How to configure sendmail (or postfix) to send confirmation emails using webmin?

    #

have a centos 5.5 64 bit xen vps. I have a php script that automatically sends confirmation emails for people who sign up, it’s not sending it right now, I’ve been told to install webmin, and then install sendmail or postfix and configure it to send emails

I installed webmin, installed sendmail, and now what? if you know how to configure postfix then I’ll unintall sendmail and install postfix.

I do not want to have an inbox i can use google apps email service to do so, just want to send automated emails

I can do it via ssh, without webmin, just wanna know how, any tutorial or explanation would be so appreciated.

if you know how to configure another software similar to posftix and sendmail, I have no problem using it rather than using those 2. Basically I don’t care what email server I use, as long as the job gets done

You can go to Servers > Sendmail Mail Server. (If you don’t see it, click Refresh Modules toward the bottom.)

In most cases you shouldn’t need much configuration. PHP’s mail() function should work once sendmail is installed and running.

If it still doesn’t work, could you:

    1. describe how your application sends mail (and/or post the code)
    2. describe what you see on Webmin’s sendmail page esp. errors if there are any
    3. send a message to yourself from the command line using the mail command and describe the result

    answered Sep 15 ’11 at 20:53

It’s nothing easier than installing Postfix from command line. Just install it with your favorite package manager yum install postfix. After that you configure it as described in the basic configuration readme .

If you think that this is too hard and not easy enough you should not install a mail server. Not knowing what you do will probably exposes the mail server to the public and will harm other innocent people (sending Spam).

On the other hand I do not understand is why people don’t use a search engine for these basics? First search hit reveals this complete HOWTO: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/postfix (This is 10 seconds work instead of 10 minutes writing this question).

    answered Sep 15 ’11 at 22:52

i can install easily (i have webmin remember? and I can google), that s not my question, my question is similar to this one bit.ly/r86vQT but didn t want you to read hundreds of line of code, so didn t talk about it,so i opened a ticket on clip-bucket, lets see what they say user Sep 15 ’11 at 23:13

thank you sir, I will remove sendmail, install postfix and follow the document 😀 user Sep 15 ’11 at 23:30

Cerberus Helpdesk or Cerb is a web-based commercial, platform-independent and open source email response system that is easy to integrate, customize and extend. It was created to decrease the need for time-consuming and redundant human interaction with customers.

Originally written as a trouble ticket system, Cerberus Helpdesk helps your sales, billing or support departments to be able to easily and quickly interact with inbound customer email inquiries. With more 12 years of continuous innovation, Cerb has been successfully deployed on over 18,000 organizations.

    Features at a glance

Key features include email fetch and retrieve support, adaptive anti-spam engine, web-based support portal, service level agreements, due date management and schedules, email templates, as well as a comprehensive knowledge base.

When using Cerb, your employees will be able to work efficiently, capture feedback and collaborate with customers better, from anywhere in the world, automate workflow, flag opportunities, share expert knowledge, stay informed, build shared workspaces, manage tasks, reply to huge number of emails, as well as to remember anything about anyone.

    Pricing and availability

While you will be able to download a free trial of Cerb, or grab the latest source code from GitHub and compile it yourself, pricing starts from 252 USD (202 EUR) per seat if you install the software on your hardware, as well as 25 USD (20 EUR) per month per seat if you host Cerberus Helpdesk in the cloud.

    Supported operating systems and requirements

At the moment, Cerberus Helpdesk has been successfully tested with numerous GNU/Linux distributions, as well as with the BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems. It supports the Apache, Nginx or IIS web servers, the MySQL 5.0 or newer database server, and PHP 5.3 or newer, which should have the gd, mysql, mailparse, imap, dom, json, spl and mbstring extensions installed. The xcache and memcache PHP extensions are recommended.

    New in Cerberus Helpdesk 7.0.4:

    • We design major functionality updates with backwards compatibility in mind — both technically and conceptually. This means that when you update between two versions in the same generation (e.g. 6.8 to 6.9), you can expect your environment to still meet the same system requirements, and your workers should still feel completely familiar with how the interface and common functionality works.
    • Every two years or so, we plan and release a generational update. Those are the milestone where we allow ourselves to break backwards compatibility. We remove features and concepts that have been deprecated by new improvements along the way, and we introduce new features and concepts based on thousands of ongoing discussions with the community and several more years of accumulated experience. Generational updates may be a bit more disruptive than typical updates, but they are where Cerb takes big leaps forward.
    • Each generation of Cerb has had a central theme:
    • In 4.x, the theme was a clean slate. We completely rewrote Cerb from scratch to use modern design principles, to be highly stable and secure, to enable a much faster pace of development, and to be extensible through plugins with our Devblocks framework.

    Compare Email Clients

How to Choose the Right Email Client

An email client is a software computer program that is used to efficiently and effectively manage emails. A good email client can save you time and energy as it aggregates all of your email addresses into one spot while giving you functionality not found in most web-mail solutions. When searching for an email client, there are certain features you should look for. Possessing basic functionality such as HTML Support and UTF-8 can assure that you never run into problems with formatting. Message labeling and virtual folders will make organizing your emails extremely simple while image blocking and spam filtering will keep you safe from unwarranted solicitation.

Make sure to use the filters on the left hand side to find the best email software for you. First, select the platform of the computer from which you will be accessing the email client, this will assure that the software will function properly on your system. Use the Software License filter to differentiate between paid and free email clients. Then use the General and Message Features filters to find a solution with all the tools you need to take control of your emails.

    Software License

The type of software license that the email client is distributed under.

    • Free Software License. A free software license will usually allow for use, alteration, and even resale of the software without any fee.
    • Proprietary. A proprietary software license can be purchased for personal use.

The chart above displays the percentage breakdown of software license across all Email Clients on SoftwareInsider.

    General Features

These general features reflect the functionality of the email client.

    • Conversation View. The conversation view feature consolidates related replies into one email. This creates a thread of back and forth emails, creating a conversation out of several messages.
    • Encryption. Email encryption secures the contents of the message through authentication protocols and cryptography. This protects the content of the messages from being intercepted and read by unintended third parties. Some email software deal exclusively with providing secure encryption and validation functionality.
    • HTML Support. An email client with HTML support will be able to read and present HTML tags in the emails contents, whereas an email software without HTML support will not be able to transform text dependent on HTML tags.
    • Image Blocking. The image blocking feature can be set to block images in your emails by default. This will speed up your email load time and protect you from inappropriate spam.
    • Local Spam Filtering. Local spam filtering refers to the email software’s ability to filter out spam after it has been distributed to you from the mail server, allowing your local computer to automatically filter out unwanted mail.
    • PGP Support. PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy, which is a legacy encryption program. Email software with this feature will have increased privacy and security by supporting the PG framework.
    • Phishing Filtering. Phishing is a way to extract personal information from a victim who would not normally give that information to the perpetrating party. The victim gives this information to the other party because they are fooled to believe that the other party is actually a trusted source, such as the victim’s bank or health insurance provider.
    • Scheduled Backup. A scheduled backup will automatically create backup copies of your emails in order to prevent valuable data loss in the event of a system failure or other error.
    • Server Spam Filter. The server spam filtering features signifies that the email software allows the server to screen for and remove spam emails before they even reach your computer.
    • UTF-8. UTF-8 is a character encoding unicode. This allows you to write emails in a variety of fonts.
    • Virtual Folders. Virtual folders allow you to easily organize your emails in folders which you create.

The chart above displays the percentage breakdown of general features across all Email Clients on SoftwareInsider.

    Message Features

These features relate to the type of messaging functionality included in the email clients.

    • Bi-Directional Text Support. Bi-directional text support allows emails to be read and written in any language. An email software without bi-directional text support can only support languages that read left to right (ex. English or Russian); email software with bi-directional text support can display languages that read right to left as well (ex. Arabic or Hebrew).
    • Bottom-Posts Replies. The bottom-posts replies feature automatically posts a reply to an email underneath the original quoted email in order to provide context.
    • Message Labeling. The message labeling feature allows you to add labels to an email or ‘conversation’ (group of subsequent emails). These labels act in the same way that folders do, in that they allow you to organize your emails by category. The difference between folders and labels is that more than one label can be added to an email.
    • Reformat Received Messages. Reformatting received messages allows you to change the layout of an email that was sent by someone else.
    • Scheduled Message Sending. Scheduled message sending allows you to delay sending a message until a specified time.
    • Signatures. The signatures feature signifies the ability to add a signature with your name, title, and contact information underneath any email you send automatically.
    • Spell Check. Spell check automatically checks your spelling inside of the email in order to eliminate typos.

The chart above displays the percentage breakdown of message features across all Email Clients on SoftwareInsider.

Hollywood s 100 Favorite TV Shows

    11:43 AM 9/16/2015

You can only have ONE favorite show. Here, thousands of the town s insiders pulled the trigger and name theirs in THR s first entertainment-industry ranked TV list, as the stars and creators reveal their never-told stories (Bill Cosby as Sam Malone?!).

    Courtesy of Photofest

What s the best TV show of all time? Who knows? This poll is strictly about favorite shows, the programs people in Hollywood hold nearest to their hearts that remind them of better times or speak to their inner child or inspire their creativity or just help them unwind after a crappy day at the studio even if one or two of the programs listed here aren t exactly masterpieces of the medium.

Last year, THR published the world s first movie list based on a polling of Hollywood pros. This year s TV survey was handled in a similar fashion. We asked more than 2,800 industry people including 779 actors, 365 producers and 268 directors, among others to choose their favorite series of all time (excluding talk shows and news programs). Although the survey was anonymous, some big names were willing to go on the record. My favorite is Twin Peaks , says Damon Lindelof. co-creator of Lost (No. 15 on the list, five above David Lynch s mystery). It quite literally changed the way my brain worked. Mike Hopkins. CEO of Hulu, picks The Sopranos (No. 6). It s just classic. It had everything, he says. But even when respondents didn t volunteer their own identities for the public, the results of this survey are full of surprises, starting with the show Hollywood chose as its all-time No. 1 favorite.

How to get HTTPS: Setting up SSL on your website – Expert

    #

How to get HTTPS: Setting up SSL on your website

If you are collecting ANY sensitive information on your website (including email and password), then you need to be secure. One of the best ways to do that is to enable HTTPS, also known as SSL (secure socket layers), so that any information going to and from your server is automatically encrypted. The prevents hackers from sniffing out your visitors sensitive information as it passes through the internet.

Your visitors will feel safer on your site when they see the lock while access your website knowing it s protected by a security certificate.

    Overview

The best thing about SSL is it s simple to set up, and once it s done all you have to do is route people to use HTTPS instead of HTTP. If you try to access your site by putting https:// in front of your URLs right now, you ll get an error. That s because you haven t installed an SSL Certificate. But don t worry we ll walk you through setting on up right now!

Setting up HTTPS on your website is very easy, just follow these 5 simple steps:

    1. Host with a dedicated IP address
    2. Buy a certificate
    3. Activate the certificate
    4. Install the certificate
    5. Update your site to use HTTPS

Step 1: Host with a dedicated IP address

In order to provide the best security, SSL certificates require your website to have its own dedicated IP address. Lots of smaller web hosting plans put you on a shared IP where multiple other websites are using the same location. With a dedicated IP, you ensure that the traffic going to that IP address is only going to your website and no one else s.

An affordable host I recommend for a dedicated IP is StableHost. At this time it s under $6/month, but you can get it cheaper if you order for a full year. They re my host and I ve been blown away with their support and performance. Oh, and here s a coupon for 40% off: expert40

If you don t have a plan with a dedicated IP you can ask your current web host to upgrade your account to have a dedicated IP address. There will probably be a charge for it it could be one-time or monthly fees.

    Step 2: Buy a Certificate

Next you ll need something that proves your website is your website kind of like an ID Card for your site. This is accomplished by creating an SSL certificate. A certificate is simply a paragraph of letters and numbers that only your site knows, like a really long password. When people visit your site via HTTPS that password is checked, and if it matches, it automatically verifies that your website is who you say it is and it encrypts everything flowing to and from it.

Technically this is something you can create yourself (called a self-signed cert ), but all popular browsers check with Certificate Authorities (CA s) which also have a copy of that long password and can vouch for you. In order to be recognized by these authorities, you must purchase a certificate through them.

NameCheap is where I buy my certificates. They have a few options, but the one that I find best is the GeoTrust QuickSSL. At this time it s $46 per year, and it comes with a site seal that you can place on your pages to show you re secure which is good for getting your customers to trust you. You ll simply buy it now, and then set it up by activating and installing it in the next steps.

    Step 3: Activate the certificate

Note: Your web host may do this step for you check with them before proceeding. This can get complicated and if you can wait 1-2 days it may be best to let them do it.

If you re activating the certificate yourself, the next step is to generate a CSR. It s easiest to do this within your web hosting control panel such as WHM or cPanel. Go to the SSL/TLS admin area and choose to Generate an SSL certificate and Signing Request . Fill out the fields in the screen below:

Host to make cert for is your domain name, and the contact email can be blank. When you ve filled it out, you ll see a screen like this:

    Step 4: Install the certificate

Note: Your web host may also do this step for you too check with them before proceeding. This can get complicated and if you can wait 1-2 days it may be best to let them do it.

If you re installing up the certificate yourself, this is the easiest step you ll ever do. You have the certificate in hand, all you need to do is paste it into your web host control panel. If you re using WHM.CPanel, click the Install an SSL Certificate from under the SSL/TLS menu.

Paste it into the first box and hit submit. That s it! Now try to access your site via https://www.domain.com you should be secure!

Step 5: Update your site to use HTTPS

At this point if you go to https://yoursite.com you should see it load! Congrats, you ve successfully installed SSL and enabled the HTTPS protocol! But your visitors aren t protected just yet, you need to make sure they re accessing your site through HTTPS!

Keep in mind that you typically only need to protect a few pages, such as your login or cart checkout. If you enable HTTPS on pages where the user isn t submitting sensitive data on there, it s just wasting encryption processing and slowing down the experience. Identify the target pages and perform one of the two methods below.

You can update all links to the target pages to use the HTTPS links. In other words, if there s a link to your cart on your home page, update that link to use the secure link. Do this for all links on all pages pointing to the sensitive URLs.

However, if you want to ensure that people can only use specific pages securely no matter what links they come from, it s best to use a server-side approach to redirect the user if it s not HTTPS. You can do that with a code snippet inserted on top of your secure page. Here s one in PHP:

Another server-side approach is to use mod-rewrite. This won t require you to change any of your website files, but will need you to modify your apache configuration. Here s a nice mod-rewrite cheat sheet. or just use this example:

This will ensure that if anyone accesses a page via HTTP they will automatically be redirected to HTTPS.

    Tips

    • Understand that HTTPS doesn t mean information on your server is secure, it only protects the TRANSFER of data from your visitor s computer to yours, and the other way too. Once the sensitive data is on your server it s up to you to keep that data safe (encrypt in database, etc).
    • Some people just look for a lock on the page, not on the browser. After you ve installed SSL you might want to try adding a lock icon on your pages just to let them know it s secure if they don t look in the url bar.

    Summary

What makes a website secure? A properly installed security certificate.

Congratulations! You ve successfully protected your website by installing an SSL cert and made your visitors less prone to attacks. You can breathe easy knowing that any information they submit on your website will be encrypted and safer from packet sniffing hackers.

    Resources Used

    God of The internet says:

A SSL cert means nothing these days. Its a false sense of security. Anything you do online is open to public attacks and eyes. This includes bank logins and transactions. The SSL cert is just a way for these companies to grab your money. As a security expert, I can tell you this from first hand. I can sit anywhere in a public place where people use their wireless device and steal any info they send across the airwaves including bluetooth.

This appears to be the internet equivalent of saying we are all going to die .yes but in the mean time we all have to live, so comments like this are extremely unhelpful with out giving a solution, so thanks for increasing the sense of vulnerability and may be you can give your solution? If SSL is useless then what do you suggest?

    Hadi Altaha says:

No excuse any more for not having EVERYTHING SSL on the internet. It is too easy (thank you for this still relevant article) AND now always FREE thanks to Let s Encrypt (https://letsencrypt.org/ ). I use Dreamhost, and the combination is truly a fix it and forget it solution. Just apply for the certificate, follow the rules on this article and you are done. It automatically renews.

    NO MORE EXCUSES!

Thanks for your information. Today, I read about HTTPS. Google Says, Its a Ranking signal. So, I am going to buy a ssl certificate. Can you please tell me which ssl provider is best?

Which is best: Exchange 2010 archiving vs. third-party tools

Archiving products have been around for quite some time, but you may not need them with Exchange 2010’s out-of-the-box archiving capabilities. Then again, maybe you do need a third-party archiving tool. Let’s find out.

An archive is not a backup of your data, although some tools use backups as their “archives.” What’s the difference? Backups are typically focused on data restoration in the event of disaster or corruption, and they’re usually overwritten after a short time. Archives, on the other hand, are held for many years (in some cases, 7 to 10, depending on government regulations). Archives are also driven less by a desire to restore content and more by the necessity to turn over materials in a legal matter. Any company, large or small, can be required to turn over its electronic communications data, email being the most common item requested.

[ Discover the key technologies to speed archival storage and get quick data recovery in InfoWorld’s Archiving Deep Dive PDF special report. | Stay abreast of key Microsoft technologies in our Technology: Microsoft newsletter. ]

The cost of e-discovery for companies that do not have an archive product in place can be astronomical. Especially costly in the e-discovery process when you don’t have archiving is the proliferation of PST files on users’ desktops due to mailbox quotas imposed to keep the mailbox archives off the data center’s costly SAN. Such local storage may be cheaper and require less IT effort, but this PST data is considered part of the scope for a legal request and must be searched in the event of a legal matter.

What Exchange 2010 offers for e-discovery and compliance

Exchange 2010 SP1 offers several features for managing archive email data:

Journaling can be configured to capture all email in transit in your organization (with Exchange Standard) or directly to specific mailboxes or distribution lists (with Exchange Premium, which requires an enterprise license). Journaling can help meet compliance objectives because it provides a way to copy the data. But it also increases your storage requirements, doesn’t provide a tamper-proof product, and doesn’t stop users from using local PSTs — so it may not hold up in court on its own. In addition, journaling doesn’t provide the e-discovery indexing and search capabilities you can find in an archive product, and it doesn’t have retention configuration settings.

Personal Archive allows all users to have personal archive mailboxes that can be set up in the same production database as their production mailbox. It can also be set in a separate database, a separate server and database, or even the cloud. Users can manually move data to the archive, or data can be moved automatically through retention tags that are automatically or manually applied to the emails by users. The emails (and attachments) are moved — not copied — and the data is indexed for easier discovery through a multiple-mailbox search. The archive can be backed up and/or made more highly available through the Database Availability Group (DAG) continuous-replication product built into Exchange.

Automating Mail Merge using Excel VBA – Stack Overflow #mail #merge #from

    #

My Name is Hema and this is my First Macro and first post in Stack overflow.

I have created a macro in Excel where I can mail-merge data from Excel into Word Letter Template automatically and save the individual files in the folder.

I have a Employee data in Excel and I can generate any Employee letter using that Data and can save the individual Employee letter as per the Employee name.

I have been successful to run mail-merge automatically and save individual files as per the Employee name. And every time it runs the file for one person it will give the status as Letter Already Generate so that it wont duplicate any Employee records.

Now the only problem I am facing is the output in all the merged files the output is same as the first row. Example: if my Excel has 5 Employee details I am able to save the 5 individual merged files on each employee name, however the merged data if of the first employee who is in Row 2 only. In all the files the data is showing for the first row employee.

I couldn’t attached the files but my rows have the below data: Row A. has S.No. Row B: has Empl Name Row C: has Processing Date Row D: has Address Row E: Firstname Row F: Business Title Row G: Shows the status (if the letter is generated it shows “Letter Generated Already” after running the macro or it shows blank if it is new record entered.

Also request someone to add a code where I can save the output (merged file) also in PDF other than DOC file. So the merged files will be in two formats one in Doc and the other one in PDF formats.

Thank you very much in Advance hope to listen from someone shortly.

To save the file in pdf format use

It looks to me that when you are executing the mail merge, it should create a file with ALL of the letters, so when you open it, it would appear that the first letter is the one that is getting saved, but if you scroll down the word file that you have saved, you may find each letter on a new page.

Instead, you want to execute the merge one letter at a time.
To fix this, change the lines as follows:

You need to use r-1 because Word is going to use the record number in its dataset, and since the data starts in row 2, and the counter r is related to the row, you need r-1 .

You don’t need to open up word each time, so put all of the code setting the datasource of the mail merge and creating the word doc outside of your main loop.

Also, instead of checking the Excel file for the Employee name to create the file name, you could do this after you merge the document. For me, this is a little more intuitive to link the file name to the letter you have just merged. To do this update the line further to:

Then immediately before saving the file you can do this:

    Hope this helps.
