et de la formation ».

Stéphane ABED, président de la société Poly shape, Yann LEFEBVRE, président du FabLab « LabSud », André CHRYSOCHOOS, directeur du centre PRO3D et Christian JORGENSEN, professeur au CHU de Montpellier et directeur de l’unité INSERM “Cellules souches, plasticité cellulaire, médecine régénératrice et immunothérapies”, sont intervenus pour partager leurs expériences et échanger sur les applications de ces technologies.

Les diverses interventions des invités ont permis de montrer le spectre très large des champs d’applications de ces nouvelles techniques de mise en œuvre de la matière, allant de l’industrie de pointe à la recherche médicale avancée, sans oublier les applications standardsaccessibles à tous ” précise Fabien Soulié.

Les présentations ont aussi su faire ressortir toutes les étapes de la démarche de conception, de dimensionnement et d’optimisation, préalables à la phase d’impressionproprement dite ” ajoute André Chrysochoos, concluant que “la fabrication additive est apparue aux participants comme une solution complémentaire aux techniques classiques de fabrication, mais possédant ses propres limites “.

James Watt was born in 1736 and died in 1819. James Watt’s great claim to fame is that he greatly improved on the steam engine thus paving the way for their use in factories, mills, mines etc.

The invention of the steam engine is credited to Thomas Savery and Thomas Newcomen. Their steam engines were used at their time to pump out water from coal mines. However, their machines were slow and less than reliable.

Watt was born in Greenock, Scotland and he started his professional life as a mathematical-instrumental maker. He became interested in steam engines and determined that he could improve on Newcomen’s. By 1769, he had built an improved version of the steam engine using a separate condensing chamber which allowed the machine to continue working all the time – something that Newcomen’s engine could not do. Watt also insulated his cylinder to maintain the high temperatures that were needed for maximum efficiency.

Watt could not have succeeded at this stage of his new career without money. This he got from John Roebuck – also a British inventor. In 1775, Roebuck was replaced by Matthew Boulton who owned the Soho Engineering Works in Birmingham. It was at this time that Watt started to manufacture steam engines for sale. Between 1775 and 1800, Watt was involved in further research on steam engines and he continued making important changes to his machines. He produced a steam pressure gauge to record pressure in a cylinder and a rotary engine which could drive various forms of machinery.

In 1800, Watt retired from work to devote his life to research. Though he did not invent the steam engine, he fundamentally changed what Newcomen and Savery had invented and the impact of his new versions of the steam engine on the Industrial Revolution cannot be understated. In recognition of the importance of his work, the electrical unit, the watt, was named after him and in his honour.

Industrial and Organizational Psychology

Overview

Industrial and organizational psychologists (called I-O psychologists) are behavioral scientists who specialize in human behavior in the work place. I-O scientists conduct research to derive principles of individual, group, and organizational behavior, train future psychologists, and work on staff at–or as consultants to–business, industry, labor, public, academic, community, and health organizations.

I-O psychologists can work in a variety of areas such as hiring and placement, training and development, organizational development and change, performance measurement and evaluation, consumer psychology and marketing, and engineering psychology. They create and utilize diagnostic tools to improve employees’ satisfaction with their work and employers’ ability to increase productivity. Most graduate programs follow what’s called the “scientist-practitioner model,” whereby students are trained in research as a solid basis for practice in the field. Therefore, most require internships or fieldwork as part of their programs.

Degree Information

Degrees in industrial-organizational psychology can be sought and conferred through a variety of departments, including psychology, business, management, and human resources. Common master’s degrees are M.A. or M.S. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Human Resources or HR Management, Organizational Behavior, and Organizational Management. It’s also possible to get a Master’s in Organizational Development (M.O.D.) and get joint M.A./M.B.A. or M.A./J.D. degrees. Some master’s programs are combined with a bachelor’s into a five-year program. Most take one and a half years (including summer) to three years and require field work and a thesis. Ph.D. programs are typically four to five years.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing a Degree Program

  • Do you want to be a scientist? a practitioner? Do you want to incorporate both (say, by consulting)? With this in mind, what do graduates of a given program tend to do?
  • Does the program provide equal weight to the “I” and the “O” or lean towards one?
  • What are the internship or externship requirements? Does the program help you find such opportunities?
  • How accessible are the professors?
  • Does this program include a business school? If so, how much collaboration exists between the business school and the I-O program?

Career Overview

Industrial-organizational psychologists can work in a range of positions at a range of places. Graduates of programs can pursue careers as management consultants, organizational development specialists, human resources generalists, executive recruiters, research analysts, and employee-assistance program administrators at business, industry, labor, public, academic, community, and health organizations.

Career/Licensing Requirements

Only those who’ve earned a Ph.D. are eligible to apply for licensure to receive the title of “psychologist.” Such licensure is conducted on a state-by-state basis and, in most cases, requires sufficient scores on both written and oral exams and a certain number of work hours supervised by a licensed psychologist. Young professionals in the field should consider which state they want to work in and keep up with ever-changing regulations about consulting and practicing across state lines.

Salary Information

In a 2000 survey conducted by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the average salary for those with a doctorate degree was $90,000 and $67,000 for those with a master’s degree. Respondents under 35 years old average $70,000. Ph.D. starting salaries are over $60,000.

Description of Technique

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a form of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) where a small probe is scanned across the sample to obtain information about the sample’s surface. The information gathered from the probe’s interaction with the surface can be as simple as physical topography or as diverse as measurements of the material’s physical, magnetic, or chemical properties. These data are collected as the probe is scanned in a raster pattern across the sample to form a map of the measured property relative to the X-Y position. Thus, the AFM microscopic image shows the variation in the measured property, e.g. height or magnetic domains, over the area imaged.

The AFM probe has a very sharp tip, often less than 100 Å diameter, at the end of a small cantilever beam. The probe is attached to a piezoelectric scanner tube, which scans the probe across a selected area of the sample surface. Interatomic forces between the probe tip and the sample surface cause the cantilever to deflect as the sample’s surface topography (or other properties) changes. A laser light reflected from the back of the cantilever measures the deflection of the cantilever. This information is fed back to a computer, which generates a map of topography and/or other properties of interest. Areas as large as about 100 µm square to less than 100 nm square can be imaged.

Analytical Information

Contact Mode AFM – The AFM probe is scanned at a constant force between the probe and the sample surface to obtain a 3D topographical map. When the probe cantilever is deflected by topographical changes, the scanner adjusts the probe position to restore the original cantilever deflection. The scanner position information is used to create a topographical image. Lateral resolution of

Intermittent Contact (Tapping Mode) AFM – In this mode, the probe cantilever is oscillated at or near its resonant frequency. The oscillating probe tip is then scanned at a height where it barely touches or “taps” the sample surface. The system monitors the probe position and vibrational amplitude to obtain topographical and other property information. Accurate topographical information can be obtained even for very fragile surfaces. Optimum resolution is about 50 Å lateral and

Lateral Force Microscopy – This mode measures the lateral deflection of the probe cantilever as the tip is scanned across the sample in contact mode. Changes in lateral deflection represent relative frictional forces between the probe tip and the sample surface.

Phase Detection Microscopy – With the system operating in Tapping mode, the cantilever oscillation is damped by interaction with the sample surface. The phase lag between the drive signal and actual cantilever oscillation is monitored. Changes in the phase lag indicate variations in the surface properties, such as viscoelasticity or mechanical properties. A phase image, typically collected simultaneously with a topographical image, maps the local changes in material’s physical or mechanical properties.

Magnetic Force Microscopy – This mode images local variations in the magnetic forces at the sample’s surface. The probe tip is coated with a thin film of ferromagnetic material that will react to the magnetic domains on the sample surface. The magnetic forces between the tip and the sample are measured by monitoring cantilever deflection while the probe is scanned at a constant height above the surface. A map of the forces shows the sample’s natural or applied magnetic domain structure.


Image Analysis – Since the images are collected in digital format, a wide variety of image manipulations are available for AFM data. Quantitative topographical information, such as lateral spacing, step height, and surface roughness are readily obtained. Images can be presented as two-dimensional or three-dimensional representations in hard copy or as digital image files for electronic transfer and publication.

Nanoindentation – A specialized probe tip is forced into the sample surface to obtain a measure of the material’s mechanical properties in regions as small as a few nanometers. (See the Handbook section on Nanoindentation Hardness Testing .)

Sample Requirements

No sample preparation is typically required. Samples can be imaged in air or liquid. Sample height is limited to about 1.5 inches. Areas up to 8 inches in diameter can be fully traversed without repositioning. Larger samples can be fixtured for imaging within a limited area. Total surface roughness in the image area should not exceed about 6 µm.
