What you should know about Granville Island
Hotels on Granville Island
The only hotel on Granville Island is a suitably striking establishment, one that’s simultaneously imaginatively styled, wonderfully located, and rather aptly named—what else could it be except the Granville Island Hotel? Found right on the tip of the island, this waterfront boutique hotel fits the locale beautifully, with its own marina and a restaurant serving locally caught seafood. Guests rave about its spa tubs, business center, and the free water-berth (available for those arriving by yacht).
Things to see in Granville Island
Pulling off the trick of being in the center of Downtown, while at the same time being firmly tucked away from it all, Granville Island still manages to draw in the crowds. The center point of its hubbub is the Public Market, housed in a one-time corrugated tin factory. This is where Vancouver’s largest farmers’ market is held, its stalls laden with local produce, freshly-caught fish, and just-baked foods. You’ll also find artisan goods, jewelry, and artwork for sale. Drink is another big draw here—specifically beer, as the Island is home to the craft brewery of Granville Island Brewing. It organizes daily tours during which you can sample the delights of its German-style brews. The other big attraction on Granville Island is its thriving performing arts scene. There are many theater production companies here, but the biggest is the 450-seat Arts Club Theatre Company. Here you’ll get a chance to catch recent comedies, classic musicals, and bold contemporary dramas.
Good for foodies and lovers of theater
With its welter opportunities for sampling the pleasures of local foods and drink, it’s no wonder that they call this place a foodies’ paradise. In fact its gastronomic scene is only matched by the vibrancy of its theater companies. Not only can you catch a dazzling variety of shows at its half a dozen venues, Granville Island’s open spaces are home to street performers and improvised performances. And of course, the spectacle and fun of Downtown Vancouver is literally around the corner. Stay at the luxury hotel on Granville Island and all this will literally all be at your doorstep.
How to get to Granville Island
If you’re coming from the northwest U.S., you can easily drive to Granville Island. Seattle is only 3 hours away by car (there’s car parking at the 3-star Granville Island hotel). Vancouver International Airport, 7 miles to the south, is the main point of entry for those flying in. If you hire a car there, it’ll take 25 minutes to get to Granville Island, heading along BC-99 until the exit at Anderson Street. Alternatively you can catch the 980 Skytrain service, changing at Broadway-City Hall Station for the 015 bus service. It will take around 45 minutes to travel to Granville Island this way, including a short walk at the end.
