Master of Education in Educational Leadership

Education Leaders Drive School Success

Quality educational leadership is vital to the overall success of an individual school or school system. Strong academic leaders are key to high-performing schools; they help orchestrate school reform, and serve as motivators to fellow teachers and students.

To help you prepare for your new role as an education leader, Penn State World Campus has partnered with the College of Education to offer you a completely online Master of Education in Educational Leadership, with your choice of three emphasis areas:

Teacher Leader: Our program allows you to continue teaching in the classroom while you pursue additional roles, such as a lead teacher, mentor teacher, or department head. In your course work you will explore topics that include learning theory, teacher leadership, teacher inquiry, and curriculum design.

School Leader: Approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the School Leader emphasis meets Pennsylvania State educational requirements for certification as a school principal. This option offers an internship allowing you the opportunity to integrate the specialized knowledge learned through coursework into the field under the supervision of an approved on-site mentor principal. The internship must span a full calendar year. At this time, only Pennsylvania-certified educators are eligible to apply for the Graduate Certificate for Principalship and/or the School Leader emphasis of Masters in Educational Leadership. Our Masters in Educational Leadership with the Teacher Leader emphasis is open to educators from other states and countries. Please note that switching from one emphasis area to another is not permissible once the student has been accepted into a specific program emphasis.

School Leader (without Principal Certification): Same program (courses) as above without principal certification. The internship (which is the capstone assignment for the degree) is modified accordingly. This emphasis area is best aligned to students in international and private schools, domestic and abroad.

This course looks at various management philosophies and their practical applications. Topics include an examination of management and leadership philosophies and styles, and a comparison and contrast of the differences between management, leadership, and mentorship.

Emerging Theories of Leadership

This course examines current theories regarding leadership. Topics include an examination of ethical leadership and the various theories of leadership and leadership development.

Envisioning the New Health Human Service Organizations

Students will apply advanced understanding of strategic management concepts to analyze and assess complex organization problems, envision new paradigms and innovative solutions, and create organizational change. This course investigates the complex ethical, legal, political, economic, regulatory, social, technological, and international issues facing health and human services leaders.

Hands-on Experience

Students must have access to an organizational environment that will be available for use in research and reference for course work.

Students also engage in two brief residencies (roughly three and one-half days each) at our Chicago campus, which provides an opportunity for face-to-face interaction and networking with fellow students from around the globe. At the first residency, which occurs during Year 1 of the program, students engage in focused seminars aimed at helping them formulate dissertation topics and prepare for the research process. At the second residency, in Year 2, students complete their competency exam. A third residency is optional.


Completion of the dissertation is an essential aspect of a student’s academic experience and professional education. It provides the school the opportunity to evaluate the student’s ability to apply Organizational Leadership theory and research and to think critically and creatively about an issue in the field.

The dissertation should clearly and concisely demonstrate the student’s command of the research in a specific area of organizational leadership. In the dissertation, the student will critically evaluate and synthesize relevant research and theory in the topic chosen for study. The student’s dissertation Committee is responsible for determining the appropriateness and acceptability of the dissertation proposal, and for final approval of the dissertation.

Application to The Chicago School’s Organizational Leadership doctoral program is open to any person who has earned a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in psychology, the behavioral sciences, organizational discipline or other related field, and who meets other entrance requirements. The most decorated Olympian in history, Michael Phelps is by any measure a great success. A legend, even. But he has not always been happy.

Phelps’ first trip to the Olympics was in Sydney, when he was just 15 years old. He didn’t win any medals, but it was clear from his first appearance that the tall, skinny kid with long limbs had tremendous potential in the pool.

In Athens in 2004, Phelps took home six gold medals and two bronze. In Beijing in 2008, Phelps won gold eight times. And in London in 2012, Phelps won four gold and two silver medals.

But Phelps’ rise to the top of his sport was not without stumbles. Phelps was arrested for a DUI when he was only 19, and in 2009, Phelps was criticized after a photo came out of him smoking a bong.

In 2014, Phelps was again arrested for drunk driving. The champion of three Olympic games who had accumulated 22 medals fell into a deep depression.

At times, he even felt suicidal.

“I’ve seen the darkest of the dark. And there are days where I didn’t want to be here,” Phelps, now 31, tells CNBC.

These days, though Phelps is better, he still struggles, and he’s frank about that.

“I’m not perfect. Nobody is. I will be the first one to admit a mistake when it’s made. That’s the only way you are able to move on and learn from that mistake,” says the swimmer. “By no means has my life been absolutely perfect.”

Phelps has turned a corner, though. He feels more stable now than he was a couple of years ago. Nine out of 10 mornings, he says he wakes up happy. Before his time in the treatment center, Phelps says there were periods of his life where he would wake up in a bad mood six out of 10 days.

“Being able to come out of the other side and just to work and learn things about me that I never knew, I didn’t want to know at that point — you know, I think it changed my life,” he says.

In Rio last year, Phelps added six medals to his stack, bringing his tally of Olympic medals to 28, and making him the most decorated Olympian in history. Phelps is a husband and new father, and he is launching his business career, which he aims to model after Michael Jordan’s.

For example, Phelps spoke to CNBC from the New York City showroom of direct-to-consumer mattress brand Leesa. with which he has recently entered into a four-year brand partnership.

Albright’s ADP curriculum features an accelerated seminar format with intense use of the Internet as well as additional computer technology. Interaction between students is emphasized and much of this collaboration involves applied group activities.

While traditional classes meet 40-44 hours per semester, Albright’s ADP courses meet for four hours per evening for five to seven weeks. Remaining class time is fulfilled by a combination of Internet usage and independent study.

Through a special partnership with Reading Area Community College, Delaware County Community College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Montgomery County Community College, Northampton Community College, and Warren County Community College, most associate degrees (A.A. or A.S.) from these colleges transfer fully to Albright ADP (and acceptance is automatic if all Albright transfer admissions criteria are met.) Albright College offers a $2,500-3,200 Partner Scholarship based on GPA to graduates of these colleges. (Any applicant with an Associates Degree is eligible for a $2,500 scholarship.)

Rather, students are educated in the academic study of crime, criminology and justice in preparation for a variety of positions within the criminal justice system.

Digital Communications: Albright College offers one of the only evening accelerated-hybrid programs in Digital Communications in the area. Focus on strategic communication across media platforms including publications, videos, and websites in the Albright College Digital Communications program. Computer and Information Systems: The accelerated program in information systems is based on common structures and degree programs in the United States and Canada. Doctoral Programs

Welcome to Concordia University Chicago and thank you for your interest in applying to one of our doctoral programs. All documents relating to admission should be submitted to Concordia University’s Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services prior to the deadline for your anticipated term of enrollment. Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
  • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
  • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
  • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
  • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
  • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

Additional Testing

Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

Pending Status

Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. Show Ambassador Program

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) seeks students (and recent graduates) with outstanding customer service skills to be interns at IAAPA Attractions Expo and Asian Attractions Expo. Successful applicants will get the opportunity to see and be involved in the premier amusement and attractions trade show and conference in the U.S. and/or Asia.

The elements of the program include:

  • Event Management: Working with the association s expo management team and on-site vendors to oversee a range of special events at IAAPA Attractions Expo.
  • Education Program: Working with IAAPA s education staff to conduct the on-site logistics for the education workshop program, Institute program, and off-site tour programs.
  • Trade Show Support: Working with the expo management team, floor managers, and vendors in support of trade show logistics.
  • Behind the Scenes Education: Providing a behind the scenes look at IAAPA s tradeshow vendors. In addition, each ambassador is scheduled a specific list of seminars to attend.
  • Social Program: Ability to network with other peers in the industry as well as to make contact with facility operators in the amusement and attractions industry and interact with one of the premier trade show management teams in the industry.

An intern program by its nature is a balance between the work needs of the employer and the education needs of the students the IAAPA Ambassador Program will balance these needs by providing specific education opportunities throughout the week that will be pre-scheduled as a part of the program. Part of that balance is what IAAPA provides and what we expect each Ambassador to bring to the expo.

    The program prepares teachers for a variety of leadership positions, including principals, associate/assistant principals, athletic directors, deans of students, curriculum coordinators or Area Education Agency consultants. Drake’s reputation for quality extends across the state of Iowa, where nearly 70 percent of school districts have at least one administrator who holds a Drake degree.

    The part-time program is designed with the needs of working professionals in mind. In a convenient weekend format, students learn from faculty members who have extensive experience as administrators.

    The Irish Hospice Foundation initiated the Hospice Friendly HospitalsProgramme in partnership with the HSE in May 2006. The programme isfocused on putting hospice principles into hospital practice.

    This pioneering initiative is a first within Irish and Europeanhealthcare. We were presented with the challenge of defining job roleswhich had not previously existed in the hospital system and toidentify, find and recruit only the best people into these roles; allwithin a very short timeframe. We needed a reputable organisation toget involved right from the start; one which could deliver at everystage of the process until we had recruited all the programme team.

    We selected the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland s Institute ofLeadership and Healthcare Management (ILHM) because of their uniquestanding within the Irish Health services and because the ILHM couldoffered a wide-ranging skillset comprising competency framework design,recruitment and selection, interview skills, psychometrics andpsychological consultancy and evidence-based reporting.

    We were encouraged that they listened carefully to our needs, and thendesigned and consistently delivered to a high standard throughout theprocess. Their mode of engagement was important to us; their remitcovered every area from application form design and handling, throughto running a full assessment centre, participation and advice ininterviews, and delivering feedback to our new recruits.

    The ILHM Consultants on this project, apart from being an interestinggroup of people, displayed a high work-ethic and were very focused intheir approach. The involvement of the ILHM promoted confidence in theprogramme among the senior staff in the hospitals that we were engagingwith. I would have no hesitation in recommending that organisationsgive serious consideration to the ILHM if they are engaging in anycompetencybased recruitment process.
