Getting An MBA Without A Bachelor s Degree

Is it possible to get into an MBA program without a bachelor’s degree? While many schools have strict admission policies, some, including the prestigious University of Chicago, will consider MBA candidates without a bachelor’s degree.

A mid-career IT professional is looking to get into management, but without a bachelor’s degree, an MBA seems out of reach. What he doesn’t know is that today some MBA programs will consider and accept candidates who can demonstrate the right skills and experience (along with high GMAT scores). If MBA isn’t an option, our correspondent has plenty of senior-level certifications to choose from in the project management, IT governance and information security arena. In either case, both paths prove to be a better option than going back to finish a long-lapsed bachelor’s degree.

You have enough experience and certifications under your belt that I’m pretty sure that going back to finish your bachelor’s is neither an attractive nor a sufficiently valuable option at your stage of career to be worth undertaking. Given that you’re looking for a transition to information security and management, however, you may want to consider going after an MBA. Some programs will accept hours toward a bachelor’s combined with on-the-job experience and professional certifications in lieu of a bachelor’s degree, so that option may not be as far-fetched as it sounds upon first audition.

For example, University of Chicago will consider candidates for their MBA program without a bachelor’s degree who work full-time and have an impressive professional track record (along with a completed GMAT). Other universities will consider candidates without a bachelor’s who have substantial management experience, professional certifications, or other worthy credentials, all on a case by case basis. Make sure that you’re looking at MBA programs that are accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). AACSB does allow some MBA programs to make exceptions, including accepting students who don’t have a bachelor’s degree, under certain circumstances, so this might be an option for you.

An MBA from an accredited institution could be a big boost into management, if you’re willing to put in two to three years of concerted part-time effort to earn such a degree.

On the other hand, if you’re not interested in returning to school, you can also chase the management track through a series of senior-level certifications, including the Project Management Professional (PMP). and any of a variety of governance and business process related credentials. Some certifications to consider include the ITIL and CGEIT, or other IT governance related credentials that can help you advance your prospects of landing a management job. Take a look at our list of the Best IT Governance Certifications to learn more.

InfoSec credentials can also offer excellent career prospects, especially if combined with the preceding items from the governance and project management arena. Here again, you can check out our list of the Best Information Security Certifications for pointers to some good credentials. Given that you’ve already earned the Security+ and the old MCSA/MCSE Security elements, you may be ready to jump right onto CISSP or CISM, either or both of which I’d urge you to consider and possibly pursue.

Given a plan to up your visible skills and knowledge, and the time and effort necessary to train up for some new certifications, I’m confident that you’ll be able to steer your career in the management direction. And don’t discount the MBA as an option just because you don’t have your bachelor’s degree. Whether now or in the future, an MBA degree might be the right ticket to get you to the position you want to be in.

Best wishes for your continued career development plans and activities. Thanks again for submitting your questionnaire information; hopefully, the answers will help guide you toward some important decisions.

Has The One-Year MBA Come Of Age?

by: John A. Byrne on January 25, 2016 | 11 Comments 11,912 Views

January 25, 2016

There s a startling revelation for those reading the tea leaves in today s 2016 Financial Times MBA ranking: The rise of the one-year MBA program. For the first time ever, a 10-month MBA program topped the FT list with INSEAD s No. 1 showing. INSEAD invented the one-year MBA format more than half a century ago, and the one-year model has become a viable alternative to the more traditional two-year offerings.

More importantly, perhaps, is how well shorter MBA programs fared in the FT s latest overall ranking. As Matt Symonds. a long-time business school observer, wisely notes, The strong performance of the one-year program is one of the most interesting aspects of this FT ranking. One-year programs are now firmly entrenched among the top schools, with Cambridge Judge, IMD and HEC Paris all climbing in the 2016 ranking to join INSEAD and IE Business School among the world s top 15 full-time MBA programs.

That s not all. More striking, writes Symonds. a director of the MBA admissions consulting firm Fortuna Admissions, is the fact that the shorter MBA course length is now in the majority among the Top 50 in the FT ranking, accounting for 26 places. Of those, close to 70% improved or maintained their position compared to 2015. Compare this to the seven MBA programs that suffered the biggest drop, six of which are two-year programs in the U.S.

TOP ONE-YEAR OPTIONS IN THE U.S. INCLUDE KELLOGG, CORNELL NOTRE DAME

One-year programs, of course, are far more popular in Europe than they are in the U.S. where Northwestern University s Kellogg School of Management, Cornell University s Johnson Graduate School of Management, Emory University s Goizueta School, USC s Marshall School, and Notre Dame s Mendoza School of Business are among the most prominent U.S. institutions offering one-year options. But one-year programs do offer some fairly significant monetary advantages over the more typical two-year offering.

For one thing, the tuition and fees are virtually cut in half. For another, the opportunity costs of attending a one-year program are considerably lower. Losing only a year of income feels a lot better than two full years, though the actual time of a two-year program is 18 months and includes a paid summer internship to help defray the costs of your education. Della Bradshaw, the FT s business education editor, points out that most of the newer MBA programs launched in recent years are one-year options and doubts professors who prefer the longer programs. “When you talk to professors with two-year programs they will always say we can’t teach students what they need to know in two years, but what’s clear is that they can,” says Bradshaw, in a video interview .

And if you plan to stay in your industry or return to your pre-MBA employer, a one-year program may make the most sense for you. It s not accident that 32% of INSEAD s graduating MBAs who went into consulting last year returned to their pre-MBA employers. Overall, one out of every five graduates in 2015 got a job with the employer they left to go to INSEAD.

THE DOWNSIDE OF THE ONE-YEAR OPTION

The downside? In most cases, you lose the opportunity to do a summer internship which in certain industries, particularly consulting and finance, often is essential to getting a full-time job offer. The internship certainly makes it easier to transition into an entirely different career or discipline than the one you were in. None of these disadvantages are true for all applicants. INSEAD graduates, for example, have been very successful at using its accelerated MBA program to make transitions. Last year, 80% of INSEAD s graduating MBAs changed sector, country or job function. A remarkable 26% accomplished the triple jump, using the degree to switch industry, function and country.

Still, jamming a full MBA curriculum with electives in a year or less doesn t allow for the deep reflection, the bonding, or the networking opportunities that are a critical part of the degree s enduring value. “One of the value propositions of getting an MBA is to do a lot of self-reflecting and deep learning,” says Betsy Massar. a Harvard MBA and founder of Master Admissions. “That argues for a two-year program for students who really want to grow. It doesn’t mean INSEAD isn’t a great program. But you have to take every ranking with a grain of salt, and it’s crazy to imagine there is no regional bias involved in the Financial Times ranking.”

Would-be MBA candidates shouldn t make the one- vs. two-year decision lightly. Applicants have to stop for a second and ask themselves whether they are paying for three letters or an education that will have an indelible impact on their careers, advises Jeremy Shinewald. founder and CEO of mbaMission, a leading admissions consulting firm. Employers expect skills they don t expect the MBA brand. In most cases, the applicants we see would be better served by receiving more education by partaking in a two program. And, it should be noted that the opportunity to practice during the summer is invaluable it not only allows applicants to apply their learning, but it also lets their learning from a very intense first year sink in.

I will be graduating from the Notre Dame One Year MBA in May. I am leaving the program as a changed man. In comparison to my two year classmates, the education is the same, but the career search process is more difficult, it has to be initiated as soon as one steps on campus and one should have a good idea of where one wants to end up. My class did great in the job market so far, almost 70% with offers with 2.5 months to go, with most of them changing careers. I transitioned from finance to consulting pretty easily. Having an extremely helpful alumni base helps as well.

Is that why the best MBA in Europe (INSEAD) is only 10 months in duration?

For b-schools it can be all about finding your niche matching your strengths, reputation, etc. E g if Princeton offered a 10 month MBA I can see it being a very attractive option, especially to many Asians. Maybe Yale should also be doing that.

Personal MBA Coach

While this is often the case, as shown in the article, a number of students in one year programs actually do make a career transition. If you want to do so coming from a one year program you just have to do a little more leg work and recruiting on your own.

Two year programs are for career changers. One year programs are for non-career changers.

Dual MHA/MBA Program

The Cornell dual Master in Health Administration (MHA)/Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree is offered by the Sloan Program in Health Administration together with the S. C. Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson). Accomplished in just 24 months (a summer immersion at Johnson followed by two Johnson and two Sloan semesters) the combination of the Sloan MHA and the Johnson MBA couples a strong foundation in general management with specialized knowledge in healthcare. Armed with powerful knowledge, skills, and applied experience, our dual-degree graduates have a distinct edge and great flexibility in shaping a dynamic and meaningful career.

The Johnson MBA provides a solid base in all the functional areas of business—accounting, finance, economics, marketing, operations management, strategy, and leadership. In addition, the school offers the flexibility to tailor your own curriculum and the opportunity to develop expertise in specialized areas that, when combined with healthcare, can provide unique and highly valuable strengths. Among these are entrepreneurship, consulting, finance, and sustainable global enterprise. Johnson emphasizes performance learning—exceptionally valuable hands-on experience in which students apply theoretical frameworks to real business problems with responsibility for outcomes.

The Sloan MHA delivers a comprehensive foundation in the health field and—like Johnson—encourages students to tailor their program to their own goals. Specialized health focused courses are offered in a number of areas including health care organizations, finance, organizational behavior and human resources management, health policy, health care ethics, legal aspects of health care, quality improvement, long term care, health facility planning and design, and supply chain management. The MHA program also provides numerous resources for practical experience. In addition to management positions in a wide range of healthcare organizations, Sloan graduates also hold positions in the pharmaceutical industry, health insurance, management consulting, financial institutions, state and federal policy agencies, and more.

When you graduate from Cornell, you add the university’s distinguished Ivy League pedigree and reputation for innovative, independent thinking to your resume. Both the Johnson MBA program and the Sloan Program in Health Administration have a long and distinguished history of leadership and excellence in their fields. Both are also at the forefront of new opportunity—advancing knowledge and practice in their fields. Both programs are deliberately small and intensely collaborative, offering exceptional applied learning opportunities and the chance to work in small, dynamic teams.

The Cornell MHA/MBA is an 85-credit, 24-month dual degree program. Students enter during the Summer semester and take an intensive general management core at Johnson. During the Fall and Spring semesters of their first year, they take a combination of Sloan and Johnson required and elective courses. During the summer between their first and second year, there is a required ten week internship which must be approved by advisors in both programs. In the Fall and Spring semesters of their second year, students again take a combination of required and elective Sloan and Johnson courses, including a required Capstone course at Sloan and the opportunity to take an Immersion Learning course sequence at Johnson.

Who should apply to the dual MHA/MBA program?

Applicants without work experience: The dual MHA/MBA program is appropriate for highly qualified students who are interested in gaining a competitive advantage on the MHA job market (the MBA job market requires work experience). Applicants must have performed in the top 5% of their undergraduate class, score above 700 on the GMAT (and above the 80th percentile on the quantitative exam) or above the 80th percentile on the GRE, have demonstrated leadership, and some healthcare experience. Important note: The summer immersion portion of the dual degree begins in early May! Undergraduate seniors applying to the dual degree program must graduate with their Bachelor’s degree prior to beginning the summer immersion at Johnson. Please see below for how to apply to Sloan and Johnson.

Applicants with work experience: Highly qualified applicants with 3-4 years of full time work experience (not necessarily in health care) will be well-positioned to enter either the MBA or MHA job markets. Competitive applicants have a mean GMAT score of 700 and have a mean GPA of 3.5. Please see below for how to apply to Sloan and Johnson.

Online MBA in Economics

How to Choose an Online MBA in Economics Program

If you ve decided that an MBA in economics is right for you, then it is time to start narrowing down the list of schools you are interested in. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you through this process.

Search for schools in your area

Even though you are looking for online programs, it can be helpful to choose a school that is within a 100 mile radius of your home. Online students often report that they enjoy having the ability to visit campus if they want to. In addition, schools often partner with local businesses, meaning a school in your area will have a better chance of helping you find a job close to home.

  • Compare student outcomes data

Many schools will readily provide this information on their website; however, if you can t find it, be sure to contact the school and ask for it. This data should include graduation rates, employment rates, and the compensation levels of recent graduates. When looked at side-by-side, this information can give you an easy glimpse of program quality.

  • Estimate the expected costs of your programs

Prospective students often underestimate the total cost of their program. Make sure you calculate the total number of credit hours you will need to graduate, and multiply that by cost per credit hour. Do not forget to include the cost of supplies, internet, and time you will spend not earning an income. Additionally, compare financial aid options, different schools may offer better financial aid packages and/or scholarships that can offset the cost of education.

  • Check that classes will fit in with your schedule

One of the central benefits of online education is flexibility. However, some programs will require set meeting times, synchronous workshops, and mandatory campus visits. Be sure that you are aware of all time commitments and that they will fit into your current schedule.

  • Look for partnerships with local businesses

The main objective of getting your MBA in economics is to find a job with a healthy salary in a field you enjoy. Attending a school that is well connected with local businesses can be an advantage. Many of these partners will offer internships to students that can lead to full-time employment or provide the network and experience you need to get a job elsewhere.

  • Make sure the program is accredited

Accreditation is the formal review process that ensures a school is offering a reputable program that adheres to minimum academic standards. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is the national agency that accredits for undergraduate, master s and doctoral programs in business and accounting. By checking a program s status with the AACSB, you can be confident you are receiving a recognized, quality degree. Employers generally will not hire job candidates who possess a degree from a school that is not accredited, and schools will not accept academic credentials from an unaccredited program.

  • Talk to current students and/or recent alumni

One of the best resources when it comes to making a final decision on an online MBA in Economics program is actual students and graduates. They can give you an unbiased, real-world take on how the program has served them, what they have liked, and what they have disliked. Ask an admissions counselor to put you in touch with a current student or recent alumni. Alternatively, use LinkedIn or Facebook to find and reach out to people.

  • What Certifications and Licenses are Needed for a Career in Economics?

Earning an MBA in economics online can go a long way towards acquiring a job in the field, and there are a number of certificates that can help strengthen your resume. Some of these certificates are prerequisites for higher-level jobs in the field. Below, we ve highlighted two industry standard certificates.

    MBA Rankings 2015: Europe s Top One-Year MBA Programs #mba #programs #in

    MBA Rankings

The ranking is split into three categories: Best International One-Year Business Schools; Best Two-Year International Business Schools; and America’s Best Business Schools. MBA programs in Europe tend to be one year in length.

Alumni of INSEAD’s class of 2010 realized a five-year gain of $171,200, and it took the typical graduate 2.4 years to pay back their investment in the MBA.

Consulting was the top career industry for INSEAD graduates — 40% were employed by consultancy firms. McKinsey Company hired 120 graduates last year, Boston Consulting Group another 70, and Bain Company 44.

INSEAD’s stellar performance is illustrated by the fact that graduates from Stanford Graduate School of Business, the top ranked US program by Forbes, had a five-year gain of $89,100, and it took them 4.2 years to pay back their investment.

A one-year program offers a quicker ROI. It took only 2.6 years for the MBA classes of 2010 to pay off a one-year program, according to Forbes data. Two year international programs took 3.4 years to pay off; their US counterparts four years.

IMD slipped to No. 2 in this year’s ranking. Its graduates earned a median five-year salary gain of $163,600. IMD’s top employers included Accenture. Hilti, Dow Chemical, and Cisco Systems. But its MBA comes with a high price tag — $91,380 versus $68,740 for INSEAD.

The Best International One-Year Business Schools ranking is dominated by European schools. SDA Bocconi of Italy is ranked fourth, Spain’s IE Business School fifth.

There is also a strong showing for UK-based schools, with Cranfield School of Management, Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, Warwick Business School and Lancaster University Management School all in the top-10.

S P Jain School of Global Management in Australia, and Canada’s HEC Montréal are the only non-European schools ranked in the Forbes list.

S P Jain reported the highest job acceptance rate of all schools in the ranking. Three months after graduation, 97% of its class were employed. Alumni saw a median $51,800 gain on their investment five years after the MBA.

Forbes surveyed 17,400 alumni at 95 schools regarding their pre- and post-MBA compensation, career choices, and location.

The rankings measure total compensation, including salary, bonuses and exercised stock options. The “five-year MBA gain” represents the net cumulative amount the typical alumnus would have earned after five years by getting their MBA over staying in their pre-MBA career.

The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

    Details about MBA Courses

What is an MBA? Types of MBA courses? How much does it cost?

here are many confusing questions that the ever-popular 3-letter acronym (M.B.A.) generates every year, as new higher education aspirants (enamoured by the exciting opportunities that the qualification seems to promise), hit the internet for answers.

What s an MBA? , How many years to complete an MBA? What is the average course duration? , What subjects does the course list cover? , What is the typical MBA course fee? and of course, Is it right for me?

It s best that we start with the basics, right? If some of this sounds too trivial, feel free to jump to the section that you find the most relevant. We ve covered all the details about the MBA on this site, from the very simple to the highly advanced MBA topics.

After you ve completed reading up on the basic information about the MBA course on this page, don t miss the article at the bottom that explains how you can get into the best MBA colleges in the world (USA, UK, Canada, and India).

While most of the information on this page (e.g. course list, types) is relevant for any MBA in India and abroad, the final article focuses on international GMAT MBA degrees. If you are seriously considering international business schools, don t forget to read Beyond The MBA Hype.

    What is an MBA?

By definition, an MBA (here s the full form of MBA ) is an internationally accepted masters (post-graduate) level degree that

    • imparts a strong theoretical foundation in business concepts
    • provides practical opportunities (via internships, group assignments and individual projects) to test what students learn in the class
    • builds hard-skills in the areas of management and leadership
    • polishes a range of soft-skills like communication, motivation and negotiation
    • opens up global opportunities for career growth
    • allows MBA students to start an independent business after graduating

Whether you are looking at MBA courses in India or abroad, the choices can make the process overwhelming. Starting from the type of the program to shortlisting the best MBA courses, it takes lot of effort.

However, if you can structure your process and knock out the options that don t fit your needs, life can become a little easy.

    Types of MBA courses

MBA courses can come in a wider variety of formats. The most common types of MBA courses are as follows: Full-time MBA, Executive MBA, Part time MBA, Correspondence Course, Distance MBA Courses, Online MBA courses Phew! Quite a mind-boggling choice.

Each one has its pros and cons. Though there is no single best format, the full-time MBA format can get you the biggest bang for your buck.

The average duration of full-time MBA programs can range between 1 to 2 years. You ll find programs like INSEAD that are shorter than 1 year. The duration of part-time programs can extend up to 3 years, since students are working and studying at the same time.

Read this post to understand the different types of MBA courses .

There are no clear answers to which one would be best for everyone. Here s a candidate who explains how he tackled the online eMBA course vs full-time MBA dilemma.

    MBA course fees

While the MBA fees of many low ranking programs (that often struggle to get students enrolled) might be very low, the fees can really shoot up for the elite management programs.

And it s not just the course fees that you need to consider. There are other costs too like the visa fees, books, laptop, flight costs, study trip expenses and the biggest (hidden) one that most MBA students overlook the opportunity cost.

Not sure whether you should go for a traditional MBA (e.g. PGP from IIM) in India or a foreign MBA? Read the views of an Indian student who attended the best MBA courses in India and abroad: IIM MBA in India vs MBA abroad: Which is better?

Our view is that it doesn t make much practical sense to go for a business degree when you haven t spent enough time in a real job understanding how the corporate world works.

Since good MBA courses are expensive, many students fund their MBA courses using education loans. However, a few smart students who manage the application strategy well get a significant amount of financial aid. Read how these students got partial and full MBA scholarships from really good MBA universities.

    MBA course details

In the initial period, the course syllabus covers the following core subjects:

Accounting, Economics, Corporate finance, Strategy/Frameworks, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Leadership, Marketing, Information Technology

Once the basic foundation has been laid, you ll have the option of specialising in any area that you want. This can be done by choosing several electives.

Get up to speed by learning some important concepts covered in the MBA program. Read this article on MBA syllabus. It has a wealth of knowledge and free lessons covering the most basic and common subjects taught in the top MBA schools in USA, UK, Canada. You ll also get an idea of whether you really enjoy this field or it s only the glamour of money that s attracting you to an MBA.

Teaching techniques and methodology for MBA students

Apart from the regular lecture based teaching that most students are already familiar with, MBA pedagogies also employ new methodologies to ensure that the learning is maximised. Two popular techniques are the Case study method and Group assignments.

    Case study method

For learning business and becoming a successful manager, theory itself is not sufficient. Different business situations need to be simulated and presented to the students so that they workaround and find the best possible practical solution for a given set of circumstances.

The case studies may contain useful data as well as data which may not be of much use. So the students learn to collect all the relevant information, organise it, analyse it from the perspective of the person in the case study and then arrive at a decision.

Here it is not just the final answer which is important but also the thinking, deriving and learning process which is emphasised upon so that the students get trained to deal with various real-life corporate-situations.

    Group work

Group work is another way in which students can enrich their learning experience. Groups should preferably be formed among students with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Each group would ideally comprise of 4-5 students.

The interaction among the group members gives them a chance to understand other’s point of view and way of thinking. Each member should make it a point to actively be involved in the discussions and while presenting the final outcome.

The success of the group work depends on the full-fledged co-operation and participation of each team member. The essence of teamwork is thus stressed upon through this exercise.

    Best MBA courses list

There are several MBA rankings that you can refer to in order to decide which MBA course works best for you. Some prominent ones are Financial Times, Businessweek and US News. Each publication has its own way to filter and rank the top MBA colleges abroad. You ll find the details here: Best MBA rankings

We ve created our own full-time MBA course list based on online popularity. Check it out here business school rankings

Once you ve decided on the type / duration / location of the MBA course, you ll have to prepare a strategy to tackle the MBA application.

    Market Segmentation #mba #crash #course

    #

The division of a market into different homogeneous groups of consumers is known as market segmentation .

Rather than offer the same marketing mix to vastly different customers, market segmentation makes it possible for firms to tailor the marketing mix for specific target markets, thus better satisfying customer needs. Not all elements of the marketing mix are necessarily changed from one segment to the next. For example, in some cases only the promotional campaigns would differ.

    A market segment should be:

    • measurable
    • accessible by communication and distribution channels
    • different in its response to a marketing mix
    • durable (not changing too quickly)
    • substantial enough to be profitable

A market can be segmented by various bases, and industrial markets are segmented somewhat differently from consumer markets, as described below.

    Consumer Market Segmentation

A basis for segmentation is a factor that varies among groups within a market, but that is consistent within groups. One can identify four primary bases on which to segment a consumer market:

Geographic segmentation is based on regional variables such as region, climate, population density, and population growth rate.

Demographic segmentation is based on variables such as age, gender, ethnicity, education, occupation, income, and family status.

Psychographic segmentation is based on variables such as values, attitudes, and lifestyle.

Behavioral segmentation is based on variables such as usage rate and patterns, price sensitivity, brand loyalty, and benefits sought.

The optimal bases on which to segment the market depend on the particular situation and are determined by marketing research. market trends, and managerial judgment.

    Business Market Segmentation

While many of the consumer market segmentation bases can be applied to businesses and organizations, the different nature of business markets often leads to segmentation on the following bases:

Geographic segmentation – based on regional variables such as customer concentration, regional industrial growth rate, and international macroeconomic factors.

Customer type – based on factors such as the size of the organization, its industry, position in the value chain, etc.

Buyer behavior – based on factors such as loyalty to suppliers, usage patterns, and order size.

    Profiling the Segments

The identified market segments are summarized by profiles, often given a descriptive name. From these profiles, the attractiveness of each segment can be evaluated and a target market segment selected.

Job Description of an Information Systems Security Officer

Source: *U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Job Description for an Information Systems Security Officer

Information systems security officers (ISSO) research, develop, implement, test and review an organization’s information security in order to protect information and prevent unauthorized access. Officers inform users about security measures, explain potential threats, install software, implement security measures and monitor networks. As cyber attacks have increased, so too has the demand for security officers in the Department of Defense, Department of Energy and Department of Homeland Security, among other government agencies and large corporations.

According to Monster.com job postings in November 2010, ISSOs are generally responsible for gathering information necessary to maintain security and establish functioning external barriers such as firewalls and other security measures. They define, create and maintain the documentation for certification and accreditation of each information system in accordance with government requirements. They also assess the impacts on system modifications and technological advances. Additionally, ISSOs review systems in order to identify potential security weaknesses, recommend improvements to amend vulnerabilities, implement changes and document upgrades.

    • Networking Management

    • Webmaster and Multimedia Management

    Required Skills and Experience

Employers may require at minimum a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or five years of comparable work experience. Monster.com listings note as of November 2010 that some employers may desire up to eight or more years of ISSO experience as well security clearance status of Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) with a full polygraph test. In addition, many employers prefer candidates who are Certified Information Systems Security Professionals (CISSP) according to the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium.

Candidates must be highly analytical and effectively able to troubleshoot and prioritize needs, requirements and other issues. Aside from technical skills, prospective candidates should have excellent communications, teamwork, leadership and conflict management skills. Because of the constant developing nature of information systems and cyber attacks, officers must be committed to continuous learning and system development.

    Career Outlook

The expansion of information and computer technology has created a growth rate for technology-associated jobs. As more databases are connected to the Internet, and as data security becomes increasingly important, a growing number of these workers are needed to protect databases from attack.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that employment of information security analysts – a category that includes information security officers – is estimated to increase by 18% between 2014 and 2024, which is faster than average. According to BLS data from May 2015, the median annual salary for an information security officer at that time was $90,120. ISSOs can advance to such positions as director of security or chief technology officer.

As employment of information security systems security officers is growing at a much faster rate than average, job opportunities should be favorable over the next decade. Having relevant skills and experience, such as ISSO experience and CISSP, will ensure that job-seekers’ resumes appeal to employers.

    What is a thesis defense? #mba #gatech

    #

    What is a thesis defense?

    What is a thesis defense?

A thesis defense has two parts: a thesis and a defense. The second mistake many students make is not knowing what their thesis is. The third mistake is not knowing how to defend it. (The first mistake is describe later.)

    What is a thesis?

Your thesis is not your dissertation. Neither is it a one liner about what you are doing. Your thesis is a position or proposition that a person (as a candidate for scholastic honors) advances and offers to maintain by argument. [Webster’s 7th New Collegiate Dictionary]. I looked at how people play chess is not a thesis; people adapt memories of old games to play new games is. Similarly, I wrote a program to play chess is not a thesis; playing chess requires a database of actual games is. A thesis has to claim something.

There are many kinds of theses, especially in computer science, but most of them can be lumped into one of the following classes:

    1. process X is a feasible way to do task Y
    2. process X is a better way to do task Y than any previously known method
    3. task Y requires process X
    4. people use process X to do task Y
    5. process X is a terrible way to do Y
    6. people don’t use process X

Feel free to substitute process X with memory organization X or what ever else might make one theory different from another. Make sure you clearly specify the class of tasks Y to which your thesis applies.

Besides being a proposition, a thesis has to have another property: it must say something new. Understanding natural language requires context is not a thesis (except maybe in a linguistics department); process X is a feasible mechanism for adding context sensitivity to natural language understanders is, as is context is not required for visual understanding.

    What is a defense?

A defense presents evidence for a thesis. What kind of evidence is apprpropriate depends on what kind of thesis is being defended.

Thesis: process X is a feasible way to do task Y

One defense for this kind of claim is an analysis of the complexity, or completeness, or whatever, of the theoretical algorithm. In computer science, the more common defense is based on empirical results from running an experiment. A good defense here means more than one example, and answers to questions such as the following. What are the capabilities and limits of your experiment? How often do the things that your experiment does come up in the real world? What’s involved in extending it? If it’s easy to extend, why haven’t you? If your example is a piece of a larger system, how realistic are your assumptions about input and output?

Thesis: process X is a better way to do task Y than any previously known method

The same kind of defense applies here as in the previous case, but now serious comparisons with previous systems are required. Can your result do the same examples the previous results did, or can you make them do yours? Can you prove they couldn’t do your examples? If you claim to be more efficient, what are you measuring?

Thesis: task Y requires process X

This is usually defended by a logical argument. It is usually very tough to do, even if the argument doesn’t have to be formalized.

Thesis: people use process X to do task Y

Many students make the mistake of picking this kind of thesis to defend. It requires serious experimental evidence to defend, unless your real thesis is of the previous form, i.e. only process X is possible. Selected excerpts from protocols and surveys of your officemates are not psychological evidence, no matter how much they might have inspired your work.

Thesis: process X is a terrible way to do Y, or people don’t use process X

This is a reasonable thesis if process X is a serious contender. The defense would be an analysis of the limits of process X, i.e. things it can’t do, or things it does wrong, along with evidence that those things matter.

I have lots of theses in my dissertation. Which one should I pick for my defense?

Defending a real thesis is hard. If you think you have a lot of theses, you probably just have a bunch of undefended claims. One good thesis, or two so-so theses, with adequate description and defense, is more than enough to fill up a dissertation.

I have the opposite problem. I don’t think I have any thesis by these standards.

Highly unlikely. If you’re bright, educated, and have worked hard on a topic for more than a year, you must have learned something no one else knew before. The first mistake that students make is to think that a thesis has to be grander than the theory of relativity. A thesis should be new and interesting, but it doesn’t have to change the foundations of all we believe and hold dear.

Don’t try to come up with a thesis first, and then investigate it. Start by exploring some task domain. Take some initial ideas and push them hard for a year or so. Now, stop and think about what you’ve done and what you’ve learned. Among your accomplishments and experience, there will be several good candidate theses. Pick one. Test it out on your advisor and other faculty members. Test it out on other students. Is it a claim that you can describe clearly and briefly? Is it a claim that anyone cares about? Is it a claim that people don’t find perfectly obvious, or if they do find it obvious, can you convince them that it could easily be false.

Once you’ve refined your claim into a good thesis, now you can determine what kind of defense is appropriate for it and what more you need to do. This is where the hard part comes, psychologically, because to create a defense for your thesis, you’re going to have to attack it harder than anyone else. What happens if the thesis fails? Negate it and defend that! In a year or so of focused research, you should be ready for a real thesis defense.

See how easy it is, once you know how?

Few of us would go to our auto mechanic for medical advice; we typically seek out experts with experience related to the problem we are trying to solve. Yet on average only 25% of Standard Poor (S P) 500 companies have independent directors with related industry experience, according to data collected by CEIBS Professor of Finance Wang Cong for the period of 2000 to 2007. How effective can an independent board director be at monitoring and advising top management of a firm without having worked in the same industry?

Manufacturing firms know they must be flexible, creative and innovative if they want to survive in today’s fiercely competitive market. But can they do this while hitting productivity targets, which are also a key component of operations? How the dynamic between innovation and quality management, which are often at cross-purposes, influences new product innovation is the focus of a new study co-authored by Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management Zhao Xiande. The study also explores how two organizational characteristics, centralization of authority and integration between functions, affect manufacturing innovation.

Just an hour away from Shanghai by fast train is Hangzhou. Arguably the most entrepreneurial city in China, it is home to Alibaba, one of the most globally visible Chinese companies. The capital city of Zhejiang province boasts a vibrant start-up ecosystem of lesser known young companies, whose founders hope to emulate the success of Jack Ma, Alibaba’s founder.

The toxic work culture at the ride-hailing company Uber was among the reasons why a group of investors recently forced out its CEO Travis Kalanick. Company culture typically comes from the top; employees take their cues from company leaders about what behaviours are acceptable in the workplace. The issues at Uber, which received extensive media coverage, included battles between the company and its drivers over some of its compensation practices, and an investigation into around 200 bullying and sexual harassment allegations.

Globalization and multiculturalism have resulted in increased collaboration and exchange between different countries and cultures. We see examples of this in chains such as McDonalds opening more restaurants in China and India with localized menus, and companies like Unilever and P G launching products tailored to the needs of emerging market customers. It is no surprise, therefore, that multinational organizations view cultural intelligence (CQ), the ability to adapt and function in foreign settings, as a valuable asset in the workplace.

July 11, 2017. Paris – Former Prime Minister of France Jean-Pierre Raffarin today highlighted the similarities between China and France on issues such as globalisation and the need for collaboration at the international level. “If I am to say one thing – among many – on which both France and China have always had consensus, I would say it’s the multilateralism, the international cooperation, and a multipolar vision of the world,” he said. He was speaking to a gathering of French and Chinese business executives at CEIBS 3rd Europe Forum, held in Paris. The event focused on Sino-Franco investments, how France can benefit from China’s economic growth and how Chinese companies can leverage French investors’ resources to better compete both domestically and internationally.

July 6, 2017. London – Advisor to China’s ambitious Belt Road Initiative (BRI) Professor Yang Jiemian says China and the UK have a lot to gain by working together on the BRI, especially if they tie in existing projects from their two countries and other parts of the world while leveraging the mutual benefits and complementary strengths of both countries. “The BRI could garner the best possible outcome only by [aligning] with each other’s plans such as the British Northern Powerhouse, Germany’s Industry 4.0 strategic initiative, [along with major road projects in places such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, etc.],” he said today at a CEIBS-hosted forum looking at China’s outbound investments and opportunities for Britain.

2014 Ranking of the Top MBA Programs & Best Business Schools

See the full list of 129 Business Schools

Why did we develop an MBA ranking?

There are currently more than eight major MBA rankings available to prospective students, not counting rankings for military MBA programs or rankings of schools by country. While these tools can help individuals better understand factors such as post-graduate salary and projected employment outcomes, they do not provide insight into other important aspects of business school, such as student-to-professor ratios or specialty programs, like human resources management or entrepreneurship.

We have written before about how program rankings can be manipulated, faulty or decided with little or no information on the part of ranking officials. Many a b-school has criticized the rankings process, calling it a beauty contest, a self-fulfilling prophecy, and a serious time and resource drain for participating schools. In general, such rankings should not be the sole deciding factor in choosing an MBA program or even used as a tool of school selection. Factors such as class flexibility, tuition, alumni base, and program offerings should matter more to prospective students than an institution’s ranking.

To help make sense of these rankings, and balance them with other aspects of what business schools have to offer, we interviewed MBA professors, deans and admissions directors for their opinions on what value MBA rankings can have, and the additional factors MBA applicants should consider when applying. In addition, we combined the most popular MBA program rankings to give as close to a comprehensive ranking as possible.

Social Entrepreneurship: The Best Schools Programs

In his 80th year of life, the famous English sculptor Henry Moore was asked a fascinating question by literary critic Donald Hall.

Now that you are 80, you must know the secret of life. What is it?

Moore paused ever so slightly, with just enough time to smile before answering.

The secret of life, he mused, is to have a task, something you do your entire life, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for your whole life. And the most important thing is: It must be something you cannot possibly do.

The sculptor s remarks represent a nicely packaged theory of a productive life: Throw yourself into something big that you believe in. Obsessively dedicate your life s work to it. And make damn sure it s ambitious enough to stretch you to the limits.

It s a philosophy that has become the motivation for an increasingly larger pool of MBAs that is helping to fuel a boom in social entrepreneurship. As greater numbers of young people dedicate themselves to social enterprise, more and more business schools are also getting into the act. Northwestern s Kellogg School of Management now dangles $80,000 in seed money to a graduating student who launches a non-profit straight out of school that can compete for the prize. Berkeley s Haas School has partnered with McKinsey Co. so that McKinsey consultants act as coaches to student teams who do pro-bono work for local non-profits. Harvard Business School now says that it has about 90 faculty members more than most schools have faculty engaged in social enterprise research, teaching and programs. Since 1993, more than 500 books and case studies have been published by Harvard professors on social enterprise. Interest in social entrepreneurship has exploded in recent years, says Kim Corfman, vice dean for MBA Programs at New York University s Stern School of Business. We are seeing it in applications, in memberships in these clubs, and in volunteer service.

Inspired by what Muhammad Yunus Grameen Bank has achieved in micro-finance and the remarkable results of Wendy Kopp s Teach for America in education, many young people today see the MBA as a springboard into the social sector.

What can a would-be social entrepreneur learn in a business school largely designed for the for-profit world? Greg Dees, co-founder of Duke University s Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship, puts it this way: We re not teaching them to have the personal characteristics required to be a successful social entrepreneur any more than a music teacher teaches the personal characteristics to be a gifted musician, he said in a recent interview. However, good teachers do more than teach. They also coax, encourage, inspire, reward, and model the kinds of characteristics associated with success. Though we don t teach courage, for instance, we can inspire potential social entrepreneurs to act with courage by exposing them to people like themselves who have started social ventures. A teacher can draw out the potential of a student to be a social entrepreneur and most human beings have that potential if they want to exercise it.

Truth is, the MBA degree has become increasingly versatile and is held by many well-known social entrepreneurs. A large number of high-profile social enterprises are led and championed by MBAs, from Habitat for Humanity International, Acumen Fund, and Alzheimer’s Association to the Center for Applied Philanthropy, Children’s Cancer Research Fund, and World Vision.

Which schools have the best programs to train social capitalists? For years, Yale University’s School of Management and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business had been the two big pioneers in this field. Stanford’s launched its now well-known Public Management Program in 1971. From its start in 1976, Yale’s Management School defined its mission differently from any other business school: to educate not only business leaders but also leaders for society.

Since that time, however, many other business schools have gotten into the social enterprise game, with full-fledged programs, concentrations, social venture plan competitions, and global experiences. The Skoll Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford s Said Business School is a solid example of a relatively new program that is attracting the best and brightest to the social sector. It was founded in 2003 with a generous grant the largest funding ever received by a business school for an international social entrepreneurship program from Stanford MBA Jeff Skoll, the founding president of eBay. Each year, the center hands out fully-funded MBA scholarships to five highly impressive candidates who are named Skoll Skollars. In just seven years, the program has established itself as one of the best in the world.

U.S. News World Report annually surveys business school deans and MBA directors and asks them to identify U.S. schools with standout specialty programs. We’ve taken that ranking in non-profit management, which lists only 11 schools, as a starting point for a deep dive into exactly what each of best is offering social entrepreneurs.
