Basic Math Teaching Strategies

The building blocks of mathematics start early on, when learning the basic skills. The key to teaching basic math skills that students can apply and remember for future instruction is to use several teaching strategies.

Repetition

A simple strategy teachers can use to improve math skills is repetition. By repeating and reviewing previous formulas, lessons and information, students are better able to comprehend concepts at a faster rate.

According to Professor W. Stephen Wilson from Johns Hopkins University, the core concepts of basic math must be mastered before students are able to move into a more advanced study. Repetition is a simple tool that makes it easier for students to master the concepts without wasting time. According to the University of Minnesota, daily re-looping or reviews will bring the previous lesson back into the spotlight and allow teachers to build on those previous skills.

Timed testing

When teachers are moving beyond the simple concepts of numbers into addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, it is important to incorporate timed tests that review the previous class or several classes.

Taking a short test and then grading the test in class will help teachers assess student understanding. When the test shows that students are answering more questions correctly within the time period, teachers are able to determine that students have mastered the basic skills.

Pair work

Mathematics is not limited to learning from a textbook, lessons, or testing strategy. Students have different learning styles and need to have lessons that help improve all styles of learning to get the best results.

Group work is a simple strategy that allows students to work and problem solve with a buddy. When a teacher has provided the basic instruction, it’s helpful to split the class into pairs or groups to work on problems.

Since the pairs are working as a team, the students can discuss the problems and work together to solve the issues. The goal of pair work is to teach students critical thinking skills that are necessary for future math problems and real life.

Manipulation tools

The use of blocks, fruits, balls or other manipulation tools help students learn the basics of place value, addition, subtraction and other areas of basic math. According to Kate Nonesuch on the National Adult Learning Database of Canada, manipulation tools help slow down the process of problem solving so that students are able to fully understand the information.

Manipulation tools make it easier for students to learn and understand basic skills. These are ideal when students learn best through hands-on experience and building rather than traditional lessons and repetition.

Math games

Reinforcing the information learned in class is not always the easiest task for teachers, but math games provide the opportunity to make the lesson interesting and encourage students to remember the concepts.

Depending on the class size, computer availability, and the lesson being taught, games can vary. Teachers can use computer games for the particular skills or can opt to use class games to make the lesson more fun. Teachers should be sure to incorporate a strategy into games to help students learn the material.

Math skills are an important part of life. To offer students the most help, teachers need to incorporate several strategies to give students the opportunity for future growth.

Nursing Administration (onsite online)

Special Admission Statement 2-9-16

The nursing profession is constantly evolving to meet the needs of health care systems and patients. The most recent major innovation is the introduction of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) degrees. Based on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, the Joint Commission, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing (as well as other educational institutions) began transitioning advanced practice nursing programs to the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree level and created the CNL area of concentration in our MSN program.

In line with this effort, Pitt Nursing is no longer accepting applications for admissions to the MSN in Nursing Administration area of concentration, as of February 2016. The profession still needs nurse leaders with training and advanced knowledge in management, quality, safety, and expertise at the point of care. Thus, prospective students are encouraged to consider applying to our master’s degree program in the CNL area of concentration. which prepares you to be an effective leader of efforts to coordinate care across the continuum of health care service, improve patient safety, deliver effective and efficient care in a fiscally responsible manner, and to test and implement evidence-based practice innovations. The CNL program, ranked third in U.S. New World Report’s 2016 Best Graduate Schools, is offered both on-campus and online through Pitt Online.

As humanity evolves, many people are leaving the confines of old religious and social notions and seeking new paradigms that focus on the value and worth of the individual. This is why IMHS teaches a human-centered spiritual philosophy which does not surrender one’s power to anyone or anything else. It empowers, encourages, and builds people up. It refreshes the mind, spirit, and soul!

Genuine, Bona-Fide, and Legal Degrees: [ Read More ]

Our degrees are absolutely genuine, legal, and “real.” IMHS is not a diploma mill. Our degrees are non-secular (religiously-based) in nature and require effort on the student’s part. Non-secular degrees are neither better nor worse than traditional degrees; they are simply used for different purposes. Therefore, students can rest assured that the degree they earn is completely legal and “real,” and the title of “Doctor” can be used in front of their names. This applies to nearly every country in the free world–especially countries that protect religious freedom.

Metaphysics for the 21st Century: [ Read More ]

With the many demands of life in this day and age, most adults simply do not have the time to spend several years getting a degree. Nevertheless, many busy adults would like a degree to enhance their lives and careers. Therefore, we have simplified and streamlined our Metaphysics PhD program by offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in an accelerated format that takes less time to complete thus allowing students to begin using their degrees sooner. And the best part is that our degree program provides an excellent learning platform that is concentrated, comprehensive, and affordable. We think you’ll find this 21st Century approach to getting your Metaphysics PhD degree a refreshing change from the past century!

Lesson 1: Introduction to MS Excel 2016

Excel can be used for a wide variety of purposes such as creating an address book, grocery lists, tracking expenses, creating invoices and bills, accounting, balance checkbooks and other financial accounts, as well as any other purpose that requires a spreadsheet or table.

  • Lesson 2: Navigating Excel 2016

In this lesson, we’re going to focus on the major elements of Excel 2016 and take a few minutes to become familiar with their purpose.

  • Lesson 3: Worksheets and Workbooks

Worksheets are stored in workbooks, and workbooks are the files that you actually save.

  • Lesson 4: Entering Information into MS Excel 2016

Starting to enter information is as simple as clicking on a cell in the spreadsheet and typing, but there are some things that are helpful to know – and that you can do – before you ever type that first letter or number.

  • Lesson 5: Introduction to Working with Cells, Rows, and Columns

If you want to move data from its original location and relocate it somewhere else, you must cut the data, then paste it somewhere else. You can cut or copy cells, rows, columns, or entire worksheets.

  • Lesson 6: Formatting Data and Cells

Taking the time to format a worksheet can take it from the black and white page of data and gridlines to something that looks professional and attractive.

  • Lesson 7: Formatting Rows and Columns

In Excel 2016, the width of a column is determined by how many characters that can be displayed within a cell.

  • Lesson 8: Editing Cells, Rows, Columns, and Worksheets

Excel 2016 makes creating – and editing – spreadsheets a lot easier because correcting errors is easy mess free.

  • Lesson 9: Introduction to Formulas and Calculations

If you use spreadsheets to do accounting for a business, track totals, invoice customers, or anything that requires mathematics, Excel’s ability to calculate formulas is going to save you errors and headaches.

  • Lesson 10: Working with Formulas and Functions

In Excel, a function is a predesigned formula that does a certain calculation. This can make it easier because you don’t have to construct every formula yourself.

  • Lesson 11: Maintaining Worksheets

It’s important to learn how to maintain your worksheets to help you keep on top of all the information.

  • Lesson 12: The What-If Analysis

A what-if analysis lets you explore possibilities by entering possible values into the same equation so you can see the possible outcomes in the cells of your spreadsheet.

  • Lesson 13: Adding Images and Graphics

You’ve already learned how to format a worksheet and enter information into Excel. Now we’re going to show you how to add elements such as graphics and images.

  • Lesson 14: Charts and Diagrams

Charts and diagrams are tools you can use to visually represent the data in a worksheet.

  • Lesson 15: Creating Data Lists

A data list or a database table are types of worksheets that aren’t used to calculate values, but to store information, such as names and addresses of clients or perhaps a library of books.

  • Lesson 16: Managing Data

A form is simply a dialog box that lets you display or enter information one record (or row) at a time. It can also make the information more visually appealing and easier to understand.

  • Lesson 17: Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts

A pivot table sounds more difficult and confusing than it really is. Most people say they don’t like pivot tables, or they don’t understand them. In truth, they’re not that difficult at all.

  • Lesson 18: Printing Worksheets and Workbooks

Headers appear at the top of a worksheet. Footers appear at the bottom. Both can contain page numbers, and headers often contain the title of the worksheet and perhaps the date.

  • Lesson 19: Templates

Templates are worksheets that are already designed for you.

  • Lesson 20: Protecting, Saving, and Sharing Workbooks

Add protection to worksheets so that they can’t be edited by other people. You can lock cells or an entire worksheet.

    Online Colleges For Military Students

You’re serving in the military, and you want to continue your education at an online college.

Problem: As a military student, you’re facing an unpredictable schedule, at best.

GetEducated.com surveyed military advisors at online colleges to put together these helpful tips that showcase what to look for in an online college before you enroll.

Tip 1: Look for online colleges for military students that will be flexible if you are called away

If you are in the military, you may be deployed without warning. Your online college needs to be sensitive to this issue. Find out in advance what the school’s policy is regarding unpredictable absences and homework delays.

For instance, at Columbia College (based in Missouri), a military student who didn’t have advance warning and is deployed while taking online college classes can request an incomplete or an excused withdrawal.

In some cases military students may even be given more time to finish their assignments, says Gary Massey, Associate Dean for Adult Higher Education at Columbia Online.

“We will deal with things that are out of their control,” says Massey.

Similarly, military students at Colorado Technical University can expect flexibility from instructors, says Arthur Macias, Senior National Admissions Advisor of the school’s military division.

If a military student is called away for a few days and can’t get to a computer, “our instructors will let them turn it in later if that’s what they need to do,” says Macias.

“When dealing with military personnel, you have to realize you’re also dealing with the unexpected,” says Randi Reich Cosentino, senior vice president of academic administration at Strayer University. <>

Strayer “freezes” courses if military students are deployed or transferred. The students can then resume the course when they are able to, without having to start the course over again.

“This gives them peace of mind,” Cosentino says, “so personnel don’t hesitate in signing up for courses.”

Tip 2: Make sure your online course doesn’t require “real time” participation

Flexible scheduling is key for a military student enrolled in online college classes. Be wary of classes with live lectures and “synchronous” or real-time discussions, especially if you are in another time zone, halfway around the world.

Some schools offer live lectures—but also provide downloadable versions for students who can’t make it. This is the case with Colorado Technical.

“We archive lectures for all students,” says Macias.

Tip 3: Look for an online military college that offers easy, 24/7 access to information

Depending on where you are stationed, you might not have access to a computer. You also might not be able to phone the United States, especially if a school’s customer service lines operate only on a 9 to 5, U.S. schedule.

These days many online education schools offer the ability to use cellphones to download class material, check assignments, message instructors, and receive grades.

For example, says Macias, Colorado Technical offers “CTU Mobile” —a cellphone interface that allows easy access to information about a student’s academic work.

Many online colleges staff military bases with representatives so military students can easily access a real live human being if they encounter concerns about program access.

Others, such as Colorado Technical, offer round-the-clock phone support with financial aid and admissions advisors, as well as web chat functionality.

Tip 4: See if your college offers downloadable e-books or CD-ROMs, which will save you from having to tote heavy books from unit to unit

Macias says military students ask: ‘’We already have 50 pounds of life supplies in the field; if I’m moving from one unit to another, what do I do?'”

CTU ships books through military post five weeks before classes start, says Macias. Undergraduate and associate degree students are provided with e-books, but graduate students are issued copies digitally and in hardcover (when they are able to receive them).

Strayer offers a majority of its books as e-books, says Reich, with chapters available online. Military Students primarily use laptops to access these texts. “We do make some lectures downloadable to the iPhone, but it’s not a large contingent,” says Cosentino.

Excelsior College, on the other hand, offers CD-ROM-based courses. “They were designed for the military and they work very well for servicemembers who were deployed and don’t have Internet connections,” says Sue Dewan, executive director of the Center for Military Education at Excelsior.

Some students prefer “real” books, especially older students. American Military University mails textbooks to deployed online students, says Jim Sweizer, vice president of military education.

“For many years, we did provide textbooks to students and still do for the majority of classes. You get a mix of students—the older ones tend to like the textbooks and the younger ones like the books in electronic fashion.”

Sweizer worries that students who depend on downloading books electronically might be without texts if they can’t get Internet access. On the other hand, he says, ff the school were to provide pre-loaded handheld devices, it couldn’t put as much information on as it could provide on a website.

“The amount of coursework that you can insert into these handheld devices is not as tech-savvy as what you can do if it’s in an electronic classroom over the Internet,” he says. Also, course materials on handhelds aren’t interactive, while web courses can offer this functionality—letting online military students feel like they are part of a classroom experience, even when they are in a war zone.

Coming to Scranton for Fall 2017!

Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is designed to be completed over a two-year period with day, evening, and Saturday courses as well as on- and off-campus clinical hours. Each program also includes summer session courses and clinical lab hours.

Acceptance into Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is based on a selective admissions process with a maximum of 15 students selected annually.

    Degree information

Through a balance of classroom instruction and clinical experience, the student will acquire applied skills and knowledge in the field of Surgical Technology.

Surgical technologists work in the operating room under the direct supervision of a surgeon and a registered nurse. Surgical technologists help facilitate the draping, and prepping of the surgical patient. They gown, and glove other team members. They get all the instruments, supplies, equipment necessary for specific surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile team, surgical technologists will hand all necessary instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members.

A surgical technologist has a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sterile techniques, and patient safety concepts as well as ethical and legal concepts. A surgical technologist must have an understanding of the hospital organization, policies, and procedures.

Job opportunities and salaries in the healthcare specialty of surgical technology have been rising steadily over the last few years, and the U.S. Department of Labor predicts employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 30% from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Advances in medical technology have made surgery safer, and more operations are being done to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. The median annual wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 in May 2012.

Most surgical technologists are employed by hospitals, day-surgery centers with the remainder working in the offices of physicians. After two years of experience, a certified surgical technologist may apply to become a traveling surgical technologist.

Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical externships at local hospitals. Both career-specific and academic core courses are included. Students successfully completing the program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam (CST).

Surgical Technology Program classes are given days, nights and on weekends (based on the availability of the instructors). Clinical externships, however, must take place during the daytime.

    Objectives
