To some travelers, nothing beats the simplicity and relaxation offered at day’s end by a soak in a private, in-room Jacuzzi tub. While many properties offer hot tubs, spas and Jacuzzis in public areas, finding a room with such an amenity is not as easy. In-room Jacuzzis are often found as an amenity in romantic resorts and high-end suite properties, but don’t count them out completely from individual boutique or chain hotels.

Locating the Amenity

Step 1

Identify a regional area where you’d like to stay. Search Internet websites of suitable hotel properties within that area by selecting specialty amenities from the website’s reservation requirements checklist. If the site is lacking that feature, check the hotel room amenity list or room photographs. You can also search using keywords. Type in the location, the words “hotel” and “Jacuzzi” or “hot tub” to narrow your search.

Step 2

Search for hotels or resorts in large metropolitan areas or those that advertise features for couples, luxury in-room amenities, in-room spa features or suites. Most properties that have the unique feature highlight that fact somewhere on the property website or in print advertising. Check with the local visitors and convention bureau for additional guidance if you are not able to locate a property online.

Step 3

Call the individual hotel directly to see if in-room Jacuzzi tubs are offered in any of its rooms. Don’t rely on website descriptions, general reservation hotlines or non-affiliated reservation services for this information. On-site reservations or general hotel staff are more apt to know the exact features of each individual room.

Step 4

Ask the staff for a list of available room numbers that offer in-room Jacuzzis. Make certain the room listed has a fully functioning Jacuzzi, not just a deep bath tub.

Step 5

Make your reservation requesting one of the specific rooms. Note your confirmation number and the name of the agent that gave you the Jacuzzi information. Take that information with you upon hotel check in.

Tip

  • Many hotel properties are going green, which means cutting back on general hotel water use. Deep bath tubs and Jacuzzi tubs are being replaced with showers as a means of saving water and for guest safety. If you find a hotel room with a Jacuzzi, inquire as to future bath remodeling plans. This is especially important for reservations made far in advance of your travel dates. If you are choosing a hotel based on an amenity, you want to make sure that amenity is viable for your dates of travel.

What Does Herpes Look Like?

What does herpes look like is a common question from people who suspect they have genital herpes symptoms. A lot of people confuse it with other skin conditions such as a rash or pimples.

Many times people describe herpes blisters as an insect bite, razor burn, cut from shaving, an ingrown hair or simply think it’s a yeast infection.

Let’s take a closer look at each and compare them to a typical herpes blister.

1. An insect Bite: Certainly an insect bite can resemble a herpes blister but it really depends on the particular insect that does the biting. Insect bites tend to have a lot of swelling, itching and pain in the localized area of the bite. Additionally, if you look close enough you can actually see the bite marks on your skin. Of all the insect bites that I have had over the years, a fire ant bites and perhaps a flea bite most closely looks like a herpes blister but the differences are still major. Both bites begin looking like herpes sores but soon develops into a more “pimple-like” appearance. See the pictures of various insect bites below and compare them to the pictures of a typical herpes blister.

2. What Does Herpes Look like compared ti Razor Burn Rash and Cut from Shaving: According to WebMD.com. a razor burn or razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, are small, irritated bumps on the skin. They develop after shaving, when strands of hair curl back on themselves and grow into the skin. Razor bumps cause irritation and pimples. They also may cause scarring. Please see the pictures below and compare to the pictures of typical herpes sore. See the images below and compare.

Above Picture of Razor Burn on Neck

3. What does herpes look like compared to Ingrown Hairs: Sometimes an ingrown hair can look like herpes especially when a herpes outbreak is at its early stages. But as time passes the differences becomes quite apparent. First, an ingrown hair is when the sharp part of a hair curls back and grows sideways and into the skin. It begins with a tender feeling in the area and has a red appearance. As it becomes more infected the follicle fills with pus. They often occur in body locations with more course hair can be found. In women this is often the bikini areas near the pubic region. Similarly they can occur on men in the same area as well as in the beard area of the face. The primary differences are that a hair can be seen and when removed almost instant relief from the pain.

In contrast a herpes blister is often accompanied by more than one blister. They can range from one to many in the same area and often seemed connected. Although a herpes blister can encompass a hair follicle, pus rarely can be seen and when the hair is removed the pain will continue to linger. See the images below and compare.

Above Two Pictures Showing an Ingrown Hair

4. What Does Herpes Look Like Compared to Yeast Infections: The Mayo Clinic defines a vagina yeast infection as an inflammation of the vagina that is characterized by vaginal irritation, intense itchiness and vaginal discharge. A vaginal yeast infection affects your vagina and the tissues at the opening to your vagina. A vaginal yeast infection isn’t considered a sexually transmitted infection, although the fungus that causes the condition can be spread through oral-genital contact.

Now let’s compare yeast infections with a herpes outbreak. Although both can cause vaginal irritation and intense itching there is very little vagina discharge when having a herpes outbreak. Additionally, a yeast infection will continue to itch as long as the fungus remains untreated. The intensity of the itching usually subsides greatly once blisters form during a herpes outbreak. I’m going to spare showing you pictures of a vaginal yeast infection as most pictures that I found are pretty gross (I’m glad I have genital herpes instead of a yeast infection).

In some people Genital Herpes starts with an itch and a rash. The person’s skin can become red and tender. Swelling may develop until small blisters appear. Sometimes they gather in a larger blister. The blisters can be transparent, white, or yellow and filled with a clear fluid.

Genital herpes are generally more sensitive during a person’s first outbreak. After about a week or more genital herpes blisters usually begin to scab over and turn back into normal healthy skin again. Sometimes the new skin may have a different color for a period of time before returning to normal. Reoccurring outbreaks are generally milder and recovery time is commonly reduced over time.

An Ordinary Rash or Genital Herpes?

The most common way to distinguish an ordinary rash from a herpes rash is the location where it can appear in the body. Common genital herpes symptoms tend to be the same no matter where they’re located on the body. The main differences lie in the severity of the symptoms. It may cover a larger area and be more sensitive if it is a first outbreak.

Images of Herpes

If you want to get a better understanding of what does herpes look like, the best thing to do is to look at genital herpes pictures. Although looking at documented cases of genital herpes pictures online is the best way of seeing what the herpes blisters look like, many of pictures are scary and nearly always represent the most severe herpes outbreak symptoms.

What’s Next?

After viewing the images of herpes, you should be able to have a a good idea on what herpes looks like. If you suspect that you may be experiencing genital herpes symptoms it is critical that you visit your doctor as soon as possible. Preferably while the blisters are still visible and before they begin to scab over.

Your doctor can obtain a culture from the open herpes blister sores and send it to a lab for testing.

New look for popular Severn Hospice Midnight Walk

Severn Hospice has officially launched its Midnight Walks this week, revealing a new format for the popular sponsored walks.

This year’s walks will once again be open to ladies only but will feature a shorter 7km circular route for the first time instead of the usual 10km route.

The first walk is set to talk place at Telford College of Art and Technology on June 13 with a second walk planned for Shrewsbury Sports Village on July 11.

Following the cancelation of last year’s Midnight Walk in Telford due to a significant drop in participant numbers event organisers at the charity are hoping this year will be a great success.

Sarah Maythorne, fundraising events manager at Severn Hospice, said:

“We are delighted to announce that our Midnight Walks are back for another year. Following feedback from last year’s walk we have decided to revert back to a ladies-only format, having opened the event to men last year for our 25th anniversary, and we are shortening the route slightly so it will appeal to more women.

“Cancelling last year’s walk in Telford was a devastating blow for the hospice so we are hoping this year women from all over will once again step out in support of their local hospice.

“The walks may only be open to women over the age of 12 but men can still be involved by volunteering on the night. Without the support of over 200 hundred volunteers who give up their Saturday night to lend a hand we wouldn’t be able to hold such events.

“On the night of the Midnight Walks it is truly moving to see so many women come together to support their local hospice. Some ladies walk in memory of those who are no longer with us, some take part because they want to make a difference in their local community whilst others just want to enjoy a fun night out with friends.

“Every year thousands of women benefit from the specialist care provided by Severn Hospice either directly or because of the care given to someone they love. All of the care provided by Severn Hospice is free of charge; this is only possible thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the people of Shropshire and Mid Wales.”

Registration for the Midnight Walks is £10 and each lady taking part will be asked to raise as much sponsorship as they can.

For more information or to sign up for either Midnight Walk visit www.severnhospice.org.uk or call the Appeals team on 01952 221 351.

An In-Depth Look At The Fraud Charges Against Vitas Hospice Services –

United States. An In-Depth Look At The Fraud Charges Against Vitas Hospice Services

Earlier this month, the United States Department of Justice (пїЅDOJпїЅ) filed a suit against Vitas Hospice Services, L.L.C. and its subsidiary entities (пїЅVitasпїЅ) alleging that Vitas submitted false claims for hospice services which were excessive, unnecessary, or not provided, and also alleging that Vitas admitted patients to hospice who were not terminally ill.

Hospice Care

Hospice care is provided to terminally ill patients who have elected to forego curative treatment in exchange for palliative, comfort care in their own homes.пїЅ Hospice care is intended to make available the medical services necessary for a patient to be able to remain in his or her home without the need to run to the emergency room every time uncontrollable symptoms arise. Most hospice agencies derive a significant portion of their revenue from Medicare Part A for services provided to program beneficiaries, including Vitas, whose revenue is historically 90% derived from Medicare.

In order to be eligible for hospice care, a patient must be terminally ill with a prognosis of six months or less if the patientпїЅs illness runs its normal course. Hospice care is provided at four levels of care: routine home care, continuous home care (also called crisis care), inpatient respite care, and general inpatient care, with each level of care being reimbursed at vastly different rates. Specifically, in fiscal year 2013, MedicareпїЅs daily reimbursement for continuous care was $742 more per patient than the daily reimbursement rate for routine home care. Hospice care is not intended to be an around-the-clock service but rather intermittent care provided by a range of clinical and non-clinical personnel who make visits to a patientпїЅs home several times a week.

Continuous or пїЅCrisisпїЅ Care

The need for crisis care arises when a patientпїЅs symptoms become uncontrollable and require nursing care on a continuous basis for a brief period of time, which could range from eight hours (the minimum amount of continuous care necessary to bill for the higher rate) to several days. The first part of the DOJпїЅs complaint focuses on allegedly inappropriate and excessive billing for continuous care services. The DOJ alleges that Vitas set quotas for the percentage of crisis care which it expected its agencies to meet.пїЅ In one instance, for example, VitasпїЅs Vice President of Operations allegedly emailed a marketing employee and general manager demanding to know why the agencyпїЅs crisis care margins had dropped in a particular month.

The DOJпїЅs complaint alleges that Vitas conditioned its patients and their families to expect crisis care by misleading them into believing that the Medicare hospice benefit routinely covers around-the-clock care.пїЅ Because of this alleged marketing ploy, the DOJ surmises that patients sometimes chose Vitas over other providers. The complaint also alleges that Vitas disseminated written materials to its staff which incorrectly trained the staff on how and when to initiate crisis care. According to the complaint, several staff members gave investigators explanations of crisis care which were inconsistent with Medicare requirements.

According to the complaint, many patients failed to meet the eligibility requirements for crisis care. One Vitas nurse allegedly told the DOJ that, on more than one occasion, she would arrive at a patientпїЅs home to provide crisis care, only to learn that the patient was at church, the beauty parlor, or playing bingo. According to the complaint, an internal audit conducted by Vitas itself showed that only 50% of the continuous care records reviewed contained clinical documentation consistent with the Medicare requirements for such care. According to the DOJ, when compared to other hospice providers, Vitas bills Medicare for twice as many crisis care days as all other hospice providers combined. The complaint also alleges that VitasпїЅs crisis care billings were almost six times what would be expected if its crisis care statistics were in line with the national average.

The complaint also alleges specific instances of inappropriate use of continuous care, including treating a patientпїЅs back pain with a heating pad, performing daily dressing changes, and continuing to provide continuous care for patients whose acute symptoms had been treated and stabilized. According to the complaint, in one unfortunate incident, a Vitas nurse allegedly failed to recognize that a patient was suffering from opioid neurotoxicity and continued to administer higher levels of morphine to the patient, which only increased her pain and led to seizures. The complaint goes on to allege that Vitas then billed Medicare for 16 days of crisis care for the patient, whose critical condition was created by Vitas itself. On another occasion, Vitas allegedly offered crisis care to another patient simply because the patient was considering aggressive curative therapy instead of continuing hospice care.

Inappropriate Admissions

The second part of the DOJпїЅs complaint focuses on inappropriately admitting patients to hospice when such patients did not meet the Medicare criteria for hospice eligibility. The complaint alleges that VitasпїЅs corporate culture promoted increasing its agenciesпїЅ censuses without regard to whether services were actually necessary. Vitas allegedly paid bonuses to its non-clinical staff based on the number of patients enrolled in the program, and Vitas took adverse employment actions against marketers who failed to meet monthly admission goals. According to the complaint, one former manager told investigators that his bonuses were based on the number of patient admissions and the length of time that he could get a patient to stay on hospice services.

The DOJ further alleges that VitasпїЅs medical staff reported that they felt pressured by Vitas to admit or readmit patients who were inappropriate for hospice services. The complaint details an alleged incident in which one former Vitas admissions nurse said that if he did not admit a patient whom he found to be ineligible, he would be pressured to reconsider his decision until he finally determined that the patient was eligible. Another Vitas nurse purportedly stated that, at weekly meetings, discharging more than four patients per meeting was frowned upon by business managers, and medical staff were told to stop discharging patients even if patients were not eligible for hospice care. The same nurse also allegedly reported to investigators that Vitas instructed her to falsely write in the medical record that a patient experienced symptoms which he did not actually experience and further instructed her not to write in the medical records that a patientпїЅs health was improving.

According to the complaint, several Vitas physicians reported being under pressure from management to increase the number of patients admitted to hospice care and were oftenпїЅ overruled when they did not believe that patients were eligible for hospice or when they determined that patients should be discharged because they were not dying. The complaint includes a detailed description of several instances when, according to the DOJ, the medical record clearly did not support the need for hospice care.

Damages Sought by DOJ

Based on all of its allegations, the DOJ charges Vitas with knowingly presenting or causing to be presented false or fraudulent claims to Medicare in violation of the False Claims Act and seeks unspecified damages, which would be trebled as required by law. Finally, the DOJ also includes as causes of action payment by mistake and unjust enrichment.

Lessons for Providers

The allegations against Vitas are of course just that пїЅ merely allegations. But if proven to be true, some of VitasпїЅs practicesпїЅ are obviously flawed: donпїЅt instruct staff to falsify medical records; donпїЅt provide a higher level of service than is necessary; donпїЅt base discharges on non-clinical reasons. Some of VitasпїЅs alleged business practices, however, are not obviously problematic. From a business standpoint, what more accurate way is there to measure a marketerпїЅs performance than by looking at the number of admissions which she generates? What would be completely benign business practices in any other profession could subject someone to great civil and criminal liability in the healthcare arena.

Hospice providers are encouraged to use the DOJпїЅs complaint as a learning tool for understanding what types of issues and business practices are likely to attract the attention of investigators (and whistleblowers). Understanding the issues and potentially problematic business practices up front should enable providers to design compliance policies and procedures that will help them avoid some of the pitfalls that have befallen Vitas.
